00:00To the late kick-off now, which just finished as we came on air,
00:04no doubt creating panic in the edit suites above us,
00:06it's Dundee United against Hearts, describing the action as Alistair Lamont.
00:12Opening day draws for both these sides,
00:15so both keen to get maiden victories under their belts as quickly as possible.
00:20Dundee have begun the campaign in fine form
00:23as they seek to emulate, or even better, last season's achievements.
00:27Hearts, though, have had the better of recent meetings,
00:30and will look to continue that this evening.
00:33Tory Docherty's only alteration to the team that started the derby draw
00:38with United is to reintroduce Scott Tiffany in place of Luke Graham,
00:42in what also looks like a change of shape.
00:45Equally, Stephen Nesmith gives Daniel Oyegoke a first start
00:50in his only change from the side that began the game against Rangers.
00:54Jan Danda is the man to make way, as Hearts also tweak their system.
01:01The Managers look to be in good terms pre-match.
01:10As good as Dundee's return to the top flight was,
01:13they haven't won at Dens in the league since the middle of March.
01:16Let's see if they can change that today.
01:25FANS CHANT
01:33Opportunity perhaps for Lyle Cameron,
01:35that's a good save from Xander Clark.
01:38To deny Cameron.
01:41Cameron was quickly closed down but he got the shot off well.
01:44Threw himself to his left to keep it out.
01:54FANS SHOUT OUTSIDE
01:58Vargas is pinched up from Luke McEwan.
02:02Could be an opportunity here for Hearts,
02:04Vargas has gone for it and he's not too far away there.
02:09McEwan, possession, it was almost very costly for Dundee.
02:14Mr Rieken.
02:16McKay up with him but he went for it himself.
02:19Just past the upright.
02:24FANS SING OUTSIDE
02:34What a good clearance.
02:36McEwan must have thought about taking the shot on,
02:39instead he plays it short to Tiffany, Cameron wants it...
02:42Tiffany goes for goal, though!
02:45And it was the right choice, because Scott Tiffany fires Dundee into the lead.
02:51Xander Clark never recovered from the poor clearance.
03:00Scott Tiffany's first of the season,
03:02and it all comes from that mis-kick from Xander Clark.
03:07Tiffany with options coming in behind him,
03:11but he went for goal and he arrowed it into Xander Clark's near post.
03:16Goalkeeper.
03:18Hadn't really got set again, looks like a pretty decent position there.
03:22But Tiffany finds the bottom corner.
03:34It was Kent with the header, and Shackler with the opportunity!
03:37Terrific block.
03:41There's Larkis, he's got his body in the way.
03:45Shackland on his 29th birthday, looking to mark it with a goal.
03:52Lots of grappling in there, but Kent freed himself.
04:05Now to Taylor, low ball in, doesn't come to Vargas.
04:09McEwan.
04:11Taylor's now lifting that over the top, looking for Palmer-Holden.
04:17Penrice trying to stay with him, Palmer-Holden gets the shot off,
04:21Clark makes a stop, Cameron on the rebound!
04:24And that one's held by the Hearts goalkeeper.
04:28Really good effort from that angle from Palmer-Holden,
04:31and Cameron to adjust to get the shot off.
04:36Larkis.
04:42Oh, that's a poor challenge.
04:44Really poor challenge from Taylor.
04:48He's getting a bit heated after that.
04:52Fans baying for a red card here, what will Don Robertson's view be?
04:56It's a yellow card for Gerald Taylor.
05:00FANS ROAR
05:04Really clatters into Tiffany there.
05:09It's going to be to one of the Dundee management team.
05:12Is it Tony Walker to himself?
05:16Who, me?
05:25Presumably for something he's said to the fourth official, Colin Stephen.
05:30Somewhat bemused, I think.
05:33If he wants to make it half-time, no doubt.
05:36As Colin Stephen shows, there'll be three minutes added on.
05:42Palmer-Holden back to Ingram.
05:45And to Murray.
05:47He's got to spin and get away from Rowles, which he manages to do,
05:50and there's an own goal!
05:52Oh, it's gone from bad to worse for Gerald Taylor.
05:56And Dundee double their advantage in first-half stoppage time.
06:03It's been a bad five minutes for Gerald Taylor.
06:15Cameron's won it.
06:18Now Tiffany.
06:20Oh, that could be a penalty.
06:22It is!
06:23Frankie Kent stuck out the boot, Tiffany went down.
06:27Could this first half get any worse for Hearts?
06:31There's no question about that.
06:34Here he could put them three goals up before half-time.
06:38If he can beat Xander Clark, it's McEwan.
06:42Brilliant penalty.
06:44Xander Clark beaten, and Dundee are three up at half-time against Hearts.
06:50What a performance.
06:54Absolute delirium at Den's Park.
06:58The coolest of penalties from Luke McEwan.
07:01No wonder there is interest in him in this final year of his contract.
07:07It's three for the season for the Dundee skipper,
07:10it's three for the afternoon for his team.
07:15And there is a half-time whistle, listen to the roar from the home fans.
07:20Tony Dougherty masterminding another fabulous display as tempers fray.
07:29As the sides go in at the interval.
07:32Hearts could be massively frustrated with the performance they've turned in,
07:36but Dundee will be absolutely delighted.
07:40Half-time at Den's, it's Dundee three, Hearts nil.
07:49HALF-TIME WHISTLE
07:55Just need to make an impact in this second period.
07:59As early as possible.
08:03Stand up.
08:09Looking for Shackland.
08:14Closed down, a big deflection there,
08:17and that's a good save from McCracken.
08:20It was Penrice who got the shot off.
08:22Deflection, looking up the keeper to make a good save.
08:31Rolls.
08:33Finds Oda.
08:37That's Danda arriving late,
08:39and he's not far away from pulling a goal back there.
08:43It's a good move from Hearts, Oda's ball in for Danda is a good one.
08:48And it's unfortunate to see that come bouncing off the turf.
08:58Vargas brought to the ground by Sillac.
09:08Danda, way to set peace.
09:11Dealt with by Murray, comes to Boateng,
09:14will help it back in, it's a big chance!
09:16Hearts have got one back, Frankie Kent,
09:19a towing for the penalty he gave away in the first half.
09:24Gives Hearts a lifeline.
09:30Boateng, formerly of Dundee,
09:33who provides the assist,
09:35and Kent with a fairly simple header,
09:38McCracken got a glove to it, couldn't keep it out.
09:42Hearts back within two of their hosts.
09:47Boateng.
09:53Danda again with the delivery, it's a dangerous one.
09:58That clear only as far as Boateng,
10:00Danda will curl it back in, glancing header from Oda.
10:05Not sure how much he got on it, McCracken stopped it though.
10:10Very dangerous delivery from Danda.
10:13He was in there for a handball but didn't look like there was anything wrong.
10:18I don't think he gets anything on it actually, McCracken keeping it out.
10:32Palmer holding, Baroni is way forward,
10:35to good effect, he's still going,
10:37it's Palmer holding, it's Tiffany!
10:39That would have finished it.
10:42Brilliant stuff from Palmer holding.
10:46Good strength, and speed,
10:49and resilience,
10:51good final ball,
10:53and Tiffany,
10:55scooping it over.
11:04Cowen's corner.
11:12Clear, and McCracken out of his box.
11:16He had to be helped out there by Ingram.
11:19Almost a huge misjudgment there by McCracken as this long ball is played forward.
11:26That's just enough of it initially.
11:34Throw in from Taylor,
11:36Oda's got to put that either side of the keeper,
11:38and if he does it's a certain goal.
11:41Massive chance there.
11:44Comes off Ingram on his way through,
11:47and Oda has just got to score there.
11:58Dundee's fabulous start to the season continues, unbeaten,
12:02and too good for Harps.
12:06This evening.
12:08A wonderful first half performance above all.
12:12And so it finishes at Dens Park.
12:14Dundee 3, Harps 1.
12:18A brilliant first half performance from Dundee,
12:20secures all three points.
12:22Neil, they're both your old teams,
12:24but Dundee especially.
12:26How impressed were you with them tonight,
12:28especially in that first half?
12:29Very.
12:31Doc had to shuffle the pack against United,
12:33because United were brilliant in the first half in the derby.
12:36Changed, went to a back four.
12:38Continued with a back four,
12:40which is interesting because Harps were the opposite.
12:42They played really well against Rangers.
12:44Went to a back three with her.
12:46That was to match up,
12:47thinking that Tony might go back to the three centre-backs.
12:49But he remained on that back four with the three and the three,
12:52and I thought they were outstanding.
12:55Tiffany coming in,
12:56getting a start today,
12:57looked very lively,
12:58opens the scoring of course.
13:01But I think the main man has been McEwan last season,
13:05but just tucked in behind him,
13:06little Lyle Cameron.
13:07I mean, they've got so much invention.
13:09They're good to watch.
13:10Very, very good.
13:11Very, very good to watch.
13:12Creative, aggressive going forward.
13:15And it just shows their flexibility within the group,
13:18that they can go to a three centre-backs
13:20and convert to a four if they need to.
13:22At home, I think Doc's going to try and...
13:24I mean, what a campaign as well.
13:26You've got the league,
13:27cruised the League Cup campaign,
13:28go across the road to United,
13:30come away with a really good game,
13:32but a good point.
13:33And then to start off your Premiership campaign
13:36with three points against a very, very good hard side.
13:38What a start.
13:39They did start the game very well,
13:41creating opportunities,
13:42and obviously got that first goal.
13:44It came from, obviously,
13:45a poor error from Xander Clarke as well.
13:48Yeah, you look back on this,
13:50just a bit rash.
13:52Poor clearance,
13:53probably could have popped it into Kent
13:54to pop back out.
13:55However, it didn't,
13:57and again, poor defending.
14:00Going into the game,
14:01knowing that Tiffany is right footed,
14:02you want to come inside the defender.
14:05Again, protect the middle,
14:06show the ball,
14:07show them outside,
14:08doesn't do his job,
14:09comes inside and also,
14:10I feel that he needs a wee bit of help as well.
14:12Even when he comes inside,
14:14surely he's got to make more of an effort.
14:16He's got to make more of an effort.
14:17I've always said this before,
14:18you're out there, you're isolated,
14:191v1, it's difficult.
14:20Someone behind him,
14:21talk to him,
14:22Grant, I'm behind you,
14:23I'm behind you, I'm helping you.
14:24If he comes inside, I'm blocking it.
14:25But stepping back,
14:26lousy shot comes in,
14:27it's just poor defending all round.
14:28And, you know,
14:29I think it's not a performance
14:31we've seen coming that first half,
14:32especially how well they've done against Rangers.
14:35Yeah, Dundee would have been delighted
14:37Gerald Taylor wasn't sent off for this challenge
14:40because he then goes on to score
14:42the second OG of the night
14:43and this one's a cracker.
14:44Yeah, this takes the best
14:46AWG of the night.
14:49But, listen,
14:50I think Gerald Taylor should do well
14:52not to watch this back,
14:53particularly this last five minutes.
14:55Every time I see this,
14:57it looks as if it meets
14:58most of the criteria,
15:00I would say, for a red card.
15:01I'm happy it's a yellow
15:02because we're of an age and an era
15:04where that's all right.
15:05But I tell you,
15:06that one there,
15:07that last angle
15:08looked a red card.
15:09He's very lucky to stay in the pitch.
15:11But, I mean, this one,
15:12if he get out of jail there,
15:15he certainly doesn't here.
15:16This is horrible.
15:17I mean, there's only so many
15:19things that you could say
15:20that would help him here.
15:21His body position's not right,
15:23he's trying to recover
15:24and come in with Tiffany.
15:26He tries to play that
15:28with the outside of his way.
15:29He does, he does.
15:30But that is absolutely shindo,
15:32right off the middle.
15:34That's LBW in the old cricket world.
15:36It's got all sorts on it, that.
15:38I think he goes with his wrong foot,
15:39first and foremost.
15:40And secondly,
15:41he tries to,
15:42instead of using the pace on the ball
15:43and just guiding the ball back
15:44where it's come from,
15:45he's tried to smash it.
15:46And it's ultimately,
15:47for how good he's been,
15:48and I've watched him...
15:49I tell you what,
15:50he was great in the game last week.
15:51Yeah, I watched him pre-season
15:52and he's been really good
15:53defending 1v1,
15:54but that first 45 minutes today,
15:55you know,
15:56it was a poor one
15:57from probably standards
15:58of what you've seen.
15:59And it does happen
16:00and unfortunately,
16:01he got punished for it.
16:02OK, let's now get some
16:03post-match reaction
16:04from the game.
16:05I was really pleased.
16:06I think that was
16:07an almost complete
16:08team performance.
16:09Against a really good
16:10Hearts team,
16:11we had to make sure
16:12our organisation
16:13against the ball was good
16:14and I thought it was outstanding.
16:15But when you do that,
16:16you have to get the balance right.
16:17When you're in possession,
16:18you need to be clinical,
16:19you need to be brave,
16:20you need to show that quality.
16:21And I thought I got all that.
16:22And I think,
16:23deservedly,
16:24we went in 3-0 at the break.
16:25And yeah,
16:26as I say,
16:27I just thought
16:28the level of performance
16:29for the team
16:30in terms of in possession
16:31and out of possession
16:32was outstanding.
16:33To go in 3-0 down
16:34was really disappointing.
16:35Not what you expected.
16:36And the most frustrating thing is
16:38the goals are really poor.
16:40They're cheap
16:41from our point of view.
16:42I don't think Dundee
16:43had to work hard for them.
16:44But I do think it stems
16:46from the energy,
16:48the intensity
16:49that we played at
16:50in the first half.
16:51The first 20 minutes
16:52was just a battle
16:53and loads of stoppages,
16:54loads of throw-ins
16:55and we probably came out
16:56second best on them.
16:57We had a couple of 50-50s
17:00where we broke
17:01and were in the box
17:02against Cutback
17:03and we allowed
17:04the defensive player to get in.
17:05And then in our final third
17:06they seemed to be getting to
17:07all the second balls
17:08and that was probably
17:10the root of the problem.
17:12Yeah, Lyle Cameron
17:13was excellent today
17:14in the midfield
17:15for Dundee
17:16and he was involved,
17:17obviously,
17:18in the third goal,
17:19the penalty kick as well.
17:20He had a great game.
17:21Yeah, he's really
17:22technically good.
17:23He's small in stature
17:24but I said last week
17:25that he's got
17:26such a big temperament.
17:28He's brave.
17:29He gets up in the game.
17:31He's got really good feet
17:33and he can see passes
17:35but I think
17:36when you're talking
17:37about MacEwan
17:38you've got the safety
17:39of Avosila
17:40who's very good
17:41in the holding today
17:42and he's a destructor
17:43but he's allowing
17:44this little man
17:45to get up in the game
17:46which is the best
17:47in terms of his quality.
17:48I've known him
17:49since he was a 15-year-old boy.
17:50He's not grown much
17:51but his ability
17:52was never in question
17:53then at that age
17:54and I'm just loving
17:55seeing him just
17:56execute his skills.
17:57Frankie Kent won't
17:58enjoy watching this either.
17:59Again, it's Tiffany
18:00coming inside.
18:01Kristoff's already
18:02speaking about
18:03information coming inside.
18:04You can't dive in.
18:05You can't just hang a leg
18:06out in the penalty box
18:07and MacEwan scores
18:08last week.
18:09This is nice, Kristoff.
18:10It's just lazy defending.
18:11Both defenders
18:12let him come inside
18:13and you're just not
18:14working your feet.
18:15You're just hanging a leg
18:16and we've all done it
18:17and I've done it
18:18in my career as well
18:19but it's just
18:20work your feet,
18:21move your feet
18:22and don't allow them
18:23to get in the way.
18:24Obviously, Scotland 21
18:25has worked with him.
18:26Great kid.
18:27He can do a bit of everything.
18:28Really robust, strong,
18:29athletic,
18:30works his socks off
18:31and he's got ability.
18:32Absolutely.
18:33I'll tell you who deserves
18:34a wee bit of credit quickly
18:35is the Dundee groundsman.
18:36The pitch was looking great.
18:37It was looking good, aye?
18:38Just needs to keep that up.
18:39It does.
18:40I'm sure it will do.
18:41Right, okay.
18:42Well, thank you very much
18:43for joining us tonight
18:44and from everyone here
18:45on the Sports Scene team
18:46we would like to wish
18:47Neil a very happy
18:4850th birthday tomorrow.
18:49You are ancient.
18:50Goodnight.
18:51You are ancient.
18:52Goodnight.
19:21Goodnight.
19:22Goodnight.
