00:00James is a mixed traffic engine. He can pull both trucks and coaches.
00:08He is proud of his smart red paint and so is his driver.
00:13Everyone says you brighten up their day, James.
00:17One morning, James whistled loudly at the other engines.
00:21Look at me! I'm the smartest, most useful engine on the line.
00:25Rubbish, replied Thomas. We're all useful.
00:27The Fat Controller says so and he's Sir Topham Hatt, head of the whole railway.
00:33You know what, James, added Percy.
00:36What, replied James. You're getting all puffed up.
00:40James huffed away.
00:46Later, he was still boasting, I'm the pride of the line.
00:50I saw you pulling trucks today, snorted Gordon. You're only a goods engine.
00:55I pull coaches too, replied James.
00:59Not as much as I do, said Gordon.
01:02But the Fat Controller has plans for me.
01:05James was only making this up, but Gordon believed him.
01:09What plans, asked Gordon.
01:11Er, wait and see.
01:14Oh dear, he thought. Now what'll I do?
01:21Thomas was shunting shining new coaches.
01:24Good morning, James. Are those coaches for me, asked James hopefully.
01:29No, these are for Gordon's Express. I'll fetch your trucks next.
01:34But James was going to play a trick on the other engines.
01:39Actually, Thomas, I'm taking the coaches the Fat Controller asked me to tell you.
01:44What about the trucks?
01:46Er, give them to Gordon.
01:49Come on, Thomas, said his driver. Orders are orders.
01:53So when James's driver returned, James was coupled to the coaches and he puffed away.
02:08Thomas returned with the trucks.
02:11A few minutes later, Gordon arrived.
02:14Where's the Express?
02:16Thomas told him about James.
02:18And so here are your trucks.
02:20Gordon was very cross and so was his driver. Wait till the Fat Controller hears about this.
02:26Meanwhile, James was enjoying himself enormously.
02:31What a clever plan, what a clever plan, he chuffed.
02:35Then he saw the Fat Controller.
02:38Some jokes are funny, but not this one, James.
02:41You have caused confusion.
02:44Yes, sir, said James.
02:46You will stay in your shed until you are wanted.
02:52The other engines teased James.
02:55I wonder who'll be pulling the Express today, said Gordon.
02:58I expect it'll be you, replied Henry.
03:01James is stuck in the shed for being silly.
03:03James felt sad.
03:07Next morning, he went back to work.
03:09Hello, whistled Thomas. Good to see you out and about again.
03:14I'm sorry I tricked you, said James.
03:16Are these my trucks?
03:18Yes, replied Thomas kindly.
03:20They are pleased to have you back.
03:23James set off to the harbour with his good train of trucks.
03:28He bustled about all day, pushing and pulling them into place.
03:38Time to go home now, James, said his driver at last.
03:41No trucks or passengers, just we two.
03:44But his driver was wrong.
03:46Excuse me, called the man.
03:48I have a meeting with Sir Topham Hatt, and I mustn't be late.
03:51May I ride back with you?
03:53Of course, replied James's driver.
03:55Then he whispered to James.
03:57This gentleman is a railway inspector.
04:00James was most impressed.
04:05He steamed along the line as smoothly and quickly as he could.
04:12The Fat Controller was waiting on the platform,
04:15and the railway inspector greeted him warmly.
04:18This clever engine gave me a splendid ride.
04:21You must be proud of him.
04:23Yes, indeed.
04:25The Fat Controller turned to James.
04:27Once again, you are a really useful engine.
