00:11Hey what is up guys, MKBHD here coming at you from a hotel room in California
00:15with a quick and scrappy video but I promised that I would share this with you guys when I got hands-on, when I got to see it
00:21and I finally got to see it. Motorola finally had their pretty low-key event tonight
00:26and I just showed anyone who thinks that smartphones are getting boring, just show them this video.
00:32So I'm going to go ahead and apologize right off the top for the absolute worst lighting conditions I have ever seen in a hands-on area.
00:39Motorola, why did you do it like this? Please never do it like this again.
00:44But nevertheless, I got some angles for you of the new Razr and my initial impressions and I am just fascinated by this thing.
00:53So I've never owned actually the original Razr but all my friends did
00:56and this new folding phone version is pretty much the same size as that flip phone from back in the day,
01:02one of the best-selling phones of all time.
01:04So it fits in the hand the same way, it's still super thin like the original,
01:08it's got the chin like the original but it's basically a modernized 2020 version.
01:14Now I've been talking over the past few months about all these different various ways to do a folding phone.
01:19This is going to be the favorite for a lot of people and it's of course a vertical folding screen.
01:24So this is a 6.2-inch 2142x876 OLED display on the inside.
01:30They call it a FlexView display and on the outside, similar to the Galaxy Fold,
01:35you have a smaller display, a 2.7-inch 800x600 G OLED panel.
01:41That's going to be called a QuickView display.
01:44And so of course when you fold it down, the phone is literally half the size,
01:48just the way the original was.
01:50It really is something special.
01:52So I naturally had, like you might have, some questions about it.
01:55I only got to spend about an hour with it in the terribly lit hands-on area.
02:00So I'm going to have to get my paws back on it again to do a full review and really get into the phone.
02:06But the first major question is like, how well is it built?
02:09Is it really built well?
02:11Like we've seen folding phones break, so what is Motorola doing to prevent that?
02:15Well, for my time, there's good news and bad news.
02:18The good news is this hinge design feels really good, really solid to me.
02:23It has a weight and a springiness to it and it felt premium and satisfying to open and close.
02:29I mean everyone knows the feeling of closing this phone,
02:32like snapping it shut after a phone call is going to be super important.
02:36And of course I couldn't quite capture it in this opposite of a well-lit room,
02:40but it's got a nice, it slaps is what I'm trying to say.
02:44It slaps. It's pretty nice.
02:45The actual hinge mechanism is again different from the other folding phones that we're seeing
02:49and it seems to work really well to the point where if you lay it flat,
02:52there doesn't seem to be much of a crease in the screen at all as far as I can tell.
02:57So that was impressive.
02:58But the bit of bad news is I still think it's going to be a bit delicate.
03:02There's still gaps on the sides and it still does look like a pretty complex hinge.
03:08So it sort of interrupts the otherwise pretty clean angular throwback design.
03:13Also, when you start to fold the phone shut,
03:15you can see the bottom of the phone sort of start to tuck into the chin just a little bit.
03:19Like you see that down there.
03:21You might not notice it at first.
03:22Sam Sheffer had to point it out to me, but it's worth showing.
03:25Definitely going to have to get this phone in the hand though for longer than an hour
03:27to see what the durability is like.
03:29But speaking of the chin, what's in there?
03:32Because that's a pretty big chin on this new Razr.
03:35And that's because many of the important components live down here too.
03:39So at the top of it, you can see that's where your fingerprint reader is.
03:42So if you still want to do fingerprint unlock, you can do that.
03:45And then at the bottom is, of course, also your USB Type-C port.
03:48No headphone jack, but there's your speaker grill.
03:51So it's all downward facing speakers here.
03:53And then about the top, you do have a bit of a notch for your earpiece
03:57and other front facing sensors, but no camera up here.
04:00And that's pretty much it as far as design.
04:04The rest of it is basically a spitting image of that nostalgic Razr.
04:09Everything about the shape, just the way it sits in your hand really,
04:12and the way it opens and closes.
04:14Yeah, it's really cool.
04:16There's also some Android tricks here to make it work,
04:18and Motorola has built in things the way they usually do with their Moto Actions.
04:22So if you remember the double twist to open the camera, that's still here.
04:26Things like that.
04:27Oh, and speaking of the camera, that's the only camera.
04:31Just this one camera here under the bump, that's your main camera and your selfie camera
04:35because when you open the phone, it becomes the rear facing camera.
04:38And then when you fold it shut, now it's your main selfie camera.
04:43So you'll have high quality selfies with that main sensor.
04:45That's another advantage of this folding design.
04:48And the aspect ratio, just to note, it is 21 by 9 when it's open.
04:52It seems pretty tall and skinny, but it's really not too crazy for a phone.
04:55I mean, ask Sony.
04:57It fits a video full screen and doesn't cut off too much if you're into that.
05:02Apps will work regularly without having to be adapted
05:05instead of looking funky in some square aspect ratio.
05:08It's looking good here.
05:09And one of the main things I really want to test more is the continuity between open and closed.
05:14I need to figure out how well that works.
05:16And also just what sorts of things you can do on that outside display.
05:21Right now they're showing things like the time, your notifications,
05:24and then you can answer texts and call up Google Assistant and do some pretty simple stuff like that,
05:29which makes sense on the quick view display.
05:31But that looks to be about it.
05:32And then the specs, for anyone interested, are upper mid-range, I would say,
05:36so not totally all out flagship.
05:38But you got a Snapdragon 710 here, 6 gigabytes of RAM, and 128 gigs of storage built in.
05:45It's also supposed to be splash proof according to Motorola,
05:48but there is no official IP rating,
05:50so I wouldn't go around crazy submerging it or anything like that.
05:54And the camera spec is 16 megapixels at f1.7 with no optical image stabilization.
06:00And then the official battery size is 2,510 milliamp hours,
06:05so definitely on the small side for a phone with, let's be honest, a pretty big 6.2 inch display.
06:11But that's part of the price you pay to get a phone as crazy thin as this Razr is.
06:17And then this whole thing, this whole package is going to retail for $1,499.
06:23Yes, $1,500.
06:25And it will be available in January 2020.
06:27So here's the thing.
06:29I want one. I'm going to want one of these.
06:31But not in like a smart, like this is going to be a good phone objectively type of way.
06:37It's definitely much more of a throwback, nostalgic way.
06:41And people who are younger than me won't even really understand that nostalgia.
06:45And also, a 6.2 inch display.
06:49I kind of already have that, and it already fits in my pocket.
06:53So part of me was sort of hoping for an even bigger display to make the whole folding thing more worth it.
07:01But the fact that I could fit a 6.2 inch display in my pocket in a wafer size thing the size of the Razr is still pretty sweet.
07:07I don't know. For me, this is not the type of thing where I'm going to nitpick a lot.
07:11You've noticed this with the way I've talked about other first generation folding phones.
07:15Like, yeah, sure, I wish this one had a high refresh rate display.
07:19I wish it had a Snapdragon 855.
07:21I wish it had a headphone jack.
07:23I wish it had faster fast charging than the 15 watts that it supported.
07:25I wish it had a bigger battery.
07:27All these things that I wish it had that would have made it even better.
07:31But I'm not going to nitpick because it's just that next level form factor change that will...
07:37I'll nitpick the next versions of this phone. How about that?
07:40Like, it's clearly not going to be the best buy for most people.
07:43But if you could give me one piece of tech from 2019 to bring back to show someone in 2003,
07:51I think it would have to be this guy.
07:53But anyway, that's pretty much it for my first thoughts and impressions and hands-on with the thing.
07:58Sorry again for the extremely scrappy quality, the handheld mic, all this stuff in a hotel room.
08:04But now that you've seen it, what do you think of the whole Razr folding phone concept?
08:09Is this actually the best version of a folding phone?
08:12Or would you have liked to see a bigger screen like me?
08:15Let me know in the comment section below. I'm sure we'll be chatting away.
08:18Either way, thank you for watching. Catch you guys in the next one.
08:22Peace!
08:28So with the Motorola Razr, what we're getting is a phone which is running Android,
08:32but it is a much more modern take on the standard Razr.
08:35So, to talk to the Android expert himself.
08:40Hi, don't you love these video conditions?
08:47Anyway, that was a word from Marques Brownlee,
08:49noted YouTube celebrity and huge fan of the Motorola Razr, specifically this event.
