00:00Hey, what's up guys, MKBHD here, and welcome back to Dope Tech, I'm bringing it back.
00:11So previous episodes were all thematic, where they would be based around a group of things
00:15with one theme, or maybe just one huge piece of dope tech.
00:19But there's been so many things that have come out in the past year, and that are about
00:24to come out, that are all dope tech, but don't necessarily get their own video.
00:29So this is my way of sort of collecting them in one place, I know some other people
00:32have their sort of favorite tech of the month, or of the season, or quarter, or whatever
00:37you want to call it.
00:38This is my version of that.
00:40This is dope tech, it's a video series to showcase the most impressive, bleeding edge,
00:44super high end, or just straight up awesome tech that makes its way to the studio that
00:49doesn't necessarily get its own video.
00:51It will all be here.
00:53So this may feel a little rapid fire, but that's what happens this time of year when
00:56there's so much impressive stuff coming out.
00:58So let's get right into it.
01:01So I'm going to start with this guy.
01:03So this is called the Asus ZenBook Pro Duo.
01:07It's pretty wild, I'd describe it as a sort of almost dual screen laptop.
01:12You can probably already see what I mean.
01:13So it's already a big desktop replacement, high end laptop.
01:17It has a 15 inch 4K OLED display, which right off the bat, there's not a whole lot of laptops
01:23like that.
01:24It has a Intel 9th Gen 8 core CPU, RTX 2060 graphics, a terabyte SSD, 32 gigs of RAM,
01:31and a ton of high speed IOs.
01:33You can see no card reader, but both full size USB and USB type C.
01:38But the high end specs aren't why this is dope tech.
01:42It's of course this crazy form factor.
01:44So first of all, you can see this hinge is pretty unique.
01:47I like unique hinges.
01:48This one unfolds the laptop into a sort of a propping it up off of whatever surface you're
01:53on.
01:54And that serves several functions.
01:55One, it gives you a better typing angle, and it's going to need that extra cooling for
01:59this massive second screen it has on the bottom half.
02:03It's like the MacBook Pro's touch bar went and ate five or six other touch bars, and
02:10then went to the gym and just got super huge.
02:14It's gigantic to the point where it is another 4K IPS display itself.
02:20It's not full UHD, but it is 3840 across by 1100 tall.
02:25And it's coated in this anti-glare finish, so it's matte like Apple's touch bar to avoid
02:30glare from overhead lights and things like that.
02:32Which makes sense since it's at this angle, but it also appears a bit dimmer than the
02:36main display since you're never really looking directly at it.
02:40It's always at this sort of off sideways viewing angle.
02:43And it's also super smooth and soft to the touch.
02:46It is a touch screen, unlike the glossier top display, which is really nice to touch.
02:53Anyway, okay, so what is the second screen for?
02:56What does it do?
02:57So essentially the best thing it does is act as a second display.
03:00So Windows actually sees it as two different displays, but you can do the same thing on
03:05both screens if you want, which is kind of trippy.
03:08But the best stuff you'll do with it will come with window management.
03:12So you can get one Chrome window up at the top, while you have Spotify open on the bottom,
03:17and maybe a Twitter window on the other side.
03:19And all the window snapping and everything that Windows does will work the same.
03:23You can snap left or snap right, go full screen, and there's an extra layer of Asus software
03:29added to let you do things like switch apps between the screens, or pin the launcher or
03:34full screen apps across both displays.
03:36Full screening across both displays, like I said, it's kind of weird looking, but it
03:40does work.
03:41I just think this is the least often way that you'll use it, unless some apps happen
03:46to scale perfectly.
03:47Maybe you can imagine having Adobe's Lightroom up at the top, with most of the UI elements
03:51where they normally are, but just the film strip of all your photos at the bottom.
03:55Or maybe Adobe Premiere up at the top, but just the timeline on the bottom screen.
04:00The way I found myself using it most often was just using the regular apps and stuff
04:04like I normally do at the top, and then having something like Spotify, or maybe Twitter,
04:09or something like a files app that I can just sort of mindlessly keep there, but I'm
04:13not using on the main screen.
04:15Then I sort of have my setup going, and I don't know, it's kind of great.
04:19And then Asus has a couple other features built in to make this layout more useful,
04:23like a dock that you can pin apps to, and you can have it remember app layouts with
04:27multiple apps, so you can just hit one button, and it loads your whole layouts for all your
04:31apps again.
04:32I'm into it.
04:33I think it could be worth it.
04:34Now, the question for someone considering buying this laptop right now is, is it worth
04:39moving the keyboard all the way down to the bottom edge and crunching the trackpad from
04:43this widescreen laptop all the way over the corner in this little postage stamp size?
04:47I don't know.
04:48I guess most of the time you're using something like this, you'll have a mouse with you.
04:51And bonus, the heating vents or cooling vents on the side will actually heat your hand with
04:56the mouse.
04:57Fun fact.
04:58But I just figure people will find like the perfect use case for something like this to
05:02work out in their workflow.
05:05Like a gamer playing a game up at the top and having their Twitch stream, live chat
05:09and discord on the bottom screen.
05:11Just certain things are going to work perfectly with this top and bottom screen setup that
05:16are going to make it worth the compromise of that tiny trackpad.
05:19Laptops of the future might be similar to this, or they might get rid of the keyboard
05:23entirely for some people.
05:24It'll just be one giant screen with a folding display in the middle that just folds shut
05:28like a clamshell.
05:29We're not there yet.
05:31And they call this a laptop of the future, and I think for a lot of people it is, but
05:34if you want to get this right now, you can.
05:37It starts at less than $3,000, so I'll have a link to everything I talk about in this
05:41video in the description.
05:44Okay.
05:45Next up is another dual screen thing, kinda.
05:49It's the LG V50 and it's dual screen case.
05:53Now the phone by itself wouldn't have made dope tech.
05:56I'm going to be perfectly honest.
05:57It's a pretty under the radar phone, but it has 5G now and it still does have that quad
06:02DAC and the headphone jack, but otherwise a pretty standard issue smartphone for a
06:06thousand bucks.
06:07But what they do have is a fascinating implementation for doubling your pixels on a smartphone.
06:14And you guys know I'm a kind of a sucker for pixels.
06:17So I guess they basically said, screw it.
06:18Since we can't make a folding phone right now, what we can do is put some pins on the
06:23back of an existing phone and then make a case that takes those pins and has a display
06:29in it and turns it into a dual screen phone.
06:34So you pop it into this case, you hit the dual screen button and now you have a dual
06:39screen phone.
06:40Now, still, I don't know how much I'd use something like this.
06:44It's no doubt drawing extra power from the phone.
06:47It'll make your battery life a bit less, but honestly, the way it works, it works surprisingly
06:52well.
06:53Like it's much smoother than I expected.
06:54So you can go ahead and open different things on each screen and then the dual screen feature
06:58lets you swap what's on each screen, put one of the screens to sleep, etc.
07:03They've really thought this through.
07:05It's not as automatic as an actual folding phone, but that's, of course, not really
07:10what this is.
07:11You can even go sideways with it.
07:12You can watch a full screen video on one screen while you text or tweet or do whatever you
07:18want on the other.
07:19It kind of looks like a Nintendo DS when it's sideways like this.
07:22It's an interesting concept.
07:24And then it folds over completely backwards if you want it to, which deactivates the
07:27back screen.
07:28So now if you just want to use the phone normally and leave it in this case, you can
07:32do that.
07:34Folding phones, I guess, can't really do that, but I just love how much they've thought
07:38this through.
07:39And it does one thing I think better than any folding phone does, in my opinion, which
07:42is just like that, the springs, the weight of that build quality.
07:49It's built well.
07:50I don't know.
07:51I just think this is just so interestingly well considered.
07:52The cutout up here for the earpiece to pass through if you make a phone call with it,
07:57the fact that you can flip it over completely.
07:59It's funny.
08:00It brings me back to...
08:01You know what it brings me back to?
08:02When HTC made that dot matrix case for the HTC One M8 back in the day.
08:10That was one of the...
08:11I think that is actually the first video I ever shot on a red camera.
08:16Fun fact.
08:17Okay.
08:18So next up are these guys right here.
08:21So these are Sony's new wireless noise canceling earbuds.
08:26They're called the WF-1000XM3.
08:31The name is still terrible, but they are absolutely worth your consideration.
08:34I think they're my new favorite wireless earbuds right now.
08:38So with these new totally wireless earbuds, there's a couple of different types of earbuds
08:41wearers that I think I've sort of picked up on.
08:44One would be the Powerbeats Pro type of user where you're getting them specifically to
08:48work out, to sweat in them, run around, shake your head a lot, that type of thing.
08:52And the other is like the AirPods type of user where you're just having the convenience
08:56of no wires, taking some phone calls, listening to music, pretty chill.
09:01And these fall somewhere in between.
09:03I reviewed Sony's over ear headphones not too long ago and they turned into my favorite
09:08headphones to fly with, period.
09:10So now that I've experienced those, I wouldn't necessarily buy these to fly with, but they
09:14do an impressive job at a lot of things for earbuds.
09:17So first of all, they're comfortable, which is like priority number one for me for earbuds
09:21when they sit in your ear, is that they're comfortable.
09:24And these are, and they just sit in your ear just like this.
09:27They have touch controls over physical buttons, which takes a little bit of getting used
09:30to, but I actually prefer that on earbuds so you don't have to be pressing them into
09:35your ear just to press one of the buttons.
09:38And there's a lot of stuff you can do with it in the Sony app, like remapping controls
09:41from the right earbud to the left earbud.
09:44They're very customizable and they have auto play pause.
09:46So when you take it out of your ear, whatever music's playing stops.
09:49And I love that a lot of these are doing them now with the proximity sensor in the
09:52earbud and it's quick.
09:53It stops pretty much as soon as you take it out and plays as soon as you put it back
09:57in.
09:58And they also have multiple device connectivity, which is funny because the headphone versions
10:04of these that I reviewed not that long ago didn't have that.
10:08These do.
10:09And overall, I'm going to say that they are the best sounding wireless earbuds that I've
10:13heard, that I've tried so far.
10:15They're on par with or better than the Jaybird Runs.
10:17They're quiet mids, not really shrill highs and pretty solid bass.
10:21And again, in the Sony app, you can change the frequency response if you like it to be
10:25bassier.
10:26The noise cancellation element is kind of minor just because you're getting most of
10:29your noise isolation from the passive seal created by the earbuds anyway.
10:34But they do a little extra work with the microphones to quiet those constant background noises.
10:39So if you're in a car or in a train or a plane or something like that, these are nice.
10:43The case to these isn't too bad.
10:45You know, somewhere between AirPods and Powerbeats, pocketable, but just barely.
10:50But it quick charges the buds, which is nice.
10:52And it's matte black.
10:53So I guess I have to like it.
10:55And it does instant pairing with this NFC just by touching it to the back of your phone.
10:59That's tight.
11:00The one downside, the big downside really, is that these are not water resistant.
11:04So if you want to work out in these, you'd still want to get something like the Powerbeats
11:08so you can actually sweat in them and they'd stay in your ears better.
11:11But other than that, not a whole lot of bad things to say about it.
11:14We're also expecting possibly noise cancelling AirPods to be a thing pretty soon actually.
11:20We may see that by the end of 2019.
11:22So if you're waiting and sort of holding your breath for better AirPods, that might be interesting
11:27to you.
11:28But if you're not one of those people, these are definitely a pair that you should check
11:30out.
11:31They're 100% worth your consideration.
11:34Okay, Sony RX100 Mark VII.
11:39I just wanted to bring this up for one specific reason.
11:41So there are a lot of really great in-depth videos on the new RX100s on YouTube.
11:46I'll link those below.
11:47This obviously isn't that.
11:48But I've been an RX100 fan since literally the very first one.
11:52It's been an awesome compact photo camera and then it stepped up its game as a 4K video
11:56camera over the past couple of years, articulating LCD screen, better color science, eye tracking
12:02autofocus.
12:03And it's always been such a great compact form factor and it's still very modular.
12:08It's got a pop-up OLED EVF.
12:10It has a pop-up flash.
12:11It has the custom ring that you can map to whatever you want.
12:14But it's always been missing one thing, a mic jack.
12:19And this version, Mark VII, finally has a mic jack.
12:23Honestly, it seems like every time Canon releases something, Sony is always ready with something
12:26right up their sleeve, like waiting to be released.
12:30It seems like this is another one of those things that sort of came in the middle of
12:33a cycle.
12:34They had done it on the year pretty regularly for a while until this one.
12:38But they finally threw a mic jack in the RX100 Mark VII, which I think makes it that
12:42much better of a little point-and-shoot vlogging camera.
12:46Definitely worth checking out.
12:47The competition back and forth between Canon and Sony over the years has actually been
12:50really fascinating to watch.
12:52It almost seems like Canon enjoys shooting themselves in the foot and leaving out individual
12:57features that would make a camera amazing.
12:59Sony does not have a habit of doing that at this point.
13:02All right.
13:04I don't know if you saw it over here before, but it was in a previous shot.
13:09This is the newest member of the Logitech MX family.
13:12It's the Logitech MX Master 3.
13:14So it just came out, but Logitech has let me use this guy for the past week.
13:17And I gotta say, I like it a lot.
13:20In appearance, it is a pretty minor update from the MX Master 2S.
13:24It looks pretty similar, but it has some minor adjustments.
13:28The battery indicator, for example, is higher up, so you can see it even when your hand
13:32is on the mouse.
13:33The forward and back buttons are a bit more separate, so they're easier to press without
13:37looking.
13:38And the sort of a hex design is now these more clear ridges and it's clean, and a couple
13:42other really subtle things.
13:44The main difference is the scroll wheel is now much improved, and the software is super
13:49customizable.
13:50So now you can map the same buttons for different functions in different apps.
13:55So for example, the sideways scroll wheel for me, in Final Cut, that will scroll left
13:59and right on the timeline.
14:01But in Photoshop, it'll change the brush size, and in the browser, it'll just scroll
14:05left and right.
14:06And of course, the one main thing that I was sort of hoping that they would do all along
14:09actually with the last MX Master, is they've switched over to USB Type-C.
14:14And for no other reason than the fact that I can use a bunch of my existing cables now,
14:18that's really satisfying.
14:19So I've really enjoyed using this, editing with this mouse, using it every day.
14:23It's one of the few pieces of tech that I can say I've consistently had the same product
14:27or version of a product in my workflow for a very long time.
14:32So the best mouse that I've used for the past couple of years just got better.
14:38Gotta love that.
14:46Continuity.
14:47Alright, so last but not least is the microphone that I'm speaking into right now.
14:51This, it's not even new, it's just new to me, and I newly love it.
14:56It's the Shure SM7B.
14:57So you've probably heard of this guy already if you're in the podcasting world, but I've
15:00been doing video for so long, and I've been using a shotgun microphone specifically by
15:05Sennheiser for so long, that now that I'm doing podcasts and that I'm in this audio
15:10world, I'm discovering this whole new world of audio gear.
15:13So this mic, this one specifically might be the most popular one out there, it's the one
15:17Joe Rogan uses, it's the one a ton of radio stations have used, probably ASMR videos,
15:22it's us out there.
15:23This mic is made specifically for vocals, both in the way it's tuned for frequency
15:27response and what noises it isolates, and in the way it's built.
15:30It's solid metal, it's rugged, just about everything about it.
15:34One pro tip I can give, besides getting it on an arm and getting the microphone as close
15:37to your mouth as possible for the best sound, is to get some sort of external amplification
15:42like this.
15:43This is a Cloudlifter.
15:44If you haven't already heard of it, it's often sold with the Shure SM7B, which happens to
15:49be a very quiet microphone by itself if you go straight into a recorder, which is what
15:53we tried first on episode one of our podcast.
15:56But we found these, we got them, they do a great job of amplifying, and now the microphone
16:01sounds much more lively and more open, it just sounds better.
16:04So you plug the microphone via XLR into the Cloudlifter, you plug the Cloudlifter into
16:08your recorder, and you get the amplification that way.
16:10And it's great.
16:12So I just figured I'd give a shoutout to the mic, which is a central piece of the podcast,
16:16and give a shoutout to the podcast while we're at it.
16:18But either way, that has been it.
16:20That is episode one of Dope Tech.
16:22And I'm super open to your suggestions for both format and all sorts of other ways that
16:27we can make these episodes better.
16:29I think they're a lot of fun, but I think we're going to have a lot of other stuff to
16:31show you, so other ways that we can do it well are welcome in the comments section below.
16:36But again, like I said, all the links of all the things I talked about are also below.
16:40And that'll be it.
16:41Thank you for watching.
16:42Catch you guys in the next one.
16:44Peace!
