00:00The Israeli Occupation Forces announced a land invasion in southern Lebanon.
00:13At the same time, the Saudi's Air Force bombed several cities in the Arab country.
00:23Hours before her surrender as President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum made 35 appointments
00:28of members of her government who will take office as of this Tuesday.
00:36In Brazil, the government reported a 58% nationwide drought, the highest in the last 50 years.
00:51Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from the Resolute Studios
00:55in Havana, Cuba.
00:56We begin with the news.
01:15Israeli Occupation Forces announced a land invasion in southern Lebanon.
01:18At the same time, the Saudi's Air Force bombed several cities in the Arab country.
01:23Local media reported clashes on the border region, although up to this moment, no entry
01:27into Lebanese soil has been registered.
01:29Simultaneously, Israel is carrying out air and artillery strikes against several cities,
01:34including the south of Beirut.
01:35In this context, the Hezbollah resistance movement in Lebanon says it is continuing
01:40its attacks against the movements of the Israeli forces inside the occupied Palestinian territories.
01:45Since September 23rd, Israel has been carrying out massive aerial bombardments against Lebanon,
01:49which left in less than a week, according to the UN, at least 700 dead and thousands wounded.
02:01The United Nations also reported more than 1 million people displaced across Lebanon
02:05due to ongoing Israeli bombardment.
02:08High Commissioner of the UN Refugee Agency Filippo Grandi stated that around 100,000
02:12refugees have arrived in Syria and that the outflow continues.
02:16According to the Syrian Red Crescent, more than 60% of the people arriving at Syrian
02:20border crossings are children.
02:27In this context, the Israeli regime shelled a house in the Ein al-Hilway Palestinian refugee
02:31camp in the southern Lebanon city of Sidon.
02:34The attack claimed the lives of six Palestinians, half of them children, while several people
02:38were wounded.
02:40Internal authorities reported in the last hours the use of white phosphorus against
02:43the Lebanese people, a chemical prohibited by international humanitarian law.
02:47On Monday afternoon, the Lebanese Ministry of Health reported 95 dead and 172 wounded
02:52in Israeli attacks in 24 hours.
02:57They are criminals.
03:02They don't kill people holding guns and weapons.
03:05They kill civilians.
03:06They were always like that, criminals.
03:12So in Palestine on Tuesday, an Israeli airstrike on a tent for displaced people in western
03:16Hanjounis killed seven people, including children, and left a large number of injured.
03:21The attack, that set a car on fire, came as the Syrian regime ramps up its aggression
03:25in Gaza, at the same time it carries out multiple raids across the occupied West Bank.
03:37It is considered a market for the displaced.
03:40Suddenly we heard the sound of a big explosion and saw a car on fire.
03:44When we went to see what happened, we saw the remains and children lying on the ground.
03:49The targeted place is a shopping place full of children and women and all of them are
03:53civilians.
03:55The number of martyrs is large.
03:58Women and children were in the place.
04:03The Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah attacked Mossad headquarters near Tel Aviv
04:07and other points in Israel.
04:09Hezbollah announced the attack with 54 missiles on the Gilad base of the Israeli military
04:13intelligence unit 8200 on the Mossad headquarters, which is located on the outskirts of Tel Aviv.
04:22So far, 50 missile launches have been carried out from Lebanon, the last of which hit the
04:26central region and forced thousands of Israelis to take refuge.
04:29According to local media, six wounded are reported as a result of the Hezbollah attack
04:33in response to the aggression against Lebanon and the genocide in Gaza.
04:44In Syria, local authorities reported that the Israeli army continues its aerial aggression
04:47with warplanes and drones against several points in Damascus.
04:51They also announced that three civilians were killed, among them a journalist, Safa Ahmed,
04:56leaving nine others wounded after the missile aggression.
04:59On the other hand, the Syrian air defense said that they responded to the missile and
05:03drone attack and shot down most of them but could not prevent the killing of three civilians.
05:14And the Foreign Intelligence Service of Russia denounces that the West and the Ukrainian
05:18regime are planning a chemical weapons attack in conjunction with Syrian terrorists.
05:22The Russian Commission in Syria warned on a report that the false positive operation
05:27would be conducted in Idlib Governorate, as they intend to hold Moscow and Damascus responsible
05:32for it right after.
05:34The Commission unfolded that terrorists would use drones against the Russian airspace forces
05:38in their facilities in order to detonate a chlorine canister.
05:41The Intelligence Service reaffirmed that the staged chemical attacks on Syria won't help
05:45the United States and allies in their attempt to undermine Russia's authority in the global
05:49south.
05:52Meanwhile, the Yemeni Armed Forces reported to have successfully hit Israeli military
05:59positions in occupied Jaffa.
06:05The Yemeni Armed Forces Air Force targeted a military site of the Israeli enemy in the
06:09occupied Jaffa area using a Jaffa drone.
06:14Additionally, it targeted military sites in the Amal Rashrash area with four Samad-4 drones.
06:23By the grace of God, both operations achieved their objectives successfully.
06:29Meanwhile in Turkey, a President receptive ordered an call on September 30 for the United
06:33Nations General Assembly to urgently consider using force in Gaza, invoking the 1950 United
06:39for Peace resolution.
06:41Today, protecting Palestine and Lebanon means protecting humanity, protecting peace and
06:50the culture of coexistence of different people.
06:53The Turkish President also stressed the importance of protecting Palestine and Lebanon and calling
06:58the world to unite against Israel's barbarism.
07:03Today, protecting Palestine and Lebanon means protecting humanity, protecting peace and
07:10the culture of coexistence of different beliefs.
07:16I invite the Islamic world and all conscientious countries of the world to unite against this
07:21modern barbarism.
07:25It should be known that every day that the alliance of humanity against Israel is not
07:30established, the danger will grow.
07:33Let's now take a short break, but remember you can join us on TikTok at TELUS for English.
07:38We will find news in different formats, news updates and much more.
07:42Stay with us.
07:53Welcome back.
07:54On October 1st, President Andres Manuel López Obrador hands over the presidential satch
07:58to Mexico's first female president, Claudia Sheinbaum.
08:01Afterwards, he has promised he will retire from public life.
08:05This is a piece prepared by our colleague Antonio Aranda to learn more about this character
08:09of the Latin American left.
08:14Andres Manuel López Obrador concluded his presidential term on September 30th.
08:19Several pollsters indicate that his popularity levels remain at a 77% approval.
08:28López Obrador has been a militant on the left practically all his life.
08:35He was a candidate for the presidency of the republic three times.
08:38In 2018, he won the victory for Morena, a political party he founded, obtaining more
08:43than 30 million votes, the most voted president in history until then.
08:52And I will not fail you.
08:54We are going to apply the three basic principles.
08:58Do not lie.
08:59Do not steal.
09:00Do not betray the people.
09:02Long live Mexico.
09:04Long live Mexico.
09:07Polemic, tough, fierce, combative, intelligent, these are characteristics that his own adversaries
09:13recognize in him on the political arena because he is not afraid to call things by their name.
09:21Those who defame, slander and accuse me are those who believe they are the lords and masters
09:26of Mexico.
09:29They are the ones who really dominate and rule in the leadership of the PRI and the
09:33PAN parties.
09:36They are the ones who use the trick of calling populism or paternalism to the little that
09:40is destined for the benefit of the majorities, but call promotion or rescue to the large
09:45amount that is given to the rapacious minorities.
09:52Born on November 13, 1953 in the municipality of Mocaspana, Tabasco, before becoming president,
09:58the main position he held was that of head of government of Mexico City in the year 2000,
10:02from which he was removed from office.
10:04His main cause throughout his political career can be summed up in one sentence.
10:10And that preference be given to the humble people, for the good of all Mexicans, first
10:13be the poor.
10:17He has a degree in political science and public administration from the UNAM.
10:21He was forged in the social struggles of country and indigenous people against government
10:25abuses in his native Tabasco and social mobilization has always been one of his strengths.
10:34Let's keep calm.
10:36And notice that I am asking you for something today.
10:39When we were assaulted, hated for the same reason that many love him, being a man of
10:46the people.
10:48Lopez Obrador leaves a legacy of transformation in Mexico that includes several reforms aimed
10:52at eradicating corruption in government.
10:58The moral economy worked.
11:01There was no corruption, there were no luxuries in the government.
11:05What we saved was used to fight poverty.
11:08The minimum wage increased, there were jobs, healthy public finances.
11:13For the first time in 50 years, there was no devaluation.
11:17We did it all together, thank you.
11:22Lopez Obrador will close his government with more than 1,450 conferences held from the
11:27National Palace.
11:29The last one was officially held on Friday, September 27, and he said goodbye with a phrase
11:33dedicated to the opposition, conservatives and neoliberals.
11:38They couldn't with us, they did to us what the wind did to Juárez, nothing.
11:44Lopez Obrador had his last day of activities as president on Monday, September 30.
11:50And on Tuesday, October 1, he will hand over the presidential sash to Claudia Sheinbaum
11:54and retire from public life.
11:57Claudia Sheinbaum will become the first woman constitutional president of Mexico.
12:04Everything is ready for the ceremony, but will the protocol be like a correspondent
12:08Daniel Rosas tells us.
12:13With the popularity rating of more than 70%, Claudia Sheinbaum will receive the presidential
12:17sash this Tuesday and will be sworn in before the constitution, officially beginning her
12:21six-year term.
12:26Why didn't a woman become president 20 or 40 or 50 years ago?
12:32Because our society had very different characteristics of structure, hierarchy and patriarchy that
12:39have been somewhat diluted but have not disappeared.
12:47It took 200 years of independent Mexico and 65 holders of the executive power to have
12:51the first female president, a female, as Sheinbaum emphasizes.
12:56That a woman reaches a government or a position of responsibility does not in itself guarantee
13:01a different exercise of power, but I would like to take the phrase, time of women, in
13:07its plural sense.
13:12Praise used by the next president, who will receive from López Obrador the leadership
13:15of the country for the next six years.
13:20I'm also very happy because I'm going to hand over the presidential sash to an exceptional
13:25woman, to a humanist.
13:33The chamber of deputies already has security measures in place to receive heads of state
13:37and representatives from other countries invited to the ceremony, who have arrived since the
13:42weekend to witness the beginning of a new era.
13:46I am ready.
13:48I am strong.
13:49People are ready to begin the second stage of the fourth transformation of Mexico's public
13:54life.
13:59This October 1st, Claudia Sheinbaum will become the 27th woman president in the world,
14:03the first in Mexico and North America.
14:05In the afternoon, she will meet with the people in the Zocalo, in Mexico City, before giving
14:09her first morning conference and going to the southern state of Guerrero to supervise
14:13support for those affected by Hurricane John.
14:23Hours before her serving as president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum made 35 appointments of
14:28members of her government, who will take office as of this Tuesday.
14:32Among those appointed are government officials of outgoing President Andrés Manuel López
14:35Obrador, former members of his cabinet, and the ratification of six politicians.
14:40The head of the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property, the Undersecretary of Government,
14:43the head of the Agrarian Attorney General's Office, among others, were announced through
14:47a press release.
14:48Regarding the Armed Forces, the Undersecretary of National Defense, the Undersecretary of
14:52the Navy, and the General Director of the Inter-Oceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec
14:57were announced.
15:03In other news, the President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, denounced that the attacks
15:07on Lebanon, the genocide in Gaza, and the threats against Iran are part of a project
15:11of domination and colonization of the Middle East.
15:14On Monday, during his program with Maduro Mas, the Venezuelan head of state regretted
15:19that the United Nations has entered into what he referred to as a vacuum and a process of
15:24attrition.
15:25In addition, he denounced that the United States is delivering weapons for the Israeli
15:29Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to launch a campaign of aggression in order to dominate
15:35the region and take control of the energy resources.
15:38Furthermore, President Maduro referred to the wars perpetrated by Washington as allies
15:41against Arab and Muslim countries, aligned with the project of domination that currently
15:45has the Tel Aviv regime as its main executor.
15:54They already tried to destroy Syria.
15:56They destroyed Libya.
15:58In the past, they invented there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq and killed a million
16:02Iraqis.
16:09They invaded Iraq.
16:11It is a war on the Arab peoples, the Muslim peoples.
16:14It is a war to colonize the whole of the known Middle East.
16:17What is behind this offensive?
16:22The threats against Iraq.
16:24The threats against Iran.
16:25The criminal attacks on Yemen.
16:30The attempt to colonize, to conquer the territory of the Arab people in Lebanon.
16:38There is a project of domination and colonization of the Arab, Muslim and Middle Eastern world.
16:46And in France, journalist Julian Assange affirmed before the Council of Europe in Strasbourg
16:50that if he is free, it is because he declared himself guilty of having done journalism.
16:55In his first statements after spending 12 years in the maximum security prison of Belmarsh
16:59in the United Kingdom, Assange pointed out that his agreement with the U.S. justice system
17:03prevents him from denouncing the country in relation to his extradition request, as well
17:08as requesting information about the events that took place.
17:11The WikiLeaks founder's statements came a day before the Assembly of the Council of
17:14Europe votes on a resolution that dubs him as a political prisoner and warns about the
17:19deterrent effect that his arrest could have had on the journalistic profession.
17:28Ladies and gentlemen, the transition from years of confinement in a maximum security
17:34prison to being here before the representatives of 46 nations and 700 million people is a
17:41profound and a surreal shift.
17:45The experience of isolation for years in a small cell is difficult to convey.
17:52It strips away one's sense of self, leaving only the raw essence of existence.
17:59I am yet not fully equipped to speak about what I have endured, the relentless struggle
18:08to stay alive, both physically and mentally.
18:13In addition, Assange reaffirmed that his freedom does not imply that the system works, since
18:16he had to plead guilty for the fact of doing journalism and denouncing U.S. war crimes.
18:23Justice for me is now precluded as the U.S. government insisted in writing into its plea
18:30agreement that I cannot file a case at the European Court of Human Rights or even a Freedom
18:36of Information Act request over what it did to me as a result of its expedition request.
18:43I want to be totally clear.
18:47I am not free today because the system worked.
18:50I am free today, after years of incarceration, because I pled guilty to journalism.

19:36Welcome back.
19:37The Brazilian government reported a 58% nationwide drought, the highest in the last 50 years.
19:43The extreme drought reduced the death of some rivers in the Amazon by about 70 centimeters,
19:47which have a death of up to 14 meters, leaving several regions incommunicated, in addition
19:52to aggravating the climate crisis in different places.
19:55These conditions are helping the spread of forest fires in a large part of Brazil, which
20:00reached unprecedented numbers in August and September and currently totaled 931 mainly
20:05in the Amazon.
20:06The Minister of the Environment, Marina Selva, cited data on the seriousness of the climate
20:11crisis to emphasize the need to preserve nature, which is the most important economic source
20:15for Brazil and all South America.
20:23In Nepal, rescuers on Tuesday searched for missing people and tried to recover the bodies
20:28of some of the 200 killed in flooding and landslides.
20:31The weather continued to improve, and workers were clearing the highways that were blocked
20:35by landslides.
20:36Nepal's police said the death toll by Tuesday had reached 136, while 143 people had been
20:42injured.
20:43There were still 28 people who were reported missing, and searches were continuing for
20:47them.
20:48Schools and colleges were closed until Tuesday to help clean up the premises and to give
20:52students time to recover.
20:54The disaster came just ahead of the country's biggest festival, Dasain, which begins on
20:59Thursday when people return home to celebrate with their families.
21:09In the United States, a confirmed death toll in six southeastern states in the wake of
21:13Hurricane Helen reached 119 on Monday, and the number is expected to continue to increase.
21:20According to the authorities, the toll was expected to rise further as emergency responders
21:25continue search and rescue efforts in western North Carolina, where floodwaters wiped out
21:30entire neighborhoods and knocked out the front surface.
21:32In other states, such as Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, high winds and
21:37torrential rain pummeled towns and cities, where homes were destroyed, roads flooded
21:43and power cut off to millions.
21:52On Tuesday, the Glacier Monitoring in Switzerland, GLAMOS, reported that glaciers continue melting
21:57down at an above-average rate despite a very snowy winter.
22:01Therefore, the attrition of the glaciers' volume has been around 1.2 km, that is 2.5%
22:07of the total, just by 2024.
22:10In addition, GLAMOS scientists noted that at the end of this year, the Swiss glacier
22:14will count up with 30 cubic kilometers less than by 2000, amounting to 46.4 cubic kilometers.
22:21Experts further revealed that substantial amounts of Saharan dust into the Alps polluted
22:25snow, which absorbed more heat and melted faster.
22:29Director of GLAMOS provided more details on the phenomenon.
22:35The year 2024 was actually very good for the glaciers, because we had a lot of snow
22:40in winter, but two very warm summer months, July and August, were very warm, especially
22:46at high altitudes.
22:48August was even the warmest month ever, for example at Jungfraujoch, at 3500 meters, and
22:55this has really resulted in a complete meltdown of these massive snow amounts of winter, and
23:02finally, again, a loss of glaciers.
23:06Russian President Vladimir Putin praised the development of relations with China, which
23:0995% of payments in national currencies.
23:13On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the People's Republic
23:16of China, the Russian President emphasized the fruitful development of relations with
23:20the Asian country.
23:22Putin considered that despite the difficult international situation, the two countries
23:26have recently managed to significantly increase the volume of trade and implement many large-scale
23:31bilateral projects in various fields.
23:33Likewise, the Russian President reaffirmed his readiness to continue to work together
23:38with Beijing to further strengthen bilateral ties for the benefit of their peoples.
23:42At this, we have come to the end of this newsbrief.
