00:40Hello, welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Televisual Studios in Havana,
00:47Cuba.
00:48We begin with the news.
00:49The President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, received Donald Trump's special envoy and
00:54proposed a zero agenda with the U.S. government.
00:57The Venezuelan President received Richard Grenell in response to the request of President
01:01Trump, who has proposed seeking a way to resume relations between both nations.
01:06President Maduro proposed a zero agenda with the purpose of fine-tuning details and reviewing
01:10what has been developed in the last few years regarding bilateral relations.
01:15Let us remember that the Venezuelan head of state has emphasized that he is open to dialogue
01:19with the United States as long as it is respectful, public and open, where consensual agreements
01:25are reached and no imposition is sought in any way.
01:29President Maduro said that the meeting was positive, emphasizing that Venezuela will
01:32always practice peace diplomacy.
01:41Today we also received the visit of a special envoy of the President of the United States
01:46of America, Donald Trump.
01:48We have already issued an explanatory communique.
01:51Ambassador Richard Greene came and had a good conversation with the peace envoy coordinator
01:56of Venezuela, Dr. Jorge Rodriguez, with the Vice President of the Republic.
02:03And then, in Office 1 of the Presidential Palace of Miraflores, we had a frank and open
02:09direct conversation.
02:28I can say that it was positive.
02:30We practiced the Bolivarian diplomacy of peace.
02:34And whoever wants to talk, we will always talk, and whoever knocks on the door, we will
02:39always open it.
02:47Also in Venezuela, the Viva Piedad exhibition, in honor of the life and work of Colombian
02:51Senator Piedad CĂłrdoba, concluded in the city of Caracas.
02:54During the event, the attendees highlighted the legacy of the Colombian human rights activists.
02:59The event was headed by the Minister of Women, Johanna Carrillo, and the President of Telesur,
03:04Patricia Villegas, who highlighted Piedad's commitment to Latin American social causes
03:08and her eternal bond with Venezuela, and the leader of the Bolivarian Revolution, Hugo Chávez FrĂas.
03:19And in Brazil on Saturday, gasoline, ethanol, and diesel prices went up to adjust to international averages.
03:25According to Brazil's major oil company, Petrobras, the price increase is due to the
03:30market's need to reduce the gap with international fuel prices, which stood at 17%.
03:35For these types of fuels, the average readjustment was of an extra 1.7 U.S. cents per liter,
03:42increasing their average value by 20.15 U.S. cents.
03:46In the case of gasoline and ethanol, the increase was prompted by an increase in the tax on
03:51circulation of goods and services.
03:53Meanwhile, diesel's prices were subjected to two readjustments, totaling an extra 3.76
03:58cents per liter.
04:05When a United Nations delegation headed by Under-Secretary-General Miroslav Djenka arrived
04:10in Haiti, Prime Minister Alex Didier received the diplomats in Port-au-Prince, where they
04:15expressed their agreement on the need to call for elections.
04:19After unsuccessfully trying solutions by force with the sending of security elements from
04:23several countries, they are analyzing a political solution to a crisis that, according to the
04:28Office of the United Nations High Commissioner, leaves 13 Haitians dead every day due to violence.
04:34The organization also states that the number of internally displaced people has doubled
04:39in just six months.
04:41Meanwhile, in the Dominican Republic, the National Council of Traders and Businessmen
04:50warned about the losses of the productive sector following blackouts of up to 18 straight
04:54hours.
04:55The institution reported that last October, more than 14,000 members of the dairy products
05:00industry reported losses valued at more than $2.3 million.
05:05In this regard, the Corporation of State-Owned Electric Companies assured that the losses
05:09in the electric system are doubled due to the lack of investment and maintenance in
05:13the distribution companies.
05:20And in Panama, on Saturday, construction workers' unions took to the streets of the capital
05:24to defend the country's sovereignty and autonomy over the Panama Canal.
05:28Scores of protesters rejected the intentions of the administration of U.S. President Donald
05:33Trump of regaining control of the canal, and they also objected to a visit by U.S. Secretary
05:38of State Marco Rubio, who on Sunday, February 2, will meet with the Panamanian President
05:44José Raúl Molina.
05:45Demonstrators also rejected the bill to modify the organic law that governs the Solidarity
05:50Social Security Fund and demanded increased labor benefits.
05:59Also in Panama, the Ministry of Agricultural Development confirmed a new case of bird flu
06:04in the western province of Chiriqui.
06:07The case was identified in a backyard farm in the El Flor community in the Dolega district.
06:13It was reported that the case was isolated and controlled.
06:16Still, they proceeded to the total depopulation of the site and the burial of the birds.
06:20As part of the preventive measures, the authorities established a quarantine in the farm and nearby
06:25areas to avoid the spread, and prohibited cockfighting in a perimeter of 10 km around
06:30the affected area, although it will keep surveillance over the next six months to verify the presence
06:35or absence of the deceased.

06:55Welcome back.
07:17On Saturday, Israel released 183 Palestinian prisoners illegally detained since October
07:222023.
07:24The prisoners who had been held in a prisoning offer in the occupied West Bank were handed
07:28over to the International Red Cross.
07:30The prisoners released took place as soon as Hamas handed over three Israeli hostages
07:34as part of the ceasefire agreement reached in Qatar by the Palestinian Resistance and
07:38Israel.
07:39According to medical authorities, some of the released prisoners will travel to Gaza
07:43to be reunited with their families, but others will be transferred to a hospital in the city
07:48of Ramallah due to their deteriorating health.
07:54And on Saturday, Gaza's health ministry announced that a group of 50 sick and wounded
08:02patients, mostly children, and their attendants were taken into Egypt for medical treatment.
08:08The patients went through the Rafah border crossing, reopened for the first time in nine
08:12months, amid a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
08:16Many of the patients are suffering from chronic diseases, including cancer, and have been
08:20unable to get treatment during Israel's 15-month war.
08:24A total of 400 Palestinians will be allowed to leave Gaza as part of a January 19 ceasefire
08:30agreement between Hamas and Israel.
08:32The reopening of the Rafah crossing is a significant breakthrough.
08:36Israel agreed to reopen it after Hamas released the last living female captives in Gaza in
08:40exchange for more than 180 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails.
08:51And in Palestine, Israeli occupation forces continued to lay siege to towns and refugee
08:54camps in the West Bank.
08:57Palestinian authorities denounced that Tel Aviv troops broke into several Palestinian
09:00residential areas with bulldozers and other machinery in order to destroy homes in al-Dam
09:06and at the eastern entrance to the town.
09:09Authorities added that the Israeli occupation razed the streets of the government hospital
09:12in Jenin.
09:13Health sources announced that more than 19 Palestinians were killed after the incursion
09:18into Jenin, while dozens were wounded.
09:26Israeli occupation forces continue harassing Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.
09:31Palestinian authorities say Israeli authorities blocked the distribution of Palestinian textbooks
09:35to students in Al-Aqsa schools near the Old City of Jerusalem.
09:39They also confirmed that a teacher was arrested on charges of distributing texts with Palestinian
09:44content.
09:45Also, occupation forces broke into the south of Nablus, where they forced shopkeepers to
09:49close their stores, causing clashes with citizens.
09:52Reportedly, Israeli occupation forces and setters often break into Palestinian cities
09:57to harass citizens and provoke unrest among the population.
10:05Over the last 24 hours, Israeli occupation forces have killed at least 27 civilians in
10:09attacks on the Gaza Strip.
10:11According to medical sources, these actions also left around eight wounded.
10:15However, both figures could rise since many of the victims remain trapped under the rubble
10:19of infrastructure either damaged or destroyed by the Israeli bombardments.
10:24According to the latest health report, at least 47,487 Palestinians have been killed
10:29and 111,588 injured, mostly women and children, since October 7, 2023.
10:41The World Health Organization reiterated the need to evacuate some 15,000 Palestinians
10:46from the Gaza Strip to receive urgent medical treatment abroad.
10:50WHO said the evacuation is an emergency measure that should be implemented as soon as possible,
10:57given that out of the 36 hospitals in the Gaza Strip, at present only 18 are partially
11:02operating.
11:03The head of the World Health Organization celebrated Saturday the evacuation of 50 patients,
11:08which is the first medical evacuation since the start of the latest ceasefire and the
11:12first one through the Rafah crossing since its closure in May 2024.
11:16However, WHO denounces slow progress in this regard, for many of those injured by Israeli
11:21bombardment require emergency treatment.
11:27And in Syria, an extremist gang reportedly killed at least 10 civilians in northern Hama
11:32province.
11:33An extremist group stormed the village of Arsa and forced citizens out of their homes,
11:37then shot them and fled the scene.
11:40According to local media, general security forces surrounded the village in search of
11:43the hooded gunmen who committed these crimes and during the operation managed to arrest
11:49three of them.
11:50Human rights organizations said the number of civilians killed by extremist gangs since
11:55the beginning of 2025 amounts to more than 100 victims.

12:20Welcome back.
12:22The World Health Organization announced efforts to support Uganda's health authorities in
12:36containing the spread of the so-called Sudan virus in the country.
12:40The UN agency announced the allocation of $1 million from its Emergency Contingency
12:44Fund to support Uganda's emergency response efforts.
12:49The WHO also said it is preparing a shipment of medical supplies to be delivered to the
12:54Ugandan government.
12:56Following the confirmation of the death of one person from the virus who had been in
12:59contact with at least 45 people, an epidemiological fence has been set up in the city of Kampala.
13:10And Southern African Development Community leaders agreed Friday to keep peacekeeping
13:13troops in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo due to increased tensions.
13:18The group's chairman, Emerson Nangawa, called for bold and decisive measures to increase
13:22the capacity of the peacekeeping forces after extremist groups supported by Rwanda increased
13:27their hold in the east of the country.
13:29The group's military mission has suffered heavy losses as rebels say they will take
13:32the conflict to the country's capital, Kinshasa.
13:36In this regard, the Congolese president has called for a massive military mobilization
13:40to resist the armed groups.
13:45In this context, the World Food Programme reported that food and water shortages in
13:50the Democratic Republic of the Congo are burning the lives of thousands of people fleeing the
13:54violence crisis in the country.
13:56Basic services are reported to be partially paralyzed in the city of Goma, while refugee
14:01camps have been evacuated due to the rebel advance.
14:04The offensive by armed groups has forced hundreds of people to flee their homes and has left
14:09thousands of people injured.
14:15The Russian government announced that it will seek alternatives so that the Transnistrian
14:19region of Moldova, a border area with Ukraine, can receive gas through alternative routes
14:23and those resolve the current crisis.
14:26Russian Foreign Minister Spokswoman Maria Zakharova assured that the competent authorities
14:30are working to send humanitarian gas supplies.
14:33Zakharova also said that she expects a constructive approach from all sides to urgently resolve
14:38the crisis.
14:39With the energy supply of Transnistria, Moldova has found itself in a gas crisis due to U.K.
14:44Ukraine's ban on the transit of Russian gas through its territory and Moldova's refusal
14:49to pay debts to Moscow, which are estimated at $709 million.
15:00Meanwhile in South Korea, on Saturday, simultaneous marches took place in Seoul, the capital,
15:04to show their support or rejection on the arrest of former President Jun Suk-kyo.
15:09There is an ongoing political crisis in South Korea since President Jun Suk-kyo was ousted
15:14by the parliamentary opposition after declaring martial law, which he claimed was an act to
15:19save democracy.
15:20Hundreds of citizens demonstrated in support of the president and urged the Constitutional
15:24Court to dismiss the case against him and to set him free.
15:29But there was another group of citizens who expressed their rejection to the former president
15:32and demanded he be impeached and punished for the Korean martial law December 2024.
15:45For the freedom of our country, I support President Jun Suk-kyo who secures liberal
15:49democracy.
15:53I believe that if the president's approval rating surpasses 60 to 70 percent, all the
15:58wrongs in this country will be corrected, the fraudulent elections will be rectified,
16:02impeachment will be dismissed, and this country will become new and great again.
16:08Those who caused the rebellion including the leader have not yet received proper punishment
16:13or trial.
16:18I hope that the judicial authorities will swiftly address this issue and bring an end
16:22to the rebellion.
16:26Once the situation ends, I hope that the forces of rebellion will be sidelined and the remaining
16:32politicians, along with the civil society, unite to discuss how to rebuild crumbled South
16:37Korea.
16:38At this, we have come to the end of this news briefing.
