00:00 In Peru, social movements continue to protest against the government of Dino Aboluerte,
00:16 calling for Congress to be shut down and for early elections.
00:23 In Spain, after the election results of July 23rd, the president of the government, Pedro
00:28 Sánchez, has called the last Council of Ministers before holidays.
00:36 And Tel Assur turns 18 years, taking a stand for voiceless peoples, bringing forward the
00:41 truth of Latin America and being the counterpart of the hegemonic narratives.
00:52 Hello from the headquarters of Tel Assur English in Havana, Cuba.
00:56 This is From the South.
00:57 I'm Yaren Corr, Gladys Quesada, and these are the news.
01:01 The Argentine government announced on Monday that it will implement four economic measures
01:06 linked to the dollar, the imports and taxes, after reaching a technical agreement in principle
01:12 with the International Monetary Fund, the IMF.
01:15 The measures will modify the value of the dollar for the series of foreign trade operations
01:20 and for the purchase of dollars by savers.
01:23 With these decisions, they intend to increase the central bank's reserves and increase the
01:28 tax collection.
01:29 Everything indicates that the measures will also impact the rate of inflation.
01:34 Package of economic measures to tackle macroeconomic imbalances and meet its debt commitments,
01:40 with the aim of raising up to $2 billion.
01:43 On the other hand, they claim that the fiscal package has the backing of the International
01:48 Monetary Fund in the midst of the negotiation of a new technical agreement.
01:58 In Peru, social movements continue to protest against the government of Dina Bolorte, calling
02:03 for the Congress to be shut down and for early elections.
02:06 Scores of demonstrators are departing from Puno and other regions towards Lima, the capital.
02:12 The head of the movement in Juliaca, Ernesto Flores, said that recent assemblies with other
02:18 regional leaders have agreed to hold daily demonstrations in Lima, which could be extended
02:23 till July 29.
02:26 Other than demanding the resignation of Dina Bolorte, the demonstrators are also demanding
02:31 justice for the 70 people killed and over 1,800 wounded at demonstrations held early
02:39 this year, arising from the deposition by the Congress of the former constitutional
02:44 president Pedro Castillo.
02:50 In Ecuador, political violence deepens, with less than a month to go before the next elections.
02:56 This Sunday, the mayor of the town of Manta was assassinated after an armored attack.
03:01 According to the reconstruction of the events, the mayor, Agustin Intriago, was coordinating
03:05 a construction site in a sector when a subject shot six times in his direction.
03:11 Local media reported that a woman was also killed during the attack.
03:15 The attack takes place while the campaign for the first round of the presidential and
03:19 legislative elections is advancing.
03:21 In this regard, government authorities regret the death of the official.
03:31 The residents of the community of Santa Marta, north of El Salvador, denounce strong military
03:36 deployment in the area, which coincides with social mobilizations in favor of the environment
03:42 and against mining.
03:44 Through those networks, social leaders and neighbors of the town in the province of Cabañas
03:48 report a contingent of between 70 and 100 military personnel.
03:53 The movement of Salvadoran armed forces began the occupation of Santa Marta on Saturday.
03:58 Neighbors of the area report that they tried to enter the community house without success,
04:04 and express concern that no one has explained the reason for their presence.
04:09 Environmental activists in the area have been heavily harassed in recent months by the authorities.
04:30 And now we move on to other topics.
04:31 In Greece, the environmental crisis worsens as the hours go by.
04:35 Strong forest fires raise temperatures and force further evacuations.
04:40 An urgent announcement from the emergency service calls the residents of several districts
04:45 of the island of Corfu to evacuate immediately.
04:48 While in the island of Rhodes, 30,000 people were evacuated.
04:52 This Monday in Corfu, flames are dangerously close to urban centers.
04:56 As a consequence, the sweltering temperatures have exceeded 40 degrees Celsius.
05:01 The Greek Prime Minister, Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, thanked the governments of Cordufinia,
05:07 Turkey and Egypt for sending firefighter equipment.
05:15 And now let's take a short break.

05:30 a
05:59 Welcome back.
06:00 On Monday in Spain, with almost 90% of the total votes counted, the ruling party increases
06:06 the chances of Pedro Sánchez's re-election, while the right wing, despite winning more
06:11 votes, does not have a majority to govern.
06:14 The Popular Party obtained the largest representation in the parliament, with more than 30% of the
06:19 votes.
06:20 However, the Socialist Party has almost the same amount of votes, while the Vox Party
06:25 obtained the third place.
06:27 In this sense, the party of Pedro Sánchez could be re-elected again by the parliament,
06:32 while the right wing does not have much chance.
06:35 The statistics register an increase of four points of the participation rate in comparison
06:40 to the elections of 2019.
06:43 And in the case that none of the postulant parties obtains the 176 necessary votes, the
06:49 elections will be repeated as occurred in 2015 and 2019.
07:00 In this context, the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, has called on Monday the last Council
07:04 of Ministers, before the holiday break.
07:06 On Tuesday, the chief executive will be at the head of the council.
07:10 Since it is now an acting government, some decisions are limited.
07:14 For example, bills cannot be passed.
07:16 This will be the last meeting of the body as it stands.
07:19 When they meet again on August 17th, the courts of the new legislature should have already
07:24 been constituted.
07:26 However, and after what many analysts consider to be the triumph of pluralism, it remains
07:31 to be seen whether there will be a deadlock that will force a repeat election.
07:42 In this way, the Prime Minister of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, reaffirmed the
07:46 failure of the retrograde bloc that saw the country's regression.
07:52 I believe that Spain has been very clear.
07:55 Spain and all its citizens who have voted have been crystal clear.
07:59 The vaguard, involutionist bloc that proposed a total repeal of all the progress we have
08:04 achieved during the last four years has failed.
08:06 It has failed.
08:10 Latin American presidents have expressed their opinions concerning the results of general
08:14 elections in Spain this past Sunday.
08:17 Colombian President Gustavo Pedro took to Twitter to express, "Way to go Spain.
08:23 Progressive forces are still on the fight."
08:24 Meanwhile, Argentinian President Alberto Fernández congratulated incumbent Pedro Sánchez from
08:30 the Spanish government or the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party and called him "dear friend".
08:35 Although the Socialist Party came in second with 122 seats, they have won two more parliament
08:44 seats than in the last elections, and through an alliance, they still have a chance to form
08:49 a new government.
08:57 And millions of users familiar with Twitter's bluebird will soon have to adapt to a simple
09:02 capital X, the letter with which the owner of the social network Elon Musk intends to
09:07 identify it.
09:09 This is what the tycoon said this Sunday on the platform, in a message he indicated that
09:14 they will soon say goodbye to the Twitter brand and little by little to all the little
09:19 birds.
09:20 This year, the millionaire South African businessperson with U.S. and Canadian nationality launched
09:26 an artificial intelligence company that he called XAI and then left him only with X.
09:32 The owner of an airspace company, a vehicle manufacturer, a laboratory that designs brain
09:38 ships and with plans to build a city in Texas, made the announcement of the change shortly
09:44 after the birth of threats.
09:46 The new meta social network seen as a rival to Twitter.
09:54 And now we will have a short break.
10:13 Stay with us.
10:37 Welcome back.
10:45 Ukraine insists on its own sloth against Crimea.
10:48 On Monday, the Russian Ministry of Defense confirmed that it neutralized 17 drone attacks.
10:54 The military report detailed that 14 Ukrainian drones were neutralized by the electronic
10:59 means.
11:00 11 others crashed into the Black Sea and three fell on the peninsular territory.
11:05 The attacks left no victims, no wounded.
11:08 Earlier, the mayor of Crimea, Sergei Asenov, reported that a drone had hit an ammunition
11:13 depot in Daskoyne district, damaging also a family residence in Kirovsky district.
11:24 In Russia, President Vladimir Putin and his Belarusian counterpart, Alexander Lukashenko,
11:29 met to discuss the Ukrainian conflict and Kiev's failed counteroffensive.
11:34 President Putin estimated that the irrecoverable losses of the Kiev forces since the beginning
11:39 of their counteroffensive already exceeded 26,000 people.
11:44 Likewise, the Belarusian president stated that there is no Ukrainian counteroffensive,
11:50 while the President Putin pointed out that there is a counteroffensive that failed.
12:01 In Indonesia, at least 15 people died and 19 more remain missing after a ferry sank
12:07 off the island of Sulawesi.
12:09 Local authorities reported that six people were rescued and taken to a health center,
12:14 while the bodies of 15 victims were handed over to their families.
12:18 The leader of the local search and rescue agency of the city of Kandari, Mohamed Arefah,
12:24 said that they are still looking for other 19 people.
12:27 According to the authorities, there were 40 passengers on board the ferry who were celebrating
12:33 the anniversary of their hometown when it sank off the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.
12:44 Israel's parliament on Monday moves ahead with a vote on Benjamin Netanyahu's proposed
12:49 judicial reform that seeks to restrict the influence of the Supreme Court.
12:54 During the legislative session, some opposition members said the judicial reform seeks to
12:58 undermine Israel's democratic system and that the proposal under discussion aims to remove
13:04 checks and balances on the executive, while the government argues that it needs to curb
13:08 judicial overreach.
13:11 Opposition leader Yair Lapid declared at the start of the debate that the law must be stopped
13:15 if Israeli society is to continue to live in a Jewish and democratic state.
13:20 The main aim of the judicial reform, according to Netanyahu's critics, is the search for
13:26 impunity.
13:27 While legislators met inside, protesters booed parliament, beat drums, blew horns, and chanted
13:33 "Shame" outside under a burning sun and mounted police tried to disperse them.
13:44 And in this context, police forces repress citizens in Israel who, for the first time
13:48 in the country's parliamentary history, took over the parliament's premises.
13:53 Those who oppose the judicial reforms that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the
13:57 Orthodox and extreme right-wing forces that support him are trying to impose were brutally
14:02 repressed around the Nasset, as the Israeli parliament is known.
14:06 The protest groups claimed to have done what they had never done before, taking the four
14:12 gates and blocking them, although they allowed the legislators to pass.
14:16 An hour later, the police cordon attacked those present who were expelled from the building.
14:28 And the Israeli occupying troops once again made illegal incursions into Palestinian territory.
14:33 In the new onslaught, 13 residents of the Nershams refugee camp were injured.
14:39 Around 60 military vehicles seized the West Bank city of Tul Karem and attacked the residents
14:44 of the refugee camp with live ammunition.
14:46 The Palestinian Health Ministry confirmed that four of the wounded were injured by bullets.
14:52 Others have been hit by shrapnel.
14:54 As is often the case, Israeli troops delayed the medical assistance of ambulances.
14:59 The causes of the new illegal incursion were not disclosed.
15:08 Nine people, including four soldiers, were killed on Sunday night when a civilian plane
15:12 crashed in Sudan for technical reasons, the military said.
15:16 The incident occurs as the war in that East African country entered its 100th day.
15:22 In Port Sudan, the military said a child survived the crash of an Antonov plane, in which nine
15:27 others were killed.
15:29 Port Sudan airport is the only airport still operating in the country due to the armed
15:33 conflict.
15:34 Since April 15, fighting between the army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the paramilitary
15:40 Rapid Support Forces led by Mohammed Hamdan Daglo has killed more than 3,900 people, according
15:47 to the latest balance sheet of the armed conflict location and events data project.
15:53 More than 2.2 million people have been internally displaced, mostly from Karthum, the international
15:58 organization for migration said in early July.
16:06 The fighting in Sudan has now been going on for 100 days, and the conflict has brought
16:11 a devastating human toll, reigniting ethnic violence and sparking fears it could destabilize
16:17 the wider region.
16:19 On April 15, a rivalry between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, the
16:24 RSF, exploded into war, turning Karthum and wider areas of the capital into a bloody battlefield.
16:31 Since then, fighting has also spread to the conflict-weary Darfur region, as well as parts
16:36 of Kordofan and Blue Nile states.
16:38 A flurry of diplomatic initiatives to halt the war has failed to yield any concrete results,
16:45 as the rival sides are locked into a battle for survival, one that both think they can
16:50 win outright without having to engage in meaningful negotiations.
16:54 Antelosur, the first Latin American and Caribbean multi-stage media company, is celebrating
17:18 its 18th anniversary, amplifying the voice and image of the people of Latin America,
17:23 the Caribbean and the world.
17:25 To face contemporary challenges, Telosur is taking on technological improvements and new
17:29 formats in its effort to amplify the stories that others prefer to keep quiet.
17:35 Details in the following report.
17:38 A dream come true, to tell the story of the South with its own voice.
17:43 The yearning of millions from Latin America and the Caribbean to be visible found in Telosur
17:48 the possibility of starring in stories that before would have been deliberately invisibilized
17:54 by the corporate media.
17:56 In these 18 years, Telosur has become a genuine expression of formerly invisible realities,
18:06 telling the stories of nobodies of our continent and around the world.
18:14 Realities that have been manipulated and hidden by the big media outlets.
18:21 Telosur began as a television channel on July 24, 2005, at the initiative of commanders
18:27 Hugo Chavez and Fidel Castro.
18:29 In tune with the challenges of the new times, it became an informative multimedia.
18:34 The fact that Telosur's channel is now 18 years old is basically the consolidation of
18:40 what was once the dream of Commander Chavez and that now allows us to be brothers and
18:46 sisters and to take that sense of brotherhood to different parts of the world, from Africa
18:52 to a good part of Europe.
18:54 And it is not just about broadcasting an idea, but all the cultural wealth that we have in
19:00 Latin America and the Caribbean.
19:02 And for that, without a doubt, Telosur has been a key piece.
19:06 With more than 20 correspondents and collaborators around the world, Telosur speaks the languages
19:12 of our region.
19:13 The public multi-state initiative with the greatest global impact in Latin America and
19:18 the Caribbean reaches Europe, the Middle East and Africa with its Spanish broadcasting service.
19:24 With its English broadcasting service, it reaches the English-speaking Caribbean and
19:28 Africa.
19:29 It also distributes content for social networks in Portuguese.
19:34 My wish is that we continue to move forward, to go deeper, to advance more, to unify our
19:39 work which is the most important thing.
19:41 And my wish is to continue to fulfill another 18 years of work.
19:47 In order to build its own communication agenda, this multimedia company maintains alliances,
19:53 cooperation agreements and collaborative journalism projects with media such as CGTN from China,
19:59 Russia Today, Isban TV from Iran, Al Majedin from Lebanon and the television of the BRICS.
20:06 It also provides high-quality content to broadcasters without production capacity for major global
20:11 events.
20:12 Telosur came to break some of that hegemony and it came to build democracy because when
20:19 there is more than one version of a news event, it helps to create in the listener, in the
20:27 viewer, a broader vision of the facts.
20:31 More than 600 workers of this multimedia company at its headquarters in Caracas, its production
20:38 centers in Havana, Mexico, Quito and in its offices around the world resisted during the
20:43 last five years the impact of coercive measures against the member states.
20:50 My wish is that we continue to grow as people, as professionals.
20:56 Telosur has been seen as an opportunity for many countries that have been invisible.
21:04 Telosur has opened those windows.
21:06 The challenge now is to move from resistant to creative growth in order to multiply the
21:11 informative strength of the multimedia with emphasis on innovation and journalistic quality
21:17 of its contents, formats and platforms.
21:22 Telosur has always been in a technological growth and let's say in terms of its expansion,
21:32 it is broadcasted around the world.
21:34 This is not a secret that has been permanent.
21:38 This new Telosur studio, Studio D, GW Studio, we have called it that.
21:44 It is a studio that will produce podcasts in this case.
21:48 Thus, day by day, Telosur makes history and tells it with a tune of diverse voices and
21:55 images from the global south.
21:57 And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
22:02 Remember, you can find this and many other stories on our website at telosureenglish.net.
22:07 And also, if you feel so inclined, please join us on social media for all the latest
22:12 news.
22:13 We are on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Telegram and TikTok.
22:17 For Telosur English, as always, I'm your anchor Gladys Quesada Cruz.
22:23 Thank you for watching.
