00:00:00Welcome to the football show on PLZ Soccer's YouTube channel. I'm Peter
00:00:08Martin, Alan Ruff, Darren Jackson and Alison McConnell here with me on this
00:00:12Friday. Delighted to have your company and if you're on our YouTube channel
00:00:16don't forget to hit that subscribe button, tell your friends, like, share and
00:00:19follow us across all the social media. If you download the app you'll get all the
00:00:24breaking news at your fingertips. Lots to talk about on the program of course
00:00:28Celtic and Aberdeen have the chance to stretch their lead over Dundee United
00:00:33and Rangers before of course they two meet on the Sunday. We'll discuss that.
00:00:38Blow to Rangers, Danilo is out for a month. Kieran Bowie is out for four
00:00:43months which may be prompted Hibbs to sign Dwight Gale. We'll discuss that.
00:00:48Manager of the month is Jimmy Tolleen. Player of the month is Callum McGregor.
00:00:52So lots to get our teeth into. Let's first of all talk about something that
00:00:56we had a chance to look over over the last couple of days, Ruffy, which is just
00:01:03basically coming out. It was Willie Callum talking about the VAR mistakes.
00:01:07It's going to be a monthly video. I mean it must be absolutely riveting just
00:01:11listening to a referee talking about VAR. That'll be an absolute crowdstormer, that one.
00:01:16Yeah, but it's something we were all moaning about last year. There was no
00:01:20dialogue. There was nobody coming out and telling people why they made these
00:01:24decisions. A lot of them were baffling to us. We didn't think it was going to be a
00:01:27monthly show. I mean unless Willie suddenly starts singing on it and they
00:01:31get, you know, locks of axe on Ruffy, it's not going to be... You never know. You wouldn't put in by the SFA and then kick him out.
00:01:37Do you know what I'd love, Ruffy? I'd love to see the feed on the YouTube channel as Willie.
00:01:43If it's anything like our feed, Darren, it'll be mental. You know, people just
00:01:48absolutely hammering him. Is that fair, Ali? Not at all. I think we do the general
00:01:53public who go to football matches a gross disservice.
00:01:57Oh, dearie me. Anyway, listen, the positive aspect of it is it clears up a few things.
00:02:03Yeah, but that can go the other way as well. Well, we're about to ask you if it does or not.
00:02:09It can go the opposite way as well. You know, if they come out and say, yeah, we got that wrong.
00:02:14You know, that opens up another avenue for people to go, well, wait a minute.
00:02:19We'd have got a penalty there. We could be sitting at the bottom six or decisions that they're going to come out and say.
00:02:25Well, look at that one, Ruffy. The penalty. Which one?
00:02:29Kyogre against Comarnac. Yeah, that's the one they're talking about.
00:02:31I mean, the dialogue right away. They've not even looked at it. They've just said...
00:02:37Well, it was good for them. It stood big. Yeah.
00:02:41It was good for them to explain some of this stuff. The Comarnac one,
00:02:46they were telling us that you can't look at VAR if it's outside the box.
00:02:50Yeah, right. No, I didn't know that was a rule in there.
00:02:54So they're coming out and telling you things. From a goalkeeper's point of view?
00:02:57No, from VAR's point of view. You know, the Comarnac one where he was out,
00:03:01he got tackled at the edge of the 18-yard box against Armstrong.
00:03:04And he got flicked on the back of his ankle. Yeah, they were looking for a penalty.
00:03:09Well, they came out and said, people wanted to know, why did you not go to VAR?
00:03:12Because it wasn't in the box, or the referee deemed it wasn't in the box.
00:03:16That's why we never looked at it. There's a lot of things about VAR I don't think we all know.
00:03:20Well, the one thing he said was he was critical of Matthew McDermott's body language
00:03:26leading up to what he believes was a correctly awarded League Cup goal scored by Cyril Dessers
00:03:31against St. Johnson. That caused a lot of consternation.
00:03:35Yeah, it did. I was actually working at that game.
00:03:37And I think at the time there had been a viewpoint that
00:03:41although his whistle didn't go,
00:03:43he seemed to gesture for a free kick to go St. Johnson's way.
00:03:48Craig Lagoon was pretty irked in the aftermath of it, bit his tongue,
00:03:52didn't want to court a fine, but bit his tongue.
00:03:55But he felt as though his players had stopped playing.
00:03:59I think there's an argument to say that play had gone on.
00:04:02But yeah, it definitely caused a lot of controversy that particular moment.
00:04:07He was critical of how he had positioned himself in the build-up to that moment.
00:04:12Although he did say he didn't blow his whistle,
00:04:14which had been the accusation during the game that the whistle went
00:04:17and then play was allowed to continue.
00:04:19Yeah, listen, I take your point you're saying, oh, it causes a bit of consternation afterwards,
00:04:24especially if they say they got it wrong.
00:04:26But they've got it wrong before, long before VAR came in.
00:04:30And they've looked at things and they've had to hold their hands up.
00:04:34I remember the late and very amiable and approachable John Fleming at the SFE.
00:04:40He was a lovely man.
00:04:41And he would phone people and say, you know, listen, we got it wrong.
00:04:44Sorry, you have to move on.
00:04:46You have to accept that mistakes will be made.
00:04:48So I am all for the transparency.
00:04:50I think Willie Cullum deserves credit for saying, right,
00:04:54I'm being facetious about the monthly programme,
00:04:56but Willie's going to go on there.
00:04:58They're going to clear up things.
00:04:59And hopefully, you know, as these little mistakes come up,
00:05:03the referees and the assistants and the VAR officials will start to get a better grasp,
00:05:08especially for the handball, which caused all sorts of problems.
00:05:12Yeah, that's one that nobody knows about, Peter.
00:05:15I mean, every time you see a defender now, he goes to make a tackle
00:05:20and his arms are right away, they're behind his back.
00:05:23And that's not, that's not the way to tackle.
00:05:26Yeah, it's not a natural position.
00:05:28You've got to use your body.
00:05:31And I mean, it's, yeah, if it's going in the net and it hits your hand, it's a penalty.
00:05:36But that's, some of it's not deliberate.
00:05:39You know what I mean?
00:05:39And listen, I've always been critical of referees
00:05:43and I totally understand how hard a job it is.
00:05:48But it does hurt me when I see, I'm sorry.
00:05:52And it's cost a team three points.
00:05:56Yeah.
00:05:57And a manager's maybe down in the bottom of the league.
00:05:59And listen, it's not the referee's fault that he's down.
00:06:02But that gives them a wee bit of confidence and a sorry.
00:06:06Doesn't work.
00:06:07Doesn't work for me.
00:06:08Yeah, but I'll tell you where it does work, Darren.
00:06:10And I take your point on this.
00:06:11But where it does work is the fact that if you understand from day one,
00:06:17which we've talked to Ad Nauseam, yourself, everybody,
00:06:20if you understand from day one that the VAR was never going to solve everything,
00:06:25what it was going to do was create a higher percentage of getting decisions right
00:06:30by seeing things from different angles and hopefully,
00:06:34which didn't materialise in the early days, quickly come to a decision.
00:06:37So what they've done is they've managed to reduce the percentage of mistakes,
00:06:42but of the mistakes that are still there, even with VAR,
00:06:45you'll never take away the pain.
00:06:47That pain that you're talking about, that contentious decision
00:06:51that they say they hold their hands up.
00:06:53Well, I'd rather they hold their hands up, Ali, at 10%
00:06:57rather than the old days when it used to be maybe 30%.
00:07:01Yeah, I would agree with you.
00:07:02And I also think the thing about this show that you're talking about is
00:07:06I think it lends itself towards an element of transparency
00:07:10that we would welcome, that people have been crying out for for a long time.
00:07:14I think the common explanation is how you reached a decision,
00:07:18which I think is to be welcomed.
00:07:19You might not always agree with the decision itself or how they got to it,
00:07:22but I think having an explanation, seeing they're working, if you like,
00:07:26is a good way to present yourself.
00:07:29I think it brings the SFA, it brings referees into a more modern culture.
00:07:34I think we have been critical at times of our VAR silence
00:07:38around decisions and clubs and teams, managers have been frustrated
00:07:42as to how decisions are given.
00:07:44I'm not saying this won't be a cure-all for some of those frustrations,
00:07:47but I think it will be helpful to understand how the position was got to.
00:07:52And I think if there is an acknowledgement of an error,
00:07:55I think it's a move in the right direction.
00:07:56And I think anything that encourages dialogue between both players,
00:08:01coaches and referees, I think is a good thing.
00:08:04Yeah, absolutely.
00:08:04I can see how Craig Levine could be angry about it.
00:08:09He's got to be angry with his defenders as well because...
00:08:11Yes.
00:08:13He played on and put the ball in the net.
00:08:15Play until, and they say they heard the whistle,
00:08:17but no one really heard the whistle, Peter, do you know what I mean?
00:08:20So play until the game's dead, do you know what I mean?
00:08:25So that one I can see from both points of view, Craig being angry with the decision
00:08:32and I would think being angry with his defenders.
00:08:35Yeah, absolutely.
00:08:36The monthly one, the figures will go through the roof if it's a Rangers-Celtic game.
00:08:41Will they admit they got a goal wrong in the last minute?
00:08:44That would be fantastic.
00:08:46I'll lay you odds of two to one on that there is no live feed
00:08:51that they allow the messages to come through because sometimes on here,
00:08:55and thankfully the majority of people who post messages
00:08:58while we put out a live show, the majority,
00:09:00now I think a really high percentage, are sensible football fans.
00:09:05You do get the odd nutcase from the early days, Ruffey.
00:09:08There was a higher percentage of them, but we managed to get rid of them.
00:09:11And influence them to go back to fanzines.
00:09:13I think most of them addressed me, most of them said that.
00:09:16Yes, Alison's got a nickname on the social media at the moment,
00:09:22which is very unkind, I have to say.
00:09:24But every now and then when she gets out of hand,
00:09:27a reminder of her nickname does, that's all I'm saying to you.
00:09:29And by the way, I don't know if you influence your family,
00:09:32but Chris Fraser says it's good to see Darren Jackson looking well.
00:09:36Doesn't get any better than that.
00:09:37Great to see Darren's cousin just posting that message for us.
00:09:42Yeah, lots of people talking about the referees and Paul Brady,
00:09:45why wasn't the Kyogo Challenge reviewed?
00:09:47The ref should have been sent to the monitor.
00:09:49I think everybody looks at that and was absolutely aghast at the time.
00:09:52But listen, we've got transparency.
00:09:55Let's be positive about it and say well done Willie Colham.
00:09:57There will be, I think you're right Ruffey,
00:09:59as soon as it involves the Celtic and Rangers,
00:10:01there's all sorts of angry people.
00:10:04Do you think you would applaud Willie Colham for it?
00:10:07I think previous occupants of that post may have been reticent
00:10:12to put themselves in that kind of position.
00:10:14I think you'd have to applaud him
00:10:15for being willing to come out and show face really
00:10:19and know that you're on a hiding to nothing in certain elements of it.
00:10:23I think it's a step in the right direction.
00:10:25The other VAR thing was to help the referees.
00:10:29I think this has put an added pressure on the referees now.
00:10:32Because if you're the referee that's going to come out every month
00:10:35and get something wrong,
00:10:37then it's going to fall on you heavily somewhere down the road.
00:10:39Well, of course, because one person has mentioned here on our feed, Ruffey,
00:10:43it's Tone, who says referees should be demoted to lower leagues
00:10:48with persistent mistakes.
00:10:49They do. They don't get cup finals.
00:10:52They don't get semi-finals.
00:10:53They're judged on how well they do.
00:10:57I mean, it's a standard that a lot of people don't know that,
00:11:00but they do get reviewed and they get assessed.
00:11:02I might be being harsh here, but it's right.
00:11:06Do you know what I mean? It's right.
00:11:07Because if a player makes that many mistakes, he's dropped.
00:11:09Absolutely.
00:11:10He doesn't get back on the team.
00:11:11Yeah, but I think from your point of view,
00:11:13listen, the one thing that this episode will do on a monthly basis,
00:11:18and remember, Willie's speaking to referees daily,
00:11:21is once you get clarity on things,
00:11:24once you try and get to a consistent decision on a type of incident,
00:11:29then hopefully those mistakes become less and less.
00:11:33It's always a situation where I'd rather that some referees
00:11:38were able to, you have to be big enough to take that 5% of criticism
00:11:43that comes if there's a smaller amount of mistakes.
00:11:46But remember, we had a situation where it was just non-stop,
00:11:49referees, conspiracy.
00:11:51It's a big Rangers fan, he's a Celtic fan.
00:11:52I've seen this guy in a pub.
00:11:54It just does your head in.
00:11:55This is a situation where we're getting to a lower percentage
00:11:59of mistakes.
00:12:00There will always be, they'll never go away,
00:12:02but at least we're getting to a situation where it's not constantly,
00:12:06you know, looking at people and looking into their background
00:12:11and all this nonsense and then saying,
00:12:13this is definitely somebody who's got an agenda
00:12:15or this is a mistake and they never addressed it.
00:12:18We're getting it slightly better.
00:12:20I have to read this out, Ali, because it's, you know,
00:12:24people listen regularly and if I'm going to read out
00:12:28Darren's compliment, I've got to read one out for you.
00:12:32Derek in Glasgow says, I applaud the use of reticent.
00:12:35Well done. There you go, fantastic.
00:12:39Roughly thought reticent had been signed by Partick Thistle
00:12:42as a left back, but nevertheless.
00:12:45Let's have a look at the fixtures for the weekend
00:12:47and there's some Humdinger games for us to enjoy.
00:12:50Aberdeen against Motherwell, I'll be up there to see
00:12:52what all the fuss is about. Celtic against Harps.
00:12:55Pibbs against St Johnston, Ross County Dundee, St Mirren
00:12:58against Kilmarnock and Dundee United against Rangers on the Sunday.
00:13:02So by the time Dundee United and Rangers lock horns at Tannadise,
00:13:06there could be an even bigger gap at the top for Celtic
00:13:10and Aberdeen if they were to win their games respectively.
00:13:13So let's talk about that first one. Celtic, Harps, Johnston,
00:13:16Taylor, Forest, all trained.
00:13:18So, you know, everything seems to be rosy for them going into this match.
00:13:23Yes, it certainly does, you know, and they've proved again
00:13:26the first 10-15 minutes at the end of the games at home,
00:13:29you know, the opposition have to be on their toes.
00:13:31They can't afford to lose in that space of time
00:13:36as Celtic just go into overdrive.
00:13:37So, I mean, I think Harps will have to have some kind of game plan
00:13:41because things aren't going particularly well for them just now.
00:13:44In the dressing room, there'll be apprehension.
00:13:46They can't say they're going to be positive going into this game,
00:13:49thinking they're going to win it.
00:13:51So I think the best they can do at this,
00:13:53the really best they can be would be a draw or damage limitations.
00:13:57Yeah, this is what the Celtic manager and the camp had to say ahead of the game.
00:14:02Of course, I think the emphasis from Brendan Rodgers
00:14:07is basically trying to look forward to the fact that they've got Greg Taylor
00:14:14looking to try and get him on a longer-term deal, I'm led to believe,
00:14:19which gives you an indication of the strength they've got now in depth
00:14:23and the competition they've got.
00:14:25Yeah, absolutely.
00:14:25I think left back is an area where Celtic have been looking for reinforcements.
00:14:30They obviously managed to bring in the boy from Barcelona in the window
00:14:35and I thought it was interesting.
00:14:36I thought Greg Taylor played out his skin against Rangers in the game
00:14:40just before the international break.
00:14:42I think clearly it's an area of the park where they've needed a bit of competition.
00:14:47However, I think it'd be harsh on Taylor just now to go out the team.
00:14:50I think he's done enough to stay in for the time being
00:14:53and it'll be interesting to see.
00:14:55I think he's probably warranted a new deal at Celtic.
00:14:58Yeah, absolutely.
00:14:59And I think the other thing about it,
00:15:01a lot of people are looking and thinking maybe his time's up.
00:15:04I don't think, I don't see that at all.
00:15:05I think Darren, as you know, Greg Taylor, like everybody else,
00:15:11you thrive off a bit of competition.
00:15:14100%, yeah.
00:15:15And they brought the young boy in and we don't know what he's like.
00:15:17Everyone thinks because he's come from Barcelona he's going to be a superstar.
00:15:20Yeah.
00:15:21But they've just signed him on a five-year deal,
00:15:22so he mustn't be a bad player.
00:15:24But I think, Alisson, I think you're 100% right.
00:15:27I think against Rangers he was outstanding,
00:15:29and as was Scales.
00:15:31As was the whole team, but as was Scales.
00:15:34And those guys, and Brendan said it himself,
00:15:37that Scales is not sexy, but what would I have done without him?
00:15:40And I think Greg Taylor as well.
00:15:42The way they play, the way he goes into the middle.
00:15:44Boys with great, humble attitude.
00:15:46Boys that you can see go in, work their socks off,
00:15:49do their job for the team.
00:15:50Again, I think that's what Brendan's saying,
00:15:53the Scottish boys or the British boys don't get as much as the foreign players,
00:15:58which is right, it's always been the same.
00:16:01But I think Greg Taylor does deserve a new deal.
00:16:05I think he has been fantastic.
00:16:07Everyone will always look, how can they do the Champions League?
00:16:11But it's not just Greg Taylor that Celtic have struggled in the Champions League.
00:16:16It's all over the pitch, but yeah, I think he's been outstanding.
00:16:21Of course, Celtic themselves as a team have been outstanding
00:16:25since the start of the season,
00:16:26and obviously on a high after the win over Rangers.
00:16:29Interestingly enough, Ruffey, only one more match away from equaling a record
00:16:33that I think was back in 1906, 1907, which is...
00:16:38Ruffey's first season.
00:16:39Yeah, exactly, just moved from Departic Thistle.
00:16:45It's five games without conceding a goal in the league.
00:16:50Yeah, and they've been impressive, particularly at home.
00:16:53You know, I'm not going to start knocking the other teams
00:16:56because they go and do their best,
00:16:57but they're way short of Celtic,
00:16:59you know, with the players that Celtic have got just now.
00:17:02And we've been talking about this Celtic team,
00:17:05you know, there doesn't seem to be any flaws,
00:17:07particularly in the home competition.
00:17:09So I haven't seen any weak link yet.
00:17:12I mean, there's nobody really set about them,
00:17:14you know, and there's nobody had them pinned against the wall
00:17:18or under pressure.
00:17:19So until that happens, which will probably be the Champions League
00:17:22when they come against better sides,
00:17:24but certainly at home, at this moment in time, they look invincible.
00:17:28Yeah, oh, managed to get that wee line in.
00:17:31You could probably say the first 10 minutes of the Old Firm game,
00:17:33they were under pressure a bit.
00:17:36Yeah, but they came through and the way they got a hold of the game
00:17:39and kind of dominated the game,
00:17:41it's just experience.
00:17:44They've got great experience.
00:17:46And I think the last two goalkeepers have been unbelievable signings.
00:17:50Yeah.
00:17:50I think Speichels, when they were talking about signing him,
00:17:53people are obviously looking and saying,
00:17:55I mean, Brendan, obviously, it was great that he's worked with them before.
00:17:58Yeah.
00:17:59But I think he's been tremendous.
00:18:02Yeah, we are about to find out
00:18:04how tremendous he is in the Champions League group stages.
00:18:08And it's a big week coming up.
00:18:10We'll be looking at all the European games in the Champions League
00:18:14and then the Europa League and Conference.
00:18:17As far as this is concerned, this game, it's Celtic against Hearts.
00:18:20Hearts need it like a hole in the head.
00:18:22There's all the talk that Steven Acewood could be under real pressure.
00:18:25Alisson was having a chat with a former Jumbo.
00:18:28He played for Celtic as well.
00:18:29Paul Hartley, who's now the manager at Cove,
00:18:32about the pressure on Steven Acewood.
00:18:37And we'll come back to that just shortly.
00:18:39Obviously, from his point of view,
00:18:41Paul Hartley in the discussions with you, Ali,
00:18:44had mentioned that quite simply he thinks he's got credit in the bank.
00:18:49Yeah, that was a phrase he used.
00:18:50He was saying he thinks it would be harsh to judge Steven on tomorrow's game,
00:18:55regardless of how that may go.
00:18:57And also that he felt as though the European aspect of this season
00:19:01had been difficult for Hearts to deal with.
00:19:03He was saying that clubs outwith of Celtic and Rangers
00:19:06toil at the opening weeks of the season
00:19:08when you see them trying to compete in European qualifiers
00:19:12and come back to domestic action,
00:19:14that they all don't really have the resources to be able to do so.
00:19:18So he was saying he thinks that,
00:19:20given a bit of time over the next couple of months,
00:19:22that Steven Naismith will take Hearts back to where they were
00:19:26towards the end of last season.
00:19:27And I think his point was that he needs to be given a wee bit of time.
00:19:33It's just too early to make a judgment just yet on him.
00:19:36I'll get the thoughts of you guys in a moment.
00:19:37Kerry Pollock was through at the Orium to hear from the manager.
00:19:41This weekend in the Scottish Premiership,
00:19:43Hearts take on Celtic in Glasgow.
00:19:44And with 10 games without a win,
00:19:46Steven Naismith admits the football hasn't been the best,
00:19:48but something else also isn't going in his favour.
00:19:51There's been moments that we've not been good enough.
00:19:53There's been small details in games that have cost us big.
00:19:57And then I also think we've not had any bit of luck.
00:20:00The last Dundee United goal comes from a deflection,
00:20:03because then in the first half,
00:20:04Penrice has a deflected shot and it just goes past the post.
00:20:07These wee moments aren't going for us as well.
00:20:09And when that all adds up, it costs you.
00:20:12Midfielder Kammy Devlin has penned his future to the club until 2026
00:20:16and has made it clear what his ambitions are
00:20:18of what he would like to achieve during his time in the capital.
00:20:21The one thing that I've made quite clear since I've been here
00:20:24is obviously coming third is great.
00:20:26And, you know, when I came here,
00:20:28I wasn't really sure on European football.
00:20:29I didn't really know that was a possibility.
00:20:31That's the kind of thing you're saying.
00:20:32I didn't know what I was getting into.
00:20:34So I've done that, you know, two and a half years last year we played,
00:20:37but we weren't in the group stage.
00:20:38So this year we got that to look forward to and end my first season.
00:20:41But the one thing I've made so clear that I want to do
00:20:45in the next few years and beyond is win a cup.
00:20:49I just feel like that would be the best thing, you know.
00:20:52Premiership action returns for the Tincastle outfit this weekend
00:20:55at Celtic Park kick-off. Is that three o'clock?
00:20:58Yeah, Kammy Devlin, New Deal, 2026.
00:21:01The one thing that he hasn't had in his favour,
00:21:05and this is a big problem, Darren.
00:21:06If you don't get your striker, your top man,
00:21:08who's been banging the goals in last season, if he's not scoring,
00:21:11then you can suddenly feel the heat and you're in trouble.
00:21:15I mean, that's two seasons in a row he's been phenomenal, really, Lawrence.
00:21:19And when he's not scoring, that's been the problem.
00:21:23When he's not scoring over the last two seasons,
00:21:25nobody else is really scoring.
00:21:26Vargas will maybe get five or six goals a season,
00:21:30which everyone's going to have to stand up and be counting.
00:21:33Tomorrow, I think you're right about what Paul Harley said.
00:21:36It's hard to judge tomorrow.
00:21:38The way Celtic are playing, the way Hearts are playing,
00:21:40listen, you never know what can happen in a game.
00:21:44Celtic could win this game comfortably if Hearts don't.
00:21:49You always say in the first 20 minutes,
00:21:52because Celtic will come out the blocks,
00:21:54they've not had a game for two weeks,
00:21:55they'll be buzzing to get started.
00:21:57Does a hammering put them under pressure?
00:22:00I think a hammering always puts anyone under pressure
00:22:02if you're losing games, Peter.
00:22:04I think it's very hard to judge someone on...
00:22:08He's not getting judged on Celtic,
00:22:10he's not getting judged on 1-1 in 16.
00:22:13Stephen will know that's not good enough for a Hearts manager.
00:22:17But I don't think tomorrow should come into the equation
00:22:22should he go or should he not go.
00:22:24He'll be looking for his players.
00:22:26They have to be brave tomorrow.
00:22:27There's one thing, without the ball,
00:22:29you know you're not going to have a lot of the ball.
00:22:30You're going to have to be brave without the ball.
00:22:33But then when they get the ball,
00:22:34again, you always say you have to be brave with the ball
00:22:37and if they're going to do anything.
00:22:39Because you can't be pinned in for 90 minutes.
00:22:42They need to try and be brave and get up the pitch
00:22:44and try and cause Celtic problems,
00:22:46which other teams have caused Celtic problems.
00:22:49Again, Ruffey's...
00:22:51I don't think he meant they're going to be invincible,
00:22:53but just now they do look.
00:22:55But you never know until you have a go at them.
00:22:57Yeah, the other big problem here is
00:22:59he's been without key players.
00:23:01Beninga I thought was an excellent player from last season.
00:23:04The other thing about it as well, Ruffey,
00:23:06is he managed to turn it around last season
00:23:08by beating Celtic.
00:23:10So that was a positive for him.
00:23:11And then they went on a run of maybe 11 games
00:23:14without losing.
00:23:16So there's a key point where he was able to turn it around
00:23:19when he was under pressure last season
00:23:21and then they just comfortably finished third
00:23:23to his credit.
00:23:25So it's about trying to get that right mix
00:23:29and obviously having a right goal
00:23:31and not allowing Celtic,
00:23:33a different type of Celtic this time around I have to say,
00:23:36than the one they faced last season.
00:23:38Because Celtic were stuttering at times last season.
00:23:41Yeah, but again I think some of the Hearts fans
00:23:43have to be a bit realistic
00:23:45because before the season started
00:23:47all the fans were going,
00:23:48how good is he bringing in all the players early?
00:23:51He's brought in four or five players.
00:23:53He's a way ahead of everybody else.
00:23:55Sometimes these players take time to settle.
00:23:57It doesn't matter who they are.
00:23:59I don't think Spittle has settled particularly.
00:24:02Dander for me was the best player of the league last year.
00:24:06He hasn't really set the Heather on fire yet
00:24:08but I still think Darn's right.
00:24:11You can't judge him on this Celtic one.
00:24:13I think he's got enough bonus points with the board.
00:24:16I think unfortunately that Hearts segment of support
00:24:19that I've never really got behind them
00:24:21are just not helping.
00:24:23And a bad result tomorrow,
00:24:25that segment will just jump on a bad one.
00:24:27Yeah, what the bandwagon?
00:24:29I was just wondering if there was a new type of wagon
00:24:31that you'd invented there, Ruffey.
00:24:33Yeah, I speak to a lot of Hearts fans,
00:24:35speaking to one this afternoon, an absolute diehard.
00:24:37And he was saying, I said,
00:24:39are you going to the game?
00:24:40And he says, not a chance.
00:24:41I'm going to go and play golf.
00:24:43Because he just fears the worst
00:24:44against the Celtic side, he thinks.
00:24:46And he again said to me,
00:24:49a lot of Hearts fans want him out.
00:24:52There's that groundswell.
00:24:53I hope that the board stick with him.
00:24:55I like him.
00:24:56I think he's got credit, as Paul Hartley mentioned.
00:24:59I think they should stick with him.
00:25:01Whether they will or not is another matter.
00:25:03Thanks to so many of you
00:25:05for just posting your thoughts on that game.
00:25:09Ruffey, your prediction?
00:25:11I think Hearts are on the end of a hiding tomorrow.
00:25:13I think Celtic will win 4-0.
00:25:15And I very rarely say 4-0 on this programme.
00:25:18Well, I think Craig Gordon will have something to say about that.
00:25:21I think it's always good going back to your old club
00:25:24and putting on a performance.
00:25:25I think you probably will do.
00:25:273-0?
00:25:28No, no, no.
00:25:29I think he'll keep it, didn't he?
00:25:312-0.
00:25:32A comfortable 2 or a really tough one?
00:25:34A really comfortable 2.
00:25:35Yeah.
00:25:36Darn.
00:25:37It's hard to pair two ex-clubs
00:25:39and take great time in both of them.
00:25:41It's hard to say, but...
00:25:44Yeah, I can see 3-0.
00:25:473-0 Celtic.
00:25:48The great thing about having you on, Darn,
00:25:50is every club is your ex-club.
00:25:51I love that, by the way.
00:25:52Only you and Chick Charlie
00:25:54have got an extensive knowledge of every division.
00:25:57Only Darn have played in Derbys.
00:25:59How many Derbys have you played in?
00:26:02Celtic 1, 2...
00:26:03I've played in three.
00:26:04With Dundee, Edinburgh and North East.
00:26:07Yeah.
00:26:08Did you play...
00:26:09Did you get a Newcastle Sunderland?
00:26:11Yeah.
00:26:12As well? Brilliant.
00:26:13Newcastle, Meadowbank, Celtic, Harps,
00:26:16Hibs, Dundee United.
00:26:19Anybody else I've missed?
00:26:20St Johnston.
00:26:21And St Johnston at the tail end as well.
00:26:23And China for eight days.
00:26:24China, yeah.
00:26:25Eight days.
00:26:26I was gutted you never won Player of the Year in that.
00:26:28Coventry.
00:26:29Yeah, Coventry as well.
00:26:30China, eight days.
00:26:32I knew you would like the front.
00:26:35You didn't know that, did you, Ali?
00:26:36I didn't.
00:26:37That was the day he just kept blanking my call
00:26:39as I wanted an insight into Chinese football.
00:26:41I'll tell you, we got a real insight 24 hours later
00:26:44at Tanadise.
00:26:45It's Dundee United against Rangers on the Sunday
00:26:48and Blair Malloy's been out there
00:26:51at the Rangers training centre
00:26:52to find out what Philippe Clement
00:26:55makes of not only Rangers' predicament at the moment
00:26:58after losing that game to Celtic,
00:27:00but all the talk about the captain, James Tavernier.
00:27:03It's been almost two weeks since the scenes
00:27:05of some Rangers fans confronting their team
00:27:07outside Ibrox after that 3-0 Old Firm derby defeat
00:27:10swept across social media.
00:27:12And manager Philippe Clement said
00:27:14although he understands the frustration of fans,
00:27:16he does not think the anger shown that day
00:27:18is indicative of the entire support.
00:27:20We had the same frustration
00:27:23and the anger inside of us.
00:27:26So, in a way, you understand things.
00:27:30In another way, it depends what words are used in that way.
00:27:34So, that happened that moment
00:27:37in the heat of the night or the afternoon.
00:27:40I've been now 10, 12 days longer in Glasgow after also.
00:27:46And I met a lot of fans who reacted
00:27:50in a totally different way
00:27:52and were very positive and supporting the team and the club.
00:27:57Much of the ire of Rangers fans
00:27:59was directed at captain James Tavernier.
00:28:01And his manager has praised the maturity
00:28:03with which he's dealt with the situation,
00:28:05but admits the pressure he faces
00:28:07is just part and parcel of being a captain.
00:28:09I had the same experiences before in Bruges
00:28:15and I was there 10 years like that.
00:28:19And in the moments when it's really good,
00:28:22it's really nice to be captain
00:28:24and in the moments when the team doesn't perform
00:28:27and it's not only about you, it's about the team
00:28:30and you don't reach the expectations of the fans at the moment,
00:28:34you're the first one that they talk to
00:28:37or that they yell to at that moment.
00:28:40So, I had these moments also in my career.
00:28:42It's part of being a captain.
00:28:44It's part of being a captain
00:28:45and I have to say he takes it really mature.
00:28:48The Rangers manager will be hoping to get his side back on track
00:28:51as they take on Dundee United at Tannedyce
00:28:53this Sunday at 12pm.
00:28:55Yeah, really looking at it,
00:28:57it could be an absolute cracker.
00:29:00Lots of people obviously will give their opinion
00:29:02on how they think it's going to go.
00:29:04It's certainly a tough call
00:29:05when you consider Dundee United's start to the season.
00:29:07Yeah, I think they've been very impressive.
00:29:09I think Dundee United will feel as though there's a freedom
00:29:14in this game.
00:29:15I think they'll also sense a weakness in Rangers
00:29:18just the way that they've started the season
00:29:20and also the noise just around the team
00:29:23and around the club in the aftermath of that game
00:29:26and defeat to Celtic.
00:29:28I think Rangers will probably win.
00:29:30I think they'll be too strong for Dundee United.
00:29:33I think they'll prevail simply because they have to.
00:29:35I think anything other than three points on Sunday
00:29:39will invite another fresh wave of pressure under Philip Clement.
00:29:43I think they will, for that reason,
00:29:45go and get the win by whatever means necessary.
00:29:48But I think it'll be a difficult afternoon for them.
00:29:50I think they'll know that they've been in a game.
00:29:52The fallout from the defeat to Celtic has been dramatic, Ruffey.
00:29:57At times I thought some of it was way over the top.
00:30:01Nobody likes to lose a Glasgow derby.
00:30:04But over and above that, it's early days.
00:30:08He certainly was on the charm offensive this week,
00:30:11Philip Clement, speaking to fans at the Charity Foundation dinner.
00:30:16I think the only thing I would say about him is
00:30:20I think he's walking a tightrope now all the way to January 2nd.
00:30:23They have to stay on Celtic's coattails.
00:30:26At any interview he does or anything he says,
00:30:29he's trying to keep everything together.
00:30:31Obviously, they carry on with the stand and Celtic beating them.
00:30:35He's putting out excuses there
00:30:37and putting out a lot of things
00:30:40that he hopes some of the Rangers supporters will buy into.
00:30:43That there isn't a big gap and all that.
00:30:45Carry on.
00:30:46But he himself will know the truth, that there is a gap there.
00:30:49So you're right, he needs to get performances.
00:30:51He needs to get wins.
00:30:53I'm different for Ali.
00:30:56I don't think Dundee United have beaten anybody of any significance this year.
00:31:00So I'm going to go, Rangers, to win this one 2-0.
00:31:04So a comfortable 2-0 for you.
00:31:07They've beaten Hearts, St Johnston and St Mirren
00:31:11and Ross County and drew with Dundee.
00:31:13And then of course, as you mentioned, the early games in the League Cup.
00:31:18I don't know where the story gathered pace.
00:31:20It could be an agent.
00:31:21It could be maybe James Tavernier was testing the ground
00:31:24or maybe Rangers were trying to flush out somebody to buy him.
00:31:27I didn't see James Tavernier leaving.
00:31:31I just thought that whole thing, if it did gather pace
00:31:34and was something that had any substance to it,
00:31:37it would be an act of lunacy on my part.
00:31:39Yeah, well you could only see it that they wanted to get him off the wager wheel, Peter.
00:31:44Because I would imagine he's one of the highest paid players there.
00:31:47Because what he's done.
00:31:49And listen, I've been critical of James Tavernier to the extent of
00:31:54he's been there eight years and he's only won one title.
00:32:00But everything else, his play, his goals, his assists, his quality,
00:32:06his deliveries into the box, Rangers need Tavernier just now.
00:32:13Philip Clement is talking about, I've had it when I was at Bruges
00:32:18and I'm not being disrespectful to Bruges.
00:32:20I'll be nothing like Rangers in Celtic.
00:32:24I'll be nothing like, and James Tavernier is under pressure
00:32:27because he is captain.
00:32:28And this is where you've probably played under unbelievable captains
00:32:33that need to stand up and tell the players what this,
00:32:37I don't know if they have meetings inside and all that,
00:32:40tell the players what's needed here and what this is all about,
00:32:43what the club's all about.
00:32:44That's what they need just now.
00:32:46And I think at Tanadise, Dunn United, I can only see Jim Goodwin saying
00:32:51we need to start, get right out the blocks here
00:32:54and put them under severe pressure.
00:32:56Especially, I always like going down the hill in the second half
00:33:00into the Dunn United fans.
00:33:02But I think going down the hill in the first half
00:33:05and having a right go and putting Rangers under pressure.
00:33:10But again, I think Rangers will stand up to it tomorrow,
00:33:14I think on Sunday.
00:33:16I think they'll win 2-1.
00:33:19The Tavernier thing, they've not really helped themselves
00:33:22with all the speculation about this.
00:33:24Is he going, is he not going?
00:33:26Because as soon as he makes a mistake, fans are just fans.
00:33:29They go, does he want to be here or does he not want to be here?
00:33:32I don't think he's played the way he has.
00:33:35He's never got far.
00:33:36And take the Celtic game out of it.
00:33:38Even some of his crossings, crossing out the park,
00:33:42you've never seen that from James Tavernier.
00:33:44He does look a different type of player.
00:33:46He does look like, does he want to leave?
00:33:50And I'm not saying he played bad to leave,
00:33:53but his confidence looks shattered as well
00:33:56because his quality is incredible.
00:33:59But it's just not been the standard that he's set.
00:34:02Yeah, another thing that will never go away is,
00:34:05and this is I think very much a British thing,
00:34:08we tend to try and highlight the negatives of what he can't do
00:34:11rather than all the positives of what he has done.
00:34:14He's a full-back who's scored over 130 goals.
00:34:17I mean, give me peace.
00:34:19I don't know many right-backs that have scored 130 goals
00:34:23unless you're Danny Alves or Cafu.
00:34:26But the problem here is,
00:34:29sometimes we're always tagging someone and saying,
00:34:33right, you're a right-back and that's it, you can do nothing else.
00:34:36Maybe another manager would come in and see him,
00:34:39and I don't see him as a right-back.
00:34:41I just don't see him as a right-back.
00:34:43Celtic fans will not bother
00:34:45if Alistair Johnson never scores another goal for Celtic.
00:34:48Yeah, defence.
00:34:49As long as he defends.
00:34:50Yeah, absolutely.
00:34:51Because you've got players up the pitch,
00:34:52they've got all the players,
00:34:53the two midfield players,
00:34:54they've got the three forwards that will score the goals.
00:34:57So it's been unfair to Tavernier.
00:34:59So the fans that are relying on, by the way,
00:35:02at times, relying on Tavernier to get the goals,
00:35:05him and Decers are really the ones that get the goals.
00:35:08But as I say, Celtic fans will not bother
00:35:10if Alistair Johnson doesn't score.
00:35:12Which is a sad indictment of that team, Ali, that those two...
00:35:15Yeah, absolutely.
00:35:16I think not just this team,
00:35:17even previous teams too, previous seasons.
00:35:20I think he's shouldered a lot of responsibility.
00:35:23I would say there are very clear defensive deficiencies
00:35:26within his game.
00:35:27I think you can look and see the goal return is fantastic,
00:35:31coming from a right-back.
00:35:32I think he's dug Rangers out at Hull a lot of times
00:35:34with big goals at key moments in games.
00:35:37However, I think when Rangers play quality opposition in Europe,
00:35:42when they come up against Celtic,
00:35:44you do see that he is exposed in a defensive sense.
00:35:47Yeah.
00:35:48Okay, what about Aberdeen?
00:35:50They've got Motherwell.
00:35:51Up at Patagio, I'm looking forward to it, Raff.
00:35:52I thought I'd nip up there to the Granite City,
00:35:54see what all the fuss is about.
00:35:55Yeah, well, as I said last week,
00:35:57any time I see the highlights up there,
00:35:59the banners are up, the flags are up,
00:36:00behind that goal, they're everywhere.
00:36:02You love flags.
00:36:03I haven't seen it at Aberdeen for a long, long time.
00:36:06And they've bought into what the new manager's doing.
00:36:09You see that tomorrow, the place looks abuzz.
00:36:12Back to where it was before.
00:36:14Again, we've talked about who they've beat.
00:36:16They've not really beaten any of the big ones yet,
00:36:18but they're winning games,
00:36:20and the fans have bought into everything he's done,
00:36:22and they're playing good football.
00:36:23Yeah, I can't wait to see what reception Duke will get.
00:36:26We were going to start a campaign,
00:36:28the search for Duke, but he showed up.
00:36:30He's back there.
00:36:31Here's the manager of the one, Jimmy Tully.
00:36:33For me, it's not the most important thing.
00:36:36The most important thing is here.
00:36:39You can't change the past anyway.
00:36:46Now we have to focus on the future
00:36:49and what we can give to the team from now and forward.
00:36:52That's more interesting for me,
00:36:54and not what's happened.
00:36:56They had a good talk, the club and him,
00:36:59and now he's back and he's integrated well with the players.
00:37:02Now we have to be optimistic about the situation
00:37:05and give everything in the training.
00:37:07Give something for the team.
00:37:09That's my focus.
00:37:11Can you imagine if he walked into Celtic dressing room?
00:37:15He'd have got stank.
00:37:17He'd have to have a really strong build
00:37:19walking into a dressing room
00:37:21with the way players are and a bit of banter.
00:37:23He'd have to be strong enough to take any banter
00:37:25that's coming his way.
00:37:27I think he'll get pelted in that dressing room.
00:37:30Yeah, players like to get pelted.
00:37:35I would have enjoyed that.
00:37:37There was fair banter when you had your brain operation.
00:37:41I don't think too many people let you off the hook there, did they?
00:37:44Oh no, no.
00:37:47I'll tell you the story.
00:37:49When Stubbsy, Jackie, Tommy and Simon came into the hospital
00:37:56and I was lying in my bed with tubes coming out of my nose
00:37:59and coming out of my head.
00:38:01I was lying there in the UK and all that.
00:38:03I did television and all that.
00:38:05Just the remote control.
00:38:08He says, right, we're away now and all that.
00:38:10He just took the remote control away and put a porno in there.
00:38:22I didn't expect you to say that
00:38:24but that's exactly the type of thing
00:38:26that those characters would do.
00:38:28To be fair, that's the camaraderie of it all.
00:38:30But listen, he's got to come back.
00:38:32We all know the circumstances.
00:38:34You don't come back, you won't be able to play anywhere.
00:38:37So he's back.
00:38:39And boy, it's an impressive run of games.
00:38:43And if they win against Motherwell, then...
00:38:47It's interesting, isn't it?
00:38:49It would be maybe a different story
00:38:51if he was walking into a team who hadn't been winning.
00:38:53So you're coming back into a whole groundswell
00:38:57of optimism, encouragement.
00:38:59This wave of excitement about Jimmy Tillian.
00:39:03Whether or not it's grounded in reality
00:39:05is a whole other thing.
00:39:07We'll discuss that at the end of October.
00:39:09That's a whole other thing.
00:39:11But at the minute, these fans are delighted
00:39:13with the team, with the direction the team is going.
00:39:17There is a feel-good factor around Petardrie.
00:39:20And I think that may just extend
00:39:22to a welcome back to the fold.
00:39:25I think if they hadn't been winning it,
00:39:27they might have found the reception very different.
00:39:29But you look at Motherwell and what they're doing,
00:39:34and you see Aberdeen at home,
00:39:37everything seems to be...
00:39:39Not only a feel-good factor,
00:39:41but Aberdeen at home, if they're winning,
00:39:43suddenly the fans think,
00:39:45we're going to go and follow them in great numbers
00:39:47away from home as well.
00:39:48Yeah, and I think what you've seen is
00:39:49they've ground out wins in certain games.
00:39:51Certain games they'll look as though
00:39:53they've maybe been about to drop points.
00:39:55The last game before the international break,
00:39:57we have a mini-pitch invasion when there's a winner.
00:40:00I think they've got themselves over the line
00:40:03when they've needed to.
00:40:04It's maybe not always been fantastic performances,
00:40:08but they've been winning games.
00:40:09And I think that's so important
00:40:10for a new manager coming in.
00:40:12Just being able to set a very immediate tone
00:40:16and have everyone on side.
00:40:17You're not fighting against the current at any point.
00:40:20You've got everyone behind you.
00:40:21And it's a case now of being able to lay a foundation
00:40:24and build upon it.
00:40:25I think they'll win tomorrow.
00:40:27I think they'll beat Mullerwell.
00:40:29I fancy them to be the third force this season, I think.
00:40:34I fancy them.
00:40:36Yeah, I fancy them on Saturday.
00:40:38Listen, we all know it's all about confidence.
00:40:41And you're 100% right about Duke.
00:40:44If they'd been losing,
00:40:47it would have been putting an arm around them.
00:40:48Yeah, we need you back in.
00:40:50But they don't need him now.
00:40:52He has to make up with everybody
00:40:55to try and get back in the team.
00:40:57And it can only be a positive
00:40:58because he was a good player for them.
00:40:59So you're bringing someone that you know on the bench
00:41:01that can come on and do something.
00:41:04But listen, it's all about luck as well.
00:41:10When we saw Stephen Naismith's interview,
00:41:14the Dunedin United goal was a deflection
00:41:16and they had a deflection in the first half.
00:41:18It went the wrong side of the post.
00:41:19When things are going for you, it's brilliant.
00:41:21And Aberdeen will take everything just now.
00:41:23You spoke about how Aberdeen have always had
00:41:25a great away support, Peter, haven't they?
00:41:27Everywhere you go, it's incredible.
00:41:30But they needed to get Petaudry.
00:41:32I've always believed that Aberdeen,
00:41:34I think everyone, they've lived in the past
00:41:37for too long.
00:41:39They need to make new memories now
00:41:41and just now, they're making them.
00:41:43Yeah, I'm looking at their side.
00:41:45I mean, there's a new generation of,
00:41:48I would say there's a new generation of Aberdeen fans
00:41:51and prior to that, a lot of Aberdeen fans
00:41:55are not obsessed by Fergie.
00:41:57They just want to see a team give their all
00:42:00and try and win games.
00:42:02The difference now is, and I think this is
00:42:04the key element of it, Ruffey,
00:42:06they've got players that have got a trick.
00:42:09Now, Keskinen looks as if he's not bad,
00:42:11he's got something to offer.
00:42:13He got absolute pelters in midweek
00:42:15for not playing in his teammate
00:42:17in that game against England
00:42:18that could have given them a lead.
00:42:20He looks good, Nielsen looks good.
00:42:23They're talking about McGrath being able to move.
00:42:27McGrath's been able to move a little bit
00:42:29further forward with the freedom now
00:42:31along with Shinny.
00:42:33So they've got this kind of a solidity.
00:42:36They've got the ability to win games,
00:42:38which is something that previous Aberdeen sides
00:42:41over the last couple of years,
00:42:43they were giving away goals at the back
00:42:44that were just criminal
00:42:45and it cost managers jobs.
00:42:47Yeah, last year was horrendous
00:42:48if you were an Aberdeen supporter,
00:42:50to be in the bottom six for most of the season
00:42:53and to hang on in there waiting to change.
00:42:56I think it was the centre-halves
00:42:57where most of the problem,
00:42:59I think the goalkeeper was okay,
00:43:01but they've got the young boys at McKenzie,
00:43:03the full-back in there.
00:43:05I think they're looking a wee bit solid yet,
00:43:08but again, I know they're on a good run.
00:43:10They haven't played a Hibbs or Harts
00:43:12or Rangers or Celtic.
00:43:14I think if they'd come through their games
00:43:16with good results,
00:43:17then you would be going,
00:43:18well, this is a new Aberdeen side.
00:43:21Until that actually happens,
00:43:22then I'm still waiting.
00:43:24Calm down.
00:43:25October's the big month, Ruffie.
00:43:27We've said to you,
00:43:28we're looking at Aberdeen
00:43:29and we're saying to ourselves,
00:43:30right, they've got nine wins.
00:43:33They've got Motherwell,
00:43:34then they've got Spartans,
00:43:35Winnable, Dundee, Winnable, Harts,
00:43:38and then in the middle of October,
00:43:40they've got Celtic, Dundee United and Rangers.
00:43:43And that's the time,
00:43:44once we get to our programme on,
00:43:47I think it's,
00:43:48if I have a look here,
00:43:50the 2nd of November is the,
00:43:53in fact, the Wednesday is
00:43:54Aberdeen against Rangers at Bataudrie
00:43:56on the 30th of October.
00:43:58So on the 31st,
00:44:00the show is going to be
00:44:01an absolute howitzer, Ruffie,
00:44:02because we'll get a chance to.
00:44:03I would go as far as to say
00:44:04that game could be
00:44:07maybe a decision
00:44:08who's going to be second or third.
00:44:11What, the Aberdeen Rangers game?
00:44:13Not at the end of the season,
00:44:14after that game.
00:44:16Oh, that's a big call, Ruffie.
00:44:17No, with the run-up,
00:44:18you've given me Aberdeen there.
00:44:20The Rangers would have to
00:44:21equal everything they've done
00:44:23coming up to that game
00:44:24and that game,
00:44:25I think it'll be tight
00:44:26and I think if Aberdeen win it,
00:44:27they could probably be second.
00:44:29There you are.
00:44:30Ruffie's taking the heat off everybody.
00:44:33By the way, Darren,
00:44:34you can say anything now,
00:44:36all the way to the end of the show.
00:44:38Ruffie's taken the heat off his alley,
00:44:39hasn't he?
00:44:41Yeah, I think Rangers will be second.
00:44:43You agree with me?
00:44:44No, I think Rangers will be
00:44:45comfortably second this season.
00:44:47Comfortably?
00:44:48No, I'm talking about up to that game.
00:44:50Oh, so you're not talking about
00:44:51the championing in its entirety?
00:44:52No, I'm talking about up to that,
00:44:53win that game, win that game.
00:44:55And the teams that Aberdeen
00:44:56are going to play,
00:44:58I would think Rangers
00:44:59are probably harder games
00:45:01than what Aberdeen have got
00:45:02up until that game.
00:45:04I agree with you, Ali,
00:45:05I think Rangers will be second.
00:45:07Come May, I think.
00:45:08People have a run
00:45:09and they do very well.
00:45:11And once they've got
00:45:12a couple of injuries,
00:45:13it's hard to replace that.
00:45:15There's that many teams,
00:45:17was it Aberdeen a few years ago?
00:45:20Celtic.
00:45:21Celtic, yes,
00:45:22and they always thought
00:45:24Aberdeen can do it.
00:45:26What have Rangers got
00:45:27then up to that game?
00:45:28Well, I was just about to say
00:45:29to you, Ruffie,
00:45:30since you opened your gob.
00:45:32They've got Dundee United away,
00:45:33they've got Dundee at home,
00:45:35they've got Malmo away,
00:45:37because remember,
00:45:38they've got European games,
00:45:39they've got Malmo away,
00:45:40they've got Hibs at home,
00:45:41Lyon, then St Johnstone at home,
00:45:43and then they've got
00:45:44Kilmarnock, Stour Brookrest,
00:45:46and then St Mirren,
00:45:47and then Aberdeen
00:45:48on the 30th of October.
00:45:50Now the one thing that goes
00:45:51against it all,
00:45:52the one thing,
00:45:53is Europe.
00:45:54Rangers have always been
00:45:55in the last five years.
00:45:56You say they've got
00:45:57St Johnstone, they've got Hibs,
00:45:58and then they've got Dundee,
00:46:00Hibs and St Johnstone at home.
00:46:02Yeah.
00:46:03Yeah, I mean,
00:46:04they would think
00:46:05that's a good run for us.
00:46:07Yeah.
00:46:08Absolutely.
00:46:09I mean,
00:46:10I think,
00:46:11you know,
00:46:12as I've said,
00:46:13I think he's walking
00:46:14a tightrope,
00:46:15where he's got to make sure
00:46:16that they're on Celtic's tail
00:46:18till he gets to Ibrox
00:46:20on January 2nd.
00:46:21And January 2nd is where
00:46:22Philippe Clamont,
00:46:23mentioned after the
00:46:25Old Firm game,
00:46:26quite simply,
00:46:27will see in January.
00:46:29So he's thrown down
00:46:30the gauntlet to say
00:46:31we'll be a different team,
00:46:32we'll see how much
00:46:33of a gap there is,
00:46:34we'll see a different Rangers
00:46:36on January 2nd,
00:46:37which,
00:46:38I think,
00:46:39I mean,
00:46:40he said it after the game,
00:46:41we're not putting words
00:46:42in his mouth,
00:46:43that's exactly what he said,
00:46:44and I think that's really,
00:46:46kind of,
00:46:47it's not a pressure for him,
00:46:48he's just said,
00:46:49they've got to get on a run now
00:46:50all the way to January.
00:46:51I think it does put him
00:46:52under pressure,
00:46:53that remark,
00:46:54and I think what it does is,
00:46:55there are five points
00:46:56between the two teams
00:46:57at the minute,
00:46:58I think Rangers can't afford
00:46:59another slip.
00:47:00It's as simple as that.
00:47:01It needs to be perfect
00:47:02from here on in
00:47:03until January,
00:47:04and then hope that they can
00:47:05get back to Celtic
00:47:06when they face them
00:47:07at Ibrox.
00:47:08Sean Maxwell says,
00:47:09Rangers must win a cup
00:47:10or the manager gets his P45.
00:47:11Flying Haggis says,
00:47:12Ruffy's backpedalling,
00:47:13Peter,
00:47:14he's a coward.
00:47:15You're absolutely right,
00:47:16that's 100%,
00:47:17I can't argue with you,
00:47:18because,
00:47:19see as soon as he knows,
00:47:20he's potentially going to be
00:47:21a clip on social media,
00:47:22you can hear the beep,
00:47:23beep,
00:47:24beep of the car reversing,
00:47:25and that's him
00:47:26trying to get out of it.
00:47:27That's what I say
00:47:28after that game,
00:47:29not at the end
00:47:30of the season,
00:47:31not at the end
00:47:32of the season,
00:47:33not at the end
00:47:34of the season,
00:47:35not at the end
00:47:36of the season.
00:47:37Right, okay,
00:47:38Hebbs against St Johnston,
00:47:39I'll tell you one thing,
00:47:40did we give a prediction
00:47:41for Aberdeen against Motherwell?
00:47:44I think Aberdeen
00:47:45won 2-1,
00:47:46I'm going 2-0.
00:47:472-0.
00:47:482-1.
00:47:492-1, okay.
00:47:50Hebbs against St Johnston,
00:47:52I'll tell you,
00:47:53if I was the Hebbs manager,
00:47:54I'd be raging with,
00:47:55you know,
00:47:56the Scotland under-21 boss
00:47:59with Kieran Bowie now,
00:48:01four months out,
00:48:03I mean,
00:48:04this boy was trying
00:48:05to get his fitness going.
00:48:06Yeah, it's brutal,
00:48:07it's brutal for both of them,
00:48:08for the player
00:48:09and for the club,
00:48:10I think,
00:48:11four months,
00:48:12you're talking
00:48:13potentially 2025
00:48:14before you're seeing him
00:48:15back in action.
00:48:16Yeah,
00:48:17I think it'll be,
00:48:18I think he looked lively,
00:48:20he looked bright
00:48:21coming on for Hebbs
00:48:22across recent games,
00:48:23I think that'll be
00:48:24a huge blow
00:48:25for David Gray.
00:48:26Yeah, I agree with that,
00:48:28he looked,
00:48:29when he came on
00:48:30and scored,
00:48:31if he'd been out
00:48:32for a wee while,
00:48:33that would've given him
00:48:34a lot of confidence
00:48:35into the Scotland squad,
00:48:36you know,
00:48:37again,
00:48:38Hebbs will be getting
00:48:39a better player
00:48:40coming back
00:48:41and unfortunately,
00:48:42he's got that injury
00:48:43but they brought
00:48:44somebody else in.
00:48:45Yeah,
00:48:46do you like Dwight Gale?
00:48:47I thought he was a good player.
00:48:48Yeah,
00:48:49yeah,
00:48:50I think so
00:48:51but I just think
00:48:52Hebbs have got to start
00:48:53winning home games,
00:48:54I think Hebbs supporters
00:48:55need to be buying
00:48:56into everything
00:48:57they're trying to do.
00:48:58Yeah,
00:48:59I mean,
00:49:00you have to discuss
00:49:01the narrative
00:49:02that comes out
00:49:03right across
00:49:04Scottish football,
00:49:05from fans,
00:49:06from everyone,
00:49:07pundits,
00:49:08radio stations,
00:49:09newspapers,
00:49:10pressure on managers now
00:49:11to immediately
00:49:12hit the ground running
00:49:13is unbelievable.
00:49:14I think David Gray
00:49:15should just be told,
00:49:16listen David,
00:49:17you're going to hit
00:49:18the skids along the way here,
00:49:19we're going to try
00:49:20and support you,
00:49:21you've got Malky there
00:49:22to help you,
00:49:23get on with it.
00:49:24100%,
00:49:25Peter,
00:49:26you were at the
00:49:27Dundee game,
00:49:28now they're a whisker
00:49:29away from winning
00:49:30the game.
00:49:31Then they go to
00:49:32Kilmarnock
00:49:33and they lose
00:49:34their penalty
00:49:35in the last minute.
00:49:36I know it's hindsight
00:49:37but they could have
00:49:38had six points
00:49:39and David Gray's
00:49:40a good manager.
00:49:41He's made a decision
00:49:42by bringing
00:49:43Bashiri on
00:49:44with not long to go
00:49:45and it gave
00:49:46Dundee territory
00:49:47in the middle
00:49:48of the pitch
00:49:49and they got
00:49:50deeper and deeper
00:49:51but if they win
00:49:52the game
00:49:53you're thinking
00:49:54well he's
00:49:55shut up shop
00:49:56and defensively
00:49:57they've done well
00:49:58so you've got
00:49:59to make decisions
00:50:00and you probably
00:50:01look back
00:50:02and think
00:50:03I should have
00:50:04done that
00:50:05but what I don't like
00:50:06is people like that
00:50:07it's too big a job
00:50:08for his first job
00:50:09but he's been under
00:50:10I think three managers
00:50:11so he's learnt
00:50:12under three managers
00:50:13do you know what I mean?
00:50:14So I see
00:50:15and I think
00:50:16I'm going again
00:50:17tomorrow
00:50:18I think he's got
00:50:19all the backing
00:50:20and I think the Bowie one
00:50:21is a major blow
00:50:22because you saw
00:50:23when he came on
00:50:24by the way
00:50:25he caused Celtic
00:50:26problems when he came on
00:50:27very good
00:50:28I mean
00:50:29when I was a scout
00:50:30with Blackpool
00:50:31I tried to sign him
00:50:32for Blackpool
00:50:33he went to Fulham
00:50:34which I would have
00:50:35gone to Fulham as well
00:50:36but I rate him
00:50:37very highly
00:50:38and it must be
00:50:39a massive blow
00:50:40that
00:50:41I spoke to David
00:50:42I was at the
00:50:4321 game
00:50:44on the Friday night
00:50:45and I said
00:50:46it's good that he's
00:50:47getting
00:50:48again 60 minutes
00:50:49because they didn't
00:50:50want to play him
00:50:51too early
00:50:52because they were
00:50:53worried
00:50:54so it must be
00:50:55a blow
00:50:56he's played
00:50:57Scotland
00:50:58two games
00:50:59and he's out
00:51:00not just a
00:51:01hamstring
00:51:02he's out for
00:51:03four months
00:51:04so he's a
00:51:05major blow
00:51:06but I think you're
00:51:07right with
00:51:08Dwight Gale
00:51:09I looked
00:51:10I'm 34
00:51:11and everyone
00:51:12looks after
00:51:13themselves now
00:51:14but he does
00:51:15he looks really
00:51:16fit
00:51:17he looks slim
00:51:18and he's always
00:51:19scored goals
00:51:20and his attitude
00:51:21no airs and graces
00:51:22about it
00:51:23he just gets on
00:51:24with it
00:51:25I think
00:51:26something
00:51:27dramatic
00:51:28has happened
00:51:29I've watched him
00:51:30play
00:51:31and I liked him
00:51:32at Crystal Palace
00:51:33Newcastle
00:51:34I think he's a
00:51:35dangerous player
00:51:36I think it's a
00:51:37great signing for him
00:51:38just thought I'd
00:51:39mention just one
00:51:40thing today
00:51:41it's Pat Stanton's
00:51:4280th birthday
00:51:43I think I speak
00:51:44from the heart
00:51:45here because
00:51:46I'm a huge fan
00:51:47of Pat Stanton
00:51:48player
00:51:49and as a man
00:51:50we've had him
00:51:51on the show
00:51:52I think if Pat
00:51:53Stanton was available
00:51:54yeah and I think
00:51:55any supporter that's
00:51:56seen him
00:51:57would agree with that
00:51:58he strolled
00:51:59through games
00:52:00you're right
00:52:01when you said
00:52:02he's a fantastic
00:52:03judge of a player
00:52:04since he brought me
00:52:05to him
00:52:06yeah
00:52:07no but
00:52:08anybody's worked
00:52:09under Pat
00:52:10ask any of the
00:52:11boys
00:52:12Ralph Callaghan
00:52:13big George Stewart
00:52:14anybody
00:52:15wee rookie
00:52:16absolute gentleman
00:52:17in the game
00:52:18and someday
00:52:19there's no many
00:52:20times in your
00:52:21career you get to
00:52:22play for a manager
00:52:23and they win
00:52:24games for
00:52:25yeah
00:52:26you know
00:52:27and I think
00:52:28that sums them up
00:52:29wonderful man
00:52:30great man
00:52:31Hibbs
00:52:32I think they're
00:52:33going to win
00:52:342-1
00:52:35I'm going to go
00:52:36for a draw
00:52:37yeah
00:52:38you seen something
00:52:39in St Johnson
00:52:40you think maybe
00:52:41I'm just going to
00:52:42go for a draw
00:52:43I think both
00:52:44have weaknesses
00:52:45in our team
00:52:46I think they will
00:52:47share the points
00:52:48tomorrow
00:52:49yeah
00:52:50I genuinely
00:52:51genuinely hope
00:52:52that
00:52:53I'm going to
00:52:54win
