Did the Patriots do former HC Jerod Mayo "dirty"? CB Christian Gonzalez says so. Do you agree with Gonzalez? #NFL
Transcript
00:00Over to football here, Greg. Christian Gonzalez appeared on the Frat Rules podcast,
00:05um, and, uh, he was asked about Gerard Mayo, interestingly enough,
00:10and had this to say about his former coach.
00:13Did you like him as a coach?
00:14I did.
00:15Yeah, he was a good coach.
00:15I think they did him a little dirty, giving him only one year.
00:18But, you know, that's the front office's responsibility. You just ball.
00:24Yeah, we're gonna see what Braves do.
00:26You still got the same DC up there?
00:28No, the whole new coaching change.
00:29It's a whole, they did in their clean house.
00:32And then when Bill left, they did the same thing? Or it was?
00:34No, when Bill left, it was, it was basically the same staff, just without Bill.
00:40Okay, so they did him dirty. They did Gerard Mayo dirty. I mean.
00:47That they did.
00:48Yeah.
00:48I agree with them.
00:49Is it a good thing, though, for these guys when they are going on these podcasts and saying
00:55the first thing that pops into their head, or is it a bad thing?
00:58But who didn't think that he got done dirty?
01:00I think, I mean, I, I.
01:03Beside you.
01:04Okay, besides me, I guess not a lot of people.
01:06Right, so everybody like, so him saying that is not like a shocking revelation.
01:12Do you think Gerard Mayo expected that he was going to be an extraordinary head coach in the NFL?
01:17I don't know.
01:17Not in the first year.
01:18Yeah, not in the first year. I think he probably was going to take his lumps.
01:21But do you think he expected that they weren't going to give him anything
01:24when it came to personnel?
01:26I don't think that they.
01:27Or staff.
01:28I don't think that they expected.
01:30That's a good point, Curtis.
01:31I don't think that they expected it was going to be the dumpster fire that it ended up being.
01:37How do they not expect that? When Curtis makes another great point,
01:42you went out and got Vrabel and then said, you know what, at the offense coordinator,
01:47let's bring back Josh McDaniels. Josh McDaniels was hanging around all over
01:51Massachusetts last year. Why didn't you bring him in?
01:53Do you think that they expected that with Gerard Mayo as the head coach,
01:57there were going to be D list wide receivers declaring that they had the best hands in the NFL
02:05publicly and and questioning why the offense was being run the way the offense was being run?
02:11Do you think that they thought they were going to have guys that were in jolly old England
02:16out enjoying too much shepherd's pie at 1 a.m. and sick?
02:21Yeah, but Greg, Gerard Mayo's first practice basically was on the fields in front of the fan
02:28base, and they allow Matthew Judon to dress him down in front of everyone. Something unlike the
02:34Devers comments, that was predictable. They allowed it or he allowed it.
02:40What? Matthew Judon got in his face and was screaming out.
02:43Bill Belichick would have sent them home and shipped them off the next day.
02:48That's Bill Belichick.
02:49That's Gerard Mayo. If you're going to be a head coach in the NFL,
02:54you shouldn't need to have your hand held.
02:56Do you think Gerard Mayo thought going into it that they weren't going to add any playmakers
03:02to the offense or they were just going to ride with a bunch of rookies?
03:05And he thought they were going to spend a lot of money. I also think it's crazy
03:08if you take into consideration that a lot of reports were that Kraft wanted Rabel
03:13two years ago and that there was talk about that. Then they bring in Mayo. They almost give
03:17Rabel on a silver platter the success that you would want in your first year head coach.
03:26Gerard Mayo having such a terrible season last year, now you bring in Mike Rabel.
03:30There's only one way to go when it's up.
03:32Do you think that Gerard Mayo thought going into it goes,
03:35oh, if Drake May is the better guy and we want to start him,
03:38that I'm going to have to fight an uphill battle to start him in week one?
03:42I don't believe that the decision to fire him after one year had much to do with the record
03:48at all. I think it had everything to do with all of the off field stuff that went on and the lack
03:56of control that he had over the locker room and the players. And then the final straw was that
04:03the guy went out and denied us the opportunity to have the number one pick, which I will never
04:08forgive him for. Do you think they set him up for success though? I mean, I, uh, I set him up
04:14for success. Like, I mean, he's gonna, he wants to be a head coach in the NFL. He needs to set
04:18himself up for success, but how can you set yourself up when they're not giving you the
04:21coaching staff or they're not allowing, they gave him the job without, with virtually no experience.
04:27Right. That's right. That's not doing somebody 30 that's doing somebody a favor.
04:32If you give someone a job, Greg, if you give someone a job without experience,
04:37then you do what they did with the Rams and you bring in Wade Phillips. You bring in people who
04:41I think have a big role. I've never been in the NFL, never played in Rivers. We were good,
04:45but not quite that, that would, the coordinators play a role in keeping guys in line. They do the
04:51job of the head coach. So the head coach doesn't have to be everywhere. They gave Gerard Mayo,
04:57the same roster. Basically they had the year before and they precluded him from playing the
05:03most important player from week one, because the organization said it was a slow play and
05:09Mayo bought in because he was told from day one that this was a long-term plan, that it was a
05:15year early and that Robert Kraft trusted him completely. And then they take the legs out
05:21from under him. The second they start losing, there's whispers about Mayo and over the summer
05:25and Bedard reporting this and Robert Kraft at no point empowered him. I don't think Gerard Mayo
05:30with everything working is a great coach. I'm not saying he's, you know, Vince Lombardi. I'm just
05:36saying that it is, I don't think you can argue that the Patriots did them dirty last year. I
05:39just don't think it's an arguable point. Here's your Bentley with no wheels.
05:47So Christian Gonzalez says that the Patriots did Gerard Mayo dirty. And what do you say? We'll see
05:54how Vrabes does. That's a good way to start things off with the new boss. Vrabes.
