00:00All right, everyone, welcome back into another live edition of the Patriots Beat podcast
00:25here on the CLNS meeting network presented by our wonderful friends over at game time.
00:31It's Brian Hines back as always with Alex Barth, fresh or kind of fresh off the fields
00:36of day seven of Patriots training camp.
00:39They were back after an off day on Wednesday and back on the practice fields, a hot Gillette
00:45Stadium, hot Foxborough, Massachusetts today on Thursday.
00:49But before we get into the practice and what we saw today, there was a little off the fields.
00:55Good there.
00:56Yeah.
00:57All right.
00:58I usually have the show up on my phone while we're going to read the comments and have
01:01the sound turned down.
01:02So that was a little, um, but a little off the field news yesterday on the day off because
01:08one of the contract extensions or one of the extension candidates that we've been talking
01:13about a lot here, Devon Godshaw got his deal.
01:17It was a two year extension worth up to 21 million and they included 16 and a half million
01:22guaranteed.
01:23So that was a big, uh, the guaranteed money was the big thing for him when he talked to
01:26us last week, he said he wanted some guarantee money that the deal he was on didn't have
01:31any guaranteed money.
01:32So we got 16 and a half guaranteed.
01:34Um, we kind of saw this coming right with Drew Rosenhouse at practice earlier this week,
01:39Godshaw's agent.
01:40So this seemed to be in the works and they agree to this.
01:44So good to get him taken care of, get him back.
01:49Like he's been participating, but now he's fully focused on football.
01:53Uh, now it's just down to Matthew Judon, who we can also talk about in a second, but just
01:58your kind of initial or not initial.
02:00We've had over 24 hours here, but your, your, your take on this a two year extension for,
02:05for Godshaw.
02:06Yeah.
02:07So I kind of feel similar as I did about the remandering Stevenson contract.
02:12I mean, there, there's obvious differences there, right?
02:14Different position, different age, all that, and, and different depth behind them.
02:18But what it comes down to, to me in the similarities is, I don't know that I necessarily would
02:23have done this if I was running the team, but it's not a big enough deal that I'm going
02:28to get worked up about it.
02:29Like it's not necessarily a bad thing.
02:32Two more years, 16 total guaranteed.
02:35Who even knows that last year might be a dummy year.
02:38If he ends up being a good player for him, they look brilliant.
02:40If not, they're not handcuffed to anything significant.
02:43Like they can get out of this relatively easily.
02:45There's still room to add another defensive tackle, things like that.
02:48So it feels like a team friendly deal and you know, I'm not going to complain about
02:53that.
02:54So I would have moved on.
02:56I think that there's other ways to get, you know, there's a lot of good defensive tackles
03:00in league right now.
03:01And I also just think the whole Jude on of it, like did this deal relate to the way Jude
03:07on acted out?
03:08Is that worth it?
03:09But the deal itself is it, there's nothing major there.
03:13Yep.
03:14So like the 16 and a half guaranteed, that feels like it's probably going to be stretched
03:18over two years or than the third year.
03:20They could probably get out of that fairly easily, which I think we were kind of in the
03:25same boat for most of the summer and the off season.
03:27We were discussing this like Godshaw may not be a player that we extend for multiple years,
03:32but they obviously opted to do so.
03:34And I think the other part, like with Christian Barmore missing, and I know they're completely
03:39different players, right?
03:40Like Godshaw's the big, you know, he's got a two gap.
03:43He's going to take on bodies in the run game and bar more is more of, you know, the, the
03:47pass rusher, the one-on-one penetrator, they're different styles.
03:52But if you lose both of these guys, or if you have like an uninterested uninvolved Godshaw,
03:58like that hurts.
03:59And I think Gerard Mayo kind of said that this morning, like they keep some level of
04:02stability in the middle there where now you're, you know, you're Devon Godshaw and Christian
04:09Barmore's replacement instead of two replacement level players there in the interior.
04:13So, you know, different style of players, but I think it's good to keep him in the middle
04:18there and you know, now he's happy and he has that guaranteed money.
04:21Yeah.
04:22And, and he's the other thing that doesn't get talked about is his presence in the locker
04:25room, which is important.
04:26And especially if Jude on is going to be either not here would be a problem having a veteran
04:31setting locker room presence matters all the more, but yeah, I mean, they kept a solid
04:35player here for not that much money at the end of the day.
04:39Yeah.
04:40It really, anything to complain about.
04:41Yep.
04:42So they'll still have tons of cap again, like the theme with all of these is they, they
04:46have so much money that it's not going to stop them from going out and hopefully getting
04:50that big wide receiver or offensive tackle, probably not an offensive tackle and free
04:55agency.
04:56There's not many available, especially after, you know, Tristan Werth signed his deal, but
04:59you know, getting that big fish, maybe trade for one none of these are stopping them of
05:04making that move and paying a guy of that caliber.
05:06So let's talk about Jude on, he was back today.
05:11Gerard Mayo said they had a, a good conversation after, you know, they had the episode on Monday
05:18at practice, and then he wasn't at the facility on Tuesday.
05:21He said they had a good conversation, wanted to keep most of it in house of that conversation,
05:26but he was back at practice today.
05:29It wasn't a padded practice, which is important to note, but he was out there pretty much
05:33a full participant.
05:35He did all a positional drills.
05:37He was out there for, for just like a player to each period during the team drills, but
05:41he was out there.
05:43Is that a good sign?
05:44Do you think for the future of Matthew Jude on, I know we've been bumping up and down
05:48these percentages of play a snap.
05:51We were at like 55, 60%, I think after the whole Monday episode, are you maybe a little
05:56backup higher after they had a good conversation and we saw Matt Jude on out there in a non
06:02padded practice again, but, uh, he, he was out there.
06:06I don't know that I'm up, like, it's not a bad sign.
06:08I don't know that it's a good sign because on one hand you can look at it and say, look,
06:12they got him back out there and that's good.
06:14But you also could look at it and say, did they tell him we're going to try to trade
06:19you, but we need you to practice like you help us out in practice so we can actually
06:24get something for you and we'll trade you somewhere that wants to give you an extension.
06:28So in his case, nobody's going to be, you know, super eager to trade for him after what
06:32happened last week.
06:33Does he need to look like he's, you know, under control and has everything in check
06:38so that a team will actually not just trade for him, but give him the extension.
06:41So that could go either way.
06:43Gerard Mayo said they talked, he all said they're moving forward.
06:46He didn't define what moving forward means.
06:48He left that kind of vague.
06:49I think that might've been on purpose.
06:52I'm still at like, I, maybe I was at, I think 50, 55, let's call it 55, 60.
06:57Now from the other day, like I, it seems like the plan is, cause we talked about this.
07:06How do you move forward from that?
07:08I think we agree.
07:09The best path in theory is to have him on the field because he makes them a better team.
07:13But how do you square that with what happened over the last week?
07:16And that includes the issues yesterday where I think he got mad that the team was trying
07:20to make him look bad with the erroneous Diana Rossini report.
07:25The best path is him back on the field, but how do you get there from what happened?
07:29And it seems like the plan might just be forget about it.
07:31Like that didn't happen.
07:32We're not going to talk about it.
07:33We're not going to think about it.
07:34We're just burn the tapes, move on.
07:37And maybe that'll work.
07:38That feels a lot more like a bandaid than anything else.
07:42So does it flare up again when the regular season starts?
07:46Like now what?
07:47Okay.
07:48They told him to, they told me to get back out there.
07:51They told him to essentially behave.
07:54Did that come with the promise of a new contract?
07:56If so, like, is that agreed on?
07:58Because what happens if that was the deal?
08:01And then suddenly they still can't agree on a contract.
08:04Now you're going to have the same issue with twice as bad.
08:08It all still feels very day to day to me.
08:10Yeah.
08:11Yeah, I agree.
08:12I think I'm a little more optimistic.
08:15Just the fact that he was out there.
08:17I think we were talking after the whole Monday thing, like, can you even bring them back
08:20in the building?
08:21Right.
08:22And he wasn't on Tuesday after the whole blow up.
08:24And he was, I thought that he was out there.
08:26That was a little optimistic sign that maybe they're making progress on something there.
08:31But do you think it could change?
08:34I think they're expected to be in pads tomorrow.
08:37I mean, you said day to day, like, could we get out there and he's back to, Oh, if I don't
08:42have my money, I'm not putting on these pads and I'm not going full contact.
08:45Like, do you think we could just be right back to where we were the other day where
08:48now he's sitting out of padded practice tomorrow?
08:50Yeah.
08:51I wouldn't rule it out.
08:52You know, if he doesn't have a deal done, does he look at that and say, I don't want
08:56to risk anything physically in a fully caught in a fully padded practice and a contact practice?
09:01That's a really good point, Brian.
09:04Tomorrow is going to be assuming they aren't full pads, which you think they will be.
09:08Assuming they aren't full pads, tomorrow is another big day for Jude on in the way that
09:11whole thing plays out or, you know, does he come out stretch and then he's off to the
09:15side the rest of the day?
09:16He will be.
09:17It's something to watch tomorrow for sure.
09:19Yep.
09:20Absolutely.
09:21So we're still on contract watch, uh, one down, but one to go there, uh, with, with
09:27Jude on.
09:28So that's your, your contract updates.
09:30We can also add on the defensive line.
09:33They did sign Mike Purcell today who old Patriot legend, right?
09:38Back on the practice squad.
09:39What was it?
09:40Not Mike 2017.
09:41Not Mike Pennell.
09:42Yep.
09:43That's what I thought.
09:44Some people's industry.
09:45Cause he's a good player.
09:47Couldn't make it.
09:48He had a horrible summer here and didn't make the team.
09:49And it seems like he was, he, he was going the Coney Ely route, but he's bounced back,
09:53but not Mike Pennell, Mike Purcell.
09:55He was on the practice squad here in 2017 for like a month.
09:58Yep.
09:59So Mike Purcell in just some more D line, uh, depth there.
10:03They also, you know, Josiah Brunson was the guy that they brought in the other day.
10:06So some added D line depth, I believe that's back to a full roster, right?
10:10Back to 91.
10:11Yep.
10:12So full roster, uh, as they enter game week, it is game week.
10:17We should have brought that up off the top there.
10:20It is game week.
10:21So full roster a week from the night, first preseason game.
10:24So let's jump into today's practice.
10:26We can keep it all the way with the defense.
10:28Cause we were talking about Godchild.
10:29We were talking about Judon and we can keep it right up front in that front seven.
10:35Again, the pads were off today, so not as much to take away from that front seven, but
10:41I mean, our guy O'Shane Ziminez was just right.
10:45I think it's O'Shane.
10:47That's okay.
10:48We, we, we're all over the map with this name, but I'm going to find the, uh, old dominion
10:57media guide.
10:58Hang on.
10:59Yep.
11:00Cause it's only his first name, his last name in the Patriots media guide, but Ziminez was
11:04active again.
11:05He was very involved on the edge and he had one play where, again, it's not pads, but
11:12a run to the extent where defensive line coach Sherry Montgomery, like noticeably ran on the
11:17field, like gave him a huge high five, gave him an applause.
11:22So he's still stacking days here and you know, he might not be the one-on-one pass rusher
11:27that Judon is, but he seems to be carving out like a nice little role for himself.
11:32And even if Judon's on the team, like talk about a depth pass rusher player there, like
11:37he's been pretty impressive early on here.
11:39And we haven't seen a ton of special teams, but he can play in the kicking game too.
11:42So he seems like somebody who's pointed towards a roster spot for sure.
11:47Yep.
11:48Absolutely.
11:49I absolutely agree with you there.
11:50Uh, anything else on that?
11:52Like D-line, did you notice any D tackles, maybe get a little more work today or, you
11:58know, again, Judon only played the, he played like one play to start 11s and then sat.
12:02So that's where we saw Ziminez a little bit of, you know, Anthony Jennings, as you would
12:06expect on the edge there.
12:07You know, white still really involved, uh, but anyone else on that D-line or you can
12:11even extend that back to the linebackers there in the front seven that caught your eyes throughout
12:15practice today here.
12:16Well, I'll just bring this up.
12:17There was never really a, uh, a logical time to bring this up.
12:21Like there are certain players that have good camps that just, I, we would have never come
12:26on here a few years ago and been like, you know, he's having a good camp, Julian Edelman.
12:29Right.
12:30Cause it's just like, yeah.
12:31And right.
12:32Like what?
12:33Right.
12:35I think Jawan Bentley snuck into that category because I was watching today and he made a
12:38couple of snaps and it was, you know, the fourth or fifth day that he's kind of been
12:43involved and I was like, Jawan Bentley's having a good camp.
12:45We haven't said a thing about it.
12:47And then I kind of was like, well, do we need to at this point?
12:50So I'll just take this opportunity to give him his, uh, his flowers.
12:53He's had a good camp.
12:54Yeah.
12:55Uh, I felt, all right, I have the media.
12:57Oh, it is.
12:58Oh, Shane.
12:59Oh, Shane.
13:00So they have it.
13:01Oh, Shane has this.
13:02Oh, Shane.
13:03Zamanis Zamanis.
13:04Oh boy.
13:05Now we're just all over the place.
13:08Z I M dash a H dash N E S. Or I think it's Zimmer Zimmer Nez.
13:14Oh, Shane Zimmer Nez.
13:16They have it.
13:17Z I M dash dash a H. You said like the phonetic.
13:23Yeah.
13:24Huh?
13:25Here.
13:26I'll copy and paste this into the chat so you can see what I'm working with here.
13:28Um, Pat's have a Z I M Zim a Nez.
13:37Okay.
13:38Yeah.
13:39But I think because that second N I think because the N is capitalized, that's supposed
13:42to be the point of inflection.
13:44So Oh, Shane Zamanis Zamanis Zamanis Zamanis Zamanis not Zimmer.
13:52We're just going to keep saying we got to talk to this guy.
13:57I mean, we should talk to him at some point.
13:59He's so he's out there all the time.
14:01He's a very relevant player now.
14:02Yeah.
14:03We'll have to.
14:04I don't know if someone's requested on what we might have to put that request in to talk
14:07to him.
14:08And just first question, how the hell do you say your first and last name so we can move
14:12on from that?
14:13But, um, that was most of it for the front seven.
14:17Uh, we can move back to, Oh, we can, I'll just add, we still haven't seen Marte Mapu
14:23at all.
14:24He's out there in his Jersey, but he hasn't practiced at all.
14:28So just again, that was a guy we spent all off season wondering what a role is going
14:34to be for him.
14:35And now he might have an opportunity with Sion Taki Taki on the pup to get some snaps
14:39here.
14:40And he just can't even get on the field, uh, to, to earn a role and to carve out a role
14:45for himself.
14:46So that's kind of disappointing.
14:48I would say for Marte Mapu here early in his second camp there, but still haven't seen
14:53any of him.
14:54But, uh, back to the secondary, we saw some one-on-ones with corners first wide receivers.
15:02Uh, I don't think anyone, or we did have Sean Wade and his red non-contact.
15:09He left early.
15:10Marcus Jones went back to the athletic tent at the end of practice.
15:12Didn't look like anything too serious, but don't want to speculate too much.
15:16So we saw a lot of rookie Marcellus dial, uh, and then we saw some of those one-on-ones.
15:21So did anyone from that group kind of stand out to you throughout the day?
15:25Um, we definitely saw more, I think from Marcellus dial, his roles increased.
15:32We've seen, um, as a bold and start to rep more.
15:35And I think some of that is Alex Austin, not exactly picking up where he left off after
15:39the spring.
15:41So I look at those two as guys who seem to be in a position to earn some more reps.
15:45Yep.
15:46And I know the clips are going all around Twitter, Taekwon Thor and who will talk about
15:51one-on-one beaten Christian Gonzalez.
15:55I don't have any worry about Christian Gonzalez, but do you have any worry about Christian
15:59Gonzalez here?
16:01Uh, cause I would say his second NFL camp maybe hasn't been as dominant or, or as good
16:08as his first NFL camp, but I still have no worry about him at corner.
16:13But do you feel differently or maybe the same about Gonzo here early on?
16:18I, so I was trying to remember his camp from last year.
16:21Apparently I'm worried.
16:22Cause that's how Thugger and mass translator Felger and not Jim Murray translated my answer
16:25earlier when I was on with them.
16:27I mean, he definitely hasn't been as dominant as you'd like to see.
16:31Like that's fair.
16:32I don't think that means he's been bad.
16:33And I say, this is somebody who posted one of the one-on-ones like I kind of hoped people
16:38understood what one-on-ones are at this point, massive advantage to the offense.
16:43And really that, that clip I posted is a great throw from Jacoby reset more than anything
16:48else.
16:49That's kind of why I posted it.
16:50Um, I probably should have said that in the tweet, but I'm not, I'm not worried in the
16:54sense that like, okay, I, I'm not worried about him not being a starting caliber player.
17:00Like he's been fine.
17:03It's in the context of, we thought there was like this massive year to leap coming and
17:09it doesn't mean it's not happening, but he hasn't shown that yet.
17:11We haven't seen the guy that locked up Garrett Wilson and Tyree kill last season.
17:16He hasn't played at that level.
17:18Maybe some of that is he hasn't played competitive football in 10 months.
17:21He's trying to get his legs back under him, things like that.
17:24But that's where, if you want to call that a concern and I could see where that would
17:28be a concern.
17:29Cause for this defense to be at the level where it's going to win them games, they kind
17:32of need Gonzalez to be that ace.
17:35Um, if, if we're talking in that context, yeah, I'm a little concerned, little bit lowercase,
17:41but I'm not concerned about him.
17:42Like, oh, well he's a bust.
17:44It was a bad pick.
17:45No, no, no, no, no, no.
17:46I'm not remotely close there.
17:49Yup.
17:50Yeah.
17:51I'm with you there.
17:52And he was someone else who was kind of limited throughout the spring, right?
17:54As he was still working his way back.
17:55So maybe he's still, uh, gearing up, gearing up there to full speed and just needs to get
18:00his legs under, uh, him a little.
18:02So I'm not worried just, I mean, we saw, you saw it in three and a half games last year
18:07and just the athletic traits and just how calm he is as a player.
18:11Uh, I still think very highly of him and think he's going to be a really good player
18:15for them.
18:16So, uh, not hitting the panic button at all there for Christian Gonzalez, but, uh, anything
18:22else defensively, I believe that was all I had.
18:25Yeah.
18:26I mean, the big standout for me today, we'll say they did have to run a lap.
18:29There was a miscommunication.
18:30That was the first time this summer that was between, um, like a defensive back substitution
18:36error.
18:38Well, you, you had schooler and Hawkins kind of trying to figure something out and then
18:42Jonathan Jones came in late.
18:44So just to make note of that first defensive lap.
18:46And then again, my big thing is we're seeing a little less Alex Austin and some other guys
18:51getting some reps in those spots.
18:53And it's mainly been Isaiah Bolden and, uh, uh, Marcella style.
18:58Yeah.
18:59Yeah.
19:00The Marcella style uptick.
19:01And maybe that had something to do with Sean Wade, you know, leaving early, like he's had
19:05some good runs.
19:06Sean Wade, he had the big pass breakup to end a Tuesday's practice.
19:09So, but you saw a lot more Marcella style and I don't think like he stood out.
19:14Which for a corner, like that's a good thing, right?
19:16Like we weren't saying like, oh, they're picking on Marcella style a lot.
19:19So, um, that could be something interesting to see if, if he starts gaining some momentum
19:24here now that he's, you know, one, two weeks into his first NFL training camp.
19:27So, uh, let's take a very quick break.
19:30We'll hear from our friends over at game time, and then we will get back to talk about the

21:00At last minute tickets, lowest prices guaranteed, all right, Patriots offense, good amount of
21:07work in the kind of low red area today for them.
21:10And they had a little one session in between the twenties, but, uh, we'll start with Drake
21:15may thought it was a good bounce back day for him.
21:19And again, they, they weren't in pads, right?
21:21So we didn't have a complete live rush coming at them.
21:24And that's where he kind of ran into problems on the mental side of things.
21:27Uh, the last two practices in full pads, but I thought it was a better day for him.
21:32Uh, I had a couple of those, you know, some impressive, he finally hit a downfield throw
21:36to Mitchell Wilcox credits, Mitchell Wilcox had a kind of good day.
21:40All right.
21:41I'll give credit.
21:42Yeah.
21:43Don't just, don't just blow by that.
21:44Don't just blow by that.
21:45He caught the foot.
21:46He had a few catches today.
21:47I'll give credit.
21:48You're turning me into this like big Mitchell Wilcox defender.
21:50My take was never that he was good.
21:51It was just, he was going to make the team, but you were, you went so negative on him
21:54that I feel like I have to hold you accountable the first day we get out there and he drops
21:58like three balls from Drake May and I'm like, and I know he's a blocking tight end, but
22:02it's like, come on, what are we doing here?
22:04But um, yeah, he had a downfield throw, a nice corner route to Mitchell Wilcox there.
22:10You saw some of those physical tools, like a nice sidearm throw to La Mike, Michael Petway
22:15in the back of the end zone.
22:16But I thought maybe his most impressive play was, you know, the Patriots defense was showing
22:22a blitz, looked like a cover zero blitz and he looked like he checked out of it, hit just
22:26a quick screen to Jacob Warren, which kind of goes back to a play you were talking about
22:30a few days ago where like they're looking, they're showing blitz and instead of, you
22:33know, just hitting the quick backside slant to Javon Baker, he's rolling out, causing
22:37more pressure and he has to throw it away.
22:39So maybe some of the mental things are starting to click a little bit.
22:43That played you a big applause from Jacoby Brissette.
22:46He ran on the field and dap them up.
22:47So a small step in the right direction, I thought for Drake may, but what'd you take
22:51of the rookie's day today out there?
22:53Yeah, he was better.
22:55I don't know that I'd call it a full bounce back because that second 11 on 11 period was
22:59hit and miss.
23:00But that first one, I mean, we saw the guy that you got excited about with the third
23:04overall pick.
23:05He's throwing off platform, restoring sidearm, he's zipping the ball in.
23:07He's hitting tight windows.
23:09He had the one to Petway, which he just put in a keyhole, hit another really good high
23:13point throw to Juju Smith Schuster that he just couldn't hold on to.
23:16We let Marcus Jones knock it out.
23:18That's more about Juju Smith Schuster than anything else.
23:20But again, one of his best throws of the day.
23:23So remember a couple of days ago I said he threw a pick and I was like, yeah, it wasn't
23:26even really an issue.
23:28This is the opposite of that.
23:29It went in the books and this is why you can't only rely on training camp stats.
23:33It went in the books and incompletion, but it was a plus throw.
23:35It was an encouraging throw.
23:37And then I thought his best throw was he's moving a little bit.
23:41He has KJ Osborne crossing along the end line.
23:45He kind of pumps his shoulders, hold the safety, drops the arm slot, sidearm, zips it right
23:50in Osborne or makes a sliding catch ball, splits the safeties for the touchdown.
23:54I was a high level, high level throw.
23:55And I think what's so surprising is for a guy who was struggling, red zones, usually
24:00tough for young quarterback.
24:01Everything speeds up.
24:02There's less room.
24:03Maybe it's because there weren't pads on, but he made the most of that.
24:06Now he's got to do when the pads are on, right?
24:08That's going to be the big question.
24:09But I, he had it.
24:12It was a good day today.
24:13He had a good day.
24:14He's got a stack days, but he had a good day today.
24:17Yep.
24:18So hopefully that's, you know, we saw the ball go in the hoop, right?
24:21He had a good positive day and he can start building off that.
24:26Especially if they put the pads on tomorrow, you know, if he can come back and start stacking
24:30days, as you said, that would be encouraging from Drake made today, but a Jacoby still
24:35clearly operating as the quarterback one, I thought it was kind of another shaky accuracy
24:41day from him.
24:42He missed pop high, miss pop behind once, uh, through one kind of behind KJ Osborne
24:49as well.
24:50So that's kind of two days in a row or two practices in a row where maybe some of the
24:54accuracy got away from Jacoby, but he still bounced back with a couple of nice throws.
24:57He had the ones that Taekwon and 11s and, and the one-on-one-on-ones you were talking
25:01about earlier and a couple of Hunter Henry, uh, there.
25:05So what, what, what, what'd you think of Jacoby out there today?
25:08I mean, like he had that one miss, but another steady, you know, even day, he just continues
25:13to, to, to be that presence.
25:15And I think that's what it's going to be.
25:17I think that's just what he's going to be.
25:19He's been a minute since we watched a veteran quarterback at Adrian's training camp.
25:23Um, I think he's just going to continue to go about his business and operate the offense.
25:27Yep.
25:28I just love his energy out there.
25:30Like he's pumping up the crowd when the net, when they're just throwing into the nets,
25:34and if he's not throwing, and then as we talked about, like he's running on the field,
25:38dapping up Drake may after good plays after, you know, Joe Milton doing good plays and
25:44that's on them.
25:45Like the offense the last year is they've, they've lacked a lot and energy is one of
25:50those things.
25:51So, uh, just good to see that energy kind of on the sideline and on the field when,
25:55when Jacoby is out there, I think, and that's what you get like with this veteran leader.
25:58That's one of the reasons we all wanted them throughout, throughout the free agency period
26:04there.
26:05So, um, but the QB three battle, Joe Milton got the one period in seven on sevens, Bailey's
26:11app.
26:12He got the one period in 11 on 11s, Joe Milton, pretty impressive again, three touchdowns,
26:17I think.
26:18And one really impressive one, like back right corner to Quan Baker.
26:22Now he's not competing with Drake may right now he's still running with the, with the
26:27threes, but, um, Joe Milton's kind of stacking some impressive days and then, you know, it
26:33was just kind of the, the Bailey's appy experience.
26:36He had one nice play where he kind of navigated the pocket and hit a case on booty who made
26:40a nice catch might've been a sack and live action, but kind of the Bailey's appy experience
26:44and Joe Milton, uh, you can take it away on Joe Milton's been, been pretty impressive.
26:48He has, but here's the thing as it relates to Drake may, I think the wires get crossed
26:53when we talk about performance and we talk about performance versus expectations.
26:58Joe Milton has been better compared to his expectations than Drake may has compared to
27:03his, but the bar for Joe Milton in the bar for Drake may are aren't even in the same
27:10stratosphere.
27:11So yes, Joe Milton has impressed so far in camp, the bar was much lower and he's cleared
27:17the bar and he's cleared it significantly.
27:19Drake may maybe hasn't cleared his bar, but his bar was to be ready to, to not, I think
27:23for some people, not just start week one, but like immediately be the clear cut face
27:29of an NFL franchise.
27:31So when you look at it in that regard, yes, Joe Milton has outperformed his expectations.
27:37Drake may hasn't, the expectations weren't exactly the same, but Joe Milton has outperformed
27:41expectations.
27:43He's been good and we'll see what they end up doing about the backup quarterback.
27:47If they don't keep Bailey's appy, do they want a buffer between Drake may and Joe Milton?
27:51And I understand if they don't want Joe Milton to be the first rookie quarterback that plays
27:55this year, that's kind of a weird message to be sending.
27:58So maybe there is another quarterback that mixes in.
28:01I've been using Nathan Rourke.
28:02I know he got signed by the Falcons today.
28:05But I Milton's playing like a player that you want to keep around and maybe they end
28:12up having to risk him to the practice squad, you know, going through waivers, but every
28:15year and hold me to this, cause I'm going to try to be better about this.
28:18Every year we go through like nine or 10 players.
28:20Yeah.
28:21I don't know.
28:22I don't know.
28:23He's going to get to the practice squad.
28:24And because like, we're trying to make the roster projection like dramatic and then they
28:28all clear.
28:29So watch, I say that, and this will be the year that they get like three or four guys
28:34picked up.
28:35I think we had this exact conversation in like may or something where I was like, I
28:39want to be better of being like, they could probably get this guy to the practice squad.
28:43And then you were like, well, once we say that, that guy's going to get taken and claimed
28:48off waivers.
28:49But Joe Milton's looking like a player that you want to keep around.
28:52He's not looking like he's going to suddenly pass Drake may, but he's looking like a guy
28:56you want to keep around.
28:57Yep.
28:58Yeah.
28:59He's got all the physical tools as we know, and he's showing some, uh, you know, interesting
29:04promise in some other areas as well.
29:06So that's a good kind of third developmental quarterback to, to keep it around there.
29:10So that's your quarterback report.
29:13Let's go to the old line because we had some shuffling up there today and, uh, David Andrews
29:19was back.
29:20He, his, uh, newborn boy was in the hospital.
29:24Um, so he was released today.
29:27So that was all good news around, but David Andrews was back, but he didn't participate
29:31in team drills.
29:33So Nick Leverett was back at center, but the big news was kind of at the tackle spots.
29:38We finally looked like we were getting some continuity there for straight practices with
29:42Caden Wallace at left and chooks, the core for at right.
29:46A little wrinkle today with the Darien low at the left side on the left tackle spot in
29:52a true score for state at the right tackle spot.
29:55And then Caden Wallace bumped back to that second unit.
29:57He played left tackle and that shifted Calvin Anderson to the right tackle on the second
30:01unit.
30:02So I thought it was weird.
30:04Like we've been talking, get your five, start building this continuity.
30:09And like that five with Caden Wallace two through the two padded practices, we're building
30:14some momentum and look pretty impressive.
30:16And then they, they put the Darien low in there, kind of a curve ball.
30:19I wasn't a huge fan of that.
30:21Uh, I'd imagine you're kind of on the same wavelength there, but, uh, what, what'd you
30:26think of that low and Caden Wallace switch at left tackle today?
30:29Uh, it's an on padded practice.
30:32So for me, it's like, all right, how much were they really going to get done up front?
30:35But you know how I feel?
30:36I want that continuity back.
30:37So let's, I was hoping that talk group with Caden Wallace, we get a shot at least through
30:42the first preseason game.
30:43And, you know, after that it is a logical time to reevaluate how to go, do you want
30:46to make a change or not?
30:48But it's, it, let's say let's, if they suddenly make that switch after Caden Wallace was playing
30:55really well, I, that'd be head scratcher.
30:58Maybe they just wanted to give Wallace a rest.
31:00He's a rookie.
31:01Like, I don't really know, but it's that I don't think he was bumped for anything performance
31:06based or he shouldn't have been at least.
31:08Yep.
31:09It just seemed like a weird time to make that move again, because Caden Wallace was playing
31:13well and it seemed like they finally had a five up there.
31:16I thought maybe they want to give like Drake may Caden Wallace because the backup offensive
31:21line was a mess for Drake may, but then you could, you like, you could have just switched
31:26for Darian low and Calvin Anderson because of the Darian low is a better left tackle
31:30and Calvin Anderson can still play right.
31:32So I don't know.
31:34It was just kind of a weird wrinkle out there today.
31:37But if they're in pads tomorrow, which again, we expect them to be, uh, we'll get a better
31:42sense of that.
31:43Cause maybe Caden Wallace is just back there at left tackle tomorrow and we're back to
31:47back to where we started.
31:48But yeah, just for the continuity point, like I would have preferred to have that same five
31:54back out there for a fifth straight day at that tackle spot, but, um, we will see how
31:59that looks tomorrow.
32:01So, uh, anything else to add on the O line?
32:03It was pretty much tackle spot and David Andrews back, but anything else that you have of note
32:08there?
32:09Uh, not upfront now.
32:11Yeah.
32:12Yeah.
32:13Again, not, not padded practice.
32:14So just, uh, personnel groups with those tackles, but, uh, wide receivers.
32:19Are you doing Taekwondo big day one-on-one?
32:22We mentioned he, uh, we just have to ask, are you doing Taekwondo every show?
32:27So Evan accused me of doing the Taekwon Thornton thing and yes, because we did a three up three
32:33down for camp and I had Taekwondo as an honorable mention because I didn't want to put them
32:36in my three ups.
32:38And here's the difference between what Evan did and what other people have done and what
32:42I'm doing.
32:43I am saying this all in the past tense, like Brian objectively who has been their best.
32:49And this is what, there's some major caveats here with Kendrick Bourne and pop Douglas,
32:54essentially not practicing who has been their best veteran wide receiver in camp Taekwondo.
33:02Right now that eliminates four players when I say it that way, but their best four players
33:07like right.
33:09But that's the thing we're talking about.
33:10If they're six receiver, let's give credit where credit's due.
33:14He's been good.
33:15And one hiccup he's had has not been able to get it done in pads.
33:18He has done that so far.
33:20He has to stay healthy.
33:23And I think part of the problem in his first two years was, and I've talked about this.
33:26He lost developmental time by getting hurt because you're not doing some of the teaching
33:30stuff by the time he gets back in October that you're doing in the summer.
33:34He's got to stay healthy and he's got to keep doing it consistent because I've seen this
33:38before where a guy just puts a good week together and then drops off.
33:42And it really has been, you know, it's been too bad at practice.
33:45That's it.
33:46But he's getting open.
33:47His hands have been reliable.
33:49He's made a couple of plays through contact.
33:51He forget the one I want to be Christian Gonzalez in elevenths, like he's been good.
33:57So I want to give him the credit, but that's all in past tense.
34:01If I had to do a roster projection today, I still probably would have him off.
34:06But to this point, he's done as much, as much as you can realistically ask him to do.
34:12Yeah.
34:13I think that's fair.
34:14And again, he had the one-on-one wins over Gonzalez.
34:17He beat him.
34:18Yeah.
34:19One-on-ones don't count.
34:20I think he, I think he beat him in elevenths and then beat him in elevenths.
34:23That one counts a lot more.
34:24And then he, he scored a touchdown on Alex Austin too, and kind of the back, back of
34:28the end zone there.
34:29So he's stacking days and he's doing it with the pads to come on.
34:32But like, I think the preseason games will be big for him, right?
34:36Like taking real in-game physical contact.
34:39He's obviously got to hold up.
34:41So, so that'll, those, those games will be big for him, but again, give him credit where
34:45credit's due.
34:47They kind of asked for him in building some competitive days here, but I thought he, Taekwon
34:55was good today.
34:56I thought pop Douglas was the best receiver on the field and he's still in his red non-contact
35:00Jersey, but he's taking part of team drills and he was just like uncoverable today in
35:06his worst enemy.
35:08Unfortunately was Patriots quarterbacks because Jacoby missed them high once a Jacoby missed
35:14them behind in the end zone.
35:15He had a miscommunication with Drake may which may took the credit for, or the blame
35:21for, and then the one pass he finally caught, it was like, it was an in-cut and it was still
35:26a little bit high for may and he had to go up and snag it.
35:29But I thought pop Douglas was awesome today.
35:32We're starting to see him be a little more involved and you just see those, the pop we
35:37saw last year, the quick twitch defense defenders just can't get their hands on them.
35:42And I thought the most encouraging thing was like, looks like a little chemistry, maybe
35:46building there with Drake may.
35:48And we have the Josh downs comparison who may was awesome with that UNC.
35:53So that could be something that, you know, those are two young guys, right?
35:56Rookie and second year receiver that you want to build around those guys.
35:59I thought you might sell a little chemistry there and maybe not a surprise that may had
36:03a better day with playing a little bit more with pop today.
36:06Yeah.
36:07I mean, this is kind of what we talked about and you just sort of hit on it.
36:10You let him play with the better players is going to elevate his game.
36:13And it's good to see pop starting to get in a rhythm and he looks good and, and there
36:16doesn't look like he doesn't look super rusty or anything like that.
36:19So I have no problem with them taking it slow with him and, and easing him in.
36:24Like, let's just get him to the regular season as healthy as possible.
36:28But he's been, he he's been good now that he's getting involved again.
36:33Yep.
36:34So, uh, anything from the rookie receivers today, kind of two quieter days from the
36:40Baker had maybe a really good contact through contact catch against Mikey Victor is from
36:46Joe mill.
36:47Oh no, it's from Bailey's happy.
36:48Sorry.
36:49So Bailey's happy late in practice in that 11th period, in that red zone 11th period
36:54where Victor just kind of face guard them and he went up over him, caught the ball with
36:59Victor kind of in his chest and held onto the ground.
37:02Now I don't know if he got two feet down.
37:04We were kind of debating on the hill.
37:06Was that the one in the left corner?
37:08Like yeah.
37:09Yeah.
37:10Yeah.
37:11So the defense's reaction shockingly made it seem like he was out off of that.
37:16The crowd made it seem like, well, I was going off of more Baker's reaction didn't seem very
37:22excited about the catch.
37:23So that made me think maybe he was out of bounds, but you know what?
37:27It's, it's training camp.
37:28We're talking process, not results to get to that ball and haul it in and, and hold
37:32onto it to the ground is encouraging.
37:34He'll learn to get that, that, that other foot in also is probably pass interference
37:38if we're B, if we're really going to nitpick it probably.
37:41So the two rookies, yeah, they're still impressive and just, we, we say it every show, but the
37:48usage still hasn't changed.
37:49So we still have to say like they're out there a ton and they're getting a lot of runs.
37:53So encouraging sign there.
37:57Anything else from those maybe depth receivers we saw booty catch, you know, a pair of touchdowns,
38:04not much from Jalen Rager.
38:05The last few practices, again, in that like fifth, six wide receiver battle, uh, and not
38:11too much from KJ Osborne, he had that one touchdown from Drake may that you were talking
38:16about, like that sidearm throw, which was a really nice pass, but, uh, any of those
38:20kinds of depth guys, you think gaining, I don't know about gaining ground, like maybe
38:25more fallen back again, like Rager's quiet.
38:27I mean, booty had a pair of touchdowns, but anything from that kind of group today,
38:31I mean, just choose your, some issues to fit in there.
38:35He might be fallen out of that group at this point.
38:38So, so this was another, I just asked who's their best veteran receiver been who's their
38:42worst veteran receiver been.
38:44And I, I say that like, obviously some of these guys are repping less than Juju, but
38:48I can think of two plays where Kwon Baker was like, okay, let's go on Baker.
38:53Look at that.
38:54Jay Kwon Jackson had a really good diving catch in this camp.
38:56David Wallace had one play where he caught up to a Joe Milton go ball that was overthrown.
39:01Juju caught a slant from Joe Milton yesterday, but I think that was more of the throw than
39:06the catch.
39:07And it's just, he's been like a drop a day.
39:08He can't get separation.
39:10He has struggled mightily and I just don't know, even with the $9 million, I don't know
39:16how they keep Juju Smith Schuster on this team at this point, if this is the player
39:20he's going to be.
39:21Yup.
39:22He's done nothing to warrant a roster spot.
39:25And then he's certainly not playing over anybody like, even if he makes a team, he's going
39:30to be like a game day and active because he's not playing special teams and he doesn't
39:33warrant a spot over any of the six, seven receivers above them.
39:37So yeah, I had his only target today that pass from Drake may, which again was, he threw
39:43him open a very nice pass and he got his hands on it and then he lets Marcus Jones wrestle
39:47it away.
39:48So that's just continues to look like they're going to have to eat that money or someone's
39:54going to have to get really desperate to try to trade for them.
39:57But if they're paying any attention to what, you know, the reports are out here or if he's
40:03looking like this in the preseason, I don't know if anyone's going to trade for him because
40:06they probably just know the paths are going to have to cut them at some point.
40:09Yeah, it's just not, it's been, I feel like I'm being extreme using the phrase worst case
40:17scenario for Juju Smith Schuster, Smith Schuster specifically independent or anything else.
40:22Worst case scenario.
40:23Yeah, I don't, there, there really hasn't.
40:25I mean he tripped on a rock, he hurt himself tripping on a rock, like as it has not been
40:32the summer he wanted to have, I think it will put it that way.
40:35No, definitely not.
40:37Um, uh, tight ends.
40:40We can loop them in with past catchers.
40:42Uh, just under Henry continues to be Mr. Reliable, Mr. Consistent, especially down in the red
40:47area today.
40:49Um, Austin Hooper still involved Mitchell Wilcox.
40:53We will give flowers to Mitchell Wilcox.
40:55He's still very much involved and he was actually catching the football, uh, today.
41:00So anything else from that, uh, tight end room that caught your eye?
41:04Uh, no, I think that's pretty much it.
41:06Not a bit.
41:07It's crazy.
41:08It's weird.
41:09Like red zone day.
41:10Not a big day for the tight end.
41:11So nothing that stood out.
41:12The Michael Pettway is getting more involved.
41:14So I wonder if maybe Mitchell Wilcox after his three drops has some competition, but
41:19not, I don't even know, did all Ed, I know Henry caught one touchdown, but it was kind
41:23of just, you got to open over the middle, Jacoby reset, flipped it to him.
41:27It wasn't that mind blowing of a play.
41:29Did Austin Hooper have a catch today?
41:31I don't think he did.
41:32He caught, I have them catching the very first pass from Jacoby and 11 on 11s.
41:37Okay.
41:38But that wasn't even, that wasn't red zone.
41:40No, that was, that was in the, in between the twenties I think.
41:43So just that one catch and then yeah, I don't even think he had a target the rest of the
41:46day.
41:47Yeah.
41:48Okay.
41:49So yeah.
41:50Red zone day, but kind of quiet for the tight ends.
41:52A little uncharacteristic there.
41:54Yep.
41:55Um, and I don't think much to add running back wise, uh, in a non-padded practice, although
42:01I will say in one-on-ones, Ramondre Stevenson had maybe the best win of the day against
42:06Rayquan McMillan, which was, it was nasty.
42:09So I'll bring that up.
42:10Uh, just completely dusted him out of his shoes.
42:12But again, did you see the one, uh, drew Michael hasty ran against Jelani to buy, uh, yes,
42:20actually.
42:21I got video of that.
42:22So is this really nifty thing where he looks like he's running a Texas and to buy kind
42:27of stonewalls him as he cuts back in and he's even kind of like quits on the route for like
42:32a half second.
42:33And then he just quickly cuts back the other way.
42:36And it was, uh, I don't know if that was entirely planned from the start or if it was an adjustment
42:41or whatever, but, um, my nice little move from to Michael hasty there to get some separation.
42:46I think that was the one that drew a loud F bomb from Mr. Tavai, I believe.
42:51Yeah.
42:52He was not happy.
42:53He knew he got caught.
42:54Yeah.
42:55That was a, that was a good move by hasty.
42:56And that's his game, right?
42:57Like he should strive in those areas.
42:59So, and it's not devised game.
43:01Like ideally he's not in coverage that much covering a Jamaican hasty type past, but it
43:05was still good route.
43:07Good route.
43:08Give him credit.
43:09Yeah.
43:10Credit where credit's due.
43:11Uh, I think that's it offensively.
43:13So, uh, we can do a little special teams.
43:17We saw kickoffs for the first time, or I would say first time, right?
43:22They did one kickoff the other day, but like they were kicking it off from the 50 yard
43:26line.
43:27It was kind of weird.
43:28This was, this seemed to be like the first real kickoff drill.
43:31And, uh, I see everyone asking about the hall of fame game in the chat.
43:34I'm excited to turn it on just for the opening kickoff to see what the hell happens.
43:38So, uh, we'll, we'll get that in about 12 minutes here.
43:42So we'll have to do special teams in 10 minutes.
43:45Um, looks like they were experimenting with some, you know, alignment wrinkles and stuff
43:51like that.
43:52We can't go into too much detail about it, but it seems like they were getting pretty
43:55creative with some of the alignments, uh, the returners, they're going to be a two return
44:00team that carried over from the spring and, uh, Jalen Rager and Antonio Gibson were the
44:04top guys there.
44:05So, you know, the Jalen Rager special team stock is still high in that department.
44:11Uh, did anything that we kind of can talk about in the kickoffs or maybe players that
44:15were out there, uh, stand out to you now that we finally got to see this a little bit?
44:19Oh, just seeing it in person.
44:20I think what was jarring to me was the gap between that line where the, the coverage
44:27and blocking teams are and the returners is much bigger than it looks on those graphics.
44:33And that's going to allow teams to really set things up.
44:36I think we're going to see teams.
44:38I think teams are going to be afraid of this.
44:41I think teams are going to be afraid because there is such an opportunity for an explosive
44:43play.
44:44We're going to see a lot of touchbacks.
44:46If we get a lot of touchbacks in the preseason, cause it sounds like the NFL is kind of flying
44:49by the seat of their pants on this dried mail.
44:52Let it slip the other day.
44:53They're still making adjustments to the league office.
44:55I wonder if before week one, we find out that the touchbacks now going to go to the 40 instead
45:00of the 30 and really penalized teams.
45:02And maybe not, maybe that's a little quick.
45:05If they want this to be a play, they need to make that change because it is scary as
45:09the kicking team.
45:10The 30 is not, I guess, scary.
45:13Like the 30 teams are going to be okay giving the ball at the first couple of weeks.
45:19They're banging out big returns left and right teams will say, fine, we'll defend 70 yards.
45:23Teams are going to be basically F this.
45:25We're going to kick it through the end zone and you're going to start at the 30 instead
45:27of the 25.
45:28So they got to add at least maybe like the 35, but I think the 40, if you really want
45:34to, if you really want teams to return, you would make the, the touchback, the 40 and
45:39then teams like you're really going to have to, you're really going to have to guard this
45:43and return the ball.
45:44So yeah, we'll get it again.
45:48We'll get our first live action in 10 minutes here in the hall of fame game and see what
45:52happens.
45:53But cool to kind of see that, how that looked for the first time in person and how that
45:57might develop.
45:58And we also ended with live field goals, Chad, Rylan, Joey slides still going at it.
46:03Sly let off again.
46:05They worked from 32, 35, 39 and 49 yards.
46:09Joey slide three of four.
46:11His one miss was wide left from 39 yards and Chad Ryland was four or four making all of
46:18his.
46:19So he's been pretty impressive Ryland.
46:22I have them 12 of 13 here and slide 10 of 13 in the summer now.
46:27So a slight lead for Chad Ryland.
46:30Are you confident in it?
46:32Are you gaining some confidence in Chad?
46:35I still think it's pretty even.
46:36I will say this.
46:37Something I've noticed about the way Chad Ryan's kicking the ball.
46:39Yeah.
46:40You were looking at that.
46:42You saw that, right?
46:43We're like off the foot.
46:45It looks like it's going to miss and hooks back.
46:46So I don't know if that's an adjustment he made or just something that happened today
46:49with it.
46:50Wasn't, it wasn't windy where we were, but it was windy up.
46:53Um, but yeah, I, I, I still too close to call so far.
46:58Right.
46:59Yep.
47:00So Chad Ryan went through four, four, the four field goal sessions and one they each
47:06kicked once.
47:07So still plenty of time to go and hopefully they actually get some field goal opportunities
47:12in the preseason this year.
47:14So we can see some preseason field goals and how that, uh, shakes out.
47:18I think what they have one or two field goals in the preseason last year and Nick Fulk took
47:22both of them, which was weird to let, let him do that.
47:26But, uh, yeah, hopefully we're moving the ball a little bit better in the preseason.
47:30So we get some field goals and see how those guys, uh, look, but yeah, encouraging start
47:35for Ryland, I would say, you know, only missing one kick through, through four, uh, four field
47:40goal sessions.
47:41So we'll, we'll see if he can keep building off that momentum, but, uh, anything else,
47:46any last notes from day seven from you or let's go watch five minutes of football's
47:52back followed by two and a half hours of this.
47:54Isn't what I remember football being.
47:56I'll say this since it is all a fame game.
47:59I do like to point out it is, hang on, I got to talk real quick.
48:05Yeah.
48:06What year was that?
48:07Yeah.
48:08Uh, I want to say like, Oh, a month, 2009.
48:13So yeah.
48:14So it is the, I was going to say, I was going to say oh seven or, or, or oh eight.
48:18So I was right there.
48:19It is the 15th anniversary of the greatest moment in the hall of fame game history.
48:23So not when they used the wrong paint and had to cancel the game because the field was
48:27too sticky.
48:28That's the second greatest one.
48:29The greatest moment hall of fame game history is the Titans had designed this beautiful
48:34fake punt.
48:35I mean, brilliant design.
48:37It burned it in the most meaningless game on the entire NFL calendar.
48:42Shout out Jeff Fisher.
48:43I will always find that hilarious.
48:45And at the time, cause I was how old would I be?
48:47I would've been like 14.
48:48No, it was older than that.
48:49Yeah.
48:50I was like 14, 15.
48:52I was like, Oh man, that's so cool.
48:54Look at that.
48:55What a play.
48:56And now looking back on it, I'm like, why the hell did they do that?
48:59Yep.
49:00So I don't know.
49:01We'll see.
49:02Pat's are going to have a hall of fame game soon because it's, uh, what year, 24, 26,
49:0728, 20, 20 years, four years.
49:10I think it's five years.
49:11Right?
49:12So 20, 27, 20, 28.
49:13I'm sure it'll be Pat's box hall of fame game, but it's coming up.
49:17We'll have one soon.
49:19Who knows what the kickoff will look like at that point, but there is one.
49:22Yeah, probably not.
49:23But, uh, we'll wrap it up here.
49:26Day seven of Pat's camp, uh, we'll be back tomorrow for day eight.
49:31Hopefully it is a full pad of practice.
49:34I believe that's what we're expecting going to be another hot one down there at Gillette
