Patriots Head Coach Jerod Mayo joins! Mayo Monday! What does Mayo think about the penalties? What were players saying in locker room?
Transcript
00:00Morning, how are you?
00:01Someone with a small head had this on.
00:03It wasn't wiggy or anything.
00:05I got a big old melon.
00:07Full of stuff.
00:08Gerard Mayo is brought to you by Northeast Men's Health,
00:10the experts when it comes to treating the sexual health
00:13issues of men with five New England offices
00:15or at northeastmenshealth.com, by Land Rover of Norwood,
00:19by John Sewer and Drain Cleaning,
00:21the name to know when your drains won't flow,
00:23and by Hellman's Real Mayonnaise.
00:24You can purchase Hellman's at your local Walmart or grocery
00:27store to add extra deliciousness and creamy flavor
00:30to your game day dishes this football season.
00:33How are you doing?
00:34Doing all right.
00:35Yeah, it was a tough game down there in Miami.
00:39We just got outplayed, outcoached,
00:41and we just have to continue to get better.
00:42You take that game away.
00:43The last four, we felt pretty good about where
00:46we were trending, and this hopefully is just a hiccup
00:48and get ready for the Colts.
00:49I don't know what word you would use.
00:51We were using sloppy earlier.
00:54Do you feel like this team is playing sloppy?
00:58Definitely, when it comes to it.
00:59I would say if you take that game, yeah,
01:01that was a sloppy game, and it starts with the penalties.
01:03And look, the post-snap penalties,
01:05you can sometimes go back and forth.
01:07It's the operational penalties and the lack of focus
01:11that really frustrate me, and I know frustrate the team.
01:14Gerard, we talk about this every week.
01:17Like you said, it's those penalties that you have,
01:20the false starts, and it's continued.
01:22When do you get to a point, and I
01:24know it's probably difficult based on personnel,
01:26when guys do start messing up, where
01:29they got to be concerned about their asses being
01:31on the bench for the rest of the game
01:33and worrying about playing time?
01:34Yeah, and that's the hard part, as you continue
01:37to try to build a culture.
01:38And look, these are the things that we're not going to do.
01:41It depends on the position group that you even look at,
01:44whether we have depth at that spot or not.
01:46Or we don't have depth at that spot.
01:48That definitely goes into it.
01:49But it's unacceptable by all the players.
01:51So depth at that spot that you'd use?
01:53I'm just using just general position.
01:56Well, I would use it like Vidarian low,
01:57like somebody who ends up being penalized
02:00three times in that game, and certainly costly
02:03when it comes to where you are field position-wise.
02:07Do you have to look then back at the roster and say,
02:09we don't have the depth there at the position that we need?
02:12That's part of the conversation, not only now,
02:14but also in the offseason, where we do have depth
02:18and where we don't.
02:20We've been talking about already this morning
02:21about your comments after about once the guys
02:23cross the white line, there's really nothing
02:25you can do for them when it comes to penalties.
02:28And then you brought up the fact that you just need
02:30to prepare them every single week.
02:32Do you feel like every week when you're going in
02:34to the game that they are prepared
02:36to not make those mistakes?
02:37How do you make sure to up that as the head coach
02:39when it comes to practicing to make sure
02:41that this isn't a repeating issue?
02:43Yeah, I've always said in the media,
02:46even when I was a player that, you know,
02:48I should say going back to when I was a coach in 19,
02:51when I first started, is that, you know,
02:53once you cross the white lines, like it's your game.
02:56There's nothing I can do to do,
02:59like I try to give you the tools.
03:01You have to go out there with high awareness
03:03and execute what we're trying to do.
03:05I've always said that.
03:05And if we would have won the game,
03:06it looks like a compliment.
03:07We lose the game.
03:08Now it looks like a slap in the face.
03:09But if you were to ask any of those players,
03:11I say that all the time.
03:13There was a report this morning that as Drake May
03:16was talking to the press that there were several
03:19offensive players laughing.
03:23How do you clean up the culture where players
03:27don't find any sort of frivolity
03:31in a blowout loss in Miami?
03:33I didn't get that vibe in the locker room
03:35when I broke the team down.
03:36I told them how I felt about the game.
03:37I'm not sure, you know, where that report came from.
03:40What I will say is, you know, I heard like one person,
03:43I guess, low smile during a question,
03:45but look, that's him.
03:46He smiles all the time.
03:47Look, we're disappointed.
03:49We're all pissed off and we all understand
03:51that we have to get better.
03:52The report was from Mark Daniels though.
03:53And it was a few people have come out saying
03:56that while Drake May looked really affected
03:59by the outcome of the game,
04:00the offensive side of the locker room,
04:02a lot of guys were fooling around.
04:04It didn't seem like they were taking it seriously.
04:06And I think for a lot of people,
04:07when it's week in week out,
04:09you wonder if they've just given up on the season
04:11and that's worrisome for some.
04:13I don't think we've given up on the season.
04:14I would say, you know, the one, I guess, positive
04:17to pull out of the game yesterday
04:18is that they continue to play, you know,
04:20and going back to the penalties and all that stuff,
04:22you know, shooting ourself in the foot.
04:24Like, we have to clean that stuff up
04:25to give up 24 points in the second quarter.
04:27Like, we can't.
04:28It's hard to come back from a performance like that.
04:32And we just got to get better.
04:33Speaking of Drake, your thoughts on his game yesterday?
04:37I thought he did some good things.
04:39I was able to extend plays.
04:40But again, like the turnovers are, you know,
04:43they're hurting the team.
04:44And he understands he has to clean that up.
04:46And hopefully, that's part of his development.
04:48Are there some things, because I know you said,
04:50like, once the players step on the field,
04:52like, all right, it's up to them.
04:53But are there some things that you looked at this game
04:55and go, you know, maybe we could have doubled Waddle
04:58a little bit.
04:59I know it's tough because they also got Tyree killed.
05:01Maybe play a little bit more zone.
05:02Are there some things as you go back
05:04and you watch the film that you said, all right,
05:06maybe we could have did differently,
05:08schematically as the game was progressing?
05:10Yeah, I think you always have to go back
05:12when you watch the film.
05:13And, you know, win, lose, or draw,
05:15you always go back and reflect, like,
05:16what we could have done better.
05:18So that's, regardless of the game,
05:20we always feel that way.
05:21Jerron, there was a report last week
05:23that Marcus Jones texted Alex Van Pelt to let him know
05:27that he could play offense.
05:29AVP then said that he hadn't seen film of him on offense.
05:34I just, that's just unconscionable to me.
05:36How was that not something that entering the season,
05:40Alex Van Pelt would have looked at,
05:41considering how big of a playmaker
05:43Marcus has been in the punt game?
05:45Yeah, coming into the season,
05:46our main focus was first to get Marcus healthy.
05:48And then secondly, he's one of our starting corners
05:50and punt return guys.
05:52So, you know, we, you know,
05:53to spend so much time on special packages
05:56and things like that, look, he's our starting,
05:57he's one of our best players defensively
05:59and in the special team realm.
06:01And look, we've talked about it before.
06:03I'm not sure.
06:05Where do you wanna go from there?
06:06Well, he said on this radio station on Friday
06:09when he was asked about it, Alex Van Pelt,
06:12that the wrong guy was being asked.
06:14So does that mean that they were asking the wrong guy?
06:19So does that mean you're the guy
06:21that needs to be asked about that?
06:24About?
06:25About why there was no talk about incorporating him
06:30into the offense when he hadn't seasons passed.
06:32We've had those conversations as a full staff.
06:35And again, Marcus is our starting corner
06:38and one of the best punt returners in the league.
06:40And we have to use them, you know, use them in those ways.
06:43You bring up the fact that the defense gave up 24 points
06:46in the second, but then the second half as a whole,
06:49you guys only give up 10.
06:50What were the adjustments at halftime to make sure
06:52that you were able to control them a little bit?
06:54It just goes back to just execution
06:56and, you know, seeing the full picture.
06:58They hit us with a lot of motions and things like that.
07:01I would say the most disappointing thing
07:02for me overall defensively was just the communication.
07:05It has nothing to do with the first level.
07:07It's the second and third level who have to take
07:09that by the horns and make sure we're all on the same page.
07:12And we just didn't do that, especially in the first half.
07:15Now, I, not now, but I definitely owe you an apology
07:19because after, you know, watching Washington
07:22and Chicago, I might've been wrong
07:23on the whole personnel thing at the beginning of the season.
07:27Now, off of that.
07:28Just keep that.
07:29We never get an apology.
07:31Yeah.
07:32All right, just put it in my pocket.
07:33Yeah, save that.
07:33So for me, that was my bad.
07:34But off of that, do you feel like you've been given
07:39every possible tool to be successful as a head coach
07:44coming into this season that you thought you'd be given?
07:48Yeah, my thing is that we knew, you know,
07:50at some point in time, we were going to take our lumps.
07:52And I think, you know, it's easy for us to focus
07:55on this season, but, you know, as the head coach of the team,
07:58I have to think about every single game and also, you know,
08:01what we're trying to do going forward.
08:03And look, we'll get better.
08:04We'll get better.
08:05You feel like you should have been given the challenge
08:07on the waddle catch?
08:09I do.
08:10No, I know a lot of people, you know,
08:12probably said something about that, which is funny to me.
08:15It's a huge difference.
08:16It's a 15-yard difference.
08:18You know, there's a 15-yard difference
08:20if it isn't a complete pass
08:21while these guys are in field goal range.
08:22So I'm not sure where, you know,
08:25people kind of got confused.
08:26Well, there's, you know, everybody's a critic.
08:28No, I'm fine with that.
08:30But I just want to, that's, I mean, part of my job
08:32is to teach you guys football too.
08:33Do you hear all that stuff, the outside noise and stuff?
08:36I don't hear that stuff, but sometimes, you know,
08:38part of Stacey's job is just to give me a heads up
08:40on like what's, what are hot topics.
08:42And I know that's one of them.
08:44One of the things that is something-
08:45Did you think it was a catch?
08:47I'm not an expert.
08:49It didn't look like a catch.
08:50It looked like the ball was on the ground.
08:51I mean, so it looked like it was,
08:53like it looked like it was a good challenge.
08:56I'm going to say that to you while you're here.
08:58Then when I leave, you're going to say,
08:59that was definitely a catch.
09:00But when it comes to, what about,
09:01do you ever hear the criticism that you appear
09:05at times that you're coaching scared?
09:07Yeah, you know, I've heard that.
09:09Look, my thing is I'm always going to do
09:10what I think is best in that moment in time.
09:13Now, have there been times throughout the season
09:14where I go back and watch film?
09:16Like, ah, I could have did that better.
09:17Absolutely.
09:18I'm sure when you first started on this show,
09:20you're a lot better now than you were when your first show.
09:22Arguable.
09:23I'm just saying like everyone, like everyone,
09:25you know, they act like, you know,
09:27it's not a learning experience
09:29and that growth doesn't happen.
09:30Like when you write articles and stuff,
09:32I'm sure if you look at the first couple of articles
09:33you've written versus the last,
09:35I'm sure they're just a lot better
09:36for everyone here at the table.
09:38And I will be a better coach going through this adversity
09:40going forward.
09:41But does it upset you?
09:43Because Greg and I always go back and forth on this.
09:47And you, like you said, it is human nature
09:48to hear some of the things and talk about some.
09:50Does it upset you that you're in a position
09:53where you're always going to be compared to a guy
09:57who had been doing it for 50 plus,
10:00or however long he's done it,
10:02where you're in your first year as a head coach,
10:04and then there's always a comparison
10:06to Bill Belichick, the greatest of all time.
10:09Does it not upset you when you go home and say like,
10:11damn, cut me a little slack.
10:13You're my first year, I'm learning as I go.
10:15I'd never, I'd never look for slack
10:18and I don't really get into comparisons either.
10:20Like I said, it's the guys in, you know,
10:22in that locker room that I have to do a better job
10:25getting ready for games.
10:26You talk about yourself getting better
10:27throughout the season and moving forward.
10:29Do you feel like, Drake May,
10:30every single game has progressed
10:32even though they may have been losses.
10:34This game, it seemed like maybe he took a half a step back.
10:38Yeah, look, if we would have won the game,
10:40I mean, the whole narrative would have been different.
10:42And again, I don't think progress
10:44is like a straight line to the top.
10:46I think it's, you're going to have those ups and downs,
10:48but after you look at it from a longer viewpoint,
10:52as long as it's still going this way,
10:54it's going to be like this,
10:54but as long as it's going this way,
10:56then I mean, look, you'll be happy at the end.
10:59If you were going to jump ahead and look at the off season,
11:01what to you are the key areas
11:04where you need to look at improving this football team?
11:06We're always trying to get this football team better.
11:09That's too far right now for me to look ahead.
11:11Like my main focus is on this game and getting the win.
11:14So you can smile more.
11:16We'll do it.
11:16We all could use that.
11:17We'll look ahead for you.
11:18Absolutely.
11:20Yeah, Wiggy will look ahead.
11:21Yeah, wide receivers and maybe Max Crosby.
11:23I know he's a little disgruntled out there in Las Vegas.
11:26You kind of got us a tamper here.
11:28No, no, no.
11:28I'll just throw guys out there that I wouldn't like.
11:32I don't coach like Gerard said.
11:34I don't have anything.
11:35Well, you did one season.
11:36Guess what?
11:37Unlike Gerard, I was, you know,
11:41a lot of stuff was thrown my way that I did not deserve.
11:44Like what?
11:45You were not given all the tools.
11:47Yeah, I was not given all the tools.
11:48Like what's your-
11:49Well, I did not get to pick my own coaching staff.
11:53Oh, really?
11:54So, you know, I had-
11:55Wake up the bus.
11:56Zoop, zoop, zoop.
11:57Yeah, he's rolling over.
11:59He's rolling over.
12:00He's sucking over.
12:00Some of the guys that I did inherit, I believe me.
12:04I wish I could have removed them,
12:06but because it's a union thing,
12:08I have no control of that, Gerard.
12:09Did they talk about you on the radio afterwards?
12:12No.
12:12They definitely talked about me behind my back.
12:15Behind his back, they did, yes.
12:17Gerard, just interesting,
12:18because I feel like you may be coaching differently
12:22if you had pieces to sub in for guys
12:25that were making mistakes.
12:26Is that just a fair blanket statement
12:27without calling anybody out in particular?
12:29That's a fair assessment.
12:31Okay, Hellman's Mayo question of the week.
12:34You can purchase Hellman's at your local Walmart
12:36or a grocery store to add extra deliciousness
12:39and creamy flavor to your game day dishes
12:42this football season.
12:43We're in the realm of what if
12:45and what could be, what might be.
12:48So I'll ask this.
12:51Rodney Harrison, Vince Wilfork, and Adam Vinatieri
12:55are pro football Hall of Fame semifinalists.
12:58If you had one vote, who would be the guy first?
13:02Vince Wilfork.
13:03Okay. Wow.
13:04Okay.
13:05Because to me, he's one of those guys that,
13:07you know, he doesn't have all the big stats,
13:10but when you talk about the Hall of Fame,
13:11I think about dominant players,
13:13and he was a dominant player.
13:14Wow.
13:15Is he the only defensive guy to win both
13:17in the first part and the second part?
13:19Because he won in 04 or 03,
13:21and then he won again.
13:22Yeah, you're right.
13:23That's right. That's right.
13:24Only defensive guy that was part of both.
13:26And other than Ray Lewis, Rodney's the only guy
13:28to have 30 interceptions and 30 sacks.
13:30Yeah, all the players that you guys mentioned there
13:33are worthy.
13:34You know, you asked me to stack my kit, I'm going with Vince.
13:36Yeah, I like it.
13:38What's the week like with the holiday on Thursday?
13:40Yeah, I mean, look, we're working.
13:41We'll clean this up.
13:42The guys are in today and we'll be in tomorrow as well.
13:46Wednesday full pads, get ready to go.
13:48What do you got going on Thursday?
13:50I think it's Thanksgiving.
13:51Who's cooking?
13:52Not me.
13:54Hey, you a ham or turkey guy?
13:55I'm a turkey guy.
13:56Yeah, thank you.
13:57It depends what kind of turkey you're talking about.
13:59Not that dry turkey.
14:01Yeah, no.
14:02You like a fried turkey?
14:02Fried turkey or Cajun turkey.
14:05Oh, Cajun turkey, all right.
14:08Great, just woke up.
14:10You got me.
14:11All right, coach, have a great Thanksgiving.
14:12I appreciate you guys
14:13and hope you guys have a great Thanksgiving as well.
14:16I'm thankful for all you guys.
14:17Seriously, I am.
14:18And look, this is gonna make me better.
14:20Go ahead and, you know, you can question everything.
14:22It's gonna make me better in the future
14:23and I appreciate it.
14:24All right, well, I mean, you know,
14:26we try to do it in a, you know, in a kind way.
14:28No, don't do it in a kind way.
14:30All right.
14:31It's fine, it's fine.
14:32In a respectful way at least.
14:33All right, that is your odd man.
