00:00Hey what's up, MKBHD here, and this here is an Apple Watch Series 7.
00:16So if watches did S updates, like this would be a Series 6S for sure, but they don't, either
00:22way what you need to know is it's a minor update.
00:25Matter of fact, at the risk of tanking this video's watch time, watch time, this watch
00:30is basically a Series 6, but with a slightly larger display and slightly faster charging.
00:37Same price, that's basically it.
00:39But there are a bunch of other little quirks and things you should know about it if you're
00:42considering actually getting one.
00:45But yeah, like I said, the flagship new thing about the Apple Watch Series 7 is that it's
00:49bigger, all right, mostly with the screen too.
00:52So you get this 20% larger display in a watch that's just barely bigger than the previous
00:57body.
00:58And right away you do notice that everywhere.
00:59The whole UI is a little bigger, you know, in the calculator the buttons are a little
01:03bit bigger, in your notifications there's just a little bit more text.
01:07The map, if you're navigating, is that much more usable, and when you're typing your passcode
01:12of course the digits are just that much bigger.
01:15So for me, I like that the snooze button is also slightly larger in the alarm clock.
01:20But just being slightly bigger with smaller bezels wouldn't be quite enough for a whole
01:24new watch.
01:25So Apple did the Apple thing and built a few special features into the Series 7 that specifically
01:30work best for the larger display.
01:33So they made two exclusive watch faces for the Series 7, only to take advantage of the
01:38screen.
01:39This one here is called Contour, where the numbers literally wrap all the way around
01:43the very edges.
01:44And then there's this Modular Duo watch face, which basically has two really large data-rich
01:50center complications, so I can keep track of exactly how well I'm crushing my fitness
01:54competitions all the time.
01:57Then they made a full QWERTY keyboard for the watch.
02:01Now that sounds terrible at first, and it actually looks a little bit ridiculous on
02:06your wrist when you go to reply to a text, but it is a swipe keyboard, which is easier
02:10to crank out words on, you're swiping between letters of the words, and auto-predict is usually
02:15pretty decent.
02:16I just personally didn't find myself actually using this very much.
02:20It is enough to get a couple words down, but if you get enough words wrong, the UI is
02:25barely big enough to go back through and select the words you want to replace, and then you
02:30tap in and then re-swipe them, and you're holding your wrist up this whole time, and
02:34I don't know, it's fine.
02:36It's fine for quick messages, but I'm still going to go with voice text nine times out
02:39of ten.
02:40Either way, I think we all knew that having a slightly bigger screen would be a pretty
02:43basic upgrade for a smartwatch.
02:45But what I was a little more curious about, especially after seeing all of those Apple
02:48promo videos, was actually the shape of this new display.
02:52So if you've seen the videos and you're familiar, they've pushed the screen right up all the
02:57way to the very edges here, and so it gets so close to the edges that Apple is showing
03:02readable text literally bleeding over the edges and corners of the watch, like readable
03:08from the side, which looks awesome in rendered videos with no reflections, but I was very
03:13curious about all the reflections and stray light and refractions that happen in real
03:18life.
03:19Turns out, it didn't really make much of a difference at all.
03:22I mean, yes, the Apple Watch has always had this shape with the curved edges, and this
03:26year the display does push more up into those corners than ever before, but it doesn't make
03:31much of a difference with readability where most of the stuff is in the center of the
03:34screen.
03:35Literally the one place I found it to make the biggest difference is in the exclusive
03:39contour watch face that puts the numbers all the way around the most reflective edges
03:44of the display.
03:46So then yeah, you're going to have to learn to deal with some more annoying reflections
03:50on a regular basis just to see what time it is.
03:52I like the bigger screen though, bottom line.
03:54Now, something to consider, if you have smaller wrists or if you're a little more sensitive
03:58to the size of this big watch, it's starting to look like a computer on your wrist if you're
04:04getting the biggest watch.
04:05And so, you might consider getting the smaller Apple Watch instead because that screen size
04:11is up to 41mm now, which is still very usable.
04:15That's actually, fun fact, 1mm smaller than the original large sized Apple Watch.
04:21Now, when I said there's a couple of small changes, I really meant it, there's just a
04:24couple of small things.
04:26But the thing about small changes is if enough of them apply to you, then they can add up
04:31to make a bigger change, which is nice.
04:34But if they don't apply to you, you might not care.
04:36You'll probably know pretty quickly which can't be fallen.
04:38So this is now the most durable Apple Watch ever.
04:42So I noticed the speaker on the left is now a single slot where previous versions were
04:45two slots, but that's apparently not contributing to durability.
04:49It's actually the thicker cover glass.
04:51And you can never tell just by looking at it from the outside because it doesn't protrude
04:55anymore.
04:56It actually goes deeper into the watch and that larger Z-axis dimension makes it more
05:01crack resistant than ever before.
05:03So if you tend to put your watch through a lot, maybe you play a lot of sports with
05:07it on, you're lifting with it, you hit stuff with it, maybe you're tough on it outdoors,
05:12maybe you're my sister and the entire cover glass just breaks off of your watch for no
05:15reason, then yeah, this may be important to you.
05:18And then the watch is now IP6X dust resistant.
05:22Not because of some new hardware or coating, but actually Apple's never tested the watch
05:26for dust resistance before.
05:28So it's just kind of a bonus to now have that extra peace of mind.
05:31They've always tested for water resistance though.
05:33Like people ask me sometimes if they can get the watch wet or shower with it.
05:37Yes, you can literally dive underwater with an Apple watch and it'll be fine.
05:41It's rated for 50 meters deep of water resistance.
05:44So it's no Garmin, but the things have been pretty tough for a while.
05:48This watch is also now brighter when you're not looking at it.
05:52It's subtle, but you know, so if you have always on, you know how it gets dimmer when
05:56you're not looking at it and then gets brighter when you're checking it.
05:59When you're checking it, same brightness, max is the same, but when you put it down
06:04and it's sort of dimmer, it's a bit brighter in that dim state than the previous one.
06:09So if you're someone who likes to just glance over at the watch without doing like an obvious
06:13gesture, then yeah, you can check the time or your complications or notifications easier
06:18that way.
06:19It barely shows on camera, but this new watch is slightly, slightly more readable from off
06:24axis when it's dim.
06:26It's noticeable when you put them next to each other, but it wasn't a huge deal for
06:30me.
06:31But the little thing that applied to me the most, it charges 33% faster now.
06:35So same battery life, about a day and a half.
06:39You can kill it much faster if you do workouts or GPS tracked activity, stuff like that.
06:43But with and only with the new USB-C charger included in the box with this new puck, the
06:49watch does charge up a bit faster.
06:51It's not super dramatic.
06:53It'll still take about an hour to charge it up fully from dead.
06:56But if you're like me, I'm a person that wears a watch like 24 hours a day all the
07:00time.
07:01I sleep in it too.
07:02So it's my alarm clock.
07:03I hate going to sleep with it on, but it is a great alarm clock just tapping me on the
07:07wrist.
07:08So the only times I really get to charge it are very brief.
07:11It'll be like when I'm in the shower or when I get up in the morning for a couple minutes.
07:16So I want it to charge fast when I do get a chance to charge.
07:19So this charging speed boost is appreciated.
07:21Eight minutes on the new charger is enough for eight hours of sleep tracking with the
07:26screen off.
07:27So that's pretty great.
07:28Just make sure you have a decent USB-C power brick and you're set.
07:32You want to know my biggest disappointment actually with these watches though?
07:35The color choices.
07:36So you may have noticed I'm wearing the product red version of the watch.
07:41It's a very bold, bright red, but I feel like with a watch, you wear it every day.
07:46You want it to be a little more neutral, a little more able to match with more things.
07:51And then if you want to spice it up, you do that with the watch band.
07:53Like this beautiful new MKBHD leather strap from Moment with the full grain soft embossed
08:00leather and trademarked parallelogram tessellation pattern and that crisp red accent.
08:06Link in the description.
08:07Also shout out to Moment for co-designing this.
08:09But Apple doesn't offer a neutral color for the aluminum baseline Apple watch.
08:15I repeat, no neutral colored aluminum.
08:19So aluminum is the baseline, it's 400 bucks.
08:22And I define neutral as like a shade of black or gray or white.
08:26So I know some people might consider the starlight pretty neutral, but it definitely has a warmer
08:31hue than a silver would.
08:33And midnight has a slight blue hue, much more than a black would.
08:37So the only way to get a genuine neutral shade of gray would be to jump to titanium or stainless
08:44steel, which is not only heavier, but much more expensive.
08:48So it just bothers me that I can't get a baseline black aluminum Apple watch.
08:53Maybe I'm being picky about the color, but since I am that picky, I'll probably just
08:56stick with the Series 6, but that's not on sale anymore.
08:58So if you want to get one, good luck.
09:01So now on Apple's site, they're selling the lineup of Series 7, SE, and the low-end Series
09:073.
09:08So if you can avoid the Series 3, unless it's your first smartwatch, in which case you probably
09:12won't know what you're missing, that's fine.
09:15But the main differences between Series 7 and SE are the larger always-on display,
09:21this set of colors, of course, and there's a couple extra sensors, like for blood oxygen
09:26and the electrocardiogram.
09:27The watch SE is great for almost everyone, but if you can get past these colors, then
09:32yeah, the Series 7 is, it's the best overall smartwatch for the iPhone still.
09:37I mean, it doesn't have any crazy new features.
09:40It doesn't have, you know, charging on the back of the iPhone.
09:43It doesn't have the new square redesign we might've been hoping for.
09:48But yeah, it's the Apple Watch, but bigger.
09:51There you go.
09:52But yeah, there's a new Apple event literally next week, so if you're hoping for some more
09:57exciting stuff, maybe we'll see some of it there.
09:59But that's pretty much it for this one.
10:01Catch you guys very soon in the next one, because it's Techtober, and this stuff just
10:05keeps rolling.
10:06Catch you guys then.
10:07Peace.
