Damaging vs. 'Threatening Muscles' | Strong Talk | Men's Health

00:00And that's kind of that oversimplified thing, I guess, where everybody says like on Instagram,
00:03they're like, you basically ripped muscles or you torn muscles, quote, unquote,
00:07and then they rebuild. That's totally wrong. But yeah, completely like if you are damaging muscle,
00:14you now have to repair that muscle. And the energy used to repair the muscle is not energy
00:20going into growing the muscle. You need to threaten the muscle. OK, an environment that's
00:26threatening, a.k.a. lifting heavy weights and doing it a bunch of times. But actually damaging
00:30the tissue is fairly counterproductive to growing the tissue. So it's interesting because threatening
00:36threatening muscle, I think that's a really good and different way to put it that I haven't heard
00:40before. So what you're doing when you go into the gym to train is essentially you're trying
00:44to threaten the muscle. And what are some of the ways that you think about doing that when you go
00:48through a workout? Yeah, well, I try not to overcomplicate things, Pat. That's phenomenal,
00:54dude. I wish I had you as a training partner, even when I was putting on muscle myself. Who knows?
00:58I may have been twice the size, but I've always told myself, like, not to overcomplicate things
01:03because the gym could be so it could actually be so kind of otherworldly when you're first
01:09joining a gym or in the pursuit of building muscle. Me, I was a strong 130 pound, you know,
01:15weakling. So for me, I didn't try to overcomplicate things. I really wanted to focus just on eating
01:19enough, training hard enough and rest and recovery. So that was like a little digestible
01:25piece that I could chew and absorb and understand. So I just did that for many years. But I like that
01:31not to threaten the muscle because Lee Haney had a he had analogy stimulate, don't annihilate.
01:36That's kind of like what I think about. Don't don't tear the muscle,
01:40but just threaten it a little bit. Shake it.
