Jerod Mayo's approach is much more laid back than Belichick's ever was. Will this new style work for the 2024 Patriots?
Transcript
00:00Mayo talked about what Judon said yesterday and Judon yesterday said a lot
00:05I mean he had a little scrum and he said this isn't I don't really want to play under this number
00:08I think I deserve more than this
00:10But you know, I signed the contract that I want to get traded and he spoke candidly and sort of honestly
00:15It was kind of you know for Patriots fans
00:17You don't you don't usually hear guys talk like that and not just Patriots fans
00:21I feel like most NFL teams you don't hear players talking like this
00:24Like this is all like everyone's like oh this never would have happened with Belichick around
00:28It's like I don't think this would have happened if Josh McDaniels was the coach or like, you know
00:32any other number of people I just feel like
00:34Gerard Mayo's letting him say whatever and he kind of reinforced that with his comments on Mayo on Judon actually listen to this
00:40Do you worry at all about?
00:42his concerns or his
00:45Disgruntled nature if that's a way to describe it right now. It might impact others on the team
00:50You know, we have a great relationship
00:52But I hate that you use the word disgruntled because I would say he's out here. He's out here working every day
00:57His attitude is great in the classroom. His attitude is great on the field and you guys see him flying around here
01:01Obviously there is a business component to this to this sport and he understands that you know, we want him here
01:07He's a very good player for us and he does everything that we want him to do. So
01:12Hopefully it works out. Does it undermine anyone's authority?
01:15For both you and Elliot are in new positions right now, and he seems to be very open that we're just not used to that
01:20No, no
01:22I'm good with it. I don't want to put a cap on you know, if the guy feels a certain type of way
01:26He has that privilege to come out here and tell you guys how he feels
01:29That's I mean, I have to respect it
01:30No matter what at some point in time
01:32There's gonna be a player that comes up here and says, you know, I hate coach dry
01:35All right. I hate Mayo and look that's how they feel and I respect that and you know
01:41I know we want to keep as much stuff, you know in in-house
01:44But there will be times where they come out here and express themselves and I think it's good
01:48Look, they listen to the interview here and I listen to their interviews as well
01:51Like I'm not talking to you guys. I'm talking to the players really and that's how I think about it
01:56You know as the season continues to progress
01:59I want the relationship with the media from the coaches perspective and also from the player
02:04Players perspective to be a good relationship and I'm not saying to write all the positive articles. I you write your opinion
02:10That's what you pay. Don't worry, Drew
02:12You don't have to tell them twice
02:14two things that I took from that
02:17One being I don't know what players gonna get up there and do that
02:23Player ever gone up in front of a press conference and said I hate coach whoever what is their coach?
02:28I mean really like that. Let's somebody else say it for them, but they're not gonna get up there and go
02:33Hey, okay. So what did you see on this play Jabril? Well, what I saw is that I hate my coach
02:41Not the question but okay and he's like, I'm sure some players gonna come up and say that you're sure a players gonna say
02:47That really like that's that's weird
02:50Yeah
02:53Expectations for the press conference is going forward
02:55the second thing I would say really quickly is I don't think that Mayo will be okay with that if
02:59They're at a point in this season when they're in a miserable record
03:03let's say that they're I don't know two and ten and they're sitting there and players are going up there and they're being as
03:11Transparent as judan was about his contract situation, but about what's going on in the locker room is coaching the dynamics
03:18That's what what they think of the positional coaches
03:22That I don't think that that any head coach in the NFL would be okay with
03:27Even if they're setting up a player lounge with PlayStation and starting practices at 11
03:32I don't think any coach would sit there and go well, you know, we're just working stuff out and I'm ready
03:38I've prepared myself for this. Yeah, I mean
03:41Listen, I think Mayo's really he's picked the lane his lane is I'm gonna be the player friendly coach
03:45I'm gonna have these guy. We're all gonna be friends, you know, they're gonna like me and respect me
03:49I'll respect them treat him like men whatever they want, you know, like this is this is how I'm gonna play this
03:53This is how I'm gonna start my career as a head coach, but I hear that
03:57I'm sure people are gonna come up and say I hate coach Mayo and I think that's fine
04:01Like that's going way over in the yeah
04:05Overcompensate I think he's trying to send a message and he says he's talking to the players the media and I get that but at
04:11the same time it's like and and I want him to do really well and I'm
04:17Nervous about this season, but I hear that and I go
04:20Mayo is still getting in front of the mic and saying what he thinks everybody wants to hear from him
04:26and it feels very much like he's being a people pleaser and a player pleaser and being the press pleaser and he wants to be
04:34But you don't I'm saying like he wants to appeal to everyone all the time and at some point it's got to be like
04:39Hey, man, like there's gonna be some tough moments where you're probably gonna snap on a reporter and you're gonna snap on a player
04:44Yeah, that's where I was actually gonna go where where he said
04:48I'm talking to the players through you all through the media and I just believe he's trying to establish a
04:55culture there of
04:57You know, hey what you guys feel what you guys think matters to me and we know there's a long history
05:04Here of that not be in the case. I also think
05:08Remember you always kind of tend to go to the opposite of what you had before right and we understand draw Mayo is
05:15essentially a disciple of Bill Belichick, but what I mean by this is
05:19Bill Belichick was rough around the edges with the media to say the least but players will always tell you
05:26Yeah, he was a tough guy, but he did love us up to he did show personality
05:31Bill was a funny guy. There were sides to bill that you all didn't see. I wonder if this is the opposite
05:36I wonder if Gerard Mayo
05:38With the media because I agree with mango
05:41It still feels like very much I'm trying to prove myself to you all as in us in the media
05:47It's like bro, you don't have to do that. You got the gig. This is your show
05:51But behind the scenes as we get into the season, maybe he will be a hard-o on the players
05:57maybe the players will see what we don't see out of Gerard Mayo, especially in the
06:04Instance that this team struggles this year, which we all think is likely, right?
06:08So maybe behind the scenes he is in guys faces. He is hard on dudes. He is cussing guys out
06:14We'll see if we hear those type of reports
06:17but it is interesting to me that that he is going that route in terms of with the media and
06:24I just think a lot of it is being green. I do I think this is learning on the job
06:29This is what it is. This is what it looks like just like we were talking earlier
06:34About the extension with peppers and he's like, oh, oh, yeah, I can't confirm that. I'm the coach like I think he's still working out
06:40Yeah, being the new guy on the game. Oh, yeah, that is me, right?
06:50With Belichick the players like had to earn his respect. I feel like with Mayo you're just the player
06:54So he respects you and he's gonna pay you he's gonna get whatever you want and you're gonna get to play video games in
06:58Here's Gerard Mayo talking about the new lounge
07:01Players lounge and their pool table some games. Obviously you came up in an environment when you're here to work and work only
07:07What was the reasoning behind that change for you? You know to me?
07:10It's a look this is their place and that's their lounge and that's their locker room
07:14I think it's important that you have those spaces one thing I've noticed over the past
07:18Let's say, you know five years is a lot of times when guys get a break
07:22They just go into their locker and they get on their phone
07:24They're scrolling through social media and there's really no interaction and I thought it was important
07:29I should say we thought it was important that those guys had a safe space to go and really like that's also a time where
07:34They build camaraderie. You should see some of the ping-pong games in there or some of the you know
07:38Some of the even the PlayStation, you know, we have a PlayStation Xbox in there as well
07:41But it's really to like bring these guys closer together and have those guys want to be here these days can be long
07:47But we just thought it would be important for those guys to have that space
07:51It's called ping-pong ever heard of you should see the ping-pong games going
07:56Okay. All right. Well, hey you sold me there Gerard. You got the ping-pong going
08:01I don't have any problem with there being a lounge
08:03I'm sure most teams in the NFL have some sort of player lounge or something where they all go after practice
08:07That doesn't seem like anything
08:09Revolutionary, but again for the Patriots
08:12It's probably something that Mayo when he was a player here thought, you know, like every other team has something like this
08:16Why don't we and I guess just it's sort of to me is sort of the the line here is between okay
08:23What are we doing? That's like every everybody else and then what are we doing? That's trying to set us apart from
08:30Even that like now now all of a sudden we're trying to go
08:33We're bending over backwards to placate all these guys who won four games last year and make them feel like they're you know
08:39The kings of the world. I feel like there's got to be some sort of balance there. It's a nice idea
08:43It doesn't matter
08:44It's a nice idea that you're gonna get the guys together and they're gonna spend more time around the facility and hang out and maybe
08:51Friendships will grow and blossom over that and in different positional groups
08:55When you work for a crappy company and they give you pizza Fridays
09:00Nobody gives a crap about the pizza Fridays like they don't want to be there because your company sucks
09:04You know
09:05like we've all been at that kind of workplace where you're like
09:08This is toxic and I hate it and I want to get out and if that's the situation that the Patriots find themselves in as
09:14A football team nobody's gonna be in that lounge guys are gonna be like, okay. I'm done with my treatment
09:21I'm getting out of here, you know, and so it's a nice idea. I don't think it shows that he's too soft to the coach
09:26I just don't think it really matters reaching six one seven seven seven nine seven ninety three seven
