00:00Remember the Niners are 1-0. This is Willard and Dibbs, and we will do this the day after games throughout the coming season.
00:08And that is, once we see them play, the next day, we got to go to Grandy's grades.
00:15Alright. So yeah, I put out a report card every night after, or every day if it's a day game.
00:20But last night, of course, on Monday Night Football, with seven different categories.
00:24Quarterback, skill positions, offensive line, front seven, secondary, special teams, and coaching.
00:32We'll start at the top with the quarterback. You guys might be upset at me, but I'm giving Brock Purdy a B-plus for his performance last night.
00:39What do you think?
00:39You upset at B-plus?
00:40No, I like a B-plus there. I mean, he was... B-plus is probably better than fine.
00:45It's better than fine.
00:46It's good. It's good with a slight up-lilt in the voice. It's good. It's B-plus.
00:50I'm not upset at B-plus because I just think it's the nature of the way that game played.
00:55It's not a criticism of anything Brock did, and that's sort of where I stand.
00:58I don't think there was really a whole lot to pick at, unless you're one of these people that's like,
01:03every throw must be absolutely... Like, he overthrew Juszczak.
01:06If you want to question his decision on the throw to Saubert, that's fine.
01:10I don't think there was anything really to criticize.
01:13There also didn't happen to be anything where you were like,
01:16Wow!
01:17Exactly.
01:17Except for the throw that Ayyuk didn't catch.
01:20That was a wild throw.
01:21It's a great throw.
01:22That was a wild throw, and he didn't catch it.
01:25Like, that'd be my question to you, Granny. If Ayyuk catches that, is your grade different?
01:29No. That throw is still a plus for Brock Curry.
01:32That's not on him. It affects his stats, yeah, but this is deeper than the box score.
01:36Okay, alright. But yeah, B-plus is very good.
01:40Yeah, he's that guy in the group project who is cashing in from the work of other people around him.
01:45It's great.
01:45B-plus for Brock Purdy at quarterback.
01:49Go to the restroom.
01:50Up next, skill position. So this is wide receivers, running backs, and tight ends.
01:55Okay.
01:55I gave them a flat A. An A for the skill position.
01:58Okay, now I'm intrigued. Now I'm intrigued.
02:02So Brock Purdy gets a B-plus, but the people who dropped his passes in the end zone...
02:08I know this is a lot of people you're talking about, and Jordan Mason is one of them.
02:12Yeah.
02:13He is fantastic. Debo Samuel, Yeoman's work, always willing to do these things.
02:18George Kittle had four catches, obviously also a big part of the blocking game.
02:22Juwan Jennings was the leading receiver. I get where you're coming from there.
02:25I mean, you gotta give him like an A-minus, though, for a couple of Ayyuk drops, don't you?
02:31If it wasn't Ayyuk, the group would get an A-plus.
02:33Okay.
02:34Ayyuk's the only negative in this group, in my opinion.
02:36Even Juszczyk caught a couple of passes, as you were talking about earlier.
02:39Yeah, he could have gotten two more yards, but anyway.
02:41I got it as an A-minus just because of the Ayyuk drops.
02:44And also, I don't believe in A-pluses.
02:47A is the best you can get.
02:49For me, there is no such thing as an A-plus, but we can philosophically get into that another time.
02:53Maybe not for you, though.
02:54I did think, well, you're in an era where everybody gets an A anyway.
02:58It's Candy Soft, Windsor High, born in 1997.
03:02Alright, can I challenge you for a second on this?
03:05Challenge away. You just talked about the bar being low.
03:07No, but what is 100% to you? Is that an A?
03:10That's an A.
03:11Then why is 95% also an A?
03:13Because you get the range of 95 to 100, much like in the B's.
03:16You don't on any other letter grade.
03:18You get 85 to 88, and then 88 to 90, or 88 to 89 is a B-plus.
03:22Right, so why wouldn't 98 to 100 be an A-plus?
03:25Because the A-plus is implied that it's more than 100%.
03:29And when you do GPA, you get a 4 point for an A.
03:33You don't get 4.3 for an A-plus.
03:35Anyway, I have him with an A-minus because of two drops from Ayyuk.
03:38Fair enough.
03:39I don't know why you can look beyond that, but go ahead.
03:41I thought you were a tough grader.
03:42A-minus versus A, whatever.
03:44Offensive line, up next.
03:46I gave them an A-minus for their performance last night.
03:49Okay, why an A-minus?
03:50A certain guy on the right side of the offensive line with a handful of penalties.
03:53His name rhymes with Holton Mivitz.
03:57Yeah, something like that.
03:58Yeah, something like that, sorta.
04:00So, okay.
04:02A-minus is a good, sturdy number.
04:04I like an A-minus grade for the O-line.
04:06I would've downgraded the wide receivers and skill positions because there were a couple drops.
04:10And I'd upgrade the offensive line.
04:12Look, you're never gonna have a game where there aren't penalties on the offensive line.
04:16Or like, I mean, that might happen once a season.
04:20Somebody's gonna false start, somebody's gonna hold.
04:22As you've said many times, you can call it on any play.
04:25If the quarterback doesn't get his uniform dirty,
04:29and your running back who's never started before goes for a buck forty-seven,
04:35like if there's any group I was most impressed with last night, it's the offensive line.
04:40I think you graded them too hard.
04:42I will say, second half, they were better than an A-minus.
04:46It was a little ugly early, especially the first couple of drives.
04:49I mean, you wanna know what stat I want?
04:51I don't even know if you can find this, Grandy.
04:53How many NFL teams, thirty-two of them,
04:56how many of them started this week with a three and out?
05:01I feel like it was twenty-five of thirty-two teams.
05:06It's unbelievable how hard it was for teams to come out
05:11and move the ball in their very first drive.
05:14Yeah, both these teams, three and out.
05:16Sunday night football, same thing.
05:18Lions and Rams, boom boom, three and out, three and out.
05:20Everybody's punting right away.
05:22Niners punt, and then Wisniewski hit the showers.
05:24We're not gonna see you for the rest of the night.
05:26So that's not an excuse, it's just, I'm with you.
05:30Yeah, a lot of teams looked better in the second half on offense
05:33than they did in the first.
05:35Yeah, it's been an ugly offensive week, for sure.
05:37Up next is the front seven on defense.
05:39This is the down linemen in the linebacking group.
05:41I gave that group, in total, a B-plus.
05:43I had a hard time with this one.
05:45I had a B-plus for the front seven.
05:47Where's the drawback?
05:49Just the fact that you only got one sack?
05:51Personal foul penalty, you only had one sack,
05:53and then Leonard Floyd offside and costing the touchdown.
05:57Okay, and you gave him a B-plus?
05:59B-plus.
06:01I think that's fair.
06:03I like the grade, I like the teacher.
06:05Yeah, like a quarter and a half into the game,
06:07I'm kind of doing the, where's the pass rush?
06:09Like, I'm doing that.
06:11Like, a little stress early in the game,
06:13you're down 7-3, then you go make it 7-6.
06:15They're moving the ball a little bit,
06:17and it felt uncomfortable, and then they got it.
06:19They figured it out, and then you're right,
06:21it was really good from there.
06:23Grandy, I think you nailed that one.
06:26Way to go, Grandy.
06:28Hey, thanks for chiming in, Lucas.
06:30Director of sports, that was good.
06:32Yeah, okay, B-plus.
06:34All right, up next is the secondary,
06:36so the quarterbacks and safeties.
06:38I gave the secondary an A-minus for their performance last night.
06:40What's your thought there?
06:42I think it was an A until the last garbage time drive,
06:44which wasn't great.
06:46I was also a little thrown off
06:48by the way that they responded
06:50to Leonard Floyd's offside penalty.
06:52It kind of felt like the whole defense gave up,
06:54run down the middle unguarded.
06:56A-minus still, though, pretty good.
06:58The way that they limited Garrett Wilson
07:00to almost nothing aside from that first touchdown drive
07:02for the Jets was awesome.
07:04Good adjustments, I think, defensively
07:06for the secondary.
07:08I can see the A, but you rationalized
07:10the A-minus really well.
07:12The offside free play was an unfortunate one,
07:14and other than that, you had the one drive,
07:16and missed me with the garbage time
07:18because I get the ball back with 4.20 to go,
07:20and they're down by 19,
07:22and the majority of people had already headed
07:24for the exit, so I won't hold that necessarily
07:26against them, but they did a good job
07:28mixing up their coverages after that first quarter.
07:30I'll say this,
07:32you referenced that last,
07:34the Teron Taylor drive.
07:36I sort of throw that out,
07:38and to be honest with you,
07:40my feet were up so much, I didn't even really
07:42take note of who was in there.
07:44It was the number one defense.
07:46I know Bosa was still in there.
07:48Fred Warner was still in there.
07:51Yeah, I'm like, why are you all in there?
07:53I was the same way.
07:55But at the same time, I also know that defense,
07:57sometimes it's difficult
07:59on defense
08:01when you don't have
08:03that full-level motivation.
08:05Like the game was
08:07not in the balance anymore.
08:09The game was decided,
08:11and so I think it's easy to get back
08:13on your heels a little bit,
08:15but I got no problem with the grade.
08:17That all makes sense to me.
08:19The other thing
08:21that I did notice,
08:23I wanted to keep
08:25an eye on
08:27Yadim, because
08:29that was the question mark
08:31with who was going to be there.
08:33Correct me if I'm wrong, he was the one that got beat
08:35on the Teron Taylor touchdown.
08:37Right? I think that
08:39was Yadim.
08:41Eyes on that one.
08:43Eyes on Yadim and Renardo Green
08:45and how that position
08:47is going to develop
08:49as the year kind of unfolds.
08:51I didn't think it was a phenomenal game.
08:53It was an okay game
08:55for Yadim, so
08:57we'll see. But yeah, I like your grade.
08:59I like your grade. What else you got?
09:01I'll confirm who was defending that touchdown in the SEC,
09:03but up next we got special teams. Dibs will hate me
09:05for this one. I had to give out an A-plus
09:07to the special teams group last night.
09:09Six for six field goals? Didn't give up a big
09:11return on the other side? Nothing to be upset about.
09:13Dude, Jake Moody's going to win Special Teams Player of the Week.
09:16Well, he should. I'm pretty sure.
09:18He's on pace to kick 102 field goals this year,
09:20which I looked it up, would be a record.
09:22Well, by the way...
09:24You're the one who holds the record right now, right?
09:26For field goals in a season? Field goals in a season.
09:28And the number's not as big as you think now.
09:30Is it Gary Anderson? David Akers.
09:32With 44 as a niner.
09:34Oh! Akers like a niner.
09:36Yeah, I believe 44 is the number,
09:38so Moody off to a great start.
09:40Yeah, a real good start. Although, by the way,
09:42did they do special teams in both conferences,
09:44or is it only one?
09:46It's both, yeah.
09:48Because what's his name with the Steelers?
09:50Their kicker's going to win.
09:52He kicked six of them as well,
09:54and it was the only points they got,
09:56and they won the football game.
09:58Yeah, that'll be the AFC rep.
10:00So those two guys are going to win now.
10:02I'm not going to begrudge you for the A-plus all year.
10:04I mean, Wyschnowski won for one on spectacular punts.
10:06I do think they controlled the kickoff really well.
10:08There was the one where Moody did the bump and run
10:10that I love. It hit in the field
10:12at the end zone, so they only got it at the 20.
10:14The Jets got one of those on the Niners, too.
10:16Yep, so I did like the way they kind of mixed it up
10:18with the kickoff, and Moody, eight for eight
10:20on kicks, 20 points.
10:22By the way, real quick, because people won't know
10:24that rule. Like that kickoff rule,
10:26if it lands in between the goal line
10:28and the 20 and then scoots through,
10:30it's only the 20-yard line. If you just boot it
10:32all the way through, you go out to the 30.
10:34Everyone's still learning that.
10:36Yes, and so strategically, if you can kick one
10:38that bounces at about the 7 and then careens
10:40through and through the end zone,
10:42you're in a great spot, but it's risky
10:44because if you hook that thing out of bounds,
10:46they get it at the 40.
10:48All right, got to go quick here before we hit a quick break.
10:50Last one is coaching. This is not just Kyle Shanahan,
10:52but the whole coaching staff. I gave them an A.
10:54For me, this was a lot about Nick Sorensen
10:56and defensive adjustments after that first
10:58touchdown drive for the Jets. Garrett Wilson
11:00did not do anything nearly the rest of the game.
11:02I like the way they adjusted
11:04to the Jets beating them early.
11:06But this is the one that you sort of regretted.
11:08Like later this morning.
11:10I cannot agree with Kyle Shanahan's
11:12lack of aggressiveness in certain situations.
11:14End of the first half really bugged me and then
11:16kicking the field goal fourth and one from the five.
11:18You didn't like fourth and one?
11:20See, I did.
11:22Kick a field goal. It's still a two-touchdown game.
11:24No, it's a two-touchdown with two two-point conversion game.
11:26That's a two-score game.
11:28It's a two-score game, but it's a much, much harder
11:30two-score game that I don't think is really realistic.
11:32You know what's better than a two-score game?
11:34A three-score game.
11:36You know what's worse than a 16-point lead is a 13-point lead.
11:38That's true.
11:40Which you're risking.
11:42They can get a yard.
11:44Or maybe they wouldn't.
11:46But I hear you. I liked it.
11:48I have a hard time being critical when a team scores
11:50eight consecutive possessions.
11:52I mean, touchdowns greater than field goals.
11:54I get that.
11:56I do like the A-grade for coaching because
11:58and I don't like to give out A-pluses,
12:00but his offensive game plan was an A-plus-plus.
12:02I think it was a masterclass.
12:04Anyway, how can you not give Kyle Shanahan an A
12:06with a game plan that does not
12:08include Christian McCaffrey
12:10and then you still go out
12:12and score 30-plus points on opening night?
12:14That's good coaching.
12:16That's a good plan. That's a good contingency.
