00:00Hey guys, Dion from Dion Video Productions here, and today I'll be doing a basic Final Cut Pro X keyboard shortcuts video. Let's get started.
00:09Using keyboard shortcuts in Final Cut Pro X can make your editing more efficient and can save you time.
00:16In this video I've narrowed it down to 15 basic and some more advanced commands that I think are essential for editors.
00:23Let's start off with a few basic ones.
00:24First, we have A, B, V and S. These are very basic commands that allow you to select different tools within Final Cut Pro X.
00:34Let's go ahead and take a look.
00:36First, A will allow you to select the arrow tool. Pressing that on the keyboard will select it. This is basically the main tool used in Final Cut Pro X.
00:43This will allow you to select clips and move them throughout the project line.
00:47Next, we have B. Pressing B will activate the blade tool, as you can see right here. This will allow you to cut up the clip in whatever manner you like.
00:55Going back to A will allow you to cut and delete and move clips as well.
01:00Next, we have V. V is a very useful command that not many people actually know about from what I've seen.
01:07As you can see in this video, we have two audio sources. The audio from the camera and the music down below.
01:11As you can see, the audio from the camera is very quiet compared to the music.
01:15Let's say I want to preview the audio of the camera without hearing the music over it.
01:20I can delete the music and bring it back, but then have to render again.
01:23Or I can simply press V and this will hide the music.
01:26Playing the clip now, as you can see, will only play the audio from the camera itself.
01:30Pressing V will bring it right back and we'll be right back where we were.
01:34The nice thing about this is this requires no rendering, so it can be done very quickly and seamlessly.
01:39Next, we have S. S is basically what activates or deactivates the skimming tool.
01:45Currently, this is activated. As you can see, as I move my cursor throughout the project line, the clips are previewed.
01:51Pressing S will turn this off. Pressing S again will turn this back on.
01:56I've found personally that when I'm editing on, for example, my older computer,
02:01when rendering, it is best to have this off as this will possibly make your computer a little bit laggy.
02:05But on this computer, however, I like to keep it on.
02:08In general, I do recommend keeping it on as it just allows you to preview your clips for more precise editing.
02:14Next, we have Shift-C. So let's go ahead and select, let's say, this clip.
02:19Pressing Shift-C will allow you to crop the clip.
02:22As you can see, this opens up the crop menu and from here we can, let's say, we want to crop this, whatever, for example.
02:28Pressing Done will basically make that adjustment.
02:31Next, we have a very simple command, which is Command-A.
02:35What this will allow you to do is select all clips and elements and transitions and text within your project, basically everything.
02:40Say you want to move everything or get rid of everything and affect everything.
02:44This is a useful but simple command.
02:47Let's say we want to undo that cropping that we just did. As you can see, it doesn't look very nice.
02:52Doing that, we can press Command-Z. That will undo the crop.
02:55And pressing Command-Shift-Z will redo it.
03:00Next, we have Copy and Paste.
03:03Now, these are two, again, simple commands, but are very useful in editing.
03:06Let's say we have this slowed down clip here of a jump.
03:10Let's say we want to play that twice.
03:13Select the clip, press Command-C to copy, and Command-V to paste.
03:18As you can see, it's made a full copy of the video itself.
03:21As you can see, the copy is also played in slow motion.
03:25It literally duplicates this file again.
03:28Next, we have Command-X, which will allow you to delete a clip or cut a clip from the project line.
03:34Very simple, but useful as well.
03:37Next, we have Command-Shift-F.
03:40This will allow you to preview or play the project in full screen.
03:43Let's go ahead and press that, Command-Shift-F.
03:46As you can see, the project now plays right from Final Cut on full screen.
03:48This can be great for presenting, or color correcting, moving text, or making precise adjustments to your clip.
03:56Next, we have Command-9.
03:59This will allow you to show and hide the background tasks.
04:02Background tasks is this little window right here, which will show you what Final Cut Pro is doing in the background.
04:07Basically, rendering, importing, or sharing.
04:09Especially if you work on two monitors, like I usually would.
04:12This is very useful to have open on at least one monitor, as this will just allow you to see what's going on in the background.
04:17Pressing Command-Option-4 will open up Inspector.
04:20Let's go ahead and select the clip here.
04:22Command-Option-4 will open up Inspector.
04:26Now, Inspector is something, especially if you're working on a secondary display or a TV, always have this open,
04:31as this will have all of your editing options right there, and it's just easy to access right from the project line as well.
04:38And last but not least, we have Control-E, which will allow you to edit the clip.
04:42And last but not least, we have Control-E, which will show and hide Precision Editor.
04:47So let's go ahead and do that here.
04:49Control-E.
04:51There we go.
04:53So let's say we add a transition between a clip, or if you want to cut a certain area of the clip,
04:56this will give you a preview of both clips, as you can see, left being the top clip, right being the bottom clip.
05:01This will allow you to basically preview exactly where the transition is between the two clips.
05:05This can also be used, like I said, with transitions, text, or anything like that.
05:09So that about wraps up this video, guys.
05:12Here are 15 basic Final Cut Pro X shortcuts that should make your editing more efficient and easier.
05:17Thank you very much for watching, and I hope you enjoyed this video.
