00:00Wow, doesn't it feel different?
00:03It feels different to me.
00:05That's a whole lot of drama, that's a whole lot of worrying, and I would say about half
00:11of one quarter in, you could still worry.
00:14You'd be like, oh, they went three and out, and then they got a field goal where they
00:18went three and out, and then Aaron Rodgers marched them down the field, and Brees Hall
00:23threw a football off the back wall, and the Jets are thinking upset, and they lead seven
00:28to three, 65,000 have been led to sit on their hands, and from that moment forward,
00:35oh my goodness, complete and total dominance all across the board.
00:41I don't think there's one aspect of 49er football, nothing was perfect, but you're not going
00:46to take shots at any aspect of the game.
00:49Offense, defense, special teams, coaching, any position group, nobody was terrible, nobody
00:55left a bunch on the table out there, complete and total dominance of a team that is one
01:01of the top ten favorites in the NFL, and an entire off-season of stress has been put to
01:08rest.
01:09For the most part, yeah.
01:10You got a wide receiver who didn't go to camp and had two drops, which is not good, but
01:14you won by 13, so it's not even a headline, and the only thing I thought of when you were
01:19laying that out about, you know, no body or no aspect was disappointing, that was about
01:24the only disappointing thing, and it didn't matter, because your offense was humming,
01:28you scored on eight possessions in a row, and it was night-night, and people want to
01:32talk about, oh, those field goals, they need to be touchdowns, and that has to be touchdowns.
01:36Okay, so you want to score 56 points in an NFL game, which is extremely rare, and yeah,
01:42two touchdowns and six field goals, you'd rather have it be the other way around, which
01:46would be 48 points, I get that, but you scored.
01:50You got the ball, and you scored, and when you do that, it doesn't matter if it's a ton
01:53of threes, you're going to win a lot of games.
01:55You're going to win a ton of games.
01:56Nine straight drives with points is phenomenal, and yes, you know, those who want to say you
02:02got to be better in the red zone, it's interesting.
02:04I mean, Jake Moody was so great, because they didn't get to the red zone a whole lot.
02:08I thought they were fine once they got into the red zone, it was kind of the high red
02:11where things were stalling out sometimes, and sure, a ball was dropped in the end zone,
02:16and we will talk about that, because Peyton Manning on ManningCast left nothing on the
02:21table there, and I have an observation about what it sounded like in the stands when that
02:27happened, because Brandon Aiyuk, I do think there's something he's going to have to be
02:30ready for, he probably is, but the tone around Brandon Aiyuk is a little different now.
02:36When stuff like that happens, I'm sure it'll dissipate, and he'll get back to himself,
02:40and everything will be fine, but sure, you can nitpick everywhere, but all in all, to
02:46me, last night served as a humongous, humongous just pill of medication to calm everyone and
02:59everything down, they still very much look like an elite football team, and the stress
03:06got ramped up, as you know, as we know, right before kick, with Christian out, and for them
03:12to end up looking like that without Christian, I think served another helping of anxiety
03:18reducers.
03:19I get it, and I think the anxiety was among the fan base, I think the team kind of was
03:23self-confident knowing that they're a really good team, but now that they've gone out and
03:26showed it, they showed it on Monday night, and you score eight times in a game, and it
03:31was really never in doubt after the Jets scored the touchdown to take the lead, okay, nice
03:36drive, nice touchdown, it didn't mean anything as far as the flow and the rhythm of the game,
03:40but the Niners go right back, and they score, and then they turn the faucet off on the Jets,
03:44and you saw why this team is gonna be really good, if healthy, complimentary football,
03:50the offense didn't need touchdowns, field goals, and ball possession, that's fine, and
03:54then the defense would get on the ball back, and they'd score three, or they'd get seven
03:57this time, and they did the classic Shanahan double up, where you score at the end of the
04:02half, and you get the ball to start the third, and you score again, and at that point, it
04:06was night-night, Shanahan and the team was in complete control of that game from about
04:11the 10-minute mark all the way through.
04:13So we would love to hear from you today, and we made this kind of a tradition over the
04:18last couple of years after 49er games, and play a little game of what we learned, 888-957-9570,
04:25your reaction to the football game, you can take that wherever you wanna go, what did
04:29we learn, it can be good, it can be bad, it can be anywhere in between, we'd love to hear
04:34from you today, 888-957-9570, the day after games, we leave our guest list relatively
04:40clean because we just want that to be you, so give us a ring, what did you learn, what
04:46did you think, 888-957-9570, you keep saying, and this is absolutely accurate, that if they
04:52are blessed with health, and that is, of course, a standard for all NFL football teams, but
04:58I will say this, there's a chance that that football team that we watched last night,
05:07that football team, over the next handful of weeks, is going to acquire Christian McCaffrey,
05:16Dre Greenlaw, portions of Brandon Aiyuk, and the breadth of Trent Williams, that team is
05:25going to acquire Dee Winters, that football team stands, within reason, to get even better.
05:33Talanoa, Hufanga, as well.
05:34Talanoa, Hufanga, thank you very much, yeah, and the rookies, who will keep getting better,
05:42and the other big observation for me is, I've always thought this is the least sexy thing
05:47to do in the world, however, it's what makes football teams good, if you get a great amount
05:54of production from your offensive line, you will play great football, and they were fantastic
05:59last night, if they play like that, Manor's going to go a long way.
06:02Especially the way they had the run game going, they had the Jets on skates, and the beauty
06:06of watching Dominic Pooney is that you feel like you can run right now, when you need
06:11to get a big player, you need a big yard, it's been a lot of run left behind Trent throughout
06:15the majority of his time here, because he's a Hall of Famer, and it's pretty bankable
06:19to do that, but now, you've got the ability to run right, and they did it a lot behind
06:23Pooney last night, and you got that one drive where it was just run after run, left, right,
06:29toss, and the rest of it, I thought Shanahan was in his bag, once he realized that the
06:34offensive line had to jump on the Jets, he realized he could just run them into the ground,
06:39and he did.
06:40Yep, absolutely, and then I also thought, I know what happens, it's the fantasy football
06:46world in which we live, it's box score babies who don't really watch the game with a fine
06:51tooth comb, and I totally get it, but last night was an absolutely phenomenal night for
06:58the quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers, because he has been told his entire career,
07:05yeah, that's fine, plucky little Brock, you're very, very good because of everything around
07:11you and you have a good coach and a good system, and so you know how to run that very well,
07:17what would you ever do, and in fact, the future contract that everyone worries about is based
07:23on what would you do when you don't have your top weapons around you, and for him to play
07:29the way he did, turnover free, under control, moving the ball consistently, very high percentage
07:35again with his passes, to do all of that and be on point, and by the way, how much better
07:41would his night have looked if he had about 25 more yards and a touchdown throw, which
07:45all Brandon has to do is hold on to the ball, to do that without Christian McCaffrey on the
07:52field, that is a significant moneymaker night on Monday Night Football for Brock.
07:57Yeah, he was solid, he didn't have to do anything too spectacular, he made the throws he needed to
08:01and he didn't make mistakes, and that basically became the blueprint early on in that game,
08:05because the ground attack was going to be so prolific, he had a lot of third and short,
08:10second and short for Brock, they converted, he made a couple of the big throws he needed to make,
08:14but by and large, that was not a go win the game for us Brock kind of atmosphere,
08:19once you got on top, and then you get that first score in the third quarter,
08:23that's when you realize that the Jets were going to be up against it, and they hadn't moved the
08:27ball other than the one drive early in that first quarter, so you got up by two scores,
08:31and you were able to just to put it in the second gear, and so Brock didn't have to really do
08:36anything too spectacular, which is what you really want from your quarterback.
08:40But I look at the plays that are there, and what do you do with them, his accuracy largely was very
08:48good, I know he missed some throws here and there, he threw a huck one over Kyle Juszczak's head
08:52at one point, but I would say not only did he not turn the ball over, I only saw maybe one
08:58throw that even made me think, that was kind of dicey, it was the one that he threw to Saubert,
09:05down the right seam, and he put it high, which is what you want to do,
09:12you want to put it high, there were a lot of people actually that put it high last night,
09:15I've smelled it, but anyway, he put it high, that's what you want to do, give your receiver
09:21a chance at a finger tipper, thank you, it was, we know Levi's Stadium and how you do it,
09:26but anyway he threw it at a spot that it was probably going to be incomplete, and it was,
09:31but that was the only throw where like, one of my seatmates called it a Jimmy Ono throw,
09:36no it's not, and I know which one that would be, it wasn't quite, I agree, but it's not,
09:40it was into double coverage, and it was high, and it felt unnecessary, but it's also third down,
09:45and you're throwing all the way downfield into the other team's red zone, I get it, so you're like,
09:50if it gets picked, it's a punt, you know what I mean, and speaking of punting,
09:55do the Niners have a punter, I saw Wisnowski early, did he get hurt, because I didn't see
10:00him come back out onto the field the rest of the game. No, they scored on eight consecutive
10:04possessions, so when you do that, and that's actually what Kyle was saying after the game,
10:08he's like, yeah, I know, I didn't really see Mitch and stuff, and so I don't know how many
10:11points, you know, how many times in a row and stuff, but he left man, he went golfing,
10:15seriously, he punts a minute and 29 seconds into the game, just go home, go home, what if he's
10:21like, I'm out of here, you guys won't need me, Draymond actually got called down to the field
10:26and goes, we don't need you, we don't need you. Man, what a great night.
10:33Clinic.
10:34What a great night.
10:35Should put everyone at ease.
10:36It should, and you know, look, what was our whole thing about week one in the NFL,
10:41boy, everybody looks out of sync, and the Niners certainly had their moments right out of the gate,
10:47you know, three and out, and another three and out, even after they get the fumble and you're
10:51up three nothing, but this is how I would put it, I thought the 49ers got their stuff together
10:59largely quicker than just about any other NFL team that I saw over the weekend, I mean,
11:04the Saints looked like they had their act together, I don't know if they were just playing
11:07the Panthers, but there were very few teams that looked like they got their act together
11:12in the first half of their football game, the Niners were one of them.
11:16Yeah, and when they get that going with a backup running back, RB2, who,
11:20he may be RB1 again this week, we don't know if Christian McCaffrey is going to be able to answer
11:25the bell or not, but going into this week, if you don't have McCaffrey,
11:29you feel better than you did yesterday at about four o'clock.
11:32What a night for him.
11:33What a night.
11:34What a great night for him, and we will get to, you know, someone in another city,
11:40because the Niners played on Monday Night Football, had me on their radio show today,
11:45and he referred to, go ahead, Grandy, he referred, thank you, he referred to what
11:50happened with Mason last night as the controversy after the game, and I kind of was like,
11:58I'm bummed about that word, it's probably not wrong, I guess, JP clearly was agitated,
12:05and he looked right at a room full of media members and said,
12:09this is why I don't like talking to the media, and it's interesting to do that when it's literally
12:13your first time that the media is ever really focused on you.
12:17And so, I don't know, was it controversial?
12:20I just found it all in all disappointing.
12:22I understand the media stumbled into this stuff, and we'll explain to you
12:26what happened if you don't know, but they stumbled into this.
12:29I do think they have to ask the questions.
12:31I don't have any problem with the questions, but I also understand why Mason was annoyed
12:36and sort of gun shy on answering any of this stuff, and in the end, I just find it unfortunate.
12:42Last night should have been a night where Mason thought, this is the greatest night of my life,
12:47this is the greatest night of my professional life, and instead, he was mad after the game,
12:51so that's kind of a bummer.
12:52It's a bummer, and it's also, I think, the scourge, the dark underbelly of gambling in
12:59our sports because of gambling, we have to have official designations, and because we
13:04need official designations, and you tell somebody something on Friday, theoretically, and something
13:10happens on Sunday where you change the designation of a player at the last minute, there is a
13:14certain amount of competitive edge to it if they wanted to do that.
13:18I believe it was just a misunderstanding where they said to him on Friday, dude, we're going
13:22to need you, and maybe he will start.
13:26It doesn't mean that he's going to take 80% of the carries if he happens to start.
13:29I took it the same way, that they looked at him on Friday and said, your role is probably
13:33going to be much more significant on Monday night.
13:36Does that mean you're starting, getting 28 carries?
13:38Does it mean Christian's in a baseball cap?
13:40It doesn't mean any of those things, but when someone says, hey, when did you find
13:43out that this was going to be different?
13:44He's like, Friday.
13:45Exactly.
13:47I'm with you.
13:47To me, that doesn't compromise the legality, and the Niners should not be facing any punishment
13:53for anything that they did that was nefarious because there's nothing there.
