00:00This offends me and it came from Bonte and Joe in the morning roast this morning
00:06and their guest a certain Brian Baldinger. He's great. He's phenomenal.
00:13I want every- stop what you're doing and listen to this. Because he's about to ruin. This has
00:19not been played up enough since it was said this morning. Tell Bob in the next cubicle to shut up.
00:28Shut up, Bob.
00:30If you're driving around, turn your phone over. You're supposed to be
00:35paying attention to the road anyway. If you're on a smart speaker,
00:41turn the stove off and listen to this.
00:45Alexa, turn it up.
00:47Oh boy, you just messed with everybody.
00:49I know, right?
00:51Dude, my Alexa goes rogue constantly.
00:53Why don't we just start every segment with, hey, Siri?
00:56Oh, crap. Hang on a second.
00:57Yeah.
00:58Hang on. Let me turn my phone off. Hang on. All right.
01:02Listen to this. What's the 49ers identity?
01:07Slow. They just look slow, Joe. They look like a slow team. I don't see speed. I just don't see,
01:16like, just the whole operation, the pass rush, the receiver. They just look like a slow team to me.
01:24Now, look, when you're two and three, nothing feels good and you start using superlatives like
01:30I'm doing. But if I'm finishing a sentence, that's what it looks like to me. And that's
01:35your team, though. Like, that's what it looks like to me.
01:39Oh, my God.
01:41Slow.
01:42This is.
01:43It's like Caltrans. Slow for the cone zone.
01:46I'm trying to think of a comp. OK, this is like somebody calling your kid stupid.
01:54This is no different than calling your baseball team boring.
01:58I was just going to say that's exactly what this is.
02:00This is worse than calling your basketball team old.
02:04Brian Baldinger, one of our absolute favorite tape divers in the NFL, just said the 49ers are slow.
02:18Yeah.
02:19In fact, he said it's their identity.
02:22Yeah, exactly. Exactly.
02:25Well. Oh, my goodness.
02:28Well, who looks fast right now?
02:30Brock Purdy on a scramble.
02:33He looks pretty fast.
02:34J.P. Mason looks I don't know if he looks fast, but he looks forceful.
02:38He looks forceful.
02:39Talano Funga, who's now on our with a hand injury.
02:45He looked fast and he was fast at the wrong time on the Kyler Murray
02:49quarterback keeper where he fired his gun and he came up and he should have stayed back
02:54because Murray went for 50 yards in the touchdown.
02:57But other than that, who looks fast right now?
03:00Brennan, you look fast.
03:02He did good, by the way.
03:03He looked ready and I got some eye rolls or at least some, you know, crinkled foreheads
03:07when I said after this game last week and Debo had like no targets and no touches.
03:13And people are like, why not?
03:15Right.
03:15Why not?
03:15Debo behind the line and Debo Debo.
03:17And I'm like, when I watched Debo, he looks sluggish.
03:22He I don't know if something's going on.
03:26He looks sluggish to me.
03:28He did not look like Debo Samuel, even in the few touches that he did get.
03:33So, look, I don't know if the 49ers are old.
03:37I don't know if they're injured.
03:40I don't know if they've got people out of position personnel wise.
03:44It's probably a combination of all of those things.
03:48And could it be fixed by some sort of an eventual wonderful return of Christian McCaffrey?
03:55And who knows about Drake Greenlaw?
03:57And maybe Mooney Ward is struggling with an injury that'll get better.
04:01I don't know how this is going to go for the second half of the season.
04:05I just know this.
04:07If you're a professional sports team, forget baseball for a second.
04:12If you're a professional sports team and someone calls you that.
04:16You dust.
04:17Yeah.
04:18You're done.
04:19You're irrelevant.
04:20You're pointless.
04:22I don't even know why we would watch your games.
04:25There is no rebounding from slow.
04:28Yeah.
04:28What sport is slow good other than golf?
04:31And even bowling?
04:32Well, and if you're slow in golf, you're Patrick Cantlay and everyone hates you.
04:36Yeah.
04:36People are annoyed with you, but you can still succeed.
04:39Right.
04:40Even if you're slow and you're playing slow and that's Patrick Cantlay and all the fellow
04:46pros hate him because he plays so slow and you get on the clock and the rest of it.
04:50But baseball slow is never good.
04:53And unless you're hitting a home run and you want to take your time going around the bases
04:57and you want to pimp it and bad flip it.
04:59Fine.
05:00Slow works then.
05:01But football?
05:02No.
05:03Soccer?
05:03No.
05:04Basketball?
05:04No.
05:05No.
05:05No sport.
05:06And that's not recoverable either.
05:10That's not.
05:11You can't scheme up slow.
05:14You can't fix slow.
05:15There's nothing you can do about slow.
05:17If they're slow, they're bleeped.
05:20Well, unless you want to like play more of your fast guys and you do have some fast players
05:24who you can play.
05:25Who's fast?
05:26That's like being benched.
05:28Who are we talking about?
05:29Ronnie Bell's fast.
05:30Okay.
05:32I don't think.
05:32Isaac Garendo is fast.
05:35Is he faster than Jordan Mason?
05:36He's certainly not faster than Christian McCaffrey.
05:39Well, McCaffrey is unavailable.
05:40Right now.
05:41Yes.
05:41Yeah.
05:42And I don't know if he's in Germany again or if he's just here.
05:44I don't think so.
05:45He's not playing.
05:46No, not yet.
05:47So like in terms of who you actually can play or want to play, you're right.
05:52You don't have a lot of guys who you can just say, well, we're going to take you out and
05:55we're going to put in a fast guy in your spot.
05:58You don't have that.
05:58And the one guy who you really need more than anyone is not Christian McCaffrey.
06:04It's Dre Greenlaw.
06:05And Dre Greenlaw is not only fast, but he is forceful and he's intimidating.
06:10The hardest hit that you made on Sunday was Dre Greenlaw pushing a guy,
06:15Seriously.
06:15Traming Bride into the water cooler.
06:17Which, by the way, is he going to get fined for that?
06:19Yes.
06:19Yeah.
06:19The team will actually.
06:20Yeah.
06:21Like that's only a hundred grand.
06:22I mean, well, it's big Dom, except for he's a player.
06:26The only difference.
06:27But I know he's not a player.
06:28Well, but he is.
06:29He's on the team.
06:30Yes.
06:30But he does not have Dom is just a couple of injuries away from being in there himself.
06:35If you ask him.
06:35So like, I get there's a little differentiation there, but at the same time, no, you're not
06:40an active player and I'm pretty sure that you're not supposed to get involved in that
06:43stuff, right?
06:44That's normally a hundred grand from what I've read in terms of the punishment, but
06:48who cares?
06:49Whatever.
06:49Jed York can write that check, but he is the one you need more than anyone else, because
06:55when he's on the field and you're on the other team, you have to have an eye toward this
07:00guy may hurt me and he may want to hurt me.
07:03He may try to hit me and hurt me.
07:06And I'm not saying that he's a dirty player, but he's right on that line.
07:10He's in that gray area.
07:12He is.
07:12Of course he is.
07:14Dirty is a pretty foul word.
07:16No, it is dream on green and dirty player.
07:18Most would say yes, but that's, but I don't think he's on your team.
07:23You're like, yeah, day, day.
07:24Yeah.
07:24You like him.
07:25But I think Dre Greenlaw is not a dream on green level response.
07:29I think that Dre is somebody who rides that line and lives there.
07:33He lives there on that line.
07:35In other words, he's in a sport where like the dream on green dirty plays are normally
07:41outside the boundary of basketball.
07:43That's what I mean.
07:44But in football, there is no outside the boundary.
07:46Well, sure there is their boundaries.
07:48And like Dre Greenlaw, like if I hit you right at the boundary, was it out of bounds?
07:51Was it a little bit too aggressive for that moment?
07:53But it's at least a football play, right?
07:55So that's what I mean.
07:56Like in basketball, you don't have that same latitude is what I'm saying.
08:00Dirty feels like purposeful, like I'm purposely either trying to hurt you or take liberties
08:05or whatever.
08:06And Dre, I would stop short of saying that.
08:08But boy, he pushes the envelope.
08:10Of course, he pushes it.
08:12And it's football.
08:12And, you know, we had Bill Romanowski for a long time on the rise guys on the morning
08:17show.
08:17And he would talk about, you know, sometimes you need to take a 15.
08:20OK, and guess what?
08:22And he was a dirty player.
08:24Yes.
08:24But he also would, between the lines, look to make those types of plays that are, you
08:30know, if it's 15 yards, but I take out your quarterback, is it worth it?
08:34He's a crazy person.
08:35Yes.
08:36And Dre might be too.
08:37A little bit.
08:38Right.
08:38You got to have a little bit of crazy in there sometimes to be a linebacker.
08:41And you go against a Niner defense that doesn't have that.
08:45And Fred Warner is a great player.
08:46He's Hall of Fame caliber.
08:48But he doesn't give you that same sort of feel.
08:51And without that, I mean, Nick Bosa, he's not that guy.
08:55You know, I'm just going to try to sack you and I'm going to try to tackle you and do
08:58my shrug move.
08:59And that'll be all for that.
09:01And we'll be on to the next snap.
09:03The Niners don't have that edge right now.
09:08So Baldi's right about slow, but also they don't have that edge.
09:12Well, and that is why so many of you woke up today and want Robert Sala back.
09:17That's my opinion is you're seeing what Baldi's seeing.
09:21And instead of being like, well, maybe they're just too old to run fast anymore.
09:28Instead, you're like they lost their edge.
09:30They've lost their fire.
09:32I don't know yet five games into the season what the what's the correct response is.
09:36I just know that that's that's the itch that Robert is scratching for you and for me.
09:42Like he represents that up and down the sideline and freaking out and pumping fists and running
09:49stairs and losing our minds.
09:51And there's been none of that.
09:52There's been absolutely none of that except for when Robert was actually here running
09:56the stairs at Levi's Stadium and the Niners blew them out.
09:59So who cares?
10:00But like, if you're slow, here's what and then we're going to go to the phones.
10:05But this this is what would terrify me if the Niners are truly slow.
10:09I want you to list off the quarterbacks that the 49ers have faced so far in five weeks.
10:17You've got a 40 year old in his first game off of an Achilles,
10:21followed by last year's backup quarterback, followed by Matt Stafford, who's also old
10:28with no receivers or offensive lineman.
10:30Thirty six.
10:30He beat you, followed by Jacoby Brissett, who was benched today.
10:34I told you yesterday would be good call, followed by Kyler Murray,
10:40who we literally spent time last week asking the age old question.
10:45Is he good now?
10:49Now you're slow and desperate.
10:51And what are you getting?
10:52You're going to get Gino Smith, Patrick Mahomes and Dak Prescott, right?
10:56In the next three weeks.
10:58And Gino's got more weapons than Calamari or any team you faced, really.
11:03He leads the league in passing, does he not?
11:05Right.
11:05But they have three legit receivers and Mooney Ward now might be headed for IR.
11:12And so you've got a young secondary.
11:14You have a non-existent pass rush going up against the Seattle team
11:17that has three legit wide receivers.
11:20By the way, you just said something there that I bet made people go, wait, what?
11:24Mooney Ward is going to IR?
11:26Well, check this out, because it's odd to go to IR when you've literally missed no games.
11:31Yeah, it's played in all the games.
11:32He said last week, I feel like I'm playing the worst football in my career.
11:35I raised my hand and went, yep, see the same thing.
11:38Can't figure out why you're not playing well, but you're not.
11:41And check this out.
11:43Kyle Shanahan today at his press availability is asked about Mooney, not Mooney, Mooney,
11:52the kicker.
11:53But listen to where the conversation goes as he loops both of them into his answer.
11:58You have a timeline on Mooney, is IR a possibility?
12:02That's a high ankle sprain.
12:03So usually with those, I usually say about a month.
12:05Sometimes they can surprise you and go quicker.
12:07Sometimes they can go longer.
12:08So we're not exactly sure yet.
12:10So IR is?
12:11IR is an option, yeah.
12:12Just with how quick this has happened, having Huff in that situation where we got to decide
12:17Mooney could be a possible decision.
12:18We have a number of guys already on it.
12:20So we're just trying to weigh in all that stuff.
12:21Okay.
12:22So I actually come out of that with questions.
12:24Did he misspeak or does he mean Mooney Ward or did he mean Moody?
12:28It sounded to me guys like he was saying we are yet to make a decision on Jake Moody,
12:34the kicker, because we only have, I think it's eight IR returnee spots for a season.
12:39They've already used a bunch of them up.
12:40So we're going to wait to make the decision on Moody until we make a decision on some
12:44others who Fonga is one.
12:46And then also potentially Mooney Ward, another, which makes no sense because he said earlier
12:51in the presser, if there was a practice today, there's not, they play on Thursday.
12:56If there was a practice today, Mooney would be limited, but he would still be practicing.
13:02So I'm not sure what he's talking about.
13:04I wonder if he just misspoke.
13:06That's one letter away.
13:08I mean, we've done it with Moody and Looney, but this is Moody and Mooney.
13:13Right.
13:14Much bigger.
13:14Yeah.
13:16Anyway, yeah, they signed another kicker today.
13:17Who'd they get?
13:18Matthew Wright.
13:18Is that right?
13:19Yeah.
13:19Matthew Wright.
13:20Okay.
13:21Now the 49ers kicker.
13:23All right.
13:23Adjust your fantasy lineups accordingly, please.
13:26Charveris Ward has played in 97% of the snaps this year.
13:3097.2.
13:31I got a hard time believing he'd be stuck on IR when he missed no snaps and was going
13:36to practice today.
13:38That's just weird.
13:39Limited today.
13:41And he's got a bruised knee.
13:43Yeah.
13:43And he dealt with, remember, he dealt with a hammy the same week Kittle did.
13:46Yeah.
13:46But then Kittle was out and, but Ward was in against the Rams.
13:51Right.
13:51He played.
13:52He played.
13:53And he's played all but about, you know, 20 snaps all year.
13:57So I'd be surprised if he went on IR, but at the same time, even if he's not on IR,
14:03he's not been his best self all year.
14:05Not at all.
14:06Not at all.
14:06And that's been part of it in what Baldy was saying about a team that looks slow.
14:11And, you know, there's another four letter word you can use that is a synonym for slow
14:15in football.
14:18Exactly right.
14:19Slow, slow could also just mean not right.
14:22Yeah.
14:22Not Matthew, right?
14:24Just not right with an R, not a W.
14:26Well, I was using another S word and I'll let the caller say it because I don't know
14:31if that's what the caller is going to say, but I have a feeling that's what line two
14:34is going to say.
14:34Well, let's start on line one.
14:36Let's go to Chris and say, hey, Chris, thanks for calling.
14:38What's up?
14:41Hey, what's going on, gentlemen?
14:42Good afternoon.
14:44Hey, hey, what's going on, guys?
14:46Hey, Mark, what made me call is you were talking about intensity, right?
14:50Yeah.
14:50Fire.
14:51Is that what you were talking about?
14:52Yeah.
14:52So, Robert Sala, you know, he was a raw, raw guy.
14:56You mentioned headbutt players without a helmet on.
14:59You know, that's all good and well, but to me or to, you know, I think any, you know,
15:05I'm not speaking for myself.
15:06I would just imagine any quality athlete who played past high school would be able to tell
15:11you that you're simply not able to play with fire and intensity unless you meet the prerequisite
15:19for that, which is being in the absolute best shape as possible.
15:22You can't, you know, whether it's basketball, football, all of these contact sports, you
15:28cannot, you just, to me, you simply cannot play with fire and intensity unless you meet
15:33the prerequisite, which is being in the absolute best shape.
15:36Okay, so that's interesting.
15:38But Chris, can you then, there's a follow-up question there.
15:41Are you suggesting that the 49ers are not in tip-top shape?
15:46What do you see there?
15:46And if you do see that, what's the reason?
15:49Why would the Niners suddenly this year not be in shape?
15:52We've never discussed this before.
15:54No, I totally agree.
15:56And, you know, to take it a point further, before I get into that, I would say that the
16:01best of the best players, the true dogs in the NFL, they don't need a raw, raw guy.
16:05Yeah, every team has a leader, but you're either a fiery and intense player or you're
16:10not.
16:11To answer your question on why they maybe look a little slow, look a little old, I do
16:16think there is some truth to that.
16:18You know, Purdy's young.
16:19Mason's got fresh legs.
16:21Aiyuk's young.
16:22But Debo, I mean, when was the last time he's been healthy through a season, his rookie
16:26year?
16:26How about Trent Williams?
16:27What's he, 38 now?
16:29You know, Tarverius Ward's been frequently banged up.
16:32You know, they just kind of look old.
16:34I watched Trent Williams.
16:36Everybody, you know, top 10 player in the NFL is voted by his peers.
16:39I watched the second year defensive end.
16:41I think his name's Pierre St. Johnson or something.
16:44He was an end.
16:45He put Trent Williams on his ass multiple times throughout the game.
16:48I mean, Trent, I remember a third downplay.
16:51Oh, let's go to our tried and true play.
16:53We're running to the left behind Trent.
16:54He had one guy to block and he ended up on his butt in the whole collapse and we didn't
16:59pick up a third and two.
17:00And that's running to decide that's supposed to be our strength.
17:04I called last week.
17:04I said Tarverius Ward to me has always been overrated.
17:08He's, you know, he's a physical guy.
17:10He gets away with a lot of PIs, but he constantly gets routed by smaller, quicker receivers.
17:15So, you know, I think it's a personnel issue.
17:18I also, you know, they are a little older, a little slower.
17:20Maybe to answer your question, it's because it's another Super Bowl layover, another failed
17:26year.
17:26And that's probably in all honesty, that's probably the most hole that our team is going
17:32to be.
17:33I mean, these guys, some of these guys are going to leave next year, you know, it's not
17:38looking great for the rest of the season, but hopefully, you know, like, like everybody
17:42says, Kyle's a genius, right?
17:44So you're able to put up more than zero points in the second half.
17:47No doubt, Chris.
17:49I'm so done with the genius word, because if I hear one more person call in and say
17:52this supposed genius, and I keep asking who the hell called him a genius.
17:56We all have.
17:56No, we haven't.
17:57We know we all have.
17:58He's a no, but we haven't.
18:00He's a very good coach.
18:01We, the fan base, have called him that.
18:03Well, but then you can't get mad at it when you're like, who called him a genius?
18:06If the answer is you.
18:07Like, no, we're not mad at the label.
18:09We're mad at the performance.
18:10I think people are mad at the label.
18:12You can't go out against a terrible Arizona defense and score zero points.
18:16No one's arguing that.
18:17I just, this label that people are like, he's not a genius.
18:21Fine.
18:22He's not a genius.
18:23Who called him that?
18:23He's the coach.
18:24He's the coach.
18:25It doesn't matter what the label is.
18:27It matters what the results are.
18:28It's bothering people.
18:30I hear it every day.
18:31Every time they lose.
18:34This guy is supposed to be a genius.
18:36He's supposed to be.
18:36Who said that?
18:38It doesn't matter what word you put on it.
18:39He's supposed to be an offensive play calling wizard and your offense had zero points against
18:46a bad defense.
18:46But nobody has ever translated good coach to mean that every play works.
18:50I'm not arguing with you whether or not the performance has been good enough so far this
18:54year.
18:54Of course it hasn't.
18:56Of course it hasn't.
18:57But if you're for some reason, so many people, I'm not talking about you are putting this
19:02bar out there where it's like, I need you to respond to this genius label.
19:07Nobody did that.
19:09If you heard that from like a manual or something, don't hang that around Kyle's neck.
19:16If he, if it was the license plate on his car, now we've got something we can talk about,
19:21but I've never heard Kyle Shanahan go to the microphone and be like, welcome to the genius
19:27bar.
19:28Let's talk.
19:29Nobody's done that.
19:30So it doesn't matter what label you put on it.
19:32Well, clearly it does to people because they're calling up about it.
19:36They're call up about, and they use the word because it's a convenient way to describe
19:40their frustration.
19:41I don't think that anybody's looking at it and saying, well, he said he's a genius and
19:45therefore this and that it is the bar that's been set.
19:48The bar has been set to where you have this offense that is run totally different and
19:53every other team, not every team, but many teams try to do what you do and they emulate
19:58you and your offense is great and you have a draft pick who is Mr.
20:02Irrelevant and you have an undrafted running back and you've got a tight end that nobody
20:07else wanted for multiple rounds and you have a seventh round wide receiver and you're doing
20:11all these great things.
20:13So we're used to seeing that and now we're not seeing it.
20:15Yeah.
20:15So whatever word you want to use to describe it, what we're seeing is not what we're used
20:20to.
20:20Of course, because apparently they look slow.
20:23Yeah.
20:23Now, I mean, when you, when you think about what was just said, okay, what Chris was just
20:28talking about and I want to make sure that everyone realizes, I'm going to say this right
20:33up front.
20:34This is not an excuse because every NFL team is dealing with this, but let's just talk
20:40about the way it looks.
20:41Can you figure out why they would look slow?
20:44There are new players in there in positions like a Devondre Campbell that we have not
20:49seen play before and so far we're not really digging it.
20:52So that could be slow or as he puts it, maybe some of these players did get old overnight.
20:59Maybe, maybe the best of Debo is behind us.
21:02I hope not.
21:03And truly maybe Trent Williams is 36 and, and, and looks like it this year.
21:11So, or maybe players like Charverius Ward are playing through injury.
21:17I do still think there's a scenario where a completely different set of health circumstances
21:24make this team look totally different, but I don't know.
21:27I don't know about the nagging injuries and I can't be sure that the players we want to
21:31come back are going to come back.
21:33I don't know if Dre and Christian are coming back and even if we do, I don't know when.
21:38So that's a big word.
21:41That is a big stinking word.
