00:00I actually did try, I tried vegan.
00:02I just wanted to see how I felt.
00:04I had some friends that had tried it
00:05and they felt really good.
00:06And I tried it and I did not.
00:08So it's just, it would have been a hard adjustment for me.
00:13Hello, my name is Luke Grimes.
00:15And today I'm gonna show you what my diet looks like
00:17and explain to you how it informs my training.
00:22I try to just keep it high protein, lower on the carb side.
00:26A lot of eggs, a lot of beef, chicken, fish,
00:29stuff like that.
00:30I do love potatoes.
00:31That's my sort of guilty pleasure.
00:36I realized I don't really like to eat breakfast.
00:37I feel better when I don't.
00:39When I wake up and eat immediately, I feel really tired.
00:42So I'll have my first meal around noon.
00:44I'll have like three or four eggs,
00:46some sort of potato, hash brown, some sort of vegetable.
00:49I try to do those three things on my plate
00:52for any given meal.
00:53Just a protein, a vegetable and usually a potato option.
01:00Playing music and being out touring a little bit,
01:04or if I'm traveling for press or whatever
01:06I happen to be doing.
01:07Airports are rough, everybody knows that.
01:09It's hard to eat good in an airport.
01:10So it's easy when I'm at home in Montana,
01:13hard to get tempted because there are barely
01:15any restaurants.
01:16So we have to cook everything at home.
01:18But yeah, on the road, it's a little tougher.
01:19And I just try to plan ahead.
01:21If I know I'm gonna be in an airport all day,
01:23just kind of bring some stuff with me.
01:25I make really good chili with the venison
01:27that I harvest myself.
01:29And it's really, really good.
01:33I'm not hungry at all in the mornings,
01:34but at night I like to rage a little bit.
01:38I get a little snacky,
01:38but I try to have healthy snacks around.
01:40I think the best thing that's ever happened
01:42for my diet was meeting my wife
01:44because she eats very healthy.
01:46She's someone who likes everything organic
01:48and no processed food.
01:51So that's been nice to have her influence in my life.
01:54I've definitely eaten a lot better since I've met her.
01:59I like to work out first thing.
02:01So I'll wake up, first thing is coffee.
02:03I've heard you're supposed to wait a little bit.
02:05And I have yet to try that
02:07because I crave coffee the moment I wake up.
02:09So that is first.
02:11I have a little gym set up in my house
02:13that makes it really easy to finish the coffee,
02:15go down to the basement, work out.
02:16And then, you know, that's it for the day.
02:18I always feel a lot better,
02:20a lot more healthy when I'm lifting.
02:22Probably like three times a week,
02:24I'll lift and then have an airdyne, like an assault bike.
02:26So I'll do sprints on that, which absolutely suck,
02:28but I can do that in 10 minutes
02:30versus, you know, running for 40 minutes.
02:32I don't have the patience, I hate running.
02:35I like to hike a lot too.
02:36So that's a really good, like,
02:37steady state cardio thing that I can do.
02:39And, you know, going on a hike
02:41doesn't feel like I'm working out.
02:42It feels like I'm doing something I enjoy.
02:45You know, if I'm on the road,
02:46it's kind of a crap shoot when I'm able to do it,
02:48but I try to do it.
02:49I'm not quite to that level yet
02:51where I have like a gym bus that follows me around.
02:53I mean, you know, Lord willing, I can get there.
02:55That'd be, that'd be nice.
02:57But no, usually it's like a,
02:59you gotta make do with whatever, you know,
03:01if I'm got a hotel gym or I'll pay for, you know,
03:05like a one day pass if I'm in some city
03:07and I have three hours off, you know,
03:08I'll just go into the gym,
03:10give them 15 bucks and try to get a workout in.
03:12Pushups, you can do anywhere.
03:14The sort of dips on the chair,
03:15there's a lot of that going on.
03:17And yeah, nothing, nothing too crazy.
03:19You know, I'm not going to go that far out of my way
03:21to do a bunch of goofy stuff to get a workout in.
03:23I'll find a gym.
03:27I actually do take fish oil.
03:30I've heard that's good for me.
03:31So I take that and a multivitamin.
03:34I'd rather have the calories be in a meal
03:36than a protein shake.
03:37So I try to just eat all my calories.
03:42I haven't had to do any like huge physical transformations
03:45for any roles.
03:47For example, for Casey in Yellowstone,
03:49he was a Navy SEAL.
03:51I didn't picture him to be kind of like a guy
03:53that looked like a pushover.
03:55So I tried to put on a little muscle for that, you know,
03:56but he's also a cowboy.
03:57So he's burning a lot of calories, that guy, you know,
04:00and if you meet real life cowboys,
04:01they tend to be really lean.
04:03And that was even in the notes for the characters.
04:06It was very lean.
04:07So I tried to put on a little muscle,
04:09but be lean at the same time.
04:11When I started Yellowstone,
04:12it was probably the healthiest
04:13and best shape I've ever been in.
04:16I had a personal trainer
04:17and I would see him four or five times a week.
04:19He was a strength and conditioning coach for MMA fighters.
04:23So that's how I got into the assault bike,
04:25doing a lot of boxing and Muay Thai type exercises,
04:27not to fight professionally,
04:29but just for the training, for the cardio
04:32and lifting a lot of weights.
04:33That guy really knew his stuff.
04:35His name's Jesse Forbes.
04:36He's awesome.
04:37He's a buddy of mine.
04:39Yeah, chicken or the egg?
04:42So the show came first.
04:43I didn't really ride horses.
04:45I guess like most people that grew up in America,
04:47you've been on a horse, you've done a trail ride,
04:50just that kind of really simple stuff.
04:52But for Yellowstone,
04:53it was some really intensive training.
04:56Definitely better than I was.
04:58That first year, I was kind of freaked out by it.
05:01Something intimidating about being on something that big
05:03that has a mind of its own.
05:04It knows when you're not experienced
05:06and then you're sitting on its back.
05:08It's very intimidating.
05:10It's also hard to act off the back of a horse
05:13because they're very sensitive.
05:15They really can sense your emotions.
05:17And so when you're really upset, they're kind of upset.
05:20And so that made it kind of tough
05:21to play any of the kind of bigger emotional scenes.
05:24I think the only way to kind of prepare your body
05:27for riding a horse is just to ride a horse a lot.
05:29But what happens is you get saddle sores.
05:33That's a real thing.
05:35I had to get ointment.
05:36It was a whole mess.
05:40You gotta work up some calluses on your backside
05:42a little bit from sitting
05:43in that really hard leather saddle all day.
05:46And yeah, there's a lot of leg muscles that go into that
05:48when they're trotting and you're posting.
05:50You know, it's just little muscles
05:51that you just have never used before in that way.
05:54But a couple weeks in, your body gets acclimated.
05:57You're all good.
05:58But if you've taken a while off,
06:01you'll see you get a little sore.
06:04That's funny.
06:05I actually did try.
06:07I tried vegan.
06:08I just wanted to see how I felt.
06:09I had some friends that had tried it
06:10and they felt really good.
06:11I tried it and I did not.
06:13I felt very low energy.
06:16I don't know if I stuck with it long enough,
06:19but I grew up eating red meat a lot.
06:22I grew up in Ohio.
06:23You know, steaks were the ideal meal.
06:25Steak, a potato, you know, a salad.
06:27So it's just, it would have been a hard adjustment for me.
06:32I've always liked the same stuff and that's it.
06:34Like a steak and a potato and a salad with ranch dressing
06:37is, I could do it all day, every day.
06:42The diet for me is much, much harder.
06:46It takes a lot more discipline.
06:46I like working out.
06:48I like lifting weights.
06:50Feel really good when I do it.
06:51I do not feel particularly good when I eat super healthy.
06:55So I have to make myself do that.
06:59It's hard, you know.
07:01I don't know if I've completely figured it out yet.
07:04So work in progress.
07:08Chips and salsa, beer, tequila.
07:12And when we do have lunch,
07:14we just ask for, you know, exactly what I've been saying.
07:16Some sort of meat, vegetable, potato thing
07:21that's, you know, not too unhealthy.
07:23Best road snack.
07:25I think, you know,
07:26I always try to find good tacos wherever I'm at.
07:28If you like tacos, it's always fun to try out
07:30different places in different cities.
07:33Favorite carb is potatoes.
07:34Anyway, love them.
07:37Elk burger, leaner, it's tastier.
07:41The local Montana food is steak,
07:43so it worked really well for me.
07:46Oh, another Montana food, huckleberries.
07:48I never had huckleberries before and they grow up there.
07:50And so a certain time of year, everything's huckleberry.
07:53They'll put huckleberries in your coffee, ice cream.
07:55They're amazing if you've ever had one
07:57and I'd never had one.
07:58So yeah, try those out.
08:01I love macaroni and cheese.
08:03I love macaroni and cheese.
08:05I just like the straight up craft macaroni and cheese.
08:09Like the dirty, cheap boxed macaroni and cheese.
08:14I don't get to eat it that often because again,
08:17the scales don't tend to like it, but it's really good.
08:20I love pizza too.
08:22I mean, who doesn't, right?
08:23So yeah, about once a week, maybe once every two weeks,
08:28my wife and I will order pizza.
08:29I like pepperoni and banana peppers.
08:34Chili, my homemade chili.
08:38My mom makes really, really good mashed potatoes.
08:41Like world-class mashed potatoes.
08:43Yeah, when she would do like Thanksgiving dinner,
08:45you know, she makes homemade mashed potatoes
08:47that are incredible.
08:49Not the boxed kind.
08:51Last meal I cooked.
08:53So my wife's Brazilian and we want to do this like
08:55healthy version of a Brazilian type meal.
08:58She makes vinaigrette, which is like,
09:00I just said it's so American.
09:01It sounds cooler when she says it,
09:03which is sort of like a Brazilian version
09:06of like a pico de gallo type salsa.
09:08And we do that with some ground beef and avocado
09:10and rice and butter.
09:12We make that a lot at home just cause it's easy
09:13and it's healthy, high protein.
09:17So yeah, we make that a couple times a week.
09:20I think you know the answer to this.
09:23Gator makes some of the greatest steaks
09:26I've ever eaten in my life.
09:27I don't know what he does.
09:29I don't know.
09:30It doesn't look like he does much.
09:31He just knows how to cook a steak perfectly.
09:36Ranch dressing maybe.
09:39Oh, okay.
09:42I wouldn't pick Casey.
09:43I know Casey.
09:44I spend a lot of time with Casey, so I'm good.
09:47Yeah, maybe Lee.
09:50The brother who passed away in the first episode ever.
09:55Played by Dave Annabelle, who's a great guy
09:57and we all miss having him around.
09:59So it'd be nice to sit down with Lee.
10:02Like my death Romeo.
10:06Yeah, it would be a New York strip, medium rare,
10:11baked potato with butter and sour cream
10:14and like a bad romaine salad with ranch dressing.
10:20Get best food smell, really good one.
10:23Man.
10:27Does steak smell?
10:28I don't think it does.
10:30Get best food smell.
10:31You know what smells really good?
10:32When you're like walking by a barbecue place
10:35and you can smell them like making the barbecue outside.
10:38That's a really good smell.
10:43Yeah.
10:44Oh yeah.
10:46Sometimes, you know, we'll get a little late night,
10:49you know, nothing better than to get a little food in bed.
10:52Try not to get crumbs, but you know, sometimes mess up.
10:56All right guys, thanks for watching.
10:58Thanks for listening.
11:00I know you didn't ask about what I eat, but I told you
11:02and let's all, you know, we're doing our best guys.
11:06All right, I'm gonna go have a steak now.
