00:00:00Good morning, everybody.
00:00:03Welcome into a crossover episode.
00:00:05Patriots beat Patriots daily.
00:00:06It's Alex Barth, Taylor Kyles, Brian Hines with you.
00:00:09Mike Kadlik is out on the golf course, but we have the three of us here for what will
00:00:14be a very packed show.
00:00:15We're going to chronologically.
00:00:17So two really main things we're going to hit on today.
00:00:20First, the Patriots wrapped up many camp yesterday, wrapped up their off season workout program.
00:00:25For the most part, the rookies stay and do classwork stuff for another two weeks, but
00:00:28OTAs, many camp in the books.
00:00:31We won't see the Patriots together on the field again until training camp starts in
00:00:35late July.
00:00:36So we'll talk a little bit about yesterday's practice.
00:00:38We all have recaps up, 98fivesportsup.com, clnsmedia.com, patspulpit.com if you want
00:00:44to find recaps of yesterday's practice specifically, but we're going to kind of take a more big
00:00:49picture approach today to what we saw throughout the spring.
00:00:53And then of course, Brady night, it finally happened.
00:00:57It delivered, lived up to the hype, dare I say, exceeded the hype, uh, as you can tell
00:01:02by maybe how low energy some of us are this morning, I mean, couldn't go to bed last night
00:01:07after that.
00:01:08It's unbelievable.
00:01:09Uh, so we'll, we'll talk about that as well.
00:01:11Uh, so throw your comments in the chat, whatever, but, uh, good morning gentlemen and happy
00:01:16summer vacation yesterday, definitely between it being the last practice between the Brady
00:01:21ceremony.
00:01:22It was a big time last day of school kind of feel today certainly feels like the first
00:01:27day of summer break.
00:01:28Although I do have three shows today, including this one, um, but we we're here we go.
00:01:33Like now it's just, we, we gear up and we're entering the dead period of gear up to camp.
00:01:39Yeah.
00:01:40Um, yeah, it would be, yesterday was a big day.
00:01:42You mentioned kind of low energy that, you know, usually a little bundle of little energy
00:01:48myself over here, but I mean, it was cool.
00:01:50Um, like getting to see so many Patriots players, something like you didn't really
00:01:54expect and, uh, that you haven't really thought about in a while, Dan Connolly looks like
00:01:58a new man.
00:01:59I think that was the one guy on the carpet where everybody was like, that's not him.
00:02:02There's no way that's him.
00:02:04Um, and obviously like seeing Randy Moss and Belichick and all the love and everything
00:02:09were highlights.
00:02:10I'm sure we'll talk about that, but, uh, yeah, you know, excited to get into some break.
00:02:13The work never stops.
00:02:14I know we'll be pumping out some content still, but, uh, definitely a little bit of a step
00:02:19back.
00:02:20All right.
00:02:21So let's, let's start though with practices.
00:02:23Let's start with spring practices.
00:02:24Uh, Brian, we'll start with you for this one.
00:02:26Drake may we saw him in rookie mini camp.
00:02:29So we saw him what?
00:02:30Five times rookie mini camp, three OTAs, six times, and then two, two mini camp practices.
00:02:38What changed between the first time we saw him at rookie mini camp and yesterday, what
00:02:42were the biggest differences?
00:02:46I mean, it seemed like he, I don't know how much really changed.
00:02:50Like he, he seemed pretty comfortable I'd say throughout the whole thing.
00:02:54He said, um, well, he said like the footwork was a big thing.
00:02:59Obviously he had to learn the left foot up.
00:03:00He had to learn under center.
00:03:01He had to learn some of the, the run game footwork.
00:03:04So he said he got more comfortable with that throughout, uh, the coaches spoke very highly
00:03:09of him last week when he talked to the offensive coaches, they seemed impressed with how he
00:03:13was handling everything, how he was getting, you know, how he was taking that new approach,
00:03:17how he was getting in and out of the huddle, you know, those lengthy 12 to 14, uh, word
00:03:21play calls, which he doesn't have to do in college.
00:03:24Not a lot of guys have to do in college.
00:03:25So just kind of the little details that might be hard to kind of pick up just watching,
00:03:31but you know, hearing, I think that was something that he, uh, you know, really hit on and,
00:03:36and really got more familiar with over these, you know, last month, really, since, since
00:03:40he got here, but on the field.
00:03:42I think just not much change.
00:03:45Like he looked like Drake may from what we've been seeing on TV or on tape the last two
00:03:49years at UNC, which is a guy who has tons of talent.
00:03:53So now it's just about getting that ability out of him.
00:03:55And I have some confidence that they'll do that.
00:03:58Like I think if the spring was his first test, like he, he passed it with, with flying colors
00:04:03and now it's going to be exciting to see how that, you know, turns to training camp and
00:04:08you know, he said he still got that red jersey on, right.
00:04:10He can't get hit.
00:04:11So let's see when we kind of get in a live setting in the preseason and even some of
00:04:15those joint practices.
00:04:16But I thought it was a good first, a good first impression of Drake may throughout the
00:04:20spring.
00:04:21Taylor.
00:04:22Yeah.
00:04:23And like six practices really isn't a ton and there were so many that we also didn't
00:04:27see because we only got like one OTA practice and all that.
00:04:30I will say, I feel like he started to get more aggressive towards the end of the practices
00:04:34we saw.
00:04:35And now some of that may have been the script of the nature of the situations, but I know
00:04:39the second to last practice, we saw that first mini camp was the most aggressive he
00:04:43was in any of the practices where we saw the ball placement really shine where he wants
00:04:48to go down field.
00:04:50He can, and it doesn't really matter how well guys are covered.
00:04:52He can put it in spots where they can't get it, which is a really cool thing to see.
00:04:56And then I think in the last practice, what stood out was how he bounced back, even though
00:05:00he was pretty shaky for most of it.
00:05:04And I think it was the, one of the last OTA practices where he wasn't really great.
00:05:10We saw him throw the, the one where he had the two interceptions, it kind of seemed like
00:05:13he got in his head a little bit.
00:05:14Now there's no way to know for sure, but he seemed like he got a little more conservative.
00:05:18Maybe he wasn't going through his reads quite as decisively, it may have contributed to
00:05:22the Antonio Gibson miscommunication where they weren't on the same page.
00:05:26But then yesterday we definitely saw that even though his accuracy wasn't always great
00:05:30and it was kind of what you saw at UNC where those short, quick passes sometimes were behind
00:05:35his receiver, which, you know, sometimes leads to tougher adjustments or sometimes leads
00:05:39to pass breakups.
00:05:40Like we saw with Alex Austin and Jalen Polk, he still bounced back and had that crazy touchdown
00:05:44to, you know, win the period and end a minicamp practice, which is really cool.
00:05:49So seeing him be able to mentally overcome that and still make big plays was huge, especially
00:05:53for a young player.
00:05:55I think the biggest thing for me and, you know, feel free to call it simplistic.
00:06:00He just did a lot more.
00:06:02He was on the field, he was repping and they're, they're expeeding this.
00:06:05I think any talk of, excuse me.
00:06:09I think any, you know, you know how that's about, it's about to be an insane take, um,
00:06:13you know, any talk of, oh, he he's got to sit the whole year.
00:06:17Like he, you know, we're not going to see him till 24, 85.
00:06:20Like, no, no, they're getting this guy ready to play this year.
00:06:24Maybe not week one, but they're, they're not, you know, this is not a slow pace that they're
00:06:31getting him ready.
00:06:32And I, I don't, don't misconstrue that.
00:06:34I don't think they're rushing him either, but it would be very easy if they didn't think
00:06:39he was going to play this year to kind of backseat them.
00:06:43And I don't outside of that very first practice and remember how panicked we were after that
00:06:48first practice outside of that very first practice.
00:06:51He's not in, in, he's not in the back seat.
00:06:53I don't know.
00:06:54He's in the driver's seat.
00:06:55It might be the passenger seat.
00:06:56Maybe it's one of those old school, like pickup trucks or it's a bench seat and there's three
00:07:00seats up front, but, uh, he's not in the back seat.
00:07:03No, they're getting ready.
00:07:04They're working with him.
00:07:05They're there.
00:07:06I would say co-main focus is his development because they're still trying to get Jacoby
00:07:10Brissette ready to, to start the season.
00:07:12But the reality is I think Jacoby Brissette's a veteran.
00:07:15He's been in this league.
00:07:17He's been in this system.
00:07:18He played for Alex van Pelt.
00:07:20I think that can be, they don't need to spend as much time on Jacoby Brissette for the same
00:07:27result because he's a veteran.
00:07:29He's experienced, he's done this.
00:07:31So there's a ton of focus on Drake May right now.
00:07:33As there should be, this is all good.
00:07:36And I think they're trying to get him ready as soon as possible.
00:07:39And to your point, I keep seeing online where people say like, stick to the plan and sit
00:07:43them for the year.
00:07:44It's like, that's a plan that the internet came up with.
00:07:46I don't think the Patriots were ever saying we have to sit Drake May.
00:07:50I think they've always said it's going to be a competition.
00:07:53And we obviously saw Matt Jones as the third, Drake May as the three early on in these practices
00:08:00with the veterans.
00:08:01And it was pretty obvious from those days that Bailey Zappi was never going to be QB
00:08:05too.
00:08:06Those guys were in completely different areas.
00:08:08So it was nice to see Drake May kind of take that step forward.
00:08:10And you hear from Gerard Mayo, progress isn't linear.
00:08:13He's going to have his good days, he's going to have his bad days, but you want to have
00:08:17more good than bad.
00:08:18And he is still on a steady trajectory and yeah, from what we saw in practice, I mean,
00:08:22he just accesses the middle of the field in a way that none of the other quarterbacks
00:08:25do.
00:08:26Like what Jacoby Brissette, even in his NFL tape, usually his big plays come down the
00:08:30sideline and on outbreaking routes, kind of, but the way that Drake can attack like
00:08:34on crossing routes, posts and things like that, I think once he really figures things
00:08:39out and can give you somewhat of a Jacoby level of consistency in terms of operating
00:08:44the offense.
00:08:45I know we've talked about it behind the scenes.
00:08:46I think the defense is just going to be like, why are we not playing this guy?
00:08:49Because we were having trouble handling him in practice and defending him.
00:08:53So I can only imagine what it's going to look like for other teams.
00:08:55So yeah, I just also want to make it clear that I don't think the team ever planned on
00:08:59sitting him for sure.
00:09:00It's just been how fast can he get along, get his fundamentals down and be able to like
00:09:04stick to those and be consistent, even though bullets are flying around him.
00:09:08Just to kind of rephrase something you said there, Taylor, about, cause I've heard this
00:09:11two people saying, and I said this leading up to the draft, remember I said, whatever
00:09:14your plan is for the quarterback, stick to it.
00:09:16You can't get wishy-washy over it if, you know, suddenly you're 0-5 and you're struggling
00:09:20to sell tickets.
00:09:22But I don't, I, if the plan was to sit him for the whole year, I don't think they'd be
00:09:27investing in him as much right now as they are in terms of practice reps.
00:09:31So it's not, Oh, you can now deviate from the plan of sitting him for the whole year.
00:09:36What I'm sitting here saying is that I don't believe that was ever the plan.
00:09:41The way they are acting is a guy that they always expected to play at some point this
00:09:45year.
00:09:46So I don't, if, if, if you out there want to say that they should have sat him all year,
00:09:51like you can make that argument, but I don't think we can sit here and say that the Patriots
00:09:55ever considered sitting him all year, Brian, I don't know if you agree with that or not.
00:09:59Yeah.
00:10:00I mean, I've been, since they drafted him and before, like, I think he could potentially
00:10:04start week one and I'm still not even ruling that out just because, and I don't want to
00:10:10rush them.
00:10:11And I don't think, as you said, like they're going to rush them, but you just get out there
00:10:14and the talent just kind of jumps out to you.
00:10:17And there are days where we've been out there and it's just, he's the best quarterback talent
00:10:21wise on the field.
00:10:23And if you go away from him, like, again, what does it say to the defense?
00:10:26What does it say to the locker room?
00:10:27If you're benching the best guy, and then if you're losing games like that could send
00:10:31kind of a ruffle through there.
00:10:33And as you know, Taylor said, like we've seen him be able to handle some bumps in the road
00:10:38and bounce back.
00:10:39And that's such a big thing.
00:10:40And Gerard Mayo said that was what impressed him most so far working with him.
00:10:45And that's such a big thing for a rookie quarterback.
00:10:47If you're going to start him right away or early in his career, like there's going to
00:10:51be some down games.
00:10:52There's going to be some bad moments, especially on a team that might not be competing for
00:10:57a super bowl.
00:10:58So the ability that, you know, he can take the bullets, he can bounce back.
00:11:02We saw it a lot at UNC, even some of those late games, like the Clemson, the North Carolina
00:11:05state game where it didn't start great, but he's still out there competing.
00:11:09Like he's, he's wired like that.
00:11:12So I think if you do send them out there, like he can take the bullets early and still
00:11:16bounce back and still be fine from a mental standpoint, which is big if you are sending
00:11:20them out there.
00:11:22And can we address one of the comments before we get to our ad read?
00:11:25No line, if the O-line is okay, then I don't think the O-line matters.
00:11:30It's whether or not Drake, again, I kind of mentioned the fundamentals.
00:11:34I think it's, and this is why I don't think this decision is going to be made or even
00:11:38be close until we get to training camp and pads come on, you joint practice preseason
00:11:42where you can see an actual live pass rush and how it affects him.
00:11:47One, I think actually Drake may can elevate an average O-line more than Jacoby Brissett.
00:11:51Jacoby Brissett's like 230, between 230, 240 pounds.
00:11:55There's only so much he can really do to elude the pass rush.
00:11:58I think Drake may one has the feel like you saw at UNC.
00:12:01I don't think, I hope he'll never play behind an offensive line as bad as he was playing
00:12:05behind at UNC.
00:12:06And he was able to make them look good by sensing pressure, drifting away, sometimes
00:12:10a little too much, which is one of the things you want to get them under control.
00:12:13I think his ability to maneuver the pocket, make plays with his legs.
00:12:17I think the offensive line should at least be solid.
00:12:20I think especially if you have a winning city, so when David Andrews on the interior, that's
00:12:24really good.
00:12:25Then Shooks and Caden Wallace, if they're just average, I think he can handle those.
00:12:29So I just, I keep seeing, don't put me out there if the line is bad.
00:12:32If it were putrid like last year where you have tackles who can lose in under two seconds,
00:12:37that's a different story where it's literally like his livelihood, where it's like a Bryce
00:12:40Young situation.
00:12:41You can't protect him.
00:12:42But one, I think the scheme is going to protect him in the way that plays are called in the
00:12:47way you have extra protection, max protection on play action.
00:12:50But I don't think that the offensive line is going to dictate whether or not Drake May
00:12:54plays.
00:12:55So let me ask you this.
00:12:56What if it is as bad as last year?
00:12:59If it's as bad as last year, then I, a lot of things went wrong.
00:13:02And to be fair, like last year, all the tackles got hurt and I guess that's part of the consideration.
00:13:07But the bottom line is, I think as long as you know, you can put Drake May out there
00:13:11and even if the pressure is bad, he's not going to be sailing throws.
00:13:14And I don't really think he made a lot of terrible decisions.
00:13:17Again, I always point to his turnover worthy play rate.
00:13:19It was less than 2% like around the same area as Jaden Daniels who gets all this credit
00:13:24for being a smart decision maker.
00:13:26Um, if it's truly like horrendous, maybe that's a consideration, but I just don't see it being
00:13:32that bad.
00:13:33Like you have actual people who've started in their careers unlike last year, we got
00:13:37Darian Lowe and Calvin Anderson who've been career backups.
00:13:39Well, you might have a rookie right guard.
00:13:44Your left tackle hasn't played left tackle in the NFL.
00:13:47So you don't necessarily have guys, right?
00:13:50He's never played left tackle.
00:13:51Oh, left tackle.
00:13:52Yeah, I guess.
00:13:53But still, if they move Mike on when he went inside, you have a rookie, right?
00:13:56I guess here's my point.
00:13:57Like, I think I'm with you in that you can't wait for it to be perfect because it's not
00:14:01going to be perfect.
00:14:02It's not.
00:14:03And it's an unrealistic thing.
00:14:05But it can't be so bad that he doesn't have time to develop anything and just starts,
00:14:12you know, bad habits and all that.
00:14:14So I think what's going to happen is they're going to take the first four or five weeks
00:14:19of the regular season, like they did last year to figure out what their best five is.
00:14:23And you just, I don't think you can have that many pieces in front of a rookie quarterback.
00:14:27To me, that's the timeline for Drake May.
00:14:30When do they settle on their best five?
00:14:33And that could, it could be week one.
00:14:35Maybe they get it done in the preseason.
00:14:36I think realistically, it's probably a couple of weeks into the season because I don't want
00:14:39to have, you know, we get to week five and we're all tweeting out that, oh, you know,
00:14:45this will be Drake May's fifth start.
00:14:47It's the fifth different offensive line combination he's played behind.
00:14:49Like that's not good either because not only is he not being protected in that sense, that's
00:14:55also a whole other layer of preparation he has to go through that you kind of just want
00:14:59to take some stuff off his plate as a rookie later on in his career.
00:15:01It's going to be something he has to deal with.
00:15:04You don't want him to have to deal with it right now.
00:15:06So that's my timeline.
00:15:07It's not necessarily to wait till the offensive line is perfect because I think the offensive
00:15:10line is going to be an issue all year, but can you at least settle on your best five?
00:15:17What happened?
00:15:18What?
00:15:19My face?
00:15:20I just don't think Taylor liked that take.
00:15:21Oh, okay.
00:15:22I just, I just think the offensive line stuff's a little, I understand the trepidation about
00:15:27the tackles.
00:15:28One, like what you're talking about, like while they try to find the right combination,
00:15:32that also goes down to play calling.
00:15:34Like if you are calling plays where the tackles are on islands like 10 times a game and Drake
00:15:39may have to hold onto the ball, then I think you're doing him a disservice for sure.
00:15:43But I do think there's going to be a lot of run, a lot of play action screens and things
00:15:46like that.
00:15:47Just based on what we saw last year, when you go through five different offensive tackles,
00:15:52five different quarterbacks, you know, I think a lot of that's going to have to do with Alex
00:15:56Van Pelt also protecting his young quarterback.
00:15:59But I think if you end up having the Mike and when you city, so David Andrews interior,
00:16:02I think that's already a really good foundation.
00:16:05The trepidation with Caden Wallace starting wasn't that he had to play.
00:16:08It was that he might have to play left tackle.
00:16:09He's a right tackle.
00:16:10I definitely feel better about his transition and choose athletically.
00:16:14He's more than good enough to play left tackle it, the technique and everything for sure.
00:16:18That might be a struggle, but that's one of those things again, where I need to see him
00:16:22struggle before I really start hitting the panic button.
00:16:24Cause from what I've seen, he's solid, man, he's not great or anything, but I don't think
00:16:27he's going to be like a vicarian low level where he's losing immediately.
00:16:30And it's like, we can't survive this way.
00:16:32I guess, look, if, if, if that's their best five, great.
00:16:36If they figure it out week one, then sure.
00:16:39I just remember last year we knew what their best five was and they didn't put it on the
00:16:42field like until four or five weeks into the season, you know, obviously different coaching
00:16:46staff, but I just, I, I have that group figured out because, and this isn't just a Patriots
00:16:54thing by the way, either.
00:16:56Every team does this.
00:16:57And, and Matt light talked about this when he was on games with names last week is that
00:17:00because of the lack of contact in practices, because the lack of padded practices, because
00:17:05of the lack of preseason games, because a lot of guys don't play in preseason games,
00:17:08you really can't truly evaluate an offensive line.
00:17:11You can evaluate them individually, but you can't really evaluate them as a group until
00:17:15you get to the regular season.
00:17:16So a lot of teams, you know, unless you're returning five guys from last year, a lot
00:17:21of teams are still kind of carrying over the position battles and carrying over the
00:17:25questions of their offensive line in a September.
00:17:27This is not unique to the Patriots.
00:17:29Let me be clear about that, but what is unique to the Patriots, they have a rookie quarterback.
00:17:34So I'm just saying, don't expose Drake made of that part of it.
00:17:38Once you get that figured out, I think the offensive line will be good enough and Taylor
00:17:41to your point.
00:17:42He's more athletic.
00:17:43You know, he can handle himself better.
00:17:45Alex Van Pelt's going to do a lot with the play calling to help him out at that point,
00:17:49because you can't wait for it to be perfect because it's not going to be perfect, but
00:17:52just get the, get the puzzle pieces sorted out before you put them in there is really
00:17:56my big concern.
00:17:57It can't be the league's worst past block win rate again, which you kind of saw yesterday.
00:18:03There was like a two play sequence.
00:18:04And again, they're not in pads.
00:18:06There's no threat of the run game, right?
00:18:08So, but there was like pressure immediately off the right edge and Drake may had to like
00:18:13fall back and then he like short on the throw.
00:18:15And then the next play, there was immediate pressure again, and it might've been a route
00:18:19error on Juju or something, but then he throws the interception to his easy hern.
00:18:23But so that's like two immediate pressures looked like last year.
00:18:27And then, you know, you're, you're putting Drake may in a bad spot.
00:18:29So it can't be, it can't be like that if may is going to be out there.
00:18:33And also with the offensive line combinations, it's nice that we saw the Mike and when you
00:18:37Caden Wallace combination at first, they were running with the twos the first time we saw
00:18:40it and then next practice they're with the one.
00:18:43So it feels like they are making a very concentrated effort to figure out what that unit is, get
00:18:47them on the field and have them rep together.
00:18:50I was hoping, I was expecting that to kind of take a little more time to develop.
00:18:54But the fact that they kind of expedited that process, cause we all looked at it and we're
00:18:57like, wait, that actually makes a lot of sense.
00:18:59If you kick in one who back inside and just have Caden Wallace play where he's already
00:19:02played, that was pretty cool.
00:19:03So we'll see in training camp.
00:19:04And again, once the pads come on, that's what's most important.
00:19:07But yeah, I'm consciously optimistic.
00:19:11Shocker.
00:19:12Um, but yeah, we'll see.
00:19:14We'll see.
00:19:15All right, let's, uh, here's from some friends and then get into some of the other skill
00:19:18positions.

00:20:41Last minute tickets.
00:20:42Lowest price.
00:20:43Guaranteed.
00:20:44There's just one more thing in the chat really quickly because this is something that makes
00:20:49sense is when you're turning in the most expensive guard, if he kicks inside, he's still not
00:20:54being paid like the highest guard guards got paid like a ridiculous amount of money this
00:20:58off season.
00:20:59So I just kind of want to put that out there.
00:21:01I don't think his contract was bad if you end up moving him inside.
00:21:04I think he is the caliber of player that deserves, if anything, he's kind of cheap, especially
00:21:07for somebody who has tackle flexibility.
00:21:09So right guards, Chris Lindstrom is at a 20.5 AAV.
00:21:15Robert Hunt's at 20.
00:21:16Zach Martin's at 18.
00:21:18What's on when to like 16, I think something like that.
00:21:21Yeah.
00:21:22So, um, oh, 19.
00:21:24Okay.
00:21:25So he'd be, um, he'd be the third highest paid guard behind Robert Hunt and Chris Lindstrom.
00:21:29Third highest paid right guard.
00:21:30Actually.
00:21:31If you go to left guard, Landon Dickerson and Quentin Ellison are both over 20.
00:21:34So he's like a top five paid guard.
00:21:36I would also say like, look, is it ideal that you paid him to be a tackle?
00:21:43You have to move into guard for your best five.
00:21:45No, but also I would so much rather them say we need him at right guard for a best five.
00:21:52So that's where he's going to play versus, well, we can't block anything unless you move
00:21:56Michael and Winnie back inside, but we paid him as a tackle.
00:21:59So aw shucks, I guess we're screwed.
00:22:01Like he's here now playing where you need him.
00:22:04He's here now.
00:22:05Just you got to use them to the best.
00:22:07What's best for the team.
00:22:08And I have a question about like the flexibility of the run game when he's a guard, but in
00:22:12past pro he's one of the best past protecting guards in the NFL.
00:22:15That's why I think he has like pro bowl level of play.
00:22:19If you just like look at him versus other guys as a past protector.
00:22:23So yeah, I don't really mind if he's a highly paid guard because he was just like an okay
00:22:26paid tackle.
00:22:27It was a bargain when you looked at it, when he was playing right tackle.
00:22:30I think he's like your ninth highest paid right tackle, which obviously left tackles
00:22:36or he's probably like top 15 in that regard, but no, it's not like a gross overpayment
00:22:40for guard or anything.
00:22:41I think that's pretty much it for the offensive line, but we wanted to cover, right?
00:22:45So we can just move right to receivers.
00:22:48Interesting camp, I would say for the wide receiver position or interesting spring for
00:22:51the wide receiver position.
00:22:53You know, some guys we wanted to see, we didn't see as much.
00:22:55Davon Baker was limited for a good amount of the spring.
00:22:58Some guys we didn't expect to see so much if we saw a ton of Juju Schuster, Jalen Rager.
00:23:04So I guess, I mean, we can kind of start wherever, just where are you at Taylor with the wide
00:23:08receiver position?
00:23:09What's your biggest takeaway either from the group or an individual player from the wide
00:23:13receivers from the spring?
00:23:14Jalen pokes a dog, man, you had four touchdowns in the past two practices.
00:23:21I really, the fact that Drake may was telling us, he said, Hey, just give me a chance.
00:23:26I'll make a play.
00:23:27That kind of mentality I really like, because I don't know how many guys in this receiving
00:23:30core can have that mentality and you're like, Oh yeah, no, I believe it.
00:23:34Maybe pop, but you saw, especially in scoring territory where margin fair is really slim
00:23:39as we've seen, because they spent a lot of time in the little red zone, you've taken
00:23:43advantage of those one-on-one matchups.
00:23:45And one, I think even going through drills, like when they're doing, you know, throws
00:23:49at the back of the end zone, you see the catch radius, the fact that you never see his hands
00:23:54kind of close to his body.
00:23:55He's always fully extending for passes, really strong hands, the footwork and some of the
00:24:01route technique.
00:24:02Like there was this one route in the, with a run of the back of the end zone, kind of
00:24:06fake one way and go the other.
00:24:08And there was one where his head went the opposite way that he was breaking, but it
00:24:12was so fast that you could completely see a defensive back biting on that.
00:24:16And then just him getting wide open.
00:24:18It was on air, but it's just a little things you see when they are going through the individual
00:24:22drills, I think are really promising.
00:24:23And then obviously it's translating into the plays because you need some of these young
00:24:27guys to step up and I'll let somebody else get in the booty.
00:24:31And Jayvon Baker did do it, but then we didn't really see him again.
00:24:35But the fact that these young guys are making plays the way you really needed them to stood
00:24:38out for me.
00:24:39And yeah, Jalen Polk, he's just an outstanding catcher of the football and we got to see
00:24:44that.
00:24:45Brian.
00:24:46Yeah.
00:24:47I mean, that was the way he came on the last like two days at minicamp was really exciting
00:24:50because it was kind of a quieter start.
00:24:52And I said, you know, not to sound an alarm, but I was like, he's more of a physical guy.
00:24:57Maybe he'll shine with the pads.
00:24:58Come on.
00:24:59And then he was just like, screw that.
00:25:00I'm going to have a nasty two days of mandatory minicamp.
00:25:03So that was exciting.
00:25:04But I'll say like we talked so much about that fifth and maybe six wide receiver spot
00:25:09that could be up for grabs here.
00:25:12Doesn't feel like anyone like really got out to a good head start there throughout the
00:25:16spring practices.
00:25:17Right?
00:25:18So we talked about Juju.
00:25:19Jalen Rager had like a busy day Monday and then he comes back Wednesday and like drops
00:25:23the first pass coming his way.
00:25:25KJ Osborne even had some drops.
00:25:27We got the full Taekwon Thornton experience where he starts really strong and then he
00:25:31falls off and now he wasn't even at yesterday's practice.
00:25:34So who knows what happened there?
00:25:36But maybe Keishon booty is gaining some steam because he was, he ended on a, on a, the highest
00:25:42note out of anyone yesterday, like three touchdowns, a couple of really nice acrobatic was there.
00:25:49So that's a young guy.
00:25:50He's on that rookie deal.
00:25:51He had a ton of, a ton of potential coming from LSU.
00:25:54So maybe that's someone who kind of builds some momentum in that fifth or if they keep
00:25:59a six wide receiver spot there.
00:26:01Yeah.
00:26:02I just, I, the one thing I disagree with there is I actually think Jalen Rager had himself
00:26:07a solid spring for what he needed to do.
00:26:09And I always talk about this time of year, the performance obviously matters, but you
00:26:14can put some real weight on just who's involved, who's out there, who's, who are the coaches
00:26:19getting ready?
00:26:20Who does it look like they have a plan for?
00:26:21And I would say with Jalen Rager, it looks like they have a plan for him.
00:26:24They wanted to get him reps.
00:26:25They wanted to get him exposure and that's a good sign.
00:26:29And he's a guy, when you talk about a fifth or six receiver, a guy that is going to have
00:26:34to contribute in other ways.
00:26:35And we saw him in town on special teams where Juju and Taekwon Thornton are off to the side
00:26:39during that period.
00:26:40So I think Jalen Rager had a, had a really encouraging spring.
00:26:44I guess I wouldn't say it a great spring just in terms of performance, but you know, encouraging
00:26:50for him making the roster.
00:26:51I put out my post spring Ross projection this morning, 98,000 sports hub.com actually put
00:26:55it up at like 2 am last night.
00:26:58And uh, you, I have Rager on, uh, I hope you just hit, I hope you just hit publish at 2
00:27:04am and you weren't actually writing it at two.
00:27:06No, I got home and wrote it.
00:27:08Oh, the red carpet ran longer than I thought it would.
00:27:12What I was going to try to write it during a break yesterday.
00:27:13And then I went on Felger and Mavs.
00:27:14You can listen to that hour on 98,000 sports hub.com.
00:27:17Matt swore.
00:27:18Um, but no, I got home.
00:27:20I had to write two more Brady things.
00:27:22And then that before I went to bed grind, you heard Tom, you heard Tom talk last night.
00:27:26It's all about commitment, dedication, consistency, true.
00:27:30Like I was going to come home and not, not hit the grind after hearing him speak, but
00:27:33we'll get to that.
00:27:34Um, yeah, I think Rager had the most encouraging spring in terms of roster spot, uh, of any
00:27:39of those guys.
00:27:40I think he's in great shape.
00:27:41And then my other takeaway, Taylor, to what you said, I mean, Jalen Polk, I don't know
00:27:46that like when I watch him and listen to this whole take before you react, I don't know
00:27:51when I watch him, there's like this one ability, one trait I look at that I'm like, wow, he's
00:27:57like amazing at this one thing, but I also don't really see a weakness either.
00:28:03I don't really see one thing where I'm like, man, that, that could be a problem.
00:28:07You know, that, you know, route running speed, yeah, ball skills, whatever I'm like, that's
00:28:12scary.
00:28:13No, he's just a really solid, well-rounded player.
00:28:17And those guys, those guys translate, those guys translate in the NFL.
00:28:20They do.
00:28:21And if we go back to what we were talking about before the draft, they weren't going
00:28:25to hit every big major need this off season quarterback tackle receiver.
00:28:30They weren't going to be able to home run all three of those.
00:28:32And it was about bridging the gap and building for the future.
00:28:35So when I look at a guy like Jalen Polk, what I continue to see is he's going to be a pretty
00:28:39good player for them this year.
00:28:41But if we, if they continue the plan, we think they're building right.
00:28:45And next year they go out and they get a DK Metcalf, a Terry McLaurin, a true coverage
00:28:52dictator.
00:28:53And you put that guy opposite Polk and you get Polk one-on-ones, he's going to feast.
00:28:59He's going to be like a high level number two receiver.
00:29:01And to get that where they did makes a ton of sense if you look at it in the, in the
00:29:05multi-year window.
00:29:06So I think, and I know some people might be disappointed to hear that on a second round
00:29:11pick, but like that, and that I'm talking about that as like, I think that's what he
00:29:15can be at least maybe is more, but I think that's what he can be at least.
00:29:18And I think for a lot of Patriots fans, look, anytime they draft a receiver anywhere, our
00:29:23gut reaction now is bust.
00:29:26And so for him to become that player, I think would be very encouraging.
00:29:29And you need those players, especially those three really good wide receivers in today's
00:29:36NFL to compete.
00:29:37So you need those guys.
00:29:39If that is a ceiling is like a really good number two.
00:29:42You're yeah, you're, you're exactly like, this isn't to knock Jalen Polk.
00:29:46I mean, I think he's, he's a guy that's set up to be a factor here.
00:29:50It's just, you know, same thing on the offensive line.
00:29:52Like we've been debating Caden Wallace, left tackle, right tackle.
00:29:55Ideally, Taylor's you've said a number of times, he's your right tackle, the future
00:29:59and you get the left tackle next year.
00:30:00And maybe he's playing left tackle this year is like a stop gap until you get to that guy.
00:30:04Like as much as that annoys me.
00:30:07Yeah.
00:30:08That's the right plan.
00:30:09That's absolutely the right plan.
00:30:11And you, you, you build this thing up over time.
00:30:14So I think Jalen Polk, and then on top of that too, just the way he's shown like leadership
00:30:19and charisma and just kind of being a guy that it seems like other people gravitate
00:30:22towards, even as a rookie, I've been really impressed by him.
00:30:24Um, any other
00:30:25like nitpick with Paul, but I also like the one thing where it's like, wow, is his catch
00:30:30radius in his hands?
00:30:31Like he's just a very good catcher of the football.
00:30:33Yeah.
00:30:34Yeah.
00:30:35And it's like, because he doesn't have the dynamic athleticism and he's still kind of
00:30:37coming along as a route runner, those things matter where if there's a guy on your hip
00:30:41and it's in a really important situation, can Drake may just throw it to him and expect
00:30:45him to catch it.
00:30:46And I feel like he's someone where, yeah, it doesn't really matter the situation.
00:30:49You can put him in that spotlight and he's going to continue to shine.
00:30:53And also real quick, to your point about Rager, I think you're absolutely right.
00:30:56Because one of the reasons that Keishon booty had been so quiet before this is he was pretty
00:31:01much like the third, fourth kind of X receiver was Taekwon Thornton, Jalen Rager.
00:31:06And then he would kind of mix in Taekwon Thornton again, it's, it's really the same script that
00:31:11we've seen where he's inconsistent and sometimes he's not there at all.
00:31:14So that continues and he loses the trust of the coaching staff, who's going to get bumped
00:31:18up to that top spot.
00:31:19It's going to be Jalen Rager.
00:31:20Maybe Javon Baker can try to wrestle it away from him.
00:31:22I hope he can, but I, I agree that Jalen Rager is someone we definitely can't overlook because
00:31:27he brings special teams value and they clearly see him as someone that is near the top of
00:31:32the depth chart that does not exist, but also kind of does exist.
00:31:35All right, while we're on this, anybody want to talk tight ends?
00:31:39Any tight end takes?
00:31:41Oh, Jaheim Bell did shine a few times, especially in the red area.
00:31:45There were some touchdowns he had that were on quick outs, which to me, like I don't put
00:31:49a ton of stock in those cause they're not really contested.
00:31:51I kind of like to see what guys can do in the margin for error is slim, but he had a
00:31:55touchdown.
00:31:56I think it was in the first minicamp practice in the red zone, in the back, that pass that
00:32:00Drake may kind of floated and he went up to get it.
00:32:03I just wanted to see him do something because he's behind two established veterans.
00:32:07You could say three cause Mitchell Wilcox has gotten a good amount of run.
00:32:10I'm even with Michael Petway, Brian, we were talking about it last night where he's getting
00:32:14more reps than I think any of us expected.
00:32:16I kind of, he's been an afterthought, but he's sometimes the sole tight end on the field
00:32:20over like an Austin Hooper who's rarely the only tight end on the field.
00:32:24So for Jaheim Bell to be one of the guys who's really making plays out there is really promising
00:32:28because I wrote about it on CLNS media.
00:32:31He could be a very real steal where tight end athleticism is a pretty good indicator
00:32:36of how good you're going to be.
00:32:37And he is, he's fast.
00:32:39He's a guy who accelerates well.
00:32:41He's also tough, like a difficult guy to reroute.
00:32:44So you really think about him running down the seams on maybe some wheel routes and things
00:32:48like that.
00:32:49So just the fact that he was making some kind of impact, I found promising.
00:32:52Brian.
00:32:53Yeah.
00:32:54I mean, you hit most of it like Jaheim Bell will be excited to watch.
00:32:57I was going to say like Petway, Michael Mitchell Wilcox, they've been using those guys a lot.
00:33:02Even they had like four tight ends on the field at one point yesterday, even so that'll
00:33:07be interesting if they keep four, like if one of these guys can carve out a role or
00:33:13maybe even bump Austin Hooper, like I imagine Austin Hooper is here, but maybe one of those
00:33:20guys has a really good summer there and you get kind of a wildcard dark horse in that
00:33:24tight end room.
00:33:25Yeah.
00:33:26I'd say don't sleep on Wilcox.
00:33:28I have Bell on the roster right now, but Taylor, like you said, I mean, he's just out there
00:33:31a ton.
00:33:32He's been out there a ton in the spring.
00:33:33They need a blocker.
00:33:34They need a blocking tight end.
00:33:36He's maybe a guy they can get on the practice squad and just elevate as they need.
00:33:40But it's their new Matt Sokol.
00:33:42Yeah, basically.
00:33:43Kind of.
00:33:44I'll say, I'll say this.
00:33:45I don't think that a padded practice will be kind to Mitchell Wilcox just so he doesn't
00:33:49get on the bell tape.
00:33:50Dude, watching him play.
00:33:51I was like, Oh, I'm, I don't know.
00:33:53Usually you can tell how I feel about a player based on like what I don't say.
00:33:57If I only talk about the role and don't really talk about their play, it's pretty, it's usually
00:34:01a pretty good indicator that I'm not too, you know, moved.
00:34:05I don't think he's, I think he's, his effort's great, but he's just not a very, uh, physically
00:34:11dominant player.
00:34:12He's barely done anything as a receiver.
00:34:14So they are using him.
00:34:15I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that he's a veteran who's been around for
00:34:18a long time and can just adjust quickly.
00:34:20But like, yeah, I don't think that, uh, we're going to be too high on him once things get
00:34:26a little more physical.
00:34:27Hope I'm wrong, but just based on what I've seen from his NFL tape.
00:34:29All right.
00:34:30Makes sense.
00:34:31Let's hear from one more group of friends and then we'll do the defense and get into
00:34:35Brady.
00:34:36Yes, sir.

00:35:36Pick more, pick less.
00:35:38It's that easy.
00:35:40All right.
00:35:44So the defense, how much should people actually watch the defense this spring?
00:35:48I felt I was so lasered in on what Drake May was doing.
00:35:51The offense was doing it helped kind as we got later on and it was more 11 on 11.
00:35:57But look, they didn't add that many players defensively.
00:36:00They didn't lose that many players defensively.
00:36:03It's very similar to it's, you know, it's a very similar group than last year and they
00:36:09look ready to go.
00:36:10They look turned up and ready to go.
00:36:11I mean, there's still some questions.
00:36:13I think cornerback was probably the biggest discussion this spring and especially on the
00:36:18boundary, what's it going to look like beyond Christian Gonzalez is Jonathan Jones moving
00:36:21out there.
00:36:22If not, you know, we've talked about Alex Austin as a guy who stood out.
00:36:25I say a bold and got a ton of run in mini camp.
00:36:27We've even seen like a ZZ Hearn start to make plays.
00:36:30So that I think it's going to be a very competitive battle, but I talk to talk to get very much
00:36:38into the defense other than they're still good.
00:36:40Like I don't know how much new we saw from the defense this spring.
00:36:45They looked like a unit that has been together for a while and had continuity personnel and
00:36:50the coaching staff.
00:36:51Right.
00:36:52So you hear them talk about like they can start ahead of the page almost, which is good.
00:36:56But yeah, I'd always laugh because, you know, during the periods that we couldn't like record
00:37:01at practice, everyone would be huddled over by the quarterbacks and receivers because
00:37:05they'd be right in front of us.
00:37:06So then like the defense of the field is empty.
00:37:08So we got to see a little bit more.
00:37:10As you said, they got into a little more 11 on 11 is the last kind of two days of mandatory
00:37:14mini camp and they look good.
00:37:16So I think they're probably where you want them to be at, you know, June 10th, June 12th
00:37:22here in the spring.
00:37:23Yeah, I think what stood out to me most was really how people were deployed, especially
00:37:28in the secondary.
00:37:29Like Jalen Hawkins was not someone I thought was going to have a significant role on defense.
00:37:33I was honestly hoping Marte Mapu would take that step forward and really solidify that
00:37:38third safety role where he's more comfortable maybe on the back end so you can use peppers
00:37:42and dugger your line of scrimmage more.
00:37:45We've really seen Mapu mostly as a dime linebacker.
00:37:47And I did say once Mack Wilson signed with the Cardinals that that's Marte Mapu's job.
00:37:52That's what he should be.
00:37:53I was hoping he could be deep on early downs, but really in those like big nickel packages
00:37:57where they have dugger or peppers in the slot, it's been Jalen Hawkins really is the free
00:38:01safety.
00:38:02So I may need to go a little bit deeper into his tape to see how he's been in that role.
00:38:06But that stood out to me, the cornerback role opposite Christian Gonzalez.
00:38:11It's still up for grabs.
00:38:12Looks like Alex Dawson and Marco Wilson are really fighting for it.
00:38:15Alex Dawson, I will say, I don't want it to be all sunshining rainbows because he has
00:38:19given up some catches, but it's not anything where you're worried about him.
00:38:23It's always been competitive.
00:38:25The things he gives up are mostly underneath, which also happened last year.
00:38:28I feel like as he gets more used to the NFL and gets more confidence, maybe those will
00:38:32be contested a little bit more.
00:38:34But it's been him, Marco Wilson.
00:38:36I feel like they just don't really throw to him that often.
00:38:38So there weren't a ton of moments for him that necessarily stood out.
00:38:41But I like that competition going on.
00:38:43Bolden has been the slot cornerback, as EZ Hearn did get some run in there.
00:38:47But I mean, based on last season, unless he makes a huge jump, I don't really see him
00:38:50playing a big role on the defense.
00:38:52But Bolden is a guy where Mayo said he thinks he's really a boundary corner, but in college
00:38:56he played literally all over the secondary.
00:38:59So seeing that they're confident enough in him to give him, we know how difficult that
00:39:02slot role is.
00:39:04For all the crap people want to give Miles Bryant, he did a lot for the Patriots secondary,
00:39:08kicking back to safety at times, being a reliable run defender, a coverage guy who's
00:39:13in zone techniques and man techniques.
00:39:16And Bolden's bigger, like you don't want him against the shifty guys necessarily.
00:39:19But again, Miles Bryant wasn't very shifty either.
00:39:22Sometimes you just want a physical presence who's reliable against the run.
00:39:25We don't really know how bold it is in that regard, but I really did like seeing him get
00:39:28a lot of runs.
00:39:29So yeah, you know, Christian Gonzalez, we know he's going to be involved.
00:39:33John Jones and Marcus Jones, that's going to be interesting to see how this whole lineup
00:39:36shakes up once they get back.
00:39:38Because Mayo did say their depth at slot hasn't been great, which is why Bolden's been there.
00:39:42So let's address this, Taylor, because it's perfect.
00:39:45How did Jonathan Jones get demoted?
00:39:47Moving him back to the slot isn't a demotion.
00:39:49He's a slot corner.
00:39:50The whole reason he was playing the boundaries because they had nobody like that was by desperation.
00:39:54I wouldn't say he's being demoted, being moved back inside.
00:39:57But yeah, I think you laid it all out very well.
00:40:00You know, Marcus Jones will be a factor there too.
00:40:02Sean Wade even could.
00:40:03I mean, everybody, you take any corner on the roster and pick it in a day out of day
00:40:08where they look like a, you know, rosterable kind of player baseline.
00:40:13So I think that's going to be like Mikey Victor had some good days.
00:40:16I like Mikey Victor.
00:40:18I do six, two long arms, great athlete.
00:40:22They're working him at Gunner, which is encouraging.
00:40:24He may have to be one of these guys that starts on the practice squad, makes his way to the
00:40:27roster, but I physically he's a Patriots cornerback.
00:40:32Physically he has all the tools of a Patriots boundary cornerback.
00:40:35So another guy that, you know, you keep a, you keep an eye on one more on the defense
00:40:40too.
00:40:41Not in the secondary.
00:40:42If we're good, everybody's good with their secondary takes.
00:40:44Wow.
00:40:45He on white looks ready to take a leap.
00:40:48He tried males book highly of him and he was again, no pads, but he was a force in practice.
00:40:54He was a problem.
00:40:55They were using them all different ways of standing up, hand down all that.
00:40:59He could be ready to, to, to make a jump.
00:41:01Yeah.
00:41:03So look at how he's deployed.
00:41:04I know there's been some questions of like, what is he exactly?
00:41:05Well, we've seen, it seems like when they're in four down fronts or some of their odd fronts
00:41:09on early downs, that's where you see him on the edge, but in their pass rush groupings,
00:41:13it's been like Dietrich wise outside and Keon white kind of in that like nose tackle, sometimes
00:41:18three technique roles.
00:41:20So it seems like they see him and that's how he was using college.
00:41:23I'm pretty sure on early downs, he was an outside guy defending the run while I'm standing
00:41:27up.
00:41:28I feel like, so he could see better and then they kick him inside as a pass rusher.
00:41:30So for anybody wondering how they're going to use him, that's kind of how he was used
00:41:34last year as well.
00:41:35But I think in pass rush packages, we'll see him kick inside and on the other ones, he's
00:41:39more of an edge guy, but definitely looks like somebody they have big plans for.
00:41:43The other kind of pass rusher who was really involved was a, and I have to figure out how
00:41:48to say his last name.
00:41:49Oh shit.
00:41:50Oh Shane.
00:41:51It's a menace.
00:41:52It's a menace.
00:41:53Yeah.
00:41:54Who like, and Uche wasn't really out there so much throughout the spring, you know, Judon
00:41:57only showed up the last two days, but he was out there a lot with like projected starters.
00:42:04And that's someone like, he comes with Drew Wilkins, who's their outside linebackers coach
00:42:07from New York.
00:42:08So they have some familiarity there with him.
00:42:11So that's kind of a guy who, who maybe could carve out a role there throughout training
00:42:15camp as well.
00:42:16And looking at his tape, he did a lot for the giants.
00:42:19Like he's a run defender.
00:42:20He dropped into coverage, played inside, outside.
00:42:23He's just like a perfect Patriots type linebacker.
00:42:25So yeah, that's another good one.
00:42:26I feel like he could definitely at least be in the rotation.
00:42:29I had him as one of my last guys off.
00:42:32So I, I had him off the rocks cause they just have so much depth of linebacker, an injury
00:42:37or two.
00:42:38I think he gets on, or maybe they get them on the practice squad and he becomes a factor
00:42:41later on.
00:42:42A real quick special teams start with the easy stuff.
00:42:46Bryce Beringer looks great.
00:42:48Joe Cardona looks great.
00:42:49No issues there.
00:42:50You're set.
00:42:51They're going to need to add another kicker.
00:42:53I mean, I don't mean replace Chad Ryland with Joey Sly.
00:42:56I mean, I think they need Jake Bates, another kid.
00:43:01Yeah.
00:43:02They need to go get one of these UFL kickers because, um, excuse me, uh, Ryland was inconsistent.
00:43:08I think he was 15 of 19, 14 of 19 for the spring, but two of those kicks went directly
00:43:13over an upright.
00:43:15Two more were just inside the uprights.
00:43:18He got iced by Gerard Mayo yesterday and Joey Sly wasn't much better.
00:43:22And the fact he got limited opportunities tells me the team wasn't serious about him
00:43:25as a competitor.
00:43:27I think they, it's either going to be, they're going to go and get a UFL guy.
00:43:30I guess they could do either of these and, or they're going to do what they're going
00:43:34to be on the other side of the Nick Fulk thing this year, where some team is going to have
00:43:38two really good kickers in camp or a really good kicker and a rookie and choose the rookie.
00:43:43And they're going to try to get a kicker.
00:43:45That's another roster.
00:43:46If you want to check out my Ross projection, not 85 sports of.com, I have kicker TBD as
00:43:51in not currently on the roster.
00:43:55And we've talked about it.
00:43:56Like, I don't think we've ever seen him do the end of practice field goal attempts.
00:44:00I think he's ever made all of them.
00:44:03And a lot of the time, not this year, he might've last year, not this year.
00:44:07And then there's also like in between those, there's at least one or two where we're like,
00:44:11did that make it in?
00:44:12Like it's never just boom down the middle, boom down the middle and Nick, no one's perfect,
00:44:16but it just isn't really reassuring that he's consistently inconsistent or at least
00:44:22like it's hard to have a lot of confidence.
00:44:26You know, he's an easy guy to root for just like a person, the guy in the locker room,
00:44:29but just purely based on what we've seen on the field, there's gotta be an additional
00:44:34investment.
00:44:35I agree.
00:44:36And I know there was some report about teams being interested in kickers in these other
00:44:39leagues and the Patriots weren't one of them.
00:44:42I hope maybe they're just waiting or something like that because they're, uh, they need more
00:44:47talent.
00:44:48That's fine.
00:44:49Yeah.
00:44:50I mean, that was a good way to put it.
00:44:51Like there's just not much confidence anytime he's kicking Chad Ryland, like that it's going
00:44:55to actually go in and, and sly wasn't even that consistent as well.
00:44:59Like he, he made them, but they were, I think one, like hit the flag of the upright.
00:45:04I don't know if you just said that, sorry, Barth, but, um, yeah, I wouldn't be surprised
00:45:08if the week one kicker is not on the roster right now.
00:45:12So they, that's something that, you know, they have five, six weeks still training camp.
00:45:17The USFL ends, I believe mid June next week, this week, this week, this week is the championship
00:45:23Saturday.
00:45:24So, so they can start adding maybe some of those guys, uh, sometime soon here.
00:45:29Also I see a comment about you slide kickoff cause he's built like a linebacker.
00:45:34He's Jack for sure.
00:45:36Like when we were doing the community service, I looked at him, I thought he was a trainer,
00:45:39but he's also tiny.
00:45:40Like he doesn't, I don't think he's going to cover a whole lot of ground.
00:45:43So I don't think that you're choosing Joey sly over Chad Ryland because of his physique.
00:45:46I think both guys are on the pretty small side and you don't really want them being
00:45:50your last line of defense either way.
00:45:52Yeah.
00:45:53Yeah.
00:45:54I'm with you.
00:45:55Uh, UFL kickers are free agents, but not until the league's done.
00:45:58So it'll be a bidding war.
00:46:00I think it'll be a little bit of a frenzy to sign these guys.
00:46:03All right.
00:46:04Any last thoughts from the spring thoughts on maybe the coaching staff,
00:46:08we can say this too, because Barth, we talked about this half the linebackers want to kick
00:46:13Jelani to buy his kicking background was rugby.
00:46:17That's where he knows.
00:46:18I saw that.
00:46:19Yeah.
00:46:20Somewhat kick.
00:46:21So maybe I know Mayo said, no, that they're not experimenting with that right now, but
00:46:24maybe we get out there in six weeks and Jelani to buy is kicking off or they have something,
00:46:30something new going on there.
00:46:32Well they got tied.
00:46:33It's time now to get in the lab.
00:46:34So yeah, we will, uh, we will see what happens.
00:46:39Um, all right, Brady, Brady ceremony.
00:46:43Hmm.
00:46:44Unbelievable.
00:46:45I mean, just a great job by the Patriots, a plus, um, you know, it was in, in, in Brady
00:46:52said it, he was right.
00:46:53As much as it was a celebration of Tom Brady and it was a celebration of Tom Brady.
00:46:56I mean, from the beginning, Jay-Z PSA, man, I chills like instantly.
00:47:03But it was a celebration of the 20 years that, that we all experienced.
00:47:10And, you know, one of the biggest highlights of the night to me was Randy Moss started
00:47:15talking.
00:47:16Couldn't even, you know, just barely got into it and got like a minute long standing ovation.
00:47:22Started tearing up.
00:47:23That's a guy that didn't even win a title here.
00:47:26And I think a real chance for the, you know, the players and the fans, and in some cases
00:47:33the coaches and the fans, Bill got like a five minute ovation.
00:47:36Um, there's some real closure there on a lot of things, but you know, if you follow the
00:47:41Patriots during the Donny Sierra, it, it, there were a lot of emotions there.
00:47:45There were a lot of emotions.
00:47:46It was a very, um, I don't know, I haven't felt that way in a little bit, haven't felt
00:47:51that way in a little bit.
00:47:52I enjoyed it, but there was just something cool about the enormity of it.
00:47:56You know, you had the red carpet, there's helicopters flying in and out.
00:47:59It was like a full on game day.
00:48:01The stadium's packed, you're walking around.
00:48:03You know, I went up to, to do founder of massive past place, like three o'clock.
00:48:07Everything's full.
00:48:08Bars are full.
00:48:09Restaurants are full.
00:48:10It's like former Patriots walking around, but like that Tom Brady did all that.
00:48:13I remember like my first, cause we can kind of turn this into just us talking about Tom
00:48:17Brady too.
00:48:18And this is something I kept going back to last night.
00:48:20Um, and I've talked about this before, but you know, I fell in love with the game of
00:48:26football because of the 2001 Patriots and Tom Brady.
00:48:30And if, you know, if, if they don't win that, I, I, my dad has a joke that, you know, he
00:48:38texted me, uh, when they won 53, when they won the last one, like a picture of Brady
00:48:43on the stage.
00:48:44And it was like, think about it.
00:48:45If not for this guy, you would have been like, no offense to English majors, but he's like,
00:48:49or marketing majors, like you would have been a marketing major somewhere like, you
00:48:52know, whatever.
00:48:53So, um, Tom Brady had a profound effect on my life as did a lot of those players that
00:48:58spoke last night and they'll never know, like Brady will never know the individual impact
00:49:04he had.
00:49:05I'm sure he knows he had a great impact, but the individual person to person impact he
00:49:07had for a lot of people and Randy Moss will never know.
00:49:10And Bill Belichick will never know.
00:49:11They couldn't know.
00:49:12But last night I think was an opportunity for them to see that.
00:49:16That to me was just an awesome kind of message was that, and Brady talking to at the end
00:49:23and really talked at length about the fans.
00:49:26And I think maybe we didn't know what an impact we had on him.
00:49:28He's Tom Brady.
00:49:29How much can you possibly think about us?
00:49:31And I, that to me was the overarching, that was the great part of the night was I felt
00:49:36there was real communication between Tom Brady and Bill Belichick and the players and the
00:49:43fan base.
00:49:44And that's what that should have been about.
00:49:46And that's what it was about.
00:49:47And so that we can get into specifics, but just that's kind of, that was the thought
00:49:50I walked away with and it's, it's the thought I woke up with this morning and I'm glad,
00:49:55I'm glad that that's the message I came away with.
00:49:57And I think other people came away with because that's what that event is supposed to be.
00:50:01Yeah, we were, I mean, me and Taylor were talking to Mike Reese after it and he kind
00:50:06of brought that up.
00:50:07How Brady was like, he's like, I wish I had more time to like talk to every single one
00:50:12of you.
00:50:13And it felt real.
00:50:14Like it felt like really like it was coming from his heart and, and he really meant it.
00:50:18So I thought his speech was awesome.
00:50:21It was like emotional, it was humorous and he just hit on so many great parts.
00:50:27Bill just such an amazing storyteller, which we knew, but getting, hearing that standing
00:50:32ovation for him was, I mean, three or four minutes, he couldn't even get a word in just
00:50:36beside, every time he said, thank you, the crowd just re-erupted and he obviously deserved
00:50:43that moment.
00:50:44I was, I was happy he was there and got that.
00:50:45And the Randy one too, it was unbelievable because that was a guy three years here.
00:50:50It didn't end great.
00:50:51He didn't even get a rain, which, you know, he's probably still ticked about and to get
00:50:56that, you know, applause and get that standing ovation that obviously you saw the tears that
00:51:01meant so much for him and he deserved it too, because it was an incredible couple of years
00:51:05here.
00:51:06So just awesome seeing all those guys back.
00:51:09Tom, Tom really delivered on the speech.
00:51:12We get the statue coming next year.
00:51:14We get 12 retired, which I think we all figured that would never be worn again, but yeah,
00:51:20it was a, it was a very well done, well done night in total.
00:51:24Yeah.
00:51:25With Randy Moss, I feel like he's the guy who does not get nearly enough credit for
00:51:28how intelligent and dedicated he was.
00:51:31Like his nickname is the freak and it's easy to think it was just like he was the most
00:51:34physically dominant player on almost every football field he's ever stepped on.
00:51:40But you also heard where he talked about, he studied the Patriots.
00:51:42He studied Tom Brady.
00:51:43He wanted to be a part of the Patriots organization for a long time and he cared about winning.
00:51:48And I feel like there's, you know, sometimes there's that connotation of like when he wasn't
00:51:53sometimes maybe the best teammate because he was in bad situations.
00:51:58And I think at some point the guy kind of just felt defeated because he's on all these
00:52:01teams and just didn't really know what the winning formula was.
00:52:05And then anytime you hear about the background with him and Brady and how they connected
00:52:08so quickly because like Brady says, Randy was the smartest receiver he ever played with.
00:52:14And that's why they were so insanely productive.
00:52:17The first time they ever played together was because Randy knew how he threatened to defense
00:52:21the way that he knew, all right, if I'm on the field, they're playing cover too.
00:52:24So we got to find a way to be covered too, because ain't nobody playing cover one against
00:52:27me.
00:52:28That's not going to happen.
00:52:29So it was awesome to see that love because I just feel like there's so much about his
00:52:32game that goes underappreciated.
00:52:34And it was great to see Patriots fans because of that condensed timeline that he was here.
00:52:39Like I barely watched football while he was here, to be honest, really everything I know
00:52:41about him is from what I've heard and from quotes and looking in retrospect and all that,
00:52:47but really cool to see him get that appreciation.
00:52:50Bill Belichick, of course, same thing where don't love the way his departure's been handled.
00:52:59It's just, it's been really messy and it feels like there's kind of been some dirt thrown
00:53:04on his name a little bit and it's almost like credits being taken away from him.
00:53:08And obviously because of how things ended, I feel like the perception is the media turned
00:53:12against Belichick.
00:53:13And I think there can be, you know, two things can be true.
00:53:15The end of the tenure was not great, but that was a very small piece of his time with the
00:53:19Patriots, a career that will never be mashed into C, like it was really wild every time
00:53:25he said, thank you.
00:53:26And everybody's just getting more excited, was absolutely incredible.
00:53:31Love to see that.
00:53:32And then Brady, like I'll tell my little quick story.
00:53:35I always talk about how I was kind of late to liking football.
00:53:37I didn't start watching football at all till 2009.
00:53:40I went to the Pheasanton school and moved to new England and obviously everyone's a
00:53:44Patriots fan.
00:53:45So I'm like, okay, yeah, I'll try this football stuff out.
00:53:48But because they were successful, I was like, all right, I actually want to understand why
00:53:51this is and which is why I started getting into film.
00:53:54And the past few years of quarterback play here have really helped me appreciate how
00:53:59lucky I was because I was able to study Brady and Belichick where with bad teams, it's so
00:54:05hard to learn the game because people are doing things wrong.
00:54:09And it's difficult to know, is this person right?
00:54:11Is this wrong?
00:54:12Like I bet myself backwards trying to figure out why Cam Newton was struggling, why Matt
00:54:16Jones was struggling.
00:54:17You know, it's hard to know why people are doing things wrong sometimes with Brady and
00:54:21Belichick, just seeing what the standard was for great, well-coordinated defense and elite
00:54:25quarterback play.
00:54:26And all of those things just made it so much easier for me to fall in love with the game
00:54:31and dive deeper and want to learn as much as I could.
00:54:33And like you said, Alex, like they'll never know that kind of impact, but that has completely
00:54:37changed my life.
00:54:38Like sitting there was incredible.
00:54:40I'm sure we all felt it having watched these dynasties and the amount of success these
00:54:43teams have had.
00:54:44And then being able to sit there and watch them get all this adoration and talk about
00:54:48it and relive it was incredible and surreal.
00:54:51And I had to pinch myself a few times.
00:54:53So yeah, I was so glad to see those guys get the well-deserved praise they deserve.
00:55:00Give me your top three, best, most emotional, whatever, your top three moments.
00:55:04I mean, it was definitely Bill and Randy.
00:55:08I don't know what my third one would be.
00:55:12I'll say this with Bill.
00:55:15Let's not sleep on Deion Branch's introduction because that was awesome because you knew
00:55:19it was getting towards the end of the night and Bill is going to need to speak soon.
00:55:23So Deion Branch and Troy Brown go up and they're doing like this little back and forth about
00:55:27Brady and Troy Brown's like, here's how I knew when I was in the presence of greatness.
00:55:31And he tells some story about he's in New York with Tom Brady and they bumped into Jay-Z,
00:55:34whatever.
00:55:35It's like a fun little story.
00:55:37And then Deion Branch goes, here's how I know we're in the presence of greatness right now.
00:55:40There's four reasons.
00:55:41It says we got the greatest fans in the world.
00:55:44We got the greatest quarterback in the world.
00:55:47We got the greatest owner in the world.
00:55:48And he goes, and now we've got the greatest coach in the world.
00:55:51And they point to Bill Belichick and the place just goes nuts.
00:55:53And like Deion's a real one for that.
00:55:55That was odd because it's like, you'd think like, all right, you got to get up for Bill
00:55:59Belichick's introduction.
00:56:00Like how are they going to introduce Bill?
00:56:02It's a big one.
00:56:03Deion Branch would not have been at the top of my list.
00:56:05Not going to lie.
00:56:06I figured maybe one of the defensive players, maybe they get like scar up there to do it
00:56:09or something.
00:56:10Maybe Kraft does it as a show of like an olive branch, but no, it should have been Deion
00:56:14Branch the whole time.
00:56:15We just didn't know.
00:56:16That was awesome.
00:56:17Yeah.
00:56:18Again, Jay-Z would I, so you guys didn't cover the team then.
00:56:21And I don't know if you, when you went to games, you were ever in your seats for it,
00:56:24but when they would play PSA before the game, I mean, that was like my favorite part of
00:56:31game day.
00:56:32It re because you just felt, you know, now like covering the game, like pregame, there's
00:56:36kind of this weird, like electric lull is the best way I can put it like an hour before
00:56:42the game where it's like, everybody's there and you know, something's going to happen,
00:56:46but it's, I don't want to say it's lazy, but like there's kind of, all right, let's
00:56:48go.
00:56:49Let's get to the game.
00:56:50Second, you're done.
00:56:51Done.
00:56:52Done.
00:56:53The sec.
00:56:54There would be the energy of the building completely shifted.
00:56:56Everybody, not just Brady, the other players on the field, the coaches, you could feel
00:56:59it from the fans.
00:57:00Brady talked about this last night that he was like the whole Patriots, everybody did
00:57:05what they needed to do to help the team win, whether it was players, coach or staffers,
00:57:09even fans showing up in the cold, showing up in the rain, right?
00:57:12Things like that.
00:57:14It was like, everybody knew, all right, we got a job to do.
00:57:17There's another team here, whether you're a player, whether you're a coach or your fan,
00:57:20that was the wake up call.
00:57:21Like we got to make this other team's life hell.
00:57:24That's that this is, that's, that's the signal.
00:57:26That's the horn, right?
00:57:27They blow at the beginning of battle that it's time to go.
00:57:30It's time to go.
00:57:31So that was really cool.
00:57:33One of like my favorite Pat's moments, like attending the game as a fan was I went to
00:57:38the game 2016.
00:57:39I forget who was against, but it was the first home game after a suspension bangles.
00:57:45And when that, when that Jay-Z song hit, like that play, like the stadium was packed before,
00:57:51which you know, it's usually like half capacity at that point.
00:57:54People are walking around the concourse.
00:57:55Like that stadium was, was pretty full when he came back and that was an awesome moment.
00:57:59So yeah, that, that was awesome.
00:58:02Again, that they got Jay-Z there to do that and introduce Brady like that one more time.
00:58:07I thought it was cool.
00:58:08Oh, I'm sorry.
00:58:09No, go ahead.
00:58:10I was going to say quick.
00:58:11I thought it was really cool hearing the defenders talk about Brady.
00:58:15Like I feel like maybe one or two of those panels maybe could have been dropped because
00:58:19that was a really, really long show or ceremony.
00:58:23But just those defensive guys, obviously it feels like in the grand scheme of things,
00:58:27sometimes it flies under the radar that they did set the standard.
00:58:30Like Brady didn't walk in and like own the team.
00:58:33This was a team that was really run by guys like Willie McGinnis and obviously like Vince
00:58:38Wilfork and the impact he had.
00:58:40And to hear those guys who were such great workers and really talented players, but also
00:58:45just great leaders just show so much reverence to Brady.
00:58:49Like Vince Wilfork saying in his everyday life, when he thinks about leadership, he
00:58:53thinks of Tom Brady.
00:58:54That was one of the things I think PSA gave me the most goosebumps of anything that wasn't
00:58:57applause.
00:58:59But that was one of the really cool moments where these guys who, especially Vince Wilfork,
00:59:02because that was kind of my time when I started watching.
00:59:04I love Vince Wilfork and saw him as just like the dude on that defense.
00:59:09One of a few, obviously, but yeah, hearing how much those guys respected him and not
00:59:14just the player, but the man he is, because I know growing up and professionally, sometimes
00:59:20I do think about like what kind of thing would Brady do because he is an icon in that way
00:59:25and the way he carries himself and how professional, but also how kind he is.
00:59:28People talk about how he's a way better person than he is a football player.
00:59:32That's always nice to see the behind the curtain stuff where, yeah, he's a great player, but
00:59:37it's cool to know that someone who's an icon that way is an icon really off the field in
00:59:42the way they treat people on an everyday basis.
00:59:44I think it was cool too, just to go back a little bit, like Bill mentioning some of those
00:59:48players and he talked about Rodney Harrison.
00:59:50First thing he goes, Rodney Harrison should be in the pro football hall of fame.
00:59:52Every time.
00:59:53Hammering that one, Bill.
00:59:54I'm with you.
00:59:55Junior Seau getting a nice applause.
00:59:56I, because he, I mean, obviously tremendous, tremendous player in NFL history and he was
01:00:00with Patriots for a couple of years, but he didn't win one here and he's not, you know,
01:00:04talked about as often, but a re obviously means a lot to the game meant a lot to a lot
01:00:08of people.
01:00:09I thought it was nice to hear him get that pop.
01:00:11One more thing that stood out to me, if you're, you know, younger and you want to play football
01:00:17or you're just somebody who, you know, needs a kick in the ass is looking for motivation
01:00:22is just looking for a pick me up.
01:00:24The end of Brady speech where he talks about, you know, I'd recommend everybody play football
01:00:30because it's hard.
01:00:31I, I, I mean, shivers down my spine.
01:00:34Like I felt like he was talking to me, um, that it was just great.
01:00:37He, I want to pull up the exact quote so I get it right.
01:00:40But like, this was, you were listening to that while you were pumping out your 2 a.m.
01:00:44roster.
01:00:45This is hard.
01:00:48This is why we do this.
01:00:49No, but I thought like, this was really good.
01:00:51Um, to be successful at something, you don't need to be special.
01:00:56You just need to be what most people aren't consistent, determined, willing to work for
01:01:00it.
01:01:01No shortcuts.
01:01:02Like that to me sums up what the Patriots were in their heyday.
01:01:07And I just think it's really good freaking advice.
01:01:11And then he closed with what he called.
01:01:12So he said that and he goes, I'm Tom Brady.
01:01:14I'm a Patriot.
01:01:15And it was like, not a dry eye and that beautiful day.
01:01:19What a way to go out.
01:01:20And I just thought that last piece is funny.
01:01:23I was in the concourse.
01:01:24I had somebody come up to me and he was all, you know, I'm, I'm trying to get started,
01:01:28you know, watches the show.
01:01:29Thanks for watching.
01:01:30Like I'm trying to get started with, you know, podcasting and covering the Patriots and what
01:01:34do I need to do?
01:01:35And I was like, listen to what that guy just said.
01:01:36He's not going to say anything that I did.
01:01:38It means a hell of a lot more coming from him.
01:01:40So I thought the end of the speech was the whole speech is great.
01:01:43But the end of the speech was just fantastic because that was, that was Tom Brady.
01:01:49You know, that was Tom Brady, you know, no concentrate.
01:01:52That was, that was, I really think him digging deep into what allowed him to be him.
01:01:58I really hope Drake may was laser focused that entire, you hear this, right?
01:02:04Like this is what it takes.
01:02:06I did want to see that.
01:02:07I did want to say, I hope they had Drake may.
01:02:09And frankly, everybody on the team, it's like clockwork orange into watching that ceremony
01:02:14and watching Brady be like, this is, this is, this is what's on the other side.
01:02:18If you put it into work, this is what's on the other side.
01:02:21If you guys do what we need you to do, but yeah, Drake may especially just like burn
01:02:25that into his brain.
01:02:26I'll say they had all the rookies and like the current players, they were up in like
01:02:31the front left or they would have been to the right of the stage.
01:02:34And I was watching them kind of throughout.
01:02:37They kind of, the crowd kind of fizzled out the players and like the current coaches,
01:02:41it kind of fizzled out at the end again, it was like a three hour ceremony.
01:02:44It was kind of long, but I think at the end there were four or five rookies left and Drake
01:02:49may was one of them.
01:02:50So he stayed throughout the whole thing, which I thought was just kind of a cool scene to
01:02:54see that.
01:02:55Uh, they're also, all the rookies were wearing their jerseys.
01:02:58I don't know if that was a prank or if that was like all the former Patriots know who
01:03:03they are.
01:03:04Yeah.
01:03:05Or if they had some event or whatever it was, but I thought that was just kind of funny
01:03:08that they were all wearing their jerseys and sticking out like that.
01:03:11But uh, yeah, Drake may was one of the guys who did stay, uh, throughout the whole thing
01:03:15for it to hear Brady's speech there.
01:03:17Good.
01:03:18Good.
01:03:19That's encouraging.
01:03:20Yeah.
01:03:21All right.
01:03:22There you have it.
01:03:24Summer breaks here.
01:03:25We're going to have, uh, some interesting shows for you the next few weeks.
01:03:28Training camp will be here before you know it.
01:03:30But uh, what do we have in between then?
01:03:31Do we have anything in between then?
01:03:34Yeah.
01:03:35Yeah.
01:03:36So we're all going to need a, you know, I'm excited to try to spin the dial on defense
01:03:39against Taylor.
01:03:40See if I can trick them.
01:03:41What system do you have?
01:03:43Xbox.
01:03:44God.
01:03:45They cross play.
01:03:46Oh, I got to buy a new system.
01:03:49You got it.
01:03:50We should do like a, we'll get Mike in on it.
01:03:52Like Patriots beat Patriots daily dynasty.
01:03:55Something like that.
01:03:56Um, what, what system should I buy?
01:03:57I've always been a PlayStation guy, PlayStation, but like I was going to just buy the new
01:04:04PS five.
01:04:05And then I saw like, there's a new one coming out in like a month.
01:04:07So like, I don't know.
01:04:10I need someone who's in the chat who knows about PlayStations to DM me or tell me, or
01:04:15just tweet at me which PlayStation I should buy.
01:04:18This is where we're at.
01:04:20Happy summer break.
01:04:22But no, we'll be back.
01:04:23Me and Brian will still be doing shows twice a week on, uh, for Patriots beat, uh, Mike
01:04:27Taylor's still going to be doing Patriots daily.
01:04:30You got a show tomorrow.
01:04:32Um, still trying to figure out whether we're going to drop it or record it, but, uh, there
01:04:35is, there's a bad speed, a past daily content, uh, coming real soon.
01:04:40And in the meantime, we'll cover anything happens.
01:04:42You know, Ramond Drake Stevenson said he's close to a contract extension.
01:04:45Maybe we get that Stefan Gilmore, you know, there's still a couple of free agents out
01:04:49there that might be worth signing, uh, but they have not been in contact.
01:04:53So nothing, nothing's going on yet.
01:04:56Maybe he just doesn't want to let anything slip.
01:04:57All of coverage, 98, five sports hub.com Taylor, obviously CLNS media, Brian Pat's
