Is the Pats' passing game lacking the big play? Thursday, could the Pats look to throw downfield more? When will it be time to see what Drake Maye can do?
Transcript
00:00Well, you would think that, and he said, as good as we run the football, we should have
00:06the ability to take advantage of play action.
00:09And that should really open some things up.
00:12But they can't even do that.
00:15So that's a major, like, problem when you're talking about your passing game.
00:18And also, Wiggy, you would know this far better than I, but week one, you're playing the Bengals.
00:23The Bengals haven't seen your offense because you really haven't shown anything in preseason.
00:28And it's the first year Van Pelt's calling the offense, so maybe they were on their heels
00:32a bit.
00:33But one week later, whatever non-existent passing game that was there was pretty much
00:37removed by the Seahawks.
00:39So I wonder if that's another reason you would go to Drake May, that you've maximized whatever
00:44you're going to get from Jacoby Brissett.
00:46It's time to see what Drake May can do.
00:48And it's clearly an inflection point in that organization.
00:51Like, we all agree that Mayo would play Drake May if it was up to him, correct?
00:56Yeah, I would.
00:58I mean, I thought he was leaning toward it.
01:01He could reference the press conference where he said, we've decided, I decided.
01:08I don't know, Curtis.
01:10Like a texter said, I got to find the text earlier.
01:14But when you look at Bryce Young and you look at Bo Nix, essentially, they were saying that
01:21Gerard Mayo looks like a genius for what he has done in delaying the arrival of Drake
01:29May when it comes to starting quarterback.
01:30I've also seen so many people bring up the fact that maybe he's saying it too much.
01:35He's overstating.
01:36We're behind Jacoby Brissett.
01:37We're behind Jacoby Brissett.
01:39It was just a year ago where we criticized Bill Belichick over and over again for not
01:44giving any type of support to the quarterback, not backing the quarterback.
01:48So it's like, what do you want?
01:49Do you want a coach that's going to say, we want, we're going to stick by this guy.
01:53This is our guy.
01:54Or do you want a guy that doesn't say anything at all?
01:57Wiggy, that's a 2-3-0 text.
02:00Mayo looks like a genius when you see the performance of Bryce Young, Caleb Williams,
02:04and Bo Nix.
02:05Can you guys show me the player that would have been great but was ruined?
02:11I mean...
02:12Don't do it.
02:13Don't.
02:14All right.
02:15I won't do it.
02:17If you can be mentally overtaken, overwhelmed, destroyed by the speed with which you start
02:27in the NFL, you are never going to be a great quarterback in the first place.
02:31Correct.
02:32So to me, it's just...
02:35It's a self-fulfilling prophecy that Elliott Wolfe performed this offseason in discussing
02:40the fact that you don't bring in top-line tackles, you don't bring in a guard, you don't
02:44augment an already weak offensive line, and then you say, I'd play Drake May if not for
02:49the offensive line.
02:51You were the one who created the roster.
02:53And we all saw Brissette have a little bit better...
02:56He was more elusive in the pocket on Sunday, but Drake May does that far better.
03:02He has a far better arm, and he is the future.
03:07The days of just sitting back and enjoying the five-yard outs to Hunter Henry are kind
03:11of long gone.
03:12Well, you complained last year.
03:13And last year, we complained about our passing offense.
03:18This year, and I said it, if Jacoby Brissette is to play all year long, you'll have a worse
03:28passing offense this year than you did last year.
03:32Yeah.
03:33And yeah, granted...
03:34He just doesn't see the...
03:35I think, doesn't see guys wide open.
03:40But you know...
03:41And maybe you can blame that on the line, like you brought that up earlier.
03:45Is he skittish because of the past protection?
03:49No, he's a backup.
03:50That's what he is.
03:53You're looking at a guy that is a backup quarterback and has been a backup his whole career.
03:59And when given the opportunity to start, you start to see, okay, this is why this guy's
04:03not a starting quarterback in the NFL consistently throughout the season.
04:08He's been on five teams in five years.
04:10If you're good at the most important position in sports, you don't play musical chairs like
04:13that.
04:14And if you go, okay, this guy's a good player to come in a game or two, maybe hold it together.
04:21Won't make too many bad decisions, but it's not going to do anything crazy.
04:26He's your guy.
04:27But if you're saying, we need this guy to be our quarterback and be our starter, then
04:32you're seeing what he is.
04:34But maybe for Gerard right now, he thinks he needs somebody that doesn't make mistakes.
04:40And he's worried that putting Drake out there right now with that O-line, it's going to
04:44lead to really bad mistakes.
04:45So then don't say we need to do more in our passing game.
04:49Say I'm cool with it.
04:50On the text line and in the Twitch chat, what about RG3?
04:55So somebody who started early and was-
04:57Yeah, but he was ruined due to injury, right?
04:59And he was good, his rookie year.
05:01He was awesome.
05:02He was really good.
05:03I think he was rookie of the year.
05:04He was.
05:05Yeah.
05:06And then he got hurt.
05:07Like when you say like ruined-
05:08We're not talking about some catastrophic injury.
05:10We're talking about-
05:11Like a Sam Darnall?
05:13Seeing ghosts, whatever.
05:147-8-1 texter says Daniel Jones.
05:17No, he just, it's just not that good.
05:19He was-
05:20Yeah, Daniel Jones just-
05:21And I don't even think-
05:22Was Daniel Jones-
05:23I don't even think Daniel Jones was the starter his rookie year.
05:25He came in-
05:26So, I mean, there's a guy-
05:27I mean, they gave him a big deal after one year.
05:30Right, but we're talking about as a rookie.
05:33I don't think Daniel Jones even started.
05:35That goes to more of Shyam and I's side of the fence, where a guy who sat and is not
05:41very good.
05:42Right?
05:43I think, I don't think Daniel Jones started as a rookie.
05:45I could be wrong, but-
05:46He played 13 games in 2019.
05:48Okay.
05:49All right.
05:50And he had 24 touchdowns, 12 picks.
05:52So-
05:53By far his best year.
05:54I mean, I was listening to Jones and Keefe yesterday on the way home from Gillette, and
05:59they made a great point about Jacoby Brissett, which is when you're looking at that veteran
06:05quarterback and the mistakes that you're expecting he is not going to make, and that's
06:14your reasoning when it comes to not starting Drake May, you did not get that when he took
06:19that costly sack on third down and didn't throw the ball away.
06:24Is this team a playoff team?
06:26No.
06:27I mean, Wiggy suggested that they could be.
06:30They have the formula for being one.
06:33Especially when you look at how the rest of the NFL has looked in two weeks.
06:36But great defense and ability to run the football.
06:38Is another word.
06:39I guess I'll rephrase it.
06:40If, if Drake May has a couple of stinkers where he throws three to four interceptions,
06:45he makes bad decisions, all of that, I believe the fan base will say growing pains, not he
06:51ruined the season.
06:52A hundred percent.
06:53Right.
06:54Because you have to ask yourself this question, right?
06:56When you look at, and we bring up the Bryce Young situation, is it better for the Carolina
07:02Panthers to know what Bryce Young is his second year after playing his whole rookie
07:08year.
07:09And you're starting to see, like, he hasn't made any strides.
07:11He doesn't look like he's getting any better.
07:13Even if the team's bad around them, you could still see some growth.
07:17It's better to know that early than wasting yet another season with Drake May next season.
07:23Right.
07:24Right.
07:25Because now what do you think is going to happen?
07:26They'll go.
07:27It probably similar to what we saw with Zach Wilson.
07:30He's just not the guy.
07:32We need to now find somebody to bring in at that position because you can't wait forever.
07:38If we waste a whole season, Drake May goes out there next season.
07:40We're all excited.
07:41And he stinks.
07:42Right.
07:43Then people are going to go, why didn't you play him as rookie?
07:46So we could have seen that maybe he's not ready or he's not going to be that guy.
07:52Right.
07:53And then maybe he has to go somewhere else and he figures it out over there or wherever
07:57it is, kind of the Sam Donald situation, the issue, the thing in the NFL, whether it's,
08:03and I want people to really listen and understand this, whether it's a coach or a quarterback,
08:08two most important positions, you need to know what you have relatively quickly.
08:14So you can make the decision to move on or the decision, okay, this is the guy that we
08:19want to build around.
08:21And that's three years.
08:23I mean, look at Matt Jones.
08:25What was it?
08:26Three years of Matt Jones.
08:27And we're like, yeah.
08:28All right.
08:29Time for this guy.
08:30Time for this guy to go.
08:31Okay.
08:32But after one season, he looked pretty good.
08:33He did.
08:34Right.
08:35There were people who said, oh, this is the guy.
08:36And then his second year kind of falls off a little bit.
08:39We blame the coach rightfully so because he hired somebody that has no qualifications.
08:44Then we give him another guy who has the qualifications his third year and he still kind of has some
08:50of those bad habits.
08:51But Greg, what was the one thing the organization did in advance of Mac's rookie season?
08:57They spent a quarter of a billion dollars in free agency and they built a team that
09:03was ready to help support and augment the guy they took at 15th overall.
09:08This past off season, they did the opposite.
09:10That's true.
09:11Why would you not invest around a guy that clearly is going to need support as a rookie
09:17quarterback in the NFL?
09:18Well, yeah.
09:19Then you wouldn't have the, at least maybe the O-line concern that you have when it comes
09:23to Drake May and when you're going to put him in there to get killed.
09:26Right.
09:27The only redeeming quality of this offense outside of Ramondre Stevenson right now is
09:30Hunter Henry.
09:31That was a part of that spending spree.
09:33Right.
09:35And I think people look at Hunter Henry as like a good, a good tight end.
09:39It's a good player.
09:41Somebody you want to have, but not somebody that's going to carry a team like, you know,
09:45he's not the Travis Kelsey or the Gronk that we seen where you go, okay, we got the best
09:50in the business.
09:51We have a solid tight end in Hunter Henry who is going to have a game like he had the
09:55other day, but that's not going to be something that we see all the time.
09:59What happened to Travis Kelsey, by the way?
10:02I told you, I told you this before the season started.
10:04They're keeping them in the garage.
10:05It's like a really nice car, Greg.
10:06You throw the car cover over him.
10:09He's just sitting in the garage.
10:10They'll use him sparingly here and there, but then come the playoff time, they'll let
10:13him out.
10:14I feel like his head isn't in the game.
10:17He's focused on something else.
10:18He's too busy writing love sonnets.
10:19It's called old age.
10:20Greg, I can't believe we've spent, I don't know what's this, five and a half hours on
10:27the show since Sunday without bringing up the biggest story of the weekend.
10:30What was that?
10:31Taylor Swift is a big Harrison Butker fan.
10:34Oh, come on.
10:35Did you see her jumping up and down?
10:38Applauding his kicks?
10:39Ooh, he says, stay in the kitchen.
10:42Travis spoke about Harrison when that whole thing first happened.
10:46He said he knows he's a good dad, a good husband.
10:48He doesn't agree with everything he says, but just women stay in the kitchen.
10:51She was wearing a Butker jersey if you saw it.
10:53She was not wearing a Butker jersey.
10:54She sure didn't.
10:55No, but it is the Taylor effect.
10:58He's gone downhill since he started Dayton Taylor as far as his production on the field.
11:02I told you.
11:03In the playoffs, he was awesome.
11:04Just like AJ.
11:05He's not even, he's in New York going to the openings of restaurants.
11:09He's not even practicing.
11:11Yeah, because they don't need him.
11:12It's time to get his beard back.
11:13They don't need him in the regular season.
11:14They need him in the playoffs.
11:15Why aren't you mad at Patrick Mahomes for going to New York?
11:16Because Patrick Mahomes is good.
11:17He plays and looks pretty good.
11:19Did you see this?
11:20Oh my God.
11:21TMZ, Taylor Swift and Mrs. Butker doing a cookbook.
11:24This is going to be unbelievable.
11:26Travis needs his beard back.
11:27That's what he needs.
11:28He did get a new haircut.
11:30Get back to when you had the hood pass.
11:35Now he's completely gone.
11:36Every time he has to bring up that Travis Kelsey is no longer sleeping with African-American
11:41women.
11:42Well, he's not.
11:43He's completely lost his mojo.
11:44It's like Tiger Woods when he was banging Denny's arm and IHOP waitresses.
11:48He was spectacular.
11:50You know, you lose your mojo when you get rid of the things that you're used to doing.
11:53Yeah, he hasn't lost his mojo.
11:54It's called load management.
11:55What is this, Austin Powers?
11:57Now he looks like a 70s porn star.
12:00It's a different vibe.
12:01It's Uncle Rico.
12:02And he's wearing a horrible, horrible Gucci Kangol hat that looks like just horrible.
12:10Trav, man, come on, come back and you'll be back to all pro.
