00:02Hey what's up, MKBHD here.
00:04So, this is kind of funny.
00:05All the years that I was in college,
00:07I never actually made my own, like,
00:09best college tech or back-to-school tech video.
00:12I graduated from college 7 years ago,
00:14and it makes me feel old saying that out loud,
00:16but back then, I was just watching
00:18everybody else's back-to-school tech videos
00:20and then trying to get my own stuff together.
00:22But fun fact, the school I went to,
00:24the college I went to,
00:25actually, as part of tuition,
00:27gave every undergrad student
00:29the same HP laptop,
00:32which was kind of a nice perk.
00:34It was a thick workstation.
00:36Everyone had the exact same one.
00:38So, as Stephen's students,
00:39we didn't really do back-to-school computers,
00:41but we did do back-to-school everything else.
00:43All the spicing up the workspace
00:45and the dorm room and everything
00:47around that computer.
00:48Either way, I might be out of school now,
00:50but I finally get the chance to make
00:52my own back-to-school video,
00:54so I want to do it now, in 2022,
00:56when the options are better than ever.
00:58So, I got 10 things for you.
01:00And this video is sponsored by Best Buy,
01:02which just means that all the stuff
01:04I'm going to talk about is also available
01:06at BestBuy.com.
01:07All the links are going to be down below
01:09in the description,
01:10and you can also go to a Best Buy
01:12and actually try the stuff out in person, too,
01:14which is pretty dope.
01:15So, first of all, a computer.
01:16So, I'm going to give you three options.
01:18I'm going to have a Windows option,
01:20a Mac, and a budget option.
01:23So, now, something I didn't tell you earlier,
01:25at the school that I went to,
01:27all the engineering and business major students
01:30all had the same HP laptop,
01:33but then, all of the music tech
01:36and visual arts majors
01:38all got the same MacBook Pro.
01:41So, it was just different software,
01:43depending on what you had to do.
01:44I don't even know if this is still true
01:45or happening there,
01:46but the point is,
01:47if you're not going there
01:48and getting a laptop for free
01:49as part of your tuition,
01:50you might want to get a new computer
01:52to match your new work.
01:53So, in the Windows world,
01:54I'm going Dell XPS.
01:56Now, college is already expensive,
01:58so it's a big extra expense
01:59to add a high-end computer on top,
02:01but the way I think about it,
02:03this is a computer I'm hoping to use
02:05for at least the next four to six years straight.
02:08So, it's an investment in the future for sure.
02:10So, the XPS 13 is one of my favorite laptops.
02:13It's world-class, easy to recommend here,
02:15but I'm going to go with the 15.
02:17This XPS 15, if you can splurge,
02:19is getting you an even bigger,
02:21potentially 4K OLED display,
02:23higher-end RTX GPU,
02:25great keyboard,
02:26great bigger speakers,
02:27and this thing,
02:28you can expect to handle
02:30some pretty demanding workloads.
02:32Not just games in between classes,
02:34but potentially also getting
02:36some pretty serious coding, rendering,
02:38whatever you cut your teeth on at school,
02:40getting all that done.
02:41So, this is a good one.
02:42Now, in the Mac world,
02:43the M2 MacBook Air
02:44feels like the solid no-brainer.
02:47I consider the M1 MacBook Air
02:48because they did keep it around
02:50and it is cheaper,
02:51but again, I think new chip
02:52plus getting the new screen,
02:54new design, the ports, MagSafe,
02:56and all that is well worth it.
02:58Plus getting the new model
02:59has you future-proofed
03:00and getting pretty excellent performance
03:02across the board.
03:03The Mac versus Windows choice in college
03:06mostly basically comes down to software,
03:08not just games,
03:10but a lot of times,
03:11literally just whatever you're majoring in,
03:12there's going to be certain softwares
03:14that just work with certain types of computers,
03:16so that's important.
03:17But I think, yeah,
03:18no matter which one you get,
03:19you're getting a good one.
03:20But I do have a third option.
03:21It's more of a budget option,
03:22and I'm also pretty jealous
03:23if you are studying something
03:24that can make this work,
03:26but consider a Chromebook.
03:28So the Galaxy Chromebook 2
03:30is my favorite Chromebook right now.
03:32Of course, it's just Chrome OS,
03:33so you're doing everything in web apps,
03:35note-taking, emailing, collaborating, et cetera.
03:39But if that's you,
03:40then this is a lightweight, well-built Chromebook
03:43that should have your back.
03:44Now, no matter which machine you choose,
03:47I have one mouse recommendation,
03:50and that is the Logitech MX Master 3S.
03:54So this thing was quietly released a few weeks ago,
03:56which is fitting,
03:57because really,
03:58the biggest update over the MX Master 3
04:01is it's quieter.
04:05It also has a higher max DPI.
04:07Honestly, this is the most versatile,
04:09complete, easy-to-recommend mouse for me,
04:12and it has been for years.
04:13I've used an MX Master for a long time at this point.
04:15I even think you can game wirelessly with this thing,
04:18so yeah, easy, easy add there
04:20if you're looking for a mouse.
04:21Now, if you happen to be taking the right classes
04:23and you're in the right note-taking situation
04:26that a stylus and a tablet actually works for you,
04:30first of all, I'm jealous,
04:31but then second of all,
04:32the iPad Air and second-gen Apple Pencil are excellent.
04:37Now, there are a bunch of combos
04:38that will work for this too.
04:39Samsung's Galaxy Tabs and their styluses are really good,
04:42and there are lots of great Note apps on Android as well,
04:46but I'm going with the iPad Air here
04:47and the second-gen Apple Pencil
04:48that snaps right onto the side as the safe bet.
04:52Every time I review the iPad,
04:53I always give the pencil a shot just for kicks.
04:55Obviously, artists get a lot more use out of it,
04:58but I also found that taking math-related notes specifically
05:02when there's all kinds of formulas and structure to them,
05:05trying to keep up on a computer with a keyboard
05:08just doesn't cut it for me,
05:09so I always have to write this stuff down,
05:11but having a virtual notebook, that is pretty sick.
05:14The newest Air has the M1 chip.
05:15There could be an M2 version soon by the time you see this.
05:18I don't really know,
05:19but I also don't think it matters too much
05:21because iOS 16 is still iOS 16.
05:23All right, new smartphone for back to school?
05:25Yeah, sure, why not?
05:26Galaxy S22, or really anyone in that series,
05:30but I think specifically the base Galaxy S22,
05:32now that we're sort of in the middle of its cycle,
05:35is starting to see those discounts.
05:37I reviewed it back in January,
05:38and it still holds up as one of the best all-around phones.
05:42That's the thing about the phones that come out in January.
05:44We tend to forget about them later in the year,
05:46but S22 still has some of the best cameras,
05:49the best displays, excellent battery,
05:52and really good software.
05:53Plus, the DeX features are super dope.
05:55If that happens to work for your setup,
05:56maybe you have a monitor already,
05:57and you just plug that straight in.
05:59That could be cool too,
06:00so can't really go wrong with that as a new phone.
06:03Also, my daily driver lately has been an S21 Ultra,
06:07which is sort of interesting fact.
06:10I don't know if maybe that's worth a separate video.
06:12Maybe leave a thumbs up
06:13if you want to see a breakdown of that.
06:15But yeah, S22.
06:16Now, I've got some desk accessories here
06:18that I also really like that I found.
06:20You know, you're going off to college for the first time,
06:22you've got your dorm desk set up,
06:24you want to get some stuff going to customize it.
06:26That's what this is about.
06:27That's also desk accessories.
06:29That's a tongue twister.
06:30Try saying desk accessories.
06:33Desk accessories.
06:35But this is the college dorm
06:37where I made videos for a whole year
06:39and shared with a roommate.
06:41I think I did okay.
06:42But these are easily best if you have a device
06:45like an S22, for example, that wireless charges.
06:48So this Oddylite desk lamp has a wireless charger at its base.
06:53It's a fast wireless charger
06:54and it also happens to be a really nice little LED lamp.
06:57Three brightness settings, no flicker.
06:59You could go that route
07:00or just go straight up multi-device wireless charger
07:03for the dorm bedside.
07:04This one from Belkin is a go-to.
07:06Pro tip, if you have an Apple Watch
07:09and it's the Series 7 or later,
07:11make sure you look for a wireless charger
07:12that specifically supports the watch's new 15% faster
07:16wireless charging speed.
07:17It does make a pretty big difference.
07:18And then last but not least, headphones.
07:21So if you're going off to college,
07:22and this is from experience,
07:23if this is the first time you're going to be studying
07:25or doing homework in a noisy environment,
07:28noise canceling headphones can be a complete game changer.
07:32So that's why I'm putting Sony's WH-1000XM4 on this list.
07:36I considered putting the Mark 5s on here,
07:37but I think as a deal,
07:39the Mark 4s sound just about as good,
07:41but they fold so they fit easier in a backpack.
07:44They have almost all the same features
07:46and they're less expensive.
07:48So the Mark 4s are still awesome.
07:49I highly recommend them.
07:50Maybe the only downside being that they're not waterproof,
07:53but this is your new study hack.
07:55But the only reason I bring up water resistance
07:57for my student athletes out there
07:59is you can't really work out and sweat a lot in these
08:03and trust that they're going to last a long time.
08:06So you probably already have a go-to set
08:08of workout headphones,
08:09but you know, going off to school,
08:11might as well upgrade.
08:13So the Beats Studio Buds have been great for me.
08:16The shape, the fit, the features and the sound,
08:20pretty much everything about them.
08:21They are also IPX4 water resistant, of course.
08:24And there's just been so many waves of me
08:27going back and forth between recommending
08:29and not recommending Beats products over the years,
08:31but these are definitely on the really good side.
08:34The shape is so important.
08:35They stay in my ears for everything short of like sprinting
08:38or jumping and landing hard on the ground,
08:40but it's rare for my ears for something to fit this well.
08:43So yeah, go get you an upgraded pair of workout earbuds.
08:46You won't regret it.
08:47And that is it.
08:48There you have it.
08:49My first back to school set of recommendations ever.
08:53Let me know how I did,
08:54but I couldn't wait to make this video.
08:56So I was pretty pumped about it,
08:57but that's 10 things to send you back to school.
08:59And hey, shout out to everyone who graduated this summer.
09:01Best of luck over your next few years
09:03and may they be filled with tech.
09:05And thanks again to Best Buy for sponsoring this video.
09:07Everything I've talked about, you can find at a Best Buy.
