00:00Keith, you ready for a victory Monday?
00:02Oh, I am! It's been a while.
00:04Actually, maybe I'm not ready. Maybe I don't know how to do this.
00:06I don't think I am ready.
00:08This is a weird place to be in.
00:10It's been a minute.
00:12I think a lot of people feel that way. How do I react to this?
00:14A lot of people don't know how to feel.
00:16I don't know how to explain my feelings right now.
00:18I think a lot of people don't know how to feel
00:20about yesterday. The Patriots win.
00:22It's a nice win. That's odd.
00:24Yeah, strange. It's been about seven weeks.
00:26Jacoby Brissett leads a game-winning drive.
00:28He's the Roll-Aids Relief Man of the Year.
00:30Very strange.
00:32Drake Mays hurts.
00:34Look great. Look real good.
00:36Then gets hurt. Don't break Drake, crowd.
00:38Told ya!
00:40We gotta deal with them, I'm sure, today.
00:42Which I'm not looking forward to.
00:44Gerard Mayo sneaky kind of blamed Drake May for his injury.
00:46Yeah, he did. That was odd.
00:48To steal your side of the street,
00:50the Patriots are 1-0 after their coach calls them soft.
00:52That's a good point.
00:54They responded to Gerard Mayo
00:56for being called soft.
00:58Or did they? I want to dig more into that here today.
01:00On Jones and Keefe, it is a Patriots Monday
01:02following their 25-22
01:04victory over the Jets yesterday.
01:06Their second win of the year. They're now number three
01:08in the draft standings, Keefe.
01:10Yeah, a lot of two-win teams in the NFL right now.
01:12A lot of schmucky teams.
01:14Maybe a winning streak with Tennessee next up.
01:16We'll get ahead of ourselves.
01:18Maybe. But maybe.
01:20You see that Tennessee outfit last night?
01:22I certainly did. Not very good.
01:24I've been getting thoughts on it all day long.
01:26It's 617-779-7937.
01:28You should feel good about a win today, right?
01:30Patriots fans, you should, I think.
01:32You can jump in again.
01:34On the phones, it's 617-779-7937.
01:36You can text us at 379-337.

01:42You can watch and chat, twitch.tv
01:44slash bostonweei.
01:46Already a lively chat. Yep, going on there.
01:48Hopping. Plus on YouTube,
01:50just subscribe to WEEI.
01:52We should feel good, right?
01:54We should
01:56feel good.
01:58Again, it all comes down to
02:00Drake May. And we thought winning some games,
02:02because you and I weren't of the tank to get the number one pick
02:04and go from there. We were saying, hey, win some games,
02:06build some good habits.
02:08And once they went to Drake May, I was thinking,
02:10Drake May is going to be the one
02:12leading a fourth quarter drive, potentially
02:14to win, or whatever, or playing really well
02:16and racking up some wins.
02:18This one was weird. He put him in a spot.
02:20He was on for the touchdown and had a couple
02:22decent enough drives.
02:24And then he comes out
02:26and they're still able to win.
02:28I do feel good about it, but I
02:30understand why you feel a little bit
02:32mixed. It's a little strange the way that the whole thing
02:34played out. I do think it's
02:36far and away the most important for
02:38Gerard Mayo. Gerard Mayo's
02:40seat had never been as warm as it was
02:42last week. We heard a lot of
02:44conversation last week. Will he survive
02:46the year and or will he start
02:48next year? And I was like, oh my god,
02:50I thought for sure he was going to be
02:52back next year, but it was coming into doubt.
02:54He called the team out, and then
02:56everybody between Bill Belichick and former
02:58players in the media, everybody
03:00pounced on Mayo for those comments. That's what we talk
03:02about all week. So for all the
03:04people involved in the entire Patriots
03:06organization, that win was the most
03:08important for Gerard Mayo. And I don't even think it's close.
03:10I don't think there's a second guy on that
03:12list that's like, yeah, that win really helped me.
03:14No, Mayo needed that win.
03:16It helped more people, but it helped
03:18Mayo by far the most.
03:20Especially a six-game losing streak
03:22in the NFL, things start to pile
03:24up, whether it's players, assistant
03:26coaches, the owner, whatever it is.
03:28It's important for everybody to get
03:30rid of that losing streak.
03:32You don't want to be the worst team
03:34in the league. We talked last week a lot about
03:36how when the year is up,
03:38how awful 1-16
03:40and even 2-15,
03:42how that looks, just on the standings
03:44and where you're at.
03:46But for them to get a win,
03:48throwing the fact that it's at home, it was
03:50pretty significant for Gerard Mayo.
03:52I do feel good about the win. Now, I'll say
03:54I would prefer it if it was Drake May
03:56getting the win and playing well and he's
03:58out there and you win because you're a young quarterback.
04:00I would feel better about it, of course.
04:02But I feel good about the win for what you just said.
04:04They needed it.
04:06This organization needed
04:08this win badly.
04:10They were a joke. They were a laughingstock.
04:12It was a national conversation.
04:14The coach called them soft. Bill Belichick called them out
04:16for being called soft. They were asked about
04:18being soft all week long.
04:20They got a second win.
04:22The whole organization
04:24needed this. Unless you want to
04:26turn back into,
04:28and maybe they're still trending there,
04:30early 90s Patriots. You're a disaster every week.
04:32Players getting arrested off the field.
04:34Players out too late beyond their curfew,
04:36which I know Mayo quibbled with on
04:38the Greg Hill show.
04:40Purely on the field. Nothing to look forward to.
04:42Games that aren't watchable every single week.
04:44Unless you want that to be the reality,
04:46which I don't. I never wanted that to be the reality
04:48with Brissette or with May.
04:50Unless that's what you want,
04:52purely for a draft pick,
04:54that's a good win yesterday. It's a win
04:56you should feel good about.
04:58Big picture, maybe, just maybe,
05:00everything
05:02with Mayo, the sideshow,
05:04the antics, all the
05:06things that we feared when the Patriots hired him.
05:08Maybe that was the worst of it last week
05:10and you can start to dig out of it
05:12because you got a win. So even just
05:14long-term big picture, maybe
05:16it's a sign that Gerrard Mayo,
05:18A, can survive the year and B,
05:20can still lead these guys.
05:22The organization needed it. So I do feel good about
05:24the win. But there's obviously stuff we can
05:26nitpick in that game. The receivers
05:28were terrible.
05:30I think the, and look,
05:32Keyshawn Booty had a couple of big catches late.
05:34To save the day, I guess, but the receivers
05:36were terrible. Terrible.
05:38I thought that the
05:40softness thing was still there
05:42to a degree. They won the game, so
05:44I'm not going to call them soft, but
05:46they still got run on.
05:48Well, it's also one of those things where
05:50let's give
05:52the Patriots credit. And I'm not
05:54going to spend four hours talking about how
05:56bad the Jets are because the Patriots are bad
05:58too and they won the game. So they deserve credit
06:00for winning the game. But some of the stuff
06:02that the Jets were doing was
06:04unbelievable to me. Since you brought it up,
06:06what was your favorite part? I think
06:08delay a game on a two-point conversion.
06:10I don't think I've ever seen that in my life.
06:12Francesco was ranting and raving about it. Maybe we'll
06:14play it later on, but he's so right. It's like, you knew
06:16the whole drive. You were going for two. You were going for two.
06:18How do you get a delay a game when you know you're
06:20going for two? I'd never seen that
06:22in my life at any level.
06:24That was wild. You ever seen a team burn all their
06:26timeouts? I feel like by the end of the first quarter.
06:28No, certainly in the first half. I don't think so.
06:30With Rodgers. With Aaron Rodgers. Not with
06:32a rookie quarterback. With Aaron Rodgers
06:34who supposedly has command of
06:36the game clock. No, zero feel
06:38for it. Zero feel. I don't know
06:40if it's him having a mini strike against
06:42the new play caller because that's not his guy
06:44Nathaniel Hackett. But usually
06:46I think it's something like that. I like it.
06:48I think it's him being like, I didn't get to play it soon enough.
06:50That kind of put it on him. It would be my
06:52guess. I guess he in the postgame took the
06:54blame for the delay game on
06:56the two-point conversion too because he said he didn't like the
06:58look or whatever. But regardless,
07:00it looked like a JV operation
07:02out there. Those guys, they're burning through
07:04all their timeouts, multiple delay games
07:06to the point where you're like, do they mean to
07:08do that? Like, are they trying to
07:10back it up a little bit? They were
07:12a mess. Also, they ended up
07:14in the grand scheme of things running
07:16it 28 times, which seems surprisingly
07:18high to me. The Jets did.
07:20Yeah, but it felt early on. Didn't feel like it. Early on
07:22they weren't running. And you're like, you can't run against this team.
07:24Yeah, early on they tried to throw. Even their
07:26touchdowns, you're like, why are you making it so hard
07:28on yourself? They had like two insane catches
07:30for their touchdowns. You're like, why
07:32didn't you hand it off? The Patriots have been getting
07:34smoked on the ground the last five weeks
07:36and they're like, nah, we're not going to do that. Yeah, we're going to
07:38put in the hands of that Rodgers who
07:40man, I was super wrong about him
07:42going in this year. He looks awful. I mean
07:44look, there were a lot of people who believed in
07:46Aaron Rodgers this year, but you have Patriots defenders like
07:48Devon Godchow coming out and being like
07:50he's like, he's cooked.
07:52I can catch him, said Devon Godchow.
07:54Yeah, so they were a mess and they
07:56played a big factor in it. They have hit
07:58rock bottom. Both teams are 2-6.
08:00You saw all the memes going around yesterday, which are really funny.
08:02You know, the Patriots
08:04going into the season, we know as a Patriots fan
08:06it's going to be one of their worst years ever. Jets fans
08:08are going in thinking this is going to be one of their best
08:10years ever. Both are 2-6.
08:12They've split their two games this year. It's like
08:14they are each other. One is the other.
08:16And I've never felt more right. You and I were doing
08:18a couple last week. Would you rather
08:20be the Jets or the Patriots just now
08:22and going forward? And we're like,
08:24it's the Pats because of Drake May.
08:26And then, I mean, I didn't realize it was going to be this
08:28bad this soon for New York.
08:30But yeah, you'd rather be the Patriots. Even in a
08:32time where the Jets should
08:34be better than New England, they're still not.
08:36It's unbelievable. So we'll get into a bunch from this
08:38game. If you want to pile on the Jets, feel free. I think
08:40right now, if the season ended today, they're drafting fourth.
08:42You're drafting third. You have the quarterback. They
08:44don't. And so, yeah,
08:46it feels like you're in a better spot than the New York Jets.
08:48New York J-E-T-E Jets!
08:50Plus, I mean, the Jets, this is not the year that you
08:52get the top pick. I mean, maybe people out there like the
08:54college quarterbacks more than I do, but last year
08:56at this time, we were probably all doing
08:58shows being like, well, Caleb Williams, Drake May,
09:00this Jaden Daniels looks
09:02really good. He's going to win the Heisman. Like, we all have quarterbacks
09:04that we like. I don't feel the same. And so, the
09:06Jets might go back into that Jets
09:08vortex where they're taking Mark Sanchez,
09:10Zach Wilson. They're taking big
09:12swings at quarterbacks, and
09:14they might not be the guy. Yeah, you're over-drafting
09:16Greg Nussmeier or somebody like that
09:18at pick four. So, you can
09:20jump in on all of this. 617-779-7937.
09:22We'll get to Gerard Mayo. Did he
09:24save his job? We'll get to the Patriots
09:26wide receiver room, which is still
09:28maddening. And of course, let's get to
09:30Drake May as well.
09:32Drake May gets hurt. Yes, he looks phenomenal
09:34early on in the game. He really did.
09:36His passing numbers should have been a lot
09:38better if it wasn't for the aforementioned wide
09:40receivers dropping passes. But he was
09:42running when it was there, right? It wasn't designed runs,
09:44but he's running when it's there. Yeah, and by the way,
09:46running when it's there, we had some concerns about
09:48his knee a week ago. Yeah, no, look good.
09:50He looks totally fine. He's running
09:52wild like he's Josh Allen. Touchdown
09:54run looked great, and
09:56then he gets hit in the head,
09:58and it's on a slide. He gave himself up.
10:00There was a defender in front of him, and he
10:02was like, I'm good. And then the defender from behind
10:04him comes flying in. No penalty called
10:06on the play, and it's
10:08one of those ones where that's a spot where
10:10the quarterback is trying to
10:12do the right thing and is trying to avoid the hit
10:14and then still gets hit. You know, it's funny.
10:16Miami game to came back,
10:18and he picked up a first down and then slid
10:20and got like a standing ovation. The crowd's like, yeah,
10:22but
10:24like I know it's fast, and I know
10:26a lot of the rules favor the
10:28or all of the rules favor the offense right
10:30now and trying to protect the quarterbacks. But that's another one
10:32like you want these guys to slide.
10:34How can they still get hit in the head when they're sliding?
10:36And that's what happened. And it wasn't even a penalty or
10:38anything. And then he stayed in the game.
10:40He stayed in the game. And so apparently
10:42you see the tweet. He was talking to
10:44Kobe percent percent like you're no good.
10:46He's no good. Yeah, but I get out of
10:48there. Oh, you're fuzzy
10:50out of the game. I want to get in. I thought it was kind of
10:52fitting that the coaches couldn't tell
10:54either he didn't talk to Mayo or like
10:56they didn't even know. And it was like the
10:58court, the backup quarterback and be like, hey, guys, you might
11:00want to get him looked at. Yeah, so the
11:02most prized possession on the team gets a
11:04concussion, keeps playing, comes off the
11:06field. Nobody knows except
11:08for the back. I mean, you'd have to talk to your players. Keef
11:10to get a read on them to run. I was not
11:12talking to anyone. That's a good point. He's busy working
11:14on handshakes with Alex Van Pelt.
11:16Yeah, that was tough after after the
11:18Drake May touchdown. And so may
11:20stays in the game. He is
11:22removed. He goes to the blue medical tent. He goes
11:24into the tunnel. And then at halftime, Mayo
11:26updates everybody on the broadcast. He's a guy. He's not coming
11:28back. He's going to be out. You're like, great.
11:30Here we go. Long day. What did you tweet in
11:32real time? Oh, Halloween was
11:34on AMC. And if
11:36people are barking, I was like, oh, you missed a hell of a game. It's
11:38like I watched the game. It's a joke.
11:40It's a joke just because they're
11:42not as entertaining, which you go percent is Drake
11:44Bay. I apologize if I offend anybody
11:46with those claims, but we watched it
11:48for five weeks. Thank you. We've all been waiting. It
11:50is a bore watching Jacoby percent.
11:52It is much more fun to watch Drake May
11:54play, even though this game happened to
11:56end in a exciting fashion.
11:58I would say like
12:00congrats to Jacoby percent tip of the cap.
12:02I also hope I never see you play again.
12:04Like I still go back. I want to
12:06be healthy. There's no chance he starts this
12:08because typically, typically
12:10this is not ironclad, but typically you get a concussion.
12:12You miss the next week. That's the way the protocol
12:14generally works. And if
12:16anything, I'm not big on
12:18baby and Drake May, but on something
12:20like this, I would skew towards give the kid an extra
12:22week. The idea
12:24that people are taking a victory lap, like, oh, you wanted
12:26the kid out there. You got him killed.
12:28He's going to be back in a week, but also
12:30those people can't have it both ways because they're
12:32they were specifically referring to the offensive
12:34line. That wasn't the
12:36offensive line, which by the way, deserves credit to
12:38the first time they didn't have a new
12:40starting lineup. So
12:42eight games, seven different combinations
12:44up front. So the first one that
12:46that had repeated and this
12:48wasn't him getting killed on the blind
12:50side because, you know, whoever
12:52playing left tackle couldn't make a play. We also
12:54part of his game is him running. We also know
12:56we're all talking about. We're talking about season ending
12:58injuries. ACL's Achilles. No
13:00one was talking about missing a week for a concussion.
13:02That's not what anyone was talking about.
13:04People also talked about
13:06oh, he was, uh, you're going to break
13:08him mentally. He looked pretty good. He's
13:10kind of elevated the offense.
13:12Look, I don't want him to have a concussion, but that
13:14we're talking very short term in the grand scheme
13:16of things. If you need to skew one way or the
13:18other, they'll give him an extra week. I would agree with that.
13:20Here's Gerard Mayo earlier today on
13:22the Greg Hill show discussing Drake
13:24May getting hurt.
13:28I said, here's Gerard
13:30Mayo earlier. I will say
13:32click play three times. Oh, I will say
13:34this. Let me say this. I will say
13:36this. Let me clarify. Look,
13:38let me clarify. Look, I will say this.
13:40We got it. Let's hear it. All right. Boomer Esiason
13:42was on with us earlier this morning
13:44talking about young quarterbacks
13:46who want to run the ball
13:48and don't always take care of themselves.
13:50Um, is that something that
13:52you, you want to keep
13:54reminding Drake this
13:56goes back to like, darn
13:58if you do, darn if you don't,
14:00you know, and well, we should put them in the first
14:02week or we should put them in here. And it's like, you
14:04know, you know, at a certain time, like
14:06we're, we're always going to do what's best for the football
14:08team. And look, the quarterback is the
14:10most important position on the field. I mean,
14:12however you feel about that, you know, the
14:14quarterbacks, the most position, uh, sorry, the most
14:16important position on the field. And, uh,
14:18he has to, he has to protect himself a little better.
14:20Okay. I don't
14:22quarterbacks do have to protect themselves. He slid.
14:24Yeah. He slid. What more could he do?
14:26Yeah. Honestly, what more could Drake May do
14:28on that? Do you, do you not want him to run?
14:30That would be my question to Mayor. Do you not want him to run at
14:32all? If he dove head first
14:34or even a guy like Jimmy Garoppolo years
14:36ago, not nearly as mobile. Remember some of those
14:38like on the sideline, like lower on a
14:40shoulder. That's when you say, Hey, dude,
14:42get out of bounds. No. Hey
14:44slide. A quarterback protecting themselves is completely
14:46valid, but was it valid on that play? I don't know.
14:48Yeah. Me neither. They need to protect themselves at all times.
14:50Sure. The league also does try to protect them,
14:52but he wanted to protect them on that, on
14:54that one. That seems like a, Hey,
14:56I'm going to try to have a coaching point here when there's really
14:58nothing to coach. He did what you would have
15:00suggested or you don't even talk to the offense.
15:02So let's not pretend that you do right. Alex
15:04Van Pelt probably told him, Hey, get
15:06what's there and then go down. That'd be my guess
15:08and or maybe TC McCartney, the QB
15:10coach or whatever. And he did.
15:12He was pretty good about that. And
15:14let's face it for a lot of the guys in the league
15:16running is a part of their game
15:18and you want them to be smart, pick and
15:20choose their spots. I thought in the time that he
15:22was out there, he chose wisely. There
15:24were a couple of other ones where I thought
15:26maybe he would tuck it and run and he kind
15:28of kept it through it. Now, maybe a receiver
15:30would drop it. Maybe, maybe they would catch it,
15:32but that's sort of 50 50 for him.
15:34But no, that one that that's crazy
15:36that he would say that about that play
15:38I again, there, there's
15:40definitely something to a quarterback protecting himself
15:42to as a great example, grapple is another great example.
15:44I didn't feel like may put himself
15:46in danger yesterday. He might when he runs period,
15:48but on that specific one, he's
15:50going to the ground in fairness
15:52to Mayo there. He was being led
15:54by the question. Like it was in reference to something Boomer
15:56size and said, but
15:58I mean, don't you say like
16:00on that play? Yeah, like obviously our
16:02quarterback that all players take care of themselves.
16:04It is very important. Should do. Yeah. No, I don't know.
16:06And so you can jump in on that 617-779-793
16:087. Do you blame Drake may
16:10as it sounds like Mayo does. I do not
16:12got to protect himself. You can jump
16:14in there. Also, how do you feel about the wind? Do you
16:16know how to feel about this? When Patriots beat
16:18the Jets, they ruined their draft positioning.
16:20Are you happy about the victory? Both keep
16:22and I think you should be. I'm happy about the win
16:24today. I'd feel better if it's Drake may
16:26slinging it and leading you to a win, but
16:28I still
16:30like the win. I'm still happy with the win. They needed
16:32it. This whole organization needed it.
16:34And this, yeah, good. Well, I was gonna
16:36say this idea that like they
16:38were super tough yesterday and
16:40they weren't a soft team yesterday.
16:42They still got run on. I mean, they still
16:44gave up, you know, another 22 points
16:46yesterday. Not that they were awful
16:48offensively. It's not like they were
16:50running the ball down the Jets throat yesterday. They
16:52got severely out gained. So I wouldn't want to
16:54go too far with they proved
16:56they're tough. They buttoned up
16:58all of their issues going into the game, but they desperately
17:00needed a win. And yeah, I feel good about it. I disagree
17:02with this text. Not the first
17:04part. Hey, morons. Yeah, but the second
17:06part. Yeah. The reason he
17:08was running is because the offensive line can't
17:10hold a block for more than one second.
17:12I would suggest that
17:14you maybe rewatch the game. I feel like the
17:16offensive line wasn't bad yesterday. The offensive line
17:18was probably as good as it's been. I think the O-line
17:20and like no one's telling you it's a good offense.
17:22No, no, no. We were, we moved
17:24past that, but I think they played pretty well. The last
17:26three, four games. Yeah, I definitely they
17:28allowed two sacks. One of them percent
17:30hung on to the ball too long. And the other one, I think Drake
17:32may just didn't want to make sure he didn't
17:34turn it over ever bad throw. So I don't think it
17:36was that. And again, we're talking about him sliding
17:38and Mayo saying that he should protect himself a little bit
17:40more. But yeah, the defense, I mean
17:42is bad and it's slow and
17:44a mobile as Aaron Rodgers was
17:46they got one sack, they gave up 112
17:48yards rushing, you know, four
17:50yards to carry. So like that part, that's kind of I
17:52guess average or whatever.
17:54Yeah, I wasn't like blown away by their
17:56toughness. However, their defense
17:58the twitch chat is right. Their defense gave up the go ahead
18:00score late in the game. Like, I mean, I like
18:02you want to Trump at your toughness. I
18:04I don't know that they necessarily
18:06checked all those boxes, but they did win. But
18:08and so they can change that narrative or at least attempt
18:10on Friday, Alex Van Pelt front of the show
18:12was telling us he wanted them to play
18:14longer and harder. Would you
18:16do you think they were harder and longer in this one?
18:18I think they were definitely longer. Yeah
18:20a little bit
18:22harder, a little bit harder. We got
18:24play longer. I think they
18:26did a little bit. I got somebody
18:28texted or tweeted
18:30over the weekend. They were like too bad. This one didn't go to overtime.
18:32So they really could have played longer.
18:34The
18:36Jets get a two-point conversion. We would have been there.
18:38Also, this one will get to this coming up.
18:403793 7 Mayo took a shot at you
18:42two clowns, perpetuating the idea
18:44the players were out London. That's not
18:46our report, by the way. It started with Kendrick
18:48Bourne just a player on the team. Yeah.
18:50Okay, that started with Kendrick Bourne. Yep.
18:52It was then followed
18:54up by a team-wide meeting that
18:56the team held in the middle of the week, right? And
18:58multiple reports yesterday, Mike Reese, Phil
19:00Perry, among them that
19:02said Javon Baker missed curfew
19:04in London. Yeah, it's not us. So like, I mean, Mayo
19:06you can try to cover it up all you want. Yeah,
19:08but something happened in London where you needed to address
19:10the whole team.
19:12Where Baker was disciplined
19:14going into the London game
19:16and Kendrick Bourne was calling the team out.
19:18So I legitimately don't know what
19:20it was.
19:22Also, if you're... We got next question by Christian
19:24Gonzalez. Try to pretend nothing happened
19:26all you want. Why'd you call a team meeting? If you're
19:28hanging your hat on something Mayo said, don't do it for
19:30too long because tomorrow he's going to change his mind.
19:32He'll correct it. Correct. You know what? I said
19:34that no one broke
19:36curfew in London. What I actually meant was a whole bunch of
19:38players. We don't have curfew.
19:40Nobody could possibly break it.
19:42They can do whatever they want. You guys can
19:44jump in on this. 617-779-
19:46793-7.
19:48Drake May and the injury
19:50or the Patriots putting him in harm's way. Did he put himself
19:52in harm's way? Do you agree with Mayo
19:54on that? And furthermore, how do you feel
19:56about this win? Are you feeling good or are
19:58they screwing their draft position?
