Patriots Head Coach Jerod Mayo joins! Thoughts on lack of playmakers? Thoughts on O-line?
Transcript
00:00Gerrard Mayo immediately first impressions listeners spoke. They chose that Biggie song as your walk-up song
00:07Thumbs up thumbs up thumbs up on that. All right
00:11Post game you said that one hurt yesterday. Yeah, it hurt at the same time. Today's a Wednesday in our world
00:17We got to get ready to move on to the Jets, but you know overall
00:21I thought the guys went out there and they played hard. They played tough. They played physical
00:25We just got a you know, the end of the half and the end of the game obviously we could have been a better job
00:30There you talked a little bit postgame about being able to to push the ball down the field
00:35What does that mean from your perspective? Does that mean being able to throw the ball more?
00:40Absolutely. Absolutely. We have to throw we have to hit those intermediate portions of the field which right now we're not doing the run game
00:47Those guys are really taking control of the line of scrimmage, but we have to be able to push the ball down the field
00:52I'm not talking, you know, 70-yard bombs
00:54but the 20-yard in cuts and plays like that and not being able to do that is that in an O line thing is that a
01:03Jacoby preset. No. No, I think it's a it's a combination of multiple things and you know, our goal right now is this to get it fixed?
01:12Gerard when you look at your offensive line play for the first two weeks, especially
01:16You know pass protection because I think they're doing a tremendous job when you talk about running the football
01:21What how do you guys feel about them pass protecting
01:25Through these first two weeks of the season. I would just focus on yesterday. I thought the pass protection was
01:30Average at best I thought you know, they brought guys from different sides of the field, you know stars and Mike backers
01:36And you know, even when they rushed for they were able to get you know back to Jacoby and look
01:42You know as soon as it doesn't have to be a sack to affect the passing game
01:46I just bodies around the quarterback affect the passing game. So we have to do a better job
01:50You know just protecting Jacoby and you know, that's what the line and the backs and the tight ends as well
01:55It seemed like this week. He was
01:57Very accurate outside of the pocket and and throwing the football when running
02:01So I think that was from my perspective anyway better than last week from Jacoby percent
02:06He made some plays with his feet, you know
02:08He was able to extend those plays
02:09At the same time you don't want to see your quarterback having to run away from pressure and make throws all day
02:14You wanted to be able to feel comfortable back there and and make the throws that we need as a team
02:19His ability to escape though. Is that something that's just come with time?
02:23Having a vet at quarterback or is that something that Jacoby percent himself is just really skilled at
02:29You know, it does take time and Jacoby. Well, he's not the fastest at the same time. He has a good pocket presence
02:35But I will still say overall we just need to do a better job protecting them
02:38You said on Friday that you confirmed the reporting out there that Drake was getting
02:4430% of the first-team reps in advance of each week is
02:47That building towards something
02:50Soon, or are you just trying to evaluate his growth this year?
02:54Is there something that he's building toward and when he gets to that point he takes over is it reliant on other factors for me?
03:00I'm focused on I'm focused on the Jets and I'm not looking that far out and as an organization
03:05We're still a hundred percent behind Jacoby. Are you saying we're on to next week?
03:15I had to get that stress out
03:18Who's your favorite Peloton instructor, who do you like?
03:27It's the will this Matt Wilpers if you try to build a lot of endurance
03:32Greg on the Peloton and it was a great coat rack
03:35Actually, I I do the Peloton virtually we talked about that
03:41So, so let me ask this question because I know if you say get the ball downfield
03:46some of the things maybe that you guys might be looking into is
03:50To help out the offensive line
03:52Maybe some you know bootlegs move in the pocket a little bit because that will help those guys out
03:58Now knowing that every time the rushes rush
04:00They know that the launch point is not gonna be in the same spot all the time
04:04But we do that, you know, we have boots in our game plan
04:07We have play action in our game plan. And when you run the ball for 180 yards, I
04:11Mean we should have those intermediate opportunities, right? We're just not taking advantage of it right now from your perspective
04:17What happened on that Metcalf TD? Oh that I mean, we just got caught with our pants down. That's that's that's on me 100%
04:24You were asked that was a good call for them. It was good timing
04:27So I take responsibility for that
04:29You were asked after the game about that fourth and one and over time and you said that you considered going for it
04:34What was the deciding factor and not going for it?
04:36Just just a gut feeling I know that's the easy way out
04:40But it was just a gut feeling for me the decision obviously in hindsight
04:44It looks bad, but just in real time the third and five as you were driving to go up six or nine
04:51Depending on what you did there in the final drive of the fourth quarter
04:54Obviously Jacoby gets sacked. Was there a decision there? You regret not running the ball just trying to get closer
04:59Not at all. I'm not I'm not in a second guess that one
05:03I had some trouble later in that game converting on third down
05:07Yeah, is that kind of back to what you were talking about earlier?
05:12Which is that we need to find different ways to move that ball down the field
05:15I always tell the guys like you don't know
05:17When that play is gonna show up that we need it
05:20And so every play has to be a hundred percent and well executed for us to succeed
05:25Some of these younger receivers. I mean, we've we've heard about their great camp and everything
05:30What are some of the things that maybe you could do early in games to try to get them involved and get the ball in
05:36Their hands so they might be able to make plays and have a little bit more of a flow of the game
05:41As the game progresses, I mean that's part of it
05:43You know you you try to scheme up
05:45You've been around receivers that if you get them started early
05:47Then they're gonna have a good game if they don't get any touches early then probably be a bad game
05:52But what I would say is just you know as a part of the script is to try to get those young guys the ball
05:57Update on Juwan Bentley not yet. You know, we'll find out here at 11 o'clock that penalty on Jonathan Jones
06:03He being told on the saying that he was told on the field that it wasn't actually a penalty
06:07How frustrating is that for you if every play counts, especially I'm not gonna be critical of the referees
06:14But I mean that's hard. That's a hard thing
06:17You know when a referee tells you, you know, I messed up on that play and you know for us we just have to move on
06:24You brought up quick turnaround for the Jets
06:27What you look at Aaron Rodgers been in the league a long time
06:31What do you need to do against him from the defensive side of the football?
06:35I would say first and foremost
06:36It doesn't matter who we play
06:38We need to do a better job keeping the quarterback in the pocket and when we were letting the quarterback outside the pocket and you
06:44Know this past game, you know, he made plays with his legs now a rod. He's one of those guys
06:49He may not be as fast as he used to be but he's still mobile back there in the pocket
06:54So had to get some type of pressure in his face somehow and also keep him in the pocket
06:58When you when you look at your Kobe Brissett, you kind of early in the game
07:02I think he did a really good job of
07:05Getting the ball out of his hands quickly
07:07Managing the game. Well, are there times a point in the game when you as a coaching staff say hey
07:14Maybe take a shot here or you know, don't don't don't force it into a bad situation
07:19But be a little bit more aggressive is there like that yeah balance we have that we have those discussions on the sideline all the time
07:25and
07:27You know, I think at times we could be more aggressive
07:31And so we'll try to do that this week any clarity for us on the core for situation
07:36Was he just mad about being benched as he left is he it didn't it didn't sound, you know
07:41Look once again, I called chooks and we had a great conversation
07:45And I was checking on him just as a man first and foremost, we'll see what what happens today
07:50I know Elliot and his staff are on contact with with this team
07:54Jacoby looked like he got banged up a little bit hand or arm or even rib
07:58I don't know. He was wincing in pain after one of the plays D. Is he fine? Everything's good with him
08:04We'll find out, you know, once again, we have our staff meeting. We have our
08:08medical check coming up here soon, so
08:11Today's the Wednesday in our world
08:12Like I said, and so we're kind of pushing everything back a little bit speaking of injuries if you were to his head coach
08:19What advice would you give him? Yeah, you know, I'm I'm gonna take a page out of coach McDaniels book there where he said
08:25You know, he didn't want anyone talking about his quarterback. So I'm gonna pass on now a lot of passes. No, no
08:31No, no, there weren't a lot of passes
08:33I got another game
08:39Malcolm Butler was the keeper of the light keeper of the light. Could you let us know what happened when he didn't play in that Super Bowl?
08:57Awkward questions great. I don't know if you noticed Rod, but Bill Belichick is on 60 different shows
09:03And he decided not to mention the team in any of them. He avoided all talk of the Patriots. Was that surprising to you?
09:10Well, I don't watch anyone
09:17You know who is on with us every Thursday is Bill O'Brien, what do you think of the job?
09:22He's looks like he's doing they have a competitive team. I think he's doing a good job
09:26Yeah, yeah Gerard when you look at the way you're able to run the fall and run the ball and play defense
09:32Does that give you like because those are like the foundations that you always try to build your team on?
09:38But does that give you a lot of confidence week by week going? Okay
09:43Because of those two things we're always gonna be in games and we're always gonna have opportunities to win football game 100%
09:50That's how I say that we can run the ball and control the time of possession play good defense
09:54We'll always have a chance now in saying that we do need explosive place
09:58We have to you know, keep these defenses, you know on there on the hill on their heels, and I would also say
10:05defensively
10:06We got to be able to keep the quarterback in the pocket because they're only getting more and more athletic as a guy that played
10:11In them and now you're coaching in them as a general rule. Do you like the Thursday night games?
10:15Do you think that you can get your team ready? You said it's already Wednesday
10:18Yeah, it's actually Monday. Like are you a as a player? What did you think about him? And now as a coach?
10:22How do you feel to me? I love Thursday night games
10:24You know, it's like a mini by week
10:26after that game
10:27we'll give the players a few days off to reset and then we can look at our team as a whole from a coaching perspective and
10:33Really do just a major self-scout. You have a couple extra days to do that. What's a sorry?
10:38What's a short week like for guys like Gibson and Stevenson who you know?
10:42We're running pretty hard yesterday getting hit over and over again
10:45Like how do you protect them to make sure that they're ready to go on a Thursday walkthroughs walkthrough walkthrough walkthrough?
10:50so there won't be any padded practice or
10:54You know max velocity max speed practices. It'll be more walkthroughs just so we can get more reps
10:58All right
10:59Courtney's question was the Hellman's Mayo question of the week you can purchase Hellman's at your local Walmart or grocery store and add
11:06Extra deliciousness and creamy flavor to your game day dishes this football season. We like we need some deliciousness on Thursday
11:12Yeah, really? You really do you Matt? Do you have any like any pregame rituals that you could switch up?
11:19I mean, that's there
11:20Do you do the same thing? I saw you walking out on the field with a cup of cup of Joe yesterday
11:24Yeah, I do that every I've done that since I became a coach and maybe switch to tea. I'm not really I'm not really superstitious
11:32Look, it comes down to execution
11:35It comes down to everyone coaches players all of us being on the same page and going out there execute
11:40I don't care if I had you know, whatever lucky lucky rabbits foot in my back pocket or not
11:44Yeah, it comes down to execution. All right. Well, we were waiting for you to execute come
11:50Well, how do you feel? I know you get ready to go
12:14Well, they say
12:17But we're like
12:18You say self-evaluation. How do you feel like you've been able to do in these first two weeks?
12:24like what are some of the things that you learn from some of the mistakes that you may like just because you obviously yourself scout
12:30And every single day, where do you feel like you've been just through these first two weeks of the season?
12:35I would I would say we have a tough football team that can play good special teams overall using the first two weeks
12:41Play good special teams run the ball stop to run and you know when I look back on it
12:45I mean how we started to show we just have to be able to push the ball down the field and we have guys
12:49on our team that can get open and
12:52It's our responsibility as coaches to push it down when the schedule comes out. Do you do what we do and and pencil in?
13:00wins and losses
13:05Any given Sunday any given Sunday and no for you it probably was a bunch of L's
13:15All right, all right coach
13:19All right, that is drug mayo head coach of the New England Patriots
