00:00Lea Sheinbaum took to the stage late on Sunday night as the president-elect of Mexico,
00:05the first female president in the country's history.
00:12I'd like to thank the millions of Mexican women and men who decided to cast their vote for us
00:20on this historic day to help move forward the fourth transformation of public life of our
00:29country. Preliminary results give Sheinbaum a lead of over 30 percentage points ahead of
00:36her main challenger Xochitl Galvez, forecasting a landslide victory. Sunday's election was mostly
00:42peaceful, though two people were shot dead at polling stations in the state of Puebla.
00:47Sheinbaum's supporters gathered at the Zócalo, Mexico City's main square,
00:52where they hailed a historic day.
00:55We feel very, very proud, and we hope that the elections will be respected.
01:00Very early on, I went to my polling station at eight in the morning,
01:04and there were already quite a lot of people, and that was seen throughout the Mexican Republic.
01:10Xochitl Galvez also spoke on Sunday, declaring election day a victory for her coalition,
01:15but she was referring mainly to legislative and municipal elections.
01:19But even those victories may be mitigated.
01:22Sheinbaum said her Morena party expects to secure a two-thirds majority in the national parliament,
01:28giving her extra scope to push legislation through.
