00:00On PLZ Soccer's YouTube channel I'm Peter Martin, Alan Ruff is here alongside Tam McManus
00:12and Allison McConnell and there's lots to talk about on our show and hopefully if you
00:18get a chance hit the subscribe button on the YouTube channel and you can join the football
00:22family and as ever right across the whole of the country lots of people downloading
00:27the app as well and that'll give you all the latest breaking news and I'll say this catchphrase
00:32because Tam loves it, wherever you are, we are. There you are. It's your favourite catchphrase.
00:39It is cheesy isn't it? And you were so enthusiastic about saying it in Germany. Anyway, the team's
00:45here and we're looking forward to chatting to you and thanks to so many of you for downloading
00:49on the podcast as well. Obviously they won't be able to see Ruffy before we start talking
00:55about football in depth. We've had a lovely couple of days weather. You've nipped through
00:59to the festival and tried to be a lovey. Allison and I have just grafted because that's
01:05what we do and some people go out and play golf but would you honestly, if you were going
01:12to play golf, would you wear these glasses and hang about with anybody who had those
01:17glasses? I mean honestly, look at the neck of him. He's got the legs out. These glasses.
01:22The only thing missing is Starsky and Hutch, isn't it? Honestly.
01:26Ollie Jacket.
01:27Yeah, exactly. Anyway, Tam's here and we'd love to hear from you. We'll read out some
01:33of your messages on the live feed. So, lots to talk about. Cherney looking good for Rangers.
01:40Can he help them get past Kiev in the return leg? We'll talk about that. Brendan Rodgers
01:45still confident of signing players before the window closes. It's not ideal preparation
01:51for St Mirren or Kilmarnock ahead of their Conference League match on Thursday after
01:55defeats at the weekend. And if you're looking at players who are out there that might be
02:00worthwhile of looking for a possible loan deal, Liverpool considering a loan deal for
02:04Ben Doak. I wonder who'll snatch him. Just a few of the things we'll talk about. Here's
02:09the Premiership results from the weekend that we'll be discussing. Rangers 2 Mullow 1, Ross
02:15County 1, Dundee United 1, Dundee 3, Herts 1, Hibs 0, Celtic 2, Aberdeen 3, St Mirren
02:221 and the last one there, Kilmarnock 0, St Johnston 3. Couple of surprise results. Okay.
02:29Hamden was the venue. Rangers 2 Mullow 1. Here's what a few Rangers fans made of the
02:34switch to Hamden.
02:38I think it's probably unfortunate but I'm not blaming Rangers for it. The song says
02:45everywhere, anywhere we will follow on so that's why I'm here. Well it's no ideal but
02:51we are where we are at the moment so can't wait to get back to our spiritual home of
02:55Ibrox hopefully before too long and we'll just take it game by game basis. We farcical
03:01yeah. Not very good. Hopefully we can get it sorted soon but I'm not holding my breath
03:07I don't like it. That's a bit of a mess obviously. Ibrox and that. I just don't like Hamden at
03:16all anyway you know.
03:18Yeah, as some people are obviously aware of the fact that needs must they had to look
03:24for the venue. I was wondering how it would affect them Ruffey but in the end they got
03:28a good win and certainly on the evidence of the goals that they scored, Desser's chernies
03:34was a peach.
03:35Yeah, I think it was just taking on for last year. I think Clermont had been saying he's
03:40looking for a 90 minutes performance out of the team but again he only got 45 minutes
03:45at the weekend there. A good 45 minutes. I thought they were excellent. Second half they
03:50sort of dropped off a wee bit and let Motherwell come back into the game and I think it was
03:54Rangers that were holding on at the end but yes, Desser's again scored. I'm sure he'll
04:00get my 20 goals. Was it 20 goals I said?
04:02I think it was 30.
04:04No it wasn't 30.
04:06It was 20.
04:08It seems to be in the right place at the right time. I know he had a header.
04:12I think you said 25 Ruffey. We'll look back.
04:14He said 20 because I agreed with him.
04:16I said 20.
04:18That's a sign of panic over.
04:20Well listen, fair play to the boy because 20 goals. Listen, more than 20 goals last
04:28season he got it in the neck so he's off to not a bad start.
04:32Welcome to Glasgow.
04:34You'll still feel the flack. I think probably the criticism was just a lack of consistency
04:40when you consider the many chances that he has in games and how many chances he maybe
04:44needs before he scores but I think if you're hitting 20 odd goals this season you're doing
04:48something right.
04:50Just on that, everybody was looking, he only got what, 55 minutes but Václav Šerný,
04:56he looked good. I'll tell you why he looked good because he picked passes that we appreciate
05:02in the game, Tam, which is splitting the defence, taking two or three defenders out with a pass,
05:06you can clearly see that and then the confidence to curl that one in for the goal for himself.
05:10Yeah, he looks a class act already.
05:12I think just his movement coming in off the line, you know, you've seen it a couple of
05:16times just in the second half.
05:18Just coming inside and he took his goal fantastically well.
05:20I don't think he's 100% fit yet but I think you can see his quality.
05:24He's got a real good pedigree in the clubs he's played at and I think the Rangers fans
05:30will be excited to see him when he's at full fitness and full pelt.
05:32Yeah, absolutely.
05:34The one thing that they won't want in this window is to see too many heading out the
05:38door, Rafi.
05:40There's obviously some players that they want away.
05:42Jose Cifuentes has signed a one-year loan deal at Arras.
05:46Jack Butland, there's still clubs sniffing around wondering.
05:50I mean, he pulled off a save down to his left, Rafi.
05:52You must have been impressed.
05:54Yeah, the same has carried on for last year.
05:56When Rangers are on top, other teams are going to get chances and even last year he was making
06:02these saves that were stopping the opposition coming back into the game.
06:06It was an excellent save low down.
06:08He had to go really sharp on that.
06:10That might have given Motherwell a wee hint of we might get something out of that game.
06:16It just shows you his worth.
06:18Back to gossip, Motherwell weren't all that impressive but the speculation that Lennon
06:23Miller is still attracting attention, I still would love to see him.
06:27I know the boy is concentrating on Motherwell but Money Talks, I'd still love to see him
06:31stay at Motherwell and get himself another 50 games this season.
06:34I think the key phrase here is Money Talks.
06:37I think that's a sensible thing to do.
06:39I think another season would do him good.
06:42He's only 17.
06:43You forget he broke into that first team at 16.
06:46He's still very young.
06:47He's still got a lot to learn but I think you can see the quality there.
06:50You can see why Motherwell are excited by him.
06:53He's a fantastic young prospect.
06:55I know that there's been a couple of clubs looking at him and still interested in him
06:59but I think if that came to fruition, if there was a tangible offer put on the table, I think
07:05it becomes very difficult to say no to it for all sorts of reasons.
07:09However, I think when the window closes, Motherwell may be quite relieved to put an end to the
07:14speculation and keep him if that's what happens and just let him concentrate on his football.
07:18But I think it's a matter of time.
07:20I think you know that other clubs will come in for him.
07:23In terms of just being able to develop his game and mature a bit, I think Motherwell
07:27is a perfect home for him at the minute.
07:29Two games down, would you make him a load, Tam?
07:32Yeah, they're struggling a little bit I think, Peter.
07:35In terms of scoring goals, they're struggling with injuries.
07:38I think that Shute Kettlewell seems very hot and cold as a manager.
07:41He goes on fantastic runs of unbeaten and getting manager of the month and then they
07:45go really cold.
07:46They go 10, 12 games without a win.
07:48They can't afford to do that again this season.
07:50I don't think there's any pressure on them.
07:52But obviously they'll need to start picking up some results.
07:55Kind of tough next couple of games as well.
07:58Yeah, I think they'll be fine, Peter, once they get a lot of players back fit.
08:02They're really struggling at the minute with seven or eight players out injured.
08:05Yep, absolutely.
08:06Give us your thoughts on it on our feed on our YouTube channel.
08:10Don't forget to hit that subscribe button as well.
08:13Of course, Rangers now all eyes on Tuesday night at Hamden.
08:17It's Rangers against Dynamo Kiev and our man Patrick Mullen was out at the Rangers
08:22camp to find out what the preparations are like.
08:25Rangers are preparing to take on Dynamo Kiev in their Champions League qualifying second leg.
08:30Tomorrow night, the game will happen at Hamden due to those Ibrox renovations.
08:34And while it will not be a famous Ibrox European night,
08:37Philippe Clement is hoping these fans can bring that atmosphere on tour to Hamden Park.
08:41I hope like in Ibrox, I hope that and that the fans feel already more at home after the first time.
08:49And the first time, it's always like the first day in school.
08:52You feel a little bit uncomfortable.
08:54It will be now for a lot of people the second time in that way.
08:59And like this, that we can create an Ibrox atmosphere in Hamden also.
09:05It would be a huge achievement also from the fans to sit a little bit further away from the pitch,
09:10but still create the same atmosphere.
09:12We also spoke to Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland,
09:15who says his teammates are aware of the financial impact of qualifying for Champions League
09:20and are not comfortable with another season of Europa League football.
09:23And that's why tomorrow is so important.
09:25We're not comfortable with the Europa League.
09:28Yes, it's a great competition if you are in there and there's a great opportunity to progress
09:33and things like that.
09:34But we want to test ourselves.
09:35What it does for the club, just in the outside world,
09:40just in general for players who experience that,
09:42the financial gain for the club, it's an important thing.
09:45That's not something that we think of as players.
09:47It's just a reality.
09:49So there's so many pros to qualifying for that.
09:51And it's certainly our target.
09:53It's Rangers versus Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League qualifier.
09:56It kicks off tomorrow night at 7.45.
09:59Yeah, looking forward to it.
10:00Kyiv had a 2-1 win away at NK Veruzhlivne.
10:04So they've had the ideal preparation as well for this one.
10:08I just wonder, the only unknown in this, Alisson,
10:12the fans can have their say on what they think of Hamden.
10:15Rangers clearly will be happy enough to get that win in the league.
10:19But does that surface?
10:21Does that huge stadium,
10:25does it offer a negative towards Rangers and European football
10:28and an advantage to Kyiv?
10:29I thought Rangers looked as if they had a wee bit more quality to Kyiv.
10:33It didn't look as if there was anything special to me in last week's game.
10:37Yeah, I think Rangers took a very favourable result back.
10:40They bring it back to Glasgow, to Hamden.
10:42Obviously, it goes without saying,
10:44there's a compromised element playing at Hamden in the games,
10:47not at Ibrox.
10:48I think that's without question.
10:50I think, you know, Hamden isn't,
10:52you don't have to look too far for critics of the national stadium,
10:55given the position of the seats,
10:57how far away they are from the stand in terms of generating atmosphere.
11:01However, I think this is a huge game for Rangers.
11:04You know what the ultimate prize is and what the ultimate goal is.
11:07I think the tie is tipped in the balance.
11:10It's in their favour at the minute.
11:12That last goal, that late goal coming,
11:14it just gives them something to hang on to.
11:16And I think they should have enough.
11:19Just judging it from that first leg,
11:21I thought I'd expected more from Kyiv.
11:24I had thought that they would offer and pose Rangers a few more problems.
11:28I thought Rangers looked very comfortable in the game.
11:31And I think now you would expect them to go and do the business in the second leg.
11:35Yeah, we're all aware of the financial implications of this.
11:38I think our massive, absolutely massive Rangers have,
11:42I mean, should I say they've got to make it?
11:46But it becomes a bigger problem if Celtic are in there
11:51with the financial rewards and Rangers suddenly drop to Europa League money.
11:55Yeah, I think Jack Buckland touched on it there in the interview.
11:58And I think it's been drummed into them.
12:00You know, Champions League is where they want to be.
12:02Obviously, I think both teams in the evidence the last week,
12:06both teams looked to Europa Cup teams.
12:08I didn't see anyone in Denmark or Kyiv that would say
12:11they would hurt anybody in the Champions League.
12:13So I think it's all still up for grabs.
12:16I don't think it'll affect Kyiv going there.
12:19They haven't played at home for about a year or two.
12:22So coming away won't be a hindrance to them.
12:25I just think it's all about the Rangers players handling the pressure
12:29of what's on toll for Champions League football.
12:32If they were to go behind, can they respond?
12:35Can they handle it?
12:36And we'll just have to wait and see if they can.
12:38Okay, give us your thoughts on how you think Rangers will fare at home.
12:42Hamden is their home up until the end of 2024.
12:47It could actually be a move back to Ivorock sooner,
12:50but we reckon we won't be too far out from November to December.
12:54They certainly will be playing European football at Hamden Park.
12:57Give us your thoughts on whether you think they can get past Kyiv.
13:00And then, of course, there's still one more qualifier after that.
13:04Thanks to so many of you for offering your opinion.
13:07Happy birthday.
13:08Happy 50th to William Smith.
13:11Loves the show, loves the banter and 50 years of age.
13:1450 years of age, Ruffey.
13:15What were you doing at 50?
13:17At 50?
13:19I still enjoyed myself as I am at 70.
13:23Not much changed then.
13:25I was playing golf, I was playing tennis.
13:27I can't think of 50 as a milestone in anything.
13:31Are you a person who worries about age, Ruffey?
13:34Not at all, no.
13:35Just a number, Ruffey.
13:37It's going to get you sooner or later, so why worry about it?
13:41That's exactly it, Ruffey.
13:43Why do you worry about age?
13:45Eh?
13:46The mere fact you started looking off into the distance.
13:50I think I never felt old until I started working with your young team.
13:54And then I kind of came sharp into the real world of how ancient I am.
14:00Yeah, absolutely.
14:01Think how I feel.
14:02Anyway, don't forget you can watch it live 4 o'clock Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
14:07Scott Allen and Ryan McGowan have joined us this season.
14:10And over and above that, we've got the journos, Alison Hugh and myself and special guests.
14:14And we have the Women's Football Show.
14:16We've got a new signing from the Women's Football Show as well.
14:20Excuse me.
14:22So, if you are near or far, drop us a line.
14:26We'd love to mention you on the show.
14:28Hibs 0, Celtic 2, Coonan McGregor.
14:31When the first one went in, Tam, I thought it was going to be an absolute hiding.
14:36Yeah, particularly after the Hearts got battered the night before.
14:41And I was tweeting that they were going to get a doon.
14:43I was fearing the worst after 2-0.
14:45My Twitter was going mental with Hearts fans.
14:47I'm just glad it stayed at 2-0 because I thought if Celtic keep going here, this could be an absolute doon.
14:54Hibs, first half were poor.
14:57I thought Celtic dominated the game.
14:59Should have been 3 or 4 up in the first half.
15:01Second half, Hibs were better.
15:03I don't know if they were better. Celtic just took the foot off the gas a little bit.
15:06Celtic should still have scored a couple of goals, I thought, in the second half.
15:09I thought they were wasteful in front of goal.
15:11The lad Bowie came on was probably the only highlight for me.
15:14I thought he looked good when he came on and nearly scored at the bar.
15:17But, if you're a Hibs supporter and you're looking at that game, you're thinking you've got to go to Parkhead next week in the Cup.
15:22You're not holding up much hope about getting through into the next round.
15:26Celtic, I thought, won the game cosily, comfortably.
15:29I think they had gears to go up.
15:32I thought Kuhn, I wrote him off last season.
15:35I thought he looked poor, but he looks sharper and more confident this season.
15:39He could be a big player for Celtic this year.
15:41Yeah, and of course the captain.
15:43Everybody making a hullabaloo about his decision not to play international football.
15:48But, if you look at it, over the last couple of seasons, injury apart last season,
15:52on average he's playing 50-plus games and most of the time he's playing 50-plus games, 90 minutes.
15:58Yeah, I think there's no doubt it eventually takes its toll.
16:01I think it takes a physical and a mental toll.
16:04I think going into this stage of his career, it felt inevitable.
16:08I think after the Euros there was a sense that he might come to that decision.
16:12I don't think it'll be a huge surprise.
16:14Steve Clarke was at the game yesterday, he was at Easter Road.
16:17I think Scotland are probably well served in the middle of the park.
16:21When you look at the options that they've got, I think they've got ample cover.
16:27However, losing a quality player I think will be disappointing for him.
16:31But I think from Celtic's perspective, you get the best out of him.
16:34You saw it with Scott Brown.
16:35You get an opportunity to rest during the international window, to refresh,
16:39just to recover from any bumps and bruises, any niggles.
16:42Just give your body that bit longer to prepare for forthcoming games.
16:46I think it can elongate a domestic career.
16:48Peach of a goal.
16:49Fantastic goal.
16:50Yeah, absolutely glorious goal.
16:52Murphy, what do you think of the goalkeeper for that?
16:54I thought you were going to say that.
16:57Why did he go with his other hand?
16:59If you watch most of the goals that you lose high up,
17:03it's the reaction when you go over that that hand goes further than that one.
17:07But I can't understand, it was so low down, and this hand is obviously going.
17:11I thought he used the wrong hand, but I thought it swerved a wee bit.
17:16Maybe he was unsighted, but you cannae take anything away from him.
17:19I thought he cut across the ball roughly.
17:22Aye, he cut across.
17:23It was at a height I think he should have got a hand to it, at least.
17:28A lot of people ask that, why the goalkeepers use the hand,
17:32the furthest away hand to go.
17:34But if you watch every goalkeeper, they all do it.
17:36It's not just one person.
17:37Yeah, and the other thing about it, which I think every goalkeeper should learn from,
17:42especially somebody like yourself who's so experienced
17:44and played at the highest level internationally,
17:47there are some shots that you just decide it's just not worth going for, Murphy.
17:50There's no point.
17:54Yeah, I was told that.
17:56There was a favourite saying, what's the point of going for it
17:59if you know you're not going to get it?
18:06Can you imagine some of the managers saying that to him?
18:09Look, if you feel as if it's an absolute raker, don't go for it.
18:12Don't die.
18:13Anyway.
18:14Stand and applaud.
18:15Yeah, absolutely.
18:17Absolutely.
18:18I've seen him do that.
18:20Or his classic, if you look back on any YouTube video of Murphy losing a goal,
18:26when it hits the back of the net, he does this.
18:30As if he just said, no, I can't believe you didn't get him there,
18:34didn't close him down.
18:35Anyway, there's sometimes, yeah, Maestro says,
18:39Zico, you don't need to remind him.
18:41I mean, he just didn't even bother going for it.
18:43Simple as that.
18:45Of course, Callum McGregor certainly lighting up the first half,
18:48but what about the reinforcements?
18:50This is what Brendan Rodgers had to say on the possibility of signings coming in.
18:54There's a lot of what I see I really, really like.
18:58We always want to improve.
18:59We know what we need.
19:01We have always known what we need, but my focus is with the players here.
19:05Hopefully, we can strengthen.
19:09That's dropped a wee bit for the last week.
19:11We will strengthen, and now it's hopeful.
19:14I don't think the Celtic supporters will accept that.
19:17I think they already think that they're good enough to win the league,
19:21which I think we would all agree at this moment in time they are.
19:24But I think there's now an expectation in Europe for Celtic to take it a wee bit further
19:29than what they have been doing in the last two or three seasons.
19:32I think they demand it now.
19:33They're paying their money.
19:35They're seeing the money that the club's bringing in.
19:37They're buying the merchandise.
19:39I just think they want to go and enjoy European football rather than hiding.
19:43Another comment from Brendan was,
19:46if Matt O'Reilly is sold, there will be no like-for-like replacement, Tam?
19:51I don't think Celtic can afford the like-for-like replacement anyway.
19:55I think Bernardo will probably slot into that area if he does go.
20:00Ruffey's right.
20:02If Celtic sell O'Reilly before the window closes and don't bring anyone in,
20:06it's going to be carnage at Celtic Park.
20:08I still think they've got to bring a striker in.
20:11If Kyogo gets injured, there's not a lot there in terms of a striker.
20:15I think they'll definitely sign a striker,
20:17but there's rumours about Owen Beck at Liverpool as well,
20:20maybe coming in to compete for Taylor for left-back.
20:23I think he'd be a good sign-in as well.
20:25It just depends how much Liverpool are looking for.
20:27I know he played for them in pre-season the other day.
20:29I think that's the two key areas for me that Celtic need to strengthen,
20:32particularly left-back and up front.
20:35If Kyogo needs to put his shoulder back in every now and then,
20:41which is the evidence of what's happened before,
20:44suddenly you're in a situation where you're saying
20:46this week they should announce Adam Ida,
20:49or will they wait until next week?
20:53It'll just depend on how the negotiations are going.
20:55I think it's pretty clear that he's going to end up at Celtic.
20:57I think they're just haggling over details, contracts and stuff.
21:01It does take time,
21:02but I think it's clear that he's going to be at Celtic before the window closes.
21:06I just think that with Kyogo at the minute,
21:10they're very reliant on him.
21:11If he gets injured, his shoulder goes again,
21:14they're really in trouble up front.
21:16In the long term, I don't think one's enough.
21:19I think they need two.
21:20I can't believe a time when Celtic as a team never had three or four strikers.
21:25Quality strikers to see you through the whole season.
21:28Four.
21:29Four at least.
21:30I can't remember who it was that said it.
21:32You need that amount if you're playing in every competition
21:35to give everybody a rotation.
21:37So even him coming in is still not enough for me for the whole season.
21:41I think four's a hard number to keep everyone happy.
21:45Is it nowadays, Ali, when you've got sometimes 50, sometimes 60 games
21:50where you've got domestic football where you can play a certain type of player
21:53and then maybe that level up again?
21:56The other thing about it as well is
21:58you kind of look for players who can make a difference coming from the bench.
22:05Do you think three?
22:06I think three.
22:07I think three at a minimum.
22:10I think four can be difficult just to try and
22:12Give the Celtic player one striker.
22:14Give everyone game time and keep everyone happy.
22:17I think three is probably your ideal, but I think they will.
22:20I think you'll see sign-ins before the end of the window.
22:23I think across the next few weeks you'll see a bit of movement.
22:26I think it's been slow all across the board.
22:28I think even when you look down south, you look to Europe,
22:31I think it's been a very slow window for everyone.
22:34It's been fairly sluggish, which you sometimes get on the back of a tournament.
22:37But also I just wonder what's the financial things going about just now too.
22:44Hibbs, are you worried, Ruffey?
22:46Not yet.
22:47I think you get worried when they start dropping points.
22:50It's just the same other way.
22:53Teams in the bottom six have not come up against that yet.
22:56The Celtic game will still be hanging around.
22:58So until he gets a win, you know, to get the supporters back on board.
23:03But the crowd was certainly there at the weekend.
23:05That was a good singing section behind.
23:07Is that new, Tam?
23:08The singing section behind the goal.
23:10I thought that added something to the game.
23:12But no, he needs a win and obviously the game's coming up.
23:15You wouldn't think he's going to get that very, very quickly.
23:17So he'll be looking at the fixture list.
23:19Yeah, absolutely.
23:20There's nothing worse than when you're singing and MacGregor hits one for 25 yards.
23:24I did actually spot that, you know.
23:27I wonder at what point they eventually just put their hands down.
23:31One thing I do hope happens at Hibernian is they get behind the manager.
23:36David Gray himself accepts that there's a long way to go in this and he needs time.
23:43There is a bit of short-term pain at the moment for what I do believe is a longer-term gain.
23:47Even in the last week, from where the squad was to where it is now,
23:51we've now got competition for places, albeit not quite at a level yet.
23:54We've talked about that already.
23:55We've got players to come back from injury.
23:57We've got players to join the group.
23:59And whilst the window's open, we'll constantly be trying to improve the squad.
24:03So I do believe we will get there.
24:07I am confident in that.
24:08There's a lot to improve on, we know.
24:10But it was good, even extra minutes into boys today,
24:13Kieran Bowie coming off the bench and showing what he can do.
24:17Are there any flashes that you can see?
24:20The reason why I think he deserves time is if they do bolster that squad even more
24:26and bring in more players, as he starts to get them together,
24:29he's got to try and mould a team together and give them the time to get used to the league.
24:34Yeah, and as you said Dale, they've brought in five or six players in the window.
24:38And I think, you're right, once they settle in and get playing games, Peter,
24:42I think you'll see a different Hibs team.
24:44I was really impressed with Kieran Bowie when he came on.
24:46Big lad, strong.
24:48Rad dull carter Vickers, there's not many people who do that.
24:51And he was unlucky with the one off the bar.
24:53Second half, Hibs showed little flashes.
24:55They were more dangerous with Martin Boyle getting down the side.
24:57So I think there's enough quality in the Hibs squad, Peter,
25:00to go and compete for the top six.
25:02I think third is a big, big ask this season.
25:05Well, in saying that, we've obviously got to speak about hearts in a minute.
25:09But I think that third place is pie in the sky now for Hibs.
25:12I think you've just got to concentrate and try and get into the top six again
25:15and then take it from there.
25:16Yeah.
25:17William, whose birthday it is, and I thought I'd let him ask this question.
25:20Ruffey says the best Brazil player that you played against
25:24was it Zico, Falcao or Socrates?
25:29Probably Zico.
25:31Yeah, I think Zico.
25:32Did they all score against you?
25:35Well, yeah, Socrates did.
25:38So did Falcao.
25:42I didn't want to throw in the fourth one as well.
25:45Eder.
25:46Eder, yeah.
25:48They were great players.
25:49Wonderful.
25:50Fantastic.
25:51Zico was something special as well.
25:55Still, I don't know if anybody agrees,
25:56still the best side I've ever seen from Brazil
25:59that never won a World Cup.
26:01They were absolutely outrageous.
26:03I always like to just go back in time with you, Ruffey, on that.
26:05And we are going to talk about hearts.
26:07Oof, Ali.
26:08Surprise?
26:09Dungeon 3?
26:10Hearts 1?
26:11It was that and I think Rugby Park
26:14were the two big surprise results of the weekend.
26:17I didn't see it coming at all.
26:18I think Steven Naismith would be really disappointed
26:20just with the nature of the performance.
26:23Tony Docherty, of course, just trying to pick up
26:25where they left off last year caused a few surprises.
26:28But I think pure from hearts.
26:31Yeah, absolutely.
26:323-1.
26:34And when you kick off,
26:35the last thing you want to see, Ruffey,
26:37when you kick off is Xander Clarke
26:39filling you full of confidence with a poor clearance.
26:43Yeah, but when that happens,
26:45you expect there's a couple of wee phases
26:48to go before it gets to the goal.
26:50You're expecting, OK, I've duffed that one.
26:52Maybe somebody will dig me out a hole here
26:54or somebody will make a tackle.
26:56But they never.
26:57They just came across the park,
26:59gave it to wee Scott Tiffany,
27:01who's got so much ability.
27:03I was reading there that he's taking a wee while
27:05to settle a year in full-time football
27:07and moving up there.
27:08So if that's the kind of form he's going to produce,
27:11Dundee fans are in for a treat
27:12because he's a great wee player to watch.
27:14Yeah, absolutely.
27:15And when you consider what happened the week before,
27:18I think the Dundee manager, Tony Docherty,
27:21was asking for more bravery.
27:24I think, in terms of the preparation,
27:26it was great this week.
27:27Really, really good.
27:28But the players need to take the credit for that
27:30because it's easy to put on a game plan.
27:32They need to execute that.
27:34And I thought we did that to the letter.
27:35I thought, as I say, we showed real organisation
27:38and a real mentality
27:39and being resolute against the ball.
27:41But the thing that pleased me most
27:43was, I thought, our bravery in possession.
27:44I had a wee go at them last week
27:46because of the first half at Dundee United.
27:48I thought we maybe weren't brave enough in possession.
27:52We were in the second half
27:53and we carried that on today
27:54and that's what pleases me most.
27:56Apart from a wee injury worry for Larkesh,
27:59they've got a nice mix of experience
28:02and young players that are attracting attention.
28:05I hope we can keep it all together.
28:07Yeah, I've been really impressed with Dundee.
28:09Not only this season but last season as well.
28:11I think Tony Docherty and Stuart Thayer
28:13have done a fantastic job up there.
28:14They blend all these players, different nationalities.
28:16A lot of lone players.
28:18It's difficult to gel all those players into a team
28:21and he's done that seamlessly at Dundee.
28:23Listen, it was 3-0.
28:25They were unlucky not to go 4-0.
28:27Hearts were shell-shocked.
28:28They were dreadful in the first half.
28:30Really, really poor.
28:31Second half,
28:32obviously they're just trying to get back into the game
28:34and maybe nick something.
28:36Really impressed with Dundee.
28:38Second half last week, carried it on to this week.
28:40You're right, Luke McCown.
28:41Excellent again.
28:42You know, Hibbs,
28:43obviously in for him.
28:44I think they make the bigger clubs
28:45and Hibbs in for him.
28:46I think he's very, very good.
28:49Lyle Cameron as well.
28:50Young players doing well.
28:51I think that Dundee,
28:52if you're a Dundee supporter,
28:54sitting with four points for two games,
28:56and one beating,
28:57I think you're looking forward to a great season ahead
28:59and maybe trying to get into Europe again.
29:00Yeah.
29:01Hearts really surprised me
29:03with how awful they were, Roffy.
29:05Yeah.
29:06I think when everybody's praising you
29:08for what you're doing and that,
29:09and then all of a sudden you're on the back foot
29:11and you're behind as a manager.
29:13You're looking for some kind of response
29:15and that'll be the disappointing thing for them.
29:17They never got a response from anybody.
29:19Nobody sort of collectively got them all together
29:21to get them back into the game.
29:23So yeah,
29:24I think Stephen Aismith will have a sleepless night
29:27thinking how all that happened.
29:28Yeah, absolutely.
29:30A few managers will be looking and thinking,
29:32okay, how much money have I got left in the budget?
29:34Who's out there?
29:35There's still Ryan Jack out there.
29:37We had an exclusive interview with him
29:39a couple of weeks ago,
29:40which obviously he highlighted the fact
29:43that he wants to get out there.
29:44He's got interest from clubs in Scotland
29:46and down South as well.
29:47There are players that some of the big clubs in Scotland
29:50might just sniff around him out with Celtic and Rangers.
29:53You never know.
29:54Dundee, good win for them.
29:56Lots more to talk about after the headlines.
29:59Hi there, I'm Kerry
30:00and here is your Daily News update
30:01on Monday the 12th of August,
30:03brought to you by Arnold Clarke.
30:04Rangers winger Vaclav Cerny says
30:06his patience is also wearing thin
30:08as he's desperate to get some more time on the pitch
30:10as Rangers gear up to take on Dynamo Kiev tomorrow night.
30:13I'm also not the most patient person,
30:17so I want to get there as soon as possible,
30:20but we have to use the brain
30:23and look at it every day.
30:26After Hearts fell to a 3-1 defeat
30:28at the hands of Dundee at the weekend,
30:29Frankie Kent says this is a warning sign
30:31for the club's new players
30:32as the Gorgies side have yet to pick up a win
30:34in their league campaign so far.
30:36It's a sort of learning curve for them
30:38to see early doors what's demanded
30:41and what's needed from us
30:45when you come to places like this.
30:46And after Manchester United's defeat
30:48in the Community Shield at the weekend,
30:50Eric Ten Hag said it's a good sign
30:51that the players are feeling the pain.
30:53We are disappointed and we have to feel the pain
30:57and everyone feels the pain
30:58and that's for me a good signal.
31:00For all the latest breaking headlines,
31:01be sure to tune in to PLZ Soccer's YouTube channel
31:03where we'll keep you updated
31:04across all of our social media platforms.
31:08Thanks Kerry.
31:09We will talk about Man United,
31:10Man City later on in the programme.
31:12Aberdeen 3, St Mirren 1.
31:14At the end of the game, Alison,
31:16there was just huge cheers
31:18because the Dons are back.
31:19I've been speaking to a few friends of mine
31:21who are Dons off,
31:22but by the way, they're as high as a kite.
31:24Yeah, I think you can sense the expectation
31:27and the excitement
31:28and another new regime coming in.
31:31But it's been an impressive start
31:33to the season for them.
31:34I thought that was an impressive one.
31:36Albeit, I think you'd have to say
31:38they're playing a St Mirren side
31:39who are not used to competing
31:42on a European front
31:43and then having to travel
31:44and play domestically
31:46which can be pretty gruelling.
31:48But I think, yeah, much to be excited about
31:51and of course a farewell party
31:53I think too for Bozsian-Majowski.
31:55At the end, as he took his farewell
31:57and took a final bow at Baton Rouge,
31:59I think we'd expect him to maybe go this week.
32:02But I think obviously
32:03a great deal of excitement,
32:05a great deal of anticipation
32:06but the proof will be in the pudding.
32:08And as ever, Ruffy,
32:09it was quite emotional actually.
32:11All the Dons fans,
32:12a nice tribute to a player
32:13who scored 44 goals over two seasons.
32:16He has been a really good signing for them.
32:18Yeah, you like to see if somebody's moving on
32:21that it works accordingly,
32:24that everybody's pulling in the right direction.
32:26Obviously, behind the scenes, agreed everything.
32:29It's just a matter of time.
32:31So for it to be handled well,
32:33a lot of players leave a club
32:35and don't get a chance to say to you.
32:37There's a lot of high-profile players
32:38who have been at a club for a long, long time
32:40and they get sold,
32:41whether it's during the closed season or whatever.
32:44But he's had a chance to say thanks a lot
32:47and they appreciated him.
32:50Did you see the flags
32:51that the Aberdeen boys had behind the goal?
32:53Yeah.
32:54They had a big flag.
32:55They needed four wee guys to flood up.
32:59You really put a lot of thought into watching these things.
33:02No, it's just that they threw them in.
33:04Enormous big flags.
33:08The place is bouncing.
33:09That's what you're saying.
33:10It's bouncing.
33:11But it had been bouncing last year as well
33:13and then had a wee dip for a wee while
33:15and then it would come back again.
33:17So the consistency level seems to be there this year
33:20and the players look as if they're enjoying it.
33:22Well, they're no longer going to be looking well
33:25as everybody's rightly saying,
33:27oh great, the manager's got a great start.
33:29There has actually,
33:31and there have been on several occasions,
33:34good starts and then, as Ruffey says,
33:36it fades away.
33:39If you sell them for seven...
33:40Now I know why not many Scottish clubs
33:42are biting at them.
33:43If you get seven million from Girona,
33:45all well and good for Aberdeen,
33:47but there's a real chance for them
33:49to spend money wisely.
33:52Yeah, I think they have.
33:53I think they've spent some money this season on players.
33:56I think they've just signed a Finnish guy
33:58for nearly a million euros.
34:00So I think they're going to spend some of that money.
34:02I don't think they're just going to bank it.
34:04They're going to try and improve the squad.
34:06I think they'll need to try and bring in a goalscorer.
34:08I think, obviously, it's difficult to replace Mijovski.
34:10He's been superb for Aberdeen.
34:13Great move for him to go to the Champions League.
34:15Go to him playing La Liga.
34:16Obviously, there's a lot of rumours
34:18about Celtic maybe in for him here.
34:20But seven million is quite a big outlay.
34:22But I think if he goes to Girona
34:24and does well in the Champions League,
34:26he can end up in the English Premier League.
34:28So it's good to see a vibrant Aberdeen back again.
34:30It's been a tough couple of seasons for them.
34:32Same with Hibs.
34:33You want to see your bigger clubs doing well
34:35and putting it up to Celtic and Rangers
34:37when they come up to Potaudrie.
34:40P McLaughlin says this is a good one, Ruffy,
34:42from our message board.
34:44Aberdeen haven't spent a million pounds
34:46on a player since Paul Bernard.
34:48I can't think of anybody
34:50that they have spent that sort of money on.
34:52It'll be a long while.
34:53This might be one of those years
34:55if suddenly they do get top draw for Mijovski.
34:59Because you have to find the goals from somewhere.
35:01Well, one, they've done a Celtic, if you like,
35:04in terms of investing in a player,
35:06bringing him in and then selling him
35:08at a significant profit.
35:10Now what you would like to see
35:12is that money recycled into the team.
35:14And it gives them options, I think,
35:17before the end of the window
35:19to go and try and add to the depth of the squad,
35:21add a bit of quality.
35:23Bojan Mijovski's goal scoring stats
35:25are there for everyone to see
35:27in terms of what he's offered
35:29across the last couple of campaigns.
35:31It leaves a hole, it leaves a void in the team.
35:33So you need someone to go in and try and fill it.
35:36I think they will try and source some of that money.
35:38I think they'll try and spend some of it
35:40before the window.
35:41They're not going to go and spend all of it.
35:42They certainly won't spend all of it on one player.
35:44But they could spread it throughout the squad.
35:46Yeah, Papaguay getting a goal,
35:48McGrath, Bezouin.
35:50It's St Mirren that you look at
35:53and you think to yourself,
35:54I didn't see that coming.
35:56But can we completely and utterly
35:59look at it and say it's because
36:01Kylian, St Mirren, or any European football?
36:05I think that's down to the volume of games
36:07and the quality of games
36:08that the opposition are playing.
36:10I think that when you're involved in Europe
36:12and you're playing Thursday, Sunday,
36:13it's very difficult.
36:14In St Mirren, they've not got a big squad.
36:16They've got maybe 13, 14 players
36:18that you can trust to play in these games.
36:20They've obviously got a squad of 19, 20.
36:22But there's a lot of players that you wouldn't
36:24start in games like that.
36:26I think it's going to be difficult for them
36:28and Camarnet.
36:29The further they go in Europe,
36:30Peter, and the same with Heartsburg
36:31and the group stages,
36:32they're going to struggle with the volume of games.
36:34I would just completely write that off,
36:36that result,
36:37because I think they've got a huge game
36:39coming up in Norway on Thursday.
36:41St Mirren boss Stephen Robinson,
36:43certainly when we put out this answer
36:45that he gave at the weekend,
36:46it caused a fair bit of consternation
36:48among the Dons fans.
36:50This was his take on the game.
36:52I felt we were in total control of the whole game.
36:54We only had ourselves to blame today for losing.
36:57We were in control of the ball
36:59for the first two goals.
37:00We lose a corner from a throw-in
37:02we had comfortable possession from.
37:03We didn't defend the corner the way we set up
37:05to defend it.
37:06It was actually two of our players
37:07running into each other
37:08and Pelleri falls over
37:10because of running into one of our players.
37:12So that's disappointing.
37:13That's preventable.
37:14And the second one,
37:15our game,
37:16we're in total control of the ball.
37:18We make the wrong decision
37:19and we get punished for it
37:20from a mis-kick as well.
37:21So sometimes you get punished.
37:23The third goal is just poor defending.
37:25So all three goals,
37:26very, very preventable.
37:28Okay.
37:29That's his take on it, Roffy.
37:31Yeah, I've been in total control
37:33at Parkhead and Ibrox
37:34and could beat six-nothing.
37:36So it doesn't work.
37:38People look at the result
37:39at the end of the day.
37:41I think when they scored,
37:42when they made it 1-8,
37:43you would believe that
37:44there wasn't much between the teams.
37:46But I think Aberdeen had
37:47most of the play
37:48and most of the shots at goal.
37:49So,
37:50I think at the end of the day,
37:52I thought he tried to
37:54look at the European game
37:55and that game
37:56and rest two or three plays.
37:57I think they get caught,
37:58you know,
37:59trying to no plays,
38:00full eleven.
38:01But I think that was the same
38:02with Comanek as well.
38:03But it never worked
38:04because, as Tam said,
38:05they've not got strength in depth.
38:06So,
38:07at the end of the day,
38:08I think,
38:09I get where he's coming from.
38:10I think at 1-8,
38:11he thought he might have
38:12seen that game out for 1-8.
38:13But it never happened.
38:14Yeah, we're going to talk
38:15about Comanek in a moment.
38:16But,
38:17I hate to sound like a killjoy
38:18so early on
38:19because I really am trying
38:20because of the looks
38:21you give me, Alistair.
38:22I'm really trying to be optimistic.
38:23And sometimes when,
38:24I don't know if you've noticed
38:25at the moment,
38:26but sometimes when all of you
38:27open your mouth,
38:28I'm resisting.
38:29You know,
38:30it's like I'm just tentatively
38:31just shadow-jabbing.
38:32Street your mind.
38:33Shadow-jabbing at the moment.
38:34I don't know because,
38:35obviously...
38:36If you're not quoting it,
38:37do you think Comanek
38:38and St Myrna are out?
38:39Yes.
38:40Yeah,
38:41I think St Myrna are out.
38:42I think Comanek are out.
38:43And I think there's
38:44lots to be said
38:45in this transfer window
38:46when the time is right.
38:47But,
38:48I'm giving everybody
38:49the benefit of the doubt.
38:50I just can't see
38:51any chance
38:52that St Myrna
38:53are out.
38:54I just can't see
38:55St Myrna going there
38:56and winning.
38:57I just thought,
38:58unless something drastic,
38:59you know,
39:00there's a drastic change
39:01in brand,
39:02they controlled the game
39:03at the Smyrna Stadium.
39:04Yeah,
39:05I would agree with you.
39:06In actual fact,
39:07I think most
39:08St Myrna fans
39:09would agree with you.
39:10I think
39:11St Myrna were lucky
39:12to get out of it
39:13still hanging in there.
39:14Obviously,
39:15Ole Sane gave them
39:16a lifeline,
39:17that late goal
39:18that gives them
39:19something to cling on to.
39:20It gives them
39:21a bit of hope.
39:22But,
39:23I thought
39:24St Myrna were off it.
39:25I thought Bran
39:26dominated the game.
39:27I thought they could have been,
39:28had Bran been more clinical,
39:29I think they would have
39:30put the game to bed.
39:31I think you saw
39:32that the Norwegians
39:33are deeper into their season.
39:34You know,
39:35I think they were,
39:36what,
39:3718, 19 games
39:38into their campaign.
39:39They looked sharper,
39:40fitter,
39:41pressing St Myrna
39:42all over the pitch.
39:43It just,
39:44it could have been
39:453-0,
39:46really,
39:47by half time.
39:48The only good thing is,
39:49St Myrna,
39:50I think,
39:51was it just never really
39:52turned up in the night.
39:53You knew they could go up a level,
39:54could play better.
39:55You'll see that
39:56this week.
39:57They really missed
39:58the influence
39:59of Mark O'Hara
40:00last week,
40:01I felt.
40:02I don't think he'll be fit.
40:03Or certainly,
40:04it doesn't seem to be
40:05that he'll be fit
40:06for Thursday night's game.
40:07But,
40:08I think it's just
40:09too big an ask now
40:10to go and try
40:11and get the win.
40:12Right,
40:13so,
40:14Ali and I
40:15have got St Myrna out.
40:16Yeah,
40:17I think so, yeah.
40:18Yeah,
40:19they're getting too good.
40:21Bran, sorry.
40:22Yeah, Bran,
40:23Bergen's where they play.
40:25Kilmarnock,
40:26I mean,
40:27they lost heavily.
40:28They lost a man,
40:29though.
40:30Was it
40:31worthy of a second
40:32bookable offence?
40:37I don't know.
40:38I actually still,
40:39I'm not entirely sure.
40:41I can see,
40:42I can see why
40:43it was given.
40:44Yeah.
40:45I think when you look at
40:46what we've seen
40:47across recent seasons,
40:48I think you can see why
40:49it was.
40:50But,
40:51again,
40:52you go down,
40:53you've got a numerical
40:54disadvantage to try and
40:55contend with.
40:56It's always in danger
40:57of getting away from you.
40:58Ruffey?
40:59Yeah,
41:00I thought he slid in.
41:01You know,
41:02the rules,
41:03you know,
41:04from distance
41:05and the way the guy
41:06was rolling about
41:07on the ground.
41:08The referee's always
41:09thought,
41:10well,
41:11there's contact there.
41:12So,
41:13he's on a yellow,
41:14so,
41:15it's not a straight red
41:16at the end,
41:17but it's definitely
41:18the second one
41:19could have just been
41:20a straight red.
41:21I thought he had a shocker.
41:22He was at fault
41:23for the first goal as well.
41:24I think the wee boy,
41:25Sidibe,
41:26got in front of him
41:27and nicked it,
41:28and nicked it into the net
41:29and two terrible tackles.
41:30He was all over the place,
41:31Joe Wright,
41:32and he's really killed
41:33Comarner there
41:34with the red card.
41:35Apart from that...
41:36Talking about Sidibe.
41:37Eh?
41:38How good did he look
41:39for St. Johnson?
41:40The funny thing is,
41:41Sidibe last season,
41:42I think,
41:43was,
41:44in the last four or five games,
41:45crucial
41:46to them staying up.
41:47I mean,
41:48he mugged Hibbs
41:49at Easter Road.
41:50I thought,
41:51not only his goals,
41:52for the first booking,
41:53when he gets,
41:54he's out in the corner flag
41:55and he turns inside
41:56and,
41:57I think the big boy,
41:58Joe Wright,
41:59pulls him down
42:00for the first booking.
42:01He was a handful all day,
42:02took his goals
42:03tremendously well.
42:04He looks like
42:05a terrific player
42:06for St. Johnson.
42:07Yeah,
42:08absolutely.
42:09Anybody that scores
42:1015 to 20 goals
42:11this season
42:12in the lower half
42:13is usually the difference
42:14between playoff
42:15and relegation,
42:16I think.
42:17Yeah,
42:18it's amazing
42:19how,
42:20even after a 3-0 win,
42:21Craig Levine
42:22can still
42:23find the negative.
42:24I think
42:25the scoreline
42:26didn't reflect
42:27our
42:28defensive prowess
42:29today.
42:30I thought we were
42:31sloppy at times.
42:32We gave up chances
42:33that could have
42:34been
42:35scored
42:36and,
42:37I think,
42:38it's amazing
42:39how,
42:40even after a 3-0 win,
42:41Craig Levine
42:42can still
42:43find the negative.

54:21Man City won.
54:22Man United won.
54:23City won on penalties.
54:25Jonny Evans,
54:26howler of a penalty kick.
54:27Jonny Evans, howler of a penalty kick.
54:28Jonny Evans, howler of a penalty kick.
54:29Yeah, not a great start,
54:30Jonny Evans, howler of a penalty kick.
54:31Jonny Evans, howler of a penalty kick.
54:32Jonny Evans, howler of a penalty kick.
54:33Not a great start, is it?
54:34Not a great start, is it?
54:35But yeah,
54:36I thought it was poor,
54:37really poor.
54:38But it just invites pressure
54:39when you have a result like that
54:40to kick the season off.
54:41It just invites
54:42a wee bit of pressure
54:43on you before anything
54:44gets going.
54:45They're not near
54:46anywhere getting into
54:47the European places
54:48at the moment
54:49unless they make
54:50some significant signing changes.
54:51Well, they've still got a bit of time
54:52over the next few weeks
54:53but certainly
54:54the early evidence
54:55wouldn't suggest so.
54:56Ruffey,
54:57who's your tip?
54:58City again?
54:59I think City.
55:00There's none of the other teams
55:01absolutely
55:02stamped to any kind of authority.
55:05Pre-season,
55:06you cannae judge by that.
55:07Well, the league starts on Friday.
55:09I think you've got to go Man City
55:11because even though they are
55:13maybe lose a couple of players,
55:15they've still got enough money
55:16to go out there and buy somebody.
55:19I've got a wee feeling
55:20for Chelsea this year.
55:21Yeah?
55:22Yeah, I think they've...
55:23You don't want a game!
55:24No, I've got a wee feeling
55:26for Chelsea.
55:27He's got one of those
55:28feelings that he used to have.
55:31That squad of 325 players.
55:33I don't know about Man City this year.
55:35No?
55:36I don't know if they can continue
55:37to just keep winning every year.
55:38I'll tell you one thing,
55:39it's not going to be Arsenal.
55:40Scott says Arsenal.
55:41I mean, I can't see Arsenal
55:42doing anything.
55:44But over and above that,
55:45I can't even see
55:46my beloved Liverpool
55:48doing something yet
55:49because there's just nothing
55:50to inspire me at the moment.
55:52Not seeing anybody yet, no?
55:53Well, that's the problem.
55:54I think it's been a slow window
55:55for everyone.
55:56It's been really slow.
55:57I'm not going to knock you
55:58on that, Ali.
55:59Lots of managers want players in
56:00and they're not getting them
56:01quick enough.
56:02Yeah, I think though
56:03across the board you've seen
56:04that it's been sluggish.
56:05The market has been slow.
56:06I just wonder if it might now
56:07start to pick up and accelerate
56:09a wee bit as you go into
56:10the final few windows
56:11and of course games now
56:13starting to come in.
56:14There's a bit more urgency
56:15about it.
