00:00In Ecuador, Presidential Candidates Luisa González and Daniel Doboa will face each
00:18other on April 13th in a run-off election to decide the next president.
00:26Iranian citizens celebrate the 46th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution by urging to strengthen
00:31resistance and not surrender to the United States.
00:37And in the United States, President Donald Trump announced the imposition of 25% tariffs
00:41on steel and aluminum imports.
00:54Hello welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Televisa Studios in Havana,
00:58Cuba.
00:59We begin with the news.
01:15In Ecuador, citizens went Sunday to the polls in the first round of the general elections,
01:19with over 92% of the votes counted.
01:22Candidates Luisa González and Daniel Doboa go to a run-off next April 13th.
01:27We go live with our special envoy in the country, Jorge Gestoso, for the latest.
01:31Welcome Jorge to From the South.
01:34Luis, it has been technically a tie between the two main candidates in the election, first
01:47round of the elections here in Ecuador, 44% practically each of the two candidates, the
01:54president candidate Daniel Doboa and the challenger Luisa González from the Correísmo.
02:02Only half a percentage point, 0.5%, a little bit even less than 0.5% separates Doboa and
02:12Luisa González.
02:13It's going to be, as you said, a run-off on the 13th of April.
02:20It's about two months away.
02:23Another thing that is very interesting is that now it has been clear that the results,
02:29last night's result, has been interpreted as a victory in terms of Luisa González and
02:37in between lines we clearly understand that has been a real defeat for the president candidate
02:45Daniel Doboa.
02:46Why so?
02:47Because president Doboa was already, before the closing of the polls, organizing a statement
02:55in a hotel, inviting all his followers to join him and he was going to be giving a speech.
03:02Suddenly, that event has been cancelled.
03:07He didn't talk at all, he didn't make any press conference, any statement, anything
03:13at all.
03:14He disappeared while, on the other hand, the candidate of the opposition, in this case
03:20Luisa González, was talking to the press, was giving a press conference, was mentioning
03:26that for her it was a clear victory.
03:31Here are the results from last night's election.
03:34The third place was Leonidas Issa, he's a candidate of the indigenous movement.
03:40The party is Pachacuti.
03:42He obtained the 5.6% of the votes.
03:47The fourth place was Andrea González with 2.6% of the votes and 12 out of the 16 candidates
03:56that were participating did not even reach 1% of the votes.
04:01So now Leonidas Issa and Andrea González are going to be courted by the two candidates
04:08in order to try to make sort of agreements or alliances in order to reach the 50% plus
04:16one vote.
04:17It was also denunciations that were done by the president, former president Rafael Correa,
04:26that in reality the National Council of Voting, the official organization, NCE, the Council
04:37of Electoral Vote, the national one, Correa is denouncing that he is not a completely
04:46independent judge in this event, if not was participating in favor of Novoa, so much so
04:54that he in his account, in the ex-former Twitter, he mentioned that there are still 6% of the
05:03votes that are being questionable that has to be addressed and he believes that that
05:10percentage will put the challenger we're talking about, Luisa González, in the first place
05:17going to the runoff and in that case will put her as the official winner, something
05:23that according to Correa all the elements that are playing in favor of Daniel Novoa
05:30doesn't want to happen.
05:32So very interesting, again, for the challenger Luisa González, last night she had a fantastic
05:41victory for the president and candidate Daniel Novoa, independently analysts and pundits
05:51believe that was a big defeat.
05:54We go back to you Luis.
06:21We are joined by María Fernanda Andrade from Acción Jurídica Popular of Ecuador.
06:26Welcome María from the south.
06:27Thank you for having me, nice to meet you.
06:33It's a pleasure, María, nice to meet you too.
06:35How can we analyze Sunday's results, were there any surprises, any bold behavior, turnout
06:42or regional breakdowns?
06:45Well, we have been living in Ecuador on a rough political and social environment that
06:52takes shape in an electoral process with many news such as deaths, threats to candidates,
06:59raids on their homes, soldiers removing campaign posters of Luisa González, police officers
07:04surrounding candidates.
07:06All of these situations are unprecedented in our country.
07:10We have a president of Consejo Nacional Electoral, National Electoral Council, who has remained
07:16during three governments.
07:18All this is integrating a national context of general violence.
07:24We have the highest rates of extreme poverty, unemployment, forced migration.
07:29So we are having these new experiences here in Ecuador and all this electoral process
07:36has been very irregular.
07:40In your opinion, what issues, María, sorry, in your opinion, what issues, economy, security,
07:49institutional trust, things like that, have dominated voters' priority and how did they
07:53impact the outcome?
07:55Yeah, we have to say that the president of the republic has not obeyed the constitution
08:02but not retired from his duties as president.
08:05There has been an unequal investment of campaign funds.
08:11According to a legal demand, Novoa has campaigned and used state funds.
08:14It means budget from Ecuadorians.
08:17We have to say that the electoral trends of young people in the world in general is a
08:21very important phenomenon to take into account.
08:24They are the ones who fuel the processes of these races of fascism.
08:30As to the 50% who are voting for the conservative wing, it is necessary to name that choice
08:36and that is called in Ecuador military and fascist preference.
08:41We are having the worst statistics as poverty and unemployment for a whole history.
08:48But some people who voted for ADN, the president's party, read this as a result of Correa's administration,
08:56some of them.
08:57This segment of people is preferring to accept the word violence on the streets than a supposed
09:03dictatorship of Correa.
09:05In the year 2024, there were 7,000 deaths and only in January of this year, there were
09:13almost 800 violent deaths.
09:16So we think they are switching the dictatorship from one who improves health and poverty to
09:24one who sells the speech of liberty and richness that all we know that comes from human exploitation
09:31and natural resources.
09:36We are having a polarized society, I think, which is the reflect of how the modern world
09:41is divided by a neoliberalist illusion in where fascism is taking place in terms of
09:48offering security and stability with authorism, but not real peace, education and community life.
09:56I think now we have a work to do.
10:01I think the union of left-wing parties is necessary as well as the social organization.
10:08As Ecuador goes to April's runoff elections, Maria, what do you believe both candidates
10:12will do different or not from the first round campaigns?
10:19I think this time there's a bridge between the progressive wing and the social movement
10:26and that bridge is Leonidas Issa, representative of Pachacutic, who is third in the list of
10:32candidates.
10:34The social movement this time, as in 2019 and 2022, will take advantage of the prominence
10:40of the indigenous movement and Issa for the unity of the left.
10:45I think this time is the moment of the left wing to get together and to work, to be near
10:55to the social needs.
10:58That's the important thing.
11:00I think it's essential for Luisa Gonzalez to work into capacitations and educations
11:08in terms of what is happening really with our real situation, with our rights.
11:17It's important to know that capitalism is the cause for all our society's destruction.
11:25We are having a narco-state now and we have to think deeply about it.
11:32I think on the other hand, on the other side, maybe Nobel is going to take advantage of
11:43the domination into the media, into social media, to captivate the young voters.
11:56I think the speech of security, of liberty, is going to win, to take place in general,
12:06in minds, in people's minds.
12:09As you were referring to other candidates like Leonidas Issa, there were 16 people in
12:14total running for this race.
12:16How will the 14 others, including Leonidas Issa, impact the runoff?
12:20Could their endorsements sway the election?
12:25He has 4 to 6 percent so far.
12:29So we think that this is an important part of people, an important segment of people,
12:37progressive people and people of the left side.
12:43So it's important they vote.
12:45I think those voters came from this idea of the renaissance of the left side, of the
12:57left wing.
12:58So it will be important, above all, that the leader, the real leaders, Lisa Gonzalez and
13:07Issa can get together, can reunite and work together for their programs so that we can,
13:18as people, as Ecuadorians, can receive, can accept one real left program.
13:25I consider it's not too much people, it's 4 percent, 4 or 6 percent for Issa, but it's
13:34very important that all the left parties got to get together.
13:43Thank you, Maria, for your time here and from the South, for sharing your insights and inputs
13:47with us and our audience.
13:49Good to see you.
13:52A pleasure to have you, Maria.

14:34Welcome back.
14:43North of West Bank, Israeli occupation forces have intensified their operations in Nur Sham's
14:47refugee camp east of Tulkarem, setting up a tight blockade and conducting raids and
14:52home searches.
14:53This military incursion, which has led to increased tensions in the region, has forced
14:57the evacuation of residents and their homes being transformed into military posts.
15:02Israeli troops have used live ammunition against civilians.
15:05Two women, one of them pregnant, are reported dead, and several people have been wounded,
15:10many of them youngsters.
15:11Israeli troops have also damaged infrastructure, homes and essential services, such as the
15:15water supply, further aggravating the humanitarian situation in the camp.
15:24Meanwhile in the United States, President Donald Trump reiterated his controversial
15:27proposal to take control over the gas strip.
15:30Several voices reject the violation of Palestinian sovereignty and ethnic cleansing plans.
15:35The U.S. president said that Gaza should be considered a great real-estate site and that
15:39other Middle Eastern countries could take charge of rebuilding the war-torn enclave.
15:44He also described the war-torn territory as a place of demolition, assuring that his administration
15:50will be committed to owning it to prevent actions by Hamas.
15:54Trump also claimed that displaced Palestinians prefer not to return to Gaza, sparking outrage
15:59from much of the international community.
16:29And in the face of the controversial statements made by U.S. President Donald Trump, Turkish
16:45President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his rejection of the White House's proposals.
16:53Unfortunately, we see that the Israeli administration has more insidious and inhumane plans in mind
16:59instead of making the ceasefire permanent.
17:04First of all, I would like to say this clearly.
17:09The proposals put forward by the new American administration regarding Gaza under the pressure
17:13of the Zionist lobby are not worth our attention or discussion.
17:20Erdogan also expressed his rejection of any attempt to force Palestinians from their ancestral
17:26lands.
17:30No one has the power to displace the people of Gaza from their eternal homeland that has
17:35been around for thousands of years.
17:37Palestine, including Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem, belongs to the Palestinians.
17:46The people of Gaza, who have not left their lands despite all the cruelty, savagery and
17:51attacks of Israel, will continue to stay in Gaza, live in Gaza and protect Gaza.
17:58In Iran, citizens celebrate the 46th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution in that country
18:02with the emblematic march of the 22nd of Paman.
18:05The demonstration began in several cities of the country at 9 a.m. local time.
18:11The presence of political and military authorities and foreign guests was expected.
18:16On the evening of February 9, Iranians gathered in Asadi Square, where a firework ceremony
18:21was held to commemorate the beginning of the week of the national holiday.
18:25Every February 11, the Iranian people reaffirmed their loyalty to the ideals of the Islamic
18:30Revolution and numerous mass demonstrations expressing their unity and commitment to the
18:34defense and sovereignty of the nation.
18:39And the Iranian government reaffirmed its steadfast position by granting not to give
18:43in view of the U.S. threats and pressure.
18:46At Asadi Square, Tehran, the Iranian President Massoud Pashinyan addressed Monday his people,
18:52raising them awareness of Washington's intentions following debates on possible negotiations.
18:57There attendees were carrying banners in rejection of both the United States and Israel.
19:01Likewise, Pashinyan ensured that they won't be undermined by President Trump's threats
19:06who is trying to bring the Islamic Revolution to its knees.
19:09In addition, the head of state condemned the fact that Trump is pursuing once again his
19:13policy of maximum pressure by means of new sanctions, this time against the Iranian
19:18oil sector.

19:59In the United States, President Donald Trump announced the imposition of 25% tariffs on
20:03steel and aluminum imports starting this Monday, February 10th.
20:07President Trump added that he will announce Tuesday or Wednesday the so-called reciprocal
20:11tariffs, which means that the United States will impose import tariffs on products in
20:16cases where another country has imposed tariffs on U.S. goods.
20:20The U.S. President had already imposed tariffs of 15% on steel and 10% on aluminum during
20:25his first term, although he later granted duty-free quotas to allied countries and blocs,
20:30including Canada, Mexico and Brazil.
20:33According to experts, the measures announced by Trump threaten to unleash trade wars with
20:37the entire world.
20:46Romanian President Claus Iohannis announced his resignation amid pressures on him to leave
20:52office after a court last year canceled the country's presidential election.
20:56In order to spare Romania and the Romanian citizens from this crisis, from this useless
21:07and negative development, I resign from the office of President of Romania.
21:14I will leave office the day after tomorrow, February 12th.
21:19God bless Romania!
21:25Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia on Saturday disconnected the electrical systems from the
21:30grid linking them to Russia 30 years after the disintegration of the Soviet Union.
21:35The Baltic countries' electricity systems operated autonomously on Saturday to then
21:40be connected to the common European grid through Poland.
21:42This Sunday, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said goodbye Russia, goodbye Lenin
21:48in front of EU President Ursula von der Leyen and the presidents of Latvia, Estonia and
21:53Poland.
21:54Experts say that the consequences of this step lead to uncertainty as Europe invests
21:59in renewable energies such as wind power.
22:02Also stated that the supply may be intermittent and may increase or decrease spending on the
22:08weather.
