00:21The boardroom
00:22You can go through to the boardroom now
00:42Good morning
01:10Welcome into this boardroom
01:13Now a lot of people ask me, what would I be doing at your age?
01:18Where would I be?
01:19I tell you where I'd be, I'd be that side of the table
01:23This is a great opportunity for you
01:27This is not about a job anymore
01:29And just to be perfectly clear about this, I'm not looking for a friend
01:33If I want a friend, I'll get a dog
01:36I'm looking for a partner
01:38The Marks to my Spencer
01:41The Lennon to my McCartney
01:43This is about me investing £250,000 into a business with one of you
01:50And I'm expecting you, as the so-called entrepreneurs, to make the money for me
01:55So in a way, you're lucky
01:58You're lucky I'm not over that side of the table
02:00Because I tell you what, I'd win
02:05Now I've had a look at some of your business ideas
02:08And so here's the point
02:11Business ideas that I'm not interested in would have been thrown out a long time ago
02:15You're here because I'm interested
02:18You claim to be entrepreneurs
02:20Many of you are in business already
02:22But I need you to stand up and show me what you lot are made of
02:29So I think we'll get down to business now
02:37So let me tell you about the first task
02:40It is like starting from a blank sheet of paper
02:47I want you to start your own print business
02:51I'm going to ask you to go out and buy blank material
02:55It could be t-shirts, it could be mugs, it could be mouse mats
02:59And then you're going to have to brand up those items and sell them to the public
03:05The team that has made the biggest amount of profit wins
03:09And the team that hasn't will lose
03:11And in that team, one of you will be fired
03:15I will be starting this off with girls versus boys
03:21Nick will be following the girls
03:23Karen will be following the boys
03:26Don't underestimate them as ever
03:28They are my eyes and ears
03:30There's not much that they will miss
03:33Now some of you may come here with preconceived plans of how you're going to play this thing out
03:40Let me give you a warning
03:42Don't try and hide
03:44Because, you know, we're not playing Where's Wally here
03:47I'm not looking for Lord Lucan
03:50I'm looking for somebody who's going to put themselves forward and show me
03:54That they have got the aggression, the mouse and the business acumen to be my partner
04:01Is everything clear?
04:02Yes
04:04You look like you're sweating over there
04:06You're not nervous, are you?
04:07No, not at all
04:10Sure?
04:10Yeah
04:12Right, I'll see you back in the ballroom here in a couple of days' time
04:22Today, teams must print onto products
04:25Tomorrow, sell them on the streets
04:28Boys, I'm Tom
04:29Nice to meet you, Tom
04:30I'm Adam
04:31Hiya, I'm Maria
04:32Hi, I'm Jean
04:33Nice to meet you
04:33I'm Katie
04:35That was mad in the ballroom, wasn't it, that?
04:36It was such an experience
04:39But before battle begins, time to big up their backgrounds
04:43What do you do?
04:43I've got my own bridal boutique
04:45Nice
04:46Wow
04:47What about you, bud?
04:47I run a fine wine company
04:49So you're a good man
04:50I'm in risk management for a financial firm
04:52You could be the figure girl
04:53Do all the figures
04:55That's my refund
04:56I got myself from a communist block of flats in Bulgaria
04:59To the top of a skyscraper at the heart of the financial city of London
05:03I'm shrewd, adaptable, and have that raw business potential
05:07I founded and run two businesses, a coffee business and a technology business
05:10Coffee?
05:11Yeah
05:12Sales, basically, is what I do
05:14Enthusiasm is a huge asset of mine
05:16And I believe it's caught and not taught
05:19And I do believe business is actually very, very simple
05:22And it is made complicated by idiots
05:25I've managed pubs and restaurants, done that since I was like 15, so
05:29I'm a great businesswoman
05:31You'll never find anyone like me
05:33I think I'm a bit like Marmite
05:34You're either going to love me or you're going to hate me, you know?
05:36It's going to be one of the two
05:37What about you, Ricky?
05:38I work in the recruitment industry
05:39So I'm a recruitment manager for the scientific sectors
05:42By day, I'm a business superstar
05:44And by night, I'm also a professional wrestler
05:47So when I'm in a group with men, I am the alpha male of that group
05:50I'll try not to annoy her, obviously
05:52I think Lord Sugar saw the potential in me, just sat opposite the desk
05:54He felt that charisma coming from me
06:01Waiting in London's Bayswater, a four-storey townhouse
06:07For the next 12 weeks, it'll be office and home
06:11Oh my God!
06:12This is the kitchen!
06:14Oh, wow!
06:15Hey!
06:17Beautiful, eh?
06:18It's nice, yeah
06:20Is that for me?
06:21No way!
06:22Yeah?
06:23I'm Ricky
06:24Nice to meet you, the wrestler
06:25Nice to meet you, I'm Rick
06:27It's never-ending, this, isn't it?
06:29Big enough to fit all our egos in it, that's for sure
06:33Before they begin, both teams need names
06:39I was thinking Phoenix
06:40Obviously, if we have some troubles in the next few weeks
06:42We're going to have to rise from the ashes, rise from the flames
06:44So that's going to be my choice
06:45I think Phoenix is a great name
06:47Phoenix
06:48Phoenix it is, guys
06:49Team Phoenix
06:50High-fives, high-fives, high-fives
06:54Something came to me, a bit random, in my dream last night
07:00Sterling
07:03I think it symbolises that we're strong, we're making money
07:05That's what it's about
07:08It's just a strong word, isn't it?
07:10Yeah
07:11It really says what we are
07:12Right, Sterling
07:13I'm right for Sterling
07:14OK, happy to go
07:15Sorted
07:16Next job, pick leaders
07:19Is there anyone that wants to be the project manager?
07:24Anyone screaming out?
07:27I don't want to be project manager
07:28Because I'd be best used selling on the start
07:31That's where I'll shine
07:34Guys, this is shocking, I know, typically
07:35We're going in to win
07:36In terms of going in to win, I think we can win the task, guys
07:38So, I mean, is anybody at this stage willing to put themselves forward?
07:44I'll put myself forward if nobody wants to do it
07:46I don't really want to do the first week's task, but I will do it
07:50Congratulations
07:51Well done, yeah
07:52Nice one
07:53I really didn't want to be the team leader last week
07:55100% support from the rest of the team, yeah
07:58OK
07:59Running the boys, technology entrepreneur Nick
08:02My mind does work a bit like a computer
08:04I rank almost everything in my life, a bit like an Excel spreadsheet
08:07I think business is all about logic
08:10And I can think of solutions to complex problems quicker than other people can
08:13Let's go, start with the project manager
08:16For the girls, a volunteer
08:18I would like to put myself up as project manager
08:20Gabrielle
08:22I'm an architect
08:23I also literally just opened up my new print and design store
08:30Is there anybody else that has anything to compete with that?
08:33Does anybody else have any experience?
08:35I'm happy for you to do it
08:36OK, great, great
08:38I'm not the usual kind of candidate
08:40I'm kind of a bit quirky
08:42And being an architect, I'm very creative
08:45I love to look at things differently
08:48And use my creativity to make them a success
08:51OK, so let's go
08:52Both teams have catalogues of unbranded products
08:56Then in here we've got phone covers
08:59Fridge magnets
09:00No, little T-shirts
09:02Yeah, yeah
09:03So T-shirts are number one
09:05I think a bag with a nice design
09:06I think a bag's a shout
09:08I think the teddy's a good idea
09:09No, actually, I quite like the idea of a teddy bear
09:11Small bears or big bears?
09:12Small bears, small bears
09:14Big bears are going to stand out more, aren't they?
09:15I think you should go for the smaller bears
09:16Just go with the larger bears
09:17Yeah, yeah, save money up front
09:19I'm making a decision, big bears
09:22We need to work out the cost price of the material
09:24Then how much it costs to print it
09:25And then how much we reckon we can sell it for
09:26Let's work out the margin
09:27To add value, all the products need printable designs
09:31We haven't really discussed what the design will be though, have we?
09:33Guys, the design comes second, just the products at the moment
09:37I think the design and the brands are all quite important
09:39So maybe it could be just something different, something a bit, you know
09:43A bit zany, a bit funky
09:45First of all, just work out the margin
09:47It's about the margin
09:48Ladies, ladies, ladies
09:49You want to really stand out
09:50You want to be like, this is the T-shirt for you
09:53Should we hold on a second?
09:54How much is this going to cost us?
09:56At the end of the day, it's about making the margin
10:00Felix! Felix!
10:03Midday
10:07Both teams split
10:10Half to buy at a warehouse
10:13And half to a print studio
10:17For the screen printing of the T-shirts
10:19We're looking at maybe three animals
10:21A monkey, a lion and a penguin
10:23Targeting families, the girls' design team has an idea for kids
10:27We're looking quite obvious, cartoon style
10:30Penguin is really easy to draw
10:33Just like that, face over there, feet on the side
10:37Sketching the designs, business development manager Jade
10:42I would describe myself really as a salesperson
10:45But I have a real creative edge
10:48Oh, I actually quite like it
10:49I think it's lovely
10:51The screen prints are actually going to be all of the drawings I drew
10:54I think it looks good, the team thinks it looks nice
10:56It's our kind of little animal family, I'd say
11:01Looks like it's drawn by kids for kids
11:03Oh, I'm quite good at doing kids' stories
11:08North London
11:10A warehouse packed with unbranded products
11:15Don't spend more than £200 on bags
11:17Yeah, no problem at all
11:21The boys, shopping for blank items on a tight budget
11:25I can give you 100 bags for £100
11:28That's the best I can do
11:29That's fine, OK, all right
11:33Next, the girls
11:36On the lookout for kids' products
11:38You have a T-shirt, a baby grow and bibs
11:44But with no numbers to go on
11:47How many?
11:48I was thinking if we do 90 T-shirts, that's right
11:50No, 80 T-shirts and 30 bibs
11:53Look, Gabrielle is the team leader
11:55So I think she needs to be in on the decision
11:58Hi, how are you?
12:00We're slightly unsure exactly what we can buy
12:03Do you want to do 80 T-shirts or 90 T-shirts and 30 bibs?
12:08We're literally with a designer right now
12:09So what would you like us to do?
12:13It's really, really important
12:14because otherwise we're going to be over budget
12:16As soon as I find out, I'm bringing you straight back
12:19Is that fine?
12:21We're just going to have to make a decision then
12:23Yeah, it's fine, I'm in agreement with that
12:25Let's go with that
12:29£280, please
12:32Bought blank for printing
12:34Toddler T-shirts, bags and bibs
12:37I think Gabrielle is just losing control
12:39There's a lot of things that have been brushed over
12:42because she's a creative person
12:44She's an architect, she can draw
12:45That's it, she can draw buildings
12:484pm
12:51At the boys' design studio
12:5415 at 50p, £7.50
12:57Figures are still the focus
13:00Hello, guys
13:01Hello, guys
13:01We just wanted to clarify, what does the logo say?
13:03Is it a name or is it a design? What is it?
13:05We haven't come up with the idea yet
13:07We're still trying to get those numbers together
13:09Cheers, mate
13:10They haven't done it, they've been there all day
13:11And they've got a time constraint to that as well
13:13They've been there all day
13:16With the clock ticking
13:18Right, guys, so we've got half an hour
13:19We need to do this really quickly, I think
13:21And tourists the target
13:23They wheel out the old favourites
13:26This might be either a bus or a taxi
13:27What I would do is very simply
13:29This is A and then the picture of a London bus
13:32What about is this A?
13:34This is A, you've got it down
13:36I won't overcomplicate it
13:38The boys have thought about the cost of the printing
13:40Plus the margin
13:41And they've kept the design really simple
13:43But what's different about this?
13:44Nothing is different about it
13:46Guys, what about that?
13:47Phone box
13:48Or not even no text, just a phone box
13:50The phone box, the red London bus
13:53Come on, there's got to be more imagination involved in this process
13:59Is everyone happy?
14:00Fantastic
14:02The buying boys are back
14:04We've gone for a Union Jack on the T-shirt for the teddy
14:07And on the banks, we've gone for a big London bus with a logo
14:11So we've really thought out of the box, yeah?
14:15Both teams have till midnight to print their products
14:19If we get all the teddies, we've got a lot of teddies to do
14:26Little man's job, this one, isn't it?
14:28Once designs are transferred to screens, printing can start
14:32That's how it should look
14:33Yeah
14:35Yeah, I'm happy with that
14:36Van Gogh, eat your heart out
14:37Let's do it
14:38That's what I say
14:43Isn't that clever?
14:4439 to go
14:47Gabrielle's girls get cracking
14:49On a range of kids' clothes, bags and jigsaws
14:59Oh, my God
15:01Yeah, so it's literally just like that
15:04Gabrielle put herself up as project manager
15:06because she's in the print business
15:08And now her expertise is beginning to show
15:12Good, good stuff
15:13But the one that's disappointing me is Katie
15:16She's keeping very quiet
15:18Ladies, is everyone working?
15:21So she'd better start getting involved
15:23or they'll sense weakness and turn on her
15:26Where is she?
15:27Katie, Katie
15:30I'm just getting really annoyed cos we are doing everything...
15:36If you're waiting, can you start packing?
15:39I'm not waiting, I'm putting this stuff in
15:41It's just it takes as long as it takes
15:45As products pile up, still no plan how to claw back profits
15:5140 bids, 0.10 and this is just not the best time to be doing sums
15:56Anybody in business knows that your margin and your pricing is key
16:01If we lose for the sake of, say, £10, it's down to her
16:07Plus the £50, are you sure you added in that £50?
16:10Yeah, a bit
16:11Right, OK, we need to work out what we're going to charge people
16:16The boys' studio
16:19Freshly printed, patriotic bears
16:22Lovely, looking good?
16:24Yeah, I like it, yeah
16:26Waiting for red buses
16:28Ruined it
16:32I can't work out what we're doing wrong
16:34Not enough paint that time
16:43Put it in!
16:44Show it to a gullible tourist
16:45Yeah
16:49The printing on the bags is being a little bit more difficult than we first envisaged
16:53Because it's not a machine, we are doing it by hand
16:55So some of the quality is different for each one
16:59So at the moment that's a little bit of a concern
17:01Because are we going to be able to sell them at full price?
17:03Oh man, that's knackered now
17:04There's no point wasting it, might as well print on it
17:09What can we do with that?
17:12Ah, there you go
17:21Midnight
17:23If it was me heading up the graphics design I think I would have done a bit more
17:28This is a bus
17:29I think it's terrible, but it's done now
17:41Today, teams must sell their printed products to the public
17:45Here come the dream team
17:46Setting up stall on London's South Bank, the boys
17:51On the back you've got 10 and 11, so that one's wrong
17:59That actually there
18:05Next, a pep talk from project manager Nick
18:08Right, try and hit £325 each of sales today
18:12We're going to make the most profit if we sell the teddies at £15
18:15That's where the real massive margin is going to be
18:17Guys, just before we move on, this is purely from my experience
18:20I'm based heavily in sales myself
18:21Chipping in, sales manager Stephen
18:25I've asked 20 of my friends right now
18:27Right now, would they buy a bear for £15?
18:30I'm struggling to pick any of them, that bear would they buy at £15?
18:33That's the situation, so I'm saying right now
18:35I would as a group come to a lower price than that right now
18:38if I was to give my input straight away
18:40Stephen stood right next to the team leader, he took control of the meeting
18:43I think if I was project manager, I wouldn't have had that
18:46I think Nick was doing a grand job
18:47Why Stephen stepped up, I don't know
18:50In terms of starting point, we're agreed on £12, yeah?
18:52No, no, I've made a decision, for now
18:54We're sticking with the price we originally said, yeah
18:56£15 for there
19:00Briefing over, half the boys hit the streets
19:03Guys, the bottom line is now we've got to shift this, haven't we?
19:05Of course we have
19:07Greenwich Market
19:11Fixed pitch for the girls' boutique baby store
19:14London Zoo
19:18To push up prices, the girls plan to print children's names on t-shirts
19:24These are literally all the boxes that you're taking
19:27And take half their stock to London Zoo
19:31What we're thinking really quickly is, let's put deer at the zoo on them
19:34What do you think of that?
19:35I think I loved my day out at the zoo, we'll really sell
19:38Love that idea
19:39Let's not waste time because it's quite far away
19:44The later we take, the more traffic we're going to encounter
19:47I completely agree, but we just need to see how we go
19:50And we can decide to leave if it's taking too long
19:55It's pissing me off, why are the other teams still here?
19:57They should be gone
20:02You are wasting time, I know how to do this
20:05The decision was to take them, I love London Zoo there
20:08That was Gabrielle's decision
20:10You should go, you're wasting time
20:12That's not the point
20:1410.50am, finally it's off to the zoo
20:18Why we were slowed down is that people insisted on staying
20:21And waiting for the press to personalise some t-shirts before we go to the zoo
20:25No, no, no, no, no, we were giving it 20 minutes
20:28Because it was going to give us that extra margin
20:34St Pancras International
20:42Look at the little teddies
20:44Touting teddy bears to tourists, half the boys
20:48Can I show you this teddy bear that we're selling today by any chance?
20:51And he's a lovely bear, have you felt him?
20:53Yeah
20:54It's £15
20:55I don't want
20:57Would you like to take Jack home?
20:58Can you see Jack in Paris on the Champs Elysees?
21:01I don't think so
21:03The issue you've got is the bears aren't selling are they?
21:05I'm just going to question the cost price on these bears still
21:07Nick, it's Steve baby
21:08I'm going to make a decision, just give me a yes or a no
21:12I'm going to drop the price of the bear
21:13Are you happy to take responsibility for that?
21:15If you are, go ahead
21:16Let's not worry about responsibility, let's just get on with selling these
21:19Try and get a higher price, but, ok
21:22The idea of selling a teddy bear for £15 is something that the general public and the tourists haven't taken to at all
21:28And Nick's naturally trying to cover himself a bit I guess
21:30But that doesn't interest me, I'm just interested in winning this task
21:36At the girls' store, the kiddie clothes are selling
21:42Let me just get you some change
21:44Lovely ladies, come over, I love you, thank you
21:51Would you like to enter your pin form please?
21:54You're lovely
21:56Jade, who studied graphics at college, came up with some very charming, free sort of illustrations
22:02Of a lion, a tiger, and in between them a very worried looking penguin
22:06And I think actually her design is smashing
22:09And it's not me, although he likes them, the mums like them
22:12Why? Because they're buying them
22:14This one, that's no problem
22:19Products with a personal touch are proving popular
22:24For personalisation we add an extra £5
22:27Could we have Will, Ed, Kath?
22:29Yes
22:31There you go, look at that, isn't that cute?
22:35That suits your eyes
22:38I hope you enjoy that Robbie
22:43How far would you say we're off now?
22:47Gridlocked, the rest of the girls
22:51Just checking how you guys are doing
22:53We've been stuck in traffic this whole time
22:55Oh right, so you've literally just got to the zoo now
22:58We're still driving, we're going now
23:00We're still driving, we're still in the car
23:04So just to clarify, you've not actually reached the zoo yet?
23:07No
23:10OK
23:12At last, London Zoo
23:19With half the day gone, the girls prowl for parents with prams
23:24So we have to just take it in turns, OK?
23:27I'll handle this one
23:29Hello, how's your day going?
23:32Can I interest you in some products that we made
23:34It's our own design and we're selling them today
23:36There you go
23:38Leading the hunt, risk analyst Biliana
23:42Hello, could I interest you in our organic cotton hand-pressed t-shirts?
23:46Are we not taking this in turns?
23:48Just £6, your favourite animals
23:51I keep sweating the family and then she runs off and does it
23:54No, that's not fair, we're taking it in turns
23:56She needs to cop on to herself
23:58It's the funky zoo crew
24:00She's talking to kids that don't have money on them
24:03We can only go one at a time, you just had your sale
24:06So you need to give the next person a chance
24:08That was an amazing opportunity though
24:10Because kids don't have money on them
24:13We decided we would take turns to use everybody's strengths in sales
24:17But Biliana's definitely diving in there and taking over other people's sales
24:21Good afternoon madam, how's your day going?
24:23Sorry, we're copying you
24:24Would you like a jigsaw, honey?
24:26You don't want to be behaving like animals in the zoo
24:29We have a lion, a tiger
24:31Let's have a look at this
24:33We've got a jigsaw going on here
24:35My god, I feel so stressed
24:37Shall we go in Penguin Beach?
24:39The South Bank
24:41These were £6, they're now £5
24:43These were £15, they're now £10
24:45A bear? A bear, fantastic
24:47With prices dropped, tourist trade is brisk
24:49Thank you very much
24:51Nice doing business with you, thank you
24:53Hi guys, it looks like we might sell out in the next hour
24:55Get Hans to the pub and go and sell what you've got
24:58We'll head to the trade and get rid of this lot
25:00Running out of time, the boys look for bulk sales
25:04The unique perspective of these is obviously the branding on the front
25:07Doing the deal, refrigeration entrepreneur Azar
25:11I'll do £20 at £3
25:13£20 at £3.50
25:15Take the whole stock, £3.50
25:17That's a good mark
25:19Fantastic, you're a gem
25:21Come on, you're a gem, thank you very much
25:23Cheers
25:28There's a daddy with a little baby over there that I want to attack
25:34At the zoo, sales refuse to take off
25:38Look at that, it goes with your dress perfectly
25:40Oh thank you
25:42Thank you
25:44We're not selling great at all
25:46And stress is beginning to come across in the group
25:50Try and calm down because these are baby products
25:52To be fair, we would go off on one side and then you run over
25:54So it's not like we're kind of ignoring our own
25:56Stop bickering, come on, where are we going?
25:58Hi everyone
26:00I know this area quite well
26:02So I already have a couple of shops in mind
26:04So I think we should leave the zoo
26:06And go and try and make some sales to the trade
26:08You know the shops around here, are they very posh?
26:10Yeah, that's what I said, let's go
26:12Okay, we'll go on your local knowledge
26:16Guys, serious point
26:18This is not just a short road, this one goes on a good mile
26:20We're not near any shops
26:22Do you really think there's shops down here?
26:24I know where the shops are
26:26You're sure that this very long street
26:28That I remember
26:30Is not a very long street
26:32No, I'm sure
26:34Okay, let's run
26:40Greenwich, 30 minutes to go
26:42We are ready to go sell everything
26:44Let's go
26:50Gabrielle's girls run for the retailers
26:53Every single item, £3.40
26:55£3.20, and that's the deal
26:57Deal
26:59Let's shake on it
27:01So, £163.23
27:05Get rid of it, get rid of it
27:0712 minutes
27:09£0.50 a bag now, last few bags
27:11Thank you very much sir
27:13I need some change, fast, fast
27:15I don't know where I'm going here
27:17So where are we going?
27:19We are now, where are we going from here?
27:23We've got some products here today
27:25That we just want to show you
27:27And see if you're interested in buying off those
27:29The same pattern on the t-shirt
27:31Is on the jigsaws
27:33So what we could do, it's up to you
27:35We've also got some bags as well
27:37I wouldn't give you an answer today
27:39I would have to think about it
27:41We only have a few left and I'm prepared to give you a really good deal
27:43You know everybody, you know that they're coming to your shop
27:45You have the Pug, these are going to go so well
27:47You could also say that these bags are unique
27:49You are going to get them at the absolute steal
27:51It's been going really well today at the zoo
27:53I don't like buying under pressure
27:55And I don't like buying under stress
27:57Let's go guys, because we're wasting time
27:59Girls, I really don't appreciate that
28:01This is not a good idea
28:03To come in and barricade something
28:05You put her under tremendous pressure
28:07Ok, well look, I genuinely apologise
28:09Can I just offer you my sincere apologies
28:11Sorry about that
28:13Do you realise the last thing that you said
28:15Ok, we're wasting time, on to the next one
28:17I didn't say that
28:205pm
28:22Lord Sugar's first business test
28:24Is over
28:26Did you sell everything?
28:28No
28:30If the team have tried as hard as we have
28:32And have sold as hard as we have, we've won this
28:34But for the boys
28:36An unhappy customer
28:38Yeah basically, these have marks on
28:40Each one
28:42There's ten, they all have imperfections
28:44So you've got stains here, stains here
28:46You've got ones that are really really faded
28:48Or overprinted and missed
28:50So it's so unprofessional
28:52I do apologise, I can assure you
28:54It's not our intention to sell you any seconds of return merchandise
28:56They've sold some of their product
28:58That quite frankly deserves to be nowhere other than the bin
29:00They think they can get away with it
29:02But they haven't got away with it
29:04And now they're in the embarrassing situation
29:06Of having to refund a customer's money
29:08And go away
29:10With their tail between their legs
29:12Which quite frankly, that's where it deserves to be
29:14Awesome
29:44You can go through to the ballroom now
30:14Good morning
30:34Good morning
30:36Good morning sir
30:40The idea behind most businesses
30:42Is very simple
30:44And you couldn't get nothing simpler than this
30:46I told you to go and buy blank items
30:48And then you added some value to it
30:50And hopefully
30:52You made a profit
30:54Yeah
30:56We'll start with the gentleman's team
30:58You came up with the name Phoenix
31:00I understand yeah
31:02Whose idea was that
31:04It was my idea Lord Sugar
31:06Based upon the fact I'm sure in life and in business
31:08You're going to face some adversity along the way
31:10I guess so to speak
31:12OK it's not a bad name I suppose
31:14So project leader
31:16Myself
31:18Anybody else put themselves forward other than you
31:20No we had a bit of an embarrassing moment
31:22Where none of us put ourselves forward
31:24So I'm not sure how long it lasted for
31:26But I decided to put myself forward
31:28Because we needed a project manager
31:30I read in the CVs as are you said you'll be project manager
31:32Of all the tasks
31:34And Stephen says I'll put myself forward
31:36And they all went stum when it came to it
31:38That's right I'm happy to project manage any task
31:40I think before you'd got the words finished
31:42I'll do it if no one else will
31:44Everyone had jumped up and congratulated you Nick
31:46Right
31:48So anyway bearing in mind
31:50He stuck himself in the deep end here
31:52How was he as a team leader
31:54I've got a lot of respect for Nick for stepping forward as team leader
31:56OK
31:58So what were your products
32:00Have we got them over here
32:02Called Jack
32:04Nice Jack
32:06Not that much thought has gone into the design here does it
32:08That's it the bus
32:10That is it yeah
32:12You spent a lot of time
32:14Talking about profit
32:16Costs margin
32:18And the design very much was the second focus
32:20I am embarrassed about the design
32:22The design team wasn't too heavily taxed
32:24Let's put it that way
32:26You spent all your time talking about margins
32:28All day long
32:30Instead of design
32:32What was your margin philosophy
32:34For fifteen pounds
32:36For fifteen pounds
32:38You weren't in Bond Street
32:40We dropped it very quickly to ten
32:42That's a very good margin
32:44But the woman who you sold some bags to
32:46Rejected the whole lot in the end
32:48There was an issue with that
32:50Of course you can have the greatest margin in the world
32:52But if the end punter
32:54Doesn't want to buy your product
32:56Meaningless isn't it
32:58Yeah
33:00Let's move over to the ladies team
33:02I understand that you got yourself a team name
33:04Called Sterling
33:06Yes that's correct
33:08How did that come about
33:10I actually dreamt it the night before
33:12My friend gave me the idea in a dream
33:14Sounds very professional
33:16Sterling then
33:18Sterling it is
33:20And your team leader
33:22That was myself
33:24Gabrielle I saw on your CV
33:26That you were going to open a print firm
33:28So this class was a really good experience
33:30Anybody else put themselves forward to be the team leader
33:34When somebody's got that expertise
33:36Why wouldn't we let her take the lead
33:38I preach that all the time
33:40The person who is expert in the particular task
33:42Should put themselves forward
33:44Fair enough
33:46Good team leader or not
33:48I think she was probably a little bit flustered
33:50By the fact she had lots of very strong women
33:52Underneath her
33:54Which I would have thought anyone would be
33:56Even one of the guys
33:58So these are the designs
34:00And who did the design
34:02Who did these things
34:04It was Jade
34:06What is it your own graphics
34:08That's very good
34:10I hand drew it and then we just scanned it into the computer
34:12Really
34:14You can have that one on us
34:18So these were your designs
34:20How did you get on with the selling then
34:22Everybody sold
34:24What I delegated to everyone was actually to sell
34:26Then that on the sub team
34:28She used to relay back all figures back to me
34:32I wasn't actually officially put in charge of the sub team
34:34I had taken over
34:36Because nobody had done anything on the finance side
34:38You took charge, is that what you're saying
34:40Well basically
34:42It just needed to be done
34:46Do you know what
34:48I think it's time now for me to get some numbers
34:50So
34:52Starting
34:54Nick with the ladies team
34:56Yeah
34:58Team sterling
35:00Total sales 690 pounds 60 pence
35:02Minus the total spend
35:04Of 475 80
35:06That gave them a profit
35:08Of 214 pounds and 80 pence
35:12214 pound profit
35:16And Karen for the boys
35:20Total sales
35:22Came to
35:241015 pounds and 60 pence
35:26And you spent
35:28399 pounds and 40 pence
35:30On printing and products
35:32Leaving you a profit of
35:34616 pounds and 20 pence
35:36616 pounds
35:44Well it's very good
35:46Very good for the first task
35:48I've laid on an art inspired reception
35:50For you back at the house
35:52So help yourself to
35:54Canapes and cocktails
35:56And I'll see you on the next task
36:00Thank you guys
36:02Cheers
36:16Well I think
36:18You need to go away and discuss this
36:20All amongst yourselves
36:22Because at least one of you
36:24Will be leaving this process today
36:32Yeah
36:361, 2, 3
36:38Phoenix
36:42Well guys we've won our first task
36:44And we're getting out of the tails
36:56We pulled in the same direction
36:58They had 8 people that went in 8 different directions
37:00We have got a really good bond between us
37:02Some serious bromance going on
37:14I'm so sorry that we're all in this
37:16Horrible position
37:18But you just didn't do enough
37:20Some decisions weren't made quickly enough
37:22On the second day
37:24We didn't leave early enough for the zoo
37:26When I kept saying it's an hour away
37:28And if we catch traffic
37:30It's going to take even longer
37:32The second day we were held back
37:34Now you've got something to say
37:36Yes because I'm really angry
37:38I'm not speaking I'm shouting now
37:40Shut up
37:42The team lost because
37:44Gabrielle didn't take critical decisions
37:46Fast enough
37:48We voted her based on her expertise
37:50In the field
37:52However she didn't come across as an expert at all
37:54And I think she should be fired
37:56If I'm dragged back in
37:58I will fight very very strongly
38:00Because I know that I'm not to blame
38:02For this failure of this task
38:04I'm really gutted
38:06To be going back to the boardroom
38:08I really believed
38:10Everyone tried their best
38:12But I guess in the boardroom
38:14I'll actually find out who was responsible
38:26You can go through to the boardroom now
38:56Well
38:58I trust you've
39:00You've had a chat amongst yourselves
39:02And each of you have some kind of
39:04Idea in your mind as to
39:06What has gone wrong
39:08Where do you want to start
39:10From my point of view
39:12The guys were very focused
39:14On their margins
39:16They were focused on how many products
39:18They were going to buy
39:20And what they were going to make at the end of the day
39:22We didn't do that
39:24That's a strategy Jane
39:26No I know that and I'm saying we didn't do that
39:28So you're saying it was a bit of a free-for-all was it
39:30Well no it wasn't a free-for-all
39:32It was left and I did it
39:34Pricing strategy was sorted out after we'd done the designing
39:36Once we knew how much we had
39:38So really there was no set strategy
39:40No strategy
39:42No
39:44I do admit
39:46The first couple of hours was mental for me
39:48But I think our problem was
39:50Sales
39:52We didn't sell enough
39:54We could have maybe pushed it slightly higher
39:56There was 93 items out of your 250
39:58Left over
40:0040% of what you decided to make
40:02Do you have 40% of your stock left over
40:04In your restaurant every day
40:06Not in any ratio
40:08No
40:10Do you have 40% of your stuff left over
40:12No
40:14The Greenwich mob sold £440
40:16And the London Zoo team
40:18Sold £225
40:20There seems to be
40:22A period of non-selling
40:24Due to
40:26Great distance in location
40:28Well there was a trudge across London
40:30Yes there was
40:32They got to a shop and attacked the shopkeeper
40:34Who was so affronted by their sales approach
40:36That she wouldn't buy anything
40:38She couldn't stand being cornered
40:40By a pack of bang hyenas
40:42I was absolutely adamant to Biliana
40:44That this was a long walk
40:46Biliana was pretty adamant
40:48She knew they were going to buy them
40:50And we really pushed on that point
40:52Actually the reason I sent Biliana to London Zoo
40:54Was because she knew the area very well
40:56Right I think it's my time to say something now
40:58On the second day
41:00I was sent to the Zoo
41:02Because I really do know the area quite well
41:04And I promise you
41:06I took them to the closest available shop
41:08Well the closest available shop
41:10To the Regent's Park Zoo
41:12Is just down the road in Camden Town surely
41:14No Camden Town is further
41:16From London Zoo Lord Sugar
41:18I drive past it every day
41:20Anyway
41:22Yes exactly anyway
41:24The majority of the problems are definitely
41:26A result of bad management initially
41:28What happened was that some decisions
41:30Weren't made quickly enough
41:32So we were held back at Greenwich Market
41:34Because Gabrielle backed by Jane
41:36Was keeping us there
41:38Because she wanted to have some items personalised
41:40Before we go and sell them to the Zoo
41:42These 20 minutes were critical
41:44We were caught in traffic and being delayed even more
41:46Biliana just as Chris go
41:48As the 20 minutes we spent walking across the park
41:50I kept saying that it takes an hour
41:52To get to the Zoo
41:54We were caught in traffic
41:56We ran out of time
41:58Biliana I've looked at what your background is
42:00It's all to do with financial services
42:02With risk management
42:04And so was you focused on margins then or what?
42:06I understood the importance of the margins
42:08And I sincerely thought
42:10This is not something to get involved straight away
42:12It's something to do with businesses
42:14If I was experienced in finances
42:16I would be straight in there to prove
42:18That I can actually do it
42:20And I'm good at what I do
42:22Risk analysis if that's your speciality
42:24Can I just continue?
42:26It was very risky to go
42:28But you still insisted that we went
42:30Jade you did the design
42:32I did design, I did print
42:34I sold
42:36I think I was a key member in the team
42:38Who didn't pull their weight then in your opinion?
42:40It's really hard to say who didn't pull their weight
42:42I wasn't with Katie
42:44So I don't know what she did
42:46Okay, Katie, what did you do?
42:48Well I was a fantastic team player
42:50I got involved in every point
42:52I made lots of sales
42:54I got my hands dirty at every point
42:56You made lots of sales?
42:58I did sell
43:00But people jumped in on my sales
43:02I thought you were sort of missing really
43:04I just struggled to get a word in edgeways a lot
43:06And for me I've put my professionalism
43:08Probably above putting my neck on the line
43:10I suppose
43:12Because I'm not going to shout over people
43:14In order to simply get my voice heard
43:16It's just not what I want to do
43:20Well look, ladies
43:22We could go on all night here
43:24You know the next part of this process
43:26Gabrielle, which two people
43:28Are you bringing back in this boardroom now?
43:30Biliana
43:32And Katie
43:34Right, okay
43:36You five ladies go back to the house
43:38And I'll see you on the next task
43:40Thank you
43:46Okay, look
43:48I'm going to have a chat
43:50With Nick and Karen
43:52I'd just like you to step outside
43:54For one more moment
43:56When you come back in here
43:58One of you is leaving the process, okay?
44:06Well, a fiery bunch of
44:08Ladies there
44:10In particular, Biliana
44:12Clearly she's rubbed them out the wrong way
44:14But on the other hand
44:16She's got some excellent credentials
44:18She's not here to win a popularity contest
44:20No, exactly
44:22She's here as a businesswoman
44:24And Gabrielle, well
44:26She seems a very nice, kind of pleasant girl
44:28But some of the people are saying
44:30That she didn't give you any direction
44:32And that's the price
44:34I'm not here to sell it for, this is the margin I want
44:38And Katie, well
44:40I think it's you that are not quite sure
44:42What she's been up to
44:44And you're my eyes and ears out there
44:46Slow off the blocks
44:48She didn't have the force of character to break through, actually
44:54You can go through to the boardroom now
45:04Okay
45:14Well, Gabrielle
45:16You've brought in Katie and Biliana
45:20I think it's reasonable for you to explain why
45:22First of all
45:24Katie, because
45:26Maybe you did pull your weight
45:28But I myself did not see that
45:30And I'm just going on what everyone else has told me
45:34I think it's because of Biliana
45:36Making everyone waste a lot of time
45:38Okay, so
45:40Biliana, it doesn't take a brain surgeon
45:42To work out that there seems to be
45:44A kind of a general despondency towards you
45:46Okay
45:48Now, I'm a very fair person, okay
45:50And I have seen
45:52Enough times in this boardroom
45:54People kind of trying to gang up on someone
45:56In order to place blame
45:58So I'm, you know, I'm too long in the tooth
46:00To fall for all that nonsense
46:02You've got any idea what it is?
46:04Lord Sugar, I'm so pleased that you
46:06Picked up on that straight away
46:08Because I felt that throughout the course of the two days
46:10I have been increasingly sidelined
46:12For totally the wrong reasons
46:14But most of all, the main reason is
46:16I wasn't as loud as some of the other girls
46:18And was consistently making good points
46:20But failing to really enforce them
46:24Now, Lord Sugar, as you can see from my title
46:26I'm in risk management
46:28My role within the bank is
46:30To take risks and do something about them
46:32Right
46:34Now, this is exactly how I approach this task
46:36Biliana, you're sitting there talking like
46:38A city strategist
46:40Where this is a two bob outing, this thing
46:42Go and buy a bit of stuff
46:44Print your name on it
46:46And flog it to people in the street
46:48That's what really annoys me
46:50This is not a takeover of Goldman Sachs
46:52This is simple stuff, right?
46:54I completely agree
46:56I think it was a no-brainer
46:58Gabrielle failed to take time-critical decisions
47:00I was worried about her management skills
47:02I was worried about her decision-making
47:04Why were you worried about her management skills?
47:06Because she wasn't taking the important decisions
47:08Fast enough
47:10She wasn't leading the group
47:12I was very much in control
47:14I never had an argument with anybody
47:16I made sure everyone that was under my eye
47:18Worked to the very maximum
47:20They worked to the best
47:22There was blood, sweat and tears
47:24And I was part of that team
47:26I was with you for one day
47:28I was with you for one day
47:30That's great, that's fantastic
47:32However, you can't use it also as an excuse
47:34I've got a small voice, nobody listens to me
47:36I have a small voice
47:38But everybody respected me
47:40Everyone that was under my eye at least listened to me
47:42However, you
47:44All I hear is just excuse, excuse, excuse
47:46What's your excuse for everything that you did?
47:48You said to me, you knew the area
47:50I made about £210
47:52Going to shops
47:54You could have made the same
47:56If you actually stood up to what you said you did
47:58So, I think I've got the picture here
48:00I've got the picture here
48:02Sales were time critical Lord Sugar
48:04And we were held back from the beginning of the day
48:06And we were held back later on by
48:08Stop, stop, stop, stop, stop
48:10Stop, stop, stop, stop, stop
48:12Katie
48:14Haven't heard much from you
48:16And earlier on today
48:18You said to me that you're
48:20Very professional
48:22If there's three people already talking to someone
48:24I keep quiet, keep away
48:26Have you heard that broken record before in here?
48:28Yeah
48:30I can't tell you the amount of times I've heard that
48:32From people who
48:34Do sit back sometimes and do nothing
48:36You say that you believe the biggest mistake
48:38Is to try and hide behind others
48:40You actually say that in your own resume
48:42And I agree with that
48:44It's vital to be strong
48:46I absolutely swear I was not hiding
48:48There's no way I would do that
48:50Why shouldn't I fire you then?
48:52What I want to say to you Lord Sugar
48:54Is that, you know, give me another chance
48:56Give me an opportunity
48:58I will prove to you that I'm a worthy business partner
49:00I'm a great negotiator
49:02I'm used to creating products and getting them to market
49:04I've got so much that
49:06I can bring to this process
49:08Okay, so who do you think is responsible
49:10For the failure of this task?
49:12You know, I did find that Gabrielle took some time
49:14To make decisions
49:16But I also have to say, Biliana
49:18That I have found it very difficult
49:20To work with you
49:22Biliana, why shouldn't I fire you?
49:24Lord Sugar, you shouldn't fire me
49:26Because I'm a complete self-starter
49:28And I have achieved so much from my humble beginning
49:30I came to this country
49:32Aged 17 on a scholarship
49:34That was initially meant to be for one year
49:36Not only was the scholarship extended
49:38But I was also made head girl
49:40And given the responsibility of running a prestigious school
49:42And representing it to the city of London
49:44Listen, listen, listen
49:46I don't want to bring out your life
49:48Your previous life
49:50Lots of people got great stories to tell me
49:52I don't want to bring out the violin
49:54And listen to your sob story
49:56Tell me why I shouldn't fire you
49:58In respect to this task
50:00I said that opening line
50:02Because I wanted to illustrate
50:04That whatever I get my hands on
50:06I have an impact
50:08Who should be fired then in this task?
50:10I think Gabrielle was a bad manager to the first task
50:12She didn't take time-critical decisions
50:14And she didn't show that expertise
50:16I admit I wasn't quick on the ball in the beginning
50:18But give me another chance
50:20I will be project manager again
50:22Two, three times by the end of the process
50:24And every single time I will be better and better
50:26You already had your chance
50:28No, no, no
50:30I will take the chance again
50:32I've heard enough here today
50:34I don't need any
50:36More intervention from anybody
50:38Gabrielle
50:40You did work hard
50:42And you showed a lot of passion
50:44But there's been lots of talk from the other people
50:46About the lack of direction
50:50And this task
50:52Was deliberately designed to be simple
50:54It is not rocket science
50:58Katie
51:00As I said to you earlier on
51:02People have been in this boardroom many times
51:04Telling me about
51:06Well, I don't like to override this one
51:08I don't like to override that one
51:10And sometimes those people's actions
51:12Cost them dearly
51:16And
51:18Biliana, well
51:20You have clearly got the capability of doing something
51:22But you have not
51:24Given anybody any credit for doing anything
51:26Including taking some blame
51:28But if you give me the opportunity
51:30I don't wish to hear any more from you
51:32I will prove you that I'll be a solid project manager
51:34I'm not listening to anybody anymore now
51:36I've had enough of listening to you
51:38I'm telling you what the situation is
51:40Whether you like it or not
51:44It is a difficult decision to make
51:46In this first task
51:48Because I don't know any of you, okay
51:50And so
51:52The person leaving today may feel
51:54That they haven't had enough time to show themselves
51:56But that's tough
51:58That's what this process is about
52:00And I did say at my introduction
52:02That I don't want anybody to hide
52:04And on that basis
52:06One more chance to be a project manager
52:08No, I'm sorry
52:10And she failed
52:12Don't do yourself any favours
52:14I'll show you
52:16I don't think so
52:18Biliana
52:20You are
52:22Fired
52:24That's a shame but
52:26Thank you for the opportunity
52:37So toss up there Katie
52:39You asked for another chance, you got another chance
52:41We will be watching what's going on
52:43Go back to the house, okay
52:45Thank you
52:57It was a very, very close call
52:59But Katie, I don't know
53:01I think the balance was that I did know about Biliana
53:03It is unfortunate for them
53:06That their demeanour
53:08Can be their demise
53:30I feel the decision was unfair
53:32And I don't think that my performance
53:34Cost us the task
53:36I think Gabrielle deserved to be fired
53:38More than me
53:40But my business plan is excellent
53:42So I'll just move on straight away
53:48Biliana actually did me the biggest favour in the world
53:50Because she buried herself
53:52But I owe her a drink, to be honest
54:00Who do you really want to come back out of the three?
54:02I want Gabrielle to come back
54:04There were mistakes made
54:06But she's a strong candidate
54:08We think Katie's probably going to go home, don't we?
54:20I'm still here
54:22Is that it?
54:24Am I not enough?
54:30I'm not going to lie guys
54:32That is probably one of the most stressful moments
54:34Of my whole entire life
54:38Fifteen candidates remain
54:42The fight for Lord Sugar's quarter of a million pound investment
54:44Has begun
