00:00It's time for our health and wellness doctor and internist, Dr. Oye Balburias, to answer your questions on our Facebook page.
00:15So, let's say hello and good morning to him. Good morning, Dr. Oye!
00:20Good morning, Connie, and good morning to our listeners.
00:24First question for you, Dr. Oye, how can a pregnant woman lower her blood pressure?
00:30She's 42 years old and 6 months pregnant.
00:34Her BP is rising up to 240 over 120.
00:40It's so high, Doc.
00:41And she's also undergoing maintenance.
00:43What can she do to lower her BP?
00:47That question is from Tony Joy de la Chica.
00:51Tony, your condition right now, if your BP is really that high,
00:56it's actually what we call hypertensive emergency or preeclampsia.
01:05Especially if it's related to other symptoms or findings like having a protein in the uterus.
01:14But if your BP is that high,
01:17you should consult with your OB gynecologist.
01:22Because it won't be able to handle the maintenance of oral medications that you're taking.
01:28You really need intravenous medications.
01:31There are medicines that are given.
01:33There's what we call magnesium sulfate.
01:36But your condition right now, I'm telling you,
01:38you should go to the hospital because it's an emergency.
01:43And it can affect what you're carrying.
01:46So, preeclampsia can affect not only you but also what you're carrying.
01:53Next question for you, Doc.
01:54It's from RJ Pangilinan.
01:56Can I take multivitamins if I experience insomnia?
02:02RJ, it's not bad if you take multivitamins.
02:04But it won't be the answer to your problem of insomnia.
02:10Because insomnia is a condition where there are many factors involved.
02:15First of all, the balance of hormones and neurotransmitters.
02:20In fact, there's also a ratio between hormones and neurotransmitters
02:25that can affect why you're having a hard time sleeping.
02:31First of all, let's look at what we call sleep hygiene, RJ.
02:35Maybe there are things you do prior to your sleep
02:40that can affect your sleep or cause your insomnia.
02:44Insomnia is not a nighttime condition.
02:47It's a 24-7 condition.
02:49Look, if you drink substances like too much coffee,
02:53especially after 3 p.m.,
02:56because it can affect a neurotransmitter that we call adenosine,
03:03it can affect why you're having a hard time sleeping.
03:07Stress level, RJ, can affect cortisol levels.
03:12When cortisol reaches 9 or 10 p.m.,
03:16it lowers the level of your heart rate.
03:18But if your cortisol is high because you're stressed all day,
03:22all of these and other neurotransmitters and hormones
03:25that are not balanced or out of balance
03:28can be the reason why a person suffers from insomnia.
03:47Thank you so much for tuning in to Pinoy MD.
