00:00Would there be any European hangover for Kilmarnock
00:03after their conference-league 2-0 draw with Tromso?
00:06St Johnston, the visitors at Rugby Park.
00:08Commentary comes from Stuart Mitchell.
00:12It's two teams looking for their first points of the Premiership season
00:15as Kilmarnock hosts St Johnston at Rugby Park.
00:23First there is a minute's applause for former player Jim Doherty,
00:26who pulled on the Killie colours between 1976 and 1981.
00:33A much-changed Kilmarnock side after European action,
00:36with Derek McInnes changing five starters,
00:38Deez, McKenzie, Watson, Murray and Cameron all come in.
00:41St Johnston make a single change from Monday's defeat at home to Aberdeen,
00:46former Killie defender Sanders replaces McClelland,
00:49Macpherson starts after being subject to club disciplinary action.
00:57St Johnston get us under way.
00:59Immediately Kilmarnock charging.
01:02Josh Ray has to be alert early,
01:06just watches it sail over the crossbar,
01:08and asks questions of the players in front.
01:11The player closed down.
01:15Kilmarnock looking to move quickly.
01:27Ray pauses.
01:30High into the sky.
01:33Findlay's header is awkward.
01:36Sidibe, as he's fouled, he's quickly back to his feet,
01:40turns away, he's pulled down,
01:42and St Johnston will have a dangerous free-kick,
01:45and it's an early yellow card for Joe Wright.
01:51It was great work by Sidibe, very clever.
01:57Difficult for the Kilmarnock defence to handle early.
02:03Macpherson ready with the delivery,
02:06pushed away by McCrory.
02:11Recycled by Saints.
02:13Macpherson again, loops it over.
02:16There's no-one there for the visitors.
02:19Kilmarnock survive.
02:23McCrory called into action.
02:27Wright's throw, the flick on.
02:31Sidibe gets there!
02:35Adama Sidibe strikes first for St Johnston.
02:41It's a sharp Saints start for the supporters.
02:46The flick on, look at the determination.
02:50Messel helps it, Sidibe hooks it,
02:53and Saints are one up.
02:57The striker making sure he got there first.
03:08That's a wild challenge.
03:10There's a scream, and the referee quick to the pocket,
03:14a second yellow card for Joe Wright.
03:17And Kilmarnock are reduced to ten players.
03:23It was a wild challenge.
03:27Kilmarnock already a goal down, and now a man down.
03:33Derrick McInnes forced into a decision.
03:36Rory McKenzie will come off,
03:38and Louis Mayo will take the spot of the missing defender at the back.
03:43Here's Raymond.
03:46Brilliant work, drives it over.
03:49Sidibe with the space!
03:52And Sidibe with a second!
03:58St Johnston celebrate again,
04:00and it's a goal for St Johnston.
04:03And it's a goal for St Johnston.
04:06And it's a goal for St Johnston.
04:09And it's a goal for St Johnston.
04:12And it's a goal for St Johnston.
04:16Kilmarnock just stand and watch,
04:18but look at that touch from Adama Sidibe.
04:21Brilliant work from Raymond,
04:23but that touch with the right foot opens it up,
04:25and he unleashes.
04:26And it's Kilmarnock nil, St Johnston two.
04:35It's been lively for St Johnston in this first half.
04:42Captain Cameron.
04:44Slick pass forward, Sidibe battles.
04:49Looks for Kimpioka.
04:51The lay-off for Smith!
04:54McCrory tested again.
04:57St Johnston searching for a third.
05:03Lovely link-up play, unselfish from Kimpioka to lay it off.
05:12Clipped wide, and the strike!
05:14McCrory pushes it away.
05:18St Johnston looking in fine form here,
05:21and McCrory does well to keep that inside the penalty area.
05:24Look at Wright just dangling on the edge of the area,
05:27he caught it so sweetly.
05:29McCrory saw it late.
05:33Armstrong launches the throw.
05:36Did that come off the hands?
05:38Saints think so, there's a deflection!
05:40Off the post!
05:42St Johnston were waiting for a whistle,
05:44it didn't sound.
05:48A bit of static defending there,
05:50St Johnston all claim,
05:52it comes off McPherson, Ray was stranded.
05:58Will Kilmarnock's half-time change have an impact?
06:05Huddle, ready for the corner.
06:09Swung in, Finlay's header!
06:12Just gets caught under it.
06:15He wanted to steer it on target,
06:17and try and test the St Johnston goalkeeper.
06:22He did well to wriggle away and find the space unchallenged.
06:27Will that be Kilmarnock's hope for getting a go back in this one?
06:38Craig Levine probably wants another goal just to put things away.
06:42Watson's throw.
06:43Drops.
06:45Sails over the crossbar.
06:47But the space was there.
06:51Fraser Murray catching it.
06:54Josh Rea happy to see it go over in the end.
06:58Nobody picked up the Kilmarnock man.
07:08Play continues.
07:09Kilmarnock look to build.
07:13Getting some numbers forward.
07:15In search of getting on the score sheet.
07:17Here's Lyons!
07:19It wasn't far away.
07:21Drills it wide.
07:23Again Kilmarnock starting to find that space around the penalty box.
07:32The captain picking up the position to try and get Killy back in this one.
07:38Armstrong clever with that pass.
07:43Watson.
07:51Watson.
07:54Takes that one out wide.
07:57Armstrong sets.
07:58Faces Raymond.
08:01Makes his way into the penalty area.
08:03Was he clipped?
08:04The Kilmarnock supporters scream.
08:06But the referee has given St Johnston a free kick.
08:09Marley Watkins is asking for VAR.
08:12Armstrong is furious.
08:14He can't believe it's not a penalty.
08:16He can't believe he's been booked.
08:22Official consults with the voice in the headset.
08:31Armstrong looking to get away from Raymond.
08:33Who drops and appears to clip the heels.
08:36Was it outside the box though?
08:39Still looks towards the referee.
08:44Plenty of doubt around the decision on the pitch.
08:50The free kick stands.
08:54No penalty.
08:56Brad Lyons and Derek McInnes, they want an explanation.
09:09St Johnston comfortable in possession.
09:11Looking just to see this one through.
09:15Holy strike.
09:16All the spaces there.
09:18Right.
09:19Clipped in.
09:20That's lovely play.
09:22Kempioka.
09:23Oh, it's wonderful.
09:25Kempioka continues.
09:27Fouled.
09:28St Johnston penalty.
09:31And he keeps a hold of the ball.
09:34Brilliant play.
09:36From Kempioka through the legs.
09:39One way, then another.
09:41Tricks the defender.
09:43And he has the chance from the spot.
09:48Sidibe is on a hat trick.
09:50I'm surprised he's not going after that ball.
09:53Up steps.
09:55Kempioka.
09:57Cool as you like from Kempioka.
10:00Cool as you like from Kempioka.
10:03Three goals for St Johnston,
10:05and surely their first three points of the Premiership season sealed.
10:11They didn't score three goals in a league game all last season.
10:14The last time away to Ross County in a 3-3 draw just under 15 months ago.
10:20They have three today, courtesy of Kempioka's spot kick.
10:31Up in the air.
10:33No-one claims.
10:36Will there be a late Kilmarnock chance?
10:39Ray does enough to stop.
10:43He just asks for more alertness from his defence.
10:46Marley Watkins on as a sub.
10:49We know how dangerous he can be in a wonderful season last campaign.
10:53But he can't get a consolation there for Kilmarnock.
10:56McKay-Steven with the corner.
11:00It bounces, and blocked.
11:03Might there still be a chance? Off the post!
11:07Agony for Kelly.
11:11It just doesn't feel like their afternoon today.
11:17That's twice they've hit the woodwork in this match.
11:21Deep into added on time.
11:24Mackenzie Kirk won't push forward.
11:28There is the full-time whistle!
11:30It's a superb win for Craig Levine and St Johnston.
11:33Three goals, a clean sheet, the Strikers scoring,
11:37and a first three points of the season.
11:40Did you get an explanation from the referee or anyone else
11:43about what happened with the non-award of the Premier League?
11:46There was a yellow card for diving for Danny Armstrong.
11:49Did you know what happened?
11:51I didn't get an explanation from the referee.
11:53But Brad Lyon, as captain,
11:55the explanation from the referee was different
11:57from the explanation I got for the fourth official.
11:59What were both?
12:01What was his and what did you get?
12:03It was actually clear as mud, to be honest.
12:05They thought the foul was out.
12:07First of all, Brad was told that the referee said the foul was outside the box,
12:11which then, I don't know,
12:14which then, I don't know,
12:16it's bizarre then that St Johnston get the free kick inside the box.
12:20So if it's a foul outside the box,
12:22I don't know why Danny's booked.
12:24The fourth official said he would get round to telling me
12:27exactly what was said,
12:29but we actually never got round to it, to be honest.
12:32To be honest, it doesn't really matter.
12:34I just thought the referee struggled today.
12:36We've had issues with that referee before,
12:38but my biggest issue was my defenders today, not the referee.
12:42The points, obviously, were the most important
12:44after playing reasonably well last week and not getting any.
12:47I was delighted. It's a hard place to come.
12:49I know that Komanic have had a tough game in Europe midweek
12:53and that probably took a toll, a little bit anyway.
12:57But all credit to our guys.
13:00I thought we played really well for long spells in the match.
13:03All in all, a fairly pleasing afternoon's work.
13:08I get some points on the board.
13:10You sit at the bottom without picking up three points,
13:13or even a point, it gets a little bit more worrying.
13:16At least we're off and running.
13:18Let's start with that Danny Armstrong incident,
13:21which Derek MacInnes was clearly irked by.
13:23Contact was deemed to be outside the box.
13:25The guidance, as we understand it,
13:27is that it's a quirk of the worldwide VAR protocol.
13:30Armstrong, unfortunately, can't have the yellow card wiped out.
13:33Also, Kelly cannot be awarded a free kick.
13:35Had it been inside the box,
13:37then a penalty could have been awarded
13:39and the yellow card rescinded.
13:41Michael Stewart, your take.
13:43Was it inside the box? Was it in? Was it out?
13:45The incident and the wee quirk that I still haven't had cleared up,
13:49trying to find out, is that the contact is outside the box,
13:53but Danny Armstrong's right foot and the ball are on the line,
13:59which is in the box.
14:01So does that constitute a penalty kick or not?
14:04Or is it the fact that his left foot, where the contact is,
14:07is outside makes it?
14:09I guess it must be the contact is what is deemed to fill.
14:11Well, you would think so, but I'm not 100% sure.
14:14But certainly the biggest factor today
14:18was the poor defending from Kilmarnock,
14:21and Derek MacInnes said that himself.
14:23His biggest issue was where he's defending,
14:25and that was what caused the big problem.
14:27The two strikers, Kim Bioka and Sidibe,
14:29caused the Kilmarnock problems all day long.
14:31Obviously, this was the real turning point in that,
14:34where any comeback from Kilmarnock was extinguished
14:36when they didn't get the penalty,
14:38and then right up the other end, St Johnston went and got their penalty
14:41and made it 3-0, a comfortable victory from the end.
14:43But those two guys up top,
14:45they caused Kilmarnock all sorts of problems all day.
14:48They certainly did, Peter.
14:50St Johnston, it feels like for years have struggled for goals.
14:53Wonderful day for them today.
14:55Adama Sidibe, he's got four goals now in his last three matches.
14:58Maybe those days of goal droughts for the Saints
15:02are going to be behind him this season.
15:04As you said, Derek will be disappointed with defending,
15:06even on the long throw.
15:08But as all good strikers do, they put themselves in a position,
15:10they knock the defender that's next to him,
15:13and he swings his leg, and he knows if he hits the target,
15:15he's going to get a goal from something like that.
15:17And they were a handful all day.
15:19They were putting the ball in the box, they were getting it forward,
15:21they were ruffling the defenders, making them make mistakes.
15:24If you've got strikers going to Kilmarnock,
15:26it's usually Kilmarnock that's doing that to you.
15:27And fair play to St Johnston.
15:29I thought they'd done it really well.
15:30I've been impressed with Raymond at left back.
15:32He's very positive in what he tries to do and get in the box.
15:34But he touches this really well and finishes it.
15:36You don't get much time, and he finishes it away excellently well.
15:39But as I say, Raymond the full-back, he's getting forward.
15:42I saw him mid-week as well, and I was impressed against Aberdeen.
15:44But this is a lovely touch and finish,
15:46because you don't get much time in the box,
15:48and you've got to bury them.
15:49And fair play to him, he gets his two goals today.
15:51Yeah, and you feel St Johnston, Michael,
15:53really taking advantage of this rustiness around Kilmarnock
15:56at the moment, I suppose,
15:57in terms of the way they've started this season.
15:59It's only two games in, they're bottom of the table
16:01on goal difference from Hibbs.
16:02It doesn't really matter at this stage.
16:03There's so much football to be played at that end of the table.
16:06I'm sure Kilmarnock will get going at some point.
16:08But we weren't helped, obviously,
16:10by Joe Wright getting sent off after 16 minutes.
16:14No, they weren't. They certainly weren't.
16:15I thought you covered every eventuality there, Jonathan.
16:20But you're right.
16:21This is just yet more poor defending.
16:23There's a catalogue of errors there from Joe Wright.
16:25First of all, he's out-muscled.
16:27And then he allows himself to get spun
16:30and he starts pulling him round.
16:32Here, don't over-commit.
16:34Why is he going there and opening up the inside channel?
16:36It's a booking all day long.
16:38And that was just one of many.
16:40When you look at all the goals,
16:41they were all poor from Kilmarnock's perspective.
16:45And here, lunging into a tackle like that,
16:48it's wild.
16:49There is no doubt about it.
16:51It's a second yellow card.
16:52And so early on in the game, they're 1-0 down.
16:54They're down to 10 men.
16:55They're off the back of the European exerts
16:58during the week where Derek McInnes has made five changes.
17:01He's got cup games to look forward to next week as well
17:06with the European games.
17:07It's a difficult juggling act for Derek McInnes and Kilmarnock.
17:11And they're not helped when they're shooting themselves
17:14in the foot defensively like that.
17:16It's been the same in Europe.
17:18Some poor defensive goals that they've conceded.
17:21And really, when you think about Kilmarnock last season
17:24in particular, one of the hallmarks of their success
17:27was being very difficult to break down,
17:30not giving away cheap goals.
17:32And that there so far is something that I'm sure
17:35Derek McInnes is going to want to be eradicating very quickly.
17:38Another big week of football is on the way from BBC Scotland.
17:42Tomorrow, all the highlights of the opening weekend
17:44of the SWPL season.
17:46That's at 7 o'clock on the BBC Scotland channel.
17:49And on Tuesday, we've got live coverage of Rangers'
17:52Champions League qualifier second leg
17:54against Dynamo Kyiv at half past seven
17:56on the BBC Scotland channel.
17:57It's also live on BBC Radio Scotland.
18:00And Sports Sound, the place to be on Thursday night
18:03as Kilmarnock and St Maarten continue their quest
18:06to reach the group stage of the UEFA Conference League.
18:09Those two matches, both six o'clock kick-offs.
18:12Let's talk about those European matches.
18:15Peter, Rangers obviously won all after the first leg
18:19away against Dynamo Kyiv.
18:21How confident are you that they will get the job done
18:24at Hamden on Tuesday night in front of the BBC Scotland cameras?
18:28I thought they deserved to get the draw they got over.
18:31There was a ten-minute spell in the first half.
18:33I thought they were getting a bit of a run over.
18:35Then they came into it again and had another ten minutes.
18:38But after that, I thought they grew into it.
18:39And I thought the manager made excellent substitutes.
18:41I thought they all had an impact on the game.
18:43I thought Dessars, I know he gets criticism,
18:45I thought his goal was excellent.
18:46I thought the keeper had a fantastic save from him.
18:48He keeps on going, this is the last kick of the match.
18:50Listen, his movement, there's only one guy wanting to put the ball
18:53in the back of the net, and that's Dessars.
18:54That's what all good strikers do.
18:56They keep getting in there and give him great credit for that.
18:58That's one thing he does constantly.
18:59For all the criticism he got, he got 22 goals last year.
19:02But he keeps getting in there.
19:03If he's going to miss chances, he's going to miss them in the box, obviously.
19:06But he gets the goal and it could be a really important goal for Rangers.
19:09Do you expect them to go through, Michael?
19:12Difficult to say, expect.
19:13But it's certainly going to be a tie that's there for them.
19:17They're at home, they're 1-1.
19:19Hopefully they can get themselves to navigate their way past Dynamo Kyiv.
19:22Look, if they were getting to the Champions League,
19:24it would be transformational for Rangers, it really would.
19:26I think the manager's basically said that himself as well.
19:28So, massive game on Tuesday to try to make sure they can get past Kyiv first.
19:33It's a game they're capable of winning, definitely.
19:35But it's very important they go out and execute that properly on Tuesday night.
19:40Are you hopeful for Kilmarnock and St Mirren against Norwegian opposition?
19:43Tough test.
19:44Yeah, but tough test.
19:45I think St Mirren's up against it, I must admit.
19:47Because I think they're a very good football side, Romby.
19:49And I think they've got quality players.
19:51I still think Kelly are in it.
19:52Because of the way Kelly play and the front guys that they've got.
19:55If they're fit and firing, I think they can cause anybody problems in European.
19:59So, hopefully, fingers crossed that both of the three teams
20:02obviously get good results and go through.
20:04Would you go along with that, Michael?
20:05Yeah, very much so.
20:06Away from home, it's going to be tough for the two sides,
20:09St Mirren and Kilmarnock.
20:10But I think they're capable.
20:12Michael, Peter, thank you very much indeed.
20:14There we have it.
20:15Week two of the William Hill Premiership season done and dusted.
20:18Quick break next weekend for the League Cup.
20:19But the football is coming thick and fast, just as we like it,
20:22from all of us on the Sporting team.
20:24Goodnight.
