00:00I think Keldor is starting to show some signs of something sinister.
00:03Here's a look at Mattel Matthew Universe Origins, Mattel Creations, Demoman, Evil Spirit of Despondos.
00:24Two heads may be better than one, but when it comes to Motu villains,
00:28three heads are badder than one.
00:30Our Matthew Universe Demoman figure makes his first ever appearance in the Origins line,
00:34bringing three interchangeable heads with him.
00:37One features his iconic Demoman look, another has a lime green Skeletor-like vibe,
00:42and the third is an alternate Skeletor-style version, inspired by the artwork of Alfredo Alcala.
00:49Well, now we know who we can thank for Skeletor, but who do we still thank for Demoman?
00:53That award goes to artist and creator Mark Taylor.
00:56Taylor had been working on a Conan-style story of his own, predating Matthew Universe,
01:00when he was drawing this character, who at the time was known as the Merciless.
01:03Sure enough, somebody had walked by, saw the sketch of Merciless,
01:06and mistook it for an early concept for Skeletor.
01:08Skeletor at that time was going by D-Man, or Demon,
01:12so fans have sort of adopted the name for this character over time as calling him Demoman.
01:16Needless to say, the only way to get Demoman at the time was through Mattel Creations.
01:20Mattel Creations' website, unfortunately by no surprise to any, has since sold out on the figure.
01:25D-Man is going to stand at 5.5 inches in height, or he's going to be roughly 14 centimeters tall.
01:31Now, up to this time, there wasn't really much of a bio to Demoman.
01:35Until that was, Matthew Universe classics came along.
01:38They gave the backstory of Demoman that Hordak had been banished to Despondos,
01:42and in order to get his pupil Keldor at the time to release him,
01:45he merged him with the extra-dimensional being called Demoman.
01:49Of course, having the two merged together created what we all now know as Skeletor.
01:54Speaking of Skeletor, though, I did want to bring in Skeletor,
01:56and the reason why I did want to also bring this one in is not only just for the fact that he's also got the Keldor body.
02:02I really should have brought in the Keldor for the comparisons,
02:04but also as well that this head sculpt comes also included here with Demoman.
02:08Also, some other figures of an origin standpoint.
02:11Here's the original origins of Beastman, of course, from the Lords of Power.
02:14Here's also the Lords of Power version of Merman,
02:17and even though I don't have Keldor here at the time, here's what the Kronos looks like,
02:21a precursor of what we get with Trapjaw.
02:23To help piece together everything I just finished saying,
02:26to come packaged along with Demoman,
02:28he gets himself a mini-comic that fittingly is called Soul Keeper.
02:31Demoman, as you can see, though, is front and center.
02:34The split psyche of Skeletor on one side and Keldor on the other.
02:37There's no advertisements being that this is a Mattel creations,
02:40so there's no mention at all of other future waves of Motu figures,
02:43but though flipping through the very limited number of pages we have inside,
02:47we've got Skeletor, though, sort of being torn by the thing that's inside of him.
02:51It says, I know you're in there somewhere, monster.
02:54Keldor, remember your promise.
02:56And he says, shut up. Get out of my head.
02:58That's not until Evil Lin comes along and splits the two.
03:01And then from that, Demoman is released again.
03:03Mentioning already, there's a backstory to Keldor,
03:06and at the very end of it, we get a reveal from Hordak himself.
03:10Again, some advertisements there for figures we might get down.
03:13A little Modulok. I'd love to get a Modulok.
03:15But a nice little mini-comic.
03:16Again, it kind of helps to learn a little bit more about Demoman,
03:19if you didn't already know anything about the character.
03:22I'm going to put that off to the side.
03:24The figure does come with two weapons, one of which being a very dangerous-looking blade.
03:28Look at this. It's all molded here in a very nice silver plastic.
03:31It doesn't seem to be the case between the sword or the mace, for that matter,
03:35that neither one of them really have any additional paints.
03:37The silver works quite well, and it's actually, in fact,
03:39the same silver that they use for the shoulders and his gauntlets.
03:42Unfortunately, though, there's no additional storage, though.
03:44At least the figure does have gripping hands,
03:46so if you wanted to have him wielding both weapons, he can do that.
03:49I did notice, though, with his hands that the grips are very small,
03:52so you have to kind of pry the fingers first away,
03:55and then get the sword and the mace in both his hands.
03:58Now, unfortunately, though, while the sword works okay,
04:00the only thing I did have, though, problems-wise,
04:03is I feel like the mace is a little too heavy.
04:05Whether it be this hand or it be this hand, it doesn't really matter.
04:08Whatever hand you end up putting it in,
04:09it just seems like it ends up making the wrist really loose.
04:12Unfortunately, though, like I said,
04:13there is no storage, though, on the back of his body.
04:15I wish that there was, like, a little loop right here, for example.
04:18Maybe not for at least to hold the mace,
04:20but at the very least to hold the sword.
04:22I suppose you could take, really, the sword
04:24and slide it down the back like this,
04:26and there's a little bit of storage space there,
04:28but there really isn't, obviously, a dedicated loop
04:31specifically for holding his weapon.
04:33One thing I, unfortunately, have to kind of deal with regularly
04:36when it comes to this figure
04:37is the floppy nature of his shoulder pads.
04:39The shoulder pads don't attach to anything,
04:41so you're going to find this happening a lot on the figure.
04:45I wish there was a way that this would attach.
04:47They obviously have made this loose in a way
04:49so that if you wanted to take off the head,
04:51you could just remove the shoulder pads altogether,
04:53and then underneath that,
04:54you basically just have yourself a regular tunic.
04:56Of course, this is the defaulted head sculpt, though, for Demoman.
04:59I don't know how many times I've seen, like, customized,
05:01talented customizers design their version of Demoman.
05:04Demoman has sort of a cult following.
05:06It's nice that we actually have ourselves now
05:08a physical plastic release of him.
05:10There has been Demoman released over the years.
05:12Obviously, the MOTU Classics did release a Demoman,
05:15but this is obviously the closest one now.
05:17This is the origins version of him.
05:19I've got to say, he looks really good.
05:21Now, he does have a couple of alternate head sculpts,
05:23both of which I happen to think that have been released before,
05:25so I'm just going to put them down for...
05:27The obvious one is this one right here.
05:29This really isn't no different than the one that we got
05:31with the two-pack Kronos and Keldor.
05:33The only thing I would say, though, is that the paint isn't as good.
05:36You can see there's a lot more of nice, darker greens
05:38around the areas of the skeleton face.
05:40They have still kept the ruby stones,
05:42which I kind of would have hoped that this would have been
05:44one thing that they would have left off.
05:46The ruby stones worked okay for this head sculpt,
05:48but being that they are using, obviously,
05:50the exact same mold, it would have been nice
05:52if maybe they had left the stones off altogether.
05:54It's not like they do any bit of a job of shining.
05:56They're quite dark, in fact.
05:58At least these ones glowed a little bit more
06:00when you had the light reflecting off of them.
06:02Yeah, the head sculpt is a bit of a downgrade,
06:04I'd hate to say, but if you did want to use, say,
06:06this head sculpt for the one that we got with Keldor,
06:08obviously, it's just a case of popping this one off,
06:11replacing it with this head sculpt here.
06:13I mean, if you want something a little bit more,
06:15I don't know, like cartoon accurate,
06:17or maybe a little bit more to the comics that doesn't have
06:19as much of the color, this head was also a little harder
06:21to get back onto the body.
06:23But, you know, again, it kind of pulls back
06:25a little bit of the detail, but if you like a little bit more
06:27of a simpler design to the paint scheme,
06:29this head sculpt might work a little bit better for you.
06:31Obviously, this head is also going to work
06:33with the body here for Demoman.
06:35Just pop this one off.
06:37Again, I don't know what it is.
06:39There's something about this socket that's extremely tight.
06:41Pop the head sculpt back in place,
06:43because I don't want to lose this head.
06:45There we go.
06:47I seem to be having a hard time getting heads back in place.
06:49And then we also have this head,
06:51which I feel is the two-pack skeleton set.
06:54Now, I don't have that set yet, but I think
06:56they are probably using the exact same head sculpt.
06:58This one does have, of course, the helmet over top of it.
07:01The helmet's not removable.
07:03I was hoping for a way that there would be a way
07:05to detach this, almost as if the helmet
07:07is on top of the skeletal face,
07:09but it doesn't seem like you can actually remove it.
07:11Either one of the heads, by the way,
07:13can be swapped out with Demoman.
07:15Out of the package, though, I will say that Demoman's head
07:17is really loose.
07:19Speaking of me not having an easy time
07:21getting the heads onto the ball joints,
07:23I thought, okay, maybe the head isn't completely on there.
07:25But it is, and it's really loose.
07:27It shouldn't be this loose, really,
07:29considering it's a ball joint and it's a ball socket.
07:31Anyways, if you did want to change out the heads,
07:33we're just going to pop this one off.
07:35First, we'll replace it with the Keldor head sculpt,
07:37or, obviously, the Skeletor that came
07:39with the Keldor head.
07:41And, you know, again, it works okay.
07:43Obviously, I think if you're going to be
07:45picking yourself up, Demoman is the idea in mind
07:47that you're going to be likely displaying,
07:49I feel, with this head sculpt.
07:51Why would you really go back to using a Skeletor
07:53unless, again, you want to use the idea
07:55or conceive the idea that they're a split personality?
07:57And, of course, if you wanted to,
07:59you could just pop that off and replace it
08:01with the Skull head, which, I have to say,
08:03kind of looks laughably small.
08:05Clearly, this is a head that belongs to a smaller body.
08:07It just doesn't work, honestly, I feel,
08:09with a regular Origins body.
08:11But, again, if you want to, you can take
08:13the shoulder pads off altogether.
08:15So if this flops around and bothers you a lot,
08:17just simply remove it, and you've got
08:19the tunic piece instead.
08:21In fact, actually, there's a couple of pieces.
08:23There's a piece also right here, as well,
08:25that you could remove, technically, if you want to.
08:27I guess for this guy to look the most like Demo Man,
08:29I'll probably want to keep the shoulder pads back in place.
08:31Pop the head back in place.
08:33The sculpting of the beard looks good.
08:35Of course, we now get a little bit more
08:37of a lighter yellowish-green added in there.
08:39The coloring of the teeth look good.
08:41You've got, of course, the sockets of the eyes,
08:43the nasal cavity of what's left of it, at least.
08:45Love the little horn mohawk that he has
08:47on the top of his head.
08:49And nice little sculpted ears on the sides, as well.
08:51It's a good-looking head.
08:53Like, I have no fault with it,
08:55but it shouldn't be too loose.
08:57It shouldn't be this loose on a ball joint.
08:59It's a simple concept.
09:01You've got a hole, you've got a ball joint.
09:03Having those two connect,
09:05you would think that this would just stay in better place.
09:07Of course, the tunic is nicely sculpted here, as well.
09:09I feel like we've gotten this before.
09:11I don't want to say, like, a savage He-Man.
09:13I feel like, have we not, in fact, gotten this tunic?
09:15I'm sure it's released at some point.
09:17Underneath that, by the way, he does have
09:19just a regular kind of loincloth
09:21that's colored in the same plastic.
09:23The body parts swap out the exact same way
09:25as every other Origins figure that we've had a look at.
09:27The plastic, though, looks good.
09:29I mean, the green is nicely done here.
09:31It's one of those few examples, as well,
09:33of a character that doesn't actually have boots.
09:35This one just has webbed toes instead.
09:37Now, for the sculpting here and the articulation
09:39for Demoman, the head's going to be on a ball joint,
09:41but, again, really loose.
09:43It shouldn't be as loose as it is out of the packaging.
09:45You know, I will say, though, one other thing,
09:47one other little nitpick, little tiny nitpick,
09:49is that the coloring of the plastic
09:51for his arms, the body, and obviously the neck
09:53isn't quite jiving with the coloring
09:55that they've used for the head.
09:57I don't know why the head is a lighter color
09:59when you would think that they would have just
10:01molded it in the exact same color of plastic,
10:03unless it's all solely been painted.
10:05But you would think that they would start
10:07with a base plastic, and wouldn't that be
10:09the better fit, just using the exact same green
10:11and just painting the details over top of it?
10:13The shoulder, I should say the shoulders,
10:15the waist swivels, the arms do hinge outward.
10:17They're a little tighter on this figure.
10:19They can be tight here, but they can't be tight here.
10:21You can move the arms forward and back.
10:23He has a swivel here in the bicep,
10:25which also works as an elbow joint.
10:27It's a little harder to move the joint on this side,
10:29just because, again, he's got this gauntlet,
10:31this little gauntlet, I shouldn't say even little,
10:33this large gauntlet spike that he has on his forearm.
10:35And the hands rotate all the way around.
10:37This arm isn't going to have as much of the hindrance,
10:39just because there's nothing getting in the way.
10:41You can easily rotate the arm back and forth,
10:43and again, you've got your hinge in the elbow.
10:45Legs split out, take the legs and move forward,
10:47there's a bit of a swivel there at the top.
10:49There's more of a swivel down below.
10:51Little on the loose side here, too.
10:53These figures should not be as loose
10:55immediately getting them out of the packaging,
10:57and I will say they're a little loose in the knees, too.
10:59Swivel at the ankle, or I guess that would be
11:01the calf section there that swivels.
11:03Get your ankle pivot back and forth,
11:05and an ankle rocker as well.
11:07Hindsight, of course, being 2020,
11:09I probably should have really brought in Hordak
11:11and also Keldor, but I was so anxious, of course,
11:13to get down to looking at Demoman.
11:15Really, he looks good.
11:17Built-wise, he's a little loose in some of the areas.
11:19His head, right out of the packaging,
11:21shouldn't be as loose as it is.
11:23Also, his knees.
11:25Now, his knees, you could maybe justify,
11:27well, they've used the mold before,
11:29and maybe just over time, that's mold degradation.
11:31To have this guy already getting loose
11:33already out of the packaging,
11:35it goes without saying, Master Universe figures,
11:37over time, when you have these things in bags,
11:39for example, or you're just doing what I'm doing right now,
11:41they develop looseness over time,
11:43immediately get this guy out of the package.
11:45Since this guy has sold out,
11:47Demoman has started to go a little bit higher
11:49now in price on eBay.
11:51Expect now, the original price,
11:53at least what I was looking at when it comes to Mattel creations,
11:55I think the figure was sold for around $20, which was a steal.
11:57Unfortunately, though, by the time that I got to it,
11:59it completely sold out,
12:01but I was lucky enough to find a seller that was listing it
12:03over on the Facebook groups,
12:05and I got this guy for, I want to say like $35,
12:07which wasn't bad at all.
12:09I was willing to spend that price if it meant
12:11getting a Demoman in my collection.
12:13I was even tempted at one point to do a custom version
12:15of Demoman, but I mean, let's face facts,
12:17there's no way I could match the quality
12:19and the care that they did to sculpting
12:21the one that we got here from Mattel.
12:23Although, again, it does have a few little problems.
12:25The shoulders sit way too loose.
12:27They flop around a lot because there's nothing really
12:29attaching them to the rest of the body.
12:31The head is also, again, one thing that was surprising me.
12:33It shouldn't be as loose as it is.
12:35If you overlook some of the looseness issues
12:37that face, unfortunately, right now, Demoman,
12:39all in all, though, he's a nice looking figure.
12:41If you're a little bit more familiar
12:43with the lore, either with the original concept
12:45design of Demoman, or of course
12:47the expanded backstory that Master Universe
12:49classics afforded him,
12:51if you are familiar with stuff like that,
12:53you might want to pick this guy up and add him to your collection.
12:55Demoman sure is an interesting
12:57looking character, but I don't think one that would
12:59have worked well in retail. I feel like
13:01with this, sort of the story needs to precede him.
13:03You need to be able to tell people in advance,
13:05hey, listen, this guy predates
13:07Master Universe, at one point
13:09even being mistaken for an early concept for Skeletor.
13:11Hey guys, this guy
13:13was actually split with the Psyche of Kaldor
13:15to create Skeletor that we know all now.
13:17Although that can't easily
13:19be put on packaging, you'll usually
13:21only be given a little bit of a tagline
13:23just below the character's name on the front of the packaging,
13:25and I don't think that would have been nearly enough
13:27to draw the attention. If anything,
13:29kids and collectors, casual collectors, would have just
13:31walked past him and said, oh, who's
13:33the green skinned guy with the pointy ears
13:35and spikes for a mohawk?
13:37I think this guy relishes better
13:39being an online exclusive, but
13:41sort of the problems that make this guy being
13:43an online exclusive is that he's scooped up fast.
13:45At one point, as Mattel Creations,
13:47he was being sold for $20.
13:49Now to go on places like eBay, you're expected
13:51to pay anywhere from $35 to $40.
13:53If you're a fan of the
13:55fandom that goes along with him,
13:57I think it's worth the spending of the $35 or $40
13:59to get him, but I wouldn't spend anything more.
14:01A casual collector, I don't think
14:03necessarily needs to get this one. I feel like
14:05one that actually appreciates the
14:07significance of Demoman.
14:09Probably, I could say, spend the $30
14:11if you have to spend more than the $20, because
14:13obviously this guy has sold out over on Mattel Creations.
14:15I spent $35 for him.
14:17I don't mind that. I would have not spent anything
14:19more than that. I think anything after $40
14:21is probably a little bit crazy. So if you find
14:23a guy for a decent price, and you like the
14:25look of the character, or you like the backstory that
14:27goes along with him, definitely worth
14:29adding to your collection. What do you guys
14:31think of the Mattel Creations Demoman? Have you
14:33guys had the chance to grab this guy when he was first
14:35online, or have you now tried to
14:37scoop this one up in the aftermarket
14:39and hope that you're not paying too much for him?
14:41Also, let me know what other characters
14:43from maybe perhaps the back... I would love
14:45still at some point to get a more
14:47available release of the
14:49Lords of Power Skeletor.
14:51Up to this point, I think Skeletor was released as
14:53a PowerCon
14:55box set that had
14:57the Lords of Power Skeletor. I do hope
14:59at one point maybe we even get a Mattel Creations
15:01version of Lords of Power Skeletor.
15:03But what other obscure character
15:05from the lore of Master Universe would you like to see
15:07Mattel create next for the Mattel Creations?
15:09Let me know down below in the comment section.
15:11If you guys did enjoy this video, though, do it a solid
15:13third like. You guys want to stick around for more so?
15:15I hope so. Even though we are wrapping up
15:17right now the backstory of Skeletor,
15:19we are also going to be looking at some more
15:21MOTU stuff in the upcoming reviews, all coming your way
15:23this week. So making sure you're coming back
15:25on a regular basis. As always, thanks for watching.
15:27See you guys next time.
