00:00Yo what's up guys, MKBHD here, welcome back to quarantine content, just a little entertainment
00:07for you while some of us are staying inside.
00:11I'm your host Marques Brownlee and you remember the Cybertruck, right?
00:16Made a lot of headlines, mean angles, no curves at all, pretty unconventional looking to say
00:22the least.
00:23But then, after that, do you remember all the articles that came out about the phone
00:26that was based on the Cybertruck that was going to come out just a few weeks later?
00:30Well, I have it here and this is perfect quarantine content because nobody's actually thinking
00:37about buying this phone, but I figured I'd check it out anyway because we just have that
00:42kind of time now.
00:43So this is called the Caviar iPhone 11 Pro Max Cyberphone.
00:50And I guess it's really appropriately named because that's really all this is, it's an
00:54iPhone 11 Pro built into a casing that looks somewhat like a Cybertruck, I guess.
01:01You know, there are definitely no curves to this body at all.
01:04It's very angular, it's a straight up rectangle, stands on its own, very industrial looking,
01:10so sure, I guess I see it.
01:11And it also, like the Cybertruck, is huge.
01:14So it turns the regular size iPhone into a really wide, heavy, brick-like object that
01:20would honestly probably be better as a self-defense projectile than anything else.
01:24The Cybertruck used cold-rolled stainless steel as its like outside body panels, giving
01:29it that distinctive look.
01:31The Cybertruck phone, well, can, the Cyber, can they call it, wait, hold on, Elon, can
01:37they call it the Cybertruck phone?
01:38Oh, it's the Cyberphone, right, okay, maybe that's safe.
01:42So the Cyberphone also uses bare metal, as you can tell, and it's titanium, they say.
01:48Now, they sent me this review sample, which they say is aluminum, but the final versions
01:53will be titanium if they ship any.
01:56But just overall, you get the picture, you already know what an iPhone is, and you know
01:59what it looks like.
02:00Just imagine it in a case made of curveless metal with some clicky button cutouts and
02:07grooves on the sides.
02:08In fact, that's really what it is, you know, the more you look at it, the more it just
02:11looks like an iPhone in a ridiculous case.
02:14And it costs $7,000.
02:18So yeah, this is why I preface this by saying it's ridiculous, no one in their right mind
02:25would pay thousands of dollars for an iPhone in a metal case, right?
02:30But then again, here's the thing about pricing.
02:34Why would a $1,000 phone wrapped in $300 of metal suddenly cost $7,000?
02:40You may be having flashbacks to the video I did not too long ago about why Apple's
02:44charging $700 for the wheels to the Mac Pro.
02:48Basically, the pricing has everything to do with this logo on the back here, Caviar.
02:54Yes, they're also the ones that made that $100,000 gold iPhone I reviewed last year.
03:00You can imagine if Insipio or Otterbox or somebody tried to sell a metal case for the
03:05iPhone like this, how much could they get away with selling a case like this for?
03:09$199 maybe, $249 at the most, but Caviar is doing their thing, going way over the
03:16top with the fancy packaging and then the whole bunch of separately packaged accessories
03:22in there and the ton of paperwork, including a certificate of authenticity and a bunch
03:28of advertising for their other products.
03:30You might see a sort of a theme here.
03:33So where you and I see a six-month-old iPhone wrapped in a metal case for $7,000, Caviar
03:40and its customers potentially see another tech-themed accessory collectible that happens
03:49to be riding the press wave of the actual Cybertruck.
03:52Bingo.
03:53It's kind of dumb, actually.
03:54Like, the more you actually hold this and just look at it and try to use it, the more
03:58you realize this case actually makes the iPhone experience worse, and I know a lot
04:04of people buy nice cars and put them in a garage and maybe those same people buy this
04:09phone and never use it, but if you try to use this, because that's my job, there's a
04:13couple things you might notice that are pretty bad.
04:15There's a sharp metal lip at the bottom of the phone where you're supposed to swipe up
04:19for all your gestures every time you unlock, so that's pretty unfortunate.
04:23The lightning port at the bottom is now recessed pretty far in, thanks to the thickness of
04:27the case, which means every time I try to use any higher quality lightning cable other
04:31than the cheap one that comes with the iPhone, it doesn't work because it doesn't actually
04:35reach the lightning port.
04:37It's too far recessed.
04:38Also, as you may have imagined, a thick metal case like this nukes wireless charging, so
04:43you can say goodbye to that feature too, and I haven't tested the antenna performance,
04:48but I can't imagine a case like this improves signal strength at all.
04:53And there's also this huge hole on the side because that's where the SIM card ejector
04:56tray is.
04:58Now, they included this fancy tool, which is metal, with both a pin and a hook on it.
05:03And that's because in order to fish the SIM card tray out of this case, you need both
05:08to eject it and then use that hook to fish it out basically, which is, I mean, I guess
05:14it's cool that they thought of that, but geez, now that is an ugly hole in the side of your
05:18case.
05:19So after all this, I thought, you know what?
05:21Maybe it's a durability angle.
05:23You know, this thing's a tank.
05:24The Cybertruck played the durability angle pretty well after all.
05:28Well, pretty well, but I figured, hey, you know what?
05:32Maybe this metal enclosure holds up to drops better, but little did I know it would have
05:38its own Cybertruck window moment.
05:40I dropped the phone one time on video.
05:44That's the only time I've dropped it.
05:45And just like the Cybertruck, the glass cracked.
05:48So it's not entirely a bulletproof strategy.
05:52Also, you may remember the promo videos with this dramatic folding piece over the front
05:56of the screen for protection and ergonomics, but this one doesn't actually have that.
06:02See, this is the Cybertruck phone or cyber phone light, and that one doesn't have any
06:08moving pieces, but on their site, you can step up to the full on cyber phone for $7,680,
06:15which gets you that fancy ergonomic plate thing, or you can step all the way up to
06:19the $20,000 cyber phone billionaire edition, where the body is made of silver with gold accents.
06:30Isn't silver a pretty soft metal, actually?
06:39Well, that probably won't hold up to drops well, but there you have it.
06:41The Cybertruck phone from all those videos and all those headlines does exist in real
06:45life and it's ridiculous and nobody should actually buy one.
06:49But you know what, as a reward for making it to the end of this video about a ridiculous
06:52thing you should never buy, you get a chance to win one.
06:55So I'll be giving away this, my cracked aluminum review sample of the cyber phone.
07:01I'll be giving it away on Twitter in the next few days, so definitely follow over there
07:04if you want to get entered and have a shot at it.
07:07And also let me know what you think about this thing in the comment section below.
07:11Also, you can always grab some merch if you want to support the channel, link below for
07:15that as well.
