00:00:17It's Friday, what a big weekend to look forward to football and of course look back on some
00:00:22of the European results and the European draws.
00:00:26In the company of Tam McManus, Alison McConnell, I'm delighted to say former Rangers and Hearts
00:00:30winger David Templeton joins us and it just makes me really feel old because I remember
00:00:36his dad playing as well so that's bad Tam isn't it?
00:00:39It is and I didn't see his dad playing, I'm probably a wee bit younger as well but he's
00:00:43certainly a legend in the United when I was there.
00:00:45Just about to say, it's times like this you miss Ruffey, I just wish Ruffey was here so
00:00:50that he could remember your dad too.
00:00:52Anyway apart from anything else the good thing is you're still playing.
00:00:56Yeah still managing to hang on there, maybe last year, maybe try and get one more and
00:01:02I think that'll probably be me.
00:01:03Just one more year?
00:01:04Yeah just the injuries have took its toll and I'm starting to feel sore in the body
00:01:08now, recovering longer, it's taken like four days to recover now instead of two so I'm
00:01:13starting to feel it.
00:01:14We're not really asking you...
00:01:15Is it hangovers or training he's talking about?
00:01:17That's it, we're not really asking you to, we're not asking you out of concern, you're
00:01:21thinking testimonial dinner, that's a weird thing, he's going to need a tribute isn't
00:01:25he?
00:01:26Anyway listen we're delighted that you're with us, maybe not in the best of circumstances
00:01:30I have to say because we've got lots to talk about, give us your thoughts on it as well
00:01:34in our comments section below and across all our social media channels, we've put out the
00:01:40managers and the players and the reaction to not only the Champions League draw but
00:01:45the results last night for Cormannock and Hearts and then the subsequent draw which
00:01:49involves Hearts and Rangers in Europa League and Conference and then let's not forget the
00:01:54small matter of Celtic Rangers on this Sunday, it's the biggest of all the games on offer
00:02:00but we'll cover everything for you.
00:02:02So that's what's on offer, we'll get the thoughts of David and Alison and Tam as well.
00:02:08So first port of call, Hearts 0, Victoria Pilsen 1, wasn't the result that we're looking
00:02:14for and I think we feel they were there for the taking, what was your take on it?
00:02:22Yeah I think that's what's frustrating, you go away from home, you keep yourself in the
00:02:26tie and that's what you're wanting going away in those games because it can be difficult.
00:02:32To come back to Tyne Castle you're thinking only one goal down, it's a good chance to
00:02:36get yourself through and I don't think Stephen Naismith really knows his best team yet, he's
00:02:42been chopping and changing quite a lot and I think you can see that in the performances so far.
00:02:47Yeah and that is the frustration I think that's seeping through to the fans Tam because quite
00:02:54simply when you start the season I thought with some of the recruits that they were getting
00:02:58that they might be looking good but suddenly it's not looking good, they're out yet again.
00:03:04I thought they should have beaten Zurich in the qualifier the last time for the Europa
00:03:09League and yet again that big package of money slips through their fingers.
00:03:13Yeah you're talking £10 or £12 million which for Hearts is enormous money, you see some
00:03:18of the teams that are in the Europa League, it's almost like a mini Champions League so
00:03:21I agree, I didn't think they were good at all last night, I didn't think they put enough
00:03:27pressure on to Pilsen, I don't think they started the game well, usually at Tyne Castle
00:03:30David's played there, it's a wee tight pitch, the fans are right on top of you, get crosses
00:03:34into the box, get corners, put the teams under pressure, they didn't, they seemed to be content
00:03:38to just keep it at 0-0 and maybe try and nick a goal to take it to extra time, whereas
00:03:43they didn't really go and pressure them, once Pilsen scored Hearts started to have a go
00:03:47which was weird as well, and the atmosphere I don't think was great, I wasn't at the game
00:03:51but I could hear it on the TV, there was a lot of booing and a lot of mumbles for the
00:03:55support so I think Steven's under a wee bit of pressure now Peter, I know it's incredible
00:04:00to say that from last season he was excellent but they've started the season really, really
00:04:03poorly and they've got a tough game on Sunday at Dundee United as well.
00:04:07This was his take on going out to Victoria Pilsen
00:04:11We huffed and puffed without really causing them loads of problems, maybe if they'd won
00:04:16a couple of chances in the second half but it was all nearly, nearly getting the ball,
00:04:20nearly making the goal, make a save or delivery or ball in the box, the quality was lacking
00:04:28so that was it and then Pilsen, obviously it's another cheap goal from us that we lose
00:04:34which takes the tie beyond us but again I think you can see why Pilsen are consistently
00:04:40in Europe because they managed the game well, they defended their box really well and then
00:04:44they make the right passes at the right times to create their goal
00:04:48Yeah Alisson, the worrying aspect of it is the ability to actually threaten their goal
00:04:54because it didn't come until late in the second half
00:04:56Yeah I just don't think they'd done anywhere near enough, I felt it was a flat performance
00:05:01I never got the feeling that they lifted the tempo, you never get a sense of them really
00:05:07pushing and knocking at the door, I think Pilsen were there for the taking, I think
00:05:11that would be the frustrating thing for so many of their heart support that I think on
00:05:16their day you'd be expecting hearts to beat them, they had enough I think to go and at
00:05:19least if you go out, go out on having had a go, on going and really pushing it and asking
00:05:25the questions, I think there was just so little impetus in the final third
00:05:29Yeah I must admit I'm bitterly disappointed about it because I did mention right at the
00:05:34start Tam that we would be at the end of August looking at possibly just three teams in European
00:05:43competition, you've got Rangers, Europa League which we'll talk about their draw shortly,
00:05:47you've got Celtic automatically, Champions League and now you've got Hearts, dropping
00:05:52into the conference when that five or six extra million could have made such a difference
00:05:57Yeah and I think the tie was there for them Peter, you're right, last year against Zurich
00:06:00as well I thought the tie was there for them, they let that slip last night, I think they
00:06:05missed Lorne Shankland, I think they missed a focal point up front, I don't think Boyce
00:06:08has been quite at it this season, I thought they missed Shankland and it was just a really
00:06:13really poor disappointing performance and as you said if you go out, you maybe get out
00:06:172-1 or 3-2, you have a real go, but to go out 1-0 at home is just poor for the Hearts
00:06:22supporters watching it
00:06:24David I know you might be in the final year of playing football and you're epitomised
00:06:31lots of people who think play as long as you can, love the game, but you also are what
00:06:36I call that kind of a rare dying breed of players who have got that technical ability
00:06:40who automatically from any manager who's ever worked with you said take the man on and I
00:06:47just don't see that with a lot of teams now, looking for a creative player, we didn't see
00:06:52it for Scotland in the European Championships, there's a dearth of people with that ability
00:06:57to square somebody up and go I'm going to have a go
00:06:59Yeah I think a big problem now is coaching as well, they're coaching it out of you, I
00:07:04think even at young age groups it's all pass, pass, pass, you don't really get in the final
00:07:09third right go and take your man on, go and beat him, like Jim Jefferies was massive for
00:07:13me in terms of the four games he would say every time I go on in the final third to take
00:07:18them on I could lose it nine times out of ten but that one time I could create a goal
00:07:22or score a goal and it just gave you the belief to, every game I felt like I was the best
00:07:27player on the pitch just because of Jim Jefferies and I think now coaches are just constantly
00:07:32one and two a touch pass it, move, inverted wingers, inverted full backs, it's all one
00:07:38and two a touch and move the ball, there's no wingers really taking people on, it's all
00:07:44one and two a touch and move the ball inside.
00:07:48On this programme time and time again I'm almost certain, we've talked about coaches,
00:07:54we've talked about psychology of managers, if a manager is saying that to you, you must
00:07:59feel like a million dollars, I don't see managers saying that to players now.
00:08:03Yeah 100% but he's right, you've got right footed players playing the left now and left
00:08:07footed players playing the right and they cut inside, they don't go down the outside
00:08:09Peter because they want to come into their stronger foot and that's, I think it started
00:08:13with guys like Arjen Robben cutting inside but it seems to be the style now of teams
00:08:18that play with you, up front Celtic play like that as well, they play with guys coming inside
00:08:22Kuhn and people like that so there's not really a guy who wants to go down the outside and
00:08:27put a cross in now, it's very rare to see that at the top level in football.
00:08:31So there's one big problem, Kelly had a similar problem, they had to try and score goals Alisson,
00:08:37in the end, yet again okay there was an own goal in there and the disappointment of the
00:08:42previous tie with that penalty kick which some thought it was a penalty, some thought
00:08:46not but it was a tall order for them to try and take Copenhagen but I thought they might
00:08:51just have been in with a chance when they went a goal up.
00:08:53Yeah me too, when I heard that Marley Watkins had scored the early goal I thought it's game
00:08:59on and I think Copenhagen had threatened, I think they'd had a couple of chances and
00:09:03I think as the game went on you could sense that the goal was coming I think, when you
00:09:08look at Kilmarnock and when the draw was made and they were paired with Copenhagen
00:09:12and it's a very seasoned European team I think you knew it was going to be a hugely tough
00:09:17ask for them to get over them, I don't think many people have anticipated that they had
00:09:21the capability of beating Copenhagen over two legs and going through.
00:09:25I think the manner in which they went out, certainly the manner of the first leg will
00:09:29have aggrieved Derek McInnes however you'd have to say they deserve a fair bit of credit
00:09:34for how they performed and played, I don't think Copenhagen have had a good start to
00:09:39the season, well they've not had a good start to the European campaign, obviously their
00:09:43season is underway but they've been having quite a tough time in Denmark but I think
00:09:48overall they were probably the better team I think.
00:09:52But Hearts is a different situation what I think is, Hearts should have beaten Pilsen,
00:09:56I think they had enough to get past them, Kilmarnock when you weigh up resources between
00:10:01them and Copenhagen you can see why Copenhagen would prevail.
00:10:05Yeah I don't think Derek McInnes disagrees with you, this is what he had to say after the game.
00:10:09I think we've got to be honest and say the scheduling doesn't help but we've no help
00:10:13ourselves with the sending offs, it's hard enough dealing with what we're going to deal
00:10:17with playing a long kind of parts of games with ten men and that's on us so we've got
00:10:25to get better at it and I do think as I say for reasons, some tired challenges at times
00:10:30so I said I wouldn't complain about scheduling, I said I wouldn't complain about the fixture
00:10:35list and we'll just go and try and set about Hibson Sunday and try and get a positive result.
00:10:42Okay, fairly philosophical on it all, I really wanted maybe four clubs in European competition
00:10:51with a big kitty, it would have been a huge bonus to us but it wasn't to be.
00:10:56The excitement of course of European draws this week, first of all for Celtic, the Champions
00:11:02League draw, just before it was actually kicking off, I don't know if you get the chance to
00:11:06hook into it David but it was, well let me sum it up for you just in case you thought
00:11:11you missed something special, it was like the Eurovision Song Contest without the music,
00:11:17it was just a cheese fest, I mean did you see it Tavis?
00:11:20I didn't see it.
00:11:21I was actually, I was tuning into it and I could see Cristiano Ronaldo and his sole job
00:11:28was to push a button which then set off the computer and then Gigi Buffon, he had to open
00:11:34up the unopenable balls from a couple of years back so he opened it up, he then pulled out
00:11:39a name and then Cristiano pushed this automatic button, meanwhile you had the two hosts who
00:11:45could clearly present the Eurovision Song Contest because they were just a cheese fest
00:11:50asking questions that would do your box in and then eventually we get to the draw and
00:11:55I don't know about you David but I'm looking at it and I'm saying to myself, Leipzig, Club
00:12:00Brugge, Young Boys, Sloven Bratislava, that's at home for Celtic and then they're away to
00:12:06Dortmund, Atalanta, GNK Dynamo and Aston Villa.
00:12:12Yeah I think Celtic have got to fancy their chances, from what I've seen they think that
00:12:16ten points could be enough to go through and if you're Celtic you've got to be looking
00:12:20at those four home ties, I think you could take maximum points of them all, away ties
00:12:26will of course be difficult, Villa away, but if they can pick up points in those home games
00:12:32I think, yeah I don't see why they can't go through.
00:12:34Yeah I've just said Thomas Jordan who's the PR person at Aston Villa, what you talk, Thomas
00:12:41used to be on this show regularly in the first two or three years and boy do I miss him Ali
00:12:47but I just sent him a text and I just said, you must be at this moment having mates that
00:12:56you haven't heard from in ages claiming to be your pal for tickets, you'll be bombarded
00:13:02by it.
00:13:03He will be but I think Thomas was living the high life yesterday, so I'm on a private yacht
00:13:07in Monaco on his private flight over for the draw, I think he was living the life yesterday
00:13:14so I think he's probably changed his number.
00:13:15Where did it go wrong for you Ali, when you were sitting next to him what happened?
00:13:20He's the Aston Villa PR guy, I mean he's got a great draw as well but I think as David
00:13:27mentioned the other time, Dortmund away, the Vestvalen, I mean Macdonald will be there
00:13:32with his son, he'll be taking his son, he'll be over there wearing the, he'll be over there.
00:13:36Will he be there in half?
00:13:37Well, he might have a half scarf yet but he'll be over there anyway, that is one of the best
00:13:44stadiums, I'm going to get your thoughts on stadiums that you've played in David but that's
00:13:48got to be for me, Vestvalen, the Johan Cruyff Arena are two of the best stadiums I've been
00:13:55in for atmosphere.
00:13:56Yeah, I think Dortmund, I remember going there with Scotland in our 21s when the full team
00:14:00were playing Germany and we went to the game, we played the day before and went to the game
00:14:04after it in the Vestvalen and what an atmosphere it was, Germany I think won 3-1 but great
00:14:08stadium, great opposition, got to the final last season, strong opposition, Atlanta won
00:14:12the Europa League, you know Villa are away so they've got tough away games but as David
00:14:16said there, you're looking at those four home games and you're thinking you could maybe
00:14:19take nine or ten points out of that and you could put yourself right in the driving seat.
00:14:23Like Zygo be a hard game?
00:14:24Like Zygo be a tough game, I think Celtic have come up against them before and struggled
00:14:28but I think your other three games in front of a packed Celtic party, you'd fancy a Celtic
00:14:32win them.
00:14:33James who sent us a message says, that's the easiest Champions League draw ever, so there
00:14:39you are, leathered right away.
00:14:41I think it could have been harder, I think when you look at Real Madrid and Man City
00:14:45and Bayern Munich, PSG teams like that, you just know you're not getting any points but
00:14:50I think with those games, particularly the four home games and maybe Dynamo away, you're
00:14:54thinking to yourself you could be competitive in those games.
00:14:56Yeah, Hugh Scott says, Peter I thought Celtic, well they should be pretty happy with their
00:15:00Rangers on the other hand, it's the return of Ange, we're going to hear from Ange just
00:15:06shortly on that, he's been talking about it today and we're going to talk about Celtic
00:15:10against Rangers on this Sunday as well, where's the best stadium you've played in?
00:15:15For atmosphere it was probably Anfield, but the best stadium was Etihad, that was unbelievable.
00:15:22Tam usually boasts about some of the goals he's scored in half decent stadiums but you
00:15:28scored didn't you?
00:15:29I did, it was really an own goal but somehow I got it.
00:15:32Oh David, David, come on!
00:15:34He's actually had it and dropped it in.
00:15:37Did you kick it towards him?
00:15:38Yeah but I managed to get the goal.
00:15:39That was limsing, I remember watching that, the Hearts fans when the goal went in.
00:15:43That was unbelievable, I remember that.
00:15:45I mean that's good.
00:15:46People falling down, rows upon rows.
00:15:48That's the, were you jumping into the crowd at that point?
00:15:53No, so I didn't actually go in, I just ran in front, jumping up and down but then I could
00:15:57see people literally falling on top of each other celebrating, it looked incredible.
00:16:01Did you get a jersey?
00:16:02I got Carragher's, yeah.
00:16:04That's not bad.
00:16:05It's not bad is it?
00:16:06He actually gave me a half-time.
00:16:07Did he?
00:16:08Yeah.
00:16:09Well that's unusual isn't it?
00:16:10Yeah, because straight away everyone was wanting Gerrard's but Marius Zalukis, because he was
00:16:15captain straight away, no shaking hands, he managed to get his so.
00:16:18Oh brilliant.
00:16:19Carragher was a good one.
00:16:20Yeah, still got it?
00:16:21I don't know where it is to be honest, maybe in my mum's.
00:16:24You know why we're asking you that by the way, because we had Mark Reilly on the show
00:16:29and he just said, he's won the Scottish Cup, I said no, no, I gave it away, the medal and
00:16:34the shirt in a frame, gave it away to somebody and I thought, I just looked at him earlier
00:16:38and I thought, what a rocket you are Mark.
00:16:40He's mad into his memorabilia, I can see in there.
00:16:43I never really got much tops to be honest, I think I got a few and gave them away as
00:16:47well, I got Daniil Oatman's that I gave away, I'm trying to think, Kyle Walker's as well
00:16:53at topping them.
00:16:54Good one.
00:16:55Yeah, but I haven't even got any of my own tops, I think I've got one top and it's a
00:16:58Rangers anniversary top, that was it, it's the only one I've got framed.
00:17:04That's the only one?
00:17:05Yeah.
00:17:06We had a competition, I might as well tell you by the way, we had a competition today
00:17:08because one of our workers obviously, we say to people, be a fan, but as soon as you come
00:17:16and work for PLZ in a professional capacity, you've got to work, but you can still go away
00:17:20home and be a fan, so we had a competition today and I said, I bet you'll never guess
00:17:24David Templeton's middle name, and we were going through everything you could possibly
00:17:32think of, it's just the best middle name of all time.
00:17:35It's got to be my dad's favourite player.
00:17:37Yeah, so see if you can guess, what's his middle name?
00:17:39I actually know this.
00:17:40Don't.
00:17:41I do know this, I know this because I'm pretty sure you were at Rangers before.
00:17:44Ogleesh?
00:17:45No, the other side.
00:17:46The other side?
00:17:47Yes.
00:17:48Eh, Cooper?
00:17:49Yes!
00:17:51No surprise he was your dad's favourite player because, brilliant, yeah.
00:17:57So David Cooper Templeton, that's a belter isn't it?
00:17:59He's got a tattoo of him and everything.
00:18:02Is that right?
00:18:03Your dad has?
00:18:04Yeah, I love them.
00:18:05That's magnificent isn't it?
00:18:06I didn't know that, eh?
00:18:07That's brilliant.
00:18:08By the way, just out of curiosity, does your dad still play Fives?
00:18:10No.
00:18:11Nothing?
00:18:12No, I think when he stopped playing, that was him, he didn't do anything again.
00:18:15Is that right?
00:18:16Otherwise, yeah.
00:18:17Right, okay.
00:18:18It's not strictly true, I played against him in an Ayrshire testimonial and he came
00:18:23on and he was still absolutely magnificent.
00:18:25He had a walking stick at that time, I think he still ended up manning the match by the
00:18:31way.
00:18:32But yeah, David Cooper Templeton, absolutely a belter of a middle name, doesn't get any
00:18:36better than that by the way, Cooper's the middle name.
00:18:39But that Celtics draw and the Europa League draw, what did you make of it David?
00:18:47Because it's Tottenham, Man United, Lyon, Olympiacos, Union SG, Malmo, FCSB and Nice.
00:18:57Yeah, I think it's a very hard draw.
00:19:01Having seen Tottenham this season so far, they look very, very good.
00:19:04I thought even against Leicester, they won each game.
00:19:07Yeah, they battled them.
00:19:08They were 6-0 up the first half, looked excellent.
00:19:12Setting game looked the same again, brilliant.
00:19:16So I think even coming to Ibrox, that'll be a difficult game for Rangers because they
00:19:20are playing so well.
00:19:23Going to Man U, that'll be extremely difficult, even though Man U are going through a bit
00:19:28of a phase just now, I think it'll be a difficult game for them down there.
00:19:33And then even looking at Olympiacos I'm sure is a way, which looks like a horrible venue
00:19:40to go to in terms of the way the fans are.
00:19:44So I think they've got a really hard tie.
00:19:47Yeah, absolutely.
00:19:48I can remember actually, I don't know if you were there Ali, I can remember Rangers playing
00:19:52away against Fenerbahce in I think it was a Champions League group match and the press
00:20:00got pelted with stones before they came in and that was before, and God knows what the
00:20:05players got.
00:20:06I thought to myself, if we're getting pelted, what's the Rangers team bus like?
00:20:09You know they were going bananas, Olympiacos, same thing, crazy.
00:20:13Out of it all though, this is what Ange Posto-Coglou had to say about a return to play Rangers.
00:20:19No, it's exciting, good to be a part of it and yeah, some good games and yeah, I'm sure
00:20:26I'll get a warm reception at Ibrox, they'll be looking forward to seeing me.
00:20:32Yeah, absolutely.
00:20:33It's always the way though, isn't it, there's always a little twist that brings you back
00:20:37somewhere.
00:20:38Yeah, absolutely and I think he's got a good record at Ibrox, I think he lost his first
00:20:44game there, am I right, 1-0, but yeah, I think he will be assured a warm welcome but I think
00:20:50you would expect Spurs to win it, I think you would expect them to be too much for Rangers.
00:20:55I think it's a formidable group, I think it's a really tough group when you look at it on
00:21:00paper and look at the magnitude of the challenges that are coming and it's all very well looking
00:21:04at Man United just now and saying in the context of the English Premier League, the
00:21:09one they've achieved for the last few seasons and they look a bit disjointed but ultimately
00:21:14Rangers going to Old Trafford and trying to get something is a big ask.
00:21:17Yeah, we've got a Man United fan in our team as well and as ever, there seems to be always
00:21:24an air of arrogance about Man United fans, they just went 6-0.
00:21:27I don't see that in Man United, the way they're playing at the minute but yeah, I agree, it's
00:21:33a really, really tough draw for Rangers, I think the two French teams will be tough
00:21:38as well, Nice and Lyon, Malmo away and Man United-Spurs but it's a game you want to play
00:21:44as a player, you want to play, test yourself against the best and the best league in the
00:21:47world for me is English Premiership so great for players to go and play against teams from
00:21:53that league.
00:21:54Yeah, last bit on the European front, with the drop down for Hearts, it's now Copenhagen
00:21:59and also, I'm just trying to see, Circle Bruges is another of the teams, Dynamo Minsk, Petro
00:22:07Club and I think I've got Ammonia Nicosia in there as well as Heidenheim as well.
00:22:16There is quite a drop off Peter when you see the quality of teams from the Europa League
00:22:20to the Conference League and I think Hearts will be more competitive, I know financially
00:22:24they wanted the money but I think when you look at the group that Rangers have got, if
00:22:28Hearts were in that as well, I think they'd be really struggling so I think just some
00:22:32of the teams, no disrespect to the teams I've mentioned there, there's a bit of a drop off
00:22:35from the Europa League quality to the Conference, Hearts can be more competitive.
00:22:38Well they might be more competitive but it's funny actually, when you speak to various
00:22:46people who work in different levels of clubs, I mean from your own point of view, with your
00:22:51job you have to look and maybe scout players and recommend them to managers or someone
00:23:00as your line manager David, various other people who work at the clubs, always for example
00:23:07for a finance person who's in finance at Hems or Hearts or Rangers or Celtic, they look
00:23:13at the game totally differently and they'll look at that and say, it could have been another
00:23:17five million that would have made the whole wage totally different, doesn't it? It changes
00:23:22the outlook on your whole year and your season ahead.
00:23:26Yeah definitely and it's even just having those teams up at your stadium as well, in
00:23:30the Europa League the likes of Tottenham have a name there, so now the teams that they have
00:23:35in the group like Copenhagen, there is a big difference, just the whole feel about the
00:23:42place as well, if you had that sort of tie, so as Tam said it's a massive difference in
00:23:49terms of the quality of teams that they're going to be up against but it does give you
00:23:53a better chance of going far in the tournament as well.
00:23:56It's not just Scotland that has this, at times, not so much an inferiority complex but a realisation
00:24:03that there's a huge gap, there's a lot of clubs in a lot of countries in Europe look
00:24:07at English football and think, it is, it's a massive gap now financially and they're
00:24:11picking out, cherry picking the best players, what's it like when you're walking out and
00:24:16you know you're with a hard side that doesn't have the vast array of talent that maybe a
00:24:20Liverpool had, is there an inferiority complex, what goes through your mind?
00:24:26Well I think the first, I remember when we played Tottenham the first game, we were all
00:24:30buzzing, couldn't wait to play against them because they had Gareth Bale, Aaron Lennon
00:24:34at the time, Modric, he didn't play that game but he was there, but I remember after 15
00:24:40minutes we were 3-0 down, they were unbelievable and that's when we had a realisation that
00:24:46we were nowhere near the level that those teams were, whereas the next season against
00:24:51Liverpool, we drew 1-1 at Tyne Castle and even down at Anfield, even though we knew
00:24:57they had levels to go, they weren't at it and then when we scored, it was like bang,
00:25:01they just clicked in another level or two and scored straight away, so even then in
00:25:06the space of those 5 minutes you could see again, they had levels to go, we just couldn't
00:25:11get to it.
00:25:11Is it demoralising?
00:25:13I wouldn't say it's demoralising because it was still good to play against those teams
00:25:18and when you watch it back you see, especially Spurs, how good they were, van der Vaart,
00:25:24he was unbelievable, people saying to you after it, oh why did you not just go and kick
00:25:28them, it's like because you genuinely couldn't get close enough to kick them, because they
00:25:32were moving it, one and two touch, just popping it all over the place and when you watch it
00:25:37back you realise, do you know what, you're just playing against players that were at
00:25:41a different level to you and sometimes there's nothing you can do when that happens.
00:25:44Yeah and that's the great thing about having the likes of yourself in here and Tam on more
00:25:51than a few occasions has talked to us about playing against these players from that level,
00:25:56technically they're so good that they don't have to worry about the control aspect of
00:26:00it, they can automatically play a ball quicker, what other differences did you find when you're
00:26:05coming up against players like that, because you've just said to Jim Jefferson, go there's
00:26:10the man, take him on, I mean I don't know anybody in Europe who actually thinks, oh
00:26:15there's Kyle Walker, I think I might run him.
00:26:17Yeah well that's when I noticed physically, athletically how good he was, I remember there
00:26:24was one, it was actually Michael Dawson was coming out with it, Walker had went high and
00:26:29I knew I was going to try and pass to him, I managed to cut it out and then I was running
00:26:32at Dawson, I've cut inside him about to shoot and Walker's came, took it out of his, I was
00:26:38thinking how did he get back in that crack, it generally was just because he was so fast,
00:26:42so strong, yeah that was a tough night that one.
00:26:46Yeah absolutely, I'm listening to the other key to it as well, right now Ali, everybody's
00:26:51now thinking, okay they've seen the draw, those three teams have seen it, we're now
00:26:56looking and saying there's still some time left in this transfer window, it's down to
00:27:00the wire, teams are starting to make signings at the last minute that could alter things,
00:27:08Celtic, Arna Ingles, 11 million, and then Austin Trusty, 6 million, there's a real
00:27:16shout now that Luke McCown could be coming in, sorry, channeling in a Ruffey, yes absolutely,
00:27:23I know Ruffey just thought of the first name and then it sounded like it, Luke McCown,
00:27:27just over a million, and then they've shipped more than a few out, but I think, I'm not
00:27:34going to get sucked into it, but the hype around those players, especially Arna Ingles at 11
00:27:41million.
00:27:42It would be a Scottish transfer, a Celtic transfer record, yeah I think Brendan Rodgers
00:27:49was very clear going through the whole window, I think you heard him on Sunday after the
00:27:54game, making it clear that he wanted some business to be done before close of play,
00:27:59today I think he wants his squad to be stronger, coming out of this window as they were before
00:28:06going into it, I think they've offloaded maybe a dozen players, maybe 12 players off the
00:28:11wage bill, I think it was quite a bloated squad, I think the proof will be in the pudding,
00:28:19you'll be able to judge these players when they come in across the next few months, I
00:28:22think a bigger question which we have spoken about repeatedly is maybe just the structure
00:28:28of how transfers are done, the system of transfers, I think, I'm not sure you should be running
00:28:34it down until the very last minute of the window, however I think it has been a fairly
00:28:39turgid window across the board when you look, it's been slow this summer for all clubs in
00:28:44getting players in, but in terms of the business that they've done, I think people will be
00:28:48pleased that they've pushed the boat out a bit, they've brought in players that are left
00:28:52sided, centre back, which is what they've been crying out for the last few seasons and
00:28:56you'll see over the next few months what kind of impression now they're going to make.
00:29:00Yeah, listen I don't think you can criticise them Tam for splashing out the 11 million,
00:29:04I don't think too many Celtic fans were demanding 11 and 9 million, they've done it,
00:29:09they deserve credit for that, the question I would be asking if we were allowed into
00:29:14a Celtic press conference, by the way most people have a message on how long before I
00:29:20mention it, the question I would ask Brendan Rodgers is quite simple, are you happy with
00:29:27the standard of player that's been brought in, does it meet your demands?
00:29:33Well he can answer that Peter, I think that with Engles and Trusty, I think you're getting
00:29:38guys in that are going to go straight into the team, I think Trusty goes in beside Carter
00:29:42Vickers and I think that Engles, you can play anywhere across the middle of the park, you
00:29:46can play on the right hand side in terms of a winger, so I think you're getting guys in
00:29:51that are going to make an impression in the Champions League Peter, if you go and sign
00:29:54a guy for a million, million and a half squad players that Celtic have been doing, it just
00:29:59bloats your squad, I think if you go and pay 11 million for someone they earn 9 and a half,
00:30:02for Ida 6 million for a cent and a half, you're tooling up to have a go in Europe and I think
00:30:07that's what Celtic are doing, they're bringing players in to improve the team and I think
00:30:11they're, when you look at Schmeichel as well, I think that Celtic will come out of this
00:30:16window I think stronger.
00:30:17Yeah, there is a suggestion, I think Brendan Rodgers, this is what he's had to say obviously
00:30:22ahead of the game but he's talking about the players that they're hoping to bring in,
00:30:28we hope to close out the window in a really positive way, we always said we wanted to
00:30:32finish the day stronger than when we entered into it and I'm positive that we can do that,
00:30:36I never want to speak when the process is still in place but we have a number of transactions
00:30:41going on behind the scenes which would suggest David that they might even bring the odd couple
00:30:47in, Mikey Johnson is away to West Brom so they're shifting players out but looking to
00:30:53regenerate that squad.
00:30:55Yeah, well they've obviously brought in a lot of money as well which helps with O'Reilly
00:31:00going, they have to replace him because he was vital for them in the way they played
00:31:05and the goals and assists that he got so it looks like Ingles will be coming in to replace
00:31:12him plus Bernardo came in who can also play there, Mikey Johnson going for a rumoured
00:31:17two and a half million which is good business again from them so they're in a very good
00:31:21position to go out and spend money and bring players in to make the squad stronger because
00:31:27as they've looked so far they've looked very, very good and you also mentioned the
00:31:31boy McEwan, if they go for him I think he's a very good player and I think that Rodgers
00:31:36is the type of manager that would put him to another level as well so it could be good
00:31:41for them as well.
00:31:41Yeah, the interesting thing about it is even with, and this is the balancing act that we've
00:31:47all been discussing, Tram, Alison, is what you want to do domestically, what you want
00:31:52to do in Europe and you caught up with Paul Lambert earlier today just to talk about the
00:31:59difference for Celtic, the demands on not going into the European games and losing right,
00:32:06left and centre.
00:32:07In a club the size of Celtic you can't keep playing European competitions Alison and
00:32:12ending up with one and zero points.
00:32:15That doesn't add up, the club's too big for that, it does great domestically as you
00:32:19said but it needs to make a little dent in Europe and hopefully this new format does
00:32:25that because you give clubs who are not in the elite bracket, it gives them a little
00:32:31chance to maybe have a little crack at the knockout round.
00:32:37Yeah, absolutely, he knows better than most because at least at that time, Tram, they
00:32:43were getting to the latter stages of European competition.
00:32:46Yeah, I think that obviously we spoke about it the other day, Peter, the early 2000s was
00:32:50all the pinnacle in Scottish football in terms of teams doing well in Europe, the Martyn
00:32:55O'Neill team and the Dick Advocate Rangers team but both there was serious money going
00:32:59about, Hartson, Sutton, Larson, Rangers were signing Tore Andrew Floe for £12m so those
00:33:05days are gone but Paul's right, they did make an impression in Europe, they took some
00:33:11big scowls, I remember beating Juventus, I think the 4-3 at home and beating Barcelona
00:33:15over two legs so I don't think Celtic are at that level yet but the more signings they
00:33:19make of the £6m, £10m then they can start to get close to that again.
00:33:24You were strutting your stuff around about that time as well, who was the most difficult
00:33:27player that you come up against domestically?
00:33:29I was always really impressed with Steve Davis, he just always seemed to have time on the
00:33:35ball, pick a pass, control the game, he wasn't the biggest, strongest but no one would get
00:33:43near him, as I said he was always that clever that he found himself with time on the ball.
00:33:48Even the first time and the second time David?
00:33:50Yeah, I thought he was really, really good.
00:33:54Easy Geary for a spell when he was up here I thought was excellent, playing against him
00:33:57was always difficult, he was so fast, any time he got away from you, you were never
00:34:02catching him and he had good delivery into the box so I was always impressed with him
00:34:06as well and I'm sure the year, it might have been 2010 or 11 he got player of the year
00:34:12as well.
00:34:15Always interesting to get an insight into players from David's time, Tam's time to see
00:34:22exactly who was the difficult ones that they come up against.
00:34:25Nowadays we're looking at the Scottish Premiership, here's the games that we're going to be analysing
00:34:30before we go off air, this is what's on offer this weekend, Dundee against St Mirren, St
00:34:35Johnston, Motherwell, Ross County against Aberdeen, Celtic Rangers, Hearts against Dundee
00:34:41United and Kilmarnock against Hibs, three of those games on the Saturday, three on the
00:34:47Sunday.
00:34:48Just before we get to talk about them, there's just one little statement that's come out
00:34:52from Hibs, it's regarding the abuse that has been directed towards Ellie Yuan on Instagram.
00:34:59Everyone at Hibs is disgusted with the racist abuse Ellie Yuan has received on social media,
00:35:05the club has launched an investigation into the message on Instagram and will take the
00:35:10strongest possible action against the individual in question.
00:35:14I don't know what motivates someone to go on, Alison, and think it's okay to abuse someone
00:35:23for anything, I mean, I'm an ambassador for show racism, the red card, I just don't get
00:35:28it, I just think it's gross stupidity.
00:35:30It's morally repugnant, I think you have to condemn it in the loudest possible way, I
00:35:38just think we have to call it out, you have to publicise it, you have to show that it's
00:35:44there and you have to acknowledge that it's there and you have to take steps to try and
00:35:49remove it, it's vile.
00:35:51Yeah, absolutely, let's hope they get him and ban him for life, or her for life, just
00:35:56so that I can get the balance on it because I'm not sure at this moment if it's been released
00:36:01who the culprit is.
00:36:02Celtic against Rangers, it dominates everybody's thoughts on this one, of course Philippe Clement,
00:36:09the Rangers boss, has got a big pressure because he's got to try and get himself what would
00:36:15be his first win against Celtic, can they do it in Celtic's backyard?
00:36:20One thing that he has said this week is he's not going out there to park the bus.
00:36:26I hope also to get a few signings in this week, so maybe they have one training or two
00:36:32trainings or no training before that game, so maybe I can even not use them in that way.
00:36:38And I'm focused also on the rest of the season, not only this one game who comes, but we're
00:36:43going to prepare us in the ultimate best way to be competitive in that game and to go full
00:36:49for the three points, not to sit and to park the bus in front of goal and to hope that
00:36:56something falls out of the sky, no, we're going to go full our chances.
00:37:01I can't wait to see what the plan of attack, I have watched previous Rangers managers in
00:37:07the last few years, David, decide to park the bus, which I thought was a recipe for
00:37:12disaster, it'll be interesting to see what plan he adopts.
00:37:18Yeah, I think it's going to be vital that they keep Celtic out for the first 20-25 minutes,
00:37:22try and turn the crowd a little bit, quiet them down, because if you can see the early
00:37:27against Celtic at Parkhead, they're going to be in for a long day.
00:37:31I think Rangers had a good result last week, which the fans needed, especially with the
00:37:36whole Hamden situation and previously not playing well, so I thought that was a big
00:37:42boost for the fans, but Sunday's going to be very difficult and a totally different
00:37:46game from last week.
00:37:48Yeah, what do you expect them to do?
00:37:50I genuinely don't know.
00:37:53Having watched Celtic, they've been bang at it, they're looking very good, and as I say,
00:38:00I think Rangers need to, I think that sometimes you have the plan of going and attacking,
00:38:06but sometimes they can peg you back with the way they play, and I think that might happen
00:38:10at the start of the game, and as I said, you've got to stay in the game and then try and get
00:38:14yourself into the game, build a bit of momentum, and I think that's going to be a big boost
00:38:19for them, and hope that you can obviously hurt them going forward, because they do have
00:38:24a player to hurt Celtic going forward, and I think that's Celtic's defence have been,
00:38:29probably, especially the left-hand side of them, I think you can get a bit of joy, and
00:38:35I think Rangers need to try and exploit that when they can, but they've got to be solid
00:38:39defensively.
00:38:40Yeah, that's the key point that I think a lot of people, and certainly a lot of fans
00:38:47sometimes, look at the way a game unfolds and they think, well, why didn't you have
00:38:51a go at them? Sometimes it's just not possible. I wonder about it now though, because right
00:38:56up until we get to the Sunday, managers can duck and dive, we were talking about the need
00:39:02to get players out, players that maybe are not part of the manager's plans, Scott Wright
00:39:07to Birmingham has won, releases some cash, Todd Cantwell to Blackburn might release a
00:39:13fair bit of cash, so suddenly he might have the chance, he's got Narasho Kasanwiro coming
00:39:20in on loan from Feyenoord, he's a place centre-back or right-back, but that maybe gives him an
00:39:27option to solidify the defence and throw him straight into it, I'm not sure he'll do that
00:39:32or not, but it certainly might give him a bit of leeway for one end and maybe another.
00:39:37Yeah, I think that Rangers are obviously in the midst of rebuilding the squad, Peter,
00:39:41I think that they've got rid of a lot of big earners in the summer, you know, the Barisic,
00:39:46Lindstrom obviously both went to Turkey, Golsan was a big earner, Cantwell was a big earner,
00:39:51Ryan Jack, guys like that, so they're starting to clear the decks a little bit in terms of
00:39:55trying to free up money, but they need to bring quality in, there's no point in just
00:39:59getting the wage bill down and then bringing in sub-standard players, they're having to
00:40:04work in the loan market a wee bit, obviously they're hamstrung with not getting into the
00:40:07Champions League and getting that money, and I think they do need to strengthen both
00:40:11full-back areas, I think Taverney needs some pressure on his position, and right-back,
00:40:14I know Sterling can play right-back, and the left-back obviously, they got injured,
00:40:21real left-back, Turkish left-back, Yilmaz got injured, so they need covering that department
00:40:26as well, so it's easy saying you're going to go and have a go, Peter, but Steve has been there,
00:40:31I've been there, you go to Celtic and Rangers, sometimes you're thinking you've set up to go
00:40:34and have a go, and you just get pinned back, you just can't get out your half because the other
00:40:38team's too good, and Rangers, if that happens, I think it will happen, Celtic will come flying
00:40:42at the traps at Parkhead, they always do, Rangers, as David said, they need to stay in the game for
00:40:4715-20 minutes and not concede. Yeah, that's the biggest problem, I mean again, you know what it's
00:40:53like, it's one of those situations, Alisson, where the confidence, we only have to look at our feed
00:41:01here to see the confidence from Celtic fans that there is only one result that's coming out on
00:41:06Sunday. I speak to Rangers fans, friends of mine who are looking and saying, you know, slightly
00:41:14worried, looking and thinking how are they going to be able to pull this off, as David says, can you
00:41:18keep them quiet, can you take those one or two opportunities that suddenly silences the place?
00:41:24Yeah, I think what you're looking at is the evidence across the opening weeks of the season,
00:41:29and we've spoken about this often, that there's a belief that the form goes out the window before
00:41:37these games, I don't tend to agree with that, I actually think it's the form team who wins it,
00:41:41I think it's nine times out of ten it's the form team who goes and it's very predictable based on
00:41:47the evidence of what you've seen, and what you've seen across these opening weeks is a very confident
00:41:52Celtic side who have picked up the way they left the tail end of the last campaign off,
00:41:56they look aggressive, they look purposeful, but there's a cohesion about them that maybe wasn't
00:42:01always in evidence at the start of last season or at the pockets of last season.
00:42:06Rangers I think you could point to still being disjointed at points, I know last weekend they
00:42:11got the 6-0 win over Ross County, but it's been turgid at times in games, they've maybe not been
00:42:20as fluent as what you would have liked, so I think when you have this groundswell
00:42:26of people saying this should be straightforward for Celtic, or you expect Celtic to prevail and
00:42:31come out on top, it's based on what you're seeing in front of you, based on how you're assessing
00:42:36how both squads say. I think Dessers will feel confident, I think that would be the one threat
00:42:43that Rangers have got, but I think when you look at both squads, I think Celtic have just got far
00:42:47too much against Rangers, and certainly they look as though they've got a depth, they've got a
00:42:53quality that I think Rangers just don't have. Yeah I think lots of people here are offering
00:42:58their prediction on it, but John says only a fool predicts the result of a Celtic-Rangers match,
00:43:04Celtic to win he says, which kind of sums this whole madness up David, because
00:43:10quite simply, one of the things that I harp on about, and I know some people obviously like to,
00:43:16J Max says this is boring chat, it'll get even more boring because there's no fans,
00:43:21you know, no away fans, I like away fans in the ground, it just makes that whole game.
00:43:26Yeah I think they've got to bring that back, it used to always be known as the best derby because
00:43:31of the atmosphere, and now it's not really got that. I can remember at Celtic Park,
00:43:36Tavenier scoring the free kick, and he runs to celebrate, he doesn't know where to run to,
00:43:40because there's no fans to run to, and it's just, I think it's totally killed the atmosphere of the
00:43:45games, and hopefully both clubs will come to an agreement and bring it back.
00:43:49Yeah the only player I know David, who probably would have relished no fans there of their own,
00:43:57is your mate Scott, Scott Brown would have probably run up to any end of Rangers fans
00:44:02just for the noise up. Yeah he would have, but it's David's spot on, it's just, it takes away
00:44:07from the game Peter, for me the best derby now in the league's hips hearts, simply because they've
00:44:12got a full allocation, and there's a full allocation there, the atmosphere, until Celtic
00:44:16and Rangers get their head around the table and bring that back, then it's just not going to be
00:44:21the same fixture for me. Yeah, don't forget Tam's on his own Twitter, not anything to do with PLZ
00:44:26soccer, if you want to absolutely cane him right now, because as soon as you say that they all go
00:44:32tonto, but whether that's the case or not, I like to see the fans there, I think I remember Barry on
00:44:40the show saying that he scored for Rangers, and he thought about running towards the Celtic fans,
00:44:45and then he thought maybe it's not a good idea after all, then ran the other way, the other big
00:44:49problem Alison is I just do not think, I don't think the net's going to work, when they eventually
00:44:54get in as away supporters. Yeah I would tend to agree with you, however you've got to try and do
00:45:00something, I think everyone would be, well say everyone, I think fans on both sides are quite
00:45:05happy in some ways, in just protecting their allocation, but I think when you speak to any
00:45:11former players or anyone who doesn't have that emotional connection as a supporter to it,
00:45:16they all want the full allocations back, and I just think it dilutes the theatre of it, I think
00:45:21it just removes something from the atmosphere and from the fixture, I think anything that's going to
00:45:26get you towards that, that coming back is a good thing, I would tend to agree with you with the
00:45:31nets, however if that's a step that you're going to have to take to make the first step and bring
00:45:37away fans in, then I think you've got to welcome it. Yeah, you being a winger, did you ever, do you
00:45:42ever hear, are you conscious of fans or do you just, it's blocked out? Oh you hear it yeah,
00:45:48I actually used to love going to Easter Road, I used to get a lot of abuse then,
00:45:52one of the goal, the goal I scored there actually, I was getting stick off this one fan
00:45:56constantly, so when I scored I've turned and shooshed him straight away, but it's stuff like
00:46:01that, that you like as a player, I actually liked getting abuse at other stadiums, I always took it
00:46:07as a compliment, because I always felt it gave good players abuse, because I didn't like them, but
00:46:13yeah it's something that you definitely hear it, and you also hear your own fans if it's not going
00:46:18well either, so it can be difficult. I like that, I like that, that's why we invited him, one time I
00:46:23like anybody, anybody who scores and then gives the fans what they want, it's absolutely brilliant,
00:46:28if you're giving it out to the player, why can't the player give it back? I don't like these fans
00:46:31running to the stewards and all that, oh it's an outrage, or complain, he shouldn't have been
00:46:36doing that, you know if you're going to give it out you've got to take it back. Yeah absolutely,
00:46:40especially when you score a goal in a big game, it's absolutely top drawer when it happens, and
00:46:44we've had a few who've done it over the years and certainly enjoyed it. Give us your thoughts on
00:46:50some of the great goals in that game, Celtic Rangers, there's been some special moments down
00:46:55through the years, everybody's talking about it, we've got, well we've looked back through the
00:46:59archives and picked out some of our classic interviews with players, Ian Durant looking back
00:47:06on a classic game that Celtic played against Rangers at Ibrox, it was 4-4, and again I think
00:47:12McCoy scored a goal and then ran up and kissed his boot, and for what reason we know not, not even
00:47:18Durant he knew, and Paul Lambert's been reflecting on it as well, Barry Ferguson, it's a feature you
00:47:25can see on our TikTok and of course across all our social media, so predictions, Tam?
00:47:33Yeah I think if Celtic turn up and play well I think there's only one winner, if Celtic, you've
00:47:37seen in the cup final towards the end of last season, Peter Celtic were poor, Rangers lifted
00:47:42their game that day and there was no much in the game, I think Rangers will be relying on Celtic
00:47:46having an off day and then playing well to win the game, but if Celtic turn up I think there's
00:47:49only going to be one winner, I'll go for 3-1 to Celtic. Okay, David? Pains me to say it but I
00:47:55think Celtic will win as well, just on the way they look so far, I think some of the signings
00:48:01from last season have looked better this season as well, they've had time to settle in like the
00:48:06boy Coon, it's looking very good, so yeah I think they're going to win and I'll go 2-0. 2-0,
00:48:12Alison? 2-0. 2-0, can't disagree with you, it would need something really special,
00:48:20of course it might be the situation where, who knows, sometimes a manager's able to duck and
00:48:25dive and bring in a player that nobody sees out of left field, could it be somebody that could
00:48:29maybe help Decessors up front, is it somebody in the middle of the park, who knows, but these games
00:48:36are special, the atmosphere really good, I think probably on the basis of Philippe Clameau, he
00:48:42would have much preferred maybe to have it as a home game, but if it was the first one it would
00:48:46have been at Hampden, so maybe not. Anyway, that's what we've got to look forward to on the Sunday
00:48:51and right after the game we'll be here offering you our immediate reaction to that match, Celtic
00:48:58against Rangers, you can give us your point of view on our YouTube channel, we'd love to hear
00:49:04from you and thank you so much to so many of you, the thousands of people who've been supporting us
00:49:09and all our content over the course of last season and going into this season, so elsewhere
00:49:16some teams are going to have to pick themselves up and get going and get some positive results,
00:49:24of course the one other team out with Celtic and Rangers who are flying at the moment and
00:49:28everybody's positive is the Dons, they're away to Dingwall against Ross County, unbeaten and right
00:49:34now if you're an Aberdeen fan you're as high as a kite. Yeah you are, I think they've started the season
00:49:38fantastically well, they've won every game, I think all the League Cup games and other league games have won,
00:49:42I think they've been fortunate with the fixture list, I think that they've came up against two
00:49:48teams that have been in Europe during the week at home, I think Cwm Arnold and St Mirren have had to take
00:49:52that long trek up to Aberdeen, but you can't take anything away from them, they've started really
00:49:56well, they've got another very winnable game against Ross County who obviously had a really poor
00:50:01result last week, so I think Aberdeen will win this and they'll keep going, we've looked at the
00:50:06fixture list Peter, I think in October they've got Celtic, Rangers and Hearts, that's probably the time
00:50:12to judge them, but from now to then they can get themselves in that top two or three. Yeah absolutely,
00:50:17I'm going to go 2-1 Aberdeen. Yeah 2-1 Aberdeen for me as well aye, I think I've scored one there.
00:50:22David? I'm going to go 3-1 Aberdeen. 2-1 Aberdeen. Okay wow, it's changed days actually, I don't
00:50:29think we've had everybody backing Aberdeen for a long, long time because obviously the previous
00:50:35managers were your mates and it didn't go according to plan. Anyway, right, listen, a couple of things
00:50:42quickly that will get your predictions on, Dundee against St Mirren is an interesting tie because
00:50:50Dundee are playing really well, St Mirren, can they upset them at Den's Park? Our man Patrick Mullin
00:50:56was there. It's transfer deadline day in Scotland and the window closes tonight at 11pm here at St
00:51:02Mirren, Steven Robinson says he's delighted with his squad that he has for the remainder of the
00:51:07season but would love to see another face through the doors. Yeah look, in every area if there's
00:51:12something better or something that improves the squad then yeah of course we are quite light in
00:51:17numbers, we're loaning three or four of the younger boys out for the right reasons to develop them and
00:51:23bring them back next season in better shape so it leaves us light on numbers so I do believe
00:51:27it's important we try and get one in at least today and if that right person pops up then of
00:51:33course but if not I believe we've still got a very good squad when everyone's fully fit. Looking
00:51:37ahead to this weekend and St Mirren will take the trip up to Den's Park to take on an unbeaten
00:51:42Dundee side. Steven Robinson was full of praise for the recruitment of the club and is hoping
00:51:47his players will be ready for the challenge ahead. Tough challenge, I think Tony's done a great job,
00:51:51he's recruited really well and you know they've spent good money in getting players in and
00:51:57as you say they've started brightly in the cup, brightly in the league and we go expecting the
00:52:03game as it always is a tough, tough game. It's Dundee versus St Mirren live from Den's Park
00:52:07kick-off is at 3pm on Saturday afternoon. Two good managers David. Yeah, two very good managers,
00:52:15Tony Docherty's come in done extremely well. I know his assistant Stuart Taylor from Hamilton
00:52:21and he's a very good coach as well so I'm not surprised that they are doing so well. He's
00:52:25brought in some very good players and playing good football and yeah they've started the season
00:52:29excellently. Yeah, well on that point who are you going for? I'm going to go a Dundee win, 2-1.
00:52:35Yeah, Dundee for me as well, I think they've been excellent particularly at Den's Park. I think St
00:52:39Mirren just haven't quite got into their groove yet, you've not really seen the same kind of
00:52:43performances that you were seeing last term, maybe just been affected by that. The European
00:52:48game's at the start of the campaign but I can't see past Dundee. The show's doing my head in,
00:52:53we're all agreeing with each other, there's any chance we could have a fight? No, I think Dundee
00:52:56as well. I think Simon Murray was a great signing for them as well. I think with him and me boy
00:53:01Tiffany's coming into that game as well, they look sharp. I think they've got too much quality
00:53:04and I think they'll win 3-1. Okay, 2-1 for me. I like Bob who's giving me pelters, he just says
00:53:11Peter talking about Tam's mates is ironical, his raison d'etre is based on his mates as well.
00:53:19Moisey, DJ, Maloney, Lenny, mates. There was a guy giving me pelters yesterday, he actually wrote
00:53:27in and gave me absolute pelters because I said Derek Johnson was a great player. I mean for God's
00:53:33sake, he was the top goalscorer in Scotland in 1978 and still couldn't get in the Scotland side.
00:53:39DJ, any of your mates or no? One of your mates, big DJ? I spent 8 years sitting right next to him
00:53:47at Radio Clyde and I've never laughed so much in all my life. And of course the other thing,
00:53:52which obviously will irk yourself, is DJ had won an Elite Cup medal at 16. He could play centre
00:53:59half, centre midfield and centre forward. I wish your dad was here, he'd tell you how good a player
00:54:06Derek Johnson was. Bob says Derek Johnson, there you are, DJ the cheerleader. Anyway,
00:54:14thank you for that, sorry about that guys. But listen, if you're a good player, you're a good
00:54:18player. St Johnson against Motherwell, well, I think Motherwell, have they surprised us?
00:54:24I think it's been better. I think they'll win this one, I think they'll go to MacDermid Park
00:54:30and come back with all three points. St Johnson of course, Noah Dama Sidibe after his antics last
00:54:38Saturday. You can't say, for his punch in the nether regions, yeah. Coming together. Have you
00:54:43ever punched somebody or had a fight? We've had Chick Chanley was on the show and he said he was
00:54:48ogling for a move, so he thought I'll punch one of my own team mates so the manager would give him a
00:54:56move. I think I've never been in a fight in football at all. Absolutely, anybody who sits
00:55:04in that seat has never been in a fight. I don't think it's as big in football now, I think,
00:55:10years ago it was a lot more. I remember Neil McIntyre, no it was Paul Hartley actually,
00:55:15fighting Julius Michaelunas when I was a young boy, watching the indoor
00:55:23ricket and those two fighting. I've seen Lee Wallace punch Ruben Palazuelos as well.
00:55:29That's the kind of training sessions you want, no surprise there. That was because Ruben had a
00:55:35young boy Gordon Smith up training and he was pressing the ball and I think he caught Ruben
00:55:39one, not too bad, and Ruben took the huff and then the next one done young Gordon,
00:55:46so Lee Wallace punched him. As you do by the way. I like that, I'm rolling about with Austin
00:55:52McCann, who we've seen rolling about having a derby game at Easter Road, two rolling about
00:55:58punching each other and all that. Happy days, happy days. Earlier on this afternoon I think
00:56:04Alison wanted to punch me but the ref wasn't there. Heart's Dundee United, Dundee United
00:56:12certainly for all the hullabaloo beforehand. Jim Goodwin, he looks as if he's got some good
00:56:17players in there. I certainly loved watching them in the derby. He's got a couple of good
00:56:22results so far this season. Heart's obviously started really difficult, not getting results,
00:56:29so I think this game's going to be massive for Heart's and I think they will get the result
00:56:34that will cheer the fans up a little bit and try and get themselves back on the right track and
00:56:39I'm going to go with a 2-1 win for Heart's. By the way, boy do they need it. I mean, I like
00:56:47Stephen Aismith, I've got a lot of time for him, I'm a big fan. I think managers just can go through
00:56:52bad patches but boy I wouldn't like to be at Tyne Castle if they don't get a win. I think they
00:56:58desperately need it but I think, I don't know, I just quite fancy that they'll drop points. I don't
00:57:05know if the United will win it but I think they'll take something. I think there's always a dip
00:57:10coming off a European midweek performances. I don't think that's exclusive to Heart's or teams
00:57:16in Scotland. I think if you look across Europe there's always a dip in performances from those
00:57:20who are participating in midweek games and then going back to domestic fixtures at the weekend.
00:57:25I think this will be a really hard game for them. I'm going to go for a draw, I'll say two each.
00:57:30I think it might be a draw as well. Yeah, I'll go for a draw. I wasn't impressed with Heart's at all
00:57:34last night. I thought they looked poor but most sure they're good enough to go out and win the
00:57:38game. I'll go for one each. Yeah, what about your boys, Hibbs, at Rugby Park? I mean... I wasn't
00:57:45impressed with them last week, Tam, I have to be honest with you. It's the same old Hibbs, Peter.
00:57:49They look good going forward. They score goals. They've got great options in the wide areas,
00:57:54forward areas, midfield. Defensively they're still poor, Peter. The goal that Simon Murray scored
00:57:59last week was just rules. They sent a half, a couple of minutes to the end. It's just basic
00:58:03stuff. I can see Hibbs scoring down there but I just don't think they're good enough to go and win
00:58:07the game. So I'll go for it. I think they're a bad draw. I think a draw suits both. Camarnet are
00:58:10sitting bottom with no points and they're coming off a European game as well. I think a draw would
00:58:15suit both. So I'll go for one each in that game. Okay, I'm going to kill you 1-0. One each. Yeah,
00:58:20I'm going to go the draw as well. I think on the back of a tough game during the week it takes a
00:58:24lot out of the legs and I think they might be a bit tired because they've not got a massive squad
00:58:28for changing. They've kind of stayed a relatively similar team so I think it'll be a draw again.
00:58:34Right, okay. Thanks to so many of you for offering your opinion on the games and of course
00:58:42the good thing is, David, you've got off lightly. Usually in that seat, usually they give any guest
00:58:49pelters but the one thing I was going to point out to you which is just of a guest that we had
00:58:55earlier on in the week, Mark Reilly, his shirt that he gave away. So I got a message
00:59:05just basically from Tommy Adams. Another guy who says? Who is a friend of mine on Facebook. He says,
00:59:12not sure you remember, obviously I'd given them some stuff for a charity they were collecting for
00:59:18and he says, I've got his framed shirt. I now work at St Mirren and you can see there's the shirt
00:59:24with Mark Reilly's Scottish Cup winning shirt with a medal in there given away for charity. So
00:59:30well done Tommy for mentioning that. We've been talking about him in midweek. Just before we go,
00:59:37English Premier League, there's a lot of games that I think will whet the appetite. Some that
00:59:42you wouldn't actually draw the curtains to watch but I'll tell you right now, nobody will be
00:59:46speaking to me on Sunday because I'm hoping that Liverpool go to Man United and absolutely spank
00:59:51them. Yep, great game. I think Newcastle Spurs, good game as well. Couple of good games on Sunday.
00:59:57Do you fancy Liverpool? Do you like the look of them at the doors? I think he is, it's a great signing.
01:00:01Yeah, for £12 million I think that's a great signing. It's an injury problem but it's a bit of a snip
01:00:05getting him for that money. Yeah, absolutely. Do you fancy them? No, I think Manuel will beat you,
01:00:102-1. What? You think so? You happy with the way they're looking? Yeah, I think Manuel will win, 2-1.
01:00:15Okay, do you want to go away? No! Honestly, this is a guy who would bet on how many steps a fly
01:00:25would take across the table. I'm not that confident, I'm just trying to say to wind you up.
01:00:29Alright, okay, that's fine. Ali? Liverpool 3-0.
01:00:34Going for a draw? Yeah, going to draw Old Trafford. David, you're the last word on this. I think
01:00:38Liverpool will win, 3-1. I think going forward, Manuel will still look suspect at the back so
01:00:44I think Liverpool will score 3. Right, just before we finish and it would be remiss of me not to
01:00:49get you on this because obviously it's been great having you and I think we, I can't remember where
01:00:53we met and I said you've just got to come on the show. We were at a gig somewhere, weren't we?
01:00:57It was actually at the, it was a Drumchapel race night you were at with Tam Cowan and John Gagan.
01:01:06What a line-up that was. Yeah, it was hilarious. That's Champions League and there was no real
01:01:11inferior after-dinner speakers there. What a night that was, eh? Just on that, but I'm not going to
01:01:18let you leave with, toughest opponent you've ever played against? Directly against? Kyle Walker.
01:01:24Right, you can't argue with that one. So, best player you've played with?
01:01:30Played with? Lee Wallace or Rudy Scacchio. That's a good couple by the way. Rudy's finishing was
01:01:38unbelievable. Even in training on a Friday we'd do shooting and I was his shooting partner, never
01:01:44ever lost. It didn't matter if I was horrendous, he would always score. Is that right? His left foot
01:01:50was a wand. Magic. Okay, and the last point here which you can leave us with, if you had to pick
01:01:58and quite a few people... It's not a list, is it? No, it's not a list, it's an easy one. I know.
01:02:02He loves a list. I know. Give us your five-a-side team.
01:02:09That I've played with? No, just give us five you'd have that you've played with or
01:02:13you definitely have in the trenches with that you've played with.
01:02:17Five I've played against then. I'll go Peperina in goals,
01:02:21Carragher, Centre-back, then I would put in De Bruyne, Gareth Bale and Luis Suarez up top.
01:02:35Not a bad team to play against. By the way, that'd do your brains in a minute. What about that team?
01:02:41That's some team. Steven Gerrard cannae get in it. Yeah, I know. And by the way, your best five
01:02:45that you've played with because this is the key to it all. You're going to have to upset somebody.
01:02:49Who's your keeper? Marion Kello. She was very good when I played with him.
01:02:57Centre-back...
01:03:02Andy Webster. That's field two.
01:03:09It's actually harder than I thought it would be. Yeah, because you're going to have to leave some
01:03:12of your mates out. I'll put Lee McCulloch in. Big Jig, yeah. Big Jig was a striker when I played
01:03:21with him. Good point. Lewis McLeod was very good. We were talking about him today.
01:03:28He was unfortunate with injuries, but he was excellent.
01:03:33Three more. Strikers. Two more, innit? Strikers. I'll go Strikers in.
01:03:40I'll actually play Rudy off the ten. I should have put in Lee Wallace. I haven't said he was
01:03:48one of the best I've played with. Don't try and suck up to him now. You've got one guy left. Lee,
01:03:53you're out. Anybody in that Hearts side? What about that Rangers side you played in? I'm trying
01:04:03to think. Rangers. Big Boydie. Kenny Miller. Boydie probably just for goal scorers. Five
01:04:09a side. I see. You can't leave Boydie out. If it's any consolation, he's still playing Fives.
01:04:20Usually a one-hour show, but the time he took to name his Fives, that's two and a half hours now
01:04:24on the show. I hope you've enjoyed this longer version of the show. We got there in the end.
01:04:31Listen, give us your thoughts on who's going to win Celtic against Rangers. Put it in the
01:04:35comments section below. Right across social media, we've got lots of interviews, lots of classic
01:04:40players who've played in that special tie. And of course, if you are a fan of the others, I have to
01:04:46say to Kenny in LA, he's just as high as a kite being a Dandy Dons fan. Can they continue their
01:04:52unbeaten run? We'd love to hear from you. And don't forget, hit the subscribe button on our
