00:00 In Argentina, demonstrations continue against the constitutional reform and repression promoted
00:13 by Jujuy Governor Gerardo Morales.
00:18 In Thailand, the Constitutional Court suspended leading Prime Minister candidate and winner
00:23 of May's nationwide elections, Pita Limjaroenrat, from being a lawmaker.
00:31 And in Kenya, protesters and police violently clashed as three days of demonstrations against
00:35 the cost of living and tax hikes kicked off.
00:45 Hello welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Metellus Studios in Havana,
00:49 Cuba.
00:50 We begin with the news.
00:52 On Tuesday in Argentina's northwestern province of Jujuy, demonstrations continue against
00:56 the constitutional reform and the repression promoted by Governor Gerardo Morales.
01:01 The mobilization, called by the inter-union of teachers, state and municipal unions, gathered
01:06 with churches in the capital of Jujuy, with the slogan "Up with Rights, Down with Reform."
01:12 Their main points focused on wage increases and the repeal of the constitutional reform.
01:17 Protesters claim that the reform endorses the plundering of lithium and criminalizes
01:21 social protest.
01:22 They have also demanded the release of all those arbitrarily detained in the demonstrations.
01:32 In Belgium, the third Syllaki European Union summit closed without consensus in which the
01:36 heads of states of Latin America and the Caribbean demanded reciprocity and elimination of colonialist
01:41 pressures towards the region.
01:43 During the closing ceremony, the need to stop the interference of other countries towards
01:46 the region was stressed, in addition to the United States' blockade against Cuba.
01:51 Latin American leaders disagreed with European policies towards the region while expressing
01:55 their neutral position on the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
01:58 The heads of states also rejected attempts to link the Latin American region to the NATO
02:03 bloc against Russia, backing the principle of Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone
02:07 of peace adopted at the second Syllaki summit held in Havana.
02:16 Also in Belgium, social organizations and leaders of Latin America and the Caribbean
02:19 and Europe attended the closing event of the People's Summit, which ran parallel to the
02:23 Syllaki European Union Summit.
02:26 Several Latin American and European leaders spoke at the closing event, speaking in favor
02:30 of the creation of a new multipolar world.
02:33 The summit had previously issued a nine-point final declaration stating that at a time when
02:37 the U.S. would like to have the world divided into state blocs disconnected and confronted
02:41 with each other, the Syllaki European Union Summit provided a forum to advance relations
02:46 in search of a peaceful world that is also capable of respecting Mother Nature.
02:51 Furthermore, the declaration strongly rejected any political or military action aimed at
02:55 interfering with the institutions and constitutional norms of any of the states participating in
03:01 the summit and condemned media campaigns geared at destabilizing democratically elected governments
03:05 in Latin America and the Caribbean.
03:12 The President of Colombia, Gustavo Pedro, spoke about the importance of integrated countries
03:17 of both Latin America and the European regions and that history must not be repeated.
03:30 Yesterday we said that history does not repeat, but in order to do that we need to take into
03:40 account past events in order to prevent these events from happening again.
03:52 We talked about the role of the countries in Latin America and the European Union and
04:03 the need for the Latin American countries to stay united.
04:11 That is something that we need to do.
04:13 We have talked thoroughly about this topic, but we need to take action in order for it
04:19 to happen.
04:27 Venezuelan Foreign Minister Ivan Gil denounced the application of sanctions as a brutal practice
04:32 that violates human rights in order to bend the will of the people.
04:39 The European Union that defends human rights so much applies over Venezuela a brutal practice
04:45 to bend the will of the people and applies it with much more severity.
04:51 It must also be said that the United States, when it attacks and confiscates our goods,
04:57 when it confiscates us and eliminates any possibility of negotiation with our goods,
05:03 it steals those goods.
05:06 For his part, the President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, gave an assessment of the
05:10 CELAC European Union Summit in Brussels on Tuesday.
05:13 He stated that the Vice President spoke the truth that the country faces in the summit.
05:18 A real Venezuela, a Venezuela that is growing, working.
05:24 The vast majority of this country wants nothing to do with that extremist right wing, with
05:30 what Guaidó meant, with all those people who are unpatriotic, who deny Venezuela.
05:35 Our Vice President took our truth to the summit of the European Union and CELAC, held bilateral
05:41 meetings in groups and gave public speech and a statement so that Europe definitely
05:46 understands that Venezuela does not want to go back to the times of interventionism, of
05:51 colonialism and that we want respect because with respect everything is possible.
05:57 They must respect the social, economic and political life.
06:01 They must lift the sanctions they have on our country because they are unjustified and
06:06 moral, illegal and also criminal.
06:08 They should lift them definitely and without conditions.
06:12 We want Venezuelans do not accept anyone conditioning the internal life of the country.
06:17 The sanctions should be lifted so that we can open the floodgates, the cooperation relations.
06:24 Europe investors want to come to Venezuela and they are welcome to invest in oil, gas,
06:29 petrochemicals, agriculture, tourism and industry.
06:33 European investors are welcome.
06:35 With respect, everything is possible.
06:39 President Nicolás Maduro also said that years have demonstrated that the Venezuelan people
06:43 is the real power of the nation and that sanctions against the country must be lifted.
06:51 It is a fact.
06:52 We want to turn the page.
06:53 It is a fact that they were wrong all the way when they tried to impose on us a president
06:58 that nobody has elected, the cheater and thief Guaidó.
07:02 Years went by and it was shown who has the real president of Venezuela, who is the real
07:07 public power of Venezuela, which is the Venezuelan society.
07:11 We resisted.
07:12 They are slow.
07:13 They are attacked.
07:14 Now we want to turn the page and hopefully start writing a new story between Europe and
07:19 Venezuela.
07:21 Hopefully it is on their side.
07:22 We want to.
07:23 Now it is on their side.
07:27 Well, that there must be dialogue and respect, that Venezuela will continue its social and
07:34 political process.
07:35 At the dialogue table there was a consensus, I can tell you, here between the two of us.
07:40 There was a consensus that sanctions against Venezuela must be lifted.
07:44 Well, that consensus must be complied with.

08:48 Nicaraguan Vice President Rosario Murillo reported that the quake was strong and she
08:52 urged people to be careful, to clear roads and to give priority to people with disabilities,
08:57 children and the elderly.
08:58 She recalled that Nicaraguan people have been preparing for events such as this and that
09:02 all measures must be taken to ensure that what has been learned to protect life is applied.
09:08 Authorities have not yet reported any casualties or material damage.
09:11 Users of social medias report that electricity and telephone networks have been cut in some
09:16 areas.
09:23 In Colombia, 20 people have died and more than 14 are still missing after a landslide
09:27 in the Catame sector in the department of Cundinamarca.
09:31 Local media reported that the incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning as a
09:34 result of heavy rains.
09:36 Local authorities also said that rescuers had found six people alive and were continuing
09:40 the search for the missing, including several minors.
09:43 In this context, following the heavy rains, several houses in the sector were affected,
09:47 leaving an unspecified number of people affected.
09:51 The landslide occurred near a toll station about 60 kilometers from the capital, Bogota,
09:56 and destroyed a road bridge.
10:03 According to the World Meteorological Organization, the number of simultaneous heat waves in the
10:07 Northern Hemisphere has increased sixfold since the 1980s, and the trend shows no signs
10:13 of abiding.
10:14 The organization's warning comes at a time when several areas in the Northern Hemisphere
10:19 experience sweltering temperatures.
10:21 Local authorities issue heat alerts in the United States, Europe, and Asia, and remind
10:26 people to hydrate and protect themselves from the sun.
10:30 According to experts, Europe is the fastest-warming continent in the world.
10:34 In addition to threatening the health of the population, high temperatures contribute to
10:37 the generation of fires.
10:39 They even said that the increase in extreme weather events underlines the growing urgency
10:43 of reducing greenhouse emissions.
10:50 In Greece, forest fires were reported due to the heat wave sweep in the European region.
10:55 According to authorities, the flames caused the displacement of people, while at least
10:58 20 cities were declared on road alert.
11:01 Officials urged the population to take the necessary measures as they foresee that the
11:05 fires could increase.
11:07 In this context, the high temperature numbers could surpass continental records of at least
11:12 48.8 degrees Celsius.
11:19 At the same time, in the Swiss Alps, a heavy fire broke out in a forest above the village
11:24 of Bic in the south of the country.
11:27 Around 150 firefighters arrived on the scene to fight the fire with civilian and military
11:32 helicopters, in addition to evacuating more than 200 inhabitants from the area.
11:37 Local authorities reported no injuries to people or animals, as well as damage to structures,
11:43 while local police opened an investigation to determine the causes of the fire.
11:52 A fire at an industrial site in Crimea, Russia, has caused the evacuation and paralyzation
11:57 of a highway.
11:59 The head of the Russian Republic, Sergei Aspchenov, informed that the Tavrida highway is blocked
12:06 because of the fire in the Krivovsky district.
12:09 He added that about 2,000 people in the area adjacent to the fire are being evacuated for
12:13 safety.
12:14 The operational center and all services are working at the site.
12:18 The causes of the fire have not been yet clarified.
12:25 Russia has replied to UN Secretary General António Guterres, reminding him that they
12:30 have 90 days to normalize agricultural exports.
12:33 According to the Memorandum of Understanding on the Crimean Agreement, also signed by the
12:37 UN, in the event of termination, the agency has 90 days to continue its normalization
12:41 work.
12:42 The foreign ministry adds that it was just such a period of time that Guterres envisaged
12:50 to restore access to the swift system of an affiliated structure of the Russian Agricultural
12:55 Bank.
12:56 Moscow has reacted to the concern expressed by the UN Secretary, but clarified that it
13:00 does not trust the palliative measures because the organization lacks influence in Washington
13:05 and Brussels.
13:10 On Wednesday, China's top foreign policy official Wang Yi met with former US Secretary
13:15 of State Henry Kissinger in Beijing, where some media claimed that it was a surprise
13:19 visit.
13:20 Before the meeting, with the director of the office of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission
13:24 of the Communist Party, the former diplomat met with the Minister of Defense, Li Xiangfu.
13:29 The final declaration of the meeting emphasizes that the peoples of all countries hope that
13:33 both nations can assume their responsibilities and jointly ensure global prosperity and stability.
13:39 The State Department informed that Kissinger is in China as a private citizen.
13:46 Thailand's constitutional court suspended leading prime ministerial candidate and winner
13:53 of mainstream nationwide elections, Peta Limcharoenrat, from being a lawmaker.
13:58 The move is the latest setback for Peta's hugely popular progressive opposition party,
14:02 following nearly a decade of turbulent military-backed rule.
14:06 The temporary suspension follows a complaint filed by the Election Commission against the
14:11 Move Forward Party, later accusing him of violating election laws for allegedly holding
14:17 shares in a media company.
14:19 Peta has denied he broke election rules and previously accused the Election Commission
14:22 of rushing the case to court.
14:25 Move Forward Party pledged deep structural reforms, from changes to the military to the
14:29 previously untouchable monarchy.
14:32 The May election, which saw a record turnout, delivered a powerful rebuke to the military-backed
14:36 establishment that has ruled Thailand since 2014.

15:23 In Kenya, protests and police clashed on Wednesday morning as three days of demonstrations against
15:28 the cost of living and tax hikes kicked off.
15:31 Demonstrations take place in the country's capital, Nairobi, and other cities such as
15:34 Kibera, Mathare, Huha, and Kayole.
15:37 Crime police use tear gas and, in some cases, live ammunition to disperse protesters.
15:41 The government ordered the closure of schools in Nairobi and two other cities as it attempts
15:46 to ban opposition leaders riled out in a rally.
15:49 Wednesday's demonstrations rejected the killing of nine people a week ago amid mobilizations
15:54 against the finance bill signed by President William Ruto.
16:02 In South Africa, representatives from global political parties participated in a dialogue
16:06 forum in the South African city of Ekuru, Lenin, a month ahead of the BRICS summit,
16:11 which will be hosted in Johannesburg.
16:13 Under the theme BRICS and Africa Partnership for Mutually Accelerated Growth, Sustainable
16:18 Development and Inclusive Growth, more than 54 political parties from around the world
16:22 are participating in the forum.
16:24 According to the African National Congress, the themes of the dialogue focus on global
16:28 peace and security, inclusive multilateralism, strengthening the BRICS, and expanding their
16:33 membership association to mutually accelerated growth and sustainable development.
16:42 We are for the silencing of the guns in Ukraine.
16:48 The achievement of genuine peace and a peaceful coexistence between Russia, Ukraine, and the
16:56 neighbourhood.
16:58 We are fully behind the African Peace Initiative led by President Cyril Ramaphosa and the seven
17:06 other African heads of state and government to find a peaceful solution to the conflict
17:14 by initiating dialogue between President Vladimir Putin and President Zelensky.
17:24 We do not want the war.
17:26 However, those who actually stand behind Zelensky's regime, the USA and Western countries, do
17:35 not want peace.
17:36 They are doing everything to derail negotiations.
17:40 We are grateful to the peoples of the world from all continents that they do not support
17:48 illegal and criminal policy of sanctions against Russia.
17:53 Chadian leader General Mahamat Aydizdebi-Idna has pardoned 110 more people sentenced to
17:58 jail terms following deadly protests against the regime last October.
18:02 Demonstrations against the extension of the transition of rule broke out last October
18:07 in the capital, Yemen and several other towns.
18:10 Debi was proclaimed head of state by the army in April 2021.
18:13 After the death of his father, Aydizdebi-Idna, who was killed during anti-revolutionary operations
18:19 after ruling for 30 years.
18:21 More than 600 young men, including at least 80 minors, were arrested in Deh Jemena on
18:26 October 20 and in the following days and then sent to a prison in the desert town of Koro
18:31 Toro.
18:32 After a month of detention, they were tried without legal representation and more than
18:35 half were sentenced to prison terms.
18:37 Now total 436 people convicted of taking part in last October's protests have now been pardoned
18:44 by Chadian authorities in less than four months.
18:50 On Tuesday, Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida visited gas-rich Qatar to wrap up a Gulf tour
18:55 centered on energy security and cooperation with Tokyo's main suppliers.
19:00 The premier arrived in Qatar from the United Arab Emirates after starting his tour in Saudi
19:04 Arabia, where he met the de facto leader of the Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman.
19:09 During his tour, Kishida and Gulf leaders discussed how to deal with energy challenges
19:14 in the face of unstable supply due to Russia's special military operation in Ukraine.
19:19 Japan relied almost entirely on imports for its crude oil, with Saudi Arabia, the United
19:23 Arab Emirates and Qatar accounting for the bulk of its supplies.
19:27 Prime Minister Kishida was making the first visit to Doha by a Japanese premier in 10
19:33 years.
19:34 Moreover, all three countries I visited have a strong willingness to transition away from
19:42 their current economies, which heavily rely on exports from more than half of their national
19:48 revenue.
19:49 Their aim to transform into exporters of decarbonized energy and diversify their economies and industries
19:55 by liberating their respective strands of Gulf states and Japan.
20:00 Through this collaboration, the Middle East oil-producing nations can be transformed into
20:05 a global green energy hub, exporting decarbonized energy and critical minerals.
