00:00Hey what's up guys, MKBHD here, and these are the new Beats Solo Pro headphones.
00:11Hey woah, wait a second, I thought you hate Beats, what's going on?
00:15You know what? It's kind of funny, I actually kind of started off like I really loved Beats,
00:20but then I sort of swung the other way and then I hated Beats for a while, but then I sort of came back.
00:25But, I don't know, I feel like I have to check these out, look at the box they come in,
00:29which it says Solo Pros, they're called the Pros, I have to check them out.
00:34They come in a bunch of sweet colors, and then the box literally says More Matte on it,
00:41as if that's a huge feature, so I don't know, I feel like I have to.
00:45Alright, well does that mean I can have the Sonys then?
00:47No, no, definitely, you can, I'll keep using the Sonys, keep your hands off those,
00:51but these are definitely impressive to me, worth checking out, I'll show you why.
00:57So, I got the blue ones, but there are a bunch of colors including, yes, matte black everything,
01:02and matte red, and there's a dark blue, I went sky blue, just to throw you guys off.
01:07But every one of these colors is a matte finish, soft touch all the way around,
01:10and they show absolutely no fingerprints anywhere, they're just really well built.
01:15This was one of my complaints about early Beats when they were just these thin, glossy plastic bands
01:21that just broke super easily, this is basically the opposite.
01:25The top band is sturdy now, there's actually metal in the side pieces,
01:28and they adjust by sliding these metal pieces up or down to the size of your head,
01:32and it's rigid, like these are my favorite build of Beats headphones, actually of all time.
01:38But I also think that that biggest improvement may have also led to this headphone's biggest downside,
01:44which is comfort.
01:46These are on-ear headphones, first of all, and they simply don't adjust very much,
01:50like they move around a little bit, but not a whole ton like some others,
01:53and they're generally just a lot more rigid, partially because of that metal.
01:57And that's the number one reason they're uncomfortable,
02:00is because they sit right on your ears, and the clamp force is tight.
02:04And like sometimes when the clamp force of headphones is too tight and you know it,
02:08you can sort of break them in after a while,
02:12these haven't really had that effect, they've sort of stayed rigid,
02:16which means they're built well and they won't break, but it's still kind of uncomfortable.
02:20So I found I could wear these for a couple hours, and it didn't really get worse over that time,
02:25but they'd pretty much right away be a bit uncomfortable because they're squeezing my ears.
02:29But once you've got them on, that is actually where the fun starts.
02:32They turn on automatically when you open them, and they turn off actually right when you close them,
02:37which is a pretty good mechanism, there's no on-off button,
02:39so you never leave them on by accident and kill the battery.
02:42And once they're on, there's really just one controller,
02:45and it's the D-pad on the right-hand side, and it controls everything.
02:48One push for play-pause, you've got double-tap for the next track,
02:52triple-tap for the previous, and you can also volume up or volume down.
02:57And then the little button on the left can turn on or off transparency mode.
03:02And the noise cancellation is pretty good, like better than I expected.
03:05You turn it on, and you can immediately hear everything drying out.
03:08It's great with background noise, great with public transit, and awesome on a plane.
03:13And the way they actually sound is good.
03:18Yeah, these beats sound good.
03:21It's not like the previous solos, which have been some just super bass-heavy, overwhelming garbage.
03:27These are a totally different world.
03:29I'd actually say they sound pretty fun.
03:31Now don't get me wrong, they're still heavier on the bass and the highs, less on the mids,
03:36which can make it sound a little bit shrill if you're used to flatter or more neutral-sounding headphones.
03:41But in general, for most people, these will sound bright and clear and vivid, like a photo from a Samsung phone.
03:48You actually get a decent amount of isolation from the way these cups sit on your ears too,
03:53even though they're not over-ear, but mainly that's because they clamp so hard.
03:57So yeah, if you're still someone who's worried about beats because they might sound terrible,
04:01you don't have to worry about that anymore.
04:03But I'll still say the Sonys, Bose, and Sennheiser premium noise-canceling headphones,
04:09I still think all sound better than these.
04:11But I mean, that's pretty much it.
04:13I mean, they're headphones, like how many features can you have?
04:15The transparency mode, which uses the microphones to let you hear what's around you instead of canceling that sound,
04:21works very well.
04:23And the soft case they come in, it's just that.
04:26It's a soft case.
04:27So I'll say that's fine for me because I keep them in a backpack in a compartment by themselves.
04:31But of course, being soft, it's not super protective.
04:33So if you're tossing it in a travel bag with some other things, be careful.
04:38And then the main thing left is battery life, which on these is excellent.
04:4340 hours with noise cancellation off and 20 hours of listening with noise cancellation or transparency mode on.
04:50I just did a pair of cross-country flights, about five hours each average,
04:54and I wore these the whole time.
04:56It was pretty uncomfortable, but I wore these the whole time,
04:59and I was left with about 46% after all that.
05:02So that about checks out.
05:04So that's great battery life.
05:06And they also fast charge, so you can add up, if you plug these in,
05:09I think about an hour of listening from being plugged in for five minutes.
05:12The only bummer is that they charge via lightning,
05:15which I guess if you're an iPhone user already is not that much of a bummer.
05:19But for someone like me who paired them with an iPad Pro and an Android phone,
05:23it would have been great if they also used USB Type-C like those two things.
05:27But, I mean, these are Beats.
05:29They're made by Apple.
05:30I don't even know why I get hopes up for that type of thing.
05:33But anyway, I'm going to say these are my second favorite Beats ever.
05:38I'm still going to say my favorite Beats are the Powerbeats Pro.
05:41Those are still a kick-ass pair of workout headphones.
05:45They actually fit and stay in my ears, and you can run around and do all kinds of crazy stuff.
05:49So I love the Powerbeats Pro.
05:50But, yeah, as far as actual headphones that Beats have made, this is my favorite yet.
05:55I just wish they were more comfortable.
05:57And I'm so happy that I'm pleasantly surprised with the sound.
06:00For $300, these are competitive.
06:02You know, there is the $250 to $400 premium noise-canceling headphone world out there.
06:08Like I said, I'm still going to switch back to my Sonys.
06:11Yes, clone, I'm into the Sonys because they are more comfortable and they're over-ear,
06:15and they sound just a little bit better.
06:17But there is no problem with these Beats.
06:19Either way, it's worth noting there is a pair of over-ear noise-canceling Beats that I might have to check out.
06:24But in general, I'm impressed with these.
06:26Good job, Beats, or good job, Apple, I guess, with these.
06:30I'll be looking forward to the next pair.
06:32Maybe there's a pair of wireless matte black Beats Pro coming.
06:37That would be kind of sick, actually.
06:40Either way, hey, thanks for watching.
06:42Catch you guys in the next one.
06:44It's tech-vember, tech-November, it's tech-vember.
06:47It's tech-vember.
06:48That doesn't roll off the tongue as well, but it's happening.
06:51Catch you guys in the next one.
06:53Peace.
