00:00I'm here with something that has gone viral online. It's the Tesco Tunis cake. Tunis? Tunis?
00:09I don't know. I don't remember these. Apparently they're from the 70s and 80s.
00:15Last sold by Tesco's in the 80s. Look at that. Look at the retro colouring and the font and
00:24the decoration. Look at that. It is properly old school.
00:31That is something that I have seen in old-fashioned recipe books.
00:41It's an alternative to a Christmas cake apparently and if you look there it's a Madeira cake with,
00:47and they call it, chocolate flavoured topping. I mean that doesn't sound particularly attractive.
00:54I'd rather it just said chocolate topping. Hand decorated with vanilla flavoured frosting and
01:00marzipan fruits. So let's get into it and see whether it actually tastes any good and whether
01:07it is a viable alternative to a Christmas cake. Right, it's out of the box and just look at it.
01:16That is, yeah, I mean that's about as retro as you can get isn't it? Look at that. That's
01:23church hall. That's 1980s party. Look at that. I have just cut quite a small piece.
01:36That's what it looks like when it's been cut and with all the plums.
01:43I've got a feeling this is going to be really dry but let's see. So here we are with my slice of cake.
01:50Okay, so yeah, I think that the Madeira was quite dry and that's meant to be quite a
02:07moist rich cake isn't it? The chocolate topping is okay and the buttercream is just buttercream.
02:16I don't think I'd buy another one. I'm always saying that on these reviews. I don't think I
02:21would buy another one. I think it's a complete win for style over substance here and actually
02:27I probably shouldn't be saying this but if you want something similar, a Madeira cake with
02:33chocolate topping, Fiona Kern's do some really nice six cupcakes that you can get in booths.
02:42They're quite expensive but they're better than that. I can see why these died out in the 80s.
02:49Sorry Tesco. No for me.
