00:00Do some granny's grades. This is ladies and gentlemen, we'll take a look back the most recent 49er game
00:05We go position group by position group and mark. Randy hands them out
00:12All right, let's get to it 49ers fell to the Vikings week to 23 to 17 was the final score
00:18Let's start with my first of seven different groups will go quarterback skill positions
00:23Which is running back wide receivers tight ends
00:26Offensive line the front seven, which is the down lineman and the linebackers
00:30Secondary special teams and coaching will begin as always with the quarterback
00:35This might be a big one. I don't know. I might get a lot of people disagreeing with me
00:39I wasn't that harsh on Brock gave him a C plus for his performance on Sunday against the Vikings
00:44What do you think C pluses? I think that's in the range
00:48I think that a straight C would have been maybe more appropriate. I think and we mark and I talked about it
00:54He did make some big-time throws
00:57more red zone
00:59Inefficiency two big turnovers. So it certainly wasn't an a or a B
01:03I don't want to quibble with C plus or C C minus feels a little too harsh
01:08But I think C plus is in the range. Yep. C plus is actually exactly where my mind went yesterday
01:12Yours went see mine went C plus I'll agree with it
01:15I'll agree with it completely like you've got you've got a couple of very very damaging mistakes in there
01:20You also have as you said you have some dot throws some big plays you have over 300 yards passing
01:27You had your first touchdown pass of the year. Not all bad for Brock
01:31C plus feels about right. Yeah
01:33Yeah
01:34I also think part of the reason why I wasn't a little more harsh was
01:37when you're under pressure as much as Brock was and what you're talking about with lack of
01:41Separation from your receivers that you're throwing through so much of what hindered the offense
01:46Maybe you blame it on Brock, but it what he wasn't really helped out by anyone around him either
01:50I agree like again to me the the trenches of the football
01:54Well, let's get we'll get to those grades the trenches of the football game were not in the Niners favor for the most part
01:59Yeah, all right up next skill position. So this is running backs wide receivers and tight ends same great as quarterback
02:05I gave him a C plus. What was the thinking?
02:08Jordan Mason was the buoy that kept them up. I wasn't particularly impressed by Debo Samuel despite his numbers
02:15Garbage time
02:17Garbage time yards that he got in there stretch down the stretch. And again what we're talking about with the quarterbacks
02:23I I didn't think some of this is Iuke. I thought kiddo was good
02:27There wasn't a lot of help that the skill position players
02:31Provided Brock Purdy they could have you know, maybe got open a little bit more and provided easy access
02:37Oh a C plus buoyed by Jordan Mason. What do you think? I would lean toward B- and I think that
02:42Kyle use check deserves a lot of credit
02:45He had a couple of great catches including the toe tapper on the sideline
02:48and I don't want to gloss over Jordan Mason in his second start going 20 for a hundred yards and
02:55He was really the only running threat and early in the game
02:59Outside of that first drive driver. They didn't run it at all. He was the guy who was moving the chains
03:04I thought that he was terrific again George Kittle was a matchup problem
03:09And you know, I you did what he could do with the limited number of targets that he got. I have a question
03:15Jacob Cowling is a skill position player
03:19However, his mistake happened within the framework of special teams. So does that count?
03:24I guess it's up to you in each individual's interpretation that for me would go under special
03:28Okay, also look at this the same argument you and I had last week about where's the demerit to move them down now
03:35I don't think they were deserving of an a
03:38But they also didn't make any huge mistakes Jordan Mason fumbled
03:42But it was kind of on his way down and he fell on it and so no harm there
03:46So that's why I was asking about cowling because he also of course fumbled that that punt return
03:52But yeah, like I think you knock it up to a B minus
03:55I'm with you dibs because for the most part those guys didn't make any major mistakes
03:59Even though they didn't perform in a sparkly way either agreed
04:03And you know, I thought that Kittle was terrific and yeah Debo
04:07I don't know if it was quite garbage time because they were only down by two scores
04:10But he did pad his numbers a little bit late with some of that
04:14But Juwan Jennings again with a couple of big catches including the fourth down
04:19Conley with a grab Eric Saubert with a couple in San Francisco an odyssey
04:24Sports station always live in the free odyssey app twitch and YouTube powered by first NorCal credit union for a low rate auto loan apply
04:31Online or just ask for first NorCal financing at the dealer
04:36Grandi back to you up next the offensive line. This is where it gets a little uglier
04:41I should say it hasn't been great so far offensive line
04:44I gave them a d-plus my thinking was it would be worse
04:47But half of their job was the run game and the run game worked very well
04:50But the the pass blocking that was pretty bad all game long
04:54So a d-plus for the offensive line for me how many penalties do we have that in front of us?
04:59I had the box score right here the total penalties for the team
05:03Four for thirty okay, and I know Trent had one and I believe the majority of those were offensive line
05:11There was a illegal formation penalty. There was a false start on Trent Williams
05:16So only four penalties though except that against the nine. Yeah, I'm not gonna argue with your with your d-plus
05:22I think that it's somewhere in that range the bottom line is is they were
05:27outperformed by their counterparts for sure and
05:31And yeah Brock Purdy did not have
05:34The for the most part the time that he needed and when you add in a few penalties
05:39six sacks
05:41Whether some are on Brock or not okay, but six sacks offensive lines gonna get a bad grade
05:47It's always tough to parse it out, and I would I would go see minus
05:51Yeah
05:53No because of you know it's tough with Trent Williams because you look at his run blocking
05:59It was terrific pass blocking was problematic left side of the line probably gets a BB minus
06:07Right side of the line and the center D minus to an F
06:11So when you look at the whole group you had a couple of guys and Trent Williams was not terrible
06:16He's not as good as he usually was yeah the right side of the old line
06:20Poonie and the center they had a lot of issues in the game
06:24So the five-man unit and you have to do look at it as a unit for sure C-minus
06:29I don't argue with the d-plus they were not great
06:34Sorry about that
06:36Front seven this is maybe the most difficult one for me because you're kind of morphing a couple of position groups together
06:43The defensive line your down lineman and your linebackers obviously the star of the game for the Niners was Fred Warner
06:49And he's the reason why this grade is somewhat decent for the front seven as a whole
06:54I gave them a b-plus our best grade of the day so far
06:58But that is largely because Fred Warner was in a plus plus plus plus and everyone else was not great Fred was a stud
07:05Nick was certainly good enough, but that's two players, and you said there are seven of them because they're called what a front
07:12Seven and so that means that outside of those two
07:16I would argue that you got very little from that position group those two are there and Fred
07:23Saved the game from getting out of hand, so I'll grant you that
07:27but b-plus feels a little too easy for my
07:31Liking I I could have wrapped my head around to be felt more like a b-minus to me
07:37Because you do have guys like Javon Hargrave and Leonard Floyd who just were unable to really
07:44Make a mark in this football game. You got a whole game to make a mark. You're going to up against Sam Darnold
07:49This is a doable thing and they didn't do it
07:52Yeah
07:52I I would give him a c-plus and I think he nailed it with Fred and also Nick Bosa
07:58I would have him in the a category, but other than that you allowed Ty Chandler
08:04Yes, Ty Chandler not Tyson Chandler the former center from Los Angeles
08:08Ty Chandler 82 yards on 10 carries, so I mean you got gashed in the run game Sam Darnold
08:16You only got to him a few times and outside of Nick Bosa
08:19Floyd was a no-show Javon Hargrave continues to struggle
08:23I didn't didn't think that the front seven was as effective and I put part of it on the coordinator Nick Sorenson because
08:30You didn't heat up
08:32Darnold at all you blitzed four times
08:34You thought that you could get it done with your base with your four-man rush, and you didn't so
08:38I give him a c-plus the front seven
08:40Yeah, that's fair. I get your guys's points up next is the secondary
08:45I had a this one was strange because the last drive
08:48I think knocked the secondary down a couple of pegs
08:51They had a bunch of third and long conversions the Vikings did there and that was without Justin Jefferson on the field
08:56That was disappointing
08:57I ultimately settled on a c-minus for the secondary because I thought largely for the most part they did a pretty decent job
09:04You have the 97-yard touchdown obviously one mistake in the first half that was terrible and that can never happen
09:10And then you had the final drive that I'm talking about otherwise, but Donald throws for 268
09:1697 was on one bad play
09:18Jefferson
09:19133 yards one play for 97 yards other than that one mistake
09:25This was largely a pretty good day for the secondary. I know you can't just forget about one play
09:29I don't think it was as bad as a lot of people do so
09:32I'm settling on a c-minus for the secondary. Yeah, I guess I can work with that
09:37I the only rebuttal I would have that would make sorry make me feel like it might be a little bit more in the
09:43D-plus range, I guess the here's the thing that's in the set in the favor of the secondary
09:49You said some of it plus
09:50I also think that the 97-yard play to Justin Jefferson is a little bit more on the defensive coaching staff than it is on
09:57the players with that said
10:00What was your assignment and I would argue that for half the game
10:05the receiving core quarterback combo that you got as a secondary was
10:12Sam Darnold
10:14Jalen Naylor and
10:16Trent Shurfield and a little bit of Brandon Powell. Yep. That's the group that you had to guard
10:23I forgot about Johnny munt
10:26Who go ducks?
10:28No
10:30Jefferson for half the game. No Jordan Addison at all. No TJ Hockinson and
10:36last year's backup quarterback throwing the ball I
10:41Hold you to a higher standard than that. I'm gonna knock him down below what you said below a c-minus
10:46Yes, I was thinking c-minus
10:47but you're kind of swaying me because I was thinking about the last scoring drive and I'm just looking at the names and it was
10:54Powell and munt and Naylor and munt and Powell and
10:58These are third down conversions munt dude munt
11:02You have no answer for munt and when you watch
11:06Especially the the third and eight pass to Naylor that went for 26 yards
11:10There was confusion and the 97-yard pass play for the touchdown
11:14There was confusion. Sure. I thought the secondary looked a little bit slow a step slow
11:20There was definitely confusion on a lot of it including that drive
11:23So I was going c-minus granny, but I think it might be a d-plus. Damn you agreed with Willard, huh?
11:28Well, he kind of swayed me because as I'm looking at it, thank you. Well, and they didn't have Hawkinson
11:33You didn't have Addison or Madison. I'm good in debate class now and you can put out a point
11:39Well, you don't have to agree with it
11:41But I can put out a point now and when I mentioned munt and you munt munt
11:46When when you got Johnny munt and you don't have an answer for Johnny munt
11:50Then it goes from a c-minus to a d-plus
11:55Fair enough fair enough. All right up next is special teams. I know this is where dibs disagrees with me as well
12:01Obviously, there was the blocked punt. Yeah, Mitch wish now ski just becoming an observer, which was odd
12:08There was the muffed punt by Jacob Cowling. They fell on it didn't ultimately hurt them that bad
12:12Although the next play I think pretty through an interception that turned into a touchdown
12:17There was D Bo Sam
12:18You're bringing the ball out of the end zone and only getting out to like the 15 and then a penalty on top of it
12:23Yep, not great all of that considered. It didn't really hurt you a ton
12:28It's why I know dibs was going for an F. I gave the special teams unit a d-plus
12:34It's an F. It's an F. I think it's an F because the way that the punt was blocked was an absolute
12:41Giveaway, it was a give up
12:43It was a sieve you let a guy straight through the B gap and he had a straight line and that thing was blocked
12:49Easily, it wasn't one of these athletic plays where the guy goes around the corner and gets a piece of it
12:54That thing was smothered. And yeah, Mitch wish now ski did the the staring contest the muff pun
13:00It was so bad Isaac. Yeah, Adam recovered it. He recovered two fumbles on the day
13:04By the way, yeah, Adam the kick return was a debacle from Debo taking it from three yards deep
13:10All right, you know he had momentum going forward those three plays while not directly leading to points all of them
13:16Those were disastrous plays they get an F
13:19Did that the am I remembering this correctly the pump block led to the first quarter field goal field goal the field goal?
13:26He fans did not allow them anything, but it did but it did only it led to points. Yeah, correct
13:30It led to points. All right, so and you said d-plus d-plus. I'm gonna split the difference with the two of you
13:35I'm gonna go D and the only reason that I'm gonna say that I'm gonna agree that d-plus is too soft because
13:42Because of all the things you just said dibs
13:44The reason I'm not gonna give an F is and again as a teacher an F means you didn't do squat
13:51you did nothing and
13:53Jake Moody is perfect on the year
13:56And so I got to give them points for something because they showed up they did their assignment. They didn't do it. Well
14:04But therefore
14:05You get a D
14:07That's what I would give him. Okay. Yeah. Yep. Jake Moody perfect field goals and extra points
14:12Not many only three kicks in total, but you know he was good overall. Okay last one is the coaching I
14:19Gave coaching overall a c-plus for this one
14:22I'm probably a little more encouraged just because I saw Kyle Shanahan be aggressive and I
14:28Want him to be aggressive and it's one of my sticking points with Shanahan for years now
14:33The fact that he went for it twice on fourth downs on one drive. I was trying to scour
14:39Game logs and try to find another time where he's gone for it on fourth down multiple times in a single drive
14:44I couldn't get through every single game, but I hadn't found one. I was so ecstatic
14:48He did that of course it failed the fourth and goal from the two at the end of that long drive
14:53He went for it again later on didn't get that one either
14:55But I was encouraged by that overall there were some other mistakes defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen and the Justin Jefferson touchdown debacle all of that
15:03I get it overall
15:05I might be a little bit lighter on this because I was just so eager to see Shanahan be aggressive finally
15:10Even though it didn't pay off so c-plus for me for coaching
15:13I see minus and that's generous
15:16but the more I've looked at the film and looked at what went wrong in this game and the fact that they only blitz four
15:21times and
15:23You know Kyle Shanahan electing to go for it on fourth and two instead of taking the three the 97-yard
15:30debacle on the big touchdown to Justin Jefferson where
15:33Inexplicably, you don't have your best corner guarding their best receiver
15:38You got two safeties deep neither of whom is really a good deep cover guy those coaching mistakes for me are
15:46inexcusable
15:47You said C minus yeah, and granny you said C plus
15:51Correct it's an a Kyle Shanahan is the greatest coach who has ever lived
15:57now I I think
16:00I'm gonna lean toward you dibs on this one
16:02I don't think it's a D
16:05But I think a C-minus sounds about right to me and and because I do look at it collectively
16:11The the position that the defensive coordinator put their players in a couple of times
16:16Did not work
16:17I did not like and then I'll go with a lot of the people who have called us
16:22In the 48 hours since and just talk about what feels like
16:28An inability to adjust you know you were triggered by
16:32Brock Purdy going over to Brian floors and said I love your scheme
16:36This is great. This is a pretty cool scheme that you got there. You didn't like that
16:41I'll tell you what I didn't like about it
16:42You knew it was coming and you seemingly couldn't do anything about it like you're the scheme master
16:48You're supposed to be able to out scheme
16:52Brian Flores, and I know that that's complicated because there's execution involved in that
16:58You can like have the right scheme, and if your players don't execute then
17:03This is what you get
17:04but it felt like I would love to be able to if you're supposed to be able to scheme people open and
17:10The Niners are getting open worse than anyone in the entire league and Brock doesn't have time
17:15And he's holding the ball a little bit too long
17:18These are the things that are all sort of involved in the timing in the scheme of it
17:22And and Kyle's got to wear that like it feels like there there were things out there that they just couldn't adjust to on the
17:29Fly and and it bit him it bit him in the biggest moments, so yeah, I'll lean toward where you said C-
