00:00 Something that was unholy and contained now gets an ultimate release. Here's your
00:05 look at the brand new NECA toys, The Conjuring Universe, The Nun, Ultimate
00:08 Valak.
00:26 From The Nun, the terrifying movie in The Conjuring Universe, the demon Valak gets
00:31 the ultimate action figure treatment. This seven inch scale figure is based on
00:34 the demons manifestation as a nun and features a full fabric habit. It's highly
00:38 articulated, comes with interchangeable heads and hands when you want to take
00:41 the whore to the next level, includes orb painting and display stand, comes in a
00:45 display worthy window box packaging with open front flap. Wait a minute, nuns
00:51 don't work on Sundays. Before, of course, we get a closer look, that's a joke to
00:55 Magnum PI in 80s series if anybody was wondering. Let's grab the tape measure
00:59 and see how tall the ultimate Valak stands. Now he or she, if you prefer, is
01:04 only about six and a half inches in height or Valak is about 17 centimeters
01:09 tall. Well it would seem that we're back in the habit of looking at nun figures.
01:13 Not too long ago we re-looked at the retro cloth release of The Nun Valak. You
01:17 can see there's definitely a size difference between the two and sticking
01:20 with The Conjuring Universe, here's as well what The Nun Valak looks like with
01:24 the evil doll Annabelle. Valak does come in clue with seven accessories, although
01:28 right now you're only looking at five. The other two, by the way, just happens to
01:31 be a display stand that's currently keeping Valak upright and as well I've
01:35 also added the cross. The cross I just knew was something I was gonna lose so I
01:38 took the liberty of already adding that. It's just a case of popping the head off
01:42 and just draping, of course, the cross around her neck, his neck, and then of
01:47 course just popping the head back in place. You really don't even have to
01:49 really take the head off, all you really need to take the veil off and then you
01:52 can easily just fit the cross around his neck that way. I did also say as well
01:56 that this figure comes in clue with a display stand. It's a small
01:59 enough stand but it does the job because with the small feet, unfortunately for
02:03 Valak, he has some difficult time to stand. So just standing him on his own
02:07 he's gonna teeter a little bit. I'm glad to see that the folks over at NECA
02:10 Toys did in fact include a display stand. So we'll just go ahead and reattach that
02:14 onto the feet. The feet have a little bit of a problem, we'll talk more about that
02:17 in a moment. First though, the figure comes in clue with the painting. The
02:21 painting, I'll tell you right away, I'm a little disappointed with. Not the fact
02:23 that it's been printed to look like the painting from The Conjuring 2, but more
02:27 for the fact it's actually been done here on cardboard. On the back it looks
02:30 like stretched canvas. It even has, of course, the board frame, but just
02:34 disappointed by the fact it had to be cardboard. I know usually with
02:36 accessories like this, newspapers, paintings, anything that was really made
02:40 of paper or something similar like that in a TV or movie series usually then
02:45 gets replicated in cardboard. I just always really worry that cardboard just
02:48 doesn't have longevity to it. It does fit though in the hands of Valak, although
02:52 not easy. You kind of have to bring the arms up a little bit and actually if you
02:56 really look at the hands too, the way they've got the fingers, you can kind of
02:59 slot the painting and have them resting on the fingers, but you really want to
03:02 make sure the hands are as close together as you can get them just again
03:05 to kind of rest them on there. Like I said, it's not an easy thing to do. It's
03:09 more just a balancing act than anything else, but you can have Valak actually
03:12 holding the painting. It's just not super easy, that's all. The figure also comes
03:16 in clue with a bunch of other things like for example swappable hands. Now the
03:19 hands don't look that much different from the hands that we have right now. I
03:23 have popped already one of the hands off. It may have been more the relaxed hand,
03:27 the very skinny looking fingers stretching out to grab you. Nicely
03:31 painted for what they are. I've already again popped this one off and I
03:35 replaced it with another kind of mauling hand, but he also comes in clue with
03:38 another hand that basically is not that far different from the one that we
03:41 already get here. I mean if you really look at the hands, they are almost
03:44 identical to one another, which really does beg the question why would they
03:48 have even included this hand if it simply is just the same one as the other
03:51 one? Popping out the hands, by the way, is just a case. Let's not remove the veil in
03:54 the process. You sort of have to wiggle them back and forth. The posts at least
03:58 are long enough, but you do want to still wiggle them either way just to ensure
04:01 that you're not breaking the peg off in the process. Not to be spitting on
04:05 everybody doing that. The figure also comes included with the orb that holds
04:09 inside the blood of Christ. You can see, or maybe you'd be able to see there, that
04:14 it actually has already been cracked. A nice little touch to add that as a
04:18 reference to the movie. Nicely done. It's mostly done here in a
04:22 translucent clear plastic and then they've painted actually the frame of
04:26 the gold nicely in paint. The chain itself is a real chain. That's nice to
04:31 see as opposed to just sculpting in place. I suppose you could loop
04:34 it around the arm of Valak if you want to, as a possibility of way of
04:39 displaying the figure. The last thing that comes included with Valak is an alternate
04:42 portrait that has the screaming face. I did want to bring in the one that we got
04:46 here from the Ultimate or with the Retro Cloth release, so you can see the
04:49 difference between the two. I will say I think I like the sculpting better
04:54 on the Ultimate release, but I think I like the paint a lot more on the Retro
04:57 release. The Retro brings some necessary dark blacks around the areas of the lips
05:01 and the eyes. I feel in a way it's almost too faded here with the Ultimate release.
05:05 I would have just brought the colors up a little bit more to match that of the
05:08 Retro Cloth release. The Retro also benefits from having more visible veins
05:12 there on the tops of what Bonnie Aron's the actress that played of course the
05:15 Nun. I just think like this is a better painted head sculpt, but I think I like
05:19 the sculpting on this one just a little bit more. If only they could have just
05:23 Frankenstein the two together to give us an Ultimate, literally an Ultimate version
05:27 of Valak's head sculpt with this kind of paint and this kind of sculpt. Changing
05:30 out the head by the way is just a case, first of all you want to remove the veil.
05:33 I did want to I suppose show you guys what the defaulted head sculpt looks
05:36 like. More just a neutral expression of Valak's face. To bring back in the one
05:40 that we got here from the Retro Cloth release, the veil keeps falling off. Sorry
05:43 for that. You can see again like it's very similar, but I feel like the paint
05:47 is a little bit better handled here when the Retro Cloth release than what we got
05:50 with the Ultimate. Changing out the head by the way is just a case of removing
05:53 the veil once again. You want to make sure that you don't lose the cross in
05:57 the process. I'm just gonna pop the head off the existing ball joint. One thing
06:01 that kind of had me perplexed was the fact that they decided to use of all
06:04 things the larger ball joints on the top of the head instead of actually using
06:08 just that little post. We've gotten that lots of times, mostly like the
06:12 Jason Voorhees figures have usually had like a little post cylinder. I'm surprised
06:15 they didn't do something similar to that instead of using a ball joint. Ball joint
06:18 just seems like outdated honestly because just again like if you're
06:22 changing out the heads all you really need to do is make sure that ensure at
06:25 least that head attaches properly. With the ball joints I just noticed that
06:29 it never stays properly. You really have to work a lot harder to get a head like
06:34 this on a ball joint than you really would with a post or a cylinder. Again
06:38 just getting ahead. I had this easier done earlier. You may even want to heat
06:41 this up with a little bit of hot water and again the head would just basically
06:44 pop in place like that. I think the plastic is cool just a little bit. I
06:48 want to spend the entire review of course just trying to get this blasted
06:51 head on here but we'll just kind of twist it on as best as we can get it. Do
06:55 I have it all the way on there? I don't. The thing I'm worried also about is I
06:59 just don't want to break the cross string. You know what I'll do is we'll
07:02 come back to that evil head sculpt as we get to the final looks of the figure.
07:05 Let's just get the original defaulted head sculpt in place and we'll put the
07:09 veil back in. Just remind me if you can. Everybody can you remind me?
07:13 We'll put the evil head sculpt back on Valak's body and we jump over to final
07:16 looks with that. Okay thank you very much. So obviously we're not going to
07:20 change the head just yet. I might have to go back and just heat it again but just
07:23 to show you what the anchor head sculpt looks like with the more neutral
07:25 expression. I prefer really to honestly have all my nuns usually
07:31 just display with the neutral expressions. I think it's a little
07:33 creepier than having them always just screaming like this. On the back of all
07:37 of them by the way you can have the bonnet. Is it the bonnet? It's tied up
07:40 very nicely on the back of the nun's head. So nicely sculpted there as well
07:44 even though you really wouldn't ever really get the chance to see that
07:46 unless you take the veil off. And then of course for the rest of the
07:49 habit it consists of of course the top piece. Of course you've got the bonnet.
07:53 You've got the the main shoulder piece that goes across. Nice up-to-date when it
07:57 comes to nuns attire and of course you got a little belt there as well that's
08:00 all done nicely in a rubberized material. The hands themselves by the way...
08:03 just get the veil back on... I don't know if you've already noticed but the fact
08:07 that the veil actually does have a wireframe so it runs from the top and it
08:10 runs all the way down the side so you can usually manipulate this. I had done
08:14 that before with the retro relays but the problem with that though is when you
08:17 bend it too much then it's always the hardest thing to try to get it straight
08:20 again. So I'm not gonna really try to move it around too much. For the arms
08:24 though one thing I really like about the arms is that they're very very thin.
08:26 Nicely detailed. The paint doesn't just stop at the wrist it continues its merry
08:31 little way up the forearms as well. You got that off coloring of the skin. Really
08:35 again thin looking hands. For her legs... his legs... I keep doing that bringing up
08:41 this the dress a little bit. It's actually got a couple of layers to it.
08:43 So you've got the main black dress and then you've got that little swatch of
08:47 fabric that drapes over top of it. Somewhat indecent for a nun but just to
08:51 lift up the dress so you can actually see what it looks like underneath. The
08:54 legs are the one thing that I've noticed is really tight in this figure. I always
08:57 kind of have the legs kind of in a more bent formation like this just
09:00 because I find it's easier for the legs to stand straight. If you actually had
09:04 the legs bent or straight like this I find the figure wobbles a little bit
09:08 more. So I compensate a little bit by having the knees bent like this and you
09:11 can see as well there's the ankles. The ankles aren't quite the same coloring
09:14 because obviously they would have used plastic here and they would have just
09:17 tried to replicate that but to be honestly fair you're only gonna be
09:20 seeing all of its buried anyways by outfit. So you never really would be able
09:23 to see what it looks like underneath the skirt. Now for the articulation on the
09:27 nun we're just gonna keep the veil off for right now. The nun's head is gonna be
09:30 on that ball joint as frustrating as it may be. Rotates the head all the way
09:33 around. The head looks up and down and back and forth. The upper body also is
09:38 one thing that does have it seems to be like a ball joint although me for me at
09:43 least trying to rotate it I only can seem to swivel it back and forth it
09:46 doesn't have as much as of an easier time of bending up and down this way. The
09:51 arms come out at 90 degrees and of course you can take those arms and move
09:54 them forward and you can move them back. He has a swivel there at the top there
09:59 it also has a hinge in the elbow just to bring up by the way the elbows. I wanted
10:03 to show you guys it's not a completely bare arm all the way up you actually get
10:07 yourself a bit of a sleeve there as well. I don't know why they would have
10:10 actually sculpted so much there considering it be covered by anyways the
10:13 fabric. You can see it's a little bit different it's not completely a bare arm
10:17 all the way up. Now the figure does have a split on the legs you can bring the
10:20 legs forward bring the legs back and actually just to bring this up a little
10:23 bit there's a swivel at the top only by just the way it's been assembled. There's
10:27 a single hinge in the knee that allows the lower leg to rotate and then the
10:30 ankles move back and forth this way and you can also rock them back and forth
10:34 this way as well. I know I did already state this but stating it again there's
10:37 pegs on the undersides of Valak's feet so again you can make use of that display
10:41 stand which I definitely will be using. Thank goodness they did have one because
10:44 I think on its own the feet are way too small to accommodate a proper stance and
10:49 again we'll just get Valak to stand as best as we can get it. Go ahead and get
10:53 the veil over top of the head as well. I like to look at this Valak. I'm almost
10:58 even tempted as well to get a second one of these so I can have one display with
11:01 the anchor portrait even though I really prefer the neutral expression that way I
11:05 can have two different ways of displaying Valak on the shelf. I haven't
11:08 yet done that with the Retro Cloth release. Speaking of the Retro Cloth
11:10 release let's bring him in there so you can see the differences between the two.
11:14 Yeah now overall from head to toe I think this is a better constructed Nun but I
11:19 gotta say like the paintwork is still much better on the Retro Cloth release.
11:22 The colors a little bit more richer, the blacks around the eyes and blacks around
11:25 the mouth is a lot more just there's a nicer contrast a nicer contrast with I
11:30 think what the way they've painted the head sculpt on this one that doesn't
11:33 quite live up to it when it comes to the Ultimate release. Other than that though
11:36 I mean obviously if you are collecting more the Ultimate figures you're
11:38 probably just going to come completely passing on the idea of getting a Retro
11:41 Cloth release but again like I do think between the two this one's painted
11:45 better this one's constructed better but if you did want to get yourself an
11:48 Ultimate release I'm not disappointed by what they've actually done with the
11:51 figure release here. I ended up taking a little bit of holy water hot holy water
11:55 to be exact and heated the bottom of the head for at least the angrier portrait
11:59 so it would easily plug properly in place onto the ball joint. Still a little
12:03 confused as to why NECA decided to use a ball joint on the top of the head
12:06 considering you got a small frame like this putting any bit of pressure could
12:10 potentially have broken that post I think rather they should have just used
12:13 this cylinder post something that we would have gotten with like the Jason
12:16 Voorhees figures I think it just would have been a lot easier to attach the
12:19 head. I wonder what specifically dictates when they decide to use a ball joint over
12:23 a post system because again for the smaller frame here Bonnie Aaron's is the
12:28 none I just think it would made more sense to use the post rather than the
12:31 ball joint. The figure is nice for what it is I still think like again as I
12:35 already mentioned this review a couple of times the paints handled better on
12:37 the Retro Cloth release but not slouching at all this one actually turned
12:40 out to be a really nice looking figure. I know some people just generally don't
12:43 like the Retro Cloth release figures and I get that if you are one that
12:47 prefer to get say the Ultimate release figures then you're obviously going to
12:50 be in the market of getting this one over the Retro Cloth release and I get
12:53 that. This one has a better looking body because of course it's not utilizing the
12:57 same Retro Cloth bodies that we always get without most of the figures like the
13:00 female figures usually have their designated female bodies unless you're
13:03 like Bea Arthur. Bea Arthur from the Golden Girls her Retro Cloth release
13:07 actually used a male body but I digress. This one actually does have again that
13:11 thinner frame and it does benefit one thing also as well this has the
13:14 additional accessories that the Retro Cloth release didn't have. Retro's Nun
13:18 only came with a alternate head portrait and that was it. This one actually comes
13:22 with the orb although it's empty it doesn't have the blood of Christ anymore
13:24 inside. It does also come with a painting a little disappointed that had to be
13:27 cardboard and it does also come with some swappable heads not to mention
13:30 again the two alternate head sculpts. Yeah a nice looking figure for this one
13:33 I mean if you guys are interested to get this one for yourself the Ultimate Nun
13:36 Valak is available right now in retail stores and online and you guys already
13:40 had the chance to pick up this one let me know down below in the comment
13:42 section what you guys think of it and of the two nuns that we've gotten from
13:46 from NECA toys which one do you think is a better looking figure? Is it the
13:50 Retro Cloth release or is it the Ultimate version of Nun Valak? Let me
13:53 know down below in the comment section also as well if you guys enjoyed this
13:55 video one hit the like if you guys are loving the content you guys are seeing
13:58 and you'd like to stick around for more we are gonna be looking at some more NECA
14:02 reviews. I know that's sometimes for most of you guys the thing you like to come
14:05 back to this channel for. I like to think you're coming back to this channel for
14:08 other things as well but we definitely have a lot more NECA reviews lined up
14:10 and coming your way also as always guys thanks for watching see you guys next
14:15 time
