00:00It was winter. A thick blanket of snow lay over the island of Sodor.
00:13All the engines were busy carrying passengers and goods from station to station.
00:24Sometimes they need to warn people they are coming.
00:30So steam engines blow their whistles.
00:38And diesel engines sound their electric horns.
00:46One day Percy took some trucks to the smelter's yard.
00:50He whistled hello to Harry and Bert.
00:53But Harry and Bert laughed.
00:55A quarter of a whistle, chortled Bert.
00:58Just listen to this.
01:05Diesels can do everything better than steamies, they sneered.
01:10My whistle's as good as your horn's, puffed Percy crossly.
01:14Just you wait and see.
01:21Percy practised loud whistling.
01:24He blew louder, and louder, and louder.
01:30At last he was ready to surprise Harry and Bert.
01:37Later, Percy went back to the quarry.
01:40He rolled up behind Harry and Bert, took an extra big puff, and blew as loudly as he could.
01:51Harry and Bert were surprised.
01:54I told you my whistle is as good as your silly old honky horns, laughed Percy.
02:04Now that he had a super loud whistle, Percy couldn't wait to use it again.
02:15When he saw Thomas in the sidings, he took a big puff and blew as loud as he could.
02:24Thomas was cross.
02:26That wasn't funny, he sniffed.
02:30But Percy didn't notice.
02:32He was too busy having fun.
02:39Percy saw Bertie the bus.
02:41He took another big puff and blew.
02:46Bertie skidded all over the road.
02:50Percy, he cried crossly.
02:53He had nearly caused an accident, but Percy had already chuffed away.
03:01That evening, Thomas told Percy to stop surprising his friends.
03:06You made Bertie skid across the road and my truck's got damaged, said Thomas.
03:12Percy was sorry.
03:14I won't do it again, he waved, I promise.
03:20But the next day, Percy was bringing the milk train from the dairy.
03:24I wish I could have one more loud whistle, he said to himself.
03:29He couldn't see any people.
03:32Or engines.
03:34But there was something else Percy couldn't see.
03:42Trevor the traction engine was taking food to the farm animals.
03:46With snow on the ground, they couldn't find any grass to eat.
03:50Percy took his biggest puff of all and blew.
04:00Trevor was so surprised his trailer bumped into a pile of logs.
04:06A log fell off and rolled down the hill.
04:09Snow stuck to the log.
04:11It turned into a snowball.
04:14The snowball got bigger and bigger.
04:20Percy was enjoying himself, until he saw the snowball.
04:26Oh no, cried Percy.
04:37Luckily no one was hurt, but his driver was cross.
04:42Now I will have to go for help, he said.
04:46Percy waited in the cold.
04:48His funnel was freezing and his axles were shivering.
04:52At last, Thomas arrived with the fat controller.
04:59He was very cross indeed.
05:02Whistles are for safety, he told Percy.
05:05Not for playing games.
05:08You must only use your whistle when the time is right.
05:13Yes sir, shivered Percy.
05:16And he promised to use his whistle properly from now on.
05:21The next day, Percy was a very quiet engine indeed.
05:26He didn't use his whistle once.
05:31But as Percy came out of the tunnel, he gasped.
05:34A big snowdrift had slipped onto the tracks.
05:40Percy heard Thomas.
05:42He was heading straight for the snowdrift.
05:45If he did not stop in time, he would have an accident.
05:50I must warn him, cried Percy.
05:56Percy took the biggest puff he had ever taken.
06:00And he blew the loudest whistle he had ever blown.
06:06Something must be wrong, cried Thomas.
06:10And he applied his brakes just in time.
06:19Cinders and ashes, he gasped.
06:22Thank you, Percy.
06:24That evening, the Fat Controller came to the sheds.
06:27Well done, Percy, he boomed.
06:31You blew your whistle at the right time and saved Thomas from an accident.
06:36You are a really useful engine.
06:39And a safe one.
06:41Percy was so proud, his firebox tingled.
06:49Percy uses his whistle sometimes.
06:52Percy uses his whistle safely now.
06:55And all his friends are glad to see him.
