Latest TV: Sussex news headlines and Brighton and Hove Albion chat
Transcript
00:30Hello and welcome to Latest TV News. I'm Sam Morton, a reporter for Sussex World and
00:37in this week's show we will be reflecting on Bryson Hovalbion's epic FA Cup win at
00:42Newcastle as their brilliant run of form continues. We will also look ahead to this weekend's
00:47home league match against Fulham. First, here are the top stories from across Sussex.
00:53Sussex Police have charged seven men in connection with drug supply. Acting on intelligence,
00:58officers conducted a warrant at a property in London Road, Bryton on Thursday 27th February.
01:03Sussex Police said they found around £2,800 in cash, mobile phones and arrested four men
01:09on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of cocaine. A second linked property in Bedford
01:15Road was also searched. Officers found Class A and Class B drugs ready for sale as well
01:20as over £10,000 in cash. Sussex Police said three men in the property were arrested for
01:26possession with intensive supply of cocaine and cannabis. A councillor has raised concerns
01:31about 22 weeks of disruption and traffic chaos which he said would be caused by the closure
01:36of an East Sussex bridge. Councillor Sam Adenji, who represents Seaford North, said East Sussex
01:41County Council is moving forward with plans to replace Exit Bridge on a like-for-like
01:46basis in the same location. The cabinet was said to consider building a one-lane replacement
01:51bridge on Tuesday March 4th with permanent traffic lights. The council had originally
01:56planned to replace the bridge with a two-lane design to remove the traffic bottleneck and
02:01in 2021 they secured about £8 million of levelling up funding from the Department for
02:06Transport. But the council said this two-lane bridge is now unaffordable due to the time
02:11taken to secure planning permission. Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner Katie Bourne
02:16is unhappy with a funding decision by the government amid the introduction of a new
02:20Crime and Policing Bill. A package of new laws will tackle antisocial behaviour, shop
02:26theft and street crime the UK government announced last week. The Crime and Policing Bill which
02:31is central to the government's Plan for Change and Safer Streets mission was introduced
02:35on Tuesday February 25th and has begun its journey to becoming law. Mrs Bourne welcomed
02:39the crackdown on shop theft, assault and abuse of shop workers as well as antisocial behaviour.
02:44However, she said it was perplexing and disappointing that the government has stopped the cycle
02:48of Safer Streets funding as this has transformed city centres over the past four years. She
02:53said similarly the government has pulled the plug on a successful immediate justice programme
02:58which was popular with residents as it saw offenders clean graffiti and pick up litter
03:02in reparative activities for the harm and damage they have caused.
03:06Customers can finally try out a new Korean-Japanese sushi restaurant in Worthing. Kokoro in Warwick
03:11Street has opened months after it was revealed that the national chain was set to open a
03:15Worthing branch. Customers could be seen sitting inside the venue and enjoying a range
03:19of dishes at the weekend.
03:21Finally, a popular pub in Southwick is set to close for refurbishment with a new garden
03:26area set to be built. The Cricketers Southwick which earned TripAdvisor's Traveller's
03:31Choice Award in 2024 will be closing at 10pm on March 16th for a short time while staff
03:37make some exciting changes. A social media notice added we will reopen with a brand new
03:41look. We can't wait for you all to see the new and improved Cricks. Thank you to
03:46customers for your continuous support. Exterior works at the Green King Pub are already underway
03:50with scaffolding up and fences being installed for a new garden area. Stay tuned for the
03:55Goalmouth Action podcast.
03:57Welcome to another episode of the Goalmouth Action podcast where we take a look at all
04:14the latest goings on at Brighton and Hove Abbey in Crawleytown. I'm Matt Pole and this
04:18week I'm joined by Crawleytown expert Mark Dunford, Sam Mourne who covers both Brighton
04:23and the Reds and Sussex sport guru Steve Bone who also co-presents the wildly successful
04:28Sussex non-league podcast with myself. Danny Wolbeck scored an extra time winner as Brighton
04:33beat Newcastle to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals after an instant packed tie that ended ten
04:37a side. We'll look back at that fantastic win at the Magpies plus we'll bring you the
04:42latest injury news as Abbey prepare to entertain Fulham in the Premier League as well as all
04:46the latest from a tumultuous week at Crawleytown and I think even that might be an understatement.
04:51You can read all the stories we are talking about with videos and pictures online at sussexworld.co.uk
04:55forward slash sport and you can check out other great videos on shotstv.com and freeview
04:59channel 262. You may also be watching on latest TV so thank you very much for tuning in but
05:05we will start at St James' Park where Danny Wolbeck was the hero for Brighton scoring
05:09deep an extra time as Fabian Hertz over the side beat Newcastle 2-1 an FA Cup thriller
05:13to reach the quarter-finals. Newcastle had taken a 22nd minute lead through an Alexander
05:17Isak penalty but Jankuba Minter levelled just before half-time. Newcastle's Anthony
05:23Gordon was shown a straight red in the 83rd minute for pushing Jan-Paul van Hecken ahead
05:27before Brighton defender Tarek Lamte was then dismissed in added time for a second booking
05:31following a late challenge from Jacob Murphy. The game looked as if it would be going to
05:34penalties before Soli March played in Wolbeck with six minutes left and he calmly chipped
05:38homekeeper Maayan Dubravka to send the away fans wild. As we've just seen there Sam, breathless
05:44game, sum that up if you can.
05:46Yeah, it was an epic win for Brighton really and I mentioned in a chat with Darren in a
05:53kind of previous podcast where it was just kind of a bit unexpected. I think obviously
05:57with Newcastle they're really strong at home and St James' Park is one of the toughest
06:02places to go and obviously we were all kind of dreading it when the draw came out for
06:06this one thinking it's a really tough game for Brighton and obviously they were in a
06:10great run of form going into it so there was plenty of reasons to be positive and they
06:14really did continue where they left off in the previous games really and they were brilliant
06:19in this game. There were 36 shots in the match with 10 on target so it was a real kind of
06:25lively one with lots of attacks going in the game so that's obviously great for the neutral
06:33and that's what it's been described as, a really good FA Cup tie, kind of a classic
06:37FA Cup tie really which was good for the neutral and obviously it didn't get off to the best
06:41of starts as you mentioned for Brighton as they did go a goal down to Isak's penalty.
06:46There's a lot of talk before the game whether he's going to be fit enough to play and there's
06:50kind of hopes among Brighton that he might not be because obviously he's just such a
06:53brilliant player and can make a difference in these kind of games but Brighton recovered
06:57so well from that and it was Jankuba Minter who gave away the penalty but then levelled
07:01the scoring against his old team. Lovely finish, it was just the fourth half time and Brighton
07:07actually were the team most likely to score and even more so after Anthony Gordon's ludicrous
07:12red card, I don't know what he was thinking really, to push Van Hecken in the way that
07:18he did. Whistle had already gone so he's obviously going to massively regret that as he's going
07:22to miss the Carabao Cup final and he was made to pay on the day as well with obviously Brighton
07:27ended up winning the game in extra time but they did actually nearly lose it with Fabian
07:31Scherr scoring a goal literally right in injury time of normal time but VAR came to
07:37the rescue and it was Brighton that stole the win obviously through Danny Welbeck's
07:40brilliant winner.
07:41Yes, well it was a brilliant winner was it and his goal was his eighth of the season
07:45and he is now only four off his record of 12 at Manchester United which was in the 2011-12
07:49season. Post-match, nice line from Danny Welbeck who put his renaissance down to the good genes
07:54passed down from his mum and dad but that aside, Sam what has triggered Welbeck's rejuvenation
08:00this season and could he win an England recall?
08:02Yes, you never know because it really is incredible, the upturn in form. I mean he's been brilliant
08:09ever since he's been with Brighton Bridge, he's been such an important player for them
08:14and his experience has helped obviously some of the younger players coming through the
08:18ranks as well and he's always been described as a real role model in his team but especially
08:23this season he's just really just kind of found his career best form. We've said it
08:27so many times but he just needs to be getting better and better and obviously he's had a
08:31couple of injuries and he was without a goal since October when he scored that winner against
08:36Bournemouth but he's just continued where he left off really before those injuries and
08:40he's still such a top quality striker and the quality of the finish against Newcastle
08:45was brilliant and I don't think many players would be able to do it in that way but he
08:49did and it was a brilliant goal and nice that Soddy Martens was back to get the assist as
08:54well. So it was his eighth goal of the season well back and he's now only two behind, he's
09:01only behind two of his Manchester United goal scoring tallies and one at Arsenal and he's
09:06four off his record which was 12 at Man Utd in 2011-12 and Wayne Rooney was on punishment
09:11duty during the FA Cup weekend and he said Danny was great to play alongside and if he's
09:16being honest he would like to see him back at Man Utd because he's better than really
09:21any strikers they have there and they sold him ten years ago so it's pretty crazy when
09:26you consider a thing like that really. So it's great for Brighton, great for Welbeck
09:30and he said himself that he's feeling really good, feeling fit and strong and as you mentioned
09:34he thanks his mum and dad for giving him good genes.
09:38I was going to say with the goal I hate it when people say oh if so-and-so had scored
09:42that goal there'd be massive headlines and that but if someone like Messi, Ronaldo had
09:47scored that goal it was an incredible finish, it was like a roofed dink, I don't know what
09:52the phrasing is for a finish like that. It was just a brilliant finish and I don't think
09:57he'll get an England call-up just simply because of his age but he deserves it for the way
10:01he's been playing this year and you need a bit of experience at international level there,
10:06I know we've got Kane and that but put him in there, that's what I say.
10:09Yeah I think you'd probably make a case for quite a few Brighton players but like Jack
10:12Kinsherwood I think and Soli March would have been pre-injury but I guess we'll have to
10:16wait and see really. Brighton have now won five consecutive matches in all competitions
10:21for the first time ever as a top-flight club and they are now just two victories from reaching
10:25their first FA Cup final since 1983. Match winner Welbeck said it would be really tough
10:30for Aberdeen to lift the famous Old Trophy but why can't they dream of winning the FA
10:34Cup Steve, it seems like the most open it's been in years.
10:37Yeah I disagree with Danny, sorry, I think they can dream of it. I think anybody, any
10:44team left in the FA Cup this year because of the way it's opened up can think yeah we've
10:48got great chance of getting to the final and actually we've got great chance of winning it.
10:53I know Mark likes me to harp back to 2008 when my team Portsmouth won the FA Cup but
10:58it's opened up in the way that did then, back then.
11:01One of the worst FA Cup finals ever but anyway carry on.
11:04You wait your turn you, 2008 Man Utd and Chelsea were the only two so-called big teams to get to
11:10the quarterfinals and they both lost. Chelsea lost to Barnsley, Man Utd lost to Portsmouth who
11:15went on to win it in case you didn't know. This year Man City are the only so-called big team
11:20left in it. We've lost Man Utd, we've lost Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool and now we've lost Newcastle as
11:26well. Aston Villa might claim that they're one of the big clubs as well, they're still in as well
11:31but it's just very open and you're already guaranteed a more interesting final than I
11:36think we've had in recent years. No disrespect to all the big sides but when the final is two from
11:43Arsenal, Liverpool, Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea every season it gets a bit boring and you kind
11:48of forget who wins it year to year unless you're a fan of one of those teams, goes and enjoys it.
11:53So now we've got the prospect of you know we could have Brighton against Aston Villa final,
11:57we could have Preston against Crystal Palace final. Obviously it's a great shame that Robbie
12:02Savage won't be watching it if it's two small teams. I'm sure the TV
12:07people will have to think again next year if Robbie's not going to watch it if it's not two
12:11big teams playing but now Brighton have got as good a chance as anyone. We'll come on to their
12:16tie in a minute I'm sure but I'm actually old enough to remember 1983 when they got to the
12:23final before played Man Utd, drew 2-2 in the first game classic final. Brighton should have won it,
12:28the famous Gordon Smith moment where he had to score and didn't and they then lost the final,
12:34they lost the replay 4-0. But no if I was a Brighton fan I think I'd be more excited about
12:40the chance of winning the FA Cup than about whether they're going to get into Europe again.
12:45If they keep focused on it and can keep injury free and have a strong
12:50line-up in that quarterfinal, every chance of a Wembley return.
12:55Well they'll have to get past Nottingham Forest who booked their FA Cup quarterfinal trip to
12:58Brighton after a penalty shoot-out win over Ipswich on Monday evening and I'm sure Albion
13:03fans don't need reminding but Forest absolutely thumped them 7-0 at the city ground at the start
13:07of February. What do you make of that draw for the seagulls Steve? It could have been better
13:11but it could have been worse I think and can you see there being a repeat of that performance at
13:14the city ground? I think yeah I should say they could have had an easier tie but they're at home
13:20and it's Nottingham Forest and yes Nottingham Forest beat them 7-0 at the start of February
13:25but look at what's happened since then. Brighton have been unstoppable since then. They put that
13:30behind them straight away. I think they didn't they make up the goal difference in two games
13:33I think they won 4-0 and then 3-0 which was quite something and I think it's almost been a turning
13:40point for Brighton actually. I think the manager looked at his tactics, burned his tactics sheet
13:46didn't he at the training ground or something. I think he's had a reset and a refresh and they've
13:52looked very good since. Nottingham Forest I think after that 7-0 win went and lost 5-0 at Bournemouth
13:57quite soon after that might even be in the next game. So I think that is you know in football
14:03terms that's sort of in the dim and distant past actually and I don't think I don't think
14:07Brighton need to worry about that game when they when they turn out for this one. Different
14:11competition, different ground, it'd be a great atmosphere. It'd be live on TV all the quarterfinals
14:17I think it'd be live and Brighton players and fans will be aware of who's left in the FA Cup
14:23and they'll be thinking yeah this is a great chance for us and I would take them to get through.
14:29Well in the here and now this Saturday sees the Seagulls return to Premier League action as they
14:34welcome Fulham to the Amex. The Cottagers who beat FA Cup holders Manchester United on penalties on Sunday
14:38to advance to the quarterfinals sit ninth in the table, a point and a place behind Brighton.
14:43Sam how do you see this one going? It seems like a lot recently we've seen we just said toss a
14:48coin really and what's the latest injury news from the Albion camp? Yeah Fulham is not a game that
14:54Brighton often do well in actually. It's one of those real bogey teams for them and they'll be
15:00looking to avenge that defeat at Craven Cottage earlier this season. But I think Brighton will
15:06be going into it with confidence but I think just because of the form they're in and I know Fulham
15:10obviously will also be on a high as well and coming away from that FA Cup win over Man United
15:15on penalties. But when you look at the table Brighton are actually only one point above Fulham
15:20so it's a real big game in that sense. Fulham can go above obviously Brighton in that race for
15:25Europe and cement there obviously what is a great season for them as well. So I don't think it's a
15:29given at all that Brighton will go and win this game easily and they might also be without Karim
15:35Mutoma which would be a big blow. So he appeared to hobble off as he left the pitch against Newcastle
15:43it seemed like a problem with his left knee. Herzog said that he'd have to wait for a scan to
15:48see how bad the issue is and he can then say more but hopefully it's not bad and it's just a case of
15:53waiting to see how he is really. If he is out Mutoma obviously it'd be a huge blow with the
15:58quality he has and the form he's been in but Simon Odinga is a ready-made replacement that can
16:04definitely do a job and I'll be confident enough that he can play well and hopefully help Brighton
16:08get the win. But as we know Brighton are also without Igor due to a hamstring problem. James
16:14Milne is out with also a hamstring issue. Ferdy Kadioglu stood out with a toe injury. Lewis Dunk
16:20I don't think will be ready after his rib injury that he's had. Jason Steele was out with a shoulder
16:25injury. Joel Veltman is out with a foot injury and Matt O'Reilly we think is still out for illness
16:31as well. So plenty of absentees for Brighton but as we know they've got such a big squad
16:37with so much quality that I think they'll be able to have more than enough to win this game
16:43if they play anywhere near as good as they have been in the last few games.
16:46Absolutely, well best of luck to Brighton at the weekend. We will take a short break now
16:50stay tuned as we will be discussing all things from a very interesting week.
17:20Welcome back to part two as the great man is here this week and we can finally go for a stroll
17:24down Steve Bones' score prediction corner after a very very long time. It's been too long isn't it?
17:30It's been far too long and we'll start with you Steve. Brighton v Fulham this week.
17:36First question is how do you see this one going and the second question is when you used to appear
17:39on this podcast you always used to give a line on whether you liked the team or not.
17:43So I'd like to get your opinion on Fulham if possible. Where do they stand?
17:46How can you hate Fulham?
17:48I don't hate Fulham. I don't mind Fulham actually. I had some good trips there back in the 80s and 90s
17:54with Portsmouth. In fact I don't think there's any teams we're talking about this week that I
17:58don't particularly like which is obviously 58 in the football league that I don't like.
18:03Brighton against Fulham now has got a disappointing one-all draw written all over it hasn't it?
18:07Brighton have drawn more at home than they've won I think this season in the league.
18:11I can see this being another one. I think Brighton will score early, they'll be ahead for about an hour.
18:16Fulham will score in the last 10 minutes and it'll be another two points dropped which will be
18:20massively frustrating for them.
18:21Yes it will be. Sam what do you reckon is the future of Brighton?
18:24I think it will be a very very difficult situation for Brighton,
18:27especially given the way they've been in the league and the way they're playing.
18:32Yes, it will be. Sam, what do you reckon will happen? It's a tough one to call, I think.
18:36Yeah, as I mentioned earlier, Fulham are not a team that Brighton like playing against.
18:41As they've got a few injury problems to deal with, as I mentioned, I also forgot to say
18:45that Lamptey would also be suspended for this one after his red card against Newcastle,
18:50which obviously they managed to get away with on the day, but it will be a big miss, especially
18:54if Beltman's out. So, probably expect Jack Hinshaw to slot in it right back.
18:58I imagine it will be a good game. I'll say two-all for this one. I think Fulham are a
19:03good team and Brighton will be somewhat happy with that, I think.
19:07Do you reckon we're headed for a draw then, Mark?
19:10Yeah, I think so. I was going to go two-two. I just think, yeah, Brighton's record against
19:16Fulham doesn't bode well and after the high of what's happened in recent weeks, I think
19:21they will be brought back. Fulham are a very, very good side. Mark Silva's done a great
19:26job there, hasn't he?
19:27Yes, indeed. And moving to League One, as we mentioned, Crawley have got a home double
19:32header starting with Reading on Saturday. Any hope there, Mark? I'm struggling to see
19:37any at the moment.
19:38Yeah, it's the 12.30 kick-off this week. It's on TV. I went to the Majeski Stadium back
19:46in whenever it was, October, I think it was, when Crawley lost 4-1 and it was one of those
19:50games where you just did not know how they lost 4-1. They hit the post a couple of times.
19:55They had a couple of efforts cleared off the line and they were hit on the break four
20:00times. I can't remember Reading having that many efforts other than the four they scored.
20:04So, they can take some kind of hope from that, but Ronan Darsey was the best player that
20:09day and obviously he's not there anymore. So, yeah, I'm going to go for a draw in this
20:16one. I'm going to go for a one-all hopeful draw and I think that will be a good result.
20:20They'd take a draw, wouldn't they, Sam? How do you see it going at the ball?
20:23Yeah, they'd take a draw. I was going to say one-all as well. So, I'll be different
20:27and say two-all.
20:28I have a feeling we're going to get some Steve Bone realism here when it comes to this one.
20:33What do you reckon?
20:34I've just remembered I don't like Reading very much, but I can't remember why. I think
20:40we may have had a vague southern rivalry with them at some point, but that was a long time
20:45ago. I think if you offered Crawley three points out of six from the two home games,
20:52I think they'd probably bite your hand off. I think they'd say, yeah, we'll settle for
20:54that because it's against two form sides. Can't see it happening against Reading though.
20:58Crawley two, Reading three.
21:00Oh, sorry, Mark, what was that?
21:04No, I was just going to say, it'd be a good game if it's three-two. I'll be happy with
21:07that.
21:08Yeah, absolutely. And on Tuesday evening, as we've mentioned, they're at home to Charlton.
21:13Sam, what do you reckon? I'm not feeling optimistic about this week. You need to change my way
21:19of thinking, I think.
21:21Unfortunately, I don't see them getting much from this one with Charlton's form. A 2-1
21:27defeat, unfortunately.
21:29That'd be an all right result, wouldn't it, 2-1, Mark, if they showed a bit of fight?
21:33I think any defeats are a bad result now. What they do need to do is improve their performances,
21:39absolutely. The fans can see because the last two just haven't been good enough. I don't
21:44know. Charlton weren't in the best form when Crawley beat them in early December. I think
21:50it was me and you were there, weren't we, Sam, that night when they beat Charlton and
21:54told us you won me his goal that night and Max Anderson scoring the win. It was a really
21:58amazing occasion. And again, if Crawley can somehow channel that night, I think Tuesday
22:04night, under the lights, I know Charlton haven't got to travel that far, but I'm going for
22:10a Crawley win. I'm going 2-1. Come on, Crawley!
22:13Blimey! Steve, what do you think of that and what do you think Crawley are going to do
22:16against Charlton?
22:17Crawley 3, Charlton 0. It's going to be the turning point.
22:22Go on, Steve Bones!
22:24People have put too much science into these predictions sometimes. Well, Mark hasn't.
22:30League One, very unpredictable. You only have to look at the tables. There's some good
22:33sides down the bottom and there's some average sides near the top. I'm not saying Charlton
22:37are an average side. They're obviously in a good run of form, but I just think at some
22:40point Crawley are going to turn this round. They've had some good home wins. I think that's
22:43going to be another one, and they're then going to go on a run of about four wins out
22:46of five to give themselves a bit of hope.
22:48We'll see. Well, best of luck to Crawley, although I don't think Crawley need the luck
22:52if they've got Steve Bones back in. It's in the bag against Charlton.
22:56We'll see.
22:58Thank you very much for joining us, chaps, and thank you very much for joining us, Steve.
