00:00out Gerard Mayo and whether or not you need to reconsider at some point whether he is the guy
00:06to be your head coach going? Oh, very simple. We give Robert Kraft a hard time for telling
00:11everybody he decided on Mayo five years ago, right? Like, you still had Bill Belichick,
00:15they just won a Super Bowl, why are you talking about that? Why would we give Robert Kraft the
00:23go-ahead to do the exact same thing if indeed he thinks today Gerard Mayo is not the coach of the
00:28future? If he just keeps him because it would reflect poorly on him, wouldn't that be the
00:35wrong way to run the business? Especially if you have Drake May now who appears to be the guy
00:40going to have to wait another year until you bring in the coach that would be here for the
00:44foreseeable future. Well, Wiggy always goes immediately to the rookie coach excuse. First
00:53and I understand that. But what can you point to when it comes to Gerard Mayo so far this season
01:03that has shown you that you think he will be a great head coach? But how can you say that with
01:11any losing first year head coach? How could you have said that with Bill Belichick in his first
01:16year with the Patriots? How could you have said that? I wasn't doing this when Bill had his first
01:21year as a head coach in Cleveland. I wasn't in Detroit monitoring. I'm just asking you,
01:33what have you seen from Gerard Mayo that makes you so encouraged about him at the helm of this
01:39franchise? Well, I haven't seen anything glaring that I'd be like, oh wow, this is what have you
01:46seen? What has Gerard Mayo done? Which you say, all right, well, that's a guy that I have full
01:53confidence in as the head coach of the franchise for the next five years. There hasn't been
01:57anything really. But what have you seen to go? I would say a positive for him is I think that all
02:02the players do still play for him. I truly believe that. And anybody that you talk to within the
02:08organization says the way in which he handles players off the field with whatever they're going
02:13through or mistakes they've made. You look at that team and say they're playing for him?
02:19When he called them soft, they came out and they played the next week. I guess more so whenever we
02:25are critical of Gerard Mayo with a player, they're very quick to stand up for him. And I don't
02:30necessarily think you get that with every team. And I would say the argument on Wiggy's side,
02:35because I tend to side with Wiggy on Mayo as a general rule, I think he's gotten really dealt
02:40a crap hand by Robert Kraft and Elliott Wolfe. Go back to the way the Patriots blew doors two years
02:47ago of the Lions with Bailey Zappi. And Dan Campbell was a punchline. We mocked him mercilessly. And he
02:56deserved it. He was a big talking boob at the time who was writing checks his players couldn't cash,
03:03however they say that. And now he's the toast of the town. And so there are bumps along the
03:10way. And Bill Belichick inherited an eight win team and won five games in his first year. Gerard
03:15Mayo was likely to at least even and match the win total of the year before. And I'll steal this one
03:22from Curtis because you asked me, what do I see that makes me go, OK, he gives me like a positive
03:31outlook. What gave you a positive outlook last year from Bill Belichick that would make you say
03:39you need to keep him as head coach? I I'm fine with going down this road. That's not what we're
03:44talking about. No, no, no. But if you don't ask, but this is the most. OK, so you don't want to
03:49answer that. I'm not saying all right that Gerard Mayo is not going to be a great coach. I'm not
03:54saying that. OK, I'm asking you. OK, because the question came up and Curtis brought it up during
04:00his lead to tell me one thing that has really encouraged you about what he can be in the future
04:06and you're struggling to come up. OK, so then you tell me if you don't want to go to Bill
04:10Belichick. You tell me one thing that leads you that would make you say he doesn't deserve a
04:17second chance. I feel like at times he is coaching scared. So I feel like at times he is when it
04:23comes to a decision in a football game, he is not making the decision that he I feel like he
04:30should make if he were out there with with a vast knowledge of from a head coach perspective
04:40of the ways to win football games. I feel like the defense under Bill Belichick.
04:46Oh, don't go back to Bill. You was able to. You can't. You just said we can't go back.
04:50I'm not trying to have an argument with you. But you're right. What is it? What is it? And then
04:54you get I feel like I feel like he cannot. I won't mention Bill. I feel like he has not found a way
05:00for the defense to manufacture pressure without personnel at any time this season. All right. On
05:06a quarterback, they had nine. Do you agree? No, they had nine sacks to against the Bears.
05:10Oh, so there you go. Great. Great. Great team. Greg, what I'm not I'm not I'm not I'm not
05:14interested. I'm not in this to have an argument. No, but I don't know why you like you. I'm not
05:19insulting a family. No, no, no. Like what? I'm all I'm asking. Right. But you're very you're
05:24very high on the guy. No, you know, you're high and normal, but high on the guy. Right. Why?
05:28That's all I'm asking. I just told you why it's bothering. I think it's not bothering. No, no,
05:33it's not bothering me. What bothers me is that people always go. You included. Oh, he hasn't
05:40done anything. I'm asking you because you're so high on him going forward to tell me what has
05:46really impressed you. Why is that difficult? Two weeks ago, they had nine sacks. OK, so that's one
05:50thing that really impressed a couple of weeks ago. A couple of weeks ago, they look like they
05:55were headed in the right direction. They were playing better the beginning of the season.
05:58They were one of the least penalized teams in the NFL. There are a few things right there.
06:03That's all I was asking. I also think that if we not to go back to Bill, but to go back to Mac,
06:08there were a lot of times where people were arguing in favor of Max saying, well, I want to
06:12see what Mac is like when he has a weapon or I want to see how who Mac is, if he has a good
06:18offensive coordinator or a good quarterbacks coach. I want to see who Gerard is when he
06:23doesn't have a beat up defense, when he doesn't have guys injured like there.
06:26There's always ways to make excuses for people, especially in their early years of playing or
06:30coaching. And I think Gerard Mayo has that on his side right now. So when is he not going to have
06:35a beat up defense? That's that's everybody in the NFL. I think that this one, I think the Patriots
06:41defense was pretty banged up pretty early on. And I think that if you were to ask him, he always
06:45goes back to that. So I just I think that Gerard Mayo's able to get another season under his belt
06:52without people like, you know, want with pitchforks. But the thing about it that that like,
06:58you know, like it's not like it upsets me for the whole day, but just in the conversation,
07:02the thing that I have an issue with is people will say, oh, he doesn't deserve a second chance.
07:09And then I'll say, what what has he shown you that you go? This is the reason why this guy
07:14don't keep telling you things, you know, but you're not telling you said, I think they're very
07:18OK. That's a specific football thing. I think in general, they're a very undisciplined football
07:23team on and off the field. Undisciplined, undisciplined, OK, you agree, I would say
07:30at times, yes, but they have wide receivers all season long complaining about how they should
07:35get the football all the time, telling you that they have the best hands in the NFL and they
07:38don't. Right. They have guys that are getting in trouble off the field. Do you have do you have
07:43guys who are questioning the the the offensive strategy of the football team are in the public
07:49left and right? Yeah, that's it. And then do those same guys go out and commit penalties
07:53left and right? That's undisciplined. Yeah. Is that is that what that's like? Is that the job
07:58of the head coach? No, no, no. But that's the point. That's the case of most losing head football
08:02team. OK, I'm not talking about most. OK, so undisciplined, I would say at times they could
08:06be undisciplined. Are they one of the worst teams in the league when it comes to penalties? No,
08:10they're in the middle of the pack. So I think he's done a good job with a team when it comes
08:14to penalties. Have they create have they had some penalty issues these past couple of weeks?
08:19Yes. Off the field discipline, I would say other than the the Jabril Pepez and Christian
08:30Balmore situation, which he apologized about. Those were two issues. And the Christian Balmore
08:36all right. I didn't even have a real big issue with like he wasn't doing something that was
08:41so egregious where you like this guy doesn't deserve to be on the team. He did a dumb thing
08:45and let his frustrations get the best of him. And I mean, I would just ask of linemen who like up
08:51and quit, walked out, left. I put that more on Elliott Wolfe. That was the wrong acquisition.
08:58But I would just say if we all graded, you know, like my mac and cheese is probably the
09:03worst today. I apologize if we were if we were going to grade roster talent, just everybody,
09:09an impartial observer. You don't know what the team is. You just see the collection of players.
09:14Would we all agree the Patriots are at or one away from the bottom in terms of talent?
09:20Yes. OK, so if the team is the least talented team in the NFL, which I believe they are,
09:27then if they don't have the worst record, would you be able to say that their coach is the biggest
09:34problem? No, no. You'd say the roster was the biggest problem, right? Right. And that's what
09:39I've always said. He has been given a very, very difficult job to do. He is playing with one hand
09:47tied behind his back. And I blame that on ownership and the front office. So when you say,
09:53does this does this guy deserve another year? Yes, he does, because he wasn't given a fair
09:59opportunity with the roster that he was put in place with the same way we gave Mac another year.
10:06So that's where when people are like and I heard Jones keep talking about it, like,
10:09oh, he should get fired. He he's not an urban Meyer coach where it looks like
10:16the place is an absolute zoo. And you're like, I get this guy out of here.
10:21He's not like a Freddy Kitchens, who was a one and done. I think that Mayo deserves
10:28another chance. And the fact that we're talking about it is we don't know how good he'll be or
10:33he won't be. But one one and done. Come on. You got to give me more than they have some penalties.
10:40Right. OK. All right. Well, we know where you stand and we know where you stand. Right.
10:48You want him gone after this year? Well, I'm not sure that he's the I haven't seen a lot
10:53that shows me he's the right guy. So you would move. I think he's a very nice man.
10:56We're not talking about his personality. You would move on. Yeah, because I think you have
11:00a limited time with in which you have Drake may that you're not going to pay millions and millions
11:05and millions of dollars for him. It becomes what everybody thinks he's going to become.
