Pats HC Jerod Mayo joins for 'Mayo Monday'! What's Mayo's thoughts on this offense right now? Is there a turnover concern? As of right now, is Jacoby Brissett still the starter? Could that change?

00:00Good morning, Coach.
00:00Good morning.
00:01How are you?
00:02We're doing great.
00:03How are you?
00:04I'm doing all right.
00:05Yeah.
00:05Yeah.
00:06Long flight back, but we're here.
00:07You watched a lot of film on the flight back?
00:09Watched a lot of film.
00:10I was up.
00:12Did you see the same thing we saw?
00:13Absolutely.
00:15Look, I saw one phase of our game.
00:17Special teams go out there and play well,
00:19and the rest of us stunk it up.
00:20You know, we go into these games, stop reading my screen.
00:23Get out of here.
00:24You're being nosy.
00:24Yeah, Wiggy's looking at my house.
00:26Wiggy's looking at your game, though.
00:28You all over my shoulder.
00:30I hustle.
00:30I'm just trying to, you know, get you know what I'm saying.
00:33You should come in here prepared.
00:34I'm not reading it.
00:35It's like when you play Cod, man.
00:36What's he sly about?
00:37No Cods are looking at me, man.
00:38Big Eyes is looking at my favorite people.
00:40No Cods looking at me.
00:41You used to cheat in school, huh?
00:42No, no, no.
00:44I'm not cheating if it's looking at me.
00:45You were that guy like, you need to stand up.
00:47You have to have it looking at me.
00:49That's on you.
00:49I'm my favorite.
00:50He's a cheater, and he does not come prepared.
00:53But we love him anyway.
00:55But what I would say, like I said,
00:57special teams play well offensively, you know,
01:00and defensively, we just didn't hit our targets.
01:02And we talk about, you know, what are the targets,
01:04especially against a good team like San Fran?
01:06They're a good team.
01:06I know, you know, they're dealing with injuries,
01:08but that's a they have good depth
01:10and they have good players on all sides of the ball.
01:13And we just didn't go out there and do it offensively.
01:15We still turned the ball over.
01:16We started slow coming out of the gates defensively.
01:19You know, we still let the quarterback outside.
01:22We still let some of those runs get outside.
01:23And you guys have heard me say it time and time again.
01:26I use this platform and any other media platform
01:29also as a way to communicate with the players.
01:31I know they read the stuff.
01:32Look, fellas, we got to set the edge offensively.
01:36We got to protect the quarterback.
01:38And like I said, special teams did well.
01:40So I will say this, though, like,
01:44you know, in the Jets game, not to look back,
01:46you know, we were kind of flat, kind of tired.
01:48The guys, we had a good week of practice.
01:50The guys had a lot of energy going into the game ready to go.
01:54So I don't think I don't want to.
01:56I know the outcome wasn't what we wanted it to be.
01:58But I will say the process during the week, the guys seem pretty locked in.
02:02Ramond Ray Stevenson, fourth fumble in four games.
02:05You're talking about protecting the ball.
02:07Certainly something that, you know, you don't want to see that happen.
02:09That's right. That's right.
02:10Look, I think, you know, as far as this team is concerned, our identity,
02:14you know, we got to be able to run the ball
02:16and we got to be able to stop throwing and play good special teams.
02:18Like, that's what we have with this team right now.
02:21We cannot we cannot go out there
02:23and expect to win games if we're going to turn the ball over.
02:27You know, you can't win until you stop, you know, stop and lose.
02:29And then that's my message for the guys going forward.
02:32When you look at Jacoby Brissett, what did you see on the pick six?
02:35Um. You know, it's
02:40there were guys that were open or a couple of guys that were open.
02:44I just think it was a bad throw.
02:45And I'm not sure, you know, you know, the protection and things like that.
02:48Those always come into play, even if the quarterback's not getting touched.
02:51It was just a poor decision.
02:53Gerard, it was a poor throw.
02:55We're fans of this team. I'm a fan of this team.
02:59So when I sit here and I watch the game week in and week out
03:02and then I look at especially at the pass and offense worse than the NFL.
03:06And I know you always talk about, hey, it's a competition.
03:10When do you get to the point where you say, OK, maybe the guy
03:14that we're going with isn't giving us what we need?
03:17Because statistically, we're not able to get the job done,
03:21that we have to go to whoever the guy is behind them
03:25to see if he can give us a spark and maybe change things.
03:28Look, every week and, you know, I do talk about competition.
03:31We evaluate things every single week.
03:34I think the hard part about it, look, all the fans, you guys in here, media,
03:38they want to see a top, you know, you know, the third overall pick play.
03:42And I understand the frustration from the fans.
03:45I understand the frustration from you guys in here.
03:48What we're doing is what we think is best.
03:50What I'm doing is what I think is best for the Patriots today
03:53and also in the future.
03:54And that's all I have to look at these things.
03:56You guys look at these things as, you know, on a week to week basis.
03:59I think there's a combination of multiple things that I have to deal with.
04:04We do look at that.
04:05And fans, you know, it's interesting.
04:06We did a poll this morning.
04:07Fans are right down the middle on whether they want to see
04:11Drake May this week or not.
04:13Can you give us, if there is a reason, a specific reason
04:18or several reasons why not this week?
04:21You know, is it are you worried about him getting hurt?
04:24That's that's an argument that is made because of the situation with this line.
04:28Are you worried about doing damage to him mentally?
04:33If he gets in there, I can't give you just one specific reason.
04:36There are a multitude of things that multitude of factors that I take into account.
04:41But when you have to think of the future
04:42and you look at the young guys that are on this team,
04:45doesn't it worry you that maybe Drake and these young guys
04:49don't won't have a season under their belts going forward?
04:52Like there will be a learning curve after these guys work with Jacoby
04:56Brissett so closely in game action to then go to Drake May.
04:59Wouldn't you like to see them learn together and come up together for the future?
05:04And that's part of that's part of the things that we talk about all the time.
05:08And I would say even Drake staying after practice,
05:10throwing with some of the younger receivers,
05:12trying to build that chemistry has definitely been good.
05:15I think we have a good nucleus, you know, going forward.
05:17Obviously, we still have to continue to always look for ways to get the roster better.
05:22But once again, I understand your frustration, like whether he plays,
05:25you know, eight games before or whatever it is.
05:29We came into the season with a plan and we're going to execute that plan,
05:33knowing that we'll take our bumps and bruises along the way.
05:35Yeah. What are you what was that plan?
05:39Because you bring that up a lot.
05:40No, because you guys you guys were bringing that up a lot.
05:43Like, why isn't this? Yeah, this goes back to training camp.
05:45Like, I feel like you guys brought it up.
05:47Not this place in particular.
05:49You know, we sat in here and said during training camp,
05:52like Drake's getting better, Drake's getting better, Drake's getting better.
05:56You know, and so and then, you know, Jacoby's out there and it's like,
05:59well, why isn't Drake playing like he's getting better?
06:01We have a plan. We're going to stick to it, even though you guys said.
06:04And once again, I'm not saying you guys, you know, it's fine.
06:07You know, you said that he said he you said he outplayed Jacoby
06:11by the end, by the end of training camp, he did.
06:12Yeah. So by the end of training camp.
06:14And so, yeah, I understand what people saw there.
06:16But from I would say from my perspective, look, he did outperform
06:21Jacoby by the time we got to the end of camp.
06:24What we had to do was go into the regular season, knowing that, look,
06:28who gives us the best chance to win right now?
06:30And so just because you're trending better in a certain way,
06:33it doesn't mean you outperform from a holistic standpoint,
06:36talking about the spring all the way through training camp.
06:38Gerard, I thought, you know, from the day you were hired
06:41by Robert Kraft in that press conference, the buzzword was collaboration.
06:46And then this week as they're getting ready for the San Francisco 49ers
06:51Sunday morning, Ian Rappaport has Drake May is weeks away.
06:56Build up this week from the players and the coaches on your staff
07:00was Drake Mays really wowing people in practice.
07:04He's playing great.
07:05What's the purpose?
07:06Are you on board with that messaging?
07:08Who gives that information to Ian Rappaport?
07:10It feels like there's we're back to the conflicting reports from last year.
07:13Well, well, I'm not sure who everyone in the media.
07:16And remember, I used to work in the media, too.
07:17So I'm not sure who the sources are leaks or where they're getting
07:21their information from.
07:23The only thing I'm concerned about are the people inside these these walls.
07:26Look, once again, if the coaches go out there, I mean, the coaches went out
07:29there and said Drake has done well in practice. True.
07:32Does that mean he's ready for, you know, to start a football game?
07:36I mean, that's that's those are the conversations that we have as as a staff
07:39and including Elliott.
07:41Speaking of collaboration, if you if you wanted to go out,
07:45go go to do your business today and say Drake May is going to be the starter.
07:50Would you be able to do that?
07:51Or is that is a collaborative decision with you and Elliott?
07:55It's it's ultimately my decision.
07:56It's you and it's me. It's 100%.
07:58And so, yeah, you can talk crap about me.
08:01I'm doing what I think is best going forward.
08:02Yeah, I would never talk.
08:04No, it's not. It's actually to your face.
08:06No, but it is fine.
08:08And I would say we've anticipated like I anticipated
08:11that we're going to take our bumps and lumps of, you know,
08:13whether it's through the media or whether it's through, you know,
08:15even my own mom asking me, hey, what's going on?
08:17I'm like, Mom, just
08:19do you want some inside?
08:20She wants some inside info.
08:22Is she a gambler?
08:23I mean, I know she's not a gambler.
08:26Do the crafts have a say?
08:28Does Robert come to you?
08:29Does Jonathan come to you?
08:30Thunder and Jonathan, you know, and I appreciate them,
08:34you know, throughout this entire season in the process.
08:36They really leave the football decisions to Elliott and myself.
08:39So it's been good.
08:40Gerard Mayo is our guest.
08:42One second.
08:42Oh, he's trying to jump in.
08:45Well, he's going to try to read your sheet.
08:46I know what he's going to go right back.
08:47Go ahead. Go ahead.
08:48No, no. I was going to say this.
08:49I was going to say if, you know,
08:52worse came to worse and you had to play him for whatever reason.
08:56Where is your confidence level?
08:58Where is the coaching staff's confidence level?
09:00And do you guys feel like he's ready to go mentally?
09:03He'd be ready to stand in there and be physically ready
09:06to take on the bumps and bruises.
09:08Is he in that position?
09:09If, God forbid, knock on wood, something were to happen to Brissette,
09:13would you guys feel comfortable with putting him in there?
09:16Well, that's why he's the backup quarterback.
09:20You know what I would say?
09:21He's still a rookie quarterback.
09:22And for us to now start to put all this pressure on him,
09:25like if, you know, dealing at hypotheticals, that's what we're doing.
09:28That's what we're doing.
09:30We're dealing in hypotheticals.
09:32Look, he's a rookie.
09:33He's going to take his bumps and bruises along the way as well.
09:35And so when you guys say, you know, just throw him out there.
09:38Yeah, I understand that part of it.
09:40But at the same time, I mean, it's not like a
09:44night coming in, saving the world.
09:46Just all of a sudden, it's still going to be these conversations.
09:49At halftime, you told the broadcast team that there were communication issues.
09:54What does that mean from your perspective?
09:56No, just communication issues, just as far as, you know,
09:59a lot of calls have different calls within those calls.
10:03Sounds crazy.
10:04But based on the formation and things like that, just being able to check calls
10:07and we've got to do a better job.
10:09But we had some injuries.
10:10We had some injuries during the game as well that, you know,
10:13we always talk about the next man up.
10:15But the communication has to remain consistent
10:18and everyone has to be on the same page.
10:19Any update on David Andrews?
10:21Not yet. Not yet.
10:22So those guys will be here.
10:24So we got in this morning around four o'clock or something like that.
10:26They'll be in here this morning.
10:27Excuse me, with their, go ahead.
10:29To get on a flight, though, after an injury like that or an injury prone game
10:33where you've got three big guys who go down,
10:35that must be hard to then deal with the injury throughout the flight.
10:38But then does that hurt you when considering when to play Drake?
10:41Does that put you back a bit where you say, wait a minute?
10:43No, now we've got these veteran guys like David Andrews going down.
10:47It could hurt the protection of the quarterback.
10:49No, you know, the thing is, once again,
10:52the development of this team that we want to win right now in the short term.
10:55But at the same time, we have to take that into consideration.
10:58And I would say it really doesn't doesn't play into it too much.
11:01Kendrick Bourne traveled with the team.
11:03Is he about ready to go? Yeah.
11:06There's a nugget for you, isn't it?
11:08Yeah, he's ready.
11:09Yeah, he's about ready to go. OK, so maybe this.
11:11And I thought it was good.
11:12I thought it was good to bring him on a trip just to, you know,
11:15get back into the routine and the process of being on an away trip.
11:18Not to go back to a bumpy moment with the.
11:21But let him read this. Let him read this.
11:22Go ahead. Read your read your advertisement.
11:25Oh, no, no, no. I don't have.
11:27Oh, I'm looking at my extensive list of questions, right?
11:31That's actually the menu at Dunks, right?
11:35But the team is 50 million or so under the cap right now.
11:39They have about as much cap space as any team in the NFL.
11:42Why is there not been more investment?
11:44I know that you guys guys working hard, but the offensive line
11:48is struggling even when healthy.
11:51It feels difficult from my perspective to see a successful rebuild
11:54if you're not able to have the foundation of the line
11:56to protect whatever quarterbacks in there.
11:58I would say philosophically, Elliot and I are on the same page
12:01where we want to draft and develop.
12:03Now, it's easy to say how much money you have.
12:06But if there aren't players out there that you really want on your team
12:09at that current time, you just have to you have to wait.
12:12And this past week, this past free agency, we felt like we signed,
12:16you know, the top offensive lineman.
12:17He just happened to be on our team.
12:19And I don't want to just say, oh, we got money.
12:21Let's go spend it frivolously.
12:23And I think Elliot will feel the same.
12:25Gerard, when when you look at your defense, I think a lot of us thought,
12:28myself included, coming into this season that that was going to have
12:32to be the foundation of the team you're having.
12:35It seems like past couple of games, a lot of explosive plays,
12:38especially in the past game
12:40where I don't know if it's like you said, communication coverages,
12:43guys just getting beat.
12:44I guess that's the biggest question is like, are these some of these guys
12:48running free? We saw Debo kind of run free.
12:51Is that man to man coverage where he just is better than the guy
12:54he's going against?
12:55Or was there some issues when it comes to communication?
13:00And why is it seems like for veteran defensive backfield
13:04that you're still kind of running into some of those communication issues?
13:07I would say if you look at the first quarter of the season
13:10and I don't want to offer any excuses or anything like that, but
13:14that's it.
13:15So, look, we have some players that are on the team
13:20that just haven't played yet.
13:21And I think the biggest frustration for me has been just in general
13:25is keeping the quarterback in the pocket in our early down pass rush,
13:28which I always talk about.
13:29It's easy to sit there and say in the back end, you know,
13:31did these guys cover or did they do this?
13:33But the marriage of rushing coverage is always important.
13:36And right now, I would say our early down pass rushes
13:39really been nonexistent and something that we have to address going forward.
13:42Now, even right now, you know, with Devereux going down,
13:45there's another piece of the puzzle where, you know,
13:48we just need guys to step up now.
13:49Well, we have some guys coming back soon, hopefully.
13:52We'll see how this week goes.
13:53But we just have to do better.
13:55We have to do better as a unit.
13:57And once again, you know, I preach fundamentals and all that stuff.
14:00And, you know, I think tackling tackling has been huge
14:04and also containing not only the run game, but the pass game.
14:07Maybe you got to get Joe Mizzoula back in those defensive meetings.
14:09Now, you know, look, I have 100 percent confidence in our staff,
14:15not only defensively, but just across the board.
14:18And we just you know, we just have to make sure that,
14:22you know, we've turned this thing around.
14:23It's it's hard. Well, good.
14:25I was just going to say, as of this morning, going into Miami week,
14:29Jacoby Brissett is still your starter, still starter.
14:32Do you think you guys need to add more stunts, twists, maybe free rushes?
14:36Can I just go back real quick?
14:37You know, when and when we say those things like, all right,
14:40this guy is starting as like we always, always reserve the right
14:45to do something else, no matter what the position is.
14:48And that's what and that's how I operate.
14:50And I just like I said, I'm always going to do what's best for the organization.
14:54Is that more to do with Drake Mays
14:56lack of preparedness than it does as a support of Jacoby Brissett's play?
15:00Drake prepares like he's a starter every every single week.
15:04And I would also say, you know, Jacoby, we can sit here
15:07and try to say how bad that is.
15:09But once again, there's a there's various things that show up
15:12that don't really support the quarterback anyway.
15:15And pass protection is one of those things that we just have to get better at.
15:19And I would say, look, look, even looking at yesterday until the end of the game.
15:22I mean, you know, you look at Bosa at the end of the game.
15:24Many really started getting it going.
15:26But there were times yesterday where the pass protection wasn't a problem. So.
15:31What about some chips on Bosa?
15:33Do you guys come into that with the game?
15:35Because it was a couple of a couple of his free rushes.
15:37It seems like, you know, maybe you could have sent the back over there
15:40a tight end or there's that.
15:42I know it takes away from the the tight ends
15:44and the backs get involved in the passing game.
15:46But was that something that you guys were thinking prior to it was
15:50anything worse than the than the offense guys trying to tell you how to play?
15:52No, no, no, no.
15:55We just want the chip.
15:56We just had offensive guys, defensive the chip.
15:58He wants the chip.
16:00I got that.
16:01Put a little barbecue sauce on the ribs.
16:02But what I would say is, you know, there are multiple ways.
16:06And you know this.
16:07So when you ask a question like that, I just want to go like this.
16:10Like, you know this.
16:10But there are multiple ways to take a guy out of the game,
16:14especially as a defensive lineman.
16:16And look, we can sit here and I said this last night
16:19on the you know, when I did my presser at the end there,
16:22whether it's through scheme, getting the ball out fast or through the chips
16:26or running at that guy, like there's so many different ways to handle it.
16:29And I would say, you know, he had some plays, but at the same time,
16:33not really on the sack train.
16:34But at the end of the game, he kind of took over
16:36the question of the week, the Hellman's Mayo question of the week.
16:40You can purchase helmets at your local Walmart or grocery store
16:43and add deliciousness and creamy flavor to your game day dishes.
16:46This football season,
16:48Gerard Grok said over the weekend
16:51that the Chiefs get way more calls than you guys did.
16:55As Patriots, do you agree?
16:58I don't know.
17:01I'm leaving that one.
17:02I'm going to let Gronk do it.
17:05I'll let Gronk, whatever Gronk said, he's probably right.
17:10All right. Anybody else?
17:12Once Drake May comes in, will we know the whole plan
17:15or is that plan just going to be?
17:16It's never free.
17:17Look, when I say transparency, it's what I allow you to see.
17:21I mean, and I am being transparent, but I'm not going to sit here
17:24and just say and give people everything.
17:26Yeah, we don't get to know the plan until the plan has been activated.
17:30Well, even is there like a giant signal?
17:32Is there like a signal that goes out like a bat signal?
17:35Like when it's activated, the plan executed.
17:37The plan executed?
17:38Well, I was looking on the paper.
17:39Maybe it was said that the plan is not on the paper.
17:41So the plan for this team won't be executed until we become a competitive
17:45team on a day after day, game after game basis.
17:47And so we're going through transition.
17:50We're going through, like I said earlier, it's it's fine.
17:53We got to take our lumps along the way, but we got to get better.
17:57And we will.
17:57Does it suck for you guys being so beat up when you don't have a bye
18:00week to the week 14?
18:01Like, do you take that into consideration at all?
18:03Oh, there's nothing we can consider there.
18:05Right. It's already locked in.
18:07We just need the next man up to be ready to roll.
18:11Gerard, you talked about tackling.
18:13Is it is it a lot?
18:15Is it a lot more difficult now with the whole new rules
18:18and everything to get the proper
18:22tackling drills in practice
18:24because there's so many different rules?
18:26And do you think that maybe sometimes that's why we're sloppy
18:31is we don't have enough time to maybe practice on tackling
18:35because of the new rules?
18:36Or do you just feel like?
18:37I would say all the teams are operating under the same CBA.
18:42And and even back when I play, even back when you play,
18:45when tackling was, you know, every single day,
18:48you know, the beginning of the season
18:50historically has been sloppy tackling as a whole.
18:53But it's something that we continue to get better at.
18:55You catch any of that Georgia, Alabama game?
18:58A little bit. A little bit.
18:59I was right. I kind of volunteered.
19:01I stopped. I stopped watching.
19:03And then I was I wish I could have watched the whole game.
19:06Yeah. Yeah. All right, coach.
19:07Well, thanks for taking the time.
19:08Appreciate this. All right.
19:10That is Gerard Mayo.
