00:00In Venezuela, the Supreme Court of Justice unobjectively certified the results of the
00:16presidential election of July 28, presented by the National Electoral Council.
00:24In the United States, Kamala Harris officially accepted the Democratic Party's nomination
00:28for President of the United States, with a worrisome economic outlook behind her.
00:36And UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres warned that some Pacific islands face annihilation
00:42due to climate-induced cyclones, ocean waves and rising sea levels during his visit to
00:48Samoa.
00:54Hello and welcome to From the South.
00:56My name is Belen Villasantos, and from the Televisual Studios in Havana, Cuba, we begin
01:00with the news.
01:01In Venezuela, the Supreme Court of Justice unobjectively certified the results of the
01:06presidential election of July 28, presented by the National Electoral Council.
01:12Let's see the details.
01:16During a solemn session in the premises of the country's highest court, the President
01:20of the Supreme Court of Justice, Caricela Rodríguez, validated the results of the presidential
01:25elections, which granted victory to Nicolás Maduro Moros as re-elected President of Venezuela
01:31for the 2025-2031 term.
01:38I hereby certify in an unobjectionable matter the electoral material and validate the results
01:47of the presidential election of July 28, 2024, issued by the National Electoral Council
01:56in which Nicolás Maduro was elected as President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela for
02:04the constitutional period 2025-2031.
02:10It is so decided.
02:15In addition, the magistrate of the Supreme Court of Justice also stated that the expert
02:19analysis of the tally sheets coincided with the machines in the totalization room.
02:28Based on the results obtained in the expertise process, we can conclude that the bulletins
02:34issued by the National Electoral Council regarding the 2024 presidential election are supported
02:43by the tally sheets issued by each of the voting machines deployed in the electoral
02:48process, and, likewise, these tally sheets maintain full coincidence with the records
02:56of the databases of the national totalization centers.
03:02Consequently, the President of the Judiciary urged the National Electoral Council to publish
03:10the final results of the electoral process of last July 28 in accordance with the provisions
03:15of the electoral law.
03:21The National Electoral Council is urged to publish the final results of the electoral
03:26process held on July 28, 2024, for the election of the President of the Bolivarian Republic
03:32of Venezuela in the Electoral Gazette of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, as provided
03:38in Article 155 of the Organic Law of Electoral Processes.
03:46Likewise, the President of the Supreme Court of Justice informed that the former presidential
03:52candidate of the ultra-right, Edmundo González, did not comply with the call made by the Electoral
03:58Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice and did not submit the electoral material requested.
04:06But the former candidate Edmundo González Urrutia did not attend any of the phases of
04:12this process to which he was summoned, and therefore, he did not comply with the order
04:18of this, the highest instance of the contentious electoral jurisdiction of the Bolivarian Republic
04:24of Venezuela, nor with the consignment of the tally sheets, the list of witnesses, nor
04:31any electoral material.
04:33Consequently, he disregarded the mandate in frank and respect to the judicial authority.
04:43In this context, the Attorney General of Venezuela, Tarek William Saab, highlighted the importance
04:48of the work of the Supreme Court of Justice in the fulfillment of justice for the defense
04:53of democracy.
04:57The Electoral Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice has issued a truly transcendental
05:02and historical ruling for the country.
05:05I also consider as Attorney General of the Republic that the same is a mandatory compliance
05:10in all its parts.
05:12It validates the law of sorts issued by the only existing electoral power in the country,
05:18which is the National Electoral Council in the terms already known.
05:26For his part, the Foreign Affairs Minister of Venezuela, Iván Gil, demanded the international
05:31community to stop foreign interference in the internal affairs of the Venezuelan people.
05:38Today it is clear, the whole process is well written, how the details of the electoral
05:44process were carried out, the competences of the Supreme Court of Justice, its electoral
05:49chamber and the competences of the National Electoral Council, and it is very important
05:54for the world to know that in Venezuela the constitution of the Bolivarian Republic has
05:58triumphed, the rule of law has triumphed, its institutions have triumphed, and once
06:03again in Venezuela we demand respect, we demand non-interference in internal Venezuelan affairs,
06:09which as you have been able to see live and direct on television, are matters that have
06:15a solution within the framework of our constitution.
06:20With this final ruling, the Supreme Court of Justice ratified the victory of the re-elected
06:24President Nicolás Maduro in the election of July 28, after the campaign promoted by
06:30the extreme right-wing that sought to disregard the powers of the Venezuelan state and to
06:35implant an alleged matrix of fraud, while through social networks they incited fascist
06:39actions.
06:42In this context, the President Nicolás Maduro urged to maintain respect for the public powers
06:47after the Supreme Court of Justice ratified his victory in the presidential elections.
06:53During a meeting with the people of the state of La Guaira, the President congratulated
06:57the Supreme Court of Justice for its technical and legal work in the electoral legislation
07:03in defense of democracy.
07:05Likewise, the National Executive expressed that in view of the attempts to generate violence
07:10by the Venezuelan extreme right-wing and its U.S. allies, dialogue is the only way for
07:16peace to prevail.

07:54Welcome back from the South.
07:59In the United States, the current Vice President Kamala Harris formally accepted the candidacy
08:04for the Democratic Party for President of the country.
08:07Harris, who replaced Biden, accepted the nomination and pledged to take advantage of the precious
08:12opportunity the country has to leave bitterness and cynicism behind.
08:17Harris has been harshly criticized even by her supporters for the economic program on
08:23August 16th, further deepening concerns about the economy's performance in the democratic
08:28term.
08:29Gaza and immigration were the most reserved issues at the Democratic National Convention.
08:38The nation with this election has a precious, fleeting opportunity to move past the bitterness,
08:49cynicism and divisive battles of the past, a chance to chart a new way forward.
09:01Not as members of any one party or faction, but as Americans.
09:10And on Thursday, Donald Trump, the far-right candidate seeking his second term as the U.S.
09:15President, promised to approve the death penalty for undocumented immigrants for certain
09:20crimes.
09:21A few meters from the border of the country with Mexico and accompanied by the parents
09:26of a little girl allegedly murdered by two undocumented immigrants, the Republican criticized
09:32his Democrat contender Kamala Harris.
09:35Questioning her commitment to the nation, Trump assured that he would take care of the
09:40territory by promising capital punishment for undocumented foreigners who traffic drugs
09:46or are linked to drug trafficking and for those who commit lethal violence against children
09:52and state officials.
10:02And in other news, the National Human Rights Commission of Mexico ratified its support
10:06for the judicial reform.
10:08On the same day, the president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum, responded to the statements of
10:12the U.S. ambassador.
10:14The commission reaffirms that the proposal to transform them into the Ombudsman's office
10:19is a fundamental part of the strengthening of the defense and protection of guarantees.
10:24In this way, it replied to the National Action Party, which proposed to elect by popular
10:30vote.
10:31They consider the idea as opportunistic because since January 2023, the project was filed.
10:37On the other hand, Claudia Sheinbaum answered to the statements of the U.S. ambassador to
10:41Mexico, Ken Salazar, who asserted that the reform is a risk for Mexican democracy and
10:47reminded him that in his country judges are elected by the states and that Mexico is a
10:53sovereign country.
10:58And in Argentina, near midnight on Thursday, the office of the presidency officially communicated
11:04that the president, Javier Millet, will veto the retirement reform approved by the Senate.
11:09According to the statement, the libertarian head of state takes the decision due to the
11:13intention of the Senate to, quote-unquote, to destroy the government's economic program.
11:19He also described legislative exercise as an act of demagogic populism and added the
11:26particular accounts of the president, who is also an economist.
11:30On Thursday, with the overwhelming majority of 61 votes in favor and eight against, the
11:36upper house passed into law a pension reform, which, among other aspects, established a
11:42monthly update based on the latest available data of the Consumer Price Index.
12:00And solidarity with the Palestinian people was felt in Ecuador this Thursday.
12:14Hundreds of people raised their voices to demand a stop to the genocide that is being
12:18perpetrated by Israel.
12:20From Quito, our correspondent Elena Rodriguez with the details.
12:24A multitude walked through the central streets of the Ecuadorian capital in support of the
12:29Palestinian people.
12:35Ecuador stands in solidarity with Palestine.
12:38We also want to make this public denunciation of the genocide that has been going on for
12:43almost a year now, before the eyes of the whole world, that the peoples of the Global
12:47South are also with the Palestinian people and that their struggle is also our struggle.
12:53It is unjust and unacceptable that there is a genocide of such proportions that Israel
12:59should ignore international bodies and international treaties.
13:07Hundreds of people walked from Arbolito Park to the Israeli embassy to express their repudiation
13:13of what they described as genocide.
13:15This is genocide, it is ethnic cleansing, this is not war, they are not fighting against
13:21Hamas, they are exterminating the Palestinian people, it cannot be that the world is indifferent
13:26to this genocide.
13:33Ecuadorians in solidarity with Palestine denounced that there is a media siege that seeks to
13:37hide what is happening in Gaza.
13:39It is something we can no longer put up with, so much complicity, so much lukewarmness in
13:44media in general, because of the situation with Palestine.
13:49They also described the president of Ecuador, Daniel Novoa, as an accomplice of the tragedy
13:53that is affecting the people of that part of the world.
13:59The government is not interested and we are very disappointed.
14:03The Ecuador-Palestine Unitary Solidarity Committee announced that, at the Latin American level,
14:07mobilizations are being prepared in rejection of the crimes committed by the Israeli occupiers
14:12on the one-year anniversary of the siege.
14:18The Palestinian government is not interested and we are very ashamed, very embarrassed,
14:23that the Novoa government is in favor of this genocide.
14:26crimes committed by the Israeli occupiers on the one-year anniversary of the siege.

15:26Welcome back from the South.
15:30UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that some Pacific islands face annihilation
15:36due to climate-induced cyclones, ocean waves and rising sea levels during his visit to
15:41Samoa.
15:42He emphasized the urgent need to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial
15:48levels, a target agreed upon by nearly 200 nations in the June 2015 Paris Agreement.
15:55Guterres highlighted that the Pacific contributes only 0.02% of global carbon emissions, but
16:02suffers disproportionately from climate impacts.
16:05He urged wealthier nations to fulfill their financial commitments to developing countries
16:09and called for international action against climate change, overfishing and plastic pollution.
16:16He asserted that the Pacific should be managed by its islanders and not become a site for
16:21geopolitical competition.
16:26During my visit, I've spent time with communities threatened by the rising ocean.
16:34High rising sea levels pose an enormous threat to Samoa, to the Pacific and to other small
16:41island developing states.
16:44And these challenges demand resolute international action.
16:50The climate crisis is the gravest threat facing this country and this region and quite
16:56possibly the world.
16:58This region, the Pacific, contributes 0.02% of global emissions.
17:06Yet, you are on the front lines of the climate crisis, dealing with extreme weather events
17:13from raging tropical cyclones to record ocean heat waves.
17:19Sea levels are rising even faster than the global average, posing an existential threat
17:25to millions of Pacific islanders.
17:39And now we move on to other topics.
17:41One of the most performed classics by black companies in the world is Tussauds.
17:46Now, the most performed by the prima ballerina absoluta of the Cuban, Alicia Alonso.
17:51Let's see.
17:56Giselle is the absolute masterpiece of the dance theater of romanticism.
18:01It was premiered in 1841 at the Opera of Paris, becoming a fundamental work of the classical dance.
18:10The story centers on a beautiful, pure and innocent young woman who falls in love with Albrecht.
18:16Who is a nobleman already engaged to be married and who, in order to win her,
18:20pretends to be a simple villager.
18:22Hilarion, who for his part, is deeply in love with Giselle, suspect the deception and unmask it.
18:29Giselle's innocence is shattered, driving her to madness and death.
18:34The argument was based on an idea of Theophile Gauthier, French poet, critic and novelist,
18:48a faithful defender of the romantic movement.
18:51In a book by Heinrich Heine entitled From Germany, Gauthier reads about the white whitties,
18:56who, according to him, are figures dancing mercilessly in the moon-softened midst of Germany.
19:02From this idea, the author began to create the ballet.
19:05But when he did not advance in its development, he turned to Jules-Henri Bernoy, French dramatist.
19:17One of the top roles of romantic ballet in the romantic category,
19:20it has known interpretations that have celebrated the great prima donnas and prima ballerinas of the 20th century.
19:27Among them are the Russians Olga Sprezisdeva, Anna Pavlova, Olga Preobradskaya, Tamara Karzabina,
19:35the Italian Carla Fracci and the Cuban Alicia Alonso.
19:44And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
