00:00I don't recall requesting the pleasure of your company, Pacey.
00:22Right?
00:23Right.
00:25You know, after Van Gogh chopped off his own ear, there was a rash of copycat mutilations
00:31amongst the students.
00:34Your point being?
00:36My point being that the whole world reveres the artists, envies their talent, wants to
00:41be just like them.
00:43So that's what I'm doing here.
00:44I'm hoping some of your genius will rub off on me.
00:47You got kicked out of your house again.
00:48No, not exactly kicked out.
00:50It's more like they're filming a Lifetime original movie in my living room right now.
00:54And which one of the Witter sisters is in complete distress right now?
01:00That would be Numero Uno.
01:02Left the sergeant major for conduct unbecoming, fled back to the home front, and of course
01:06brought along my screaming nieces.
01:09So I finally get my own room and you have been exiled to the city.
01:14Ouch.
01:15My sentiments exactly.
01:20So, uh, what do you think?
01:27Was it done?
01:30Yes, it's done.
01:32I thought that Principal Green had commissioned you guys to do murals exemplifying school
01:36spirit and unity.
01:38I did.
01:41Well, no offense, but this looks like something you'd find tattooed on Kwai Chang Cain's forehead.
01:51You don't like it?
01:53I didn't say I don't like it.
01:55I'm pretty sure the rest of the murals will probably be a little more traditional.
02:01What, like football players and lighthouses?
02:03And what do they actually say about the high school experience?
02:07So, this is the U.S. of A. We're a very prosaic nation, and when we have art in public places
02:13we want it to be about as subtle as Godzilla.
02:15Yeah, but Pacey, don't you think that art can have this power?
02:19I mean, it can bring people together.
02:21Yeah, absolutely.
02:23In museums, the thinker man's pickup joint.
02:29That's what I like about you, Pacey.
02:32You just go so deep.
02:35Thank you so much.
03:05You are my metal
03:07Balls and arrows
03:09Stars and sunsets
03:11Hey, hey, hey, yeah
03:13Hey, hey, hey, yeah
03:15Every heartbeat
03:17Every kiss
03:19Just makes me wonder
03:21What all this is
03:23Suits of armor
03:25Hearts and arrows
03:27Hey, hey, hey, yeah
03:36I am in love with this
03:54Can I give them preview?
03:55No.
03:56Why not? Pacey did.
03:58Boston, the unveiling is a crucial part to any new work.
04:02I want you to have the complete experience.
04:04experience. He didn't tell you what it is, did he? No. He said it was great. That means a lot coming from the
04:13world's most discriminating art critic. Well, he knows what he likes. Dawson, Pacey's
04:20prized possession is a black velvet painting of the baby Elvis. So how's your
04:27speech coming? I don't know why I have to even say anything. I mean, isn't an artist just supposed to let her work speak for itself?
04:36Yeah, but when PTA's and the school board let you paint something in the hallway of a public school, they expect a little
04:42point in the ceremony in return. So are you gonna be there? Of course. I mean, if you want me to. Yeah, I want you to. Okay. And whatever you think, be honest with me, you know,
04:56even if you hate it. What makes you think I'm gonna hate it? Nothing. It's just stepping out from behind a curtain. I can understand that. It can be terrifying. There in the lights, in front of all those people, being judged. What's even more than that? I mean, I feel like I'm declaring myself for the first time in what I really
05:26think about this place. With everyone staring at it, it's gonna be like they're all looking right into my soul. Give me a break. It was a joke. There's nothing funny about cheating, Matt. Principal Green, members of the
05:45disciplinary committee. I admit it. I didn't know the answer on the quiz. So I did what any self-respecting kid would do in a cellular age.
05:56You know, I whipped out my StarTAC, I dialed home, and I asked my mom, how many justices sit on the Supreme Court? You know, call me crazy. Even Mr. Higgins left. Okay, and you claim that your mother didn't know the answer either? Uh-huh. Okay, so how do you explain your perfect score on the quiz? I guessed.
06:27Okay, um, well, then I guess my recommendation would be that you get a failing grade on the work at question and a three-hour detention. Why don't you just bust my kneecaps while you're at it? That'll be enough, Mr. Caulfield. While your behavior clearly violates the letter of the honor code, I do not believe it is in violation of the spirit.
06:53Am I free to go, then? Yes, you're free to go. Mr. Caulfield, let's let this be the last time we see you before this committee.
07:05All right. Thank you.
07:21Andy, would you wait for me for a minute, please?
07:25Sure.
07:32Um, Principal Green, I'm really sorry about earlier. I overreacted to that letter.
07:37No, that's not what this is about. Andy, I have news.
07:41News?
07:43I was contacted this morning by the Educational Testing Service. Andy, your phenomenal PSAT results have placed you among the top 50,000 scorers in the country. You, young lady, have taken one giant step toward a National Merit Scholarship. Isn't that fantastic?
08:05Fantastic.
08:09Andy, what's wrong? You seem stunned.
08:14No, no, no, it's just, um...
08:19Well, it's just, yeah, I'm a little stunned.
08:28Congratulations.
08:46No, no, no! Look! Pacey, last time you were here, you left water rings on my Deco coffee table.
08:52Dougie, Mom and Dad just wanted me to bring you something, that's all.
08:55Yeah, what?
08:58Me.
09:01Look, what are you doing?
09:02I'm moving in, bro.
09:04Wait, excuse me?
09:06You heard me. I'm moving in.
09:07Oh, look, Dad gave me a check to give to you. It's like a security deposit in case I break your stereo.
09:13No, you're not breaking my stereo because you're not touching my stereo because you're not moving in with me. Not now, not ever. This is not Party of Five.
09:21Come on, Dougie, please, you can't make me go back to that house.
09:24I mean, think about it, you've got this whole style in Bachelorette, all to yourself, with the nice lighting and the fancy window dressings and all the other trappings of the modern, extremely closeted homosexual male, and I don't even have a room to myself anymore.
09:39Since when?
09:41Well, since Carrie decided to take an extended leave of absence from Jerry.
09:45You remember Jerry, don't you? Our favorite brother-in-law, the one with all the tattoos?
09:49And of course, she brought along the no-neck monsters who are currently residing in my room.
09:54So what do you say, man? Can I stay here, please?
10:01Okay, look, if I agree to this, and that is a very big if, there will be rules. I am your willing pupil.
10:10Rule number one, we don't eat anything that Mom sends over. The woman thinks that iceberg lettuce is haute cuisine.
10:17Agreed.
10:18Rule number two, the coaster. Live it, love it, use it at all times.
10:23Done.
10:24You will keep the CD collection in alphabetical order, by last name, not first. Do you understand?
10:31Oh, yeah, perfectly, but I don't foresee the need for me to dip into your diva collection any time too soon.
10:37Oh, I think you would be surprised at how a tortured and passionate female voice can soothe an achy, breaky heart.
10:44My heart is just fine, thank you very much.
10:46Oh, sure it is, little brother, sure it is.
10:49Look, Dougie, if you were referring to our brief jailhouse conversation the other night, you can just chalk it up to drunken rambling.
10:55Well, there won't be any of that on my watch, and I won't have any moping around like a lovesick puppy, either.
11:01By the way, are you any good at decoupage?
11:06Oh, God help me.
11:17You're not planning on taking pictures?
11:20Don't try and stop it, Joey. When a little sister accomplishes something impressive,
11:25it's very important for a big sister to create a huge, embarrassing fuss over her.
11:30Yeah, the more embarrassing, the better.
11:32Thank you. I mean, I know it's not going to be too fun for you to walk the halls of capeside against,
11:36seeing as though it wasn't exactly your favorite place on Earth.
11:39Yeah, but I'm old, right?
11:42Yeah, but I'm old, remember? And that was a long time ago. Things are different now.
11:47Not that different. What are there, like, ten black kids in that school?
11:51Eleven. And don't try to rewrite history, Bess.
11:54I mean, I remember the days that you used to pick me up from kindergarten and complain the whole way home
11:58about some smug, two-faced idiots who thought they were better than you
12:02simply because you had the wrong kind of genes.
12:05Okay, I admit it. I hated high school.
12:08Okay, I admit it. I hated high school.
12:11But that's why I'm so glad it's not like that for you, Joey.
12:14You're talented. And everybody at that school knows it. They've known it for years.
12:19And today they're going to see proof positive that Joey Potter is a force to be reckoned with.
12:25And I painted this so that we all can remember the beacon of knowledge that our teachers shine on us every day.
12:43In closing, I would like to thank Principal Green and all of you for this opportunity to impart my message of unity.
12:54And now, the last of our kidsign modules.
12:57I'd like to ask Joey Potter to step up and grace us with a few words about her creation.
13:09Well, Principal Green said the mural should focus on what unifies us as a school.
13:16And if you think about it, nothing really unifies us.
13:20Even our mascot is divisive.
13:23The minute man right there, you've alienated half the student population.
13:30So, the only thing that I could think of that unites us all, that we all have in common, is that
13:36we all start off in kindergarten thinking that we can be anything that we want to be.
13:44And by the time we get here, we've somehow lost that feeling.
13:50We've all started to believe whatever our parents or our friends have told us about what we can achieve and who we can be in life.
13:57And we've forgotten about that possibility we had when we were younger.
14:04And that's what I think we all have in common.
14:07And that's what the symbol on my painting means.
14:10Possibility.
14:13I painted it because I thought we could all use a daily reminder that
14:17if you believe in yourself, even when the odds seem stacked against you, anything's possible.
14:28So I hope you like it.
14:43Oh shit!
14:45Oh!
14:46Oh shit!
15:12Joey.
15:13Hey.
15:14Wait up.
15:15You okay?
15:16That's what I get for answering the call to public service, public humiliation.
15:20Nobody's humiliated in there, except for maybe the person who did this.
15:23Well, it felt humiliating, Dawson, to me.
15:25Look, it was a silly prank.
15:27I know that.
15:28You put your heart and soul into that, and I don't blame you at all for being angry, but don't turn this into a personal attack on you.
15:35Well, not to stick my nose in here, but just to stick my nose in, of course it was a personal attack.
15:41What?
15:42Well, there were only three murals in that hallway.
15:44Yours was the only one that got touched.
15:46So?
15:47So, either someone didn't like what Joey was trying to say, or someone just didn't like you.
15:51It logically is a lot to be desired.
15:54Dawson, we're in high school here.
15:55It's a veritable society unto its own, okay?
15:58With a pecking order that makes the caste system look forgiving.
16:01But who knows what subtle line you may have crossed, or what offense you might have given without even knowing it?
16:05Paranoid much?
16:06You don't think there's a possibility that there's somebody out there who hates Joey just for being Joey?
16:11Who hates the way she talks, the way she dresses, the way she chews on her lower lip?
16:14Look, I don't chew on my lower lip.
16:17Okay, look, I'm just putting it out there.
16:19I mean, think about it, does anybody come to mind?
16:21Why, so we can all gang up on him and call him dirty names?
16:24I mean, do me a favor, just stay out of this.
16:26It's an act of vandalism, pure and simple.
16:29Some idiot trying to rage against the machine.
16:31It doesn't make any sense.
16:32Perfect.
16:33Heckle and checkle.
16:34I mean, this is exactly what a girl needs in the middle of an existential crisis.
16:38You know what, it's not helping.
16:39So thanks, but no thanks.
16:45Shouldn't we, uh...
16:46No, let her go.
16:51So, uh, have you heard any word on Joey?
16:55She's pretty broken up about it.
16:57Yeah, obviously, I mean, who wouldn't be?
17:00Well, they'll catch the guy and you can have the last laugh.
17:03Huh?
17:04DC, for the book Adam.
17:07Right.
17:08You know what, actually, Jack, I'm thinking about quitting my position.
17:12On the discipline area committee?
17:15Andy, you're like the senior most student representative.
17:18I mean, that's one step below the savior for mankind, as far as college admissions are concerned.
17:23I know, but you know what, it's just taking up way too much time.
17:26And besides that, my schoolwork's starting to slip.
17:29And the more I think about it, the more uncomfortable I feel about sitting in judgment of others.
17:37What?
17:40I'm just a little shocked.
17:43Why?
17:45It's not like you to bail on a commitment.
17:48Come on, Jack, a lot of things aren't like me, but I've done them anyway.
17:57You set the table?
17:59Yeah.
18:06Okay.
18:27Any room at the inn?
18:29Depends.
18:30On what?
18:31Length of the lecture I'm going to be forced to sit through.
18:35No lectures are promised.
18:38Although I do want to say that I'm sorry that what happened today happened.
18:46The whole thing was tragically lame to begin with.
18:49I mean, as if painting on a wall is going to make any change or the slightest bit of difference in school.
18:55Maybe. Maybe not.
18:59For some reason, I don't like the sound of those movies, Dawson.
19:03You painted the mural.
19:06What?
19:08Tonight.
19:09Surprise that bastard when he shows up tomorrow morning.
19:12You know what, I would rather shove red-hot needles underneath my toenails, okay?
19:16So you're going to let some stupid high school prank keep you from finishing something that you obviously care about?
19:22I finished it, Dawson, okay?
19:25It's not my fault that not everybody got a chance to see it.
19:28I can't believe you're being like this.
19:29Like what?
19:30Defeated. Dejected. Demoralized.
19:33Please, Flash, Dawson, I can't always be your plucky little Joey Potter.
19:36I don't have this unlimited reserve of good will and good faith and humanity.
19:40And sometimes I am going to be a little depressed.
19:43It's not about demeanor. It's about not being a victim.
19:47You know, it took me a month to do that, Dawson.
19:50I had to conceive it and I had to execute it.
19:52And you can't just expect me to start over.
19:54Why not?
19:56For the same reason that you haven't shot a roll of film since January.
20:00Joey's completely different.
20:02Really?
20:03Yes. I chose to quit filming. That was a personal decision.
20:07It had nothing to do with the fact that it was poorly received at the festival.
20:12Truthfully, no.
20:18Wow.
20:20And how convenient for you.
20:22What does that mean?
20:25You have all of these choices, Dawson.
20:29You have all of these choices that you just take for granted.
20:32I mean, God.
20:35You know, one day you're a filmmaker and the next day you're not.
20:38And tomorrow you could wake up and you could decide that you wanted to be a sculptor
20:43or you wanted to just backpack through Europe or climb Mount Everest.
20:48And you can do that.
20:49And you can't.
20:50No, I can't.
20:51Why not?
20:52I can't afford to waste the time to go find myself and be artistic.
20:56And I can't afford to just reject reality and go off and chase my pipe dreams.
21:00I can't do it because that's not my life. That's your life.
21:04You know what I think this is about?
21:06What?
21:07I think you're relieved.
21:11I think you're relieved somebody painted over that mural.
21:16Because you never had to go through the hard part.
21:20You never had to show it to the world.
21:22You never had to hear what anyone else thought about it.
21:25You never had to decide for yourself how good or talented you really are.
21:35I don't know why I came over tonight.
21:41Here's your keys to school.
21:44It's what Green gave to me.
21:51Do what you want.
21:55I'll see you later.
22:15Oh, if it's brown, it must be Tuesday.
22:18What do you call these things again, Whitter?
22:20Elephant scabs.
22:21Packed with whole grain goodness.
22:23Did you guys see the look on Principal Green's face?
22:26Huh?
22:27At the union mural thing. I thought the guy was going to have a breakdown.
22:31I think old Joey, she totally lost it. Classic.
22:34Yeah.
22:35Look, I'm writing myself a little poll here.
22:39I guess a true culprit, winner takes all.
22:42You guys in?
22:43How much?
22:44It's only a buck a pop.
22:47Had to be Caulfield.
22:48Yeah, definitely.
22:50What makes you guys so sure?
22:52Because there's no other possibility.
22:56Caulfield it is.
23:17Caulfield.
23:20Do I know you?
23:21No, not really. Thankfully for me.
23:24Look, rumor has it that you have this irrepressible urge to express yourself artistically.
23:31What, that thing yesterday at the mural?
23:33That was pretty classic, huh?
23:36Too bad I can't take credit for it.
23:39So you didn't do it?
23:41I don't know.
23:43I mean, everyone seems to think I did.
23:46So maybe I should just do the polite thing and accept the credit and say thank you.
23:50Maybe.
23:53But look, I'm here to tell you that not everybody thinks what you did was funny.
23:58Well, some people don't have a sense of humor.
24:03Is that your problem?
24:05Yeah, that's me. I'm humorless.
24:12What do you want?
24:15I want you to apologize.
24:17And then I want you to turn yourself in.
24:20And I want you to do it before the day is done.
24:23Why would I do that?
24:25Because this time you just happen to mess with somebody I care about.
24:48Hey, have you seen Joey?
24:50No, she wasn't in her room.
25:17What's this?
25:29Nice rig.
25:31Christmas present.
25:33Man, that sucks, huh?
25:36What's that?
25:38Your parents shorted you on the off-road package.
25:45Put your hands off me.
25:47Tough guy?
25:49What the hell do you want?
25:51I know exactly what I want.
25:57So what's next, Whitter?
25:59You gonna stick your civil servant dad on me?
26:02Can't you see?
26:04I'm fairly shaken in my boots.
26:06Well, you know my name. That's a good starting place.
26:10What I know is I'm gonna count to three and you're gonna step aside.
26:14Dream another dream, cowboy.
26:17That's not how this is gonna shake out.
26:20One.
26:22Two.
26:24Three.
26:26What, are you rocked or something?
26:28Oh no, not yet. Not by a long shot.
26:31What? You want me to say I did it?
26:33Okay, I did it.
26:35Huh, they're satisfied?
26:37Okay, good. Now what are you gonna do about it, huh?
26:39I said what are you gonna do about it?!
26:47I'm gonna go and apologize.
26:50Okay?
27:17No!
27:32Hey!
27:34On your feet!
27:36Both of you!
27:41Inside! Now!
27:47Inside!
27:53Get me Dawson Leary and David Curran, please.
27:56Principal Green, can I talk to you for a minute?
27:58Not now, Andy. I'm in the middle of something.
28:00Please, it'll only take a second and it's really important.
28:03What is it?
28:05I'd like to tender my resignation from the disciplinary committee.
28:10What?
28:12I think that you have this idea about me that I'm somebody I'm not,
28:17that I'm somebody with unwavering integrity, and I can't live up to that.
28:21Can we discuss this later at length?
28:23I don't know that there's anything more to discuss, Principal Green.
28:38Now, since neither Mr. Witter nor Mr. Caulfield choose to clarify the meaning of their little title fight in the parking lot,
28:46I'm counting on their friends to look out for their best interest.
28:49Mr. Leary?
28:51Don't say anything, Dawson.
28:53Mr. Curran?
28:55Not a word, Dave.
28:57Well, somebody better speak up, and you better speak up fast.
29:01Because a timely call to the dean over at Dartmouth will trigger an immediate review on your early admission status.
29:08And Mr. Witter, one more suspension on your record and you can bend down and kiss this whole higher education deal goodbye.
29:21Okay.
29:23I have no other alternative.
29:24It's because of the mural.
29:26Hey, shut up, Dawson! This is not your fight!
29:29It's not yours either.
29:31So what you're saying is that the reason that Mr. Witter picked a fight was because he believes that Mr. Caulfield had something to do with the vandalization of the Unity mural?
29:39I went nowhere near that thing.
29:42As if I could give a rat's ass about some stupid Chinese drawing.
29:46If you didn't go anywhere near it, how'd you know what it was?
29:49That's a very good question.
29:55Anyone could have taken a look. I've just been working on it for weeks.
29:59Yeah, at night and before school, but other than that, it's been sealed up tight as a drum.
30:03From whatever closest friends, I didn't even know what it was.
30:06Yeah, this is ridiculous.
30:08Not to mention, if you didn't, as you say, give a rat's ass, then why would you go through all the trouble of finding out what it was?
30:14Check out the floor, Caulfield. I think you just painted yourself into a corner.
30:22Okay, you got me.
30:25Busted!
30:27You know, yeah, Jackson Pollock sent some meaningless mural.
30:30You know what, for one thing, it was ugly.
30:32You know, it was an eyesore.
30:34And not to mention, why do I have to look at it?
30:37I don't know.
30:38For one thing, it was ugly.
30:40You know, it was an eyesore.
30:42And not to mention, why do I have to look at some trivial girl's little message to the masses every morning?
30:48Frankly, it offends me.
30:51Possibility is offensive to you?
30:56I'm white. I'm rich.
30:58That's all the possibility I need.
31:09Say again?
31:13You heard me.
31:17The advanced copy of the PSAT that Dawson had.
31:21I'm the one who stole it.
31:23That's how I did so well on the test, Jack.
31:26That's how I scored in the 99th percentile.
31:29That was you?
31:32Oh, Andy.
31:35I know.
31:36I know.
31:38Surprise, surprise.
31:40Why? I mean, you knew that stuff cold.
31:43Inside and out, backwards and forwards.
31:45If anybody was going to ace that test, it was going to be you.
31:50I was just sitting there on the table like this piece of forbidden fruit,
31:55and not a chance of getting caught.
31:59I don't know. It just seemed like the answer to all my problems at the time.
32:03What do you mean?
32:07I thought that, you know, if I aced the test,
32:12then everybody would think I was okay again.
32:15You know, that that would somehow convince them.
32:20But now that I really am okay,
32:23I'm having a hard time living with myself.
32:26Hence your resignation from the disciplinary committee.
32:29Jack.
32:31The past six months, I have been walking around feeling like the biggest hypocrite.
32:36I mean, don't you see, I've been so hard on all these other people
32:40just as a way of punishing myself.
32:46But now, it's time to make amends for that.
32:51Wait a minute. What are you planning on doing?
32:53I'm going to tell Principal Green tomorrow.
32:56No, you're not.
32:58Yeah, I am.
32:59No, no, Andy, look, think about this, okay?
33:02You screwed up, fine, okay?
33:05It was a moment of weakness, but
33:08do you really want to get kicked out of school for cheating on something
33:11that has a lot of practice in front of it?
33:14Jack, do you know what I want?
33:17I want to get out of here.
33:19Jack, do you know what I want?
33:22I want to be free of this thing once and for all.
33:27Free of what I did and
33:30I want to be able to go to the mirror and recognize who I am again.
33:34Andy, there's got to be a better way.
33:37Jack, I've thought long and hard about this, okay?
33:42There is no better way.
33:44Not for me.
33:49Do you mind I'm having this steak for dinner tonight with a nice Bernays sauce?
33:54What am I having?
33:56Burnt water.
33:58Doug, I'm a soldier here, returning from the killing fields.
34:02I mean, you know, where's my Purple Heart, my ticker tape parade?
34:06Watch it on your black and white.
34:08You know, the one with the coat hanger as an antenna at the Chevron station?
34:12Well, you're probably going to be pumping gas for the rest of your natural born life, Pacey.
34:15All the boneheaded moves.
34:17What are you talking about?
34:19I was right, it was Matt Caulfield.
34:21Yeah, and that lets you off the hook how?
34:23Because.
34:25The guy deserves whatever he gets, okay?
34:27Preferably his silver spoon shoved up his ass.
34:29That's funny, Pacey. That's really funny.
34:31Oh, this is rich.
34:33Here I am trying to do the right thing.
34:35You know, sometimes a guy just can't win.
34:37No, he can't.
34:39Not if he completely overreacts to a situation.
34:41If you're going to throw away your future, just do it on your own account, okay?
34:45Oh, hey, don't get me wrong.
34:47Don't think I ever cared here.
34:49I was only doing Dawson a favor.
34:51Dawson?
34:53Yes, Dawson.
34:55You know, looking out for you.
34:57Think back with me.
34:59Way back.
35:01You know, like the beginning of the school year.
35:03Dawson Leary returns from the big city a changed man determined to sever ties with a girl across the creek.
35:05So, he has trusted friend to look after said girl during the delicate transitional period.
35:11Trusted friend, of course, he obliges.
35:12And now trusted friend gets his head handed to him on a platter.
35:18So, you guys just traded me off like some sort of baseball card?
35:23Is that what this is about?
35:25What?
35:27Us. You and me. I thought that...
35:30Thought what?
35:33I guess I thought something else, Pacey.
35:43You have consistently flaunted my authority, Mr. Caulfield.
35:47You have undermined the ability for my teachers to educate.
35:51And now, you challenge my commitment to reshape this school into a community.
35:59Principal Green.
36:01It was all a mistake.
36:03I'm sorry, Mr. Caulfield.
36:05I'm sorry.
36:07I'm sorry.
36:09I'm sorry.
36:10Man.
36:12It was only a mural.
36:14Yes, it was only a mural.
36:17But it was so much more than just a mural.
36:20You don't fool me, Mr. Caulfield.
36:23I know exactly who you are.
36:26You've been led to believe you're untouchable.
36:29So, you disrupt the school. You disobey the rules.
36:32You serve to divide the student body with your arrogance and your attitude.
36:35Now, you may be smart and you may be rich, Mr. Caulfield, but you are not above the law.
36:42And for that reason, it is my decision that you be expelled from Capeside High.
36:54Expelled.
36:56You heard me.
36:58For the rest of the year.
37:00For the rest of the year.
37:01Principal Green.
37:03Do you have any idea what my father's going to say about this?
37:07Yes.
37:09I have a very good idea of what your father's going to say about this.
37:32So, what's going on in there?
37:35I don't know. It's hard to tell.
37:37No sign of birch cane or knuckle wrapping?
37:41No.
37:44Let's face it, he's going to be lucky if he gets off without another suspension.
37:51The way things are going, I mean, you should have just asked me to look out for him.
37:55Excuse me?
37:57I know all about the little wife-swapping arrangement.
38:01Wife-swapping?
38:03Julie, that's not how it was and you know it.
38:06Then how was it?
38:08Well, first of all, it was months ago. I mean, things were very different between us.
38:13You're right. Back then, I felt like you still understood me.
38:17And I don't now.
38:18Julie, it wasn't about pity. I couldn't be there for you, but I wanted you to have someone you could turn to, someone you could talk to.
38:25Now tell me, where is the harm in that?
38:29Well, it just would have been nice if that someone could have mustered a shred of genuine concern, Dawson.
38:34Julie, that someone is in that room right now because he's got a hell of a lot more than a shred of genuine concern.
38:40I don't know.
38:42Julie, why are you doing this?
38:44Doing what?
38:46Casting aspersions on people who obviously care about you.
38:51I mean, do you really think that I don't want the best for you?
38:55I mean, Pacey.
38:57I mean, Pacey's a lot of things.
38:59He's got a lot of things.
39:01He's got a lot of things.
39:03He's got a lot of things.
39:05He's got a lot of things.
39:07He's got a lot of things.
39:08I mean, Pacey.
39:10I mean, Pacey's a lot of things.
39:12Impulsive, thoughtless, stubborn, but after everything that's happened this year, can you honestly doubt for a second that he doesn't truly care about you?
39:38I don't know.
40:08I've been wondering about the rhymes we've known since then, how they change the way we see.
40:27In the dark, you and me, we could feel but not see.
40:38For the record, I like that man in there.
40:41In fact, I'll go even better.
40:43He is a great human being.
40:45He's got the fairness of Lincoln, the charisma of Martin Luther King Jr.
40:49He's even-handed and temperate and, if I may say so myself, acutely susceptible to a certain type of irreverent humor.
40:57So he let you off?
40:59Not exactly.
41:01But he didn't suspend you?
41:03Well, let's just say I'm not packing my bags quite yet.
41:05Although three days off would have provided a welcome diversion.
41:08So Devol, what happened in there?
41:11I'm going to be a mentor.
41:13Be a what?
41:15A mentor. You know, the Capeside mentoring program.
41:17Since I seem to be completely incapable of suppressing my own juvenile impulses, Principal Green seems to think that I would benefit from the company and example of someone half my age.
41:30That's so funny.
41:32But what about the poor kid?
41:34What are you going to teach him?
41:36What are you talking about?
41:38Are you going to teach him the importance of keeping a secret?
41:40Like, say, from, you know, Joey, for example?
41:44Oh, that.
41:47She told you?
41:49Yeah.
41:51Well, what do you think the odds are that you, yourself, will be as enlightened and forgiving as a person as Principal Green just was?
41:59Not good, Pace.
42:00Not good.
42:11To say that I am profoundly shocked and disturbed by what you did would be an understatement.
42:17Your behavior was deceitful, immoral, and ultimately a disgrace to this school.
42:24I know.
42:26I know.
42:29I just wish that I could have told you sooner.
42:32You know I am going to have to inform the Educational Testing Service, and that they're going to cancel your scores, and that you're going to have to forfeit your chance at a merit scholarship.
42:43I'm aware of that, yes.
42:45Now, you say that there were other students who were aware of this test, but you were the only one who exploited it. Are you absolutely certain about that?
42:56Absolutely certain.
43:00What do you want me to do here?
43:02What am I supposed to do about this, Annie?
43:04Um, well, I heard that Matt Caulfield was expelled from Capeside today, and what I did was no less grave or serious an offense.
43:24Is that what you think?
43:26I've cleared out my locker, and I know that all actions have consequences.
43:31Annie.
43:33Most of all, I'm sorry for letting you down, and for letting myself down.
43:41Annie, you and Matt Caulfield have nothing in common.
43:47He is a selfish, spoiled young man who has no sense of right or wrong, who actually takes pleasure in hurting others.
43:56The only person that you hurt is yourself.
43:59But I did cheat, and it was wrong, and I should be punished for it.
44:05When you were on the disciplinary committee, one of the things that I tried to teach you was the idea of proportionality.
44:12Make the punishment fit the crime, yes, but also look at the person.
44:18Now, Matt Caulfield, he doesn't deserve nor would he benefit from my leniency.
44:24But Annie McPhee, she just might.
44:34I don't know what to say.
44:37Don't say anything.
44:39It's your stuff. Put it back in your locker.
44:43As for your punishment, I have to think about that for a couple of days.
44:50I have to think about that for a couple of days.
44:59Thank you, Principal Green. Thank you.
45:19What on earth?
45:32Hey, Potter.
45:34PC, what are you doing?
45:38Painting.
45:40Oh.
45:42I just thought it would be good if you could start with a blank canvas.
45:45Blank canvas, huh?
45:46Yeah, you know, wipe the slate clean, tabula rasa, return to point A, all that good stuff.
45:54And who may I ask told you I was planning on repainting the mural in the first place?
45:59It's just this guy I met out on the street.
46:02Some guy?
46:04Yeah, you know, your typical do-gooder type.
46:09So, are you going to thank me?
46:13For what?
46:14For what?
46:16Well, for all manner of things. You know, like defending your honor, bucking the system.
46:22Tilting at windmills while on the throes of a misguided hero complex?
46:30Oh, yeah, that too.
46:31That too.
46:36Pacey, if I was going to thank you for anything, it would be for being yourself.
46:42And, you know, not caring what anybody else thinks.
46:45And for knowing in your heart what's right and wrong.
46:48And for being there this year.
46:54When I needed you the most.
47:02You're welcome.
47:07Do you want to help?
47:13One condition.
47:15Sure, name it.
47:17Be honest.
47:20The only reason you've been hanging out with me is simply because Dawson told you to?
47:27Yep, that's the only reason.
47:29You need to get a life.
47:59One last time.
48:29You need to get a life.
