00:00All the Fat Controller's engines like to look clean, bright and shiny.
00:07They love being washed down and having their brass polished until it gleams.
00:13James was in the workshop being repainted.
00:16He was beside himself with joy.
00:20James thought being repainted meant he was special.
00:24The workmen painted and polished for hour upon hour.
00:29Then with new paint shining, brass twinkling and blacking black, James returned to Tidmouth Sheds.
00:41Aren't I a beautiful red? he asked the others.
00:45No wonder the Fat Controller thinks I'm special.
00:49But Percy was worried. He wasn't being repainted and he wasn't red.
00:56Does this mean the Fat Controller doesn't think I'm special? he asked.
01:01Looking splendid is not the same as being really useful, said Thomas firmly.
01:07But best of all is being really useful and looking splendid like me, said James cheerfully.
01:15Before Thomas could say anything else, James closed his eyes and fell happily asleep.
01:26The next morning all the engines were very busy.
01:31Percy was working at the coal plant.
01:37Thomas and Emily were taking passengers up and down the branch lines.
01:45Gordon was pulling the express.
01:53The Fat Controller came to see James.
01:57He told him to join Percy at the coal plant at once.
02:01The coal trucks must reach Brendam Docks before the boat sails, so no dilly-dallying, he said.
02:09Yes sir, said James and he set off at once.
02:18But James didn't go straight to the coal plant.
02:22He decided to go by the canal instead.
02:25Then he could see himself in the water for yard after yard after yard.
02:32Magnificent, he puffed.
02:35James had forgotten what the Fat Controller had said.
02:41At the coal yard, Percy was working as hard as he could, but he was falling behind.
02:48The line of trucks was getting longer and longer.
02:52And the yard manager was getting crosser and crosser.
02:57Where could James be?
03:01James was still enjoying himself.
03:04But there was no one around to share his fun, so he headed for Wellsworth Station.
03:11But as James pulled into Wellsworth Station, Gordon and the express were pulling out.
03:17The passengers had gone.
03:20Father, said James.
03:23He was disappointed and he left the station.
03:26James headed straight for the branch lines.
03:30James saw Thomas.
03:32Look at me, he puffed. Don't I look fine?
03:36You should be at work, called Thomas.
03:39But James didn't listen to Thomas.
03:43James was enjoying being James.
03:49Percy wasn't enjoying being Percy.
03:53He was trying his hardest, but the trucks were being very naughty.
04:01Poor Percy was almost worn out.
04:06What will happen to the order now, cried the yard manager.
04:12When James rolled into the coal mines, it was late in the afternoon.
04:18Percy was cross.
04:20So was the yard manager.
04:22To make up for lost time, he said, you must take an extra long line of trucks to the docks.
04:29James was delighted.
04:31The docks were always bustling with engines and people.
04:35It's the place to be seen, he said.
04:39The trucks are being very naughty, warned Percy.
04:43But James wasn't listening.
04:51James puffed along, looking forward to being seen.
04:55But the trucks were naughtier than ever.
04:58They rocked and rolled and crashed and bashed.
05:02James' face was soon covered in soot.
05:08Going downhill, the trucks wiggled and giggled.
05:14James had to put his brakes on with a jolt.
05:18Coal tumbled out of the trucks, landing on James.
05:22James was cross and biffed the trucks as hard as he could.
05:28More coal flew out.
05:30Now James didn't want to be seen.
05:33He was as dirty as he had ever been.
05:37But on his way to the docks, he kept passing his friends.
05:42He passed Emily.
05:48And Edward.
05:50And Thomas.
05:52Thomas thought the only red thing left on James was his face.
05:58James trundled into Brandon Docks.
06:02He hoped no one would see him.
06:05But Gordon was at the docks with the express.
06:08He could not believe his eyes.
06:12He thought James was the grubbiest, griniest, dustiest, dirtiest engine he had ever seen.
06:21Percy arrived safely with the last of the trucks.
06:27I like your new coat of paint, he puffed cheekily.
06:31You do look splendid.
06:34James knew he should have listened.
06:36He didn't feel splendid anymore.
06:39But for the first time all day, James could hear clearly.
06:43He could hear the sound of the trucks giggling.
06:47He could hear the sound of the trucks giggling at him.
06:51And despite feeling foolish, even James had to smile.
