00:28Alright, I was so stoked when I heard that Men's Health wanted to do a feature on me
00:34and it's on gym and fridge and I thought, well, the gym part, I do train a lot.
00:39The fridge part, you know, it's a little tougher.
00:41This is a real fridge.
00:42As you can see from the artwork, this is very much a family fridge.
00:45Let's see what we got here.
00:47What staples do you always have in your fridge?
00:49So you know, we've got young kids at home.
00:50It's not just all, you know, kale in here, right?
00:53Kids gotta have real stuff.
00:55A lot of veggies and a lot of fruits.
00:57I think that's important, especially when you have kids around the house.
01:01What are some of your staples?
01:02I don't see the beer.
01:04Honestly, I try to eat balanced.
01:06I try to eat fruits and vegetables and all that stuff, but like, I have regular whole
01:10milk.
01:11I have regular butter.
01:12The way the training regimen works for me is like, I'm trying to burn a lot of calories
01:16and get a great workout in, so I don't worry so much about fat free and that sort of thing.
01:23What's your morning routine?
01:24I'm a coffee guy.
01:25I go for coffee first thing in the morning.
01:26You know, I don't generally eat a lot until maybe late morning, something like that.
01:31And you know, I've heard people say, well, that just goes into your intermittent fasting,
01:35right?
01:36If you're going 16 hours with three meals.
01:37So you know, I've heard some people say it's good.
01:39Some people say, oh, you got to get up and have four eggs first thing in the morning.
01:41I don't really know what the right answer is, but I know that this works for me.
01:45So that's kind of what I do.
01:46I'm pretty light until after my coffee and after my workout.
01:50And you might've noticed the chirping in the background.
01:52That's my birds.
01:53Oh, now it's my cuckoo clock.
01:57There's always something.
01:59How do you like your coffee?
02:00Coffee is something that can kill you with calories if you're not careful, right?
02:03You know, people like the sweeteners in their coffee and stuff.
02:05Lately, I've been pursuing a latte.
02:06I do that with oat milk, which we have right here.
02:10Real stuff here.
02:11And I just got a little espresso machine and that fixes me right up.
02:14What do you always have in your fridge?
02:15Well, that's an easy one.
02:17Something I always have in my fridge is my hot sauce because it's a Gringo Bandito.
02:20This is a hot sauce brand that I made up with the help of my friend.
02:24I like spicy food as much as the next guy.
02:26I really want it to taste good and not just be hot.
02:29So you should definitely check it out and not just because I'm telling you, because
02:32it's true.
02:33What was your favorite snack while studying for your PhD?
02:36You know, when I was working on my PhD, I had to spend a lot of time in front of a computer
02:41or in a lab somewhere.
02:42And so you're looking for a quick, easy snack.
02:43I mean, I used to do power bars.
02:45I don't even know if those are around anymore, but just some sort of meal replacement bar.
02:49You're satisfied, right?
02:50But you're not totally blown up by eating a bag of chips.
02:54What does your diet consist of now?
02:55You know, I've worked with trainers who said, go ahead and have your coffee in the morning.
02:59Try to stick to a salad at lunch and take it easy on the carbs at dinner.
03:02I think that's a really sensible plan, actually.
03:04What did they say?
03:05Eat like a king at breakfast and a prince at lunch and a pauper for dinner, right?
03:08I think there's something to be said for that.
03:11What do you eat before a show?
03:12I think the thing about playing a show is it is totally like a workout.
03:15Right.
03:16My heart rate gets way up.
03:17I'm burning tons of calories.
03:18If I ate a real dinner or whatever before a show, it would be like having that meal
03:22and trying to go out on a six-mile run or whatever.
03:24I would puke.
03:25I think the idea is to keep it really light before the shows.
03:28Very frequently do just a plain grilled chicken breast, some plain rice, and some steamed
03:33vegetables with gringo bandito, of course.
03:37How does your diet change when you're on the road?
03:39Eating on the road, it is tougher because you're not as in control of what your options
03:44are eating.
03:45You're kind of at the mercy of what's around and what's out there.
03:49As we all know, when that happens, you're like, oh, okay, I'm going to have this instead.
03:53We've been able to get better and better food.
03:56As an example, a couple of guys in my band are vegans.
03:58There's a ton of great vegan options now, which just didn't exist 10 years ago.
04:03What's the toughest diet you've ever tried?
04:05Toughest diet?
04:06There's been a couple.
04:09The master cleanse.
04:10Anyone done the master cleanse?
04:11Man, that one's a bitch.
04:12It's water with a squeezed lemon, and some syrup, and a little cayenne pepper in it.
04:17That's all you drink for 10 days.
04:19Then in the morning, they want you to do a salt flush, which is where you put a tablespoon
04:22of salt, and then everything comes out.
04:25Call it a cleanse because you're not just losing weight, but the cleanse is that you're
04:28cleaning out your plumbing, so to speak.
04:30I don't think I've ever actually made it 10 days.
04:31I made it maybe seven, and someone said, how do you feel?
04:34I go, I feel somewhere in between calm and buzzed.
04:39It really does change your mental state, and it's an interesting feeling.
04:42I guess I'd recommend trying it, but it's a tough one to complete.
04:46What's your go-to cheat meal?
04:47Well, my good friend and trainer, Magnus, he once said, it is not a cheat day.
04:52It is a treat day.
04:53He said that you shouldn't say cheat because that reinforces a different kind of behavior,
04:57which should be a treat.
04:58That hasn't been said.
04:59I love Mexican food.

05:14Welcome to my gym.
05:15This is my gym in my house.
05:17Now, this has all the stuff in it.
05:18I've got my running stuff and my swimming stuff.
05:20And this is where it hurts in the morning, and so they call this your pain cave.
05:24This is my pain cave.
05:26How has your training changed over the years?
05:28I was a runner for a long time.
05:30That's what I would really probably rather do than just about anything else.
05:33But as we all get older, things start hurting more, and my knees really gave me a problem
05:37after a while.
05:39So I backed off the running for a long time, and I kind of switched to strength training.
05:44And I liked that OK, but I really was missing the cardio part of exercise.
05:48That's what I realized I liked the most.
05:50So I switched about five years ago to triathlons, swim, bike, and run.
05:55I knew the running part.
05:56Swimming I was comfortable with, but I had never biked before.
05:59And the bike is a really big part of any triathlon.
06:02It takes up more of the time of your race.
06:04So learning how to bike was important.
06:07How did you learn how to bike for a triathlon?
06:09This is one of the things that people do is they set up a stationary bike.
06:12They call it a bike trainer.
06:14This is just an old bike of mine that's just a beater that I don't ride anymore.
06:17And then you mount it on top of this machine, and it connects to my computer.
06:21I actually have it where it mirrors up to the TV up here.
06:25And this program here controls the resistance that's going to happen on the trainer.
06:30So you get a really specific workout, like if you're supposed to be doing intervals one day
06:34or you're supposed to be doing endurance.
06:36You set it up this way, and you can't get out of it because it's not going to let you.
06:40So it kind of keeps you honest, which can be really tough if you're not feeling it.
06:43But you know you're going to get the workout done.
06:45How often do you work out?
06:47I'm in here about four days a week.
06:49And my rides can last anywhere from a half an hour on an easy day to two hours on a long day.
06:55What do you do with your bike when you're on the road?
06:57I actually take this exact bike on the road with me, and I set it up in the hotel room.
07:02So it's just a way that I can stay consistent.
07:05The real answer to that question is you've got to be adaptable.
07:07You've got to be able to roll with what the day's throwing at you and how you feel.
07:11That's part of why I like this sport so much, because I kind of got three choices.
07:14Like if it's early and I'm pumped, I'll get up and find a pool.
07:17If I'm maybe not so motivated, it might be a shorter jog or whatever.
07:20So you kind of just have to go with how you're feeling and how the day is going and be able to pivot.
07:27What's your least favorite thing about working out?
07:29When you really don't want to work out, and you're like, fuck, this fucking sucks, right?
07:32But I always tell myself when I'm finished with the workout, I've never gone,
07:34well, that sucks, I wish I hadn't done that.
07:36Like, it just doesn't work like that, right?
07:38You always feel better when you're done.
07:40You just have to kind of remember that when you're going into it.
07:42What's your most meaningful tattoo?
07:44No, I actually, believe it or not, I don't have any tattoos.
07:46I don't have a problem with tattoos.
07:48I just have never saw something that I liked so much that I wanted to get it.
07:51Do you have any scars?
07:53Emotional, yes. Very many.
07:57Many emotional scars.

08:04I'm a morning guy, for sure.
08:06More like 7 a.m., earlier if I can make myself get up.

08:11Squat.

08:17Crossfit, yay or nay?
08:19I've never done crossfit. I get it. It seems like a good idea, but it seems pretty hard.
08:21Pull-ups or chin-ups?
08:23Chin-ups.
08:25Dumbbells or kettlebells?
08:27Dumbbells, for sure.
08:30Cardio or weights?
08:32Cardio for me.
08:34Big legs or big arms?
08:36Big legs, I guess.
08:38Biggest compliment, jacked, ripped, cut or swole?
08:40I mean, I've been called all those, so it never gets old. They're always good. I'd say ripped.
08:46If you could work out with anyone in the world, dead or alive, who would it be?
08:50Schwarzenegger.
