00:00:00All right, everyone, welcome back into another live edition of the Patriots Beat podcast
00:00:27here on the CLNS Media Network presented by our wonderful friends over at GameTime and
00:00:33Factor Meals.
00:00:34It is Brian Hines back as always with Alex Barth because the Patriots' second preseason
00:00:39game is in the books.
00:00:40They dropped it 14-13 to the Philadelphia Eagles Thursday night.
00:00:46And although it was a late loss, Jarrod Mayo was a little upset, his first loss as a head
00:00:51coach, there was some encouraging stuff to take away and talk about.
00:00:55So we'll get right into it.
00:00:56And Alex, I thought long and hard about how to start this show with either Drake May or
00:01:03Bryce Berenger's opening punts, which was an absolute dime in the coffin corner.
00:01:08But we'll tease the good stuff and we'll talk about Drake May and the New England Patriots
00:01:12quarterback room to open it.
00:01:15Because Jacoby Percet started, he got the first quarter, which was three series, and
00:01:20then they turned it over to Drake May.
00:01:21He got the second and third quarter, which ended up being four series of work.
00:01:26We finally got game action, live Drake May, first two series, even with most of the starting
00:01:33offensive line, they just swapped out Nick Leverett for David Andrews.
00:01:37So we got some protection and there were some promising, encouraging signs from Drake May.
00:01:42It wasn't all perfect.
00:01:44I'm not taking my victory lap, even though I want to, but it was a pretty encouraging
00:01:50kind of a preseason debut because we just saw him for six plays last week.
00:01:54There was some encouraging stuff from Drake May last night.
00:01:57Well, you're not taking the victory lap, going back a couple of weeks to a crossover we did.
00:02:01That's why you're Drake May fan number two and Evan Lazar is Drake May fan number one.
00:02:04I don't know if you saw the interaction between Evan and Drake in the locker room last night,
00:02:09but Evan was ecstatic when Drake May walked by him.
00:02:13Yeah, I thought it was good.
00:02:14I thought it was encouraging.
00:02:15I saw a lot of what I wanted to see.
00:02:17And I mean, let's call that what it is, his first real extended NFL game experience.
00:02:23Last week, seven snaps, mostly runs really only threw down the field.
00:02:28Once there was, when we talked about this at the time, there was really nothing there
00:02:32in terms of what we could learn in this game.
00:02:35He was out there.
00:02:36He was running the full offense.
00:02:38There was one point where they got backed up and I think it was an incomplete pass.
00:02:41It actually might've been the deep ball that Jayvon Baker dropped, which we'll get to,
00:02:46that they're in like third and he had taken a big hit on second down there in third and long.
00:02:53And it's like, all right, here, you know, shotgun draw, whatever, move on.
00:02:56Don't don't get him hit.
00:02:58And they go five wide and he threw the ball down the field.
00:03:01So they gave him plenty of chances.
00:03:02I thought he looked, I thought he looked loose.
00:03:06I mean that in a good way.
00:03:07Like I just thought he looked comfortable.
00:03:09He looked relaxed.
00:03:10He looked like he was out there having fun, just slinging the ball.
00:03:12He kind of talked about it after the game.
00:03:14He was allowed to do some of the stuff with his legs that maybe he wasn't able to do as
00:03:17much in practice.
00:03:19You saw his ability to create through pressure.
00:03:21You saw his ability to create out of structure, made some good in-structure throws too.
00:03:25Like you said, it wasn't perfect.
00:03:27Sailed a couple of throws.
00:03:28Keishon Booty beat him out once.
00:03:31Keishon Booty bailed him out once.
00:03:32And then another one of Jayvon Baker, maybe could have been picked, did have a fumbled
00:03:38snap.
00:03:38And look, anytime you have a fumbled snap, it's on both players.
00:03:41But going back and re-watching that play, it felt like more of a Drake May issue than
00:03:46a Nick Leverett issue.
00:03:47So it wasn't all perfect.
00:03:49But you saw a lot of why people are so excited about him and why, and I'm not in his group,
00:03:57but why a lot of people wanted to start week one.
00:04:00There's real high level upside there.
00:04:03And he was able to show it off a little bit.
00:04:04Now again, it's against the Eagles second defense.
00:04:06It's just one game.
00:04:07But I think you have to wait, come away from that feeling very happy about what you saw
00:04:12and the idea that he's like two years away.
00:04:14I mean, come on, what are we doing here?
00:04:16He's going to start this year at some point, whether it's week one, maybe that's rushing
00:04:22ahead of ourselves.
00:04:23But yeah, I think the big thing was just that the fact that he was able to run around out
00:04:28there and play kind of off script, off structure, which we mentioned a few times now, we've
00:04:34done like three shows since he's last spoken on Friday or Tuesday, whatever the days are
00:04:39at this point.
00:04:40But where he's like, once I can get out of the red jersey and move around a little bit,
00:04:44things could be a little bit different out there.
00:04:45And you saw it was just kind of night and day where he's still playing in structure
00:04:49at start.
00:04:50But then once it breaks down, then he can get out of the pocket.
00:04:53He can move around.
00:04:54You know, there was that third and 10 to Baker.
00:04:57Like it was a third and 10 because he picks up like five yards on just a keeper before
00:05:03that.
00:05:03Or there was one after the veteran low, his first drive after the veteran low false start
00:05:08at second and 11.
00:05:10You know, he kind of runs around and he picks up a couple yards.
00:05:13I believe that was on that instance.
00:05:14And then, you know, it's a manageable third down and they convert it.
00:05:16So he was able to make plays with his legs.
00:05:19Obviously, the touchdown then, right, they were calling some of the stuff.
00:05:22It seemed like he was comfortable with at North Carolina.
00:05:26So it wasn't a surprise that he looked like Drake May.
00:05:28They let Drake May do Drake May stuff, and he looked like Drake May, the number three
00:05:32overall pick and who toured up at North Carolina there.
00:05:36So, yeah, there was some things to work on.
00:05:39Still, you know, you mentioned a couple of misses in the flat.
00:05:42The one down the left sideline to Baker, like Drake May loves to give his guys chances when
00:05:47he sees it one on one.
00:05:48But, you know, Mitchell Wilcox was open, like kind of underneath on a crosser.
00:05:52Maybe they look at that and say, OK, let's take the profit there instead of trying to
00:05:56get the shot.
00:05:57But I thought like the footwork looked really good.
00:05:59The fundamentals, even though he wasn't as he wasn't under center as much.
00:06:03I think he only took like six, five or six snaps under center.
00:06:07So, yeah, they let him get in the gun.
00:06:09Even a lot of empty, which, you know, is kind of for a young quarterback.
00:06:13And they let him run and do a lot of stuff that he did at North Carolina.
00:06:17So I thought, yeah, you walked away from that.
00:06:20Again, maybe not starting week one, but it was very promising and encouraging.
00:06:26And, you know, you assume the people who are saying he's got to sit this whole year.
00:06:30Hopefully they kind of come back and say, like, OK, he could start at some point this
00:06:34season.
00:06:34We'll just kind of see what that is.
00:06:37Yeah, it's all about closing the gap.
00:06:39We've talked about this and it's probably too little, too late at this point for week
00:06:45one because, you know, there's five practices left the week before the Bengals game doesn't
00:06:49count.
00:06:50That's game prep.
00:06:50And can he do enough?
00:06:52It's not just about being better than Jacobo Berset and Jacobo will get to Jacobo Berset.
00:06:57He's kind of come back to Drake May too.
00:06:59He's part of the reason this gap is closer.
00:07:01But you guys know how I feel about this.
00:07:04Once you put him in, he's in and saying Drake May's the week one starter is more than just
00:07:09saying he should start week one.
00:07:11If you're saying Drake May's the week one starter, you're saying you're comfortable
00:07:14with him for all 17 games that you do not worry about him getting through a 17 game
00:07:20season.
00:07:20So can Drake May show enough in these next five, six practices, whatever it is, and in
00:07:26the game against Washington that you're perfectly comfortable with him for a full season?
00:07:30I just don't think there's enough time there to prove that.
00:07:33But he certainly closed the gap.
00:07:35Yeah.
00:07:36Yeah.
00:07:37Everyone knows I've been like a week one truth or I think he's always been able to start
00:07:41week one.
00:07:41But I think realistically, maybe now you're looking at the back to back home games week
00:07:48five, week six, Miami and Houston.
00:07:51Then you shorten his season too.
00:07:53So that way, like theoretically, he's playing a college season, right?
00:07:56Like he only has 12, 13 games.
00:07:58You don't have to overextend them to 16, 17 games where we saw how that worked with
00:08:04Mac, right?
00:08:04Like they fell off after that late by which they have again this year.
00:08:07And that's pretty common.
00:08:10Even outside of Mac, rookies kind of hit the wall.
00:08:12So maybe avoid a late season slump if you give him the first month and then let Jacoby
00:08:18take the first month.
00:08:18And maybe you iron out some of those offensive line things that we'll talk about, I'm sure.
00:08:23So, um, but Gerard Mayo was asked this morning, is Drake may going to get at least some starting
00:08:30reps at practice, which I think we all want to at least see some of that as well.
00:08:35Cause he still hasn't taken one starting rep at practice during training camp.
00:08:39They're back out there tomorrow.
00:08:40He said, uh, Mayo said they'll have a coaching meeting today to kind of figure that out,
00:08:45see what path they want to go.
00:08:46Are you expecting to get out there tomorrow and see Drake take any reps with David Andrews?
00:08:52And that starting offense, or do you think it's all just going to be Jacoby still here?
00:08:56I mean, I would hope so.
00:08:57This is what we talked about him and this was going into the first preseason game, which
00:09:01obviously the timeline shifted, but could he go out there and improve to the coaching
00:09:06staff that he deserves and earn those reps with the starters?
00:09:10I think he's done that.
00:09:11I wouldn't give them all to him because I still think you got to get your code reset
00:09:14ready for the regular season, but I'd be a little disappointed if this week we don't
00:09:18see Drake may more with the ones.
00:09:20Look at what they did in 2021 was cam Newton would rep first with the ones, but then Mack
00:09:27Jones would come in and he would get more reps than Newton did with the ones.
00:09:30And I think a setup like this, at least for the week, makes sense.
00:09:33The next week when it's time to get ready for Cincinnati, you rebalance it again.
00:09:36But I think May's earned the chance.
00:09:39I think May's earned the chance to rep more with the one stride.
00:09:41Mayo said this morning, it's still a competition.
00:09:43All right, let's see a quarterback competition.
00:09:45Then turn on it.
00:09:45Like it hasn't looked like one in practice.
00:09:48And I get he's saying like everybody's competing, but is it a competition in the sense that
00:09:52everybody's out here competing?
00:09:54Or is it a competition in the sense that you're really going to let these guys go head to
00:09:57head and see who's better?
00:09:58Because it's certainly been the first.
00:09:59Of course, it's been the first.
00:10:01We haven't seen that second thing yet.
00:10:03This would be the time.
00:10:04I mean, it's now or never if you're going to do that.
00:10:06Yep.
00:10:07But uh, speaking of Jacoby, uh, they got the first three series of work finished three
00:10:11of seven, three of seven, 17 yards in the interception in the end zone.
00:10:17I think early in camp, we were talking about the gap widening because Jacoby was playing
00:10:22so well, right between him and Drake may, but now it seems to be coming the other way,
00:10:26maybe because Jacoby hasn't been playing so well.
00:10:29The accuracy continues to kind of be sporadic.
00:10:32He had a miss deep to Jalen Polk.
00:10:35He had a miss short to pop, even though, you know, he slipped at the top of his route.
00:10:38And then the interception was a miscommunication with him and Austin Hooper.
00:10:42And, you know, if he wants this job, like he can't be turning the ball over, right?
00:10:46Like he's got to be the steady veteran in there, take care of the football.
00:10:50And that's, you know, Bursett's pass.
00:10:52He doesn't really throw a lot of interceptions, but you've seen it in camp.
00:10:56Like he had two, I think in the joint practice and then one in the game last night.
00:11:00So where are you kind of at with Jacoby Bursett right now?
00:11:04Cause it feels like he's, he started camp pretty well and he's kind of coming back the
00:11:09other way at this point.
00:11:10Yeah, he, it was a rough week and you got to take the full camp picture for what it
00:11:14is, but it, the accuracy issues are starting to get in the way of the other progress he's
00:11:19made.
00:11:19And I think on the, on the, the play with, with Austin Hooper, that was a matter of
00:11:24frustration.
00:11:25Like he didn't want to leave the field with the field goal.
00:11:26Now I throw it away.
00:11:28And as a veteran, see if you can convince John May to let you go for it.
00:11:30They're fourth and three from the, what was it?
00:11:34Eight yard line, something like that.
00:11:35Like that's not an unrealistic spot to go, but it was a rough week.
00:11:40It was a rough week and he was spraying the ball.
00:11:42And if it looks like this, it could get tough on offense because at the, the one thing you
00:11:47can say about Corver said throughout summer, and maybe I was higher on him than most.
00:11:50But the one thing I think he could say definitively, he was giving guys a chance to make
00:11:54plays.
00:11:55He was creating opportunities for the offense, whether those opportunities were seized or
00:11:59not, it was, you know, situation situation, but he was creating opportunities for the
00:12:04offense.
00:12:05He didn't do that over the last week, both in that game and the joint practice, even
00:12:08going back to Monday, there were, there were plays that were just not competitive.
00:12:12And that's the one, that's the one thing about your corporate set you're looking for.
00:12:15Like he's going to give you a chance to make plays.
00:12:18He's not going to make the stupid place.
00:12:19He's not going to make the overwhelming negative plays.
00:12:22And we started to see some of those creep in here the last few weeks.
00:12:26Yep.
00:12:27That's the thing.
00:12:27Like if him and Drake are both going to be a little sporadic, right?
00:12:31Like you saw Drake had the two inaccurate ones in the flat.
00:12:34So if they're both going to be sporadic like that, like that still leans me to the rookie
00:12:39because just the hot, the upside is higher with May and he can run around and make those
00:12:44plays with his legs.
00:12:44So yeah, you'd like to see Jacoby kind of take care of the football a little bit better.
00:12:49And like you said, let those guys make plays.
00:12:51So, right.
00:12:52Yeah.
00:12:53We'll see Saturday, Sunday, Monday, right.
00:12:55They're practicing Monday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.
00:12:59Okay.
00:12:59So tons of practice time here before their last preseason game down there in Washington.
00:13:05So, uh, we'll keep an eye out on those two, obviously to see how the reps and how the
00:13:09performance look, uh, over this next week, but behind them or anything, you didn't have
00:13:15anything else on the top two, right?
00:13:17Uh, I think that's pretty much it.
00:13:19All right.
00:13:20So behind them, Joe Milton was third up today or yesterday.
00:13:25Uh, got two, three series of work after May.
00:13:28And then Bailey Zappi came in for the last two minute drill.
00:13:31Uh, wasn't as flashy for Joe Milton this time as we're now in the full Joe Milton experience,
00:13:36but, um, you still saw the arm strength.
00:13:40Like he had the one, it was the complete breakdown and he's rolling out to his right.
00:13:43It just flicks it 40 yards.
00:13:45So, uh, I don't know.
00:13:47We're just completely in the Joe Milton experience right now.
00:13:50Yeah.
00:13:50I mean, that was, I, I, I joked last night on Twitter.
00:13:53Next time somebody asked me to explain Joe Milton, I'm just going to show them that play
00:13:57goes the wrong way on the play.
00:13:58Action gets out into open space with two defenders is able to run by them.
00:14:03Completely off balance.
00:14:04Throws the ball 40 yards on a rope, hits the wide receiver, right?
00:14:07In the hands, but it is a little bit of a, of a leading ball into a defender.
00:14:10Wide receiver gets hit.
00:14:11Can't make the catch.
00:14:12That's Joe.
00:14:13That's Joe Milton right there.
00:14:14They're the good and the bad and all of it.
00:14:15You ride the roller coaster and he's, I still think he's worth keeping on the roster.
00:14:21He is a project player.
00:14:22You see what you have.
00:14:23He's an interesting project.
00:14:24He's a fun project.
00:14:26That doesn't mean he's coming for the starting job anytime soon.
00:14:28I went on this rant.
00:14:30I don't know if I did it on this show.
00:14:31I did it on another show that back in 2021 or in 2022 in the, or no, whatever the fall of 21,
00:14:39I was telling people, Hey, there's this guy at Western Kentucky.
00:14:42That's setting all these records.
00:14:44He's kind of a good fit for what Josh McDaniels likes.
00:14:48They should draft him as a backup quarterback to Mac Jones.
00:14:51And everybody was like, you're crazy.
00:14:52Shut up.
00:14:52They have a quarterback.
00:14:53They don't need to draft a quarterback.
00:14:55They drafted Bailey's happy.
00:14:56And I was like, Hey, they have a good backup.
00:14:59Like, yes, this is good.
00:15:00This is a good thing.
00:15:01Then zappy feet.
00:15:02And I became like the zappy guy.
00:15:04Like zappy became my guy.
00:15:05You had the fever.
00:15:07And well, then zappy fever happened.
00:15:08And I tell everybody, everybody's like, you must be thrilled.
00:15:10And I'm like, well, yeah, I'm happy for him.
00:15:12But I still just think he's a backup quarterback.
00:15:15I still think that's what he is.
00:15:16And then suddenly I had to become like this anti zappy guy.
00:15:19Cause I was telling people he wasn't the second coming of Tom Brady.
00:15:22I just wanted to enjoy Bailey's happy being the backup quarterback for the Patriots.
00:15:25And it didn't happen.
00:15:28I don't want to have to do that again with Joe Milton.
00:15:31I really don't.
00:15:32I think last night was painted a really good picture of who Joe Milton is.
00:15:36There's definitely intriguing traits to keep him around.
00:15:38Maybe he becomes a starter in the league down the road,
00:15:40either in New England or elsewhere.
00:15:42The very least he becomes a positive trade piece for you,
00:15:45but he's not, he shouldn't be in the mix for the starting quarterback job this year.
00:15:50He's still too far away.
00:15:51And I think you saw both sides of that last night.
00:15:54And that was a good, it kind of helped people really understand we're working with.
00:15:58Cause we talked about this last week, the people who don't watch college football,
00:16:02maybe don't understand he's a tougher player to evaluate Joe Milton
00:16:05than the average quarterback.
00:16:07And I think you needed last night as a bit of a cold shower
00:16:10to understand the full makeup of what he is.
00:16:12Yep, exactly.
00:16:13That's the Joe Milton experience, but yeah, uh, you mentioned Bailey's happy.
00:16:17Would, I would have liked to see Joe Milton get that two minute drill.
00:16:23At the end.
00:16:23Yes, absolutely.
00:16:24I didn't need to see Bailey's happy do that.
00:16:26Let Joe Milton sling it, please.
00:16:28Yeah.
00:16:28That felt weird that they let Bailey's happy do that.
00:16:32I don't know if they're trying to showcase him or something, but like,
00:16:36if you're trying, if a team really wanted Bailey's happy,
00:16:38he's got like what seven, eight starts of regular season game film out there.
00:16:43Like why would they care about his preseason game film?
00:16:46I'm sure they would look at it, but they're going to put more weight into the,
00:16:49the regular season film that he already has out there.
00:16:51So I don't get what they're really doing with Bailey's happy here,
00:16:55but because he got the two minute drill, I would have loved to see that to Joe Milton.
00:16:58But I did see your roster projection on 95 sports hub.com.
00:17:03And you had Bailey's happy on it, I believe.
00:17:05So I had all four quarterbacks.
00:17:07I still think they're going to need the buffer quarterback.
00:17:12I didn't want to overdo it with the veteran TBD that I do on my roster projection.
00:17:16So it's zappy for now, but I, I, I think there is going to be a buffer quarterback
00:17:22and maybe it is happy.
00:17:23The fact that they let him play last night to me was this, uh, I don't know.
00:17:27You want to call it a sign of respect?
00:17:29Like they didn't want him to be the only quarterback that didn't play that.
00:17:32That last drive doesn't meet that last drive.
00:17:34Doesn't it's a two minute drive, right?
00:17:36It's the very end of the game.
00:17:39That just seemed like a, we want you to play.
00:17:40Cause we want you to play sort of thing.
00:17:42We want, we don't want you to, we don't want it to be look, Bailey's happy.
00:17:46Didn't play.
00:17:47That's why I think they put them out there.
00:17:49So that shows me they still have some level of respect for them.
00:17:52And maybe they keep them around as the buffer quarterback.
00:17:55So by buffer, do you mean like Jacoby Brissett gets hurt early and they don't want Drake
00:18:00made a play or behind Drake?
00:18:02Okay.
00:18:02Yeah.
00:18:03And, and that wouldn't even necessarily mean within the game.
00:18:06If Jacoby Brissett gets hurt, like late in the fourth quarter, you want to throw Drake
00:18:09may out there.
00:18:09I mean, if it's high ankle sprain four weeks in like week two, and you don't want it now,
00:18:17it's Drake may on a short week.
00:18:18And then going out to San Francisco, let's let Zappy start these two.
00:18:22He started games in the league before it's a tough, tough couple of weeks.
00:18:26And then we'll, we'll go to may later.
00:18:27Jacoby will come back or whatever.
00:18:29Once, once Drake may goes in, you don't need the buffer quarterback anymore.
00:18:32Jacoby Brissett's your backup unless he gets hurt.
00:18:35Then you, I guess you still need a third guy, but at that point I just might go with Joe
00:18:37Milton.
00:18:38Um, cause I, I just don't that the, the, the, the optics of Joe Milton being the first rookie
00:18:44quarterback to start for the Patriots this year would not be great.
00:18:47Yeah.
00:18:48That'd probably be tough.
00:18:49If he's backing up Drake may once Drake may is the starter.
00:18:51I'm actually very okay with that.
00:18:53Um, but if, if Jacoby gets hurt and you don't want to put Drake man yet, I do think you
00:18:59need a buffer.
00:19:00And if they, if there's still something about Zappy that they want to keep them around,
00:19:04like they have this, it's fine.
00:19:09Find 53, find 52 other guys that locks.
00:19:11Now look, I had Zappy is the 51st player.
00:19:13I had him right on the boundary, but they have the kind of roster right now where you
00:19:18can keep four quarterbacks.
00:19:19It's not that many guys in other positions that you're clamoring to keep on the roster,
00:19:23right?
00:19:23It's, you know, when it came down to honestly, one of the switches I made Arman Watts, and
00:19:29maybe we'll get to him later.
00:19:31Didn't play most of that game, only played late free agency signing, thought he was going
00:19:35to make it.
00:19:36But when you have guys like Jeremiah farms playing the way he is, when you have guys
00:19:39like Tristan Hill playing the way he is Arman Watts, what has he done in this camp?
00:19:44Like he really hasn't been around.
00:19:45Are you going to keep an extra defensive tackle?
00:19:48Who's probably not really going to play, or are you going to keep a fourth quarterback?
00:19:51You might go fourth quarterback there.
00:19:53And I know people say, well, you can get Zappy on the practice squad.
00:19:56Maybe that's ultimately what they end up doing.
00:19:58And he serves that buffer role from the practice squad.
00:20:00I wouldn't roll that out either, but I don't know.
00:20:03I just, I feel like that fourth quarterback, that buffer quarterback is an important role.
00:20:09And maybe at least to start that guy ends up on the roster.
00:20:12And that's the other thing.
00:20:13Once May takes over now, you don't need the buffer quarterback.
00:20:16That's not necessarily a 17 game roster.
00:20:20Yep.
00:20:21But, uh, you could probably get one of those defensive tackles on the practice squad too.
00:20:25Right.
00:20:25Yeah, because I still think if they wave Bailey Zappy, like I find it hard to believe he'd come
00:20:32back again on the practice squad with how they've remodeled their quarterback room.
00:20:36Like, cause he came back last year because he thought he could beat out Mack Jones and
00:20:40he was right by thinking that, but you know, this, this, the way this room is set up,
00:20:45it might be tougher to kind of convince him to come back on the practice squad.
00:20:49So, uh, maybe you keep him, don't give him that chance.
00:20:52So then you can, you know, Sam Roberts comes back on the practice squad or Mike Purcell or
00:20:56one of those guys.
00:20:57So we'll see how that shakes out.
00:20:59But, uh, that was 20 plus minutes on the quarterbacks.
00:21:02Again, uh, Bursette kind of falling back to earth, really encouraging stuff from Drake
00:21:07May and his four series of work.
00:21:08So, uh, again, practice tomorrow.
00:21:11We'll see how the reps look.
00:21:12If there's any change in that at all, Gerard Mayo said the competition's still open.
00:21:16So, uh, we'll, we'll see how that looks, but let's take a very quick break and we'll hear
00:21:21from our friends over at game time.
00:21:24I got to talk to you guys about game time, which is the authorized ticket marketplace

00:22:46Last minute tickets, lowest prices guaranteed.
00:22:52All right, let's talk offensive line because the deadline from Gerard Mayo set is now apparently,
00:22:58right?
00:22:58Remember earlier this off season, he said they will hope to have their starting five
00:23:03up front after the second preseason game.
00:23:07Kind of, I don't know if we're at five.
00:23:09Elliot Wolf was on the broadcast last night and said, we're kind of still working through
00:23:15that.
00:23:15So we'll see.
00:23:16That's something else that's going to be big at practice tomorrow.
00:23:19But I would be surprised if they go away from the Vidarian low city.
00:23:22So David Andrews, Mike Unwin, new troops, a core four lineup that they had out there
00:23:25again, uh, last night for good amount of time, honestly, you know, David Andrews came out
00:23:32early, but you know, uh, Vidarian loan city.
00:23:34So played a while troops core four got some good run.
00:23:37Uh, and then, you know, the nickel of red and the backups came in, but that starting
00:23:41unit, uh, what'd you, what'd you think of them?
00:23:44Uh, PFF seemed to like them and I know PFF can be shaky, but they only have them, uh,
00:23:51giving up total pressures, uh, totals.
00:23:54But what, what'd you think of that starting lineup, uh, last night?
00:23:57I thought most of it was good.
00:23:58Troops core four got beat once on a run.
00:24:00But besides that, you know, I thought he had a good game.
00:24:04So when, when, who had a good game, I just, I don't know what more we need to see from
00:24:12Vidarian low at this point.
00:24:14You know, he got beat again, got beat clean a couple of times.
00:24:18I, they got to try something else.
00:24:20And I, we talked about some of the last show and you just said, I, it may not be until
00:24:23after week one, but I got Cain walls, but he wasn't spectacular, but he was fine.
00:24:29Just like with Drake May, like he deserves a longer look.
00:24:32He deserves a look with the ones.
00:24:33I think at this point, that's, that's worth a shot.
00:24:37Yep.
00:24:38I will say I thought watching it back low was like fine, which like he gave up the sack.
00:24:46It was a long play though.
00:24:48Obviously the chip was weird, but I thought he was fine, but still, I would like to see,
00:24:53I agree with you.
00:24:53Like, I think he's best as a number three tackle.
00:24:57Who's a spot starter and doesn't have to start at left tackle every week.
00:25:01Like I would still like to see Caden Wallace rep with that top unit.
00:25:05Just like Drake may, as you said, like, let him get in there and see how it looks.
00:25:09So I thought it was fine.
00:25:12It wasn't ideal.
00:25:13He had the false start too.
00:25:14And they're the only, only penalty of the day, but yeah, I would still like to see how
00:25:18that looks with Caden y'all Caden Wallace, get the young guys in there and see how they
00:25:24look.
00:25:24But Leighton Robinson was also pretty impressive again.
00:25:28So at some point.
00:25:31Mike, when he was going to get kicked back out now, maybe we're talking like week six,
00:25:35seven, like last year, but do you think he could put the pressure on him?
00:25:40On the coaches with the way low is playing to maybe kick chooks back over and bump big
00:25:45Mike outside.
00:25:46Even though I know we all think Michael Wenu is best at guard, but he's a good tackle and
00:25:51you might need a good tackle.
00:25:53If, if Leighton Robinson can give you a good guard play right now as well.
00:25:56Well, it depends what they think of troops of core for it.
00:26:00Left tackle.
00:26:00I wouldn't force the issue at left tackle to get late Robinson in the lineup, but if
00:26:06they think, let me put it this way.
00:26:08I'd rather who's the better left tackle Caden Wallace or choose core for answer that question
00:26:14first.
00:26:16If, if you're going to get better play at left tackle and it means late, it means late
00:26:20Robinson stays on the bench.
00:26:21I think you keep Leighton Robinson on the bench, unless you're just going to bench
00:26:24chooks core for it.
00:26:26Put Mike at white at right and laid in at right guard, but I think you got to prioritize
00:26:31left tackle, do its best for that position first and then go from there.
00:26:37Yeah.
00:26:38Yeah, I agree.
00:26:39And that's why I would love to see Caden Wallace at left tackle with that.
00:26:43Right.
00:26:43Right.
00:26:44Group, which is why that's frustrating.
00:26:46But yeah, I would, I would still be surprised if that changed though, because they've ran
00:26:52this five with the Darien low at the left side for like plus over two weeks now.
00:26:57So I would be surprised if we get a change there.
00:27:00But again, we'll something we'll look, look out for at practice tomorrow, but the fall
00:27:07off as dry mail said, it's dramatic fall off between the first unit and the second and
00:27:12third unit.
00:27:14Those backup units were rough outside.
00:27:17We had that like semi backup unit where it was like the Darien low city.
00:27:20So Nick Leverett, Lane Robinson and Caden Wallace, that one was fine.
00:27:26But then that third unit is rough.
00:27:28And we've talked a lot about how the depth on the offensive line is just as big as a
00:27:32question as the starters.
00:27:34I mean, they can't snap the ball, right?
00:27:36Like they don't have a reliable center really behind David Andrews.
00:27:39Nick Leverett's been fine, but even he had the low snap with Drake may.
00:27:42And then, you know, Liam for Nadal is snapping and he dirts one, the Bailey's happy that
00:27:47ends the game.
00:27:48I still don't know why we just can't have Charles Turner back there, like the actual
00:27:52center who played center at LSU for 25 games.
00:27:56Like, I guess we're too good for that.
00:27:57But yeah, Gerard Mayo, like his comments after the game were kind of like made you go, whoa,
00:28:04like that.
00:28:04He said there's such a dramatic drop off between the first unit and the backup pairs.
00:28:10Yeah, I mean, it's clear we've seen that.
00:28:12And I've said this as much as we talk about the issues with starters, there's no depth
00:28:15in that unit either.
00:28:16They just have a lot they need to work on, and that's not going to necessarily change
00:28:21this year.
00:28:22We'll see what they do during roster cuts if they add some players that maybe help them
00:28:25on the margins in terms of depth.
00:28:26But it's more than just who's the starting left tackle.
00:28:32So do you think part of his answer?
00:28:34I was just trying to pull it up.
00:28:35He made it sound like it was a lot of mental beyond physical.
00:28:38Do you think that might be a reason?
00:28:39We're not seeing Caden Wallace at left tackle right now.
00:28:42I would imagine behind doors.
00:28:45It's more of the mental stuff.
00:28:47And I said this the other day.
00:28:48People ask why he's not getting more run when Leighton Robinson is not getting more run.
00:28:52I think that's just rookie.
00:28:55They're hesitant with where the rookies are at right now.
00:28:58Yep.
00:28:58So his exact quote was, I would say there's a dramatic drop off, not really physically,
00:29:03but just knowing what to do between the first line and the second and third guys.
00:29:07So maybe that has some of the reason you're not seeing Caden Wallace at left tackle for,
00:29:13excuse me, like a veteran like the Darien Lowe.
00:29:15So I don't know anyone stand out elsewhere on the offensive line or anything else on
00:29:21that offensive line from last night.
00:29:25I think that's pretty much it.
00:29:28Yeah, it's the left tackle and the bad snaps or the big snaps are just killing me.
00:29:34I think we get offensive coaches this week, assistant coaches sometime this week.
00:29:38So maybe we can finally ask Scott Peters or someone like, why won't Charles Turner just
00:29:43snap the ball?
00:29:44Because that's it's crazy how many plays in practice and in games, they're losing the
00:29:49game on a bad snap.
00:29:51Like you saw someone, David Andrews meme, he had the same facial impression on the sideline
00:29:57all night.
00:29:58It's been a mess at that backup center spot.
00:30:00So hopefully they can figure something out there.
00:30:03But wide receivers.
00:30:06Let's start with the rookies.
00:30:07Kind of a tail two nights for Jalen Polk and Javon Baker.
00:30:12We could start positively, I guess, with Jalen Polk, like only two catches for six yards,
00:30:19but showed some wiggle.
00:30:20I thought he ran some better routes.
00:30:22He got open on one of the deep ones.
00:30:24It looked like he had a step that Jacoby kind of missed him.
00:30:29I was going to say something else too, but I just lost it on Jalen Polk.
00:30:32I think you like what you saw from him.
00:30:34He had that catch in the flat and he was able to pick up a few yards.
00:30:37He also beat his guy deep and would have had a deep touchdown.
00:30:41Chikori Versett didn't overthrow him.
00:30:42So multifaceted game for him.
00:30:44I thought he was maybe their most encouraging receiver last night.
00:30:48Yep.
00:30:49He and just speaking of rookies getting first team reps, he should be out there as well.
00:30:54Like, and he seems the closest as anybody he's been getting on the field.
00:30:58First of all, that's true.
00:30:59He got on the field.
00:31:00I think he was out there with Versett for a series last night.
00:31:04So he seems like he's working his way into that.
00:31:06But yeah, they opened with like the Osborne.
00:31:09And then it was Rager or Taekwon.
00:31:11And then pop would come on for 11 personnel.
00:31:13Like I would rather see Jalen Polk in there over like a KJ Osborne
00:31:19or one of the other two in that starting group.
00:31:21He should have the most snaps at receiver.
00:31:23If it was up to me by the end of the year, I would love to see that just play him a ton.
00:31:27And I think he deserves it.
00:31:30And I think he could keep up with that.
00:31:33But on the other end of the spectrum, it was Javon Baker.
00:31:36Not a great night.
00:31:37He obviously had the drop on the beautiful pass from Drake May down the field.
00:31:42Earlier in the game, he got kind of bullied along the boundary against press.
00:31:46And he ran out of bounds and couldn't bring in another pass from Drake May.
00:31:50So he did draw a pass interference later.
00:31:53But you're kind of seeing the hit and miss of Javon Baker.
00:31:58That's part of his game.
00:31:59And lately, it's been more of the miss, especially last night.
00:32:04Yeah, that was a tough one for him because he is going to be this boomer boss player.
00:32:11And his value is in spectacular catches and deep balls.
00:32:16And the one he like that, it's a bit of a dive.
00:32:19It's a bit out in front, but he's got to catch that.
00:32:22That's kind of his play that the deep one from Drake May.
00:32:25He also had going up the sideline.
00:32:27Drake May gave him a throw.
00:32:28It wasn't perfect, but he certainly gave him a chance to make a play on it.
00:32:31But he allowed Keely Ringo to run him out of bounds on the route.
00:32:34So he now can't make a play on the ball because it's a penalty.
00:32:38If he does, he, it's just attention to detail.
00:32:41He's got to be better there.
00:32:42He's never going to be a week in week out guy.
00:32:45He's going to be like Gabe Davis.
00:32:46Like if he works out, he'll be like Gabe Davis where, you know, four or five games a year.
00:32:50He looks like a top 10 receiver in football.
00:32:52And then you don't see him again for the other, whatever it is, 12 or 13 games.
00:32:56So he's got to make the most of the opportunities when they come because they're going to be a
00:32:59little more few and far between than for other receivers.
00:33:02Two opportunities last night.
00:33:03He had let slip.
00:33:04That's not great for him.
00:33:06I wonder if like this would be a off season thing next year, but I wonder if they would
00:33:11like him to bulk up a little, like add five to 10 pounds because yeah, I, me and Taylor
00:33:17have talked about this a lot.
00:33:18He's a lot smaller than I envisioned him when he got here.
00:33:21And, you know, Taylor said after watching him get bullied along the boundary last night,
00:33:26which, you know, he's had troubles in the past, even against press, like Taylor was
00:33:31saying, okay, maybe he has to be like more of a Z receiver than a pure X receiver.
00:33:35So I wonder if that's something where.
00:33:38Again, you can't add 10 pounds right now, but next off season, if they try to bulk him
00:33:42up a little bit so he can kind of last more on the boundary, but yeah, he is a hit or
00:33:47miss guy, boom or bust.
00:33:48So you hope it's as he keeps going, you know, you get more of those booms and it's 50, 50,
00:33:55but yeah, it was mostly misses for him last night, I would say, but yeah.
00:34:01Any other receivers stand out?
00:34:02I mean, Keishon booty had, you know, the nice one handed catch.
00:34:05He had the late one from Zappy.
00:34:07He seems to be making some momentum.
00:34:09I think Gerard Mayo even said last night, like he's been playing well.
00:34:14Um, so anything from him or anything else in that receiver room that caught your eye?
00:34:19Uh, yeah, I, I think he's continued to build momentum.
00:34:22I don't know.
00:34:22Did I miss anything or was Ty Kwon Thornton kind of a no-show last night?
00:34:27Yeah, I, let me check his snap count.
00:34:29He's, I don't think he played a ton, but even when he played, I didn't notice a ton of them.
00:34:34Yeah, I just, he played a, he played nine snaps.
00:34:39So we really, since he suffered that injury, he's kind of just been out of the picture
00:34:44and that's exactly what we all feared.
00:34:46I'm on the outside looking in right now.
00:34:48I do.
00:34:49I just don't think you've seen enough from him.
00:34:51He had the one nice go ball that Jacoby under through last week.
00:34:55Right.
00:34:56But yeah, he, he hasn't been doing much since the injury he's been, he was,
00:35:00was he limited in the joint practice still?
00:35:04He might've been, he definitely wasn't fully limited.
00:35:06Cause he, I think he did a couple snaps in team, but yeah, I don't, I think,
00:35:09I don't think he was a hundred percent.
00:35:12Uh, yeah, he didn't finish with a catch last night either.
00:35:14So quiet night and nine snaps for Ty Kwon.
00:35:17Uh, we saw a little pop too much of pop from my liking.
00:35:21We didn't need him returning.
00:35:22Yeah, seriously in the preseason, but I don't need to see him again.
00:35:25And like, he doesn't need to play in Washington.
00:35:27I'm good.
00:35:28Yeah.
00:35:28So good to see, like he's healthy and he's out there, but like, okay, we'll see pop Douglas
00:35:34week one.
00:35:35Um, and I think that was pretty much it for, for that wide receiver room.
00:35:39So, or, or we could say tight ends, uh, no Hunter Henry,
00:35:44Austin Hooper was the target on the, uh, interception.
00:35:49Didn't play much after that, but still did you have TBD for your third tight end spot?
00:35:54Because like, they're not getting much out of any of those guys.
00:35:58It was quiet for Mitchell Wilcox.
00:36:01Jaheim bell had a few rough snaps that were going around Twitter and the run game.
00:36:05And he hasn't made much of an impact as a pass catcher.
00:36:08So that third tight end spot still really looks wide open right now.
00:36:12Yeah.
00:36:12I, I, I still think that's an external addition.
00:36:16Yeah.
00:36:16Just nothing.
00:36:17Wilcox bell Petto had bad drop last night, I think.
00:36:21Right.
00:36:21Um, nobody's really done much to, to grow that job yet.
00:36:25He did something that I looked at it.
00:36:27It was a drop or maybe missed a block or said it's in my notes somewhere,
00:36:31but he, he did something that I looked at and I was like, ah, that's, that's not.
00:36:36Yeah.
00:36:36That's a tough spot for you.
00:36:37Yep.
00:36:38Uh, one more thing on the receiver side, just remind me, just going back
00:36:41sucks to see Jaquay Jackson get hurt the way he did.
00:36:43And I know Gerard Mayo said he had negative x-rays.
00:36:45Look, I don't think Jaquay Jackson was going to make this team,
00:36:48but he was certain he was having a good summer.
00:36:50He was certainly positioning himself for a practice squad spot if not here elsewhere.
00:36:54Maybe he, he gets on the backend of the 53 elsewhere.
00:36:57So hope he's okay.
00:36:58Hopefully it's nothing long-term.
00:37:00Um, but yeah, it sucked.
00:37:01Cause he was, he was having a decent summer.
00:37:04Yep.
00:37:05Definitely.
00:37:06Definitely.
00:37:06Seemed like a, seemed like you'd be a great like practice squad.
00:37:09Yeah.
00:37:10Receiver.
00:37:11He was running some smooth routes out there.
00:37:12He was building some momentum.
00:37:14So you hate to see that you hope he's all right.
00:37:16But, um, just very quick wrap up on the offense with the running backs.
00:37:22Um, and, and kind of offensive line.
00:37:24Like the, I think the biggest concern with the offensive line last night is they
00:37:28weren't gaining much room on the ground.
00:37:30Like it was kind of a, a struggle to run the ball.
00:37:33Um, you know, Mandre Gibson, Kevin Harris was still RB three.
00:37:38Michael hasty showed some good bursts.
00:37:40I don't, I don't know if they're going to keep four and if that would be Michael hasty,
00:37:43but you know, he had that nice screen pass, but, um, anything from the run game as a whole
00:37:48and those backs on the roster there.
00:37:50Hasty did look good.
00:37:51I think he's a guy that still ends up on the practice squad and maybe comes up later, but
00:37:54he had a good game.
00:37:55He had a good game on special teams as well.
00:37:58He's the one that stood out to me.
00:37:59I mean, Gibson Stevenson were fine.
00:38:01Didn't see as much Kevin Harris last night as we've seen in other games, which to me
00:38:05is a good sign for him that they're, you know, they're happy with where he's at.
00:38:10Uh, it'll be interesting to see if hasty can make a roster push though.
00:38:13He's definitely on the bubble there.
00:38:15Yep.
00:38:15Definitely.
00:38:16And our guy Terrell Jennings didn't even get a, didn't, didn't even get a carry.
00:38:20Unfortunately.
00:38:21So he was in there.
00:38:22I think he got a target, right?
00:38:23They threw one to him.
00:38:24He got a catch.
00:38:24He got a 12 yard patch, but he didn't get any rush attempts.
00:38:29I think they were throwing the ball last night.
00:38:30I think they wanted to test the line.
00:38:32They wanted to test the quarterbacks.
00:38:33They came out throwing.
00:38:34Definitely.
00:38:35Yeah.
00:38:35Cause Kevin Harris got three rushes and hasty got two.
00:38:42And then it was may with four Milton with three Mondra got six Gibson got four.
00:38:48So after Mondra and Gibson went out, they really were throwing the ball around a lot.
00:38:53So, um, yeah, it still looks like Kevin Harris in that RB three role.
00:38:57He had the best run of the night too.
00:38:59I think it was like a 13, 14 yard or I believe it was one of their bed.
00:39:02I think it was outside zone.
00:39:03One of their better outside zone reps of the night as well there.
00:39:06So he still looks like RB three, but we'll see if maybe Michael hasty can make a push
00:39:11there as well.
00:39:11So, um, any wrap up on the offense?
00:39:16I think that pretty much covers it.
00:39:17That covers it.
00:39:18All right.
00:39:19We'll take one last quick break here from our friends over at factor meals.
00:39:23And then we will wrap this up with a little defensive thoughts and special team
00:39:28thoughts as well from last night.
00:39:30I have to talk to you guys about a new sponsor and training camp is upon us.
00:39:35And sometimes Barth and I, especially Barth doing four shows, we don't have much time

00:39:43is why factors, no prep, no mess meals is the way to go.

00:40:43All right.
00:40:44To the defense first game post Matthew Jude on trade and pass rush was swarming yet again.
00:40:51And I know it's mostly against the Eagles backups, but it was a good, good day for the
00:40:57Patriots pass rush.
00:40:59Key on white and Joshua Uche led the way with four pressures each.
00:41:03I think they both had a sack as well.
00:41:04So those are the two guys that we were really talking about.
00:41:07Like these guys have to step up post Jude on.
00:41:10And then you saw, you know, O'Shea's the minutes get in there.
00:41:12Dietrich wise, get involved, all get in sack.
00:41:15So encouraging again, it's preseason, but encouraging kind of first game there.
00:41:21Post Jude on, especially with key on white and Joshua Uche.
00:41:25Yeah.
00:41:25Look, it's, it's so hard to judge just because the Eagles, I mean, it was their backup, really
00:41:30their third string offensive line, but that's what you want to see from a good defense against
00:41:34a backup line.
00:41:35You want to see them dominate essentially what the Eagles starters did to the Patriots
00:41:40and joint practices.
00:41:41So you want to see them take over.
00:41:43They took over.
00:41:44They lived in the backfield.
00:41:45I still don't know why Josh Uche played so late.
00:41:47Mayo said today it wasn't because of the training camp fight.
00:41:50He asked to make the team.
00:41:51I mean, he's their best pure.
00:41:53You know, he was limited early in the summer.
00:41:56Yeah.
00:41:56I wonder if they're just trying to get them, get them some reps almost like, like Rayquan
00:42:00McMillan, who we'll talk about.
00:42:02Like he played deep into the game and probably not because he's on the bubble, but he hasn't
00:42:06played in two years.
00:42:07So maybe get them reps.
00:42:08Maybe that was something.
00:42:10No, I think that's a good point.
00:42:10But I mean, you had to like what you saw.
00:42:13I don't think that's necessarily a perfect reflection of what they're going to be this
00:42:17year just because of the competition.
00:42:19But I don't think it's a bad thing either.
00:42:21Yep.
00:42:23So yeah, those were the edge guys, uh, D tackle anyone, you know, Jeremiah farms still
00:42:30kind of led the way we saw a lot of Mike personal.
00:42:33You talked about Armand Watts playing, you know, not getting into the game late.
00:42:37Uh, Danny equality looked, looked good.
00:42:39Like he had some bursts as a pass rusher, Tristan Hill.
00:42:42I think he got hurt.
00:42:43Doug Kide said that after the game.
00:42:45So that'll be something to monitor.
00:42:46But anyone from those, uh, kind of interior guys, Devon, gosh, I didn't play, but any
00:42:52of those interior guys kind of make a push in your eyes.
00:42:56I mean, I thought farms had another good game last night.
00:42:59I think the bigger story is Watts not playing until late in that game.
00:43:02And it seems like somebody that's on the outside looking in.
00:43:05He was one of their first free agency signs, but they didn't give him a ton of money.
00:43:09Even without Barmore.
00:43:10I mean, it feels like they could maybe get by without him.
00:43:12They have good depth for that role.
00:43:15He, I left him off the roster and I think you can leave them off the roster and still
00:43:18put together a competitive roster with farms and Hill, both emerging.
00:43:23They're, they're kind of set in, in, in defensive tackle.
00:43:27They're in a good place there.
00:43:28I know he plays them on the edge too, but you still have Dietrich wise.
00:43:31Oh, Shane's and men is, has showed up.
00:43:33They just, it's white can bump it on white.
00:43:36It's been a position where a lot of guys have exceeded expectations.
00:43:40And I think he's just gotten passed by too many players.
00:43:43Yep.
00:43:43So we'll see how that arm on Watts saga kind of shakes out there.
00:43:48If he can make a push over these last week, week and a half here, but yeah, a lot of depth
00:43:53there on the defensive line.
00:43:55These guys aren't going to be Christian bar more, but maybe you can try to replace him
00:43:58as best as possible by committee.
00:44:00And you're getting some encouraging signs there with guys like Jeremiah farms, Christian
00:44:04Hill, and those guys behind them.
00:44:05So behind them, we didn't see Juwan Bentley, but you know, not much to buy as expected
00:44:14the starters, but Rayquan McMillan was awesome.
00:44:17Even he was all on the edge a little bit.
00:44:19So maybe that's something they try to tinker with.
00:44:21And he was very physical along the edge as well.
00:44:25And Joe Giles Harris was another guy who continues to make a player to every day.
00:44:30It's one, one really good coverage rep against a tight end up the seam.
00:44:34But he's, he just appears to flash every now and then.
00:44:39He's been good, but I just still don't think it's, it's flashes.
00:44:42It's not consistent enough.
00:44:43He's a guy.
00:44:43I still think practice squad.
00:44:46Maybe he's a candidate for practice squad elevations.
00:44:49Anything from a Rayquan or those other linebackers?
00:44:52Sorry.
00:44:53Yeah.
00:44:53I thought Rayquan was awesome and he was a force in the run game.
00:44:57He was attacking downhill.
00:44:58He delivered some big hits.
00:44:59He's been really good on special teams as well.
00:45:01He's going to make this team.
00:45:02He's going to play a role and how big that role is.
00:45:04I don't know.
00:45:04I don't think they want to give him too big of a role because it was injury history, but
00:45:08a reminder.
00:45:09And I've been a big fan of his, you know, going back to before they signed him, but
00:45:13he's like a legitimate NFL contributing rotational player.
00:45:17He's a good player to have.
00:45:19He just, he can never stay healthy.
00:45:21And that's why he is kind of has the standing he does.
00:45:25But if he's healthy, yeah, he's on the team and he's playing and he's going to help me out.
00:45:30So a good reminder last night of what he can do when he's fully healthy.
00:45:34And everyone praises him for his leadership off the field, right?
00:45:38His locker, like he was around the team basically as a coach last year while he was hurt.
00:45:42Like the locker room really loves him.
00:45:45So if he's giving you that level of play as well, that's a, that's a nice, uh, he's going
00:45:50to be on the team.
00:45:50He's going to be on the team, but right on your roster projection, do you have Christian
00:45:54Ellis on or off?
00:45:56I didn't, he's still just off to me.
00:45:58Okay.
00:45:59Cause I was thinking if they're using, you know, McMillan and maybe Tavai gets more of
00:46:04along the edge, you know, Christian Ellis has made kind of a push here as more of an
00:46:08all like a depth off ball linebacker, but you still had them off there.
00:46:12Yeah.
00:46:13I think they can get them on the practice squad and bring them back later.
00:46:16I also think that him and McMillan, I don't know.
00:46:19I thought him and McMillan, there's kind of overlap.
00:46:20Do you need both those guys?
00:46:22If talkie talkie is ready, you know, right.
00:46:25You let you lay out a scenario where maybe they could both be on the field at the same
00:46:29time.
00:46:29I just thought there was, there was a little too much overlap there, but you're right.
00:46:31Like if, if, um, if talkie talkie is still not ready, maybe he, he grabs one of the last
00:46:38roster spots.
00:46:39Yep.
00:46:39So he's another guy to kind of watch their depth bottom of that roster, but roster bubble.
00:46:43So, um, secondary kind of a rough one for Marcellus dial, which it's going to happen,
00:46:52but they were really picking on him.
00:46:55Uh, who was that guy?
00:46:56Like Joseph nada or something on, on Philly was just a couple of deep completions on them.
00:47:02And then, you know, one to set up the go ahead, touchdown, and then dial was in coverage on
00:47:07the go ahead, two point conversion.
00:47:09So kind of a rough one for Marcellus dial, uh, as you know, those depth corners are still
00:47:16kind of fighting it out for roster spots at this point.
00:47:19Yeah.
00:47:20And I still think dials on the team, you got to go by the whole body of work, not just
00:47:24last night, but yeah, he probably has to sweat it out now.
00:47:28Like he, he didn't do himself any favors.
00:47:30He he's right there on the bubble and he's going to need to come back with a strong week
00:47:32this week and, and not let that tumble.
00:47:35But yeah, he had a, he had a rough game last night.
00:47:38Meanwhile, you still see Alex Austin out there making plays.
00:47:41Marco Wilson continues to look good.
00:47:43Like those guys are on to me, it's, it's dial and wait for that last spot.
00:47:47Even if there is a last spot, I think that's the seventh cornerback spot.
00:47:50Yeah.
00:47:50Um, it's, it's those two for maybe the last spot, but not, not a great one for any, he
00:47:58wasn't, uh, he had some trouble in joint practices too.
00:48:00So it's been tough for, for Marcellus dial.
00:48:03Yeah.
00:48:04Alex Austin.
00:48:05I mean, we've talked a lot this summer, how he's kind of come back maybe a little bit
00:48:10in practice, but like, I thought the first preseason game, he was maybe their best corner
00:48:16and then watching live last night, he seemed to make a few splash plays.
00:48:20So he's been trending in the better, uh, right direction and game action, which is good to
00:48:25see.
00:48:25But, um, yeah, he's still, you know, Marco Wilson's involved.
00:48:29Isaiah Bolden got the start in the slot with Sean Wade and Marcus Jones out.
00:48:33Um, I thought he looked good.
00:48:34You know, you saw his kind of closing speed on one of those sacks.
00:48:38Um, Gerard Mayo did say Marcus Jones and Jonathan Jones are close to returning.
00:48:42So we'll see how that secondary kind of shakes out when those two are in there.
00:48:45But did you say you kept seven on your roster projection?
00:48:49Yeah, I had seven.
00:48:50I still had dial on, but he, I had him on the, on the bubble.
00:48:53I had him right on the fringe.
00:48:54Okay.
00:48:55And then so Wade, Wade cut Bolden on in the slot.
00:49:00Yes.
00:49:01Okay.
00:49:01So seven corners, a lot of corners, but it's a deep competitive room.
00:49:05So, uh, definitely a possibility there.
00:49:09Uh, and Josh ask here, any, any thoughts on Gonzalez?
00:49:14Uh, I, again, he, he gave up some catches last night.
00:49:17It's, it's just going to come down to, to me is, is he a gamer because he wasn't perfect
00:49:23in camp last year either.
00:49:26And then obviously he had the start that he did.
00:49:27So I just, I, I think we're splitting hairs at this point with him, with these practice
00:49:32reps, like it's clear he hasn't had a good camp.
00:49:34That's the reality, but you saw enough last year in games that you're not going to write
00:49:38him off.
00:49:39At this point, we just got to see it.
00:49:41We just got to see it in a regular season game.
00:49:43I don't want to say I'm not worried, but his camp hasn't been what we expected it to be
00:49:48fine.
00:49:49If it, if he shows up in the games, it doesn't matter.
00:49:52If not.
00:49:53Yeah.
00:49:53We saw it coming.
00:49:54I don't think anything's changing between now and the start of the season with him.
00:49:59Yeah.
00:49:59Yeah.
00:50:00I'm not going to worry about it until it happens in the regular season, if it happens in the
00:50:05regular season.
00:50:05So we'll get back to you on, on that one.
00:50:08So, uh, not much in the safety room, although Josh Bledsoe came back, you know, he was hurt
00:50:14and they used him as kind of like a blitzer.
00:50:17I think he blitzed twice and he had two pressures.
00:50:20So he did.
00:50:20I put him on the roster.
00:50:22He had a really good, well-rounded game, like manufacturing, maybe some more pressure without
00:50:26Matthew Judon and Christian Barmore.
00:50:28Like maybe that's the guy.
00:50:29And you saw Joshua Bledsoe get a little bit more involved in that aspect.
00:50:32So, um, you had him on your, on your roster.
00:50:35Was he the fifth safety counting Brendan schooler?
00:50:39Yeah.
00:50:39And I kept Dell Pettis too.
00:50:41So yeah.
00:50:41Pettis.
00:50:42Okay.
00:50:42Yep.
00:50:43So crowded safety room there, but yeah.
00:50:46Crowded defense.
00:50:46Really?
00:50:47I went thin at tight end, which is three.
00:50:49They didn't running back, which is three, nine offensive linemen, and then just loaded
00:50:53up on defense and four quarterbacks.
00:50:55So in four quarterbacks, you're right.
00:50:57Interesting.
00:50:58All right.
00:51:00Nothing else.
00:51:00Defense.
00:51:01I think that's most of it.
00:51:02Uh, quote, let's do real quick on Dell Pettis credit to him.
00:51:05I thought he was having a quiet game and then he makes that great play.
00:51:08I, the Eagles ended up scoring, but it makes that great play.
00:51:10He was given up five inches and 50 pounds on whoever that tight end was and box them
00:51:15out at the one.
00:51:16That's an awesome play.
00:51:17And just doesn't, you know, just credit for, for that.
00:51:20That was a, that was a good play by him.
00:51:22You've seen that physicality a lot since the pads came on.
00:51:26Uh, yeah.
00:51:27Credit to him for that one, but, uh, let's go to special teams.
00:51:32Joey Sly looks like the guy right now.
00:51:35He got, they're still rotating field goals, but Sly has been first up.
00:51:40And then it's worked out that he has gotten all the field goal attempts while Chad Ryland
00:51:44gets all the, um, extra point attempts.
00:51:47So Sly got two field goals, 51 yards and 45 yards last night, made them both.
00:51:52Ryland got the one extra point, uh, and, and made that, but Joey Sly, I don't have, I don't
00:51:59know if you have the summer updated tally in front of you, but that's probably still
00:52:04close.
00:52:04But when you break it down, I compared it to like the college resume the other day,
00:52:08like Joey Sly's resume is a lot better.
00:52:11He's got two games now of, you know, perfect on field goals, including mostly from deep.
00:52:18And then even in practice, he's making, you know, the hurry up the live two minute situation
00:52:21drills.
00:52:22So I think right now it's pretty clear advantage for Joey Sly and that kicking battle.
00:52:28So Sly is one less make on one more attempt.
00:52:33So I have Sly 28 to 35 Ryland, 29 to 34, Brian.
00:52:37I don't know if you have the same numbers.
00:52:38Um, but the difference to me, Sly's five for five from 50 plus Ryland's one of three.
00:52:46They're comparable in the 40 to 49 yard range, 10 of 12 for Sly, 10 of 11 for Ryland.
00:52:51He's been better and he's going to give you more range.
00:52:54That's your guy.
00:52:54I, and not even like he's better right now.
00:52:57I know Mayo said this morning that it, it's still a competition.
00:53:00I guess it's still technically is, but I just think what would need to happen in the amount
00:53:04of time that's left for Ryland to catch up to Joey Sly.
00:53:08I'm ready to declare a winner.
00:53:10I think Joey Sly's are weak.
00:53:12I'm calling it.
00:53:12I'm calling it.
00:53:13I just, he's locked in right now.
00:53:16It would, I don't think Ryland can catch him.
00:53:18I think Sly would also have to come back to him and, and Sly's just in a rhythm right
00:53:22now he's locked in.
00:53:23And I don't think he's going to like have like a nuclear meltdown or anything.
00:53:27And then these last practices, does he stick through the season?
00:53:29Does he stay this hot through the season?
00:53:30I don't know, but I think he's won the job.
00:53:34Yep.
00:53:35I do think it's a shame that we're gonna, looks like we might have another preseason
00:53:39where Chad Ryland doesn't get one field goal attempt in the preseason.
00:53:43And I guess like Joey Sly has earned the right to go first.
00:53:47And now they're like strictly rotating and then it just worked out like that.
00:53:50But it is kind of a shame that, you know, a second straight year here, Ryland can't
00:53:55get even a field goal attempt and preseason action.
00:53:58Well, here's what was telling for me, Brian, when they did their walkthrough before the
00:54:02game.
00:54:02And usually when they do their walkthrough before the game, they kick a, they kick one
00:54:07field goal at the end.
00:54:08It's the last play of the walkthrough and they did one field goal yesterday.
00:54:13Joey Sly.
00:54:14It was Joey Sly.
00:54:15He's currently the starting kicker.
00:54:17And he, he, through the practices, he earned the right to be the starting kicker going
00:54:22into the games.
00:54:22And he's done nothing to let go of that.
00:54:24I, I, he legitimately won the job.
00:54:27I know some people are annoyed.
00:54:28They're not giving Chad rather than more chances.
00:54:30My question would be, did he earn more chances?
00:54:32I don't think he did.
00:54:35Yeah, we, we almost had the, uh, Christmas Eve repeat in Denver with the Bailey's happy
00:54:40two minute drive in the Chad Ryland field.
00:54:42It would have been interesting if that happened.
00:54:44Although if he missed it, then it would have been over.
00:54:46It would have been over, over, but if he made it now, now we're really talking here, but.
00:54:51Um, yeah, we have, you know, we have six practices and then the last preseason game.
00:54:57I don't know if something drastic could change.
00:54:58Maybe Ryland gets some attempts in that last game, but do you think if they keep slide,
00:55:06do you think Ryland maybe falls in the practice squad candidate range?
00:55:10If he would want to stick around here, first of all, but.
00:55:13I think it's possible.
00:55:14Certainly.
00:55:15I don't, if he wants to stick around, it's the big one, but you keep him and you kind
00:55:18of keep the, the competition going a little bit into the season.
00:55:23You know, I flirted with the idea on the Ross projection of keeping two kickers and saying,
00:55:26just keep this competition going into the year.
00:55:28Like you're going to have to do a tackle.
00:55:30No, we're not really doing two kicker.
00:55:31It made sense last year.
00:55:32It doesn't make sense this year, but keeping Chad Ryland on the practice squad.
00:55:35I don't think it's going to be a market form around the league.
00:55:38So yeah.
00:55:40Yeah.
00:55:41Yeah.
00:55:42I think that would be worthwhile because these kickers can be so volatile, right?
00:55:47You just never know.
00:55:48Keep the pressure on, keep the pressure on these guys and, um, keep a young guy around.
00:55:53So see what, see what something happens there.
00:55:55So yeah, sly is the guy right now.
00:55:58So, uh, just elsewhere quickly on special teams.
00:56:02I mean, I mentioned it on the top, the Bryce Behringer punt was awesome.
00:56:05Yeah.
00:56:05Complete coffin corner.
00:56:07That was awesome.
00:56:07And then, uh, some good returns still Jalen Rager had a 15 yard punt return and then like
00:56:14a 30 yard kick return.
00:56:15And then David Wallace really broke one 52, 53 yard kick return.
00:56:19He's flashed.
00:56:20He did muff a punt, which has been kind of consistent throughout the summer.
00:56:25Like he's had some issues handling them.
00:56:27And it's not just that he muffed it.
00:56:28He then instead of falling on the ball, I tried to pick it up and run with it, but it took him
00:56:33like three or four tries to pick it up.
00:56:34And eventually he fell on it because the Eagles were closing in.
00:56:37Uh, it's still practice squad player to me.
00:56:38Yeah.
00:56:39I just, that wasn't that, that was a, a pretty bad fire drill trying to handle that muffed
00:56:45punt.
00:56:45Yeah.
00:56:46And he didn't do it in college, so it's somewhat new to him.
00:56:51So maybe he'll, he'll learn, right?
00:56:53Like we heard pop Douglas last year say, like, he didn't know how to catch a punt until he
00:56:58worked with Troy Brown at like the shrine bowl.
00:57:00So maybe you get him on the practice squad because once the ball, if he gets the ball
00:57:05in his hands, he he's proved he can make something happen here.
00:57:08So, uh, maybe that's, uh, something you keep them on the practice squad for and see if
00:57:13you have something there as a returner down the line.
00:57:15So, uh, but he's looked good and, and Jalen Ragers look good.
00:57:18He does give me, I have a comp for you though.
00:57:20He gives me some, yeah, for David Wallace, there, there's some Riley McCarron vibes there
00:57:26and I'm not falling for that one again.
00:57:28Okay.
00:57:29That's fair.
00:57:29That's fair.
00:57:30But, um, yeah, I'm not expecting like the next Marcus Jones back there, but I don't
00:57:36know.
00:57:36He's, he's had some good returns here.
00:57:38So, um, and then Jalen Rager, like two big returns as a kick returner and a punt returner,
00:57:44like that's big for him.
00:57:46Cause if he wants to make this, this team, like he's got to contribute in those areas
00:57:50as well.
00:57:50So, um, good to see him do that.
00:57:53But, uh, any other kickoff kick return takeaways there, anything catch your eye now that we're
00:57:59seeing a little bit more of this dynamic kickoff or, yeah, I mean, mainly that Rager
00:58:02return.
00:58:02I thought that was, he, he made a little play there to turn a 25 yard return and with 35
00:58:07yard return.
00:58:07I think that's what gets them on the team.
00:58:09Uh, I don't think we saw much from the Patriots kickoff unit.
00:58:13Not that I remember.
00:58:14I mean, it was all pretty cut and dry there.
00:58:15So, um, yeah, I think that pretty much covers it for special teams.
00:58:20Still pretty vanilla there.
00:58:22Hopefully we get more excitement when the regular season starts and teams start.
00:58:25I think we will.
00:58:27Yeah, hopefully, uh, we did see some touchbacks too.
00:58:30They, which was different cause it seems like they want to kind of return these and see
00:58:35how it looks.
00:58:35But we, we saw some touchbacks come out to the 30 last night.
00:58:38So, um, first time we really saw that, but all right.
00:58:44Anything, any last takeaways we didn't get to, or again, we have three practices coming
00:58:49up now.
00:58:49Anything you're looking forward to, obviously the quarterback reps try to get some of these
00:58:54young guys in.
00:58:55But any other last thoughts here before we wrap this one up?
00:58:58What did you make of how broken up Mayo was after the game about the loss?
00:59:02I think I like that, but I don't know.
00:59:04It was to go from last week where he said, these games don't matter.
00:59:08He said they're, they're important, but they don't matter too.
00:59:11Yeah.
00:59:11That stings first loss as a head coach.
00:59:14And then he goes on and on about, you know, we didn't do the fundamentals well enough
00:59:18in the second half.
00:59:19That's on me.
00:59:19Attention to detail.
00:59:20I just, I, I thought it was interesting.
00:59:22And it was for the spot.
00:59:24This team is in, I, I, I've gone back and forth on how I feel about that.
00:59:28It was when I first heard it, I was like, Oh, that's kind of weird.
00:59:32Right.
00:59:32It's a preseason.
00:59:34And yeah, I just don't like the whole, like, you know, Drake may keeping his first touchdown
00:59:39ball.
00:59:39Like I'm also a hater, but I'm like, it's the preseason.
00:59:41Like, let's keep the first one in the regular season.
00:59:44But right.
00:59:45I mean, I guess when it comes to Mayo, like I'd, I'd rather him care about this a little
00:59:51too much, then be like, Oh, whatever.
00:59:54Like, I don't, I don't care at all.
00:59:55Right.
00:59:55Like, does that make sense?
00:59:56Like, I'd rather him care, I guess, and be a little upset that they lost the game.
01:00:01But yeah, I thought hearing that I was a little like, Oh, that's kind of a weird thing to
01:00:07hear from right now.
01:00:08So but good point.
01:00:10Yeah.
01:00:10That, that, that caught my attention in live time.
01:00:12So all right, we can wrap it up there.
01:00:16Then we'll be back tomorrow.
01:00:20They have a three, three o'clock practice.
01:00:24So it might be a little later at night, depending on it's, it's a shorter practice.
01:00:28I think it's 90 minutes, but it doesn't start till three.
01:00:31So we might, we'll see, honestly, there's, I know we do after every practice, if it's
01:00:35literally just a walkthrough.
01:00:37Yeah, we might just do Sunday and do bowl.
01:00:40Actually, I'm not going to be at practice on Sunday.
01:00:42Cause I'm on the sports hub.
01:00:43So you may have to, it may be Taylor Mike on here on Sunday, but maybe you guys will
01:00:47do both.
