00:00Hey what's up guys, I'm KimpyHD here and welcome back to Quarantine Content, just a little
00:07entertainment for you while we're all staying inside.
00:09I'm your host Marques Brownlee and this is a new product, oh yeah, it's a new Apple product.
00:17This is a wild time to be alive and also a wild time to release a new product.
00:23There's no events and there's no stores, no lines, just none of the typical Apple
00:29hype.
00:30There isn't even any stores really.
00:31Like if you go to apple.com right now, at the top it says, hey, all our stores are
00:36closed right now until further notice.
00:39But then right underneath it says, hey, check out our new stuff we just unveiled.
00:42So there is a bunch of stuff that's new but there are two main things, you probably saw
00:45me tweeting about them, that is the new iPad Pro and the new MacBook Air.
00:51So feel free to leave a thumbs up on this video if you want me to cover both of those
00:54things in MKBHD style.
00:56But for now, what we have here is the new refresh 2020 MacBook Air.
01:01So the Air is Apple's most popular laptop, it's their most popular Mac really, and it
01:05has been for a while.
01:07This change is just a nice little refresh, it's a little update to bring it up to speed
01:11with 2020.
01:12You remember the changes from the 16-inch MacBook Pro from a couple months ago that
01:16made it so great?
01:17That stuff that I was asking them to also bring down to the 13-inch MacBook Pro, well,
01:22they brought some of that down to the MacBook Air here first.
01:26So to start, the new Magic Keyboard.
01:28This was the big change we were all waiting for, getting rid of the butterfly switches
01:32and moving back to scissor switches, which are more reliable, have more travel, feel
01:37better to type on, they're just straight up better in every way.
01:40It's still backlit, it's still the same size and everything, but now it's just miles better
01:45to type on.
01:46In fact, I've been using that 16-inch MacBook Pro a lot over the past few weeks because
01:50of the new keyboard, and it's been excellent.
01:52So I guess just generally good to see Apple basically silently admitting fault by slowly
01:58removing butterfly switches from the rest of their lineup.
02:02And this keyboard also has the separate escape key, no touch bar on the MacBook Air, of course.
02:07And then the Touch ID fingerprint reader is separated off in the corner and still works
02:10really quickly to unlock and wake up and sleep.
02:13And the inverted T arrow keys are also back, everybody's favorite.
02:17The specs also got an update now to Intel's 10th Gen chips and Iris Plus graphics.
02:23It's a good performance boost.
02:24The MacBook Air has never been a powerhouse, and it still isn't, but it also never really
02:29has needed to be.
02:31So this is a good update to catch it up to speed.
02:33You can get a quad-core chip in a MacBook Air now for the first time, and the Iris Plus
02:37graphics are saying they can deliver up to 80% faster graphics performance in graphics
02:42intensive applications.
02:43This isn't a review, I've only had this thing for a couple hours, so I can only really
02:46just rely on benchmarks for now.
02:49But yeah, the numbers say good things.
02:51And yes, that means it will also now support Pro Display XDR.
02:55Now I don't know how many people set up include a MacBook Air and a Pro Display XDR, but hey,
03:00if that's you, now you're covered.
03:02They also went ahead and doubled the base storage to 256 gigs now, and you can go up
03:06to two terabytes for the first time on a MacBook Air, which is nice.
03:10And you can also do 8 or 16 gigs of RAM, which puts it right on par with the Samsung
03:17Galaxy S20 Ultra.
03:19That's a weird comparison.
03:20But they're also now still saying you'll get all-day battery life.
03:22They say 11 hours of battery life by their tests.
03:25Now, of course, like I said, I haven't had this long enough to really test that, but
03:28that's a good sign that the claim hasn't changed too much.
03:30It still should get pretty good battery life.
03:32And that is pretty much the meat of it.
03:33Like they really haven't changed, when you think about it, that much about the MacBook
03:36Air.
03:37It's a super thin laptop, lightweight machine, we all know.
03:41Still the same port situation.
03:43But what they have changed is the stuff that's at the real core of it, literally, which
03:47is the specs and the keyboard.
03:49But it's not a MacBook Pro after all, so there are some things that they didn't change
03:55to this laptop.
03:56So the big one is there's no screen upgrade on this MacBook Air.
03:58It's the same size, 13 inch, 2560 by 1600 screen, and the bezels are all still here.
04:05It's a pretty nice screen, but it's not the best screen possible.
04:08No Wi-Fi 6, and still a pretty garbage quality 720p, not even 1080 webcam.
04:16This is what that looks like.
04:17It's still kind of impressive how bad the webcams still look in these MacBooks.
04:21And then the microphone, it is improved, and I think it sounds pretty good.
04:24There's a pretty low signal to noise ratio.
04:27It's not exactly up to the quality of the 16 inch MacBook Pro, which you might even
04:31want to record a podcast on, but decent array of improved mics in the MacBook Pro.
04:36It's just, it's still going to look like this.
04:39Like this, what you're hearing now, this is what a studio quality microphone sounds like,
04:43just in case you're wondering.
04:44Anyway, there's better speakers in this laptop too.
04:47There's more bass and about 25% more volume than the last MacBook Air.
04:51I will say they don't match up to the 16 inch MacBook Pro's new speakers, but that's totally
04:55unfair because nothing really does.
04:58Those are incredible.
04:59And the new MacBook Air speakers are actually quite nice.
05:01They get pretty loud and they sound clear.
05:04They're still not as bassy as something from a bigger laptop, but I'm impressed here.
05:07Then the final update, which is price.
05:09This now starts at $999, which is still an expensive laptop, but that's pretty good,
05:14especially when you're competitive with other laptops in this category with the same components,
05:19same performance, and a pretty premium design.
05:22Plus it's a hundred bucks off if you have a .edu email address, so it starts at $899
05:28for them.
05:29So that's your first look at it.
05:30The thing is, at the end of the day, barring any weird performance problems or strange
05:34glitches that I haven't found, this is setting itself up to be, again, Apple's most popular
05:39computer for here on out.
05:41And it makes me want to switch.
05:43My daily computer that I carry most often as a laptop is the 13 inch MacBook Pro.
05:49I still hate that keyboard.
05:50It's still the flat butterfly switches.
05:53And I feel like I could easily switch to the MacBook Air.
05:56I don't do anything that complex.
05:59I don't do video editing on my laptop that much.
06:01So this could easily be my daily if I can get used to two ports.
06:04I think the number one thing I would miss is the extra ports and a little bit of a
06:07brighter screen, but generally MacBook Air is looking pretty good.
06:10Either way, this refresh is about what we were looking for, for the MacBook Air.
06:13Good work.
06:14Now Apple, if you could get on it with the 13 inch MacBook Pro, that would be nice.
06:18Either way, that's been it.
06:20Thank you for watching.
06:21Let me know if you want to see some iPad stuff and leave a comment below.
06:24What do you guys think?
06:25Catch you guys in the next one.
06:26Peace.
06:27Peace.
