Patriots Head Coach Jerod Mayo joins! How were the Pats able to mitigate the big plays from Caleb? How is the chemistry with Maye and the receivers?
Transcript
00:00Yeah.
00:01It was good to go out there and get the win.
00:03And I thought the guys really went out there and played well.
00:06You know, as a coach, sometimes it's all about just giving those guys the opportunity.
00:09And they went out there and seized that opportunity and controlled the game.
00:13Compliment earlier this morning on this show from Boomer Esiason who said,
00:17seemed like you guys put together the perfect game plan for this one.
00:21Yeah.
00:22So, you know, shout out to the coordinators.
00:23You know, the coordinators, you know, they work hard.
00:25And I would say the position coaches, the assistant coaches,
00:28they all put a lot of hours in.
00:29It doesn't always culminate to a win.
00:31But as I've always said, we try to get better each and every week.
00:35And that's not only for the players, but also the coaches.
00:38Jerrod, one of the things that really stood out yesterday,
00:40obviously, the ability to get to the quarterback and get sacks.
00:43But the ability to not have any off-script plays
00:47where Caleb Williams has done a good job of that this season,
00:50but making sure there were none of those that ultimately led to big plays.
00:55Yeah.
00:56You know, those off-script plays are always difficult to handle.
00:59And to have an athletic quarterback like Caleb, who I do,
01:02I said, it's after the game,
01:03I think he's going to be a very special player in this league.
01:05But to be able to contain him and keep him in the pocket
01:08was definitely a challenge.
01:09And, you know, that was one of the targets this week, and the guys hit it.
01:12Jerrod, it did seem like Drake and Booty have become this kind of tangem
01:16that's their connections really growing.
01:18So for you, have you seen that during practice?
01:21Or how has that grown?
01:23And where do you see that going?
01:24I would say with all the receivers, you know,
01:26that connection continues to grow.
01:28You have to remember, it's only been, I mean,
01:30how many weeks has Drake really started?
01:32So you'll continue to see that progress amongst all those guys.
01:35But Booty's done a good job for us.
01:37And he's definitely been one of those guys that has grown from, you know,
01:41last year to this year, and it's exciting to see.
01:43Drake has obviously taken a more of a vocal leadership role.
01:46We heard about that after the game, about addressing the team.
01:51It seems to me, from afar, that as Drake has assumed
01:54the leadership role in the offense,
01:55there's been less squawking by those on it.
01:58He's addressed the team?
02:00That's what they said on the broadcast yesterday.
02:02They said this week he was frustrated or, you know,
02:05or didn't think things were going the way it should have gone practice-wise
02:09and asked if he could talk to the offense.
02:11Is that not accurate reporting?
02:13No, he said the team. I'm just trying to figure out.
02:15Oh, to the offense. Sorry, the offense itself.
02:18Is there a correlation between Drake's leadership role
02:22and guys on the offense taking ownership of their specific roles
02:25without talking about others?
02:26Yeah, they all have to be accountable.
02:28And, you know, that's part of his evolution, and he's doing a good job.
02:32Gerrard, one of the things that we saw,
02:34obviously we saw some pressures from your second level,
02:37your linebackers, your cornerback, safeties, that type of thing.
02:40Was that something that you guys were going in with a game plan
02:43to kind of confuse Caleb Williams to, you know, have him see a lot of guys?
02:48And then at times you were bringing those guys.
02:50Is that something that was part of your game plan headed into it?
02:53100%, you know, and again, he's a very athletic guy,
02:56so our second and third level players are faster guys.
02:59In saying that, I would say our first level guys did a good job
03:02really collapsing the pocket.
03:04Speaking of Drake, you look at the interception,
03:07just clearly didn't see Edwards there.
03:10Did you use that napkin right there?
03:12It's hot in here, you know, in the wintertime.
03:14Oh, you need to—can you give him a napkin?
03:16Well, I used this one. I don't know if you want to put this.
03:18Like I said, I sweat so easily.
03:20Don't you work out right before—
03:22I try to until my body just stays hot, you know.
03:26What's the question?
03:27Interception, what did you see?
03:29Looking back, film, he just didn't see the linebacker.
03:32It was a bad play. It was a poor play.
03:33You got to throw that ball away and keep the score.
03:35Back to Curtis's question with the squawking,
03:37and obviously there was a lot of guys that were talking in front of the media
03:40and saying certain things about what was going on.
03:43Oh, good. Hold on a second.
03:45You got some Bobby Brown makeup?
03:48I mean, he's had grunt rubber shoulders before.
03:51That's nothing like he used to do to Bill, don't worry.
03:53Like he would never.
03:56But it does seem like it's quieted down.
03:58Guys aren't really talking to media or saying, you know,
04:02disagreements that are happening behind closed doors.
04:05Is that something that's come from you down,
04:07or is it just because you guys have gotten a few wins
04:09that guys have been happier, or—
04:11I wouldn't say there were disagreements.
04:13I would say, like, all these guys are competitors
04:15and want to win games, and those are all symptoms of losing
04:18when you start to hear griping.
04:20Or gripes. Is it gripes or griping?
04:22Griping.
04:23Both works.
04:24Yeah, both, yeah.
04:25You said this week you needed to get the run game going,
04:27and it seemed like you did.
04:29Oh, absolutely.
04:30We got the run game going, and I would say defensively
04:32we were able to control a lot of scrimmage
04:33and stop them from really running the ball, I think,
04:35with the average maybe under four yards a carry.
04:39I thought it was good.
04:40We handled the down guys, and I was impressed by that.
04:42I've done a lot of critique of the offense
04:44the first half of the season.
04:45I thought yesterday, first and second down were huge.
04:48You had 10 of your 14 third downs
04:50were less than five yards, or five yards or less.
04:52What about the game plan from Van Pelton,
04:54how you guys were able to be more successful?
04:55Yeah, it was all about first down,
04:56and I challenged those guys to what was really focused
04:59on first down, because when you look at the game prior,
05:01it was a lot of second and 12, second and 11,
05:03second and 14, 15, 16, all the way up to second and 20.
05:07And if we're able to stay ahead of the sticks,
05:08then that gives us a better opportunity
05:10to get in those third and three situations
05:12where with our backs, they still have to be able
05:14to take care of the run game.
05:15We were talking about Ramond Ray Stevenson
05:16earlier this morning, too.
05:17He looked awesome yesterday, and we were wondering,
05:19is it like he's gotten healthier,
05:21or is it just things have been clicking for him?
05:24Just as in the past when he hasn't gotten going,
05:27I would say it starts up front with the offensive line.
05:30I'm going to say the exact same thing here
05:32where he plays well, and it starts up front
05:34with the offensive line.
05:36One of the things that you talked about are like,
05:38you know, certain guys, you know, whether it's griping.
05:40The thing that I kind of take away,
05:42obviously, I'm not in that locker room,
05:44but I look at this, especially, you know,
05:47in the wide receiver room or just in the passing game.
05:51Every guy has a legitimate opportunity
05:53because there's no clear cut, number one.
05:56So if you perform and practice it in games
06:00and you produce, I feel like you're going
06:02to get opportunities.
06:04Is that what the message to these guys is?
06:07100 percent.
06:08It's always been about competition.
06:10I said that all the way back in training camp.
06:11It's about competition and who has that better week
06:13of practice and who has that better week
06:15in the walkthroughs and the meeting rooms,
06:17and that's what it is.
06:18Looked like you wanted a roughing the passer call
06:20at the end of the third.
06:22I did.
06:23But when you look at it, I mean,
06:25it probably was the better call to pick it up.
06:27Wow.
06:30No, but seriously, like when you're in the game,
06:33you know, I mean, that's part of it.
06:35That's part of, you know, you always ask me,
06:37what do you learn as a head coach?
06:38Well, sometimes yelling at the referee works
06:40and sometimes, most of the time, they're right.
06:44What have you learned?
06:45I mean, we're halfway into the season.
06:47Like, if you looked at things that maybe
06:49you didn't expect that you were going to,
06:51that you would have learned by this point?
06:55Every week is its own unique week.
06:57You know, I haven't had time, you know,
06:59because we haven't had a bye week yet
07:01and we still won't have a bye week anytime soon.
07:03I haven't had the time to take a breather
07:05and really reflect fully on what has happened
07:08up to this point in the season.
07:09But every week is its own week.
07:12Is it hard?
07:13You know, you always hear about time management
07:15and how many other things go into this job
07:18besides coaching.
07:19Has that been tough to adapt to?
07:22I mean, you know, travel, what the guys are doing.
07:27The travel part of it, this isn't basketball.
07:29Like, I just saw, I think, Golden State's on the road
07:32for, like, 12 days.
07:33Like, we travel one day a week, if that.
07:36And, you know, a lot of these are home games,
07:37so the travel part's not it.
07:39I would say as far as, like, just time management,
07:41it's all about football for me, which is exciting.
07:44And I love to do it and I don't really look
07:46at things in time.
07:47I look at it as energy.
07:48Like, where do I want to put my energy?
07:50It's not about time.
07:51I'm going to be here until 1 in the morning,
07:5212 o'clock at night anyway,
07:53so it's where I focus my energy.
07:55We've been talking earlier about possible games overseas.
07:59There's a game in Ireland, I guess Roger Goodell
08:01mentioned yesterday, next year Patriots would be rumored
08:04about possibly playing there.
08:05Do you think there's ever a chance that the NFL
08:07would have a team based in Europe?
08:10Or do you think that that could never get done?
08:12I don't want to say never.
08:13The game is growing exponentially.
08:16The people watching the game, men, women,
08:19different countries, it's a very exciting game
08:21and I don't want to say never.
08:24Time now for the Hellman's mail question of the week.
08:27You can purchase Hellman's at your local Walmart
08:29or grocery store to add extra deliciousness
08:32and creamy flavor to your game day dishes
08:34this football season.
08:36At one point, I think you guaranteed over four wins
08:39for this football team on this show.
08:43I know you're a goal setter.
08:45Did you go into this season for yourself
08:48setting a goal when it came to wins?
08:50No, for me it was as the season continued to progress
08:54that we are that team that no one wants to play
08:56at the end of the season.
08:57It was about getting better
08:58and I knew there would be bumps along the road
09:00and I think everyone knew that,
09:01at least inside the building.
09:02You guys probably didn't.
09:03Last time I was in here, Wiggy told me the rosters
09:06that he thought our roster was better than
09:08and he named all, you know,
09:09Kenton City and Tempe.
09:11I said Washington.
09:13I said Washington.
09:14Washington.
09:15He said Chicago.
09:16I said Chicago.
09:17Yeah, he did say Chicago.
09:19But that was going into the season.
09:21And you beat Chicago.
09:23Dominant.
09:24Yeah, but if you were to go back,
09:27and this is the,
09:28it's funny to me at this point
09:30because I've also worked in the media
09:31where you guys have to guess on all these things.
09:33If you went back,
09:35how many more hours are you guys on the show?
09:37You should go back,
09:38look at Chicago's roster at the beginning
09:40and how you felt about that roster
09:42and our roster and just do a side-by-side.
09:45I know you're not going to say it.
09:46Just like I told you, cap.
09:48But again, I would say we got a room for the guys,
09:51you know, guys that want to get better,
09:53guys that are hungry and I appreciate that.
09:55I know you're not going to say it,
09:56but it's my pleasure.
09:58It took you four fewer weeks to get to three wins
10:02than it did your predecessor last year.
10:04So well done.
10:05Three and seven.
10:06Bill was two and eight.
10:07You're dominating.
10:08Curtis is obsessed.
10:09You can tell.
10:10Hey, somebody's got to support the guy.
10:12I mean, everybody else here
10:13craps on Mayo all the time.
10:14It's fine.
10:15It's fine.
10:16Look, it's part of the job.
10:17Like you can crap on me or we could be undefeated.
10:20Still crap on me.
10:21I mean, that's part of the business.
10:22You're ahead of the curve
10:23with the greatest coach of all time.
10:24It's a good start.
10:26How often do you talk to Thunder?
10:30Young Thunder?
10:31That's Kraft.
10:32Every week you talk to him?
10:33Yeah, every day.
10:34So he's every day.
10:36Every day.
10:37Yeah, every day.
10:38I will say this and I've said this before.
10:41I'm appreciative of the opportunity
10:43to let me deal with the football stuff.
10:45But, you know, look, he's managed people.
10:47He's led people.
10:48He continues to lead people.
10:50And anytime I have a question about that,
10:53about situations,
10:54it's not always unique to sports.
10:56It's about relationships.
10:57He's a great resource.
10:59Does it feel like when you guys look ahead
11:01to the rest of the season,
11:02I mean, we have to because it's media,
11:04but for you,
11:05do you feel like you guys could be a playoff team?
11:07Seven games left?
11:09For us, it's about week after week after week
11:12getting the 1-0.
11:13And I think if we do that,
11:15get the 1-0 every week,
11:16then we'll be able to look back
11:18and wherever we are, we are.
11:20How do you make sure?
11:21Because I think it was Keone White
11:22who said that after the game
11:23there were some younger, you know,
11:24we've got a lot of young guys on this team.
11:26How do you make sure that they,
11:29the younger players especially,
11:31focus in?
11:32Like you said, it's week to week,
11:34but it's play to play.
11:36It's practice to practice.
11:37How do you make sure that they understand that
11:40and buy into that, you know,
11:42because it's completely different
11:44than what they're used to?
11:45Yeah, I lean heavily on the captains.
11:48And I would also say I lean heavily
11:50on guys that have played a lot.
11:53You know, my message is always one thing
11:55to the team,
11:56but it's the captains and the leadership group
11:59on the team to really disseminate that message
12:01to the young guys and continue to be that
12:03day after day, play after play voice for them.
12:07It's one thing to hear something from your parents.
12:09Your parents tell you not to do something.
12:11It's different when your brother
12:12or your sister tells you you shouldn't do it.
12:14But I do think, you know,
12:15just those multiple touch points,
12:17keep them in line.
12:18You looked at, it's interesting
12:19because you bring that up
12:20and we have this conversation all the time.
12:23Even though you're a former player,
12:25do they really like look at that element of it?
12:29Or is it like where I coach play,
12:32but he's the coach?
12:34You know what I'm saying?
12:35Is it that weird balance
12:36that you're trying to always kind of balance on?
12:38Do you feel like they sometimes see you
12:40as the former player
12:41or they always see you as like the coach,
12:43you know, where it's always the parent,
12:45not the friend?
12:46You know, that's a great question.
12:48It's probably I know you guys have players on this,
12:50on this, on this station.
12:52So that's a better question for them.
12:54What I would say as a player for me,
12:56no matter what level,
12:57I've always held the head coach
13:00and even the coordinators.
13:03It was, it was always like a reverence there.
13:05You know what I mean?
13:06It was always like,
13:07especially, you know,
13:08there was a point in time where,
13:09you know, single parent home,
13:11you know, for my stepdad and all that stuff.
13:12My grandparents would do the best job.
13:14My grandfather would do his best job,
13:15but where the head coach
13:16almost was like a father figure.
13:18Especially younger.
13:19And for all the young people listening to this,
13:22if you have a good coach,
13:24there's nothing better than that.
13:25It's not about, you know,
13:26when I see youth football
13:28and people drawing up double reverse crack plays
13:31and like all that stuff,
13:32it's like, that's not what it's about at that level.
13:34And I say this sport definitely teaches you,
13:36you know, how to deal with adversity.
13:38It teaches you how to be able to push through.
13:41It teaches you how to ignore all the stuff
13:43going on around you.
13:44And, you know,
13:45obviously at this level right here,
13:46there's a bunch of noise.
13:47And I would say the guys in our locker room,
13:49they are younger guys
13:50and they're also still developing as men.
13:54And I think it's very easy for us
13:56to really forget about them as people.
14:00And my message to them has always been,
14:03I care about you more as a person
14:05and all of our staff.
14:06I care about the men and women in there
14:08more as people than I do football players
14:11or chiefs or whatever it is.
14:14Speaking of parents,
14:15I'm guessing your mom didn't have much
14:17to criticize this week.
14:20My mom, she's, it's weird.
14:22I hope, you know,
14:23once again, I'll use this platform
14:24to talk to my mom.
14:25Now we lose a game.
14:26She doesn't even call me anymore.
14:28It's like, oh, it's like my joy.
14:30So you're hoping for a phone call at least.
14:33I am hoping for a phone call.
14:34I will say that she sends text all the time.
14:39It's just, you know,
14:40philosophical things or development things.
14:42And last week she talked about,
14:44she sent me a text on having a beginner's mind
14:47because the expert mind sometimes
14:49isn't as malleable,
14:50isn't as open to criticism
14:52or as open to growing and changing.
14:56And so having that beginner's mindset.
14:58That's for the people, yeah.
14:59Yeah.
15:00That's a good nugget right there.
15:01Great note to end on.
15:02Yeah.
15:03All right.
15:04Thanks, Gerard.
15:05Thanks, Hellman's Mayo.
15:06All right, Gerard.
15:07That's our sponsor.
15:08And we got, yes.
15:09Did you get the new Land Rover?
15:11Don't forget about Northeast Men's Health.
15:15But did you get the new vehicle yet?
15:17Did they deliver?
15:18Yeah.
15:19Okay.
15:20Thanks for making that call.
15:21I want to make sure you got that.
