02:15selection process.
02:17We guarantee that the voting results at the end of the day will faithfully reflect the
02:22popular will.
02:24After the closing of the polls we will begin the count with order and security prioritizing
02:29the presidential election and continuing with provincial assembly members, the National
02:34Assembly members, and will end with the Andean parliamentarians.
02:41Democracy is strengthened with each vote and the CNE ensures that each one counts and

02:56In other information, the security situation in Colombia's northern department of Xochitl

04:01Welcome back to From the South.
04:02Let's go to Palestine.
04:04Israeli troops began on Sunday their withdrawal from the Net Zarim corridor in northern Gaza
04:09as part of the agreement between Tel Aviv and the Palestinian Resistance Movement, Hamas.
04:14According to Israel's public broadcaster, the withdrawal is expected to be completed
04:19by the end of the day, leaving the occupation army's presence only in the Philadelphia
04:24axis and in the buffer zone between Gaza and its surroundings.
04:28The Net Zarim corridor is considered a strategic zone as it divides Gaza between the north
04:33and the south.
04:34Israeli troops remained deployed on the border of Gaza with Israel and Egypt, pending the
04:39negotiation for a complete Israeli withdrawal from Palestine.
04:53Seven Palestinians released on Saturday by the Zionist regime had to be hospitalized
04:57due to the brutal treatments received by the Israeli prisons.
05:01The information was confirmed by the Palestinian Red Crescent, which said that the seven prisoners
05:07had been admitted to hospitals in Ramallah.
05:10The head of the Palestinian Prisoners Club, Abdullah al-Saghari, also confirmed that the
05:15prisoners needed medical care, treatment, and examination as a result of the brutality
05:20they were subjected to during the past months.
05:23The Israeli regime released a total of 183 Palestinians in exchange for three Israeli
05:28captives released by Hamas as part of the first prisoner exchange, in line with a ceasefire
05:34agreement in the Gaza Strip.
05:43Israeli occupation forces not only kept up with a lion's siege to the Palestinian population,
05:49but they are also advancing with ethnic cleansing in the occupied West Bank.
05:54The southern refugee camp of al-Farah in Tuba city has been under siege for eight days in
05:59addition to the arrival of reinforcements.
06:02The occupation forces destroyed infrastructure, including the inhabitants' properties.
06:06Furthermore, the Israeli army arrested around eight Palestinians after having hit their
06:11homes.
06:12Likewise, the Israeli regime expelled Saturday countless of family members from the camp.
06:17Afterwards, they found shelter in several schools.
06:27In the occupied West Bank, over 20,000 Palestinians had been displaced from northern Yenin city
06:32as a result of destruction led by the Israeli bombings.
06:36The governor of Yenin, Mansour al-Sadi, briefed that the occupation forces shattered to pieces
06:41the Yenin camp so that over 20,000 Palestinians were forced to leave behind their homes and
06:47personal belongings.
06:48Al-Sadi described the situation in Yenin as a collective punishment of the refugee part
06:54of the ethnic cleansing.
06:55In addition, the deputy governor urged all international human rights and legal institutions
07:01to enter the camp and report the magnitude of the Israeli crimes against humanity.
07:12The United Nations assured that it is possible to rebuild about 70% of the Gaza Strip within
07:17a period of 5 to 10 years without displacing its population.
07:22The international body estimated that the cost of the reconstruction would be around
07:26$60 billion.
07:27In that context, the Palestinian Central Council reaffirmed its commitment to Palestinian national
07:34unity at all levels and rejected the conspiracy aimed at destroying the Palestinian cause
07:40and its rights.
07:41The Council also rejected recent statements by US President Donald Trump about forcing
07:46a displacement in the Gaza Strip and legalizing Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian
07:51territory.
08:07Russia's air defense shut down 35 Ukrainian drones in eight regions in the southwest of
08:12the country.
08:13The Russian Ministry of Defense described as terrorist the failed attacks of the Kaif
08:18regime.
08:19However, the entity indicated that Russia continues with special military operations
08:23in Ukraine aimed at protecting the population from the genocide by the Ukrainian government.
08:29Meanwhile, the Russian provinces voted in Ukraine have been regularly denouncing impacts
08:34of projectiles, drone incursions and various strikes that forced the population to seek
08:39refugees in other areas.
08:49In the context of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un indicated
08:53that his government will support Moscow's right cause to defend its sovereignty from
08:58Kaif and its allies.
09:00The Asian leader expressed serious concern at the reckless behavior of the United States
09:04and Western groups that are intentionally trying to foment the prolongation of the war
09:09based on the unrealistic illusion of inflicting a strategic defeat on Russia.
09:15He assured that his nation will invariably support the right cause of the Russian army
09:20and people to defend their sovereignty, security and territorial integrity.
09:31In North Korea, North Korea commemorates the 77th anniversary of the founding of the Korean
09:36People's Army.
09:37The event was headed by the North Korean Labour Party's General Secretary Kim Jong-un, who
09:42paid tribute to the soldiers and the founding army during the unofficial visit to the nation's
09:48Ministry of Defence.
09:49Kim Jong-un highlighted the merits of the military and praised its heroic traditions
09:55of defending the country.
09:56On February 8, 1948, Korean leader Kim Il-sung transformed the Korean People's Revolutionary
10:03Army into the Korean People's Army after the victory over the Japanese occupiers.
10:09The Korean leader led the new founded army to the success against the U.S. invaders in
10:14the so-called Korean War, which took place from 1950 to 1953.
10:25We have a second short break coming up, but we'll be right back, don't go away.
10:39Welcome back to From the South.
10:42Chilean authorities maintain the state of emergency decreed due to wildfires as some
10:472,500 hectares have burned down in the south of the nation.
10:51Local officials reported that around 15 fire outbreaks remain active, which have been nurtured
10:58by high temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius.
11:01They further warned that forecast estimated extreme temperatures will reach record numbers
11:06from Sunday through Monday being the most critical days.
11:10The state of emergency decree is enforced in central and southern regions of the country
11:15and the measure includes car fees to allow authorities to deal with the possible criminal
11:20acts.
11:21In this regard, the government assured that any person involved in setting the fires will
11:26be brought to justice and will be sentenced to 20 years in prison.
11:37Members of the PD Pincha Brasil project released around 4,900 jello-sported river baby turtles
11:46in the Agapo Acre River, Amazonas state.
11:49The Rios Limones Institutional Support Foundation in Seoul and the Federal University of Amazonas,
11:55IFAM, have been leading the project for 26 years with the partnership of Mineração
12:01Rígato Norte.
12:03Its main goal is to preserve population of chelones by means of participatory management
12:08as local communities and institutions get involved.
12:11So far, the conservationist initiative has returned to nature over 5 million baby turtles
12:17of the Amazon, including 70,000 jello-sported river turtles who live in the Amazon River
12:24and in the Orinoco River in Venezuela.
12:33This is part of a larger community-based management strategy, where the community, realizing that
12:39the resource is threatened, whether by human encroachment or illegal capture, decides to
12:44take action to protect it.
12:46There are different ways to do this.
12:47One way is to protect the beach, when possible, allowing the nests to remain there.
12:52The community then records the number of nests and then the number of hatchlings that emerge.
13:02And let's go back now to Ecuador amid the general elections that are taking place in
13:18the country.
13:19And to go deep into all the details on this day, we contact our Special Envoy in Quito,
13:24Ecuador, Jorge Gestoso.
13:25Hi, Jorge.
13:26What are the latest information at this hour?
13:29Thank you very much.
13:32We are about 90 minutes away from the closing of the polls.
13:37It's going to be at 5 p.m.
13:40The electional day was taking place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. according to the National Electoral
13:47Council.
13:48By 1 p.m., 30% of the electorate has already voted.
13:54Theoretically, according to previous elections, 80% to 83% of the people that are obviously
14:03ready to vote are going to do it.
14:06It's a tradition in Ecuador that people go to the polls after lunch, so there's going
14:12to be that expectation that the percentage is going to increase.
14:18According to the elections overseas, we're talking about the Ecuadorians who live abroad,
14:28according to the National Electoral Council, 47 out of the 97 electoral places has been
14:37already closed.
14:38There are almost like half a million Ecuadorians living abroad that could be eligible to vote,
14:48but in reality, the calculation that it's about 51,000 are the ones who really vote.
14:54There are about 600 observers between national observers and international observers.
15:03In terms of international observers, we're talking about over 500 to 600.
15:09There has been an incident in the morning where most of the candidates voted in the
15:15morning.
15:17The candidate has been, according to the polls, chosen to be in the third place.
15:22We're talking about Leonidas Issa from the party Pachacuti, that is the amalgamated of
15:30the indigenous movement, has voted and he, after he made his vote, has given some declarations
15:41to the press and he mentioned that his concern or his denunciation is that in this election,
15:49the level is not, the field is not level and it's not level in favor of the president-slash-candidate
15:58Daniel Novoa and that is absolutely going against democracy.
16:04When he was giving his speeches to the press, according to sources, there was some incident
16:13with a policeman or a soldier that they were trying to prohibit him to give his declaration
16:21because there were uncomfortable denunciations.
16:26That incident was a reflection of many discomfort in many candidates that they're saying that
16:35most definitely the president-candidate Daniel Novoa was taking advantage of the, if you
16:42want, elements of the government of the states in his favor.
16:47He was pushing for a candidate to be eliminated of the registration and so on and so forth.
16:56By 5 o'clock, so again, in about 53 minutes, it's going to be closing the polls and the
17:04National Council of Electoral Council Service, the CNE in Spanish, says that 60 minutes or
17:1290 minutes later, mostly 90 minutes later, we're going to start to get results of this
17:19election today here in Ecuador.
17:23We get back to you now.
17:29Thank you, Gustavo, for all the first-hand information.
17:31We will keep in contact throughout this key day.
17:35And with this report from our special envoy in Quito, we have come to the end of this
17:40news brief.
